The ‘hit man’ … Chip Taylor in 2013.

‘Wild Thing still gives me the chills!’ Songwriting legend Chip Taylor on 60 years of classics

Aretha Franklin, Frank Sinatra, Janis Joplin and dozens more sang his songs, which spanned country, rock, R&B and beyond. Now 83 and having treatment for cancer, Taylor explains why he’s still reaching for his guitar

C hip Taylor is best known for a song of restless raunchiness – the three-chord groin-thrust of the Troggs’ Wild Thing – and one of history’s most epic power ballads in Angel of the Morning, but his songs, he says, come from a much quieter, cooler place. “It comes sort of stream-of-consciousness,” he says, adding that he hears each song in his head “as a listener”. “These words are just coming and I’m having that ‘chill’. There’s a certain stillness that I get through my body. It doesn’t mean it’s going to be successful – but it means if I can get enough of that spirit going, I know that it’s gonna be worthwhile for me. That’s a wonderful blessing.”

We’re talking on a video call and Taylor, speaking from his Manhattan apartment, apologises for having a hoarse voice from the chemotherapy and radiotherapy for a recently diagnosed throat cancer. His soft-spoken ease and approachability belie his six-decade career as a Hit Man – to poach a title from his mid-90s comeback album. He began as the frontman of a rock’n’roll band, then turned to writing for others during the Brill Building era of early pop, soon encompassing rock, R&B and both classic country and outlaw country: icons as varied as Aretha Franklin, Frank Sinatra, Janis Joplin, Willie Nelson and Nina Simone recorded his songs. He has also enjoyed a solo country career with major labels, indies and his own Train Wreck Records, and at 83 is as prolific as ever, with 27 new songs on his latest album, The Cradle of All Living Things.

Born James Wesley Voight in Yonkers, Westchester County, New York, the son of a professional golfer, achievement was a family trait. His brother Jon Voight became a successful actor, as did his niece Angelina Jolie, and his other brother, Barry, became a top volcanologist. Taylor wrote his first song at 12, and by sixteen he was fronting Wes Voight & the Town Three. After two regional hits, a tour with Neil Sedaka and the name change to Chip Taylor, he ended up as a solo artist at Warner Brothers in 1962, while at the same time knocking on music publishers’ doors and selling the occasional song.

Music publisher Jerry Tyfer sent Taylor’s Springtime to Chet Atkins, the producer behind country’s sophisticated “Nashville Sound”, who sent Tyfer back a note. Taylor recalls it: “I have no idea who Chip Taylor is. It’s very hard for me to believe he’s from New York, but wherever he’s from, I want to hear every song he writes.” It led to Atkins recording half a dozen Chip Taylor songs, and Taylor’s new position as staff writer at April Blackwood Music, CBS’s publishing arm. “That’s where I started writing some rock’n’roll things,” says Taylor. “Any Way That You Want Me and some other things. And then Wild Thing and Angel of the Morning.”

At 1650 Broadway, a short walk from the Brill Building, there was a hive of activity: Neil Sedaka, Gerry Goffin and Carole King , Bert “Twist and Shout” Berns, Howie “Is This the Way to Amarillo” Greenfield, and Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil were just a few of the writers alongside Taylor. “Every office in the publishing company had a desk, a phone, a piano and a sofa, so you could have little meetings there and write your songs,” says Taylor, whose boyhood late-night longwave radio diet of doo-wop, blues and country music allowed him to bridge the chasm between New York and Nashville.

When asked why his songs have been covered in so many different genres, Taylor says his music “doesn’t have to fit a certain kind of thing. It’s soulful. Any Way That You Want Me was recorded by Spiritualized and a bunch of different rock bands, yet it was a big rhythm and blues hit by Walter Jackson and Evie Sands. Almost every time that was recorded, it went on the charts … it defied categorisation.”

A younger Chip Taylor in an undated photograph.

Taylor’s chill-driven songwriting flow was countered by the logic and mathematics of horse racing, and he pored over forms well into the night to figure out who had the better odds. “When I went into the city to my staff writing job, I would work the night before on the racing forms, and would spend an enormous lot of time on that stuff so I could make my one or two bets in the morning,” he explains. At one time, the infamous mobster Meyer Lansky’s organisation acted as the bookie for Taylor’s bets. “Lansky’s guy’s name was George and he used to come every Monday to collect the pay,” remembers Taylor. “After a certain period of time, he bought me beautiful bottles of whiskey for Christmas and my birthday. I said to George: ‘What’s going on here? I beat you 53 out of 56 weeks.’ ‘Chip,’ he said, ‘ever since you won the first couple of bets, our boss told us to take whatever you bet, multiply it by 10, and lay it off with the other bookies. You’re one of our best customers!’”

In 1965, a year into his staff writing job, Taylor got a call that turbo-charged his career trajectory: A&R man Gerry Granahan needed a rock’n’roll song for New York band the Wild Ones. “Most of my success was country,” Taylor remembers. “I hadn’t really had any rock hits at the time.” In the excitement, and with a country demo session booked for that afternoon, “I got off the phone, picked up the guitar and started singing. I was kind of buzzing he had called me.” And so, almost in real time, Wild Thing was born.

“I just wrote a verse and a chorus and I couldn’t come up with anything else,” remembers Taylor. “Finally, I realised I didn’t need anything else. I could just say the same thing, and change three words from ‘Well, I think I love you’ to ‘Well, I think you move me’. What more do you need?” With the 5pm demo session approaching, he went into the studio, dimmed the lights and winged it; engineer Ron Johnson made owl sounds by blowing into his cupped hands, which became an ocarina solo on the eventual Troggs record.

The Wild Ones’ harmonica-driven single went nowhere but Taylor’s demo reached Larry Page, manager of the Troggs. “They covered it just the way my demo was,” says Taylor. He thinks the looming recording session and writer’s block might have made the song. “A lot of people don’t realise what a beautiful thing space is in a song. Wild Thing still gives me the chills; when I strike the chords and you know the spirit of it. It’s a nice feeling.”

‘I’m going through a beautiful period of time’ … Taylor in 2022.

The song endures today, powered in part by the band’s fanbase whom Taylor says “represent the true spirit of rock’n’roll”. At Troggs singer Reg Presley’s funeral in 2013, there was “a Troggs hit every 15 minutes during the service. When Wild Thing played just before Reg was cremated, they all stood up, pumping their fists in the air and singing. It was so beautiful and the tears were flowing.”

Wild Thing was a No 1 in the US and No 2 in the UK in 1966, and was soon given an unforgettable live rendition by Jimi Hendrix. Taylor’s “hit man” reputation was minted, and his songs began charting multiple times with different artists. Another 1966 song, I Can’t Let Go, was a UK No 2 for the Hollies that year and then a US hit for Linda Ronstadt in 1980; Shaggy’s version of Angel of the Morning topped the US and UK charts over three decades after it was written in 1967, having already been successfully covered by Juice Newton, the Pretenders, PP Arnold, Merrilee Rush and more over the years.

“Angel of the Morning is just such a spirited song and wrote itself very quickly,” Taylor says. “Just like [Troggs hit] Any Way That You Want Me, I got into the spirit of a woman and let the words flow out. I think it was inspired by a war movie that I’d seen on television the night before, where two lovers on different sides of the war were spending any time they could together. People thought it was just a roll in the hay but I didn’t mean it like that at all. This was the most powerful love of two people who may never see each other again – they would love each other forever and beyond time. It was a very serious song.”

In 1980 Taylor grew frustrated with Capitol Records’ lack of backing for his latest solo release, and over the next 14 years his part-time gambling became full-time. With the exception of Papa Come Quick for Bonnie Raitt’s Luck of the Draw, co-written with Billy Vera in 1991, there was nothing. “I just didn’t have the headspace,” he explains. But when his mother was ill, he played to her by her bedside – “It was just nice to be with her and communicate with her” – and suddenly the spirit and chills started to creep back in. “I totally made an about-face and called my [gambling] partner”, Taylor recalls. “I said: you’re not going to believe this Ernie, I’m gonna give up gambling totally. I’m going to just go play music for whoever wants to hear me play.” His 1996 comeback album, Hitman, was followed by an album almost every year since.

The epic title of his latest batch of songs, Cradle of All Living Things, gives way to mostly intimate, delicate songs with a lean-in quality – the type of songs a grandfather might want to leave his grandkids. It might even lead one to think it’s a final farewell. “I’ve been going through this chemotherapy and the radiation,” Taylor says. “I don’t want to get away from the fact that a lot of this has to do with living and dying. My wife and I are getting older, she has had several strokes, and I’m going through this beautiful period of time with her and trying to come out the other end so we have some more time to spend together. But I don’t let that get in the way of my guitar and my songs: a lot of my efforts are around my love for her and my love for my family.” The suggestion that his writing is a form of catharsis hits the spot. “It’s always been that way,” he says. “Even if I was hoping something would be a hit back in the 60s, if you got that little chill from writing a song, what better can you do for yourself?”

I ask him for the most recent song that gave him those chills. “I wrote one coming out of church the other day,” he replies. “I have a lot of questions, but I like going to church with my wife, particularly during these hard times. If Jesus was a carpenter then he wasn’t a songwriter, and might appreciate a good song.” Taylor chuckles and then shuffles through some papers on the desk looking for the title. “Here it is – it’s called The Blessing”. So after all these decades writing songs, is the attraction the same? “Yeah – I’m still chasing the chill.”

u.s. american stadium tour 2023

Taylor Swift announced Tuesday morning her long-rumored return to the road, with an outing dubbed the “ Eras Tour ” scheduled to hit U.S. stadiums beginning in March 2023 and running into August, with international dates set to be revealed later.

The support acts are very much all about the sisterhood, with a host of acts Swift has championed in the past. Opening acts for the U.S. leg of the tour are Paramore , Haim , Phoebe Bridgers , Beabadoobee, Girl in Red, Muna, Gayle, Gracie Abrams and Owenn.

The tour starts March 18, 2023 in what is apparently a sweet spot for Swift, Glendale, Ariz., the same place her last outing, the pre-pandemic “Reputation” tour, began in 2018.

Popular on Variety

As for which album we can consider the tour to be supporting, since she has released four original studios albums since her last tour? All of them. Swift described the tour as “a journey through the musical eras of my career (past and present!),” with a graphic showing her look from different phases of her career.

See the full itinerary, with color-coded graphics indicating which of the nine opening acts got the gigs in which cities:

The public on-sale happens at 10 a.m. local time on Nov. 18. As with all major tours nowadays, there will be an earlier rollout of tickets for credit card members, in this case holders of Capital One cards, beginning Nov. 15 at 2 p.m. through Nov. 17 at 10 p.m. local times.

As with her previous tour, there will be a Ticketmaster Verified Fan program “to ensure tickets get into the hands of fans.” Aspiring ticket buyers can register for the setup now through Nov. 9 here .

Unusually in the modern era of variably priced “platinum tickets” where fans get little information about set ticket prices, Swift has announced the cost of her tickets in advance. They run from $49 up to $449, with VIP packages that start at $199 and go up to $899.

Swift’s announcement promised that international dates are to follow.

There was an attention to detail in the tour announcement even in the graphics signifying the opening acts at different spots in the tour routing, with Bridgers, for instance, being represented by a tiny ghost, in honor of the skeleton costume she’s used on her own headlining tours.

Not accidental, probably, is how that same graphic breaks the tour itinerary down into two columns of 13 dates each. There will be 27 shows in 20 cities. The venues getting a two-night stand are in Los Angeles, Atlanta, Philadelphia and Chicago, as well as Arlington, Texas; Foxborough, Mass.; and East Rutherford, N.J.

The reception for “Midnights” upon its October release left no doubt just how strong the appetite for Swift tickets will be. It had the biggest week since Adele’s “25” album, per Luminate this week, with 1,578,000 album-equivalent units. Additionally, it was announced Monday that for the first time in history, all 10 top slots of the Billboard Hot 100 were filled by a single artist’s songs, with “Anti-Hero” leading the way at No. 1. Fans very much wanted the full album, anyway — of the nearly 1.6 million album units registered for “Midnights,” 1,140,000 were copies purchased in the form of the full album. It became Swift’s fifth album, out of her 10 original studio releases overall, to sell a million-plus copies in the first week out. The figure also represented the best first-week sales for an album by any performer since “Reputation” came out of the gate with 1,216,000.

The “Eras Tour” is being produced in-house by Taylor Swift Touring and promoted by the Messina Touring Group.

The tour’s opening acts expressed their enthusiasm in their own ways, such as the tweet from Muna that declared the group “gay for Tay” and pictured the trio in miniature, resting atop Swift’s lighter on the “Midnights” album cover.

Pirates unveil "Yinzerpalooza" mystery bobblehead for July 20 game against Phillies

By Patrick Damp

Updated on: April 24, 2024 / 12:27 PM EDT / CBS Pittsburgh

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) - You know what it is.

The Pirates unveiled the mystery bobblehead that will be given away on July 20 when the Philadelphia Phillies come to PNC Park for the Yinzerpalooza weekend.

On that day, the first 20,000 fans in attendance will get a special bobblehead of Pittsburgh superstar Wiz Khalifa.

The Pirates, Wiz Khalifa, and Taylor Gang worked closely to design the bobblehead and bring it to life. It includes Wiz's tattoos, jewelry, and attire.

It also includes a sound chip that plays a clip of Wiz's smash single "Black and Yellow."

This is just another collaboration between the iconic Pittsburgh rapper and the Pirates after he has thrown out the first pitch, frequently wears Pirates gear while on tour, and helped release the team's 2023 City Connect jerseys.

He will also make an appearance during Yinzerpalooza weekend.

The Pirates will play the Phillies on July 20 with the first pitch set for 6:20 p.m.

Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour took over Houston in 2023. Can The Rolling Stones top it?

T he Rolling Stones tour is set to make a stop at NRG Stadium Sunday for the band’s first Houston concert since 2019. The performance comes on the heels of an album release by another music legend — Taylor Swift — whose three-day stop in Houston one year ago received shows of appreciation from fans and elected officials alike.

With the Stones' Hackney Diamonds Tour underway and Swift's 11th studio album , "The Tortured Poets Department,” that dropped last week, both music industry icons maintain dedicated fanbases worldwide.

The 1960s rock n' roll band has been performing for decades. The Stones hold a record for drawing one of the largest crowds in rock n’ roll history during a show in Rio de Janeiro , with 1.5 million people, PBS reported. Swift is no stranger to large crowds either, with one of her shows in Melbourne seeing more than 96,000 people, according to Deadline.

However, both music artists made their mark in Houston during their most recent concerts: the Stones' No Filter Tour in 2019 and Swift's Eras Tour in 2023. The success of their concerts highlighted their strong fanbases in the Bayou City.

TAYLOR SWIFT : Here's a look at Texas ties to the latest release 'The Tortured Poets Department'

How did the city react to The Rolling Stones' 2019 concert?

Excited fans first caught on to the Rolling Stones’ planned 2019 Houston concert when NRG Park teased the tour stop in an email. Park officials sent an email to subscribers with the band's logo at the end of the email and no further explanation.

The 2019 show would be the Stones’ first Houston appearance in more than 10 years. The group even teamed up with the NFL for a Houston Texans—Rolling Stones jersey.

NRG Stadium officials said the venue is happy to have the band back any time.

"We're thrilled to host the legendary Rolling Stones at NRG Stadium as the first stop on their Hackney Diamonds Tour. As Mick Jagger might say, 'Start me up' – and what better place to kick off this iconic tour than right here in Houston? We look forward to welcoming fans from near and far to enjoy a night of timeless rock 'n' roll classics. Get ready to rock the night away at NRG Stadium!" stadium officials said in a statement.

How did the city react to Taylor Swift's 2023 concert?

Houston was the second city on Swift's Eras Tour .

A marketing campaign was launched to temporarily rename NRG Stadium to "NRG Stadium - Taylor's Version," initiated by NRG Park and Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo's office. Banners were placed with the temporary name on the stadium's north and south entrances.

The City Hall also honored Swift and her mother, a University of Houston alum, by lighting the building in a “lavender haze.”

How many tickets were sold at The Rolling Stones' 2019 concert?

The Rolling Stones had to postpone their 2019 No Filter Tour dates in North America because of Mick Jagger’s heart surgery. But the rescheduled concert still brought in more than 40,000 fans for its one-night stop in Houston.

How many tickets were sold at Taylor Swift's 2023 concert?

During Taylor Swift's three sold-out performances at NRG Stadium, more than 180,000 tickets were distributed, which averaged about 60,000 a day.

The impact of Taylor Swift's 2023 concert in Houston

The impact of Taylor Swift's three-day tour in Houston wasn't only shown through the name change at NRG Stadium, but also in the economic impact.

Her tour happened the same weekend as a large convention downtown which likely contributed to the boost in Houston’s market, according to Houston First. Still, the organization found that the hotel market revenue was a whopping $34 million between April 21-23, 2023, which was a 30% increase from the same three days in 2022. The occupancy was about 78%.

Snoop Dogg

When Snoop Dogg was announced as part of the NBC broadcast team covering this summer’s Olympic games in Paris you might be forgiven for saying “tu quoi?” But in proof that you can teach an old Dogg new tricks, the Doggfather posted an adorable video on Monday in which his granddaughter Cordoba — daughter of Snoop’s son, Cordell — helped him brush up on his French in a promo video that is cuter than all those kids dropping endless f-bombs in The Underdoggs .

Hardy Serves Up A Cover of Snoop Dogg & Dr. Dre’s ‘Gin and Juice’: Stream…

Trending on billboard.

As the camera pans out to reveal the all-pink room and a colorful tea party set-up on the table in front of him we get our first glimpse of his adorable tutor, rocking a matching pink jacket and the biggest smile you can imagine. As a fancy baroque piano soundtrack bubbles up, Snoop straps in for his lesson, which begins with Cordoba shuffling through her flash cards and pouring some imaginary tea.

“The word is ‘ice cream,'” Snoop says in teeing up the obviously most important phrase he’s going to need to know for his steamy sojourn in the French capital this summer. “I think how you say it is ‘cream le ice?’,” the Long Beach native suggests. Wrong. “‘Glace,'” Cordoba corrects him.

“How do I say ‘Eiffel Tower?'” wonders Snoop, who previously reported for NBC during the Tokyo Olympics four years ago. Cordoba shoots a perfectly quizzical look at the camera and flashes the correct card, which Snoop reads back as “Tour Eiffel.” Growing weary pretty quickly — or maybe just suffering from the munchies — Snoop gripes, “I thought we was gonna be eating ice cream and cake and stuff,” as he cues up the correct way to say “goodbye.”

Snoop will be part of NBCUniversal’s coverage of the Summer Olympics in Paris this summer during the Olympic primetime show beginning July 26 on NBC and Peacock; the games will last through August 11. In addition to offering his unique takes alongside veteran NBC Olympics host Mike Tirico, Snoop will also explore the City of Light’s most iconic landmarks, attend some events and visit with athletes, according to NBC.

Fun facts from our Moscow Metro Tours:

From the very first days of its existence, the Moscow Metro was the object of civil defense, used as a bomb shelter, and designed as a defense for a possible attack on the Soviet Union.

At a depth of 50 to 120 meters lies the second, the coded system of Metro-2 of Moscow subway, which is equipped with everything you need, from food storage to the nuclear button.

According to some sources, the total length of Metro-2 reaches over 150 kilometers.

The Museum was opened on Sportivnaya metro station on November 6, 1967. It features the most interesting models of trains and stations.

Coffee Ring

The first scheme of Moscow Metro looked like a bunch of separate lines. Listen to a myth about Joseph Stalin and the main brown line of Moscow Metro.

Zodiac Metro

According to some astrologers, each of the 12 stops of the Moscow Ring Line corresponds to a particular sign of the zodiac and divides the city into astrological sector.

Astrologers believe that being in a particular zadiac sector of Moscow for a long time, you attract certain energy and events into your life.

Paleontological finds

Red marble walls of some of the Metro stations hide in themselves petrified inhabitants of ancient seas. Try and find some!

  • Every day each car in  Moscow metro passes  more than 600 km, which is the distance from Moscow to St. Petersburg.
  • Moscow subway system is the  5th in the intensity  of use (after the subways of Beijing, Tokyo, Seoul and Shanghai).
  • The interval in the movement of trains in rush hour is  90 seconds .
