College Football in Ireland Renews Rivalry for Notre Dame’s Travel Agency

By Daniel Libit

Anthony Travel Short's Travel Management

On Saturday, the curtain for the upcoming FBS college football season will rise with a Big Ten matchup between Nebraska and Northwestern at Aviva Stadium in Dublin.

The event, dubbed the Ireland Classic, is set to take place after the previous two attempts at holding the across-the-pond series were stymied by COVID-19. In 2020, the Classic between Notre Dame and Navy was canceled, while last year’s scheduled contest between Illinois and Nebraska was preemptively relocated to Champaign, Ill.

John Anthony, the company’s eponymous founder and enduring CEO, describes the canceled 2020 Classic as the “greatest event that nobody ever saw.” Among its planned pageantry, the game was supposed to play host to ESPN College GameDay’s first production on foreign soil.

Instead of a multimillion-dollar boon, the occasion commenced what became one of the largest refund operations in the Anthony Travel’s 33-year history, with at least 10,000 people having made game-related purchases through the company.

All this has only raised the stakes for an event that is at the center of Anthony Travel’s growth ambitions: converting college sports followers into general travelers.

Of the 30,000-plus fans expected to be in attendance Saturday, Anthony Travel estimates that as many as 16,000 of them will have in some way engaged the company’s services as part of their trip. That involvement could range from the simple booking of plane tickets to purchasing an eight-day, three-city, all-inclusive Irish tour package.

“This is just the next and biggest evolution in that entire lifecycle, if you will, because it’s a global world, and universities tout their global presence,” said Anthony, who has spent much of the past month in Dublin, participating in logistics meetings in anticipation of this weekend’s festivities.

This year’s Classic heralds an expected return to a degree of normalcy for college sports travel, which has dealt with constant disruption for the past two and a half years. For the two companies that have come to dominate the college sports travel industry—Anthony Travel and the Iowa-based, family-owned Short’s Travel Management—this forthcoming academic year will showcase their diverging approaches to both servicing and profiting from the space.

Indeed, where COVID once appeared to be an existential threat to the travel agencies, Anthony says the pandemic has ultimately solidified its business: Over the last 12 months, 47 athletic departments have renewed their contracts, and 10 new departments have signed deals.

“Our value is at the highest when somebody is in a time of need,” Anthony said.

The Ireland Classic builds off Anthony Travel’s long-running endeavor—pun intended—to pursue college sports fan travel, in addition to handling the nitty-gritty of moving teams between competitions.

To that end, many of Anthony Travel’s deals with athletic departments have included specific terms granting the company the rights to serve as the school’s exclusive fan travel agency. Anthony Travel also separately engages in specific fan-travel arrangements with university alumni and booster organizations, as well as with main campuses or entire university systems to service faculty and staff travel needs.

While it has continued to grow its university operations, there have been hiccups. Earlier this spring, the University of Pittsburgh’s faculty protested the school’s pandemic-era policy requiring all university travelers to book through either Anthony Travel or Concur, the online expense management tool. In April, after several faculty leaders complained to the school’s administration about their experiences with Anthony Travel, the school backed off the policy to allow for alternative booking options in the event university travelers can find a better rate.

“From an Anthony Travel standpoint, service levels have returned to what they’d deem a high standard,” a company spokesperson told Sportico .

While Anthony Travel has persistently tried to grow beyond the athletic department, its main competitor has kept its ambitions in check.

Short’s Travel Management, founded in 1946, made its foray into college sports in 2003, when it won the NCAA travel management contract for all the association’s end-of-season championships. Two years later, the company began approaching individual schools about regular-season travel needs, which now forms the core of the business.

Then, about a decade ago, Short’s made a strategic decision to focus more on the corporate client side, thereby ceding much of the college sports industry to Anthony Travel. Ryan Dohmen, president of Short’s charter airlines division, attributes Anthony Travel’s customer boom in the late aughts and early 2010s to his company’s unilateral disengagement. Short’s eventually returned to the intercollegiate fray about five years ago and, following the pandemic, made college sports its dedicated focus.

“We decided that the corporate side of the business wasn’t where we wanted it to be,” Dohmen said.

Short’s currently holds around 70 travel management contracts with athletic departments but, unlike Anthony Travel, has declined to pursue fan or other kinds of university-related travel.

Last year, the company made waves when it won back the Florida State athletic travel account from Anthony Travel. Rosey Murton, FSU’s chief procurement officer, said that amid the financial pinch of COVID-19, the school was motivated to find cost savings, particularly on charter flights, which it did by moving its business.

Contrary to the Anthony Travel norm of physically embedding its employees into athletic departments, Short’s handles almost all of its university accounts remotely, believing that this enables the company to attract a better talent pool.

“One of our slogans is we were remote before remote was cool,” Dohmen said.

In the case of FSU, however, Short’s agreed to maintain an on-site agent, per the school’s request.

Anthony Travel contends that, even with advancements in technology, the constant contingencies involved in college team travel are still best tended to by having an agent down the hall from coaches and athletic directors. Anthony says that since just the summer, a dozen of its schools have requested an additional on-site agent as part of their ongoing relationships.

For now, the travel agencies are in D-I customer acquisition mode, creating some notable jostling in SEC country. Last year, Anthony Travel announced a deal to serve as the conference office’s official travel partner and this past January won the competitive bid for Vanderbilt athletics, which had previously been a Short’s client. At the time, the Commodores gave Anthony Travel its sixth SEC program, along with Arkansas, Auburn, Texas A&M, Mississippi State and Missouri. Six months later, however, Short’s pried Missouri away from Anthony Travel; Short’s also holds the contracts for Mississippi and South Carolina.

Florida and Georgia currently handle their team travel in-house. Tennessee uses World Travel, Kentucky uses a local agency, while LSU and Alabama both employ the corporate travel management company, Christopherson.

In the Big Ten, Anthony Travel holds sway, servicing every conference athletic department aside from Minnesota’s—a loyal Short’s client. Anthony Travel also contracts with anticipated 2024 Big Ten members USC and UCLA, and rumored hopefuls Stanford and Oregon.

Anthony told Sportico the consolidation of wealth in college sports will likely guide his company’s future partnerships. In time, the company may see fit to limit its contracts to only certain kinds of college football powers.

“We want to be where it makes sense,” Anthony said. And where it makes sense might include more overseas destinations.

Anthony told Sportico that he has been in serious discussions with at least one other foreign city about hosting an early college football matchup, in addition to the one in Ireland. He declined to provide additional details.

Tips for Packers fans planning trips to Brazil for season opener

GREEN BAY, Wis. (WBAY) - A burgeoning fan base for the Packers already in Brazil and we all know the green and gold faithful here at home travel very well.

Agencies like Fox World Travel already getting phone calls from fans ready to plan a trip to Brazil to cheer on the pack. They say there’s a lot to do before traveling to the world’s fifth largest country like finding the best beaches or practicing your Portuguese. But safety should also be top of mind.

“Just like if you were going to New York, Chicago, or any of these places, you need to be vigilant in regard to your safety. We tell people to keep all of their travel documents in a safety deposit box. Or if you don’t happen to have a safety deposit box in your room, ask the front desk to hold your documents,” said Rose Gray, the Business Relationship Director for Fox World Travel.

John Schmidt has been selling packers tickets for over 25 years and isn’t new when it comes international as well. One thing he made clear is to look out for fake tickets.

“They just got to be watching for scams. People got to know who they’re buying from,” said Schmidt. “Buy from a broker that’s licensed or be careful on craigslist and all that cause especially being an overseas event. If it gets to be a big game where the ticket prices are high, they’re going to try and scam them and make money off of them.”

If you plan to travel make sure documents, like your passport, are up-to-date.

Vital Link for Travelers in Elm Grove is Officially Closed

W HEELING, W.Va. (WTRF) — The Monument Place Bridge on National Road in Elm Grove is now officially closed to all traffic which will make travel difficult for many people that rely on that bridge daily. The bridge was closed due to the need for significant repairs and it will remain closed until November 29th of this year.

The Wheeling Police Department is reminding drivers to stay alert during the closure as they are expecting traffic to increase on both ends of the bridge.

With the bridge being closed many travelers will need to plan to take alternate routes and follow the detour signs that are posted at the bridge.

The Wheeling Police department says they will be monitoring traffic in the area closely to ensure traffic laws are being obeyed.

”It’s going to increase traffic in that area but what we don’t want is for folks to panic. Give yourselves enough time to travel. Make sure that you have enough time to get where you’re going, leave early, follow the rules of the road. Slow down, back off, hang up, pay attention to what’s happening in front of you as you’re driving.” Josh Sanders – Wheeling Police Department

With the area already being a high crash zone, the Wheeling Police Department says they will be handing out citations for anyone that is not obeying traffic laws both near the bridge and on alternate routes.

Alternate Route: Use US 40, National Road, to Interstate 70 eastbound and westbound to Exit 2B Washington Avenue then Exit 4 to Interstate 70.

This was the first time, the DoD Warrior Games took place at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex, which has been generously donated for this purpose. If this information feels familiar, it’s because the 2021 Department of Defense Warrior Games were initially slated to be held at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex last September. Unfortunately, they had to be canceled due to the Delta variant.

During 2022 and 2023, the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex has been selected to host the US Youth Soccer (USYS) National Championships. This major event was held in July 2023. The event crowned boys and girls champions in each of USYS’ seven age divisions (13U-19U)

The Biden administration recruits 15 states to help enforce airline consumer laws

Airlines consumer rights.

The Biden administration is enlisting the help of officials in 15 states to enforce consumer-protection laws covering airline travelers , a power that by law is limited to the federal government.

The U.S. Department of Transportation said Tuesday that the states, which include California, New York and Illinois, will help ensure that government enforcement activities keep up with a current boom in air travel.

Under an agreement announced by Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg , state attorney general offices will be able to investigate complaints about airline service. If they believe an airline violated the law or is refusing to cooperate with investigators, the states could refer cases to the Transportation Department for enforcement.

In return, the Transportation Department, or DOT, will give the states access to its consumer-complaint system and train state employees about federal consumer laws covering airlines .

“This is a partnership that will greatly improve DOT's capacity to hold airlines accountable and to protect passengers,” Buttigieg told reporters.

Buttigieg pointed to travelers whose flights are canceled and then must wait days for another flight or pay more to fly home on another airline. “Things like that are a violation of passenger rights, and we are seeing far too many cases of that,” he said.

Other states whose officials signed the “memorandum of understanding” with the Transportation Department are: Colorado, Connecticut, Maine, Maryland, Michigan, Nevada, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island and Wisconsin, plus the District of Columbia, the Northern Mariana Islands and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Buttigieg, a Democrat, repeatedly cast the agreement as bipartisan, but only two of the state officials who signed on are Republicans. Buttigieg indicated his department hopes to recruit more states.

Under U.S. law, the federal government alone regulates consumer-protection laws covering airlines. The carriers are not legally required to respond to state investigations.

Consumer advocates have pushed to expand enforcement power to the states. However, both the full House and a key Senate committee declined to include that proposal in pending legislation that covers the Federal Aviation Administration, part of the Transportation Department.

“During the pandemic, we actually got more complaints about airline traffic than any other topic, and it was frustrating” because the state had no authority to investigate the complaints, Colorado Attorney General Philip Weiser said.

Weiser argued that Congress should give states power to enforce airline consumer-protection laws, “but I have to say, we didn't wait for Congress to act.”

Consumer groups praised the agreement while saying they would rather see Congress write into law the power of states to regulate consumer-protection rules.

“This is the next best thing," said William McGee, an aviation expert at the American Economic Liberties Project, which opposes industry consolidation. “We don’t look at this as a threat to DOT’s authority. We look at it as the states assisting DOT, which doesn’t have the staffing to handle all the complaints they get.”

Airlines for America, a trade group representing the largest U.S. carriers, said it works with state and national groups “to constantly improve the customer experience for all passengers. We appreciate the role of state attorneys general and their work on behalf of consumers, and we look forward to continue working with them."

'Expensive in every way': What travelers should expect this summer

Summer travel in 2024 will be "expensive in every way," said Katharine Nohr. And she should know.

She's planning a two-week adventure to Europe in June, which starts with a marathon flight from Honolulu to Zurich, where she'll speak at a conference. Then she's hopscotching across Europe – to Vienna, then on to the Olympics. Nohr made plans to be in Nantes, France, to watch a soccer game, in Lille for basketball, and in Paris for gymnastics, boxing and swimming.

Check out   Elliott Confidential , the newsletter the travel industry doesn't want you to read. Each issue is filled with breaking news, deep insights, and exclusive strategies for becoming a better traveler. But don't tell anyone!

All told, it'll set her back five figures despite her best efforts, which include flying economy class and staying in the lowest-priced hotels.

"The trip is pricey, even with my efforts to economize," said Nohr, an attorney from Honolulu. "But it's a once-in-my-life adventure."

Flying cars are coming! Here's how they could change the way you travel.

'Flying feels different': Here's how air travel has changed recently

Summer travelers are pursuing exciting, expensive vacations

Nohr is part of a wave of travelers who are making big plans for this summer. The itineraries are exciting – and expensive.

Pretty much every barometer of travel intent is up for the summer travel season. Inflation and unemployment are low, and consumer sentiment and curiosity are high, fueling an unprecedented interest in travel.

"Bookings are rising," said Susan Sherren, who runs Couture Trips , a travel agency. "Unfortunately, hotel, tour and air prices are not falling. So if you plan on hitting the road this summer, make sure you are willing to splash some cash."

Travel companies say they're overwhelmed with summer reservations.

"The travel economy is booming," said Joe Ialacci, owner of Yacht Hampton Boating Club , a company that rents yachts in Sag Harbor, New York. He's seeing a 40% increase in rentals this summer compared with last year as Americans shift some of their vacation dollars to domestic destinations.

Prices aren't the only thing trending higher. People's expectations for their summer vacation are also higher than at any time since the pandemic, said Sangeeta Sadarangani, CEO of Crossing , a multinational travel agency headquartered in London.

"They're embracing the unknown," she said.

And one of the great unknowns is travel prices. How much higher will they be?

What will prices be like this summer?

It depends on where you're going. There's good news if you're traveling within the U.S.: Flights and hotels are a little less expensive than last summer . But they're rising elsewhere. Here's the breakdown:

  • Airfares are mixed. Domestic round-trip airfares for summer will peak at $315 a ticket, according to the travel platform Hopper . Flights to Europe are cheaper, too. They've fallen 10% from last year to $882. But flights to South America are up 2% and flights to Canada have risen 7%. You'll pay an average of $708 to fly south of the border and $419 to head north.
  • U.S. hotel rates are down. Domestically, they're about the same as last year at an average of $206 a night.
  • Car rental prices are rising. Average domestic car rental rates are up only 3% this summer to $42 a day on a four-day rental, according to Hopper.

But you can avoid the high prices with a little strategic planning, experts say.

What to avoid this summer

American travelers are becoming more predictable in their summer vacation choices, said John Lovell, president of Travel Leaders Group . Immediately after the pandemic, they embarked on "revenge" vacations to far-flung locations. Now they're returning to more conventional vacations.

"We continue to see U.S. travelers heading back to the more traditional locations across Europe this year, like London, Rome, Athens and Munich," he said.

There are places that will be exceptionally busy – and exceptionally pricey – this summer.

  • Paris during the Olympics. The Olympic Games are in Paris this summer. Rooms are more than double the normal rates , which is typical of the Olympics. Paris is already crowded with tourists during the summer, so you can probably imagine what it will be like with the Olympics. Zut, alors!
  • Taylor Swift is touring Europe this summer. Prices will be higher and the crowds will be denser. "If you aren't planning to attend one of her concerts, I recommend planning around those European cities when she's there," said Betsy Ball, co-founder of Euro Travel Coach . (Want to know if your schedules overlap? Here's Taylor Swift's concert schedule .)
  • Other big summer events. Even if you steer clear of Taylor and the Olympics, you're still not out of the woods. There's the UEFA Euro 2024 football tournament in Germany in June. There's the Tour de France in July, which begins in Florence and finishes in Nice. France is also hosting the Paralympic Games in August and September in Paris, Nice, Marseille and Bordeaux.

Air travel smells worse than ever. Here's how to fix it.

Pay less to fly: New strategies for finding cheap airfares now

When is the best time to book a 2024 summer vacation?

Because this is going to be a busy season, the sooner you book, the better. Hopper recommends buying your plane tickets two to three months before your departure for domestic flights, and for international – well, it's probably too late to get that rock-bottom fare. If you're reading this in April, you can still find something for late August or early September, according to its airfare experts.

As always, you can save money by booking a flight for midweek instead of on the weekend – and, of course, by keeping far, far away from the big travel holidays like Memorial Day, the Fourth of July and Labor Day.

Also, if you're going overseas, remember the holiday calendar is different there. For example, half of Europe shuts down in August for summer vacation. It's worth a look-up, otherwise, you could face some real disappointments.

Strategies for traveling better during the summer

One tactic that consistently works is splitting your getaway into two sections. Take that required summer vacation with your family somewhere less expensive during the high season. Then, wait until shoulder season for the big trip.

That's what Ross Copas, a retired electrician from Tweed, Canada, is doing during the summer of 2024. It's a road trip across the northern U.S. by motorcycle – New York to Washington state, and then back east through Canada.

Then he's heading to Amsterdam in September for a 23-day European river cruise. He said the late-summer getaway will be costly, but he doubts fares will fall anytime soon. "So price be damned," he said.

Actually, that's pretty smart. I took the same cruise on Viking River Cruises many years ago, and it was worth every penny.

With hotel rates rising in some places this summer, this is the right time to consider alternatives. Monica Fish, a writer from Glen Rock, New Jersey, is headed to Ireland to catch one of Taylor Swift's performances. She said hotel rooms in Dublin are overpriced, if they're even available. But Fish found an affordable vacation rental.

"We just had to book it farther in advance than we normally would," she said.

Go ahead, follow the crowds this summer

I think it's fine to follow the crowds this summer. I'll be doing it. I'm planning to rent an apartment for a month in Switzerland with Blueground, a long-term apartment rental company. Then I'm crashing on a friend's sofa in Spain, then heading to Sweden to see other friends and visiting my brother in Finland. Yes, travel writers know people everywhere .

But don't follow the crowds off a cliff. There are places even I won't go. I might take the four-hour train trip from Zurich to Paris in June to check out my favorite patisseries, but I wouldn't go anywhere near the City of Lights during the Summer Games in July unless I made a reservation a long time ago.

And Taylor Swift? Puh-leeze. I'm more of a jazz guy.

Griner, WNBA travel and charters: What's allowed? What could change?

Phoenix Mercury center Brittney Griner was harassed by a social media personality at Dallas Fort Worth International Airport on Saturday, once again bringing the issue of WNBA travel to the forefront.

Griner's safety during air travel for road games has been a concern because of her circumstances: Griner was detained in Russia from February 2022 to December 2022 after Russian customs officials said they found vape canisters with cannabis oil in her luggage. She was freed in a prisoner exchange to which some people objected. Griner's travel provides a logistics challenge that the Mercury and the league are apparently still working out.

The WNBA has never faced anything like Griner's situation: a player reacclimating to her job having been in a high-profile global diplomatic situation. And at 6-foot-9, Griner is recognizable wherever she goes.

Saturday's incident also prompted more calls from Griner's agent, the WNBA players' union and several players leaguewide to move to all charter flights for players' health and safety. But for now, other than Griner's situation and some other exceptions -- including Thursday's news that teams this season are allowed to fly on a public chartering service called JSX -- WNBA teams will continue to be on commercial flights. Here's a look at the league's travel situation.

How are teams allowed to travel in the WNBA?

The WNBA, founded in 1997, has always traveled mostly via commercial air. That is paid for by the individual franchises during the regular season, while the league reimburses teams for travel expenses during the playoffs. There have been certain upgrades since Cathy Engelbert became commissioner in 2019.

Starting that season, Engelbert allowed for the possibility of charter travel during the playoffs for teams that had just a day between games while crossing more than one time zone. Last year, the league moved to all-charter travel for the WNBA Finals.

This season, the league will pay for charters when teams play regular-season games on back-to-back days that require air travel, for the visiting team in the Commissioner's Cup final and for all rounds of the playoffs.

Other than that, travel has to be commercial, as stated in the 2020 WNBA collective bargaining agreement: "All air travel provided by the Team (including, but not limited to, travel between games) will be, if available on the Team-chosen flights at the time of booking, premium economy (or similar enhanced coach fare). Teams are required to reimburse players for the application cost of obtaining Global Entry membership as part of the Trusted Travelers Program of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security."

Engelbert has said on numerous occasions that traveling to all games via charter flights at this point isn't financially feasible for the league as a whole. And individual teams are prohibited from going to all charter flights even if they decide they can afford it because it is deemed a significant competitive advantage in the 12-team league. To that end, the New York Liberty were fined $500,000 last year after using charters in 2021 against league policy.

Player safety while traveling should be at the forefront. People following with cameras saying wild remarks is never acceptable. Excessive harassment. Our team nervously huddled in a corner unsure how to move about. We demand better. — Brianna Turner (@_Breezy_Briii) June 10, 2023

Engelbert has also said many times that no one wants charter travel any more than she does, but she won't jeopardize the league's financial health for it. Several WNBA owners and general managers have acknowledged more gradual moves make sense.

"My hope is the league may open the door and say you can charter five in 2024, you pick which one," one WNBA executive told ESPN. "And we gradually move to full charter."

What else do we know about teams using JSX as a travel option?

Teams are allowed to fly JSX with certain protocols in place, league sources told ESPN this week. According to its website, JSX is a "hop-on jet service that's faster on the ground and more comfortable in the air." It's "a taste of what chartering will be like," one league executive told ESPN.

But JSX isn't available in most WNBA cities, and unlike charters, the airline's flights have preset routes and times, which the league has told teams they cannot change.

JSX usage varies by team, league sources told ESPN, depending on factors such as availability of flights and preexisting travel booked. Mercury guard Shey Peddy's Instagram video from last month included a shot of the interior of a JSX plane from when the team took a JSX flight to Los Angeles for its season opener.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Shey Peddy (@sheyp11)

JSX planes can hold about 30 people, providing teams the option to buy out an entire flight. Passengers access planes through private terminals and can easily check their bags before boarding. Perhaps most convenient for teams, JSX advises customers to check in no later than 20 minutes before a domestic flight, and per JSX's website, each plane is equipped with business-class legroom.

Tickets for JSX standard routes for the most part are not drastically more expensive than commercial flights. But the price goes up for "created routes," which might be one of the things that is allowed for the Mercury because of Griner's unique security situation.

Do WNBA teams travel with security?

The league as a whole and several teams independently elevated security measures heading into the 2023 season. New York Liberty coach Sandy Brondello and Minnesota Lynx coach Cheryl Reeve revealed publicly that their teams are now traveling with security detail, something several other franchises confirmed to ESPN they have incorporated this year as well. That was allowed by the league lifting travel-party-number restrictions, sources told ESPN.

As of the start of this season, teams on the road can also coordinate additional "away market-local security" with the home squad.

Should we expect a leaguewide change to travel midseason?

This is highly unlikely to happen. There might be incremental moves to more charters next season, as there have been since Engelbert took over. But as she has stated many times, a wholesale change to all charter flights right now isn't feasible.

The issue of WNBA travel is on a perpetual news cycle. It comes up every time there is any difficulty in WNBA travel, including airport delays. It's an issue talked about frequently by some of the high-profile players, prominent agents such as Griner's representatives at Wasserman, and the union. The situation Griner faced at DFW prompted familiar responses from those who are convinced charters can be done sooner rather than later, despite what Engelbert and certain owners insist.

The situation is more complicated by the fact other owners are ready now to charter because they can afford it. The league has said that would create a competitive advantage issue among WNBA teams. If all parties -- the league, the board of governors and the union -- were to agree to make any significant travel changes before the next CBA, that could be done via attaching a letter to the current CBA. But the league would not comment on whether such a process would require a majority or unanimous vote by the board of governors.

The concept of "competitive advantage" can be tricky. Does a team potentially have competitive advantages based on the city it is in, the arena it plays in and the practice facilities it has? Yes, and those are all factors for drawing free agents. But travel is an issue the league has stood firm on regulating for fiscal and competitive advantage reasons.

There are no longer any WNBA players who finished college with no American pro league to go to. The oldest active player is 41-year-old Diana Taurasi , who was in high school when the WNBA launched in 1997. The majority of today's players also went to Power 5 conference schools where they were used to flying charter for college games due to Title IX. Players come to the WNBA now with different expectations than they used to.

But considering Engelbert's firm statements on this and the fact that it will be on the table for the next CBA negotiations, a full move to charters doesn't seem in the cards right away.

Take precautions in Hale‘iwa from dengue

HONOLULU–The Hawai’i Department of Health (DOH) has confirmed a travel-related dengue virus case in Hale’iwa, O’ahu. Upon investigation, DOH found conditions that could increase the risk of transmission. Vector control teams have responded and will continue to be active in the Hale’iwa area. The public is urged to take additional precautions to protect themselves from mosquito bites and to stop mosquitoes from breeding.

The area where the case was reported experiences high traffic of visitors and tourists. Highly dense populations of Aedes albopictus mosquito, a vector of dengue virus, were identified around the residence where the case was found and the surrounding area. Initial vector control response resulted in a marked reduction of mosquitoes around the case residence. DOH will continue to monitor mosquito numbers in this area and take additional measures as needed. Signage will be posted to educate the public on how to protect themselves and prevent transmission.
