James Allan takes 3rd Title and Order of Merit

James Allan Crowns Stellar Year with Third Seasonal Victory at The Matchroom Tour Championship

Chelmsford’s James Allan has become the highest annual earner in PGA EuroPro Tour history, having triumphed in The Matchroom Tour Championship.

He is joined by Michael Stewart, Dermot McElroy, Jack Davidson and Josh Hilleard in progressing to the Challenge Tour.

Leaderboard  x  Order of Merit

When James Allan  recorded his second win  of the campaign at Mannings Heath Golf & Wine Estate in August, his presence on next season’s Challenge Tour was confirmed.

The 28-year-old was the runaway leader throughout the year, and his ever-reliable golf game stood up to so many questions.

Moments after his second triumph, Allan was quick to admit that the goal was to finish the season in style and close out the summer as the PGA EuroPro Tour’s number one player.

Fast-forward 77 days, or exactly 11 weeks, and that ambition would transition into reality as Allan lifted The Matchroom Tour Championship trophy alongside the coveted Order of Merit award.

“It feels absolutely amazing. It really is an honour to win the PGA EuroPro Tour Order of Merit and see some amazing names on that trophy.

“To be the highest earner in the tour’s history is a little bonus, but I am over the moon to have capped it off because I really wanted it this week.”

The PGA EuroPro Tour has developed renowned talents such as Tommy Fleetwood, Louis Oosthuizen, Tyrrell Hatton, Aaron Rai and Marcus Armitage to name just a few.

Allan is destined to follow their pathway towards the highest standard of golf and experience what looks certain to be a glittering career as a touring professional.

Across the 16 events, amidst four months of gruelling travelling and living out of rental bases, Allan has been a shining star – elevating himself above the rest.

To say the standard on the PGA EuroPro Tour is high would be an unjust understatement; there are a multitude of players who can compete at the successive stages.

The Top 5 supporting Global Golf4 Cancer

Ultimately, what Allan did incredibly well was grab each opportunity as it presented itself – best demonstrated by his three seasonal titles.

“What I’m really proud of is the fact that each time I’ve had a chance to win, I’ve taken it.

“My game and mind stood up to those tests and I feel like I may have made it look reasonably easy at times, but I was battling a little this week with my swing.

“That’s a testament to the work I’ve put in and what I have been doing over the last year really.”

As a professional sportsperson who makes a living off individual effort, golf can be the loneliest game in the world at times.

A sequence of poor decisions can seriously hamper tournament performances, which is why Allan is so grateful for the team he has carefully and methodically selected to be around him.

“You’re out there on your own and it can be brutal. My good mate Tom was meant to be here but couldn’t make it last minute.

“I had Gabs [Allan’s long-term girlfriend and most ardent supporter] and a few friends out there; to be able to see their faces, you just know you’re not alone.

“The big thing is, it’s more than just me. So many people have put so much time and effort into helping me arrive at where I am now.

“A big part of that is feeling like it’s not just me out there, you know? It’s team effort.”

When we watch golfers in their natural climate, we fail to see the work that goes on behind the scenes and just how many people contribute to the individual’s success.

However, as they progress past the levels of professional golf, the competition becomes stiffer – which means the team’s efforts will need to grow in prominence too.

For the Allan team the labour starts now, as there is one more goal that needs to be attained before the season fully closes.

“I can’t wait to be on the Challenge Tour, but there’s Q-School yet and I’m certainly looking at the DP World Tour.

The highly impressive golfer expertly negotiated the first stage of Q-School and is now preparing for the second stage, plus whatever opportunities follow from there.

“There are so many good players on the Challenge Tour; if I can skip that phase, then I’m absolutely interested in that.

“It was nice to come to Lough Erne  – not stress-free, because I still wanted to perform and I have my own goals – but in terms of the Challenge Tour next year, I knew I was secure, and it allowed me to free up and play.

“This is the first time I’ve gone to Q-School with that same kind of feeling – I’m over the moon to have this card in my back pocket.”

After 15 events, three victories, a runner-up finish, one Top 3, six Top 10s and 11 Top 25s, there could be a celebration or two for Allan and his team after this unprecedented campaign.

“We’ll have a few beers, definitely,” he said with a grin.

“I’ll meet up with friends and I might have a few plans next week, so we’ll see how it goes.”

Jamie Rutherford wins EuroPro Tour’s Matchroom Tour Championship at Slaley Hall

Jamie Rutherford won the 2021 Matchroom Tour Championship at Slaley Hall to secure top spot in the season-long order of merit following a dramatic final day of the season.

Jamie went into the day two off the lead and ninth in the order of merit, and knew it would take a gutsy performance to seal a top-five finish and a place on next season’s Challenge Tour.

The Knebworth golfer went out in 35 before making four straight birdies from 10-13 to move to nine under-par and one shot clear of Jack McDonald and Calum Fyfe. He made a huge par save on 17 from a horrible lie before a bogey on 18 left him with a wait with Jack eyeing a win or playoff.

At the final hole of the season, Jack’s approach came up short of the green, leaving him needing to chip in for the win or make a par to make the playoff. He would make bogey to give Jamie the win and a Challenge Tour card for 2022.

Dan Brown (Romanby Golf Club) sealed his card in fourth place in the order of merit after a dramatic final hole – where he laid up before making a clutch par putt to take a tie for second place at Slaley and claim a spot in the top five in the order of merit.

Oliver Farr wins EuroPro Order of Merit

Published: 18 October 2013 Last updated: 18 October 2013

europro tour golf order of merit

Oliver Farr won the PGA EuroPro Tour Championship, and with it the 2013 season Order of Merit, after finishing 13-under-par for his 54 holes at Prince’s Golf Club.

Daniel Gavins was one behind in second place, which also confirmed his position as runner-up on the tour rankings. Paul Reed and James Watts finished the tournament tied for third on 10-under-par.

The top five on the Order of Merit are awarded Challenge Tour cards for 2014. George Woolgar, who was guaranteed a top-five finish before the Tour Championship, came third with Dave Coupland and Paul McKechnie also progressing to Europe’s second-tier Tour.

Farr (Worcester Golf & Country Club) shot a final-round 67 to beat overnight leader Gavins (De Vere Oulton Hall) by one and in doing so also claimed the Order of Merit title.

“The last two days I have really controlled the ball well and put some great scores in,” said Farr. “It was nice to do that under a lot of pressure. I wasn’t quite sure of my Challenge Tour card for next year but it is brilliant to get it.

“The Challenge Tour card only really occurred to me on the 18th. I was focussing on the last round. I came here this week to just play this tournament as it is and I did that. It only really came into my mind on the 18th tee, then I thought I could win the Order of Merit.

“Playing on the Challenge Tour is something to really, really look forward to. I have played some Challenge Tour events this year and I feel comfortable on there. There is a little step up but I will prepare myself and get some good practice in over the winter to get ready for next year.”

The Welshman led for much of the back nine after shooting five birdies on the first 11 holes. A birdie for Gavins on the last left Farr with a short but nervy putt for victory, which he calmly made to collect a winner’s cheque of £15,000 and a brand new Motocaddy S3 Pro.

Richard Wallis finished sixth on the Order of Merit, missing out on the top five by just £69. However, if any of the top five earn a Challenge or European Tour card via the European Tour Qualifying School, he will receive their category.

Marcus Armitage collected the Rookie Of The Year trophy after finishing ninth on the Order of Merit.

A two-hour highlights package featuring TG Instruction Editor Kit Alexander will be broadcast at 8pm on Tuesday, October 29 on Sky Sports 2 HD, repeated four times the following day.

EuroPro Tour Announces Monday Qualifiers Are Returning

Players have a chance to play in the third-tier tournaments and potentially improve their Order of Merit standings

Close-up of a driver hitting a ball off a tee

Following a successful trial period last year , it has been announced that the PGA EuroPro Tour will have Monday Qualifying in 2022. Each event on the Tour will host Monday Qualifying, except the season-ending Wright-Morgan Championship at Clevedon Golf Club.

Each week, the top four are granted eligibility to that week’s standard three-day tournament and the chance to win prize money and Order of Merit standings, depending on the membership option they take out. For EuroPro Tour members, entrance to Monday Qualifying costs £75, with non-members charged £125. Anyone who qualifies can then opt for temporary or affiliate membership.

Players opting for the former face an additional £50 charge, and any winnings won’t count towards Order of Merit standings. However, those opting for the latter will qualify for Order of Merit standings, albeit at the cost of an additional £445. Nevertheless, the incentive is the chance for players to improve their playing category, which can lead to qualification for the higher-profile and potentially more lucrative Matchroom Tour Championship and Challenge Tour.

PGA EuroPro Tour CEO Dan Godding said: “We are thrilled to see Monday qualifiers returning, and we hope to see successful players push on and have an excellent tournament too. To be able to offer this service will undoubtedly bolster the Tour’s reputation, and it will also offer golfers another chance of chasing their dream – those who fell short at Q-School should be very interested by the reintroduction.”

The PGA EuroPro Tour is one of four third-tier Satellite Tours in Europe. The others are the Alps Tour, the Pro Tour and the Nordic Golf League. The Tours sit one level beneath the second-tier Challenge Tour, with the DP World Tour at the top of the pyramid.

The first Monday Qualifying will take place on 24 May for the Cubefunder Championship at Harleywood Golf Club in Marlow, Buckinghamshire.
