Your Go-To Guide for the Best Things to Do in Fort Wayne, Indiana

F ort Wayne isn’t just Indiana’s second-largest city; it’s a vibrant hub with hidden gems and surprises at every corner. With a population tipping over a quarter-million, this city punches above its weight in experiences that draw you in. Whether you’re eager to trace your ancestry or swoon over the craftsmanship in Vera Bradley creations—Fort Wayne’s spirit of innovation is irresistible. Wondering what to do here? I’ve explored and have top-notch recommendations for the best things to do in Fort Wayne!

Step Back in Time with Genealogy

The  ACPL Genealogy Center , a treasure trove with the nation’s largest public record database, is on the second floor of the Allen County Public Library. Imagine revealing your family’s past with guided support from real-life genealogy wizards—yep, that’s what you’ll find here, at no cost!

Picture rows upon rows of items, including a vast digital collection that feels like you’re walking through history with every click.

Get ready for this—there’s an amazing collection dedicated to Abraham Lincoln at this library, too, featuring everything from original Civil War diaries to artwork. And the best part? You can gaze at these pieces for free! Plus, if you’re deep into family trees and don’t want to pack up at closing time, the center’s staff will gladly hold your spot overnight. That’s what I call Midwest hospitality!

Uncover Fort Wayne’s Artistic Heart

The Fort Wayne Museum of Art [ FWMOA ] is a visual haven with its gleaming Chihuly glass centerpiece. Here, art buffs can revel in a mix of permanent showstoppers and visiting exhibitions that range from contemporary art to interactive children’s displays. Though small in square footage, FWMOA’s impressive collection can awe the most seasoned art critics.

And for nature enthusiasts, there’s the  Foellinger-Freimann Botanical Conservatory , a place I can never resist during my Fort Wayne visits. Journey through indoor garden spaces—from the lush tropics and cascading waterfall to arid deserts—all under one roof. The seasonal butterfly exhibit is especially enchanting, leaving visitors like myself completely enchanted.

Savor Fort Wayne’s Flavorful Bites

Foodies, rejoice! Fort Wayne’s culinary scene boasts everything from award-winning breweries to farm-fresh dining experiences. For a taste of local favorites, be sure to check out:

  • Junk Ditch Brewing Company for comforting Chuck Roast Gnocchi
  • The Hoppy Gnome’s unique Kimchi Chicken Fingers
  • Proximo’s flavorful Carnita Benedict
  • Tolon’s mouth-watering Duck Fat Frites
  • Don Chava’s Mexican Grill and their Arroz Con Pollo to die for
  • Nawa’s aromatic Massaman Chicken Curry
  • Dash In’s classic Avocado Toast
  • Zesto Ice Cream’s iconic Chocolate Dipped Cone

And that’s just the beginning! So many more spots cater to all kinds of palates and cravings. For restaurant recommendations, including what to order, see our restaurant guide to Fort Wayne eateries.

Savor the Flavors and Artistry of Fort Wayne

The city of Fort Wayne is teeming with up-to-date attractions. From the Northern Indiana Beer Trail—where you can taste-test local brews—to the Seasonal Apple Trail’s luscious caramel apples, there’s something for every palate.

Pro Tip: My faves are Hop River Brewing and Junk Ditch.

Don’t even get me started on the  Public Art Trail , which showcases stunning murals and sculptures, solidifying Fort Wayne as the go-to place for creative souls.

Then there’s the highly anticipated  Vera Bradley Outlet Sale , a five-day extravaganza each April where fashion meets frugal. This is no ordinary sale—it’s an epic treasure hunt where dazzling patterns and accessories are up for grabs at jaw-dropping prices. But be quick! The VIP tickets for the first few days are hotter than a Hoosier summer. “Organized madness” best describes this event.

Rally Behind Fort Wayne’s Home Teams

Looking for thrills and spills? Catch the TinCaps , the minor league (High-A Affiliate) of the San Diego Padres, swinging for the fences at Parkview Field—a stadium so great, TripAdvisor crowned it top dog in 2017. Want to level up your game day? Snag some box seats for that luxury feel.

While on the topic of legends and TinCaps (who the team is named for and Fort Wayne’s most famous figure), there’s the Johnny Appleseed Festival—think delicious bites and historical reenactments—a perfect nod to the man who left a legacy of orchards across the region.

And then there are the  Indiana Mad Ants —basketball’s finest and farm team to the Indiana Pacers. Trust me, attending a game is as much about the hoops as the mouth-watering concession stand goodies and infectious half-time shows.

Pro Tip: Keep an eye out for the Mad Dancerz Dance Team, the official dance team of the Fort Wayne Mad Ants. They’re phenomenal!

Have a Wild Time at Fort Wayne Children’s Zoo

Want something that’ll be a surefire hit with the kids? The  Fort Wayne Children’s Zoo  is where little ones and grown-ups alike can marvel at over 100 exotic species from all corners of the globe.

Encounter meerkats, Tasmanian devils, Colobus monkeys, and a California sea lion. And if you dare, soar high on the African Journey Sky Safari to see the zoo from a bird’s-eye view. Don’t forget about Wild Encounters, where you can get up close and personal with fascinating creatures like stingrays, penguins, and giraffes!

Breathe Fresh Air at Promenade Park

Freshly opened in 2019, Promenade Park (Riverfront Fort Wayne) is Fort Wayne’s outdoor oasis where three rivers converge, offering activities for everyone. Kayak through tranquil waterways, stroll through the tree canopy trail (great for all ages and abilities), and watch the kids squeal with delight in Kids’ Canal’s water playground.

Pro Tip:  This outdoor area has an easy in/out ramp at the riverfront for kayaking ease.

Need gear for your day out? Fort Wayne Outfitters & Bike Depot has you covered for a waterside adventure. If you’re looking to cool down, the city also features splash pads and pools aplenty, including a giant one at Headwaters Park.

Discover the Wonder at Science Central

Imagine a place where bright, crayon-like spires beckon you to explore and learn—Welcome to Science Central ! This hands-on museum is a playground for the mind, with over 130 exhibits that are as educational as they are thrilling.

Science comes alive here, especially if you catch their Science on a Sphere exhibit. If you’re lucky, Martin, the Executive Director whose enthusiasm for science knows no bounds, might even give you a tour.

Rest Your Head in Style

Picking a place to stay is a cinch with options like the baseball-themed  Hampton Inn & Suites Fort Wayne Downtown . Here, simplicity and comfort come together—some rooms even overlook the ballpark! Complimentary breakfast is included, and there is a fantastic rooftop bar.

For convenience, the Holiday Inn ( PFW-Coliseum ) offers both friendliness and free shuttle services, not to mention it’s just across from the Vera Bradley sale hotspot.

Parkview Field

Parkview Field is home to the Fort Wayne TinCaps Minor League Baseball team, an affiliate of the San Diego Padres. The field was constructed just before the 2009 season and has been a vital component of downtown ever since.

Noted as one of the best minor league baseball experiences in the country, it's a real summer treat to enjoy a game under the lights at Parkview Field . The regular season typically spans from April through September, with home and away games. Extra special game attractions include post-play fireworks and between-innings crowd interactions.

Parkview Field remains equally as busy outside of baseball games. Its extensive event calendar also includes concerts, fitness festivals, and more than 400 non-baseball events throughout the year. And, weather permitting, the concourse of the baseball stadium is open daily to the public for anyone wanting to stretch their legs on the track.

Foellinger-Freimann Botanical Conservatory

On the south side of downtown, near Parkview Field and the Fort Wayne Firefighters Museum , the Foellinger-Freimann Botanical Conservatory is a year-round tropical attraction. This conservatory delivers three distinct garden areas and is a great place for kids, families, and anyone interested in botanical beauty,

Cacti sprout in the arid environment of the Desert Garden , and the foliage of the Tropical Garden nearly overflows on the walkway adjacent to koi ponds and a waterfall. The seasonal Showcase Garden rotates exhibits throughout the year, including an immersive Butterfly Garden in the spring.

Several classes and programs are offered at this botanical center, including plant swaps, artists' receptions, and grow-your-own activities. The Conservatory also hosts a low-cost $1 Night on the first Thursday of every month.

On-site, the Hamilton Sculpture Garden provides a landscaped space to appreciate. The large open-air pavilion at Headwaters Park can also be rented for private events. Expect crowds of locals and visitors across this sprawling green space throughout the warmer months of the year.

Throughout the colder months of the year, the popular Headwaters Ice Skating Rink is a fun place to enjoy the winter chill. This lighted skate rink operates in the evenings typically from December through February and includes open skating times seven days a week.

Lakeside Park and Rose Garden

Lakeside Park is a popular place to visit just east of town on the shores of a small lagoon. The park encompasses over 25 acres and is popular for several park activities, such as picnics and lounging outside. It's also home to basketball courts, tennis courts, picnic pavilions, and playground equipment.

However, one of the main tourist attractions at Lakeside Park is the astonishing sunken rose garden . This designated All-American Rose Display has over 1,500 varieties sticking out of the ground, typically in full bloom by June and lasting through the summer into fall.

The grounds of the sunken garden are beautiful, too. Landscaped rows of roses stand out in their sunken gardens against white gazebos and a reflecting pool. And despite the crowds that tend to gather on sunny summer weekends, it's hard not to feel the tranquil spirit.

Address: 1401 Lake Ave, Fort Wayne, Indiana

Science Central

Science Central is a hands-on science museum housed in a retired 1908 coal-burning power plant. It caters to kids and interested members of the community, and from the outside, the building still has the appearance of the power plant it was originally designed as, save for the colorful smokestacks and faux dinosaur skeleton near the front door.

Inside the now historic City Light & Power building, more than 35,000 square feet of space help introduce concepts of science to young children. One of the most exciting permanent exhibits at Science Central is the High Rail Bike, which safely teaches kids about gravity.

Science Central facilitates several learning activities and events throughout the year. A few of the programs offered at Science Central include STEM Camps, Coding Clubs, and an Afternoon Science Series.

Science Central is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays and open both days of the weekend.

Address: 1950 North Clinton Street, Fort Wayne, Indiana

From food festivals like the St. Joe Pickle Festival to cultural celebrations like Taste of the Arts and Fort Wayne Pride , there's something to enjoy nearly every weekend of the year in Fort Wayne.

Music plays a critical part in every Fort Wayne festival. Certain celebrations like Buskerfest and Middle Waves Music Festival cater specifically to it. Perhaps the biggest of all festivals to hit Fort Wayne, however, is the Three Rivers Festival in July.

With more than 80 scheduled events, the entire Three Rivers Festival takes place at the expansive Headwaters Park . Celebrations at the festival range from music concerts, massive parades, and fireworks, to other fun things like pie-eating contests.

Detailed exhibits at the museum tell a regional story spanning from native cultures to 20th-century technological innovations. A few of the permanent exhibits include a detailed representation of Miami Indian history in the area, as well as a recreation of a blacksmith shop and foundry. Further exhibits illuminate the more recent innovations to come out of the region, including music equipment and motorcycles.

Five miles south of downtown, the History Center also oversees the tours and events that take place at the Chief Richardville House. This 19 th -century residence is the well-preserved mansion of one of Fort Wayne's most influential historical figures. Visitors can take a self-guided tour of this National Historic Landmark with a small price of admission.

As his last completed theater before his death, Kahn's influential designs are apparent throughout every sunlit corner and brick arch of this performance art and civic theater.

This brilliant auditorium is home to the Fort Wayne Civic Theatre , the Fort Wayne Ballet, the Fort Wayne Dance Collective, and the Fort Wayne Philharmonic. The main stage is surrounded by concrete to create a dramatic and isolating acoustic effect. And, several of these performances take place at night, offering excellent evening entertainment.

More artifacts are admired on the second story of the museum, and visitors can look into the lives and living quarters of modern firefighters. Every relic and artifact at the museum is accompanied by a wealth of information about that certain era of firefighting, providing great insight into one of the bravest professions on the street.
