The 13 best places to visit in Greece

From sprawling cosmopolitan cities to breathtaking beaches, here's where to add to your Greece bucket list

Demetrios Ioannou

There are many beautiful countries in Europe, but there is nowhere like Greece . The white and blue houses. The mountain views. The glistening blue waters and the secret hidden coves. It’s sometimes barely believable that Greece exists, but it does! And the best part? It’s absolutely massive, and there’s so much to explore.

Different Greek islands do different things, so if you’re making the trip, you should first figure out what kind of holiday you’re after. Are you looking for something beachy, nature-y or a bit more cosmopolitan? Lemon trees, sunset cocktails or pure, unadulterated clubbing? Whatever you're looking for, our local writer has picked the best islands, cities and towns to visit.

Where to visit in Greece

Athens

1.  Athens

Obviously, if you’ve heard anything about Greece, you know about its beautiful capital Athens. Athens is that perfect mix of traditional but trendy, ancient but modern, full of nature but cosmopolitan at the very same time. Here you’ll find huge, open roads covered in restaurants and bars, but coming off them are tiny little cobbled side streets to explore. Old buildings give way to fascinating galleries. You can grab an ouzo and pitch up at a beautiful outdoor cinema, looking up at the stars. Plus you’ve simply got to see the Parthenon at least once in your life. Athens is a sprawling, incomparable beauty that is like no other. Add it to your bucket list.

Why go?  Europe’s oldest capital and the birthplace of democracy, Athens is crammed with several thousands of years of history and is as unmissable as any great Euro city.

Aegina

2.  Aegina

A little over an hour away from the port of Piraeus, the island of Aegina is the closest to the Greek capital and a popular destination for tourists and locals. In 1827, after the Greek Independence War had ended, it served as the first capital of the newly founded Greek state for a while. Today, the island is mostly famous for pistachios, chock-a-block full of pistachio trees, and thought to be the best in the world for the stuff. It’s worth visiting the famous Aphea Temple, dedicated to goddess Athena, the Saint Nektarios Monastery and the nearby uninhabited Islet of Moni, where wild peacocks and deer stroll uninterrupted.

Crete

3.  Crete

You’ll need a car to explore Greece’s biggest island, but if you’re after golden beaches, crumbly old towns, world-class museums and UNESCO Heritage sites,  Crete  ticks every box. Chania in the west is the liveliest part of the island, while Sitia in the east is famed for its pristine coves and sandy beaches – a perfect rural and picturesque escape. Nature seekers could hike Samaria, Europe’s longest gorge, culture hunters should track down the Minoan palaces, and kids are guaranteed a good time at the island’s countless waterparks.

Why go?  Much more than just an all-inclusive beach holiday hotspot, Crete is a mish-mash of fabulous stuff to see, do, eat and drink.

Santorini

4.  Santorini

The scenery in  Santorini , one of the Cyclades islands in the Aegean Sea, seems crafted by the Greek gods: whitewashed villages crown the island with views over its majestic coastlines, rural vineyards span huge stretches inland and the beaches are black, red, and out of this world. There’s a ridiculous amount for explorers, foodies and culture vultures to discover, from archaeological sites to swimming spots and brilliant wine and food. And trust us: this place is  even  more beautiful IRL than it looks on the ’gram.

Zakynthos

5.  Zakynthos

Better known as Zante, Zakynthos draws a party-ready crowd to its notorious Laganas nightlife strip, but this sunstruck Ionian isle – known by the Venetians as ‘the flower of the East’ – is also blessed with some of the Med’s most beautiful scenery. This includes the spectacular Shipwreck Beach, whose bright-blue waters hemmed in by sheer white cliffs can only be reached by boat, and Zakynthos Marine Park, home to slippery seals and savvy turtles. It’s truly wild – in multiple senses of the word.

Tinos

6.  Tinos

Famous for its carved marble-fronted buildings – and, increasingly, its burgeoning food scene – Tinos is yet another jewel in the Cyclades archipelago. To get there, you’ll need to fly to Mykonos and catch a ferry. It’s worth the journey: some of the best Greek wines are produced here, and chefs from all over Europe have opened restaurants among its sage-scented hills. Most are situated in the main town of Chora – we recommend the traditional Greek menu at Thalassaki.

Naxos

7.  Naxos

The largest of the Cyclades islands, Naxos is also one of the least explored – which means you can expect secluded sandy beaches and a low-key, laidback atmosphere that’ll make the pressures of everyday life feel worlds away. Packing an incredible amount of variety into an incredibly small space, this is a place where you can venture up into tiny high-flung mountain villages or laze on an endless chain of silky sand beaches away from the madding tourist crowds.

Corfu

8.  Corfu

Italianate villages, ornate palaces and romantic beaches are on the cards if you visit the lush island where the Durrell family once lived. With its sundry influences left by past invaders,  Corfu  is a place where you can drink ginger ale with your Greek salad, stroll streets packed with Byzantine and Venetian architecture and meet modern-day monks in Paleokastritsa’s spectacular medieval monastery. And after a hard day’s sightseeing and stuffing your face, you’ll obviously want to jump straight into the Ionian Sea – never not a stunning shade of turquoise blue.

Rhodes

9.  Rhodes

Way back when – and we’re talking way, way back –  Rhodes  was home to the Colossus, one of the world’s Seven Wonders. An earthquake may have destroyed that ol’ thing in 226BBC, but the island’s Unesco world heritage-classed old town is still steeped in charm and history – thanks to a series of dazzling topsy-turvy medieval inns and fourteenth-century knight’s houses that stand to this day. Head outside the city, and the mountain villages and cliff-top towns you’ll come across are just as magical as any fairytale location. And with plenty of chic shops, decent restaurants and lively bars, you’re guaranteed some modern magic, too.

Kastellorizo

10.  Kastellorizo

At the edge of Greece, right opposite the Turkish coastal town of Kaş, you'll find Kastellorizo (aka Megisti), the island furthest from the Greek capital. It's a flight or a boat ride away from the island of Rhodes in Dodecanese, and though it's a bit of a journey to the island, it's absolutely worth it. This is a remote paradise with colourful buildings, seafood for days and seriously chilled out vibes. Plus, it has a fascinating history – make sure to visit the castle of the Knights Hospitaller overlooking the Aegean Sea, and the glorious 4 th century BC Lycian tomb below it. The fort-monastery of Agios Georgios of the Mountain also boasts one of the best views on the island (you just need to get up 315 steps first).

Thessaloniki

11.  Thessaloniki

Once the second city of the Byzantine Empire – and later a thriving Ottoman port city connecting east and west – Thessaloniki has only been part of Greece since 1912. And that really shows. This place doesn’t feel like Greece you see in tourist brochures: its central market, Kapani, has all the colour and chaos of an Istanbul bazaar, and much Ottoman architecture remains throughout the city centre – you can even visit the house where Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the father of modern Turkey, was born. The harbourside Ladadika area hums with some of the wildest, most fun nightlife in the Balkan peninsula, with most bars and clubs open until 6am and beyond. The old town is perfect for the aimless morning-after mooch – and the ouzo and  bougatsa  breakfast pastries in these parts are unrivalled.

Kalamata

12.  Kalamata

The city of Kalamata in the Peloponnese is home to the ancient ruins of Messenia, the picturesque Navarino Lagoon beach, and also those very famous olives you may recognise the name from. Few tourists venture to these parts, which is great news for you. To explore the wider region, base yourself at the Ant Farm – a beautiful farmhouse just outside the city, where you can stay in one of ten treehouses nestled within the olive trees.

Mykonos

13.  Mykonos

Dubbed the ‘Greek Ibiza’,  Mykonos  is where you’ll find world-famous DJs headlining superclubs while a jet-set crowd mingle on yachts and private jets. But this Cyclades island is not just for the uber-privileged: there are plenty of cute hotels, affordable gourmet restaurants and quiet corners still relatively untouched by the tourism industry. So when you’re done hanging out at the beach clubs and traditional tavernas, just follow the tangled web of dirt-smattered backroads – chances are, there’ll be a heavenly beach waiting at the end.

9 overlooked destinations in Greece you need to visit at least once

Lori Zaino

Greece is famous for its picture-perfect beaches and romantic island escapes. One of TPG's favorite destinations to visit, Greece won last year's TPG editor's choice award as the top travel destination of the year in 2021, thanks to its sensible health measures , new influx of hotels, resorts, and flight routes, and its unwavering support of the cruise industry .

Sign up to receive the daily TPG newsletter for more travel and airline news.

While 2021 was an ideal time to see some of Greece's more popular tourist destinations with fewer crowds at more affordable prices, as post-pandemic travel picks up, it's time once again to consider some of Greece's underrated destinations.

cities to visit in greece reddit

When it comes to Greece, we encourage travelers to think outside the box. The country has hundreds of islands , but also an expansive mainland rife with natural wonders such as mountains and marine parks, as well as vineyards and historic monuments. For alternatives to popular spots like Santorini , Mykonos and Athens , consider one of these more underrated destinations in Greece.

Related: Why the one Greek island I'd always avoided is now one of my favorites

1. Kastellorizo

cities to visit in greece reddit

You may have never even heard of Kastellorizo, an island also known as Megisti, until now. Closer to Turkey than to Greece, the island will captivate you. Ease yourself in and start with its beautiful harbor, where the sun shines down on colorful neoclassical buildings scattered along the seaside.

Just like many Aegean and Mediterranean islands, Kastellorizo features a blue grotto sea cave to explore by boat. Another must-see is the Palace of the Grand Master of the Knights of Rhode, which offers views of neighboring Turkey from its perch on a reddish hill.

2. Oh Alonissos Marine Park

cities to visit in greece reddit

The largest protected marine area in Europe , Alonissos Marine Park is one of the best destinations in Greece to view marine life, most notably Mediterranean monk seals. It's also a prime spot to scuba dive , snorkel or even visit historic monasteries and churches.

The park is made up of several islands (some uninhabited) that are covered in pine and strawberry trees, orchids, wildflowers and herbs such as wild sage and oregano. Underwater, there are numerous types of seagrass that more than 300 marine species call home. Visitors may also spot dolphins, sperm whales and loggerhead turtles in the Alonissos waters.

cities to visit in greece reddit

The hills of Mount Olympus hold far more than just tales of Greek mythology. They're also home to the town of Rapsani and its accompanying vineyards. Rapsani is a red wine created from a blend of three different grapes: Xinomavro, Krassato and Stavroto. Visiting this sloping wine region is truly an off-the-beaten-path experience.

In order to access the vineyards that climb up the hills, you'll need to get off the road and drive along dirt trails. Pair a visit to the most famous winery in the area, Tsantali, with a trip to the nearby Mount Olympus National Park.

4. Nafplion

cities to visit in greece reddit

Nafplion is one of the most beautiful and romantic towns in the Peloponnese region of Greece for an alternative seaside holiday. An easy drive from Athens, Nafplion features a picturesque old town and harbor that are perfect for strolling.

Arvanitia Beach is pebbly but has clear turquoise water ideal for a refreshing swim. Make sure to visit the Bourtzi Castle, a 15th-century medieval fortress that sits on a tiny islet just off the coast of the charming town.

5. The Athens Riviera

cities to visit in greece reddit

If you don't have enough time to head to the Greek islands , a visit to the Athens Riviera, a stunning stretch of coastline, gives you an easy dose of sand and sun. Just 30 minutes away from the Greek capital, the coastal area is accessible by car or even tram from Athens , so you don't need to fret over the ferries.

The area teems with many beautiful beaches, plus fancy nightclubs, quaint harbors, hidden sea caves and tranquil fishing coves. One of the most popular areas to visit with a few sandy beaches is Voula, which also has towering rocks that overlook Lake Vouliagmeni.

Spend the night at the new(ish) Four Seasons Astir Palace Hotel, a fancy hideaway just 30 minutes from Athens city center on the tip of the Riviera.

6. Vikos Aoos National Park

cities to visit in greece reddit

Greece has an immense amount of natural beauty beyond just its most famous islands. If you're an outdoorsy type, we recommend heading straight to Vikos Aoos National Park in northwest Greece.

The park is named after its precipitous gorges, Vikos Gorge and Aoos Gorge. Besides exploring these two epic natural wonders, travelers can enjoy outdoor activities among the many rivers, canyons, lakes, mountains and woodlands within the park. Expect to see a number of different bird species, plus animals like otters, foxes, wolves and deer — and watch out for brown bears!

7. Kastoria

cities to visit in greece reddit

Part of Greece but in the Macedonia region, Kastoria is often compared to the Amalfi Coast , only without the tourists. The Hellenic town sits along a peninsula that juts out into Lake Orestiada. The lake — deemed a national monument in Greece — is backed by rocky, wooded mountains.

Besides enjoying the lake, visitors can explore the Byzantine churches and Ottoman architecture in Kastoria. One of the most important attractions is the Panagia Mavriotissa Monastery, which sits on the shores of the lake and dates back to the 11th century.

8. Elafonisos

cities to visit in greece reddit

An island often frequented by Greek travelers, Elafonisos sits off the coast of the Peloponnese region near Athens. Although it's tiny, Elafonisos still has abundant white-sand beaches and crystal clear waters. Besides the island's glorious beaches (Simos Beach is a favorite for its unique shape), there are ancient ruins to explore.

Divers can appreciate the island's underwater ruins, too. Pavlopetri is one of the oldest complete sunken towns found underwater. The best part? Elafonisos is only a 10-minute ferry ride from Pounta, a port in the Peloponnese region, perfect for travelers who want to minimize travel time on their vacation or who get seasick on long ferry rides.

9. Lefkas (Lefkada)

This Greek island in the Ionian Sea is one of the few islands in Greece you can actually drive to — it's connected to mainland Greece by a causeway. Even though it's technically not a freestanding island, it's just as breathtaking as its island neighbors, with white-sand beaches and charming Greek villages . One of the island's most iconic beaches is Porto Katsiki, backed by an enormous, awe-inspiring cliff.

cities to visit in greece reddit

Windsurfers should head to its southern beach Vassiliki, while kitesurfers will prefer the beaches in the north of this breezy island. If you need a sand and sun break, check out the fishing cove Sivota, visit the coastal village of Vlichos or soak in the natural beauty of Karia, a tiny hamlet located in a fertile valley further inland.

Bottom line

cities to visit in greece reddit

Even if you want to spend a romantic holiday in Santorini , a family weekend in Athens or a getaway partying in Mykonos , remember that Greece is a large country with hundreds of islands , 10 national parks and many other great places to visit. There are plenty of destinations for travelers who want to get off the tourist track or try something a little different.

Traveling to lesser-known spots means you'll be able to experience more traditional Greek culture, sample local wine and cuisine, find those stunning deserted beaches or visit some of the country's lesser-visited monuments and attractions.

Let’s make one thing clear: No matter where you go in Greece , you’ll have a good time. The Mediterranean nation is filled with spectacular places to explore, from its historically rich cities to its charming inland towns, and, of course, across its famed islands . But if you need a little help narrowing down where to go next, here are 15 best places to visit in Greece.

Gautier Houba/Travel + Leisure

As both Greece’s capital and the nation’s largest city, Athens deserves at least a day or two of exploration. Visitors can head to popular attractions like the  Acropolis and Parthenon, but more modern neighborhoods like Exarchia, known for its bohemian flair, are worth checking out, too.

There are hundreds of Greek islands to choose from, but one gaining more attention by the minute is the positively quaint Milos . Accessible via direct flights from Athens, this island is the place to go for total rest and relaxation. Come to explore desolate beaches tucked in between craggy cliffs, dine on octopus in cafes that are sprinkled across the island, and enjoy quiet evenings sipping local wine while watching the sun dip into the azure waters.

Looking for a more lively atmosphere? Head to Mykonos, an island known for always being a good time. Also accessible via direct flights from Athens, Mykonos is the place to be during the summer for beachside parties that stretch long into the night (and often into the next day, too). Of course, there’s more to the island than just parties. It's home to its fair share of gorgeous beaches and historical sites, including Kato Mili, a row of four massive windmills built by the Venetians in the 16th century.

History buffs will love the town of Delphi, located about a 2.5-hour drive northwest of Athens. The community was home to the Oracle of Delphi , which people from all over the Mediterranean traveled to see. Here, visitors can still explore the Temple of Apollo's remains, along with several ancient theaters and stadiums preserved through the millennia.

Admire waters a shade of blue you never knew existed in the Halkidiki region, located in northern Greece. This area is best known for its gorgeous beaches, which come with equally alluring soft sand, so you can lounge about all day.

Kirsty Nadine/Getty Images

Find even more historical delights, visit Epidaurus, at the northeastern end of the Peloponnese. It’s beloved by archeology buffs for its Ancient Theatre , built in the fourth century B.C. to honor the god of medicine, Asclepius. And its still a place where visitors can watch live performances in the summer.

Sebastian Condrea/Getty Images

The seaside community of Gythio is admittedly quiet, but it's by far one of the best places to visit when you need to get away from it all. Filled with colorful homes and golden-sand beaches, Gythio is also favored for its sea turtles that come and lay their eggs.

Lara_Uhryn/Getty Images

For unbelievable views, pay a visit to Meteora, located in Thessaly. The area is made up of massive rock formations reaching toward the sky. Inside the gorgeous formations sit several monasteries , which made their way onto the UNESCO World Heritage Site list.

GlobalP/Getty Images

Sifnos, a small island reachable by ferry from Athens, is another spot known for its relaxing atmosphere. Plus, it's filled with so many beaches, you can find a large patch of sandy shoreline all for yourself, even in the height of summer.

Igor Tichonow/Getty Images

Mix in island time with a quick geology lesson on Kefalonia. The island, located west of the mainland, is home to the Drogarati Cave , which comes with awe-inspiring stalactites and stalagmites hanging off the ceiling and jutting out from the sea floor, respectively.

Irjaliina Paavonpera/Travel + Leisure

Want to get a taste of Italy and Greece all in one go? Make your way to the stunning, romantic island of Corfu. Thanks to its proximity to its neighboring European nation, the island comes with plenty of Italian influence, reflected in its architecture, food, and way of life.

Thessaloniki

Vladislav Zolotov/Getty Images

Find an urban escape in northern Greece with a visit to Thessaloniki. This port city is filled with historic sites like the White Tower of Thessaloniki and Arch of Galerius, along with world-class restaurants and contemporary art museums that will leave you inspired.

Messolonghi

Stamatios Manousis/Getty Images

Get a different sea view in Messolonghi, located on the western coast of Greece. This town sits on a serene sea lake, with many who live here still making a living off fishing in the area. And though the town has great historical significance (especially around the Greek Revolution), it’s still an under-the-radar gem for international tourists.

Make one more historic stop at Olympia , this time for a lesson in sports history. Located on the western side of the Peloponnese, Olympia was the site of the very first Olympic Games. Visitors can visit the ancient stadium and the temples of Zeus and Hera all in one trip.

Posnov/Getty Images

Head to the eastern Peloponnese to the beautiful city of Nafplio. As Visit Greece explains, the myth behind the town is that it was founded by Nafplios, the son of Poseidon. Today, it's filled with ancient sites, including monuments and castles galore, all worthy of exploring on your next Greek vacation. Get packing !

There are plenty of resorts overlooking the Ionian Sea and restaurants, bars and shops lining the streets in the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Old Town of Corfu. Santorini's classic Cycladic architecture (think: whitewashed buildings with blue-domed roofs) makes this archipelago one of the most stunning and frequented of all of the Greek isles. On the main island of Thira, you'll find beautiful red and black sand beaches and well-preserved archaeological sites thanks to its volcanic history. After exploring Thira's busy tourist sights, take a day trip to quieter Thirassia to experience its quaint villages and untouched wilderness. You'll also want to visit Santorini's acclaimed wineries. Most are concentrated in central Santorini and can be seen during a winery tour. And don't miss catching the sunset from Oia for a postcard-perfect view.

One of the most popular Dodecanese islands, Rhodes hugs Turkey's coastline. Rhodes' large footprint allows for a wide range of activities for vacationers to enjoy. The island's namesake medieval city, which historically hosted the Knights of Saint John, showcases its rich history with well-preserved Gothic structures and several museums. Meanwhile, turquoise waters and sandy stretches like Lindos Beach (which sits alongside a scenic seaside village) and Agathi Beach (set in a picturesque cove) will suit any beach bum, and nature lovers can delight in the verdant Valley of Butterflies. What's more, Rhodes' many villages and cities boast flavorful food offerings and lively nightlife scenes.

Since only a portion of Karpathos is developed for tourism, this Dodecanese island is a haven for those seeking a secluded, low-key getaway. Spend days swimming in crystal-clear water and lounging on unspoiled beaches like Apella and Kyra Panagia. Adventurers can try their hand at windsurfing, a popular activity in the southern bay of Afiartis, or hike some of the island's mountainous trails. Travelers who really want to get away from it all can also take a day trip via boat to Saria or Sokastro, uninhabited and undisturbed islets that were once connected to Karpathos.

Greece's largest island offers something for every traveler. Sun-seekers can lounge on Crete's sandy beaches (such as Vai and the pink sand Elafonisi), and nature lovers can hike through Samaria Gorge in White Mountains National Park. History buffs can explore ancient sites like the Venetian Fortezza in Rethymnon, or visit Heraklion to see the Palace of Knossos (where the mythical Minotaur reportedly roamed) and check out the esteemed Heraklion Archaeological Museum. Everyone will enjoy savoring authentic Cretan fare – including graviera (a Gruyere-like cheese) and dakos (barley rusk topped with tomato, oregano and olive oil) – at the island's tavernas.

Although much of Kefalonia's impressive Venetian architecture was destroyed during an earthquake in 1953, the island still feels magical thanks to its diverse landscape. Wander through charming villages like Assos and Fiscardo to see colorful houses and beautiful churches. Then, soak up some sun on one of the island's pebbly or sandy beaches (Myrtos is the most popular), or take a dip in the clear turquoise water to snorkel or scuba dive. If you'd rather get an adrenaline rush, hike to the top of Megas Soros (the highest point in the Ionian Islands) in Mount Ainos National Park or explore one of Kefalonia's underground caves.

cities to visit in greece reddit

Head to Zakynthos for its breathtaking yet rugged coastline full of hidden cove beaches, some of which are home to the endangered caretta caretta sea turtle species. Popular spots include Navagio (or Shipwreck) Beach – which can only be admired from a distance during a boat tour  – and the magical Blue Caves, where the reflection of the sky and the white limestone turns the water an ethereal shade of blue. Check out the Venetian Castle that overlooks Zakynthos' main town, then visit the Post-Byzantine Art Museum of Zakynthos to peruse art exhibits.

This small island's proximity to Athens makes it a popular weekend getaway for city-dwelling Greeks. But since Serifos is less visited by international crowds, the island retains a distinct authenticity and an opportunity to unwind. Here, visitors should embrace the art of doing nothing. But don't worry, the island's secluded stretches of sand like Ganema Beach (popular with the yacht crowd) and Psili Ammos (known for its soft sand) are perfect for doing just that. More social vacationers can also shop for souvenirs or sip ouzo at open-air cafes in the villages of Chora and Livadi.

cities to visit in greece reddit

Most Greek islands are known for their beaches, but Skiathos features some of the region's best. Here, you'll find more than 60 awe-inspiring options, including secluded Lalaria Beach and clothing-optional Banana Beach. Skiathos' vibrant blue water also makes it a terrific place to go sailing. Or, get picture-perfect views from above by hiking some of the island's 120-plus miles of trails. When you've gotten your fill of sun and sand, spend some time admiring the historic Monastery of Panagia Evangelistria. No visit would be complete without heading to Skiathos Town to eat authentic Greek cuisine and party at a local nightclub.

cities to visit in greece reddit

Spend your next vacation in Syros if you want to be surrounded by history and culture without rubbing elbows with hordes of tourists. Syros offers a quieter scene than other Cycladic islands, making it easy to leisurely meander through its charming towns. Check out Ermoupoli's architectural marvels, such as its town hall and the Apollon Theater, then climb the hill above Ermoupoli to Ano Syros, where you'll discover medieval fortifications and panoramic city views. After a few hours of sightseeing, unwind on one of Syros' sandy beaches.

Gorgeous scenery is available everywhere you turn on the Cycladic island of Milos. This volcanic island boasts more than 40 beaches surrounded by jaw-dropping rock formations (check out the lunar landscape at Sarakiniko), as well as houses sporting a variety of vibrant colors. Plus, Milos features multiple caves (including underwater options for scuba diving), hot springs and hiking trails. For a dose of local history, check out the island's catacombs, ancient theater and Archaeological Museum. The latter houses a life-size replica of Alexandros of Antioch's world-renowned Venus de Milo sculpture, which was discovered on the island in 1820.

cities to visit in greece reddit

An ideal spot for slow travel, Astypalea was made for long days of sunning on the sand, hiking through rocky countryside and perusing quaint villages. Shorelines here range from the sandy cove of Agios Konstantinos, which offers spectacular views of the hilltop village of Chora, to the rugged Kaminakia, which is worth the extra effort it takes to get there. Visitors can spend time hiking between beaches while passing Byzantine chapels and scenic monasteries along the way. What's more, the main village of Chora features a Venetian castle, idyllic old town streets to stroll through and a variety of locally produced cheeses and honey to sample.

cities to visit in greece reddit

Part of the Saronic Gulf, Hydra is one of the closest Greek islands to Athens and immediately stands out from its neighbors for its lack of motor vehicles. That's right – you'll have to meander your way around the car-free cobblestone streets on foot or on one of the many mules and horses that reside on the island. But such romanticism is a large part of Hydra's appeal to travelers. While here, walk the island's pebbly shorelines and explore its charming seaside towns like Hydra Town, where you'll discover lavish mansions (many now turned into museums) of elite families of yore and some of Hydra's best nightlife venues.

cities to visit in greece reddit

Folegandros offers a completely different experience than its Cycladic neighbor, Santorini. Here, you'll find undeveloped, hard-to-reach beaches surrounded by steep cliffs, lending a quiet remoteness far from the beach clubs of more touristy islands. Rugged beaches like Katergo and Livadaki are must-visits for their scenery and seclusion, while Agali is a top spot for its nearby tavernas. The clifftop old town of Chora, the largest village on the island, is also worth exploring for its whitewashed architecture, local culture and unbeatable sunset views.

Koufonisia's islands may be among the smallest of the Cyclades, but they offer everything you need for a relaxing seaside getaway. Pano Koufonisi (Koufonisia's only inhabited island) is where you'll find the destination's most beautiful beaches, some of which are clothing optional. After the day's adventures, eat, drink and shop in Chora, the island's capital. For a more secluded feel, take a day trip to Kato Koufonisi to swim or sightsee by boat. A third island, Keros, is not accessible because of its status as a protected archaeological site, but you'll likely see it from afar while traveling.

Paros, one of the most central Cycladic islands, is a mecca for water sports activities. At the island's sun-drenched beaches, travelers can windsurf, kitesurf, scuba dive and go boating, among other pursuits. Away from the water, visitors will find bustling Parikia, which boasts numerous boutiques, restaurants and bars. Paros' capital also features several noteworthy historical sites, including the sixth-century Panagia Ekatontapiliani (which means "Church with 100 Gates" in English) and a 13th-century Venetian castle. Arrive in summer to attend the Festival at the Park, a popular event held annually at the island's 800-acre Paros Park.

Naxos is the largest of the Cyclades, meaning there's a lot more shore to go around. On this unassuming island, you'll find plenty of beaches to write home about, from popular Plaka to scenic Agios Prokopios, and lots of water sports activities. Due to the Meltemi wind that blows from the north, Naxos is an excellent destination for windsurfing and kitesurfing, so be sure to sign up for a lesson. Also save time for exploring ancient ruins like the temples of Apollo, Demeter and Dionysus.

5 best cities to visit in Greece

Here’s your go-to guide to the spots you don’t want to miss..

Amber Charmei

Cities rarely top the list on a Greek itinerary—many travelers just carve out a quick visit to Athens to see the Parthenon, then catch a ferry to the islands. And there’s nothing wrong with that.

But as someone who traded my hometown of Manhattan for Thessaloniki and Athens two decades ago, I am here to tell you: You’re missing out. Visiting the best cities in Greece can add so much to a vacation. Hear me out: Besides the sights and museums, you can live like a local, lounging in cool cafes, checking out the contemporary restaurant scene, and shopping at artisan-run boutiques. Plus, some of these cities are cheaper than high-profile island destinations—and all have easy access to beaches, either right in town or within close reach.

Of course, this doesn’t mean that you need to skip the islands. There are many cities that make a great addition to an itinerary—or a good jumping-off spot for island-hopping. Here are my favorite five cities to check out.

Athens: For classical antiquities and avant-garde art

Monastiraki square and Acropolis in Athens, Greece

Even without the Parthenon , the Acropolis Museum , the Ancient Agora , and the National Archaeological Museum —all magnificent places to see— Athens would make a worthy destination. The city’s urban energy is sharpened by its contrasts, like the untamed nature surrounding Mt. Lycabettus , where you can hike to the top (or take a funicular) to enjoy a view that extends from the Parthenon all the way to the port of Piraeus and the Saronic Gulf . And then there are all the neighborhoods to explore, from the counter-cultural haven of Exarchia (for great street art and vintage clothing shops) to the elite Kolonaki district (home to the Benaki Museum of Greek Culture and the Museum of Cycladic Art ).

Highlights in the center of Athens include watching the Evzones (the changing of the guard) at Syntagma Square and checking out the catch of the day at the Varvakeios central market . On balmy summer nights, enjoy opera at the ancient Odeon of Herodes-Atticus near the Acropolis, a concert in the lively Gazi district, or a film under the stars at one of the city’s open-air cinemas, like Dexameni and Thisseon .

Where to eat : For a low-key dinner, Tanini Agapi Mou (which translates as “tannins, my love”) is a fun destination with natural and biodynamic Greek wines and snacks (cheeses, salads, bruschetta). Kolonaki’s Filippou serves classic homestyle dishes like beef stewed in tomato and wine or artichokes in an egg-lemon sauce, and the white tablecloths are a nice touch.

Hotel picks : Few hotels in Athens are as close to the Parthenon as the Herodion , in the serene Koukaki area. There’s a splendid view of the monument from its rooftop restaurant, as well as from some of the rooms. Elegant, minimalist Mona , converted from a 1950s textile factory in the sociable Psyrri district, is perfect for a design-forward stay.

Tip : As impressive as all the classical antiquities are, you don’t want to miss modern culture in Athens. A visit to the National Gallery gives a thorough introduction to the Greek art of the post-Byzantine era to the present (don’t miss the works of 20th-century masters like Tsarouchis and Moralis). The EMST, also known as the National Museum of Contemporary Art , is a great pick for avant-garde exhibitions, both Greek and international.

Thessaloniki: For a university town with ancient vibes

View of the Thessaloniki city, Greece

Greece’s northern port city—five hours by car or train, or a very short flight from Athens—offers a completely different experience. While a distant second to Athens in population, in lifestyle and culture, it’s second to none. This youthful yet sophisticated university town has been millennia in the making, with monuments from three empires casually integrated into the urban fabric.

Highlights include the Roman Agora and the Rotunda , the many UNESCO-recognized Paleochristian and Byzantine monuments like Agia Sophia and Agios Dimitrios , and the Ottoman-era Alaca Imaret and Bey Hamam . A wealth of museums—from the superb Archaeological Museum and the Museum of Byzantine Culture to the MOMus Museum of Contemporary Art span pre-history through the avant-garde.

Around sunset, everyone heads to the glamorous Belle-Epoque seafront for a volta—Greece’s answer to Italy’s passeggiata. Later in the evening, join locals at the bars and tavernas in the Ladadika neighborhood to see why Thessaloniki is known for nightlife.

Where to eat : Bougatsa (a flaky sweet or savory pie) is a favorite morning treat, especially from Bantis . For lunch, it’s hard to find a more satisfying meal than crisp fried salt cod with skordalia (a zesty garlic spread) served on a sheet of paper at either of the two Bakaliarakia locations by the harbor. For a sweet taste of Asia Minor, visit Chatzis Dairy in the central Modiano Market . Try the kazan dibi—a thick, caramelized buffalo milk pudding.

Hotel picks : The elegant Electra Palace , overlooking central Aristotelous Square and the sea, is worth the splurge. Zeus is Loose , also central, has huge windows looking over a park. It’s a sociable choice, with a rooftop bar and dorm rooms with bunk beds and shared baths (though you can also book a double with a private baths).

Tip : Thessaloniki is the ideal urban basecamp for a variety of experiences. Halkidiki , just an hour’s drive down the coastline, has famously dreamy beaches, like Kavourotrypes . Meanwhile, the world of Alexander the Great still dazzles at Ancient Pella and the Museum of the Royal Tombs at Aigai , each also an hour away by car. Want to go island hopping? Ferries connect Thessaloniki with some of the best islands in the North Aegean: Chios, Samos, Lesvos, and Limnos.

Chania: For Cretan character in a Venetian setting

Chania, Old Venetian Harbour, Crete

My family has a summer home in Chania . Yet no matter how many times I visit, I can’t get enough of the photogenic Venetian Harbor , with its tangle of romantic, jasmine-scented alleys.

Despite its popularity with visitors, Chania still retains a strong sense of place, particularly in districts like Splanzia (just east of the port) or in lush, aristocratic Chalepa (a short taxi ride or pleasant walk to the east). Here, amid birdsong and neoclassical mansions, you’ll find the new Archaeological Museum , the Russian-style Church of Mary Magdalene in its large garden, and the Museum-Residence of Eleftherios Venizelos , a key figure in the history of modern Greece.

Nearly every afternoon in summer, you’ll find me at the elegant old cafe in the Municipal Garden , where locals love to gather to read the paper, sip thick Greek coffee served in a copper briki, and socialize under the trees. The beautiful outdoor Municipal Cinema , also in the garden, shows film in their original language with Greek subtitles.

Where to eat : Locals take a break from their errands for a Cretan-style bougatsa—here, it’s filled with tangy cheese and topped with sugar. I love Bougatsa Chania , which is right across from the post office, in case you have postcards to mail. For a traditional Cretan lunch or dinner, Mezedoscholeio is a good value. Reviewers rave about the lamb and the baked feta. Try to snag one of the tables on the patio.

Hotel picks : In a Venetian building, Splanzia Boutique Hotel hits high marks for atmosphere and a homemade breakfast served in the courtyard. Want to save money? I recommend the friendly Kumba Hostel , a short stroll from Koum Kapi Beach —you can book a double room with a private bath, or for deep savings, there are shared, dorm-style spaces.

Tip : The Samaria Gorge is unforgettable. Hikers set out for Xyloskalo (elevation 4,035 feet) close to dawn. From there, they begin the 10-mile descent to Agia Roumeli on the south coast, a village so isolated by rugged terrain that it can’t be reached by car. After a dip in the Libyan sea, a boat takes you to Sfakia for transfer back to Chania.

Rhodes Town: For medieval splendor and island-hopping

Greece, Dodecanese, Rhodes, Ipocratous square

The medieval Old Town of Rhodes is a UNESCO World Heritage site that was once home to the Knights of Rhodes (later known as the Knights of Malta). Highlights include the Palace of the Grand Master —magical on a warm evening—and the Street of the Knights .

Just outside the old city walls, Rhodes is packed with a variety of sights from different eras.Charming Mandraki Harbour was once the site of the Colossus of Rhodes , one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. Very close to it, you’ll find the National Theater of Rhodes —a stellar example of Italian modernism. Across the street from the theater, by the Muslim cemetery and the Mosque of Mourat Reis , is a (hidden) highlight: the Villa Cleobulus , Lawrence Durrell’s home after WWII. The setting is just as he described it in Reflections on a Marine Venus (the perfect read before a visit to Rhodes), while the Marine Venus herself is now located at Rhodes’ Archaeological Museum .

Where to eat : A piece of sweet or savory phyllo pie fresh from the wood oven at Fournariko makes a perfect breakfast on the go. For dinner, 4 Rodies is a favorite with locals and visitors alike thanks to its homestyle dishes (don’t miss the dolmadiakia—stuffed vine leaves) and plenty of vegetarian options.

Where to stay : On a recent visit, I stayed at the spacious A33 Rhodes Old Town House with a large group of friends. It’s full of character—think, a pebble mosaic floor in the hall, exposed stone walls, and a velvet-cushioned reading nook. Solo travelers and couples might prefer the atmospheric 10GR Boutique Hotel and Wine Bar , in a historic stone building with a modern design.

Tip : All over Greece, KTEL buses run between towns and cities. At the KTEL station near Liberty Gate , you’ll find buses that will take you to fabulous beaches like Anthony Quinn Bay , about half an hour from Rhodes Town. I liked it so much that I threw away a plane ticket to spend two extra days here, snorkeling with colorful minnows and reading under the pines.

Corfu Town: For aristocratic glamour with an Italian (sometimes French, sometimes British) accent

The Old Town at sunset, Corfu Town, Corfu, Greece

Corfu Town, with its pretty Venetian Fortress , neoclassical houses, and warm palette of ochres and dusky pinks, offers a Greek-island experience with an extra hit of glamour. The Old Town , punctuated by the tall belfry of the 16th-century Church of Saint Spyridon , is recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. Landmarks from French and British rule give Corfu Town a cosmopolitan mood, especially around Spiananda Square . At the north end is the Regency-style Palace of St. Michael and St. George, now the Corfu Museum of Asian Art , with one of the finest collections in Europe. Meanwhile, along the western edge of the square, the early 19th-century Liston (Corfu’s famous Rue-du-Rivoli-like colonnade built during French rule) makes a great setting for a morning espresso or afternoon spritz. Even in sports, Corfu has an international flavor—you might see a friendly cricket match in the square.

Where to eat : With its fairy lights and beautifully set tables, the courtyard of the Venetian Well makes a dreamy setting for enjoying a five- or seven-course tasting menu of dishes like rockfish risotto and braised lamb with apricot and cured lemon. To try Corfu’s Italian-influenced dishes, like bordetto (fish with a zesty tomato sauce) or sofrito (beef in sauce of garlic, vinegar, and wine), visit Rouvas .

Hotel picks : Its central location and modern rooms, some with stellar views of Spianada Square , make the Arcadion Hotel a very good choice. The Angsana Corfu , about six miles south of Corfu Town, has a massive infinity pool overlooking the Ionian sea.

Tip : I love to come here during Easter week to see Corfu’s elaborate celebrations including a staged earthquake at the Church of Virgin Mary of the Foreigners (held on the morning of Holy Saturday), followed later by the “botides”—when Corfiots throw large clay vessels off balconies (watch your head!). But this is a wildly popular time to visit, so book early.

Should I Visit Mainland Greece, Or The Islands?

A question most visitors to Greece will come up with at some point, is “should I visit mainland Greece, or the islands?” This is a really good question, especially coming from people who haven’t seen much of Greece. Here is a guide introducing all regions of Greece.

Should I visit mainland Greece, or the islands?

To begin with, let’s clarify one thing. The question “should I visit mainland Greece, or the islands?” has no right or wrong answer. Greece is an all-around beautiful country, and you can’t really go very wrong with your choices.

Should you visit Santorini in Greece?

That said, before you decide where to go in Greece you should ask yourself a few questions.

As an example, you could consider whether you want to take a ferry or a domestic flight to one of the islands. You could ask yourself if you prefer to rent a car and go on a roadtrip , or use public transportation instead.

Understandably, the most important factor to consider is which parts of Greece you really want to visit.

Are you fascinated by the photos you’ve seen of the Santorini caldera? Did Meteora strike you as the one place you must absolutely see in Greece? Would you just prefer to go off-the-beaten track, where few other tourists venture?

Amazing monasteries in Meteora, Greece

If you do a little research before your trip, the answer might just present itself.

Study the Geography of Greece

If you have never been to Greece, start by having a look at the map of the country. You will see that there is a large continental area, mainland Greece. To the east, the west and the south, you will notice several groups of islands.

Should I visit mainland Greece or the islands? Map of Greece

Greece is divided in nine large geographical regions, of which six belong to the mainland. From north to south, you will see Thrace, Macedonia, Epirus, Thessaly, Sterea Ellada and the Peloponnese.

The remaining three regions are the islands. You will see the Aegean Islands, comprising several subgroups, the Ionian Islands and Crete. This article offers an introduction to the Greek island groups .

Getting from one part of the country to another might not be entirely straightforward. So my best advice is to limit the areas of Greece you want to visit, especially if you only have a few days.

Combining several areas, or several islands in different island groups, is not only time-consuming but can also be rather expensive.

Taking a ferry in Greece

This article with travel tips for planning a trip to Greece might help you start building your itinerary. If you really want to visit several areas, or many different islands, your best bet might be an organized tour or a cruise, which will take the hassle away.

What is there to do on mainland Greece

Apart from certain areas, mainland Greece is probably not as a well-known destination as “the Greek islands”. Visitors are often surprised to find out that Greece not only has plenty of mountains, but also quite a few ski centres!

Taygetos mountain in the Peloponnese with snow on

Assuming, however, that you are not really interested in winter holidays in Greece, there is plenty to do on mainland Greece. There are many amazing beaches, plenty of archaeological sites, and quite a few picturesque towns and charming villages.

As mentioned earlier, Greece is divided in six main geographical regions, each of which has its own character and appeal. Here’s a short introduction to those areas.

Athens – The capital

Greece’s capital doesn’t need a special introduction. It’s a bustling, busy city with lots to do, and tons of tourist attractions. The most famous attraction in Athens is the Acropolis.

The best time to visit the Acropolis is very early in the morning or late evening to avoid the crowds like this!

Apart from the ancient sites , Athens has several museums . It would take you several days to visit all of them.

In addition, budget-minded travellers will find a ton of free things to do in Athens , so they can easily spend a few days here.

Most people choose to stay in Athens for just a couple of days, and then head out to the islands or another area in Greece. Here are two articles that will help you plan your time in Athens:

  • What to do in Athens in 2 days
  • What to do in Athens in 3 days

Sterea Ellada – Ancient sites and unique Easter traditions

Sterea Ellada is the central region of Greece, sometimes referred to as Central Greece. It is the most populated region, as it includes the peninsula called Attica , where Athens is located.

However, there is a lot more to this region of Greece. One of the best known attractions in this area is Delphi . This amazing archaeological site is a popular day trip from Athens, and it’s totally worth it.

Delphi archaeological site mainland Greece

Visit with a guide, and you will find out more about the cult of Apollo and Pythia, the Oracle. Even though her prophecies were ambiguous, her advice was important to everyone.

Nearby Arachova has some pretty unique Easter traditions . It’s not like Easter is not celebrated in other areas of Greece. However, Arachova is pretty special when it comes to Greek Easter celebrations.

People who are visiting Greece during Greek Easter should absolutely consider visiting Arachova. It will offer a different perspective on Greek culture.

If you are looking for more remote places to visit, consider heading out to the mountains of Evritania . You will discover places you never imagined existed in Greece!

Mainland Greece Evritania area

Overall, the region of Sterea Ellada deserves to be properly explored. There are many off-the-beaten track areas where you are unlikely to find any other tourists.

The Peloponnese – The quintessential Greece

I can’t imagine someone who wouldn’t fall in love with the Peloponnese. This is where some of the best known archaeological sites in Greece are located. It’s also where the Greek Revolution against the Ottoman Empire started.

Islands vs the mainland - Nafplion in the Peloponnese

The Peloponnese simply has it all. There are mountains, hiking trails, wineries, archaeological sites, stone villages, dramatic landscapes and plenty of beautiful beaches.

You will find authentic towns, like Kalamata and Tripoli , but also popular coastal resorts, like Stoupa and Kardamyli . You can visit some of the prettiest towns in Greece, like Nafplion and Areopolis , but also lose yourselves in the depths of the wild, uninhabited Mani .

Visiting the Greek islands vs the mainland - Gythio in the Peloponnese

In terms of ancient sites, you will need to return to the Peloponnese if you want to see everything. The popular Mycenae and Epidaurus can be easily visited on a day trip from Athens, possibly with a stop at Ancient Corinth or Acrocorinth . However, there are many more ancient sites in the Peloponnese.

Visit the Ancient Olympia , where the first Olympic Games happened in 776 BC. Drive towards the south and explore Ancient Messene , a surprisingly quiet site with an impressive stadium. Discover the temple of Apollo Epicurius at Bassae , the first Greek monument to have been awarded the UNESCO status.

The Peloponnese is also home to sites from later eras. The fascinating Byzantine site of Mystras should definitely be on your list. You can also explore the castles of Methoni and Koroni , to the west, and Monemvasia , to the east.

Finally, Peloponnese has some of the most beautiful and diverse beaches in Greece. From the amazing Elafonisos , to the popular Finikounta and the long stretches of sand around the Kyparissia area, the Peloponnese has a beach to suit everyone’s taste. Just follow the coastline, and you will bump into one you will love!

Thessaly – Not just the Meteora monasteries

Thessaly region is home to one of the most visited tourist attraction in Greece, the Meteora monasteries . These monasteries built on top of some unique, wild rock formations, are really one of the most amazing things to see in Greece.

Vanessa in Meteora Kalambaka Greece

However, Thessaly has a lot more to offer. The vibrant town of Trikala is one of the most pedestrian-friendly towns in the whole of Greece. Larisa and Volos are also very lively, and you will find that nightlife is pretty active.

The coastal town of Volos in Greece

The Pelion peninsula is a popular destination for Greeks, and not only. In summer, you can visit the beautiful beaches, and go hiking around the beautiful nature. If you visit in winter, you will see an entirely different side, as snow is quite common.

Mainland Greece Mt Pelion

Another favourite destination in Thessaly is Plastira Lake . Visit in autumn, and you will be impressed by the colours and the ambiance! Similarly, you can reach some of the smaller villages, Elati and Pertouli , that keep their cool even in summer.

If you are visiting Thessaly by all means go to Meteora, but do take some time to explore some towns that few tourists have time to visit. You will see a side of Greece that you never knew existed.

Epirus – The land of a thousand faces

An unexpectedly beautiful area of Greece, Epirus is largely mountainous. It has many rivers, lakes and gorges, but it also boasts some of the most beautiful beaches in Greece. You will find beautiful traditional villages, incredible stone bridges, castles and monasteries.

Epirus Greece stone bridge

Epirus is really an all-year-round destination. You can go up all the way to the traditional Zahorohoria , Metsovo and Tzoumerka villages, and explore a part of Greece that not many people get to see. Alternatively, you can stay by the coast, at the most popular resorts of Parga and Syvota , with blue-green waters.

In terms of towns, you should definitely spend some time in Ioannina . It’s a picturesque town with an interesting history, built right on a beautiful lake.

Take some time to visit the castle, the Byzantine Museum, and the little island inside the lake. Stroll around the cobbled streets, sit at one of the numerous cafes and just watch the people go by.

Mainland Greece - Ioannina lake

If you are interested in ancient history, make sure you visit the Nikopolis Ancient Theatre , and the Nekromanteion at Aherontas . This was one of the Gateways to Hades in Ancient Greece, where the mortals came to communicate with the dead.

Depending at the time of year you visit Epirus, you can go kayaking, white-water rafting, or river trekking. Whatever you do, don’t miss hiking around Voidomatis river – the landscapes are out of this world!

If you have only been to a couple of the Greek islands, you will never believe that Epirus is still the same country.

Mainland Greece or the islands - Vicos gorge Epirus Greece

Visit Epirus if you want a combination of quaint mountain villages, pretty towns and lovely beaches. You will experience a totally different side of Greece.

Macedonia – What’s in a name?

You may be familiar with the name Macedonia , and the Macedonia naming dispute . Even if you aren’t, you will probably have heard of Alexander the Great, the king of the ancient Greek kingdom of Macedon.

Statue of Alexander the Great in Thessaloniki, Greece

The name “Macedonia” has been linked to Greece for thousands of years. The Ancient Kingdom of Macedon covered parts of a few modern countries – Greece, Bulgaria, Northern Macedonia, Albania and Serbia.

Many visitors are unaware that modern Greece’s largest geographical region has been called Macedonia ever since the area was annexed to our country, in 1913.

What to do in Macedonia Greece

This region of Greece has a long and rich history. This is where you will find the remains of numerous important ancient Greek cities, such as Vergina , Filippi , Pella and Dion . This is also where you will find Mount Olympus , the mythological residence of the 12 Olympian Gods .

The most important city in Macedonia is Thessaloniki . It’s a fascinating city with tons of ancient ruins, excellent museums, a beautiful upper town and dozens of churches, Byzantine temples and mosques.

Thessaloniki Greece the White Tower

Additionally, it has fantastic traditional markets, a lovely coastal promenade and a vibrant nightlife. From exhibitions to festivals to cultural events, there is always something going on in Thessaloniki!

Thessaloniki has an international airport, and you can fly there year-round. Here is how to get to Thessaloniki city center from the airport .

Beaches and nature in Macedonia

If you are a beach person, Macedonia won’t disappoint you. The beautiful beaches of Chalkidiki are some of the best in Greece. According to the people of Thessaloniki, “there is no place like Chalkidiki”!

Macedonia is also full of mountains and lakes, and it’s ideal if you want to get off the beaten track. Skiers will be delighted to find out about Seli, Vasilitsa, Kaimaktsalan and Tria Pente Pigadia ski centres.

Kastoria lake in Macedonia Greece

A unique place in Macedonia is Mt Athos , a peninsula full of monasteries. Mt Athos can be visited only by men, and you need to plan and reserve your visit well in advance.

Macedonia is a great destination if you want to visit Greece beyond the beaten track. You will love it if you have a special interest in Roman and Byzantine history.

Thrace – The unknown Greece

The small area of Thrace in Greece is unknown not only to visitors, but also to many Athenians and other people who live in south Greece. In fact, the name Thrace refers to a larger geographical area, shared by Greece, Bulgaria and Turkey.

If you visit Thrace, you will be surprised with the different traditions and cultures, that you won’t see anywhere else in Greece.

Old town of Xanthi Thrace Greece

By Serge Traveler – Own work , CC BY-SA 4.0 , Link

Thrace is home to large Muslim populations, as well as to people of Greek and Pontian origin, who moved here with the collapse of the Soviet Union, in the early 1990s. There are also other minorities, such as the Pomakoi. All these people speak a number of different dialects and have their own local customs.

Thrace is an area full of beautiful nature , forests, mountains, and off-the-beaten-track hiking paths. If you decide to visit the unknown Thrace, rent a car and drive to Nestos river, lake Vistonida, a Natura 2000 area, and Delta Evrou.

You will discover quite unique ecosystems and rare animals and birds. Did you know that Greece has flamingoes, wildcats and jackals?

The small, picturesque towns, Xanthi , Komotini and Alexandroupoli , are simply enchanting. Wander around the tiny cobbled streets, and explore the interesting architecture, a mix of Balkan and neoclassical styles.

Thrace is an ideal destination if you want to visit the unexplored Greece . It’s a unique place where you will feel that time has stopped – and you may even feel you are in a different continent.

What is there to do on the Greek Islands

Visitors often refer to “ the Greek islands ” as if they were a small group of islands close to each other. It couldn’t be further from the truth!

The Greek islands are three large groups of islands split into several smaller subgroups. Every group of islands has its own character. I bet that each of your friends who has been to Greece will have their own favourite.

Korthi beach Andros Greece

Arguably the most famous group of islands in Greece are the Cyclades . This is the group to the east of mainland Greece, which includes Santorini , Mykonos , Milos , Naxos , and about 20 other major islands.

While the majority of the Cyclades are rocky and dry, the Ionians and the Sporades are more fertile and green.

Island vs mainland Greece - Ithaca

Naturally, most of the islands are great for swimming and spending time on the beach. That said, Santorini doesn’t have the best beaches in the Cyclades.

Red beach in Santorini - Should I visit mainland Greece, or the islands?

If you are visiting in summer, I strongly suggest combining Santorini with at least another island. If you are mostly after beaches, I strongly recommend Milos, Naxos and Lefkada in the Ionian side.

Some islands, like Mykonos , Zakynthos or Ios are known for their nightlife. Others, like Tinos , Corfu or Chios are known for their picturesque towns and villages.

Many of them have some ancient ruins, with Delos island being the most famous one.

 Delos island Greece

Architecture, landscapes and regional dishes vary a lot from each island to the next, even among islands that belong to the same group.

The biggest Greek island – Crete

An island that is beyond any comparison is Crete . It combines everything a visitor might be after when taking a holiday in Greece.

If you are going to this big island, try to allow two weeks at a minimum. Otherwise, just concentrate on a single area, as Crete has lots to do.

Balos beach in Crete - Should I visit mainland Greece or the islands

My best advice is to spend some time exploring the main cities. Chania should definitely be on your itinerary, though you should be prepared for large crowds coming out of cruise boats if you visit in summer.

It’s a charming coastal town, and you can easily spend a few days here.

Should I visit mainland Greece or the islands - Chania Crete

Even though many people will try to put you off Heraklion , I completely disagree.  Heraklion combines the city feeling with life on an island, and it’s a lively place all year round. Furthermore, it has one of the best archaeological museums in Greece.

Archaeological site of Knossos in Crete

Rent a car and explore the amazing beaches, the fascinating ancient sites of Knossos , Festos and Gortyna , the mountain villages and the delicious, authentic Cretan culinary tradition. There is just one minor problem – Crete will set your expectations very, very high!

Greece mainland vs the islands

As you can see from all the above, choosing where to go in Greece isn’t exactly an easy choice. There are beautiful places all around the country, and every region has its own charm.

If you are a first time visitor and you really want to tick off the most important tourist attractions, your best bet is to combine some of the mainland with the islands.

Visit Athens, Delphi, Meteora and Santorini, and see if you have time for another island or two. This will give you an idea of Greece’s diversity, and chances are that you will start planning your next trip straightaway!

Archaeological site of Delphi Greece

If you are happy to drive, you can take a road trip through the Peloponnese. This is one of the easiest areas to explore, as it’s close to Athens, and there are plenty of routes you can take to cover one, two or more weeks .

If you prefer smaller, more compact places and are keen on exploring many beaches, you can choose to visit some of the islands. Island hopping used to be very popular back in the 80s, and is now a lot easier due to the fast ferries .

The easiest islands to hop around are the Cyclades and the Dodecanese – though if you only have a few days I don’t recommend you visit more than two or three islands.

A beach in Tinos island Greece

All in all, every visitor will find their own favourite places to visit in Greece. Even though the islands are charming, the mainland can also be quite fascinating, partly because some parts are not easily visited.

There are absolutely no areas of Greece where I wouldn’t like to go back. And I still haven’t been to all of them!

Frequently asked questions about the Greek island vs the mainland

Here are some questions I often get from people visiting Greece:

Which part of Greece should I visit?

Greece is an extremely diverse country in terms of landscapes, architecture and culture. Every part of Greece is worth visiting. First-time visitors often choose the best known destinations, like Athens, Santorini, Delphi and Meteora.

Where should I stay in Greece mainland?

Some of the most common places to visit in mainland Greece are Athens, Meteora, Delphi, Ioannina and Thessaloniki. In addition, Peloponnese has popular areas like Nafplio, Gythio, Monemvasia, Kalamata and Mani.

How many days do you need in Greek Islands?

Greece has over 100 inhabited islands, and a few thousand uninhabited ones. It would take you years to explore all of them properly! If, like many visitors, you have ten days on the Greek islands, you could visit two or three of them.

What is the nicest Greek island?

Ask ten people, and you are likely to get ten different answers. Islands that visitors rate highly include Santorini, Mykonos, Naxos, Paros, Crete, Rhodes, Kos, Kefalonia, Corfu, Zakynthos, Skiathos, Samos, Thassos, and many more.

Which is the prettiest and quietest Greek island?

There are many Greek islands that would fit this description, and they are all pretty remote. Some of them include Iraklia, Schinoussa, Donousa, Sikinos, Anafi, Tilos, Symi, Chalki, Agathonisi, Kastellorizo, Ithaca, Kythira and Alonissos.

Your opinion – Greek islands, or mainland Greece?

Have you been to Greece? Do you have a favourite region where you’d go back in a heartbeat? Let me know in the comments!

15 Best Cities to Visit in Greece

' src=

Bathed in glorious sunshine, visiting Greece is always a treat and every year thousands upon thousands of visitors flock to its shores to revel in all that it has to offer.

Besides the iconic Athens with its plethora of incredible historical sites, Greece has a delightful array of cities with some nestled among rocky hills with others overlooking the beautiful waters that surround the country. With so many islands to explore, many of the best cities in Greece are located in stunning settings that are awe-inspiring to behold.

15. Piraeus

Piraeus

Lying just ten kilometers from the center of Athens, Piraeus is the ancient port of the capital although it is now considered a separate entity. An ugly place for the most part, it is only the smaller harbors of Zea Marina Mikrolimano which are actually worth visiting.

The main reason though that people visit Piraeus is because it is the largest port in the Mediterranean and is the gateway to Greece’s innumerable islands. In no time at all you’ll find yourself on a beautiful Greek island , far removed from the sprawl of Piraeus.

14. Larissa

Larissa

Located on the banks of the Pinios River, Larissa is one of the oldest sites in Greece and has been occupied for around eight thousand years! Consequently, it has a number of delightful archaeological sites with Byzantine and Ottoman ruins scattered about the place.

The ancient theater is impressive to behold and the remains of a Neolithic acropolis are also worth a visit. Now a university town, it is a pleasant enough place to spend some time without setting the world alight.

13. Ioannina

Ioannina

With its beautiful location on the shore of Lake Pamvotis, Ioannina’s setting coupled with its delightful old town make it a great place to stop by. While much of it is indistinguishable from any other city around the world, the old part with its minarets, fortress and ancient walls is atmospheric to wander around.

It is lively to visit due to its large student body and there are a number of great day-trips to be had in Ioannina’s surroundings. Take a trip for instance to the monasteries on Nissi Island or the amazing caves of Perama.

12. Kalambaka

Kalambaka

While this small city is primarily visited for its incredible setting beneath the astounding Meteora pinnacles, Kalambaka itself is a pleasant if quiet place to stop by. There is a nice tenth century church to visit as well as some good restaurants and cafes.

The Meteora, however, is the main attraction and it houses twenty-four monasteries perched atop of its rocky peaks. The scenery of the area is mesmerising and small waterfalls and old bridges as well as caves and hiking trails dot this incredible landscape.

11. Kalamata

Kalamata

Located on the shores of the beautiful Messinian Bay with the domineering Mount Taygetos behind it, Kalamata’s idyllic setting makes it a lovely place to wile away some time. The capital city of Messenia has a large cathedral and a picturesque old town for visitors to enjoy as well as a fort and some nice museums. Most people who visit simply use it as a base from which to visit other sites in Messenia.

10. Corfu Town

Corfu Town

One of the most elegant cities to visit in the whole of Greece, Corfu Town’s historic center is absolutely gorgeous. The lovely Venetian architecture and plethora of ancient churches makes its narrow streets delightful to explore and its two hillforts only add to the picturesque scene. As the main port of entry to the island, the town can get very busy although this does mean that there are lots of restaurants and bars for visitors to enjoy.

Kavala

Located in the north of Greece, Kavala has a lovely historic center, some fantastic beaches and a wealth of archaeological sites for visitors to revel in. Its picturesque setting next to pristine turquoise waters coupled with the ancient citadel and attractive Ottoman aqueduct that runs above the roofs of the houses makes Kavala a pleasant place to be. Most visitors use it as a gateway to the nearby Aegean Islands.

8. Rethymno

Rethymno

With the beautiful blue waters that line the waterfront and its fine beaches, Rethymno is one of the best places to visit in Crete . Its combination of Venetian, Roman and Ottoman architecture is intoxicating and is what makes wandering around the old town so magical.

With a healthy student population, it’s a surprisingly lively town with a lot of decent restaurants. The highlight of Rethymno is the Venetian fortress that looks out over the town from the west.

Patras

One of the busiest ports in Greece, first appearances dictate that Patras is best viewed from a ferry departing its harbor due to the grimy feel about the place. Dig a little deeper, however, and you’ll find some attractive and lively parts to it with the impressive castle particularly worth checking out.

There’s a nice old church and cathedral to boot and one of the most amazing sights is the modern suspension bridge that stretches out across the water. From here you can take a ferry to any of the Ionian Islands.

6. Rhodes Town

Rhodes Town

The capital city of the island, Rhodes Town dates back to the fifth century BC and as such has a plethora of historical sites to visit, all hidden away amidst the labyrinth of alleys that make up the Old Town. Ringed in by the ancient walls, this part of Rhodes Town is simply heavenly to explore and at night it is beautifully illuminated.

A world away from here is the new part of town which has shops, bars and restaurants as well as the best beach in the vicinity. Once the site of the Colossus – one of the ancient wonders of the world – Rhodes can get very busy but it is definitely worth visiting.

5. Heraklion

Heraklion

The capital city of Crete is a bustling slightly chaotic place, full of life that will slowly grow on you if you give it the chance. The main body of attractions lie in the walled-part of the city and the old town is lovely to explore. With a great fortress jutting out into the harbor and a lively waterfront, Heraklion is the perfect place from which to visit the rest of Crete.

The Palace of Knossos is also worth stopping by and there are lots of interesting museums that will catch your attention. While the modern part of the city is quite unattractive and hectic, there is some nice shopping and restaurants to be found.

Nafplio

Formerly the capital of modern Greece, Nafplio’s lovely setting and delightful architecture makes it one of the most beautiful cities in Greece. It is a popular place to visit among tourists and Athenians alike so its historic streets and picturesque harbor front can get crowded at times.

Located in a strategic spot, there are three fortresses dotted around its margins and history lovers will enjoy visiting them as well as the panoramic views that they offer out over the sea and hills. Its decaying grandeur and stunning Venetian and Ottoman architecture make Nafplio an atmospheric city to visit.

Chania

Located on the coastline of Crete, Chania is a picturesque and charming place to visit and you’ll immediately fall in love with the feel of it. Its quaint old town is dripping with charisma as Turkish and Venetian architecture lines its twisting narrow streets and tiny cafes pop up here and there.

A short walk away you will find the old port with its distinctive lighthouse that only adds to the beauty of Chania. It’s an authentic place that highlights the real Cretan way of life. From here you can explore nearby parts of the island with Samaria Gorge being a particularly great day-trip.

2. Thessaloniki

Thessaloniki

The cultural capital of Greece, Thessaloniki is the second largest city and has a vibrant cultural scene with lots of festivals and events taking place over the year. Lying on the Gulf of Thessaloniki, it is a cosmopolitan place with over three thousand years of history and consequently there are some lovely Roman ruins to see as well as some old Ottoman buildings and fantastic Byzantine churches.

Walking along the picturesque waterfront is delightful with the highlight being the 15th century White Tower which looks out over the sea. With its bustling nightlife, animated music scene and delicious local cuisine; there is something for everyone in Thessaloniki. The city hums with life thanks to its large student body and that is why there is such a multicultural and energetic vibe about the place.

Athens

Dripping in history, Athens has a wealth of historic sites for visitors to enjoy and the crown jewel is obviously the stunning Acropolis which towers so impressively above the city. While you will inevitably come across ancient monuments, buildings and ruins dating back over two millennia, the city is not particularly attractive as rampant modernization means that they are all too often sandwiched between new developments.

Some areas though have retained their charm with the neighborhoods of Plaka and Monastiraki being particularly pretty. Home to nearly half of Greece’s population, the capital is a lively place to visit with lots of fantastic restaurants and atmospheric cafes and bars.

On top of its nightlife, there are some great museums on offer and once you’ve had your fill of the stunning historical sites that litter the city you can head to nearby Piraeus and take a boat to any of Greece’s fantastic islands.

How many Greek islands can I see in a week?

Helen Iatrou

It's not hard to visit two or three Greek islands like Little Venice in Mykonos in one week © Cosmin Voinea / 500px

Helen Iatrou, who considers herself a full-blooded Greek islander shares some ideas for planning an island-hopping trip.

Question: I’m planning a vacation to the Greek islands this summer but don’t know where to start. Which islands should I visit, and how many can I fit into a week-long trip?

Helen Iatrou:  Sailing is my great passion, which makes the islands my literal playground . I prefer to take my time to get to know one island at a time, usually over one week. You’d be surprised how much there is to see, even on the tiniest specks.

With dozens of islands in Greece to choose from, it’s a tough decision – trust me, I know. Every year I wrack my brain and spend hours researching my next island adventure. I’ve lost count of the number of times my husband has asked, “Why did you book that island?!” But every single time we return, we always bask in that glow of having explored somewhere new and intriguing.

Tourists on the ferry boat arriving to Corfu, Greece.

How to travel around the Greek islands

While ferries are still the main mode of transport between the islands, these days it’s much quicker and easier to reach them via air. While not all of them have airports, you can usually fly into one of the larger islands with domestic carriers such as Aegean Airlines (check their handy low-fare calendar), Olympic Air , or Sky Express and take a short ferry to smaller isles nearby. If you do travel via ferry from port hubs  Piraeus or Rafina, choose the fast ferry options, which cost a little more but get you there faster. Ferryhopper is one of the best booking platforms, as you can map out your full inter-island journey.

My favorite mode of travel is (you guessed it) by sailboat. If you charter a yacht with a skipper, you can hop between islands at your pace – unless you or your companions possess a skipper’s license and have sufficient experience to captain your craft yourselves.

Planning your island-hopping getaway

May to October is prime time for the Greek islands , particularly if you want to soak up all the sunshine and swim in the glorious Aegean. Keep in mind that June through August can be hectic, particularly on the most popular islands, and flights and accommodation are at their most expensive, too. And who wants to wait hours for that restaurant table?

Start by thinking about what interests you and what you’re looking for. Beaches with all the amenities or hidden rocky coves? High-end restaurants or toes-in-the-sand tavernas? Ancient sites or late-night bars? Do you want to chill on one or two islands and see as much of them as you can? Or would you prefer to see multiple islands?

I suggest taming your ambitions, and focusing on one island group, visiting no more than two to three islands in total. If you’re sailing, you can certainly drop anchor at a different island each day.

People are on vacation at Koukounaries beach, Skiathos Island.

Take your pick of Greek island jewels

Most first-timers choose the Cyclades , homing in on Santorini for its cliffs dripping with whitewashed cubic buildings, and Mykonos for its charismatic appeal. Once you’ve had your fill of Mykonos, take the ferry to nearby Tinos . This low-key island has quietly earned itself a reputation for exceptional farm-to-fork fare, hiking trails and boutique wineries.

If you’ve got kids in tow, you might prefer to fly or ferry your way to Naxos , where kids can safely swim in shallow waters amid golden sands or learn to windsurf. From there, couples desperately seeking serenity and umbrella-free beaches can board the hardy Express Skopelitis for the Small Cyclades isles of Schinoussa, Donousa, Iraklia or Koufonisia.

If verdant hillsides, turquoise seas and stark white pebble beaches sound dreamy, the Ionian Islands beckon. Fly into Corfu , where you can cool off at sandy beaches and stroll the emerald isle’s romantic, cobblestoned capital. From there, take a hydrofoil to the twin isles of Paxi (or Paxos), whose unpruned olive trees deliver delicately flavored olive oil. From Paxos, hire a motorboat and scoot over to Antipaxos to dive into translucent aquamarine waters.

Tourists at night in the historic town center of Rhodes, Dodecanese, Greece

Down south in the Dodecanese , fewer travelers venture beyond Rhodes and its medieval old town, where you can envision knights thundering down flagstoned alleyways and wander through the seaside village of Lindos. Yet a short flight away is remote Karpathos . In hillside Olympos, women still don lavish traditional costumes for special occasions and celebrate with all-night panegyria (feast days).

Mapping out a Greek-island getaway might seem daunting, poor travelers – but rest assured that whichever destinations you decide on, you’re guaranteed to return home with memories that will remain in your mind for years to come.

Thessaloniki

Thessaloniki, located in the northern part of the country, offers a blend of history and youthful energy that few cities can match. “I would recommend Thessaloniki for its long and epic history,” Peter Sommer, founder of Peter Sommer Travels , shared. “The historic centre of Thessaloniki is filled with an extraordinary series of ancient monuments, many of them part of an imperial palace complex built by the Roman Emperor Galerius and vast in scope.”

Sommer added that there are several museums to visit here, including the Museum of Byzantine Culture and the Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki. “But history and archaeology aren’t the only reasons to come to Thessaloniki. It’s justly famed for its gastronomy,” Sommer added. “You can savour a huge selection of glorious local dishes and sample a cornucopia of excellent local wines .”

5 Safest Cities In Greece

Greece

When considering a holiday destination, Greece is one most sought, if not for the incredible architecture alone and the history that it reveals.

The country is like any region of the world, whether visiting or a resident, with specific locations where an air of caution adds to safety.

According to statistics, property crime in the country is moderate, with a range of 53.67 in relation to vandalism or theft.

It is low for violent personal property damage relating to assaults or robbery at 39.66.

As a rule, overall crime rates remain low when compared to other countries.

Tourists are less of a focus for criminals than locals, except in cases of muggings and pickpocketing.

Still, these are less prevalent than instances of fraud and scams for which holiday travelers would need to stay alert to ensure they don’t become a victim.

Thessaloniki

And 5. santorini and mykonos, natural disasters, final thought, greece safety overview, what should be avoided in greece, what’s the most dangerous place to visit in greece, is greece considered violent.

Greece boasts among the safest holiday destinations and the most favored for travelers around the world.

The locals are exceptionally welcoming and friendly, with many speaking multiple languages.

That gives visitors an added safety layer if there’s a need to communicate, whether lost or in an emergency situation.

It’s also beneficial since authorities will usually have an English-speaking member on their team capable of assisting a tourist in distress.

Pickpocketing is the primary concern for tourists, an issue seen typically in urban areas, especially hectic “transit hubs.”

The idea is to pay attention, secure belongings, and never leave a drink unattended.

Which locations are suggested safe spots for travelers?

Consider these suggestions.

Athens, Greece

Athens offers the eager traveler much to see and do.

The capital produces breathtaking views, an array of delightful cuisine, magnificent beaches, historic architecture, and bountiful entertainment.

While visitors are generally safe from criminal activity except for the potential for pickpocketing or scams, it’s still wise to be mindful of the atmosphere and steer clear of neighborhoods where organized crime is viewed as a problem and shopping plazas where scams and fraud are prevalent.

Syros, Greece

Within Syros is a suggested town a traveler will want to set their sights on known as Ermoupoli.

The area is somewhat a home away from home, not in the hub of what a tourist typically seeks on a sightseeing excursion.

It sets you up to envision the day-to-day of Grecian life. Its roots lie in the Greek Revolution Era.

Still, visitors will find fantastic hidden beaches, a “hopping” marina, and a breathtaking church surrounded by historic merchant mansions.

Safety in Syros is the expectation given the almost isolated situation.

Thessaloniki, Greece

The city is among the more prominent destinations in Greece, with roughly 100,000 citizens.

The architecture throughout is a tourist attraction, as are the delicious food and the art districts.

There is an abundance of things to see and do, so much so that it’s challenging to do it all in one trip.

For its size, the presumption would be that holiday travelers must be especially cautious.

Still, the suggestion is that Thessaloniki has an incredibly low crime rate for the country as a whole.

When following basic precautions, visitors should enjoy a pleasant time in this safe city.

Santorini, Greece

Tying for two of the most pleasant islands for tourists to feel safe visiting are Santorini and Mykonos off the Aegean Sea.

Again, architecture is a primary reason most travelers seek out Greece as a primary holiday destination because it is genuinely magnificent, and that’s true on these islands as well.

The beaches themselves provide a backdrop to stunning crystal blue water.

When situated in this tranquil ambiance, the last notion is to sense danger or a threat to safety.

Greece is probably one of the safest places to visit, with its capital, a primary attraction, being deemed at the top of the safest cities worldwide per “crowdsourced data and official statistics.”

Visiting the country poses a very low safety risk to the holiday traveler, particularly when tourists pay attention to their surroundings which would be anticipated when traveling anywhere in the world.

Plus, stay in groups and keep nighttime outings within limits.

5 Safety Tips When Traveling To Greece

Greece boasts as a genuinely safe and overall wonderful country with an abundance to offer holiday travelers.

The priority is to take all the necessary precautions to avoid being put in dangerous situations which are not always based on criminal activity but can involve other situations.

Consider these tips when visiting.

When possible, leave valuables at home.

Otherwise, these things should remain at the hotel in a safe location.

That also means taking photocopies of IDs, passports, and vital documents to carry with you and leaving the originals at the lodging.

Personal property damage like robbery or assault rarely happens in Greece.

A suggestion is to travel with a group, never walk away from a beverage to avoid it being spiked, and not drink too much to detract from alertness.

Rallies and demonstrations are a common occurrence in the country, particularly in Athens’ primary squares.

The suggestion for tourists is to follow the media in the surrounding area to ensure the protests are not becoming violent.

The authorities in the country will use all necessary means to break up the demonstrations.

That will include tear gas to disperse a crowd getting out of control.

In these situations, travel plans could be disrupted regardless of the mode of transportation, making it necessary to pay close attention to the reports.

Among the primary safety concerns in Greece are road conditions.

These present the most danger even compared to criminal activity, with traffic deaths higher than the average for other countries in Europe.

As a pedestrian, it’s vital to hesitate before crossing in front of a driver.

The standards are poor, and the motorists are exceptionally aggressive.

As an unfamiliar driver, the road conditions will appear to be in need of repair.

Plus, there are often livestock seen roaming in various locations.

The country is situated in an “active seismic zone.”

That means there are regular volcanic eruptions and earthquakes.

Because the summers are exceptionally arid, running from June until September, the country experiences great wildfires.

Greece is at risk for flooding conditions in the winter and again in the spring seasons.

A priority as a visitor is to follow the emergency guidelines in the surrounding area, listen to the media in the vicinity, and speak with the consulate or local embassy for updates when concerned for safety.

Illicit drugs are not a problem travelers should have to contend with in any area of Greece, except perhaps the organized crime areas.

The country has exceptionally stringent regulations, more so than are seen in most of Europe against these, and authorities enforce these laws to the fullest extent.

No one should participate in a drug-related activity or attempt to engage in such behavior while in the country.

If traveling with prescription medication, it’s vital to ensure the drugs are in the appropriate bottles with the labels supplied by the pharmacy with the prescribing doctor’s information.

You’ll want to bring plenty of your medicine to avoid the potential for running out since pharmacies have occasionally seen shortages of supplies.

Many people worldwide choose Greece as their holiday destination primarily for the ancient architecture and associated history.

The country has a reputation for being among the safest places to visit.

Still, as with any trip, tourists would take the necessary precautions to avoid being victims of scams or pickpocketing, as is common anywhere.

Plus, travelers must research what constitutes a bad neighborhood and avoid those.

All in all, don’t focus on crime and becoming a victim to the point of paranoia.

Relax and enjoy a good time with reasonable precautions.

Greece will be a good time, and you’ll be in safe hands.

Frequently Asked Questions

As a holiday traveler, it is wise to either avoid the Athens public plazas in the evening or go in a group.

It’s further cautious when going with a group to have one person paying attention to suspicious activity to avoid the potential for pickpocketing or thefts.

Another precautionary measure would be staying away from Glyfada square in Athens.

Choosing another area for entertainment is recommended since this spot is associated with the country’s organized crime syndicates.

An area rife with violent crimes would be the one to avoid in Greece.

These usually involve organized crime rings battling with rivals.

Holiday travelers would not find themselves facing violent crime unless they entered a dangerous area like Glyfada or Syntagma.

Unless unavoidable, these areas should not be included in a tourist’s itinerary.

If you’re lost, reach out to authorities for assistance.

Greece is among the safest holiday destinations since it is part of the EU.

As with any country, travelers should heed the side of caution by researching to learn where the “hotspots” for crime syndicates are, where theft is prevalent or political arenas where demonstrations are routine.

I think maybe you meant to say omonia and sintagma as dangerous areas or may be monastiraki but Glyfada is one of the safest areas in all of Athens.

Greece’s more than 6000 islands, 15,000 kilometers of pristine coastline, and centuries-old archaeological sites will leave you in awe. Even better, Greece boasts a more relaxing atmosphere, better beaches, and cheaper food and hotel prices than many of its European counterparts.

11 Things To Do in Greece

The picturesque country of Greece is brimming with idyllic islands, Ancient Greek mythology, a traditional culinary scene, historic ruins, and a rich philosophical past.

A journey to this fascinating country is a bucket list destination for many travelers with its fluorescent blue seas, striking architecture, mountainous landscape, and breathtaking coastal towns.

From lively mainland cities to quaint and colorful villages by the sea, Greece is a colorful mosaic of picture-perfect beaches, towering temples, and surprises at every winding coastal road and mountain peak. One thing is sure: you won’t be able to visit just once!

Continue reading below to learn more about the best things to do during a Greece vacation:

1. The Acropolis

It’s not a trip to Greece without visiting The Acropolis of Athens . Seeing this historical site is one of the most significant contributors to why Greece is worth visiting. Once a mighty citadel atop the city’s highest hill, it now stands in beautiful ruin as one of the most iconic landmarks in the world.

Greece is worth visiting if you are looking to explore beautiful views and learn about rich history.

Built for the Greek goddess Athena 3,300 years ago, the Acropolis includes the Parthenon religious temple, the temple of Athena Nike, and other notable structures. Mainly built for defense, the Acropolis was heavily damaged in 1687 by a Venetian cannonball.

To reach the ruins, you can climb all 250 steps in 20 minutes or take a one-minute inclined elevator ride.

➡️ See the Acropolis on an Acropolis of Athens Afternoon Walking Tour !

2. The Meteora Monasteries

If you’re up for an adventure, hiking to the Meteora Monasteries is a great outdoor activity. The 16 kilometers (10 miles) of walking trails lead to all six monasteries. The hikes are rated moderately complex and can be taken with a professional tour company or at your own pace with your own transportation.

A trip to the Meteora monasteries is a must! This destination is full of captivating views and rich history.

Once at the monasteries, you can explore the interior and grounds for a small fee. Pack plenty of water, snacks, and appropriate clothing inside the monasteries. It’s essential also to note that at least one monastery will be closed on any given day of the week, so plan your itinerary in advance.

I recommend this tour to see all six monasteries! ➡️ Panoramic Meteora and all Monasteries Tour

3. Santorini’s Stunning Caldera

To this day, one of the most recognizable landmarks in Greece is the site of the largest volcanic eruption ever recorded: The Santorini Caldera.

The caldera itself is outlined by the Santorini, Aspronisi, and Thirasia islands, with the two small islands of Palea and Nea Kameni in the center.

The sunsets behind the Santorini caldera are one of the best views in Greece

It’s the only inhabited caldera in the entire world! Made up entirely of frozen lava, it remains one of the most intriguing natural formations in the world. While Santorini may be an expensive island , you must see a sunset from the caldera!

It is a must-see if you are visiting Santorini. The stunning backdrops, such as the famous flying dress, are perfect for photoshoots !

An activity like an ATV tour is an excellent way to view the stunning views from the caldera and reach hidden gem viewpoints.

➡️Check out this excellent Catamaran Cruise for a unique experience around the Caldera.

Milos’s Unique Beaches

With over 75 unique and secluded beaches, Milos is heaven on earth for those who love exploring the sandy coastline. Although they are all beautiful, some of the most striking and unique of Milos’s beaches include Sarakiniko, Tsigrado, and Kleftiko.

Kleftiko is one of the most gorgeous beaches on Milos island.

Sarakiniko is the most famous and most photographed beach. A stream of deep blue water goes through a surrounding landscape of white volcanic rocks for an otherworldly view. Tsigrado Beach is just as stunning but even more unique, secluded, and dangerous.

The water is incredibly clear at Kleftiko, with sandy volcanic rock formations. In addition to being beautiful, many of Milos’s beaches are also perfect for cliff diving and swimming.

➡️I booked this Milos Catamaran Tour that visited Kleftiko and had an AMAZING time!

5. The Underrated Corfu Island

If you want to experience a more off-the-beaten-path Greece vacation, don’t pass up the island of Corfu . Known for its impressive nature reserves and unique bird-spotting opportunities, endless ways exist to escape the tourist crowds and delve into the island’s rich landscape.

Corfu has many activities and is well worth visiting in Greece. There’s something for anyone to enjoy on this Ionian island.

Stunning islands such as Corfu are one of the many reasons why Greece is worth visiting!

In fact, the coastline is brimming with sandy beaches and secret coves, stunning mountain scenery, and ancient fortresses. Plan to spend at least a few days there, and don’t pass up exploring The Achilleion Palace, Porto Timoni Beach, or the town of Kassiopi.

6. Delicious Greek Cuisine

There are endless reasons why Greek cuisine is so famous. From the healthy aspect to its ingredient variety, vibrant taste, and visual appeal, the “Mediterranean diet” has exploded in popularity worldwide in recent years.

Greece is definitely worth visiting for foodies! Greek cuisine is full of delicious dishes.

One of the reasons for this is Greece’s close proximity to the Mediterranean Sea. Nutrient-rich soil to grow fruit and vegetables and the freshest caught seafood creates a culture of unprocessed foods.

7. Incredible Hospitality

Southern hospitality in the United States might be sweet as pie, but the tradition of hospitality in Greece is on another level. A deeply-rooted characteristic of Ancient Greek culture, Greek people remain some of the most welcoming people in the entire world.

As a matter of fact, the Ancient Greek God, Zeus Xenios, was known as the “protector of travelers.” Greek mythology deeply instilled the law of xenia, or the promise to offer protection and hospitality to strangers. It is still upheld to this day.

8. Island Hopping

One of the best reasons Greece is worth visiting is the convenience of island hopping by ferry . With 227 inhabited islands throughout the Mediterranean, it’s virtually impossible to see them all in one trip. However, you sure can make an effort!

One of the fishing villages in Milos.

Most people try to visit at least two in one trip, spending a total of two-to-three nights on each island. One of the most popular routes for island hopping includes a seven-day itinerary beginning in Athens with stops in Mykonos and Santorini. Add a couple of stops in either Naxos, Paros , or Crete for a longer two-week journey.

Best Way to Visit Greece Islands

Island hopping is one of the best things to do in Greece. Many would consider visiting Greece a crime and not exploring at least one or two. With 227 inhabited islands, you’ll definitely have plenty to choose from!

Traveling by ferry is the most affordable and scenic way to island hop. The travel time between most islands is as short as 45 minutes on a faster ferry or as long as an overnight sail from Athens on a slower ferry.

Tickets to the ferry must be bought at least 24 hours before departure and typically range in price from 4 euros to nearly 100 euros per person. Check websites such as Ferryhopper for up-to-date routes, sail times, and prices.

9. The Lively Greek Nightlife

When you think of partying and nightlife in Greece, you most likely think of the lively island of Mykonos. Mykonos has dozens of clubs and bars, including VOID and Paradise Beach Club. These are considered two of the best nightclubs in Greece. In fact, many world-famous DJs have performed at them in recent years.

However, Mykonos isn’t the only Greek island that knows how to have a good time. Corfu and Santorini nightlife give Mykonos a run for its money with miles of coastline brimming with exciting venues (think dancing on tables on a moonlight beach until the early morning).

10. The Many UNESCO World Heritage Sites

Currently, Greece is home to 24 designated UNESCO World Heritage Sites. 22 of these are cultural sites, and two (Meteora and Mount Athos) are listed for natural and cultural significance. While this is shy of neighboring Italy’s 58 UNESCO Sites, Greece still packs a cultural punch.

The Acropolis is one of the most visited sites in Greece!

The Parthenon (within the Acropolis of Athens) is perhaps the most notable of the 28 total sites, but all are significant and beautiful in their own way.

Other sites popular with locals and tourists include the Archaeological Site of Olympia, the Greek islands of Delos and Rhodes, and the archaeological ruins complex of Hadrian’s Villa.

11. Archaeological Sites

While every historical location in Greece isn’t a UNESCO site, many other significant archaeological sites are spread across the mainland and the islands. This offers to chance to learn more about Greece and it’s prominent history.

Of the many sites to see in Athens, the Roman Agora should be visited! It’s a historical site that was a meeting place for various activities in ancient Greece. Today, you can view its ruins and still see the best-preserved structures, such as the Gate of Athena.

What is Greece Known For?

Greece is indeed known the world over for its vast collection of islands. It is also known for the infamous ancient ruins and Greek columns of the Acropolis of Athens. While these sights deserve a spot at the top of the list, there is so much more to Greece than meets the eye.

It was home to brilliant, history-altering philosophers, including Plato, Pythagoras, Socrates, and Aristotle. Greece was also the birthplace of the Olympic Games, the art of theater, and democracy in the West.

If you’re a foodie, don’t pass up the cuisines that Greece is most famous for, including baked moussaka ( eggplant casserole ), souvlaki ( grilled meats in pita ), gyros, and fasolada ( bean soup ). Each dish has great cultural significance to Greece and is prepared differently depending on the region and island.

When is the Best Time to Visit Greece?

There’s really no “bad” time to visit Greece, but the answer to this ultimately depends on the type of traveler you are and the kinds of experiences you want to have on your vacation.

If you want to beat the summer crowds and unlock the best hotel deals, visit in early spring or mid-fall. April and September bring lower temperatures, less rain, and warm sea temperatures, perfect for swimming.

In September, the main tourist attractions remain open, with fewer school and tour crowds, and the wine flows freely since its vine harvesting season. Cheers!

What is the Weather in Greece Like?

Like many other parts of the world, Greece experiences all four seasons. Due to its mild Mediterranean climate, most of Greece experiences long, dry summers. However, it’s not uncommon for the mountainous region of the mainland to experience light snowfall.

Island hopping is one of the best parts about Greece. It allows you to easily see multiple destinations during your trip.

July is the hottest month in Greece , with an average daily high temperature of 33 Celsius (91 Fahrenheit) and an average daily low of 17 Celsius (63 Fahrenheit).

On the other end, the coldest month is January , with an average daily high of 13 Celsius (55 Fahrenheit) and an average daily low of 5 Celsius (42 Fahrenheit). This is one of the best months to see snowfall in the country’s northern regions.

In the north, annual rainfall can range from 20 to 48 inches. In the south, total rainfall varies from 15 to 32 inches annually. Even in light of the rain, Greece still sees more than 250 sunny days yearly.

Does Greece Get A Lot of Tourists?

For decades, Greece has been one of the most popular vacation destinations in the world. In fact, tourism is Greece’s largest industry, employing nearly 900,000 people and accounting for nearly 25 percent of the country’s GDP.

The country welcomes more than 34 million tourists annually, many choosing to visit Santorini, Rhodes, Crete, Mykonos, and Corfu. The tourist season in Greece runs from early April to mid-October, with the highest concentration of tourists arriving during the summer months.

If you are seeking a less touristy island to visit during your time, you can consider going to Syros , Tinos, or Paxos. These islands also will provide a terrific Greek experience.

How Many Days Do You Need in Greece?

The answer to this ultimately depends on several factors, including your budget and how many places within Greece you want to experience.

Spending three to five days in Greece is possible if you are short on time. However, you would likely only be able to fit in one day in Athens and one nearby island.

That said, 11 to 15 days is the “sweet spot.” This allows three days in Athens, a day trip to a location like Meteora, and a few nights each on two to three islands.

Getting Around Greece

Many modes of transportation in Greece make exploring both the mainland and the islands accessible. The country has many options, from planes, buses, Ubers, and ferries.

The fastest way to travel throughout the country is, of course, by plane. Greece is home to 46 international and domestic airports, the most significant being Athens International Airport (ATH). The Athens airport receives the most flights from abroad and offers the most routes to the islands.

ATV tours are a great and fun way to explore Greek islands!

A more scenic and affordable way to explore the islands is by ferry. Depending on the season and route, ferry tickets can cost as little as 4 euros up to 100 euros. It’s one of the best things to do in Greece!

The public bus system is also modern, affordable, and comfortable. The buses offer routes to most communities except for sparsely populated towns. In select cities and islands, Uber is also available . However, reserving one is highly complicated and expensive, so it’s best to stick to public transportation where possible.

For the most flexibility, you can rent a car. Be mindful that locals can drive more aggressively than how you may be used to. Given that, make sure that you are very vigilant while driving.

🚗 Book your rental car through  Discover Cars! (This is the company I use)

Is Greece Safe?

The short answer is yes! Greece is very safe for travelers of any nationality. In fact, Greece is one of the safest European Union countries to visit in 2023, according to risk monitoring apps.

As is the case with any destination, it’s essential to be aware of your surroundings near tourist attractions or in large crowds. While levels of violent crime are relatively low, tourists can still fall victim to petty crimes like pickpocketing or bag snatching. Remain vigilant, don’t draw unnecessary attention to yourself, and don’t walk alone late at night.

Overall, if you obey the local laws and take general precautions, you should have an incident and worry-free Greece vacation!

Is Greece Good for Couples?

Absolutely! Year after year, Greece ranks one of the world’s top honeymoon destinations. This is due to a variety of reasons.

Greece is a timeless classic from striking blue waters, world-class cuisine, and luxury coastal resorts. It attracts millions of happy couples and honeymooners searching for romance and relaxation each year.

Is Greece worth visiting? Absolutely! Especially if you're looking for a relaxing beach and poolside vacation.

A few of the most popular destinations for a honeymoon or couples retreat include Santorini, Mykonos, Milos, Antiparos, and Ios.

Santorini’s close proximity to Athens makes it an easy choice, while couples looking to escape the tourist crowds choose Antiparos, Milos, or Ios. In fact, Ios is known to have some of the world’s most romantic beaches that are perfect for swimming, hiking, and beach dining.

To Sum Up: Is Greece Worth Visiting in 2024?

So, is Greece worth visiting? As you likely learned from this post, Greece is truly a country that has it all. There are more than a million reasons why Greece is a phenomenal country to visit in 2023, but perfect weather, quiet beaches, and colorful coastal villages are excellent place to start.

While vacationing in Greece, you can discover hidden beaches, admire the magnificent rock formations of Meteora, or savor local wine and fresh seafood in Crete.

The possibilities are endless, from the freshest cuisine and the untouched mountain villages of the north to the lively nightlife scene of tropical Mykonos! Greece truly has something to appeal to every type of traveler.
