Super Junior Talk New Album, Super Show 9 and Share Hopes For a U.S. Tour

Super Junior are looking to the future and hope to perform in front of their U.S. fans one day soon, the group told Newsweek.

The iconic K-Pop boy band have been in the business for 17 years, which is no mean feat, and they recently released their 11th studio album, The Road : Keep on Going .

Members Leeteuk, Yesung, Shindong, Eunhyuk, Donghae, Siwon, Ryeowook and Kyuhyun spoke to Newsweek about their new album, their Super Show 9 concerts in Seoul, and their hopes to take the tour to the U.S. and beyond.

Super Junior Share Their Hopes For a U.S. Tour and Their Delight Over Super Show 9

Super Junior

Super Junior have been hard at work with their first tour since "Super Show 8: Infinite Time" which finished in February 2020 before the COVID-19 pandemic stopped concerts and similar events from being held in-person.

The group welcomed fans over three nights at Jamsil Arena in Seoul, South Korea, from July 15 to 17, and the tour is titled "Super Show 9 : The Road" after their most recent album.

Donghae expressed his desire to take the tour on a more global scale when the situation allows for it, adding that the group would love to visit the U.S. and put on the show for their fanbase, known as E.L.F.

"We're interested in taking our Super Show 9 series to the U.S.," Donghae told Newsweek. " It's been a while since we've had a concert so we are ready to go wherever our E.L.F. wants us to be.

"Our E.L.F. are always supporting us and if they want it, we'll make it happen so that we can meet there!"

One of the concerts held in Seoul was available to stream online via Beyond LIVE, giving Super Junior's global E.L.F the chance to still enjoy the tour even though the group are currently unable to travel as widely as they'd like.

Shindong reflected on the way in which technology has allowed the group to stay connected with their fanbase around the globe, calling it a "very special moment" for the band to be able to share with them.

"It was an exciting and very special moment being able to meet our worldwide fans simultaneously," he explained, before adding: "But I am waiting for the day we'll be able to meet and perform face-to-face once the pandemic is over."

Making a promise to Super Junior's fanbase around the world, Shindong went on: "We'll come see you soon!"

Looking back at the shows that they did and what it was like to be in front of fans again, Kyuhyun told Newsweek : "It's been a while since we've last seen our fans so I was curious to see if they'd still be waiting for us or not.

"I'd have to say, it was exciting just thinking about being able to sing and dance right in front of our fans who had been watching us online until now."

Yesung went on: "Getting to perform together as a group on stage again was [as] exciting [as] when we debuted. It's a time that we, Super Junior, and our fans have been waiting for so I hope we'll be able to meet more often. I'd also like to take this moment to say thank you for waiting for us!"

When asked if there was anything they felt they'd learned from each other during their preparation for the show, Ryeowook chimed in by saying: "I've spent almost 20 years with Super Junior so there's definitely parts that I know and can predict, but one thing I realized was that everyone's got great stamina.

"We've all been working out and taking care of ourselves well, which is why we were able to have fun and fully enjoy the concert.

"We also have a huge heart for each other so we were always putting each other first when preparing for it. I was especially touched by Shindong when he gifted me new earphones to use. I probably sang better because of it, so thank you Shindong!"

Ryeowook went on: "Through this past offline concert in Seoul, we were able to breathe the same air, sing, dance, and chat together with our E.L.F. It was such a great moment, and I'm excited for the upcoming world tour."

Super Junior Talk New Album 'The Road : Keep on Going'

Super Junior's 11th album The Road : Keep on Going was released on July 12 and it features five tracks, with the summer pop hit "Mango" becoming the title track.

The album, according to Eunhyuk, is indicative of the band's thoughts for the future, and how they feel they have evolved as a group.

" The Road : Keep on Going is about 'The Road' that Super Junior is standing at and how it'll 'Keep on Going' just like the album's sub-title," Eunhyuk explained. "It's an album that combines the colors of Super Junior that we've shown before, along with new colors that we're trying out and developing. The album consists of various genres that express Super Junior well."

The album's release also saw the band make K-Pop history as they became the first group under record label SM Entertainment to reach such a feat.

Leeteuk was full of praise for his bandmates and what they'd achieved together, sharing: "It's a very exciting moment, and we're writing a good page in K-Pop history that's very valuable because it's something that came naturally for us."

"More than anything, I hope we'll remain consistent and continue moving forth the way we've been," he added.

Siwon explained that title track "Mango" was "very sweet" like the fruit the song was named after, which helped showcase a lighter, more fun side to the group.

"What I like best about the title track 'Mango' is the melody and exciting atmosphere," Siwon told Newsweek . "Like a mango, the lyrics are very sweet in how it describes wanting to be by your side and I like the meaning it holds—I'm the one you need.

"'Mango' is a track that I believe showcases that bright side of Super Junior well."

Reflecting on his favorite song from the album, Shindong named "Don't Wait," the first song the band released with a music video ahead of "The Road : Keep on Going" coming out.

Shindong explained that he chose the song because "it's a track that was able to show the playful sides of Super Junior on a whole new level."

Looking to the future, Leeteuk said: "My hopes for Super Junior is for us to continue on while maintaining our cool, classic-ness instead of growing old with time."

Super Junior (formed in 2005) is a ten strong South Korean pop group created by Lee Soo-man of S.M. Entertainment.

The pop group was originally formed of twelve members: Leeteuk, Heechul, Hankyung, Yesung, Kangin, Shindong, Sungmin, Eunhyuk, Donghae, Ryeowook and Kibum, with thirteenth member Kyuhyun joining in 2006. The members were added to the group by S.M. Entertainment following a series of casting auditions and competitions from 2000-2005. In 2005 an announcement came from Lee Soo-man that the band, chosen for their previous experiences as actors, would debut by the end of the year.

The group’s first official debut was on SBS’s Popular Songs music program on November 6, 2005, where Super Junior performed their first single “Twins (Knock Out)”. Super Junior’s debut album “Twins” released December 6, 2005, sold over 28,000 copies in the first months and debuted at No. 3 in the album chart.

On May 25, 2006, with the addition of thirteenth member Kyuhyun, Super Junior released their single “U” for a free digital download. Within five hours downloads exceeded 400,000 and the single became one of Korea’s most popular songs of the year. A number of sub-groups followed Super Junior including Super Junior-K.R.Y., and Super Junior-T, which were targeted at different audiences. The music and sound of the band varies on every album from bubblegum pop to contemporary R&B and beyond.

Super Junior’s follow-up album “Don’t Don” was eventually released on September 20, 2007 after a number of set backs, the album had mixed critical reviews despite becoming the second best-selling album of the year. After their first Asia-wide tour named Super Show in 2008 and breakthrough into Japan the group released their third studio album titled “Sorry, Sorry” on March 12, 2009. The album became South Korea’s best selling album in 2009 after a month of release and the title track stayed at the top of the chart for ten consecutive weeks.

The band’s subsequent album’s “Bonamana” (2010), “Mr. Simple” (2011), “Sexy, Free & Single” (2012) and “Mamacita” (2014) all cemented Super Junior’s commercial success and were followed by ever expanding tours including South America and Europe.

Live reviews

I've been following Super Junior forever now, and they are my absolute favorite Korean boyband, even moreso than 2PM (if you know me, you'd know that I LOVE 2PM). One of the best parts about Super Junior is that they have 12 boys in their band as opposed to 4-6, so there's not only a lot more talent on the stage at one time, but there's also a lot more eye candy.

My favorites are Kangin and Siwon - they're also the best dancers in my opinion. Leeteuk is the best singer in my opinion, followed by Eunhyuk, but all the boys are great when they're together on stage. The group has great synergy when you see them live that you can also view online if you look for their dance music videos - it's almost the same thing! They're really well synchronized with one another and the dance choreography is even more impressive when you see it in person because their steps for each move are almost sync'd together. It's totally amazing how much practice and effort they have to put into their performances. I'd highly recommend that everyone see them even if you don't really like Korean pop music that much, because they're just so good live, that you might change your mind! You won't be "Sorry Sorry" (see? Super Junior pun!)!

Report as inappropriate

If you thought Blazing Squad had a lot of members, wait until you check out South Korean pop sensation Super Junior. Pop music has always been something of an obsession in Asian countries with an emphasis on the whole drama and show associated with the genre. There is no doubt that a Super Junior show is a lot of fun but it definitely feels as though they are appealing to a younger audience.

There are great production elements as visual interludes help narrate the show and certain band members get the chance to solo to screaming fans. They come together once more for complex dance routines and simply fill every inch of the stage with the sheer quantity of performers onstage as the actual band are joined by more dancers. It is a surreal performance at times but as it builds to a sugary crescendo with lots of visuals and dancers you cannot help but clap along at the energy and good vibes in the room.

Concert review: Super Junior are still super on stage

super junior us tour 2022

Super Junior World Tour Super Show 9: Road In Singapore Singapore Indoor Stadium Sept 3

After three years, seasoned K-pop boy band Super Junior finally returned to Singapore on Saturday and lived up to their concert tour title.

Leeteuk, Shindong, Eunhyuk, Donghae, Siwon, Kyuhyun, Ryeowook and Yesung, who are aged 34 to 39, put on a “super show” at the Singapore Indoor Stadium.

The group has nine active members, but Heechul no longer participates in live shows due to ongoing issues with an old injury.

Now 17 years into their debut, Super Junior reminded the 7,500-strong audience why they have lasted so long with their signature brand of synchronised dances, vocal prowess and excellent comedic timing.

The three-hour show was also a touching one, as fans cheered on Eunhyuk at his first concert appearance following the sudden death of his father in August.

Here are three highlights from the Super Junior World Tour Super Show 9: Road In Singapore.

1. Seasoned pros

Opening with a dramatic marionette-inspired dance number that had the guys’ hands tied to red strings, the octet showcased the top-notch polish and showmanship one expects of K-pop.

But throughout, they also demonstrated the ease and confidence of knowing they have nothing left to prove.

In segments where the group addressed the crowd, the men were utterly relaxed. They spoke directly to specific members of the audience, riffed on their own blunders, teased one another relentlessly and even referenced inside jokes knowing that most long-time fans would understand.

Unlike newer groups who perhaps still feel the pressure to be perfect, Super Junior were so comfortable and at home, it was akin to a meeting with old friends.

2. A variety show in a concert

super junior us tour 2022

Super Junior are not called “variety idols” for nothing. With members actively taking part in and hosting variety programmes in South Korea, one great strength of the group is just how funny they all are, which they use to full effect even in a concert.

Midway through, a video clip of the group dressed up in wigs and costumes to parody classical music greats like Beethoven and Vivaldi was played before they popped up onstage in the same get-up, to showcase a classical opera-esque mash-up of their songs Spy (2012), Rokkugo (2007) and Mamacita (2014).

Ending the segment was another video clip of the men – still in their elaborate period attire and hairpieces – playing a hilarious game of guess-the-song, which felt as if it could have been lifted from a variety programme.

3. Nostalgic K-pop throwback

For everyone who was a teenager in 2009, the addictive K-pop viral hit Sorry Sorry – an iconic song in second-generation K-pop – is a collective memory.

Watching the group perform that famous routine as the crowd stood up and cheered along loudly was a treat for anyone who remembers the early days of the Korean wave that would sweep the world.

And Super Junior served up plenty of nostalgic moments, like the heartwarming Believe (2005) from their debut album Twins.

Another beloved dance hit Mr Simple (2011) came early, as one of the opening segment’s numbers, while earworm Bonamana (2010) followed after Sorry Sorry in the concert’s final portion.

In July, SUPER JUNIOR released the single, ‘Mango’ , the title track off the first volume of their 11th full-length album ‘The Road: Keep On Going’. The five-track first volume features B-sides ‘Don’t Wait’, ‘My Wish’, ‘Everyday’ and ‘Always’, with member Eunhyuk having participated in writing the last track, with the second volume set to be released alongside a compilation album sometime later this year, per a press release.

The album is the highly anticipated sequel in the band’s ‘The Road’ series of records, which began in February with the single album ‘The Road: Winter for Spring’, led by the title track ‘Call’.

The group’s previous album, 2021’s ‘The Renaissance’, received a four-star review from NME , with writer Ruby C writing that “the range of musical colours and diversity on ‘The Renaissance’ showcase why the group have had their notable longevity and could even prompt ‘a revival of SUPER JUNIOR’.”

SUPER JUNIOR singer Siwon recently opened up about his past experiences with cyberbullying while reflecting on a UNICEF conference held in Malaysia in 2018, where the singer was asked how he would respond to cyberbullying as he may not be able to relate to the struggles of those who have been targeted by hateful comments. Admitting he had been initially taken aback, Siwon explained that he had been the target of cyberbullying before.

“However, what I came to realise is that people can talk about me online, but those words have no physical power over me,” Siwon said. “I told them to not be afraid, and if they’re ever exhausted or having a hard time, to let me know because I’ll be there.”
