Review Overview

Our verdict.

There is something of the ‘age of steam’ about Cornell amps. It’s possibly the logo because, to our eyes, it looks like something that would have graced the tank of a long-scrapped locomotive. The Traveller 5 moniker could also be contributing to this overall impression, too – but that clearly has more to do with this amp’s raison d’être than public transport. Although it’s described as a ‘bedroom style’ handwired amp, its portability and variable power settings are designed for flexibility in a variety of low-wattage scenarios.

The Traveller 5 delivers up to a bracing five watts through an 8-inch Celestion G8C-15 speaker. But if that proves too hot to handle, a four-way switch on the control panel provides three attenuated settings – 1.5, 0.25 and 0.05 watts. Attenuation is achieved through resistive loading.

Given the maximum power rating, the presence of a low input to accompany the high level input may come as a surprise. But if you use high-output pickups or intend to use the Traveller 5 as a low-volume pedal platform, it all makes perfect sense.

Most low-power guitar amps tend to be short on features, but this isn’t the case with the Traveller 5. Here, we have a Clean/Mean switch to adjust clean headroom, along with a gain control and a master volume. With just a single tone control, there’s not much scope for frequency-response sculpting, but the easy-to-access 8-ohm external speaker socket on the control panel makes it easy to audition a variety of cabinets.

cornell amps traveller 5

The basket-weave speaker cloth and wide framing of the robust plywood cabinet make the Traveller 5 look not dissimilar to a scaled down mid-1960s Marshall combo. Everything feels very solid and the finish quality impresses. A more stylish handle and cooler control knobs might give the amp more of a boutique vibe, even if the pricing is firmly in the ‘affordable’ camp.

Although the back panel covers almost the entire rear surface area, there’s a sizeable cutout with a perforated metal grille to protect the valves. In this instance, that’s a 12AX7/ECC83 and an EL84 operating in single-ended mode. There’s also a corner cutout, which provides a convenient storage solution for the mains cable. This means that it just about qualifies as an open-back cabinet.

The build quality is equally impressive inside. All the components are mounted onto an eyelet board that’s made from an epoxy-bonded fibreglass that will never absorb moisture. Clearly, Denis Cornell knows a thing or two about component layouts and everything appears to be arranged to keep signal-path length as short as possible.

The high input is both louder and brighter than the low input, so for general playing duties, we find it the best-sounding and most useful. Beginning in clean mode with the volume control maxed out, a regular Stratocaster pushes the Traveller 5 into overdrive once the gain control reaches about 11 o’clock.

The overdrive first manifests as a growl in the low mids and then progresses upwards in the frequency range to fatten the mids, at the cost of some treble sparkle. It’s a pleasingly rough-edged tone that holds together nicely until the gain control reaches around 3 o’clock, but beyond that, things get a touch fizzy and grainy.

This improves when the volume control is backed off and we quickly discover that the overdrive texture and amount of compression can be altered by balancing the volume and gain controls. Of course, you can exert even more control using the attenuation switch, but we notice that there’s an increase in distortion with the attenuation engaged.

Switching to Mean mode, we hear a fatter midrange and as expected, breakup occurs much earlier. It’s a raunchier tone, with a more British bark and there’s a fair amount of saturation if you need it. Things start to go a bit awry at very high gain settings, but once again, the problem is too much volume rather than too much gain. As before, we notice extra distortion when attenuation is applied – and not of the toneful variety.

cornell amps traveller 5

Because plugging into an external speaker disengages the internal speaker, we are able to gauge how the default Celestion G8C-15 affects the Traveller 5’s tone. Although it has all been fairly positive up to now, hearing the Traveller 5 through a physically larger speaker really lifts the proverbial lid. In short, it turns out that this is a much better amp than we hitherto thought.

Throughout the tests, we’ve been slightly frustrated by a low-mid boxiness and lack of treble sparkle. There’s actually nothing wrong with this circuit, because the missing frequencies have been there all along, it’s just that you can’t really hear them through the stock speaker. It actually sounds pretty wonderful through a Celestion Blue, especially in Clean mode. The Clean/Mean switch’s influence on the midrange becomes more apparent in a UK/US sort of way, and without the G8C-15’s boxy colouration, the effectiveness of the tone control becomes more apparent.

Our only reservation about the Traveller 5 is Cornell’s choice of speaker. Given the amount of space inside the cabinet, we feel an onboard 10-inch speaker would help this amp to realise its full potential, and we’d be interested to see it in head form as well as a combo. Having said that, in its current format, studio-quality tones are certainly available and it’s a fantastic practice and jamming-at-home amp. But with a handful of minor upgrades, it could be so much better.

GUITAR INTERACTIVE STAR RATING:⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Msrp (uk) £499 (us) $tbc.

Great Tone at Low Volumes.

Super small and light.

None, it’s the perfect Practice and Studio amp for Authentic Vintage Guitar Tone.

Onboard 8-inch speaker

1x 12AX7, 1x EL84

Dimensions: 433 x 375 x 85mm

Weight: 9.9kg/21.8lb

The theme behind the new Traveller 5 guitar combo from British amp maker Denis Cornell, is the ability to allow guitar players the opportunity to own an all-valve, hand-built ‘modern classic’ at a fraction of the cost, without compromising the quality of build or tone. Sam Bell takes this little amp for a spin.

Denis Cornell has been making some incredible valve amplifiers for many years, looking through Cornell’s website you can see the vast amount of credentials he has for making some supreme quality, real valve guitar amps. I first tried Cornell amps when I started lecturing at WaterBear Music Collage in Brighton, the director Bruce Dickinson had a plethora of Cornell amps, Plexi style heads, small combos, the works, one of the amps I use in the practice rooms with students is the very amp that I am reviewing today. The Traveller 5.

This is a 5 Watt Valve Combo with an 8 Inch Celestion speaker. The amp is powered by a single ECC84 Pre Amp Valve and a EL84 Power Amp Valve. The Controls are simple, Volume, Tone and Gain. Plus an added ‘Clean’ or ‘Mean’ switch, which when set to mean gives us more pre amp feeling saturation. There is however a 4th control, this control flicks the amp between 4 different power settings. Having it set to A we get 5 watts, B 1.5 watts, C 0.25 watts and D 0.05 watts. Being able to set the overall power down, we can crank the amps volume and gain stages to get authentic feeling breakup and sustain from the amp. This thing can really sing at high gain settings and still retains a clean dynamic tone that responds incredibly well to pick attack and dynamic playing. On the louder A setting of 5 watts, the amp can project very well through its 8-inch speaker. This amp is ideal for small practice situations, bedroom playing, or miced up for pure vintage tone on a gig or in the studio.

The amp sports a Black Tolex wrap and basket weave grill, and it’s very small, light and portable, and I’d imagine that’s the reason it’s called ‘The Traveller 5’. It really is a one-stop shop for pure valve guitar tone, versatility and portability all at a fair price point (these amps are made by Denis here in the UK!) I highly recommend checking this amp out and others in the Cornell range if you are looking for pure valve guitar tone and high quality build.

As soon as a guitar is sold it will be fully set-up to ensure it is playing great right out of the box. It will then go through an inspection checklist and is checked again for quality and playability by two more members of staff. Let us know any preferred setup requirements and we will be happy to oblige!

All new products come with a 12 month warranty as standard. Some products will come with an extended manufacturer’s warranty - these will be included with the product and will usually need to be activated after purchase via the manufacturer’s website. Ex Demo products will also come with a 12 month warranty. Pre-owned products come with a 3 month warranty.

Real time stock levels

Fed up with websites advertising guitar that they don’t actually have? So are we! The Guitar Village website is updated in real-time, so that means the second we sell out of a guitar the website will say ‘out of stock’. If it says ‘In Stock’, rest assured we do actually have it in stock and ready to go!

Actual image photography

We don’t want you to have any nasty surprises when you receive a guitar from us so we do our own photography in-house.

Any high-end guitar with a figured finish or unique features will have its own images. If you see “✓ Actual product in photograph(s)” next to the product listing, this will be the actual item you receive.

Any guitar priced under £2000 with an opaque/block finish, or lightly figured woods may have an example image of the guitar.

Click & collect

Don’t fancy the painful wait at home for the courier to deliver your new toy?

If you’re not a million miles away not come in and collect it from the shop? All you need to do it select “Collect from store” at the checkout, pay in full online then pop in with proof of purchase, along with some photo ID* and you can take it away right then and there!

*Photo ID must be a valid passport or driving license.

Ex Demo/New Old Stock Products

Occasionally we list items as ‘Ex Demo’ or ‘New Old Stock’. These are new but may not necessarily be in perfect condition and could have had minor repairs, marks, scratches and/or other defects.

These will be fully described and discounted accordingly.

At Guitar Village we're committed to offering you the very best shopping experience possible. We strive to provide you with an unmatched choice of guitars as well as our award-winning friendly customer service, combined with the best prices in the UK. Occasionally the odd price pops up a little cheaper somewhere else. We don't want any of our customers to ever have to decide between our high level of service and a lower price, so we will always endeavour to price match our UK competitors.

To qualify for a price match it must be:

  • From an official authorised dealer,
  • Identical to the product we are selling (model, colour, specs),
  • In stock and ready to ship,
  • Clearly advertised at the cheaper price on their website (not a price quoted over the phone),
  • An outright purchase price, not including finance, part exchange or any other offer.

Usually these cheaper prices are offered by online-only warehouse retailers with little overheads and a "stack 'em high, sell 'em cheap" philosophy, sacrificing the customer service that's essential to back-up any purchase.

When you buy from Guitar Village you can rest assured that your item will be:

  • In stock if the website says it is,
  • Guitars fully setup to any given requirements by one of our full time in-house guitar techs prior to dispatch,
  • Triple checked through our extensive quality control,
  • Safely and securely packaged, then dispatched using UPS - fully tracked and insured,
  • Full after-sales customer support.

The Kremlin and Red Square in Moscow, Russia

The Kremlin and Red Square were added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1990.

Russian secrets? Here’s the ultimate Moscow itinerary

Tour architectural wonders, discover Soviet history, and savor local flavors in this gold-domed city.

Moscow is a city where the past and the future live side by side. Here you will find everything from medieval fortresses and Soviet monoliths to glass skyscrapers and innovation centers. Moscow’s spirit mirrors its uncontainable size. Muscovites, the city’s approximately 12 million residents, are always on the run, so be prepared to keep pace with their energy. Here’s how to make the most of three days in Moscow .

Day 1: Mosaics and metro stations

9 a.m. Navigate the labyrinth of the Moscow metro , a living, breathing work of art crisscrossing the metropolis. Expect marble arches and pillars, gilded mosaics, and sparkling chandeliers. Each station is unique. Some of the most beautiful stations are Kievskaya and Prospekt Mira (brown line); Mayakovskaya (dark green line); and Ploschad Revolutsii , Arbatskaya and Elektrozavodskaya (dark blue line). Getting lost on the metro is a rite of passage. However, ahead of the 2018 World Cup, most trains introduced route maps and announcements in English to make navigation easier for outsiders.

Three stations take you to Red Square, but Ploschad Revolutsii is ideal. Its platforms have numerous bronze statues of soldiers with their dogs. Locals often stop by to rub the dogs’ noses as they make a wish. ( See pictures of Moscow’s surprisingly elegant subway stations. )

9:45 a.m. Head to the iconic Red Square to see the red-bricked towers and the eastern wall of the Moscow Kremlin, Vladimir Lenin’s mausoleum, the State Historical Museum , and the psychedelically colorful domes of the St. Basil’s Cathedral . Queue early outside Lenin’s mausoleum for a spooky date with the man behind the Russian Revolution, who has rested in this tomb, preserved in chemicals, for almost 100 years .

The postcard-perfect St. Basil’s Cathedral was built in the 16th century to commemorate Tsar Ivan the Terrible’s victory over the Khanate of Kazan and the transformation of Moscow into a major center of power. Drop in for a quick visit or keep walking south towards the Moskva River and the Bolshoi Moskvaretskii Bridge for spectacular views of the Kremlin and the Red Square.

a woman in the rain in central Moscow, Russia

Another structure that will catch your eye is the golden-domed Cathedral of Christ the Savior , just southwest of the Kremlin. Unlike St. Basil’s, this Cathedral did not survive the communist persecution of religion. The original was destroyed in 1931 and the area was converted to an open-air swimming pool, the largest in the world. The fall of communism brought with it religious freedom and the Cathedral was rebuilt in the 1990s. If you turn around, you will see one of the “Seven Sisters,” the Stalinist monoliths that command Moscow’s skyline .

11:45 a.m. Head back towards the Red Square for a shopping trip at GUM (pronounced goom ), the largest department store in Russia. Much like Russia, the store has undergone many changes. Built in imperial times as a massive trading center, GUM’s Soviet-era badge of honor was being relatively better stocked than other stores. Today, it’s a glittering mall that houses Hermès and Louis Vuitton. Even if you don’t shop, the long, arched galleries and concave glass roof make it an architectural delight. Next, make your way to the third floor for Stolovaya No. 57 (Canteen No. 57), a Soviet-style restaurant with local dishes and a laid-back vibe. Try the syrniki (roughly translated as cheesecakes), buckwheat with mushroom sauce, or meat cutlets.

2 p.m. The Moscow Kremlin , the seat of the Russian Government, was built in the 15th century and houses cathedrals, museums, and unique objects from imperial Russia. Start with the Armory Chamber , a treasure trove of Fabergé eggs, imperial dresses, and gifts presented to the Tsars. Don’t miss the Diamond Fund inside the Armory where guests can marvel at the crown of Tsarina Catherine the Great.

the inside of Marinsky Theater during a ballet in Moscow, Russia

The Bolshoi Theatre hosts ballet and opera performances, including classics like Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake.

Take a stroll around Cathedral Square to admire the golden domes that mushroom from Orthodox cathedrals. Look out for the 19-foot-high bronze Tsar Bell for great photo ops. The nearby Tsar Cannon is also worth a look. Wrap up in the Kremlin Garden and see if you can spot Cosmos, the lone oak tree that was planted by Yuri Gagarin, the first man in space, two days after his extraordinary flight in April 1961 . ( Trees that traveled to space now live on Earth. Here’s where to find them. )

7 p.m. Finish your day with a ballet or opera performance at Bolshoi Theatre , one of the strongholds of Russian theatrical excellence since the 19th century. If you are lucky, you might be able to catch Tchaikovsky’s masterpiece Swan Lake on the stage where it premiered in 1877. Performances sell out so book in advance, and arrive early to enjoy the neoclassical building. Russians take theater seriously so wear your best outfit.

Day 2: Fine art and food

10 a.m. The extraordinary entrance to Tretyakov Gallery welcomes guests to Moscow’s most definitive collection of fine arts spanning almost a millennium. You can explore 12th-century icons and mosaics or get lost in the brushstrokes of 19th- and 20th-century Russian heavyweights such as Ivan Shishkin and Ilya Repin. The New Tretyakov wing showcases artists from the Soviet period.

1 p.m. Soak up some summer sun in one of Moscow’s most dynamic open spaces: Park Gorky , a hipster paradise that underwent a major makeover from a Soviet relic to the center of cultural life. Grab some food on the go or sit down for a meal at Grill Bar Zharovnya or La Boule . Wander through the open-air sculpture museum, Muzeon , the home of countless statues and symbols from the Soviet times. Muzeon runs next to the Moscow River and offers a great view of the almost 322-foot-high statue of Tsar Peter the Great.

7 p.m. One place you must dine in Moscow is White Rabbit . The restaurant, which has been featured among the top 50 in the world, owes its success to chef Vladimir Mukhin, whose culinary prowess was featured on Netflix’s Chef’s Table . White Rabbit serves Russian food with innovative twists; think sea urchin caviar and beetroot hummus. Quite fittingly, there is also rabbit on the menu. Did we mention the restaurant’s glass dome offers spectacular views of Moscow City?

Day 3: Markets and museums

10 a.m. If the Moscow Kremlin is stately, then the colorful Izmailovo Kremlin cultural center has a bit of a Disneyland feel to it. Built in 2007, Izmailovo is a great place for a stroll before bargain-hunting at Vernisazh , a flea market with stalls selling Cold War memorabilia. You will find stamps, banknotes, pins, propaganda posters, and even steel mugs from Soviet times. Score great deals on matryoshkas , Russian nesting dolls; khokhloma , hand-painted wooden handicrafts; and Baltic amber jewelry. Don’t miss contemporary twists on traditional Russian gifts, such as nesting dolls of modern politicians and music boxes shaped like Orthodox cathedrals. For a market of its popularity, Vernisazh prices are a steal and you can haggle without hesitation. Saturdays and Sundays are the best days to visit.

Russian nesting dolls in Moscow, Russia

Russian nesting dolls make the perfect souvenir, and are sold throughout Moscow, including at the Vernisazh flea market.

1 p.m. By now, you have probably got the sense that there is more to see in Moscow than time to see it. So pick what you crave most. Want more of Orthodox churches? Head to the UNESCO World Heritage site of Novodevichy Convent , which was once used by the women of the Tsar’s family. Still looking for souvenirs and gifts? Make your way to Stari Arbat (Old Arbat), a historical cobblestone street of shops and restaurants. Want to delve deeper into Russian history? Visit the State Historical Museum on the Red Square. A Cold War buff? The Bunker 42 Museum located 18 floors below Taganskaya metro was a strategic command center and an anti-nuclear shelter. A fan of Russian literature? Check out the Gogol House and the Bulgakov Museum . Want another serving of art? Try the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts or the Garage Museum .

8 p.m. End your stay in Moscow with a nice meal. Café Pushkin offers antique interiors, delicious Russian dishes, and five-star service. Even if you don’t eat here, grab a cup of the Pushkin chai, a signature Earl Grey blend with citrusy overtones. For casual fare, go to Varenichnaya (multiple locations), which has an extensive menu of Russian dishes and decor straight out of a Soviet poster. Mari Vanna (multiple locations) is another choice Russian chain.

Moscow is also a great place to try the food from other Soviet states. Head to Khachapuri to try the namesake khachapuri , Georgian stuffed-cheese bread. For authentic Uzbek plov , make a reservation at Uzbekistan . Want to keep enjoying the outdoors? Bar Strelka is a trendy spot with great views, excellent food, and a dance floor to keep the night going .
