Destination must-see's.

South Africa ms1

Cape Town is the second most populated city in South Africa. It’s known for its landscapes, gardens, museums, cuisine and wine, but most importantly, it’s known for its wildlife. South Africa is a great place to see the Big Five: elephants, rhinos, leopards, lions and buffalo, as well as many species of snakes, birds and even eight different species of whales.

South Africa ms2

Referred to as “The Place of the Mountain” this Big 5 reserve also has five eco-systems. It has a moderate climate year round with rainfall in summer. The area is malaria-free and has an upper area with rock formations and grass plains, and a lower area of vegetation and wetlands.

South Africa ms3

Hanglip Mountain Lodge:

There’s never a dull moment at Hanglip Mountain Lodge! The luxury suites here are a great blend of romantic African and African baroque. There are ten luxury bedrooms, spa facilities, dining room and lounge, bar facilities, wine cellar, swimming pool, and the Hanglip fig tree outdoor venue. Every room has a private deck with views of the mountain and lounge areas with welcoming fireplaces. There are also game drives, bush walks, horseback safaris, helicopter flights, paintball; abseiling, and quad bikes.

Kruger National Park:

Imagine yourself exploring almost five million acres of protected game reserve spread out on the plains of South Africa. Here you can see the Big 5: elephants, buffalos, lions, leopards and rhinos running free out in their natural habitat. But wait! There are more than three hundred types of trees and five hundred species of birds to admire, too!

Destination Must-Do's

South Africa md1

Table Mountain:

This landmark is Africa’s most welcoming and photographed attraction and it’s no wonder why! Visitors enjoy riding to the top of the mountain by cable car where the most spectacular views can be found. The mountain is home to thousands of species of plants and flowers as well as the Kirstenbosch Botanical Garden. Definitely do not leave your camera behind for this trip!

South Africa md2

Featherbed Reserve (milk trees):

Located on the Knysna lagoon, there is much to see in the Featherbed Nature Reserve. You can explore the reserve riding on a 4x4 vehicle and trailer that takes visitors to key viewpoints on the reserve, or you can explore an ancient sea cave. Milk trees are extremely common here and they can grow up to six feet tall and have a spiny shrub-like look with small yellow flowers along the side.

BouldersBeach800x450

Boulders Beach:

Feel the sea breeze in your hair and the sand between your toes at Boulder’s Beach in False Bay. Aside from being a beautiful spot to lounge, swim, and picnic, it’s also the only place in the world where you can observe African Penguins in their natural habitat. A colony of these adorably furry endangered birds settled at the beach in 1982 and never left. You’ll probably want to stay a while too.

South Africa md4

Winelands Region:

South Africa has some really great wine. Visit the heart of the winelands region and take in the colorful mountains and vineyards that seem to go on for days. Don’t forget to taste some of that delicious stuff while you’re there!

Expert Advice

As you prepare to explore South Africa, enjoy a casual dress style and be sure to pack comfortable walking shoes. Lightweight cottons are suggested for shorts, slacks, tee shirts, as well as hats and one warm jacket and/or jumper.

South Africa e2

You’re in for a treat as you sample the truly unique flavors of Africa. The cuisine is sometimes called "rainbow cuisine," as it enjoys a variety of multicultural sources. Eating and drinking in South Africa is a culinary experience not to be missed.

South Africa e3

One of the best parts of traveling is coming back home with souvenirs that really reflect the place you’ve just been. In South Africa you’ll find a plethora of cultural products like carvings of animals made of soap stone, ebony, or other woods; wooden masks, bowls, jewelry and chess sets; jewelry made of precious stones like diamonds and semi-precious stones such as malachite, lapis and topaz; native art paintings, murals and sculptures; safari clothing; and tie-dyed prints of animals.

Travel Map

We depart for New York, where we will overnight near JFK airport.

Morning departure for Johannesburg.

We arrive in Johannesburg and transfer to our Hotel. This evening we enjoy Welcome Cocktails and our Welcome Dinner.

We start with a tour of Johannesburg and a visit to the Apartheid Museum. In the afternoon we visit the township of Soweto - the most populous black residential area in the country. Soweto sets the trends for South Africa in politics, fashion, music and dance. You will never forget your visit here.

We fly to Victoria Falls and transfer to our lovely lodge hotel. This evening we enjoy a sunset cruise on the Zambezi River and dinner will be a special African experience.

We enjoy a morning tour of the Falls - a sight to behold! We then proceed to our safari lodge near Chobe National Park - home to a wide variety of wildlife, including hippo and elephants that troll the river paths to drink. We take our first game cruise in the late afternoon.

On our morning game drive we enjoy the wonderful surroundings of wild Africa! In the afternoon we take a boat ride along the river and get up close with the bounty of Chobe as we view herds of Kudu, waterbuck and possibly elephants coming to the river to drink.

We fly from Victoria Falls back to Johannesburg, and then proceed to our hotel en route to Kruger National Park.

We proceed to Kruger National Park for wildlife viewing at its best! The park offers an experience in beauty, tranquility and variety not found anywhere else in the world. En route we visit the majestic Blyde River Canyon to see God’s Window and Bourke’s Luck Potholes - true natural wonders! Our hotel is located just outside the Park.

A full day of game viewing in open safari vehicles. We start early in the morning, the best time to find the world's largest variety of wildlife including the Big Five (lion, elephant, rhino, leopard and buffalo), hippo, cheetah, giraffe, zebra and crocodile. The park is also home to more than 400 bird species.

A morning at leisure to enjoy the various activities at the hotel. Relax by the pool, do some game or bird watching or take a nature walk. Later we depart for our evening game drive to see if we can catch some nocturnal animals in the spotlight. Dinner this evening is under African skies.

We return to Johannesburg for our flight to George, on South Africa's fabled Garden Route.

Today we visit a local Township for a chance to meet the children at a primary school. We then take a ferry ride to the Featherbed Nature Reserve, dedicated to the protection of the flora of the Garden Route. We enjoy a sumptuous lunch at the reserve. Dinner is at a special seafood restaurant.

We travel over the mountains to Oudtshoorn to visit an ostrich farm where those who wish may ride one! Then we visit the Cango Caves, whose beauty will leave a lasting impression.

A full day at leisure to enjoy the peaceful ambiance and lovely waterfront area of the quaint seaside resort town of Knysna. Tonight we enjoy dinner at a local restaurant.

Our Garden Route drive takes us along the coast, around lakes, mountains, golden beaches and cliffs - an enchanting drive with a romantic history. We arrive in Cape Town and take a cable car ride up Table Mountain for panoramic views.

Our city tour shows us the Malay Quarter, the Botanical Gardens and more. Afternoon at leisure to shop and people watch at the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront area.

A Winelands tour through lovely scenery of vineyards, oak shaded rivers and old Dutch colonial homes. We enjoy a tasting in a wine cellar and lunch at a private estate. In Stellenbosch we visit the Village Museum.

A full-day tour to Cape Point. After a boat ride to Seal Island we continue south to Cape Point and the Cape of Good Hope, where we see the colonies of seals and penguins in their natural environment. Tonight is our Farewell Dinner.

Time at leisure to explore this beautiful city on your own, before our afternoon departure to the airport for our flight home.

We change planes in New York and continue our journey back to Canada.

Tour operator, senior discovery tours.

Founded in:

Senior Discovery Tours is the company you hoped existed. We manage the details so you enjoy the destinations.

Founded in 1975, we’re Canada’s largest operator of guided tours for the mature traveller, offering more than 100 different international tours and cruises that deliver outstanding service, value and discovery.

1. Experience freedom from care

The comment we hear most from our travellers is how carefree our tours are. We manage all the details, big and small, so you can enjoy your holiday without any of the hassles normally associated with travel. Flights, hotels, meals, baggage handling at hotels, transportation and sightseeing excursions are all included. And in most Canadian cities, we’ll even pick you up and drop you off at home.

2. Tour Managers you can count on

Our travellers always rave about our Tour Managers. They attend to every detail, ensuring your trip runs smoothly. For instance, at hotels they’ll check you in and out, tip the staff on your behalf and keep track of your luggage. Their energetic approach to travel enlivens every tour, and their experience prepares them to gracefully and expertly handle unexpected situations. Our Tour Managers are also expert at creating a positive group dynamic so that everyone enjoys a great sense of camaraderie.

3. Enjoy a more leisurely trip

Most of our multi-stop tours stay in each locale for at least two days, and our “stay-put” holidays allow you to settle into one or two hotels for the entire duration of the tour. You’ll have plenty of time to explore, shop and take it all in at your own pace.

4. Put your mind at ease

On most tours, daily breakfast and dinner, and sometimes even lunch, are included in the price. Most meals are pre-arranged so you never have to worry about finding a restaurant in a strange place. As well, all of the hotels we use have been personally inspected to ensure quality and value.

5. No surprise costs

The price of every tour covers all costs, including all taxes, travel insurance, tipping, baggage handling at hotels and of course pre-arranged excursions and entertainment (which other tour companies charge extra for). The price is guaranteed in Canadian dollars and there are never any hidden surcharges.

It has to do with distance from the rest of the world - not just a physical distance, but a deliberate distance in the way we decide to live. Partly it has to do with silence. At night, you can feel a lion's roar.

African Parks

African Parks is a non-profit conservation organisation that takes on the complete responsibility for the rehabilitation and long-term management of national parks in partnership with governments and local communities. We currently manage 16 national parks and protected areas in 10 countries covering almost 11 million hectares: Benin, Central African Republic, Chad, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Malawi, Mozambique, the Republic of Congo, Rwanda, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

SAVE OUR RHINOS

Great Plains Conservation has committed alongside industry partner andBeyond to undertake a relocation of rhinos on a magnitude never done before – to relocate no less than 100 rhino from South Africa to safe havens in Botswana. Since the project began, we have moved 87 rhino and our dedicated rhino monitoring team has reported the birth of 18 calves in their new home! Due to the generosity of individuals, the tourism industry, and our partners, we are over half-way to our goal of raising funds to move 100 rhino. Join us in ensuring these animals can continue to roam free! View >>

Enjoy our exclusive shark scuba diving and Big 5 Safari extravaganza!

3 nights / 5 dives on Aliwal Shoal, 3 nights / 4 dives on Protea Banks, 3 night Hluhluwe / iMfolozi Safari Adveture

Arrive King Shaka International Airport - Durban (DUR), own arrangements. (Arrival at King Shaka International Airport - Durban, to be advised.) On arrival you will meet your driver / guide for the 85 kms / 1-hour road transfer to Agulhas House in Umkomaas. Rest of the day free.

Overnight at Agulhas House in Umkomaas in a twin/double, en suite, air-conditioned, room on a fully inclusive basis. Continental breakfast, hot ”brunch” and dinner.

Agulhas House in Umkomaas

After an early wake-up call, at about 05h00, you will have a light continental breakfast. Agulhas House staff will load your already assembled dive gear onto the dive boat, which is still in its parking bay behind the lodge. At about 06h40, we assemble at the lodge for the first dive briefing before being transferred in a 4x4, from the lodge, for the 15 minute road transfer to the launch site, which is situated at the Umkomaas River mouth lagoon. Once at the launch site we will have a second short dive briefing, instructions on boat safely, and be handed the lifejackets before we launch the "Duck" (Zodiac/ RIB) for your two scheduled dives on Aliwal Shoal, the first being a baited shark dive followed by the 2nd dive, a reef / wreck dive, weather permitting.

All diving in South Africa is best done early in the morning, at dawn, as this is when there is no wind, no swell, no currents, and definitely the best time to dive. As the morning wears on, the winds tend to pick up causing a chop on the water, large swells, which result in unpleasant diving conditions.

The reefs of Aliwal Shoal are fossilised sandstone, almost 80 000 years ago. 80 000 years ago the area around the shoal consisted of sand dunes, and as a result of heavy rains, the sand and shale dissolved forming a compound of calcium carbonate, which today forms the main body of the shoal. These reefs are covered with both soft and hard corals and have an abundance of fish life that is normally associated with coral reef diving.

Aliwal is about 2½ km’s long with a width averaging 150 meters. Depths very from 6 to 27 meters (19 to 88 ft.) and the shoal offers a tapestry of diversity. The Cathedral area of the reef is one of the more spectacular dives. Its inhabitants include the Ragged Tooth Shark (in season - June to October), Loggerhead Turtle, and Ribbon Tailed Rays.

In addition to the reef itself, there are also two good wrecks on which to dive. The Produce , an 18 000 ton Norwegian tanker that hit the Shoal and sank in 1974 and the second could be on the Nebo , which struck the shoal in May 1884 and sunk almost immediately with its cargo of railway material. Both wrecks lie at approximately 30 meters and are fairly intact, which makes for great wreck diving.

Ragged Tooth Shark

Unfortunately only time for a guided reef / wreck dive on Aliwal Shoal this morning, weather permitting. After the dive has been completed, you will return to Agulhas House for a shower, brunch, and check-out, before Agulhas House transfers you to Shelly Beach, and St Michaels Sands Hotel (St Mike’s,) for your 4-scheduled dives on Protea Banks. This is about an 85 kilometres / 1-hour road transfer. En route to St Mike’s you will stop by Aqua Planet’s Dive Centre, in Shelly Beach. At the dive center you will meet with Aqua Planet’s dive crew, unpack your dive gear to let it dry, and select your rental dive gear in preparation for the following days scheduled dives on Protea. We suggest that you do this immediately upon your arrival in Shelly Beach, before going onto St Mike’s. This is firstly to dry out your dive gear, and select your dive gear. Secondly, the following morning’s Protea pre-dive activities are usually hectic and rushed. After you’ve met the crew, and selected all your gear and weight requirements, you will continue the short 10-minute transfer to St Mike’s.

Overnight at the St Mike’s in a sea-facing, air-conditioned, en suite, double / twin / single room, on a bed, and breakfast basis.

St Mike’s

At a time as advised the previous day, when you stopped by Aqua Planets dive center, you will be transferred from St Mike’s to Aqua Planets dive centre where, over a cup of coffee, you will meet the team, fellow “dive buddies,” and to kit-up. After kitting up you then transfer the 15 minutes or so to the “base” which is the Sonny Evans Small Craft Harbour in Shelly Beach, called the “base” because it is also the actual base for the local NSRI (National Sea Rescue Institute). Here you will have the full pre-dive briefing for your two scheduled dives for the day on the reefs of Protea Banks.

Your first dive of the day on Protea Banks is scheduled as a “baited” shark dive, followed by a deep, Protea reef dive, as the second dive, weather permitting. We say “ scheduled ” because weather conditions may force the skipper and DM to change the order in which we do baited shark dives and the deep reef dives on Protea.

Please note that all Protea Reef dives are deep dives, in excess of 30-meters, and are restricted to advanced divers only.

Hammerhead Shark in Protea Banks

After an early breakfast, you will be picked up from St Mike’s in Shelly Beach @ 08h00 by our representative for the road transfer through the heart of “The Kingdom of the Zulu” to to Rhino Ridge Safari Lodge in the Hluhluwe / iMfolozi Game Reserve via St Lucia. This is a 370 km or 4-hour road transfer from St Mike’s to Advantage Cruises jetty at St Lucia, scheduled to arrive at the jetty at about 11h30, in time to join the 12h00 cruise up the St Lucia Estuary. At 12h00 you will board the Advantage Cruiser for a 2-hour boat cruise up the St Lucia River Estuary for close up sightings of hippo, crocodile, mangrove swamps, birds, and many, many more that inhabit the Isimangaliso Wetland Park which was declared a world heritage site in 1999, and is one of 552 world heritage sites worldwide. The main objective of the detour is that after the cruise, you leave the Isimangaliso Wetland Park with an appreciation of the fragile eco system, and why it was declared a Wetland Park, and go back home with photographs and memories of the animals that inhabit the Estuary that will last a lifetime. The Advantage Cruiser is equipped with a fully licensed bar; tuck shop, toilets, PA system, and the popular sundeck, for better animal viewing. The Advantage Cruiser was built specifically to venture into shallow waters, for those up close photos of hippo and crocodile. After the boat cruise, which lasts approximately 2-hours, you will continue on to the Hluhluwe / iMfolozi Game Reserve and Rhino Ridge Safari Lodge.

The Advantage Cruiser

The plan is to get you to Rhino Ridge Safari Lodge to check in, explore your new surroundings, enjoy high tea, and to join the afternoon / evening safari / game drive, which departs Rhino Ridge Safari Lodge at 16h30.

Hluhluwe is one of the oldest and largest game parks in South Africa; the Hluhluwe-Umfolozi Park is renowned for its wide variety of bird and animal life. Besides ‘The Big Five’ (lion, leopard, elephant, rhino and buffalo), the elusive cheetah, wild dogs and many other well - known Bushveld species inhabit the park, offering the visitors a rich game viewing experience. The park covers 96 000 hectares, and comprises three reserves: Hluhluwe and Umfolozi - two of Africa’s oldest game reserves, both founded in 1895 - and the linking Corridor Reserve, proclaimed in 1989. Hluhluwe has the distinction of being the oldest “formally” protected area in Africa! In 1895, with about only 20 southern white rhino’s surviving on earth, and these in Imfolozi, the threat to the species survival was dire, and the proclamation of the Hluhluwe / Imfolozi Game Reserves ensured their survival. Hluhluwe / Imfolozi Game Reserves now “export” white Rhino’s to reserves all over Africa where they were originally found. A truly wonderful success story!

White Rhino

After high-tea you will assemble in the reception area where you will be introduced to your Ranger and Tracker and depart the lodge at 16h30 for your afternoon / evening game drive (safari). This safari is conducted in "open" Land Cruisers with professional guides. After the 3-hour safari, at about 19h00, depending on animal activity, you will return to Rhino Ridge Safari Lodge for dinner. Dinner will be either in the restaurant or on the deck, under the African stars.

Overnight at Rhino Ridge Safari Lodge, in an air-conditioned, en suite, double / twin / single “Safari Room” (subject to availability) on a fully inclusive basis.

Main Deck - Rhino Ridge Safari Lodge

Two full days spent on safari with Rhino Ridge Safari Lodge in Hluhluwe / iMfolozi Game Reserve. You will be woken up at 06h00 by an early morning wake up telephone call for early morning tea / coffee and “rusks” which are served in the lodge’s public area, after which you will depart on your early morning safari at about 07h00. Please check departure times with reception the night before, as this changes from month to month, depending on sunrise. All animal viewing is best done in the early morning and late afternoon when it’s cool. This is when the animals are more active and easier to spot. From about 10h00 till 15h00, when the day is at its hottest, the animals tend to lie in the shade, not moving, which makes for difficult game viewing. While on safari, you will stop somewhere in the bush for tea / coffee and snacks, after which, you will continue with the safari. Depending on animal activity, you will return to the lodge at about 09h30 / 10h00 for “brunch”. The rest of the morning / afternoon is free to laze by the pool, visit the Spa, spend time bird watching around camp, or join a three hour guided bush walk. Please note that the cost of the guided bush walks is ZAR 580 per person, and is not included in the cost below, and would be for your own account.

Leopard

At about 15h00, you will again assemble for high tea before departing on the evening safari. At sunset you will stop somewhere in the bush for “sundowners” whilst you watch the African set below the horizon. After sunset, you will continue with the safari into the night, looking for the nocturnal animals with the aid of a powerful spot lamp. After the evening safari, depending on animal activity, you will return to Rhino Ridge Safari Lodge for dinner.

Overnight at Rhino Ridge Safari Lodge in an air-conditioned, en suite, double / twin / single “Safari” Room on a fully inclusive basis.

After the early morning safari, followed by a quick, or maybe even a packed, to go “brunch,” you will be collected from Rhino Ridge Safari Lodge by our representative, for the 230 km or 4 hour return road transfer back to King Shaka International Airport - Durban, to connect with your return flight home. (Flight details to be advised.)

End of services.
