Sachin Tendulkar recalls his first trip to Australia in 1991, says ‘that tour changed me as a player'

Sachin Tendulkar recalls his first trip to Australia in 1991, says ‘that tour changed me as a player'

  • Sachin Tendulkar reminisces his first Test tour of Australia
  • Tendulkar had scored two hundred on the tour - Sydney and Perth
  • Tendulkar has explained how he had used the tour to approach better

India’s tour of Australia is underway and the hosts have comfortably won the 1st Test after they bowled India out for their lowest Test innings total- 36 in the 3rd innings. Tim Paine’s Australia have thus taken a 1-0 lead in the 4-match Test series and India have clearly struggled against the Australian pace attack.

Virat Kohli’s Team India had registered a 2-1 victory in Australia the last time they toured down under. But this time the challenge is bigger with Kohli gone for the remainder of the Test series and India caught amid injury woes. But if there’s one inspiration that Indian batsmen can derive is from Sachin Tendulkar’s first tour of Australia and how he tackled a fierce bowling attack.

“They were top-class bowlers and I had grown up watching them. From being a ball boy in 1987-88, suddenly in 1991-92, I was playing against them. I knew that once I was out there competing, no one was going to look at my age,” Tendulkar said in a video posted on his YouTube channel.

“They were going to do all possible things to get me out, to send me back to the dressing room. And I was ready to face those challenges. That particular tour changed me as a player. It taught me a lot. Not just technically, but mentally how to approach a big game.”

Tendulkar, who made his Test debut in 1989, had toured Australia for the first time in 1991 for the 5-match Test series down under. While India had a forgettable tour, a 4-0 thrashing, Tendulkar scored two hundred - at Sydney (148) and Perth (114).

“People talk about steep bounce and pace. Steep bounce and pace mean that the good length area for the bowler becomes small. It becomes that much tougher for the bowler to find that ideal spot. So if the batter goes out to bat with a positive approach looking to score runs and just keep blocking, there are many scoring opportunities,” he explained.

“I looked at it that way. Early on it was about getting on top of the ball, but as time went by, my thinking evolved. I thought why do you always have to get on tip off the ball. When there is no third man, you can get under the ball and use their pace. If they falter on the shorter side, I would go over slips, or gully, and even if I don’t get it right because of the pace and bounce, it was going to carry.” Also Read | India vs Australia: This 36-all out crisis can work as a glue for Team India to come together, says Deep Dasgupta

India tour of Australia: a brief history

India's dream of winning a Test series in Australia hasn't fulfilled yet. They have toured Australia 10 times but never returned home with the trophy.

India’s dream of winning a Test series in Australia hasn’t fulfilled yet. They have toured Australia 10 times but never returned home with the trophy.

Here is a look-back at India’s performance in Australia from 1947 to 2012.

1947-48: India’s first experience on the Australian soil came when the Lala Amarnath-led India faced Don Bradman’s Australia at the Brisbane Cricket Ground. India began the tour on an awful note as they were trounced by an innings and 226 runs. Amaranth took four wickets in the match.

Riding on an all-round show by Dattu Phadkar (51 runs and 3 wickets), India managed to draw the second Test at the Sydney Cricket Ground but went on to lose the last three Tests. Amarnath was the highest wicket-taker for India with 13 wickets while Vijay Zahare (429) was second in the list of run-getters after Bradman, who led batting chart with 715 runs.

Result: Australia 4, India 0, Draw 1

1967-68: India’s second tour Down Under came after 19 years with Farokh Engineer, Dilip Sardesai, Ajit Wadekar and Chandu Borde on the plane. In the absence of regular captain Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi, Borde got the chance to lead the team in the first Test. Abid Ali, who was making his debut, bagged 6 wickets while Engineer chipped in with 89 but India lost the match by 146 runs.

India lost the second Test too, where Ajit Wadekar fell short of just one run to reach a century.

India staged a solid fightback in the third Test. Despite a brilliant century from Motganhalli Jaisimha, India lost the match by 35 runs. Pataudi-led India went on to lose the fourth Test as well and suffered a humiliating 4-0 whitewash by the Bill Lawry-captained Australia.

Result: Australia 4, India 0, Drawn 0

1977-78: Bishen Singh Bedi captained India to their first ever Test win on Australian soil in 1977-78. After losing the first two Tests of the five-match series, India went on to win the third and fourth match thanks to the incredible left-arm spin bowling by skipper Bedi and Bhagwath Chandrasekhar, who bagged 31 and 28 wickets, respectively, in the series. But India lost the final game to concede the series 2-3.

Result: Australia 3, India 2, Drawn 0

1980-81: India played three Tests in Australia under Sunil Gavaskar during the tour. After losing the first match, India held the visitors to a draw in the second and then levelled the series by winning the third. Gundappa Viswanath was adjudged ‘Man of the Match’ for his magnificent 114. The series ended in a 1-1 draw.

Result: Australia 1, India 1, Drawn 1

1985-86: The tour saw all three matches of the series being drawn. For his all-round show, captain Kapil Dev was adjudged ‘Man of the Series’.

Result: Australia 0, India 0, Drawn 3

1991-92: The legendary Sachin Tendulkar, who pulled the curtains down on his glorious 24-year career in 2013, notched up his first Test century on the Australian soil on this tour. Other than that, India failed miserably in front of the Australian pace attack and lost the five-match Test series 4-0.

Result: Australia 4, India 0, Drawn 1

1999-2000: Tendulkar captained India on this tour. After losing the first two Tests, India couldn’t salvage pride in the last Test as well despite VVS Laxman’s first Test century in Australia. The hosts swept the series 3-0.

Result: Australia 3, India 0, Drawn 0

2003-04: Chance of winning a Test series in Australia slipped from India’s hand once again. After playing a draw in the opening Test, the Sourav Ganguly-led India won the second match thanks to Rahul Dravid, who followed his magnificent 233 in the first innings by an unbeaten 72 in the second. But India went on to lose the third Test while the fourth ended in a draw. The four-match series was tied 1-1. With 619 runs in the series at an average of 123.80, Dravid was adjudged ‘Man of the Series.’

Result: Australia 1, India 1, Drawn 2

2007-08: Anil Kumble captained India in the 2007-08 Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia which was marred with the ‘Monkeygate’ episode. With the likes of Sehwag, Tendulkar, Ganguly, Dravid and Laxman in the team, India went on tour with high hopes, but the visitors started the campaign on a terrible note losing the first two Tests. And though Kumble & Co won the third Test in Perth, India failed to level the series in the last match to lose it 2-1.

Result: Australia 2, India 1, Drawn 1

2011-12: Mahendra Singh Dhoni skippered the Indian team on the 2011-12 tour. India went in with a combination of young and experienced players but failed to lived up to the expectations suffering a humiliating 4-0 series whitewash. Rahul Dravid took retirement after the tour.

The history of india tours to australia.

Anyone can contribute to The Roar and have their work featured alongside some of Australia’s most prominent sports journalists.

Now that the upcoming series between India and Australia down under has been confirmed, further COVID outbreaks permitting, it is timely to stroll down memory lane to reminisce about series past here in Australia.

Indian tours to Australia have been anything but sedate, marked by high quality cricket, acrimony and controversy.

1947-48 Newly independent India made its first official tour of Australia. While India was free of the yoke of British imperialism it ran into the imperial majesty of the Don Bradman-led Australians. The Don himself scored four big hundreds in the five-Test series. This was a precursor to Australia’s Invincibles tour of the UK in 1948. The home series against India was won by the hosts four-nil.

1967-68 After a gap of 20 years, India toured Australia but as with the previous series they lost four-nil. India was led with the bat by the regal Nawab Pataudi and Australia was led by Bob Cowper and the young Ian Chappell. Although not necessarily finding the pitches to their liking, India’s spinners performed well.

1977-78 This series, which featured the new, no-name, establishment Australian cricket team, saw a thrilling three-two victory to Australia, with the series not decided until the last day of the last Test. Australia was led by the 42-year-old Bob Simpson, recalled from retirement to fill the leadership void following the defection of its first-choice players. Jeff Thomson remained true to the establishment cause for this series. India’s famed spinners dominated with the ball, as did Sunil Gavaskar with the bat with three centuries in three consecutive Tests.

For Australia, Simpson’s return was a successful one with a huge hundred in Perth, while a host of newcomers as well as Sheffield Shield veterans were introduced to the national team. With the exception of Kim Hughes and John Dyson, a number of the Australian players did not go onto long Test careers, especially as the reconciliation with the Kerry Packer players occurred two years later. In this series, from being two-nil down, India recovered to level the series at two-all leading into the final Test at Adelaide. Set an imposing 493 to win, India fell short in the last Test by just 46 runs.

1980-81 This three-Test series was tied one-all. It was an early sign of acrimony to follow in later series. Gavaskar, aggrieved by the umpiring throughout the tour, was given out LBW in Melbourne and threatened a walk-off as he summoned his batting partner to accompany him back to the pavilion. The quick-thinking actions of the manager prevented a forfeit of the match and potentially a diplomatic incident. Controversy about the state of the MCG also abounded. Australia was bundled out for 83 at the MCG, allowing India to level the series, on the back of a five-for by Kapil Dev and good bowling by Dilip Doshi. India was however in the process of moving away from its all-spin ethos, especially overseas, realising that on faster tracks, more pace options were required. This was a lesson well learnt decades on as we shall see. Dennis Lillee dominated for Australia through the series, and India was well served by the veteran Gundappa Viswanath and newcomer Sandeep Patil.

1985-86 While this series was a nil-all draw, India was on top for the most part, with bad weather foiling a bid for victory in Melbourne. Australia was in a transition phase following the retirements of its greats two seasons earlier and the defection of players to the South African rebel tours. This was India’s best chance to date for a breakthrough series win in Australia but the history books would not record it that way. India’s batting strengths were displayed in full but the bowling lacked overall menace.

1991-92 A resurgent Australia, fresh from Ashes victories in the previous few years, was again building a team of strength. Led by Allan Border, they had top-order stability, middle-order flair and fast-bowling capability. India lost four-nil. This series was notable for the emergence of two megastars of the future: Sachin Tendulkar, who scored a century in Perth, and the debut of Shane Warne in Sydney. While Warne’s debut did not exactly set the world on fire, it nonetheless was an important introduction to the international arena. By the way, India lost four-nil.

1999-00 Australia was in the midst of a record-breaking winning sequence under Steve Waugh. Australia won three-nil in the three-match series. Tendulkar scored his obligatory century, while the world was given a glimpse of the future stardom of VVS Laxman.

2003-04 This series was drawn one-all. The Indian top-order batsmen had a feast in this series, topping 700 in the first innings of the final Sydney Test. India secured an outstanding come-from-behind victory in Adelaide on the back of marathons by Laxman and Rahul Dravid (reprising their efforts in India two years earlier), while an Australian team weakened by the absence of Warne and Glenn McGrath in this series was highly competitive, highlighting how difficult it is for overseas teams to win in Australia. The Sydney Test was the final in the illustrious career of Steve Waugh, who endeared himself to Indian crowds at home and in India with his willingness to embrace different cultural experiences.

2007-08 Following previous series played with reasonable tranquility, this one was particularly vexatious. Umpiring controversies, especially in the Sydney Test, and a threatened cancellation of the tour by India all reflected and contributed to a series full of rancor. The final day of the Sydney Test was a desperate and at times ugly affair. Australia won the series two-one, but India had a breakthrough win in Perth.

2011-12 This time India was facing a period of transition with the last gasp of its famed veterans, including Tendulkar, Laxman and Dravid. Australia won the series four-nil, and Michael Clarke had a summer-long birthday, which included a triple century. For India, Virat Kohli had his first Test tour down under.

2014-15 This series was conducted against the sad backdrop of the passing of Phil Hughes, necessitating a delayed start. While the mood was grim, the cricket was stimulating. Despite the two-nil scoreline in favour of Australia, the series was competitive. The world saw Steve Smith’s run-scoring frenzy and Kohli proved he was no slouch either.

2018-19 Australia minus the sandpaper culprits lost its first series at home to India. India’s victory was based on a dominant pace attack, the first time you could say that about an Indian team in Australia. The bowlers were unrelenting, probing weaknesses in temperament and technique. Despite a hiccup in Perth, India won the series two-one and were well and truly on top in the Sydney Test, which was badly rain-affected. The balance of power in world cricket, both on and off the field, was changing.
