The fishing season in Cape Verde spans across the entire 365 days of the year. It’s true that in January and February the winds can be strong which can make it difficult for fishing in Cape Verde, but the rest of the year this archipelago offers excellent conditions.

Also commonly referred to as the world's capital for Blue Marlin fishing , the months of March, April, May and June provide the best time for Atlantic Blue Marlin big game fishing in Cape Verde . From June to October the marlin fishing is still very good, with calmer seas and you can also target popular fishing species such as Wahoo, Yellowfin tuna, Dorado and Sailfish.

Cape Verde is also a great place for jigging , especially between July and December when the winds tend to drop a little. Jigging produces huge Amberjack, Black Jack, Grouper, tuna and many other species.

Reviews from the users

One this trip unfortunately did not catch but on second trip caught a large wahoo. Ship mates both excellent and very helpful. Only aspect that puzzled me was that the boat was not the Albatroz but that was not a great concern Carlos, top bloke, saw me off both times(collect the money!) and had an excellent meal at his Sol Doce Creperia foc If in Santa Maria would go again with his crew martin martin

Super Angelausflug. Immer wieder gerne. Markus Markus

Great crew and I am sure they know what they are doing. The boat was a bit worn out, but the trip was fine. Jacob Jacob

The crew was top class, unfortunately we only had a small catch, but that depends on the day Thomas H. HÖRL

Tips & tricks for fishing trips in cape verde.

As mentioned above, big game fishing in Cape Verde is renowned for being the best fishing site in the world for the prized Atlantic Blue Marlin. This predator lives here all year round, but the best time of year to fish for them is from mid-March to late June. In summer these pelagic fish migrate north towards the Canary Islands, Madeira and the Azores for example. There are fewer of them found in September and October but the ones that stay tend to be larger. From September to December, the waters of Cape Verde are extremely interesting for fishing, as they are offering for example Yellowfin tuna up to 150kg. Trolling you can also catch fish such as Wahoo, Dolphinfish and Barracuda.

The northeast coast of Santo Antão is especially effective for this technique because this is where the greatest concentration of Wahoo can be found. The rocky and volcanic seabed is an ideal habitat for Amberjacks, and here they can reach a weight of 60kg. Jigging is also very popular and this technique can help to catch Blackjack, Barracuda, Grouper and Oilfish.

Around Cape Verde, fishermen practice a lot of deep-sea fishing in depths of 100m and this can bring excellent results from areas that are practically untouched. Cape Verde is also a great place to fish for sharks such as Tiger sharks, Bull sharks, Hammerhead and Manta Grande, which can reach up to 300kg.

Top species in Cape Verde

Atlantic blue marlin.

Cape Verde is known as the best place in the world for fishing Atlantic Blue Marlin. They live here all year round, but mid-March to late June is the best time to find them.  Without a doubt, the best island for fishing in Cape Verde is São Vicente and dozens of fishing boats depart from its port every day in search of marlin. The islands of Santiago, Santo Antão, Sal and Boa Vista are also great places to catch a marlin. In fact, there are so many fish here that fishermen often complain if they "only" catch two Marlin in one day. Times are tough hey!

White marlin

White Marlin usually move in small groups in waters deeper than 100m, feeding on a variety of fish, cephalopods and crustaceans. The best time for fishing white marlin in Cape Verde is between July and November.

Yellowfin tuna

From September to December, the waters of Cape Verde are great for fishing Yellowfin tuna, which can weigh up to 150kg. The Yellowfin tuna is renowned and prized for its speed and strength whilst fighting with fishermen and this fish is very popular for sport fishing in many parts of the area.

Wahoo can be caught at any time of year by trolling with lures. This technique can also help to catch Dolphinfish and Barracuda. The northeast coast of Santo Antão is great for wahoo because there is a large concentration of them.

The best way to fish for Amberjack in Cape Verde tends to be with live bait or trolling, whilst some may use jigging techniques with large, elongated jigs ("blades"). The rocky, volcanic seabed is an ideal habitat for Amberjacks and they can be massive, sometimes impressively exceeding 60kg. Due to the winds and strong currents, it is advisable to fish with heavy jigs (over 300g).

Other fish you can catch jigging are Blackjack, Grouper or Oilfish just to name a few.

Top sport fishing species in Cape Verde

Mahi Mahi (Coryphaena hippurus) are also commonly referred to as dorado, dolphin or dolphinfish. They are recognizable by their bluntly shaped heads, long dorsal fin and their bright colouring, dark blue and green on their dorsal side and yellow on their sides and underside.

fishing trip cape verde

Wahoo ( Acanthocybium solandri ), also known as Ono (meaning “delicious” in Hawaiian), are found in many subtropical and tropical waters. They’re identifiable by their blue-green upper body which shifts into silver towards their belly. They also have blue vertical striping along their sides. These predators are torpedo-shaped and have long and largemouths with teeth.

fishing trip cape verde

The Amberjack species are a game fish that are found both in the Pacific Ocean, Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea. Jigging and live bait fishing are the best techniques to target these magnificent fighters. Greater Amberjack can weigh up to 170 lb (80 kg).

fishing trip cape verde

Yellowfin tuna grow fast, up to 400 pounds (180kg)  in about a 7-year lifespan, and they range in length from 59 inches to 88 inches long. They’re known for their torpedo shape, with a pointed nose and a sickle-shaped tail, and have dark blue backs with yellow sides (thus their name) with a silver underside.

Yellowfin Tuna

fishing trip cape verde

The Blue Marlin ( Makaira nigricans ) is probably the most wanted fish in the sport fishing world. The magnificent fighter usually feeds during day time on fish, octopuses and squids. Blue Marlin is mainly caught trolling with artificial lures or with dead bait (bonito, mackerel...).

Blue Marlin

Fishing season in cape verde, autumn and winter.

Fishing in Cape Verde from September to December can prove very interesting as you can catch Wahoo and Yellowfin tuna with the latter weighing up to 150kg. These are caught by trolling with artificial lures. This is also the most recommended season for vertical jigging in Cape Verde. Since there is less wind, there’s less drift and the jig falls more vertically. Using this technique, you can catch big Amberjack of up to 60kg, Blackjack, Barracuda, Grouper and Oilfish during your day trips.

Spring and summer

Cape Verde is the mecca fishing area for catching Atlantic Blue Marlin. Although they live here all year round, mid-March to late June is the best time for big game fishing in Cape Verde. July, August, September and October are also very good months for marlin, there might be fewer marlin than May and June, but those that are caught tend to be much larger. For White Marlin, July to November is a very good time to fish.

TOP FISHING TECHNIQUES IN Cape Verde

Bottom fishing is probably one of the easiest methods of fishing, the technique is really simple, consisting in a rig for fishing on the bottom with a weight attached to the line, and a hook at the end of the line.

Tuna fishing is a fishing technique that brings together all the ways to fish this incredible predator. You can fish via trolling, spinning or jigging among others. Tuna is a fierce fighter, so adequate material is required to face this magnificent fighter.

Trolling is a fishing technique where one or more fishing lines, baited with lures or natural bait, are drawn behind a moving boat. Trolling can be done both in-shore and off-shore.

The trolling speed depends on the type of bait and the fish species. Where tuna and marlin like a speed of 6 to 10 knots, other species such as dentex or seabass should be targeted with a trolling speed of 3-4 knots maximum.

When trolling, the angler tries to raise a fish behind the boat using hookless teasers. Once the fish is there, the angler drops back a dead bait to a fish raised on a hookless teaser. Bait & Switch is probably the most exciting way of marlin fishing.

Marlin fishing brings together all the ways to target this amazing predator. Marlin are mostly caught trolling artificials or dead bait behind the boat at a speed ranging from 6 tot 10 knots. This fish is a fighting machine so make sure you have adequate fishing tackle on board.

Spin Fishing is a technique of fishing that is used to target fish that are usually close to the top of the water. Throwing a lure of any description and retrieving it in a variety of different speeds and rhythms to produce a bite from a nearby fish.

Pop fishing or "popping" is one of the most exciting ways to fish as you can witness all the action close to the surface of the water.

This style of fishing involves dragging a lure known as a popper across the surface of the water with a short sharp retrieving action. The lure slaps against the water creating a popping sound and fires up nearby fish.

Shark fishing is a sport that combines fisherman against one of the oldest animals on the planet. It is an exciting form of fishing when productive and is usually done, but not always, by chumming the water close to your fishing grounds and fishing with an alive or dead natural bait.

This type of fishing generally requires a decent amount of travelling away from land. You will be fishing in potentially large depths of water but generally chasing tuna or marlin type species that live closer to the surface. Famous pioneers like Ernest Hemingway made deep sea fishing and big game fishing very popular. For deep sea fishing large, expensive boats and strong fishing tackle are required.

Jigging is the fishing technique where an angler fishes a metal lure, called a jig, vertically. This is opposed to spinnerbaits which move through the water horizontally. Basically, a metal lure is dropped to a certain depth (normally the bottom) and then reeled in with rhythmic, jerky moves to attract the predator.

Cape Verde Islands are worldwide recognized as the Blue Marlin Capital ! Impressive numbers and also good size fish expect you and our crew will do everything to make this trip unforgotten for you. Even if Blue Marlin is the main goal for many anglers there are plenty of other game fish such as Tuna, Wahoo, Sailfish and Jacks. Blue Marlin Fishing is a teamwork and we want our anglers become part of this team, improving their skills and feel the magic of catching Billfish. Our 3 boats The HOOKER, SMOKER and SAMBO are perfect for the conditions we find on Cape Verde. Our crew is well experienced and has fished Cape Verde over 10 years now. We fish hard and will be the first on the water when the fish are biting.

We are based on Sao Vicente a nothern island with around 70000 people. This island offers a nice marina, good hotels, appartments and restaurants. The Cape Verde archipelago is located around 370 miles of the coast of west Africa and is composed of ten islands. The climate is mild between 25 and 29 °C. The islands are all volcanic in origin and the oficial language is portugese. Even if you have a mild climate we recommend to bring a sweatshirt and light jacket for the days on sea and during the night on land.

Fishing in Cape Verde

Our fishing day is at least 10 hours, when the bite is good we stay longer out of course. We leave the harbor between 6 and 8 regarding the bite time and the preference of our anglers. Food and drinks are included. Our main goal is Blue Marlin. We can fish 3 different islands: Sao Vicente, Sao Antao and Sao Nicolau with all their banks and drop offs. That brings a lot of advantage to other places as we can look for the Marlin and not wait for them. We practise a lot of stand up and pitch bait fishing which is always a great challenge for anglers and crew. Besides impressive numbers of Blue Marlin, you can catch Whaoo, Tuna, Sailfish, Jacks and Sharks on Cape Verde.

Our Season runs from end of March to mid of December. Apart from Blue Marlin fishing, the jigging can be really incredible with some Amberjacks in world record sizes. Best month for jigging are August to December due to the calmer sea conditions. That gives us the chance to explore some very productive spots around Sao Vicente, Sao Antao and Sao Nicolau.

Here we see a true land of monsters. Think of Ascension Island then multiply it by the many islands within our reach. There are the same wild volcanic landscapes, the same brutal drop offs and the same mesmerising deep sapphire waters.

Your hunting here is full spectrum. Inshore you have volcanic caves, ledges and sand patches. These are home to groupers, amberjacks up to 70Kg and a wild diversity of reef fish. Lobsters and octopus can also be caught in many spots. You will be surprised how many shipwrecks are in easy reach. These hold the usual wreck species you would expect. Slightly further out, you have drop offs rapid down to 50m+. Here you will find mighty amberjacks and the occasional wahoo. Further out still we enter the true bluewater domain. Here you need to cover some distance to find those jewels in the sea; the massive sea mounts, some of which rise 1000m from the seabed below. Here is your very best chance to encounter the pinnacle of pelagics… abundant wahoo and tuna, and always with the chance of Marlin and Sailfish. You may wish to hunt many of these species or you may wish to concentrate on just one, such as Marlin. The choice is yours and we will help you build a mission plan on the build up to your trip.

Astonishing waters like this call for an uncommon spearfishing boat. The usual RIBs cannot hope to safely fish the awe inspiring Sea Mounts or the vast offshore banks. For this reason we have selected an uncommon boat for your needs… To give you the best experience we limit the party to 4 divers on board. We can carry some guests as well. Should your party be larger than 4 divers then why not split the trip so that each group spends the same number of days with us, and when the other team is on the boat, enjoy inshore spearfishing, trekking, scuba diving, paintball, beach parties and local culture.

We organise regular beach parties with the local dive school, where you can enjoy a BBQ and a few beers on virgin beaches and desolate, uninhabited islands. We have a strong environmentalist drive to conserve our ecosystem here so we leave nothing behind but footprints.

The boat ‘Arc Hammer’ has enough range to reach the Canary Islands so the far distant Cape Verde Seamounts are no issue. We have installed a diving platform to make recovery simple. We have A/C, Sound System, extensive supplies and spare spearfishing parts plus a few surprises.

The experience

Diving us you will find a totally new spearfishing experience. It is simple. We are fanatics. We hunt hard, and if it is your thing, we can party hard too! Choosing to overnight at many of the Islands gives you the option to go ashore to explore and adventure… or to stay on board, sleep on board, and drop hooks for Broadbill Swordfish, Diablo Rojo, and Tiger Sharks. We aim to make this the most adventurous trip of your spearfishing life to date. We base our package on our own experiences.

For those who do not wish to spear billfish we offer you the chance to jump in and photograph them! Why not get the photo of a lifetime with your best camera? There are charging points on board, and internet wifi can be available depending on the trip profile.

Catering for all levels

If you are a raw beginner, please let us know! With our spearfishing charters in Cape Verde, we can provide the tuition that will make you proficient in a few days, expert in a few trips, and a master in a few more. On hand we have world record holding spear fishermen absolutely dedicated to making your dreams come true. For a beginner we can really offer you 1-1 coaching and tuition in the most demanding environments. Think a beginner can’t land a monster fish? Book 5 days with us and think again! Here amongst the monsters we will guide and safeguard you as you work towards your dreams.

If you are a hardened veteran then let’s talk about what you really want to achieve. We think big here, and that means pretty much anything. We broke the limits as spears ourselves so we want to discuss your dreams and make it happen. We will consider any quest carefully and if it is possible to make it happen we will put it in action, however difficult. Name your quarry, however difficult, and we can give you a proposal, including mighty species such as the Marlin and… the never yet landed swordfish. As any expert knows, the more difficult the quarry, the longer you need to hunt it and the greater the challenge, both mental and physical.

Your safety is paramount to us so if an expert has a challenging goal, we will need to satisfy ourselves that you and your equipment are ready for what is proposed, and if so, you will have an elite spearo as your supporting wing man.

Your package

Back to the general territory of most divers, we can put you in amongst abundant Wahoo, Tuna, and Amberjacks. You want groupers? We have plenty. You want pelagics? We have plenty. You want true adventure? Come to Cape Verde and let us exceed your expectations.

Our proposal here is to give you a truly bespoke package. Why not troll for Marlin between diving spots? Why not drop a hook at night for Swordfish and Shark? Night diving here is not something we would advise without without very specialised kit. Sharks here are generally not problematic as they are very well fed! They tend to be absent in the day, but active at night. Certainly we have had no aggressive contacts despite occasional meetings during the day. Where there are fish, there are sharks, without exception but will fully brief you depending on your dive spot. My own hunting has yielded rare meetings with Bulls, Makos, Tigers, Hammerheads and reef sharks. None of these sharks were even slightly aggressive, as there is so much food for them!

If you are looking for an unforgettable experience, book our live aboard option for a week and see all the islands and sea mounts. On board we can cook your catch for you that same evening. We lived the dream as spearos ourselves and now for the first time we want to offer you that same dream from our new boat.

You can fly direct to us from Lisbon to Sao Vicente. Accommodation is inexpensive if you travel with family or don’t want to take us up on the live aboard option. We have plenty of activities to offer you off the boat including trekking, Scuba Diving, Island Tours and Paintball. There are beautiful white sand beaches and of course we can party like true spearos if you like! The season here is all year round. Here is an indication of when you may wish to come. We are very fortunate here in that we can hunt plentiful wahoo all year round.

Spearfishing season in Cape Verde

There is no ‘down season’ here and no wrong time to come. Get in touch with us and we will make the ultimate underwater hunting and adventure holiday for you. You can book us for just one day or for as long as you like. The more information you give us, the better the experience we can give you.

One other unique aspect of Cape Verde spearfishing is that we are a fully equipped big game fishing boat. For no extra charge you can have some fun fishing in very deep water or trolling for Marlin or fishing in the inky black night time water for monstrous species you would not wish to meet.

Sea Fishing

If you fancy sea fishing regardless of experience there is something for everyone with regards to fishing the beautiful turquoise waters of Sal.   Sea fishing from the shore with a guide, catching the smaller fish for fun (or the barbeque),  you can take a boat for a morning, afternoon or a day, fishing for Blue Marlin or Sail fish.

The boat captains in Sal, due to their vast experience, can take you for a memorable trip with all the tools you need. Experienced fishermen can bring their own or use the equipment provided.

Most of the boats are fitted with fish finders and the Captains are respectful of the laws allowing bigger fish for the future. Sun yourself whilst you are fishing or you can choose the shade.

Drinking water is provided and depending on your requirements you can bring your own beverages to have a beer or soft drink whilst you fish.

Be warned whilst sea fishing in Cape Verde all the boat crews expect to keep the fish themselves as they have the markets to sell the fish instead of a tip as they don't get paid much, if you want to take fish home be sure to inform the person at the time of booking you on the trip so the boat crew know to expect this. You may have to pay for any fish you take if there is any available.

Depending on the season and your preference you can trawl for the larger fish, drop anchor for leisurely shallow water fishing with your own line and reel and various other disciplines.

Rock Fishing is a daily technique, as it’s not safe to go on doing it after the sunset. It’s done on a sheer position, where the ocean bed is rocky and over 40 m deep. Fishing with baloon is used to chase big sharks, dolphinfishes or GT and Cableway Fishing is used to fish in depth sharks, big moray eels and groupers.

Rock Fishing’s target is to chase big preys, and, that’s not a joke, big sharks have been hooked and kept with the rod for a long time, till we could bring them near us, as it was impossible to raise them to take the usual picture with them.

We use 3,96 m rods and 50 lb reels, lines are made in nylon 0,60, held down lengthening with a steel terminal.

Fishing in Cape Verde is an adventure that promises both excitement and challenge. Here’s what you can expect when you embark on a fishing expedition in these waters.

A Variety of Fishing Techniques

While trolling is the most common technique used for Blue Marlin fishing in Cape Verde, other methods like bait fishing and stand-up fishing are also popular. These techniques offer a unique challenge and add to the overall fishing experience.

A Mix of Sizes

Blue Marlins in Cape Verde vary greatly in size. One hookup might be a 300-pounder, and the next a solid 900 or even a grander . This unpredictability adds to the excitement and allure of fishing in Cape Verde.

A Rich Marine Ecosystem

Besides impressive numbers of Blue Marlin, the waters of Cape Verde are home to other game fish such as Yellow Fin Tuna, Sailfish, Wahoo, and several different shark species. This rich marine ecosystem makes every fishing trip a unique experience.

Planning a fishing trip to Cape Verde is relatively straightforward. Here are some tips to help you plan your adventure.

Choosing the Right Time

The prime Blue Marlin season in Cape Verde lies between March and August. However, Cape Verde is a year-round fishing spot, so you can plan your trip according to your convenience.

Selecting a Fishing Charter

Choosing the right fishing charter is crucial for a successful fishing trip. Look for charters with experienced captains who are familiar with the local waters. Some charters also provide all the necessary equipment, making your trip hassle-free.

Preparing for the Trip

When packing for your trip, remember to bring a sweatshirt and light jacket for the days on the sea. Also, don’t forget to pack your camera to capture the breathtaking scenery and your big catches.

Getting to Cape Verde for your marlin fishing adventure involves a few steps, but with the right information, the journey can be part of the fun. Here’s what you need to know:

Airports and Flights

Cape Verde has several international airports, but the most commonly used by marlin fishermen are Amílcar Cabral International Airport (SID) on Sal Island and Cesária Évora Airport (VXE) on São Vicente Island.

Direct flights to Cape Verde are available from Europe and the eastern United States, making the islands increasingly accessible to international visitors.

From the U.S., you can find flights to Cape Verde from major cities like Boston and Miami, often with a stopover in Lisbon, Portugal.

From Europe, direct flights are available from many major cities, including Lisbon, Madrid, and Amsterdam. Flight times vary depending on your location, but you can expect a flight from the U.S. to take about 7-10 hours and from Europe around 4-6 hours.

Getting to the Fishing Spots

Once you arrive in Cape Verde, getting to the fishing spots will depend on where you’re staying.

Sao Vicente : If you’re staying in Sao Vicente, most fishing charters are moored in the port of Mindelo at the Big Game Fishing Club. To get there, you can take a taxi or arrange a transfer with your hotel or fishing charter. The journey from Cesária Évora Airport to Mindelo takes about 15 minutes.

Sal : If you’re staying in Sal, the fishing spots are just minutes from the pier in Santa Maria. You can get to Santa Maria from Amílcar Cabral International Airport by taxi or hotel transfer, which takes about 20 minutes.

Boavista : If you’re staying in Boavista, you’ll need to arrange a full-day trip due to the distance to the fishing areas. You can get to Boavista from either Sal or Sao Vicente by domestic flight, which takes about an hour.

Choosing the right place to stay can significantly enhance your marlin fishing experience in Cape Verde. Here are some top recommendations based on the island’s proximity to prime fishing locations and the quality of accommodations available.

Sao Vicente: The Heart of Marlin Fishing

Sao Vicente is a popular choice for marlin fishing, with most fishing charters moored in the port of Mindelo at the Big Game Fishing Club. The sea floor around Sao Vicente has interesting structures that attract baitfish and, in turn, marlin.

For accommodations, consider the Don Paco Hotel , Prassa 3 Hotel , Mindelo Hotel , or Porto Grande . These establishments offer comfortable stays and easy access to fishing charters.

Sal: Convenience and Comfort

Sal is another excellent choice for marlin fishing, with the drop-off just minutes from the pier in Santa Maria. The convenience of Sal allows for half-day trips, making it a practical choice for those with limited time. For a comfortable stay, consider the Hotel Dunas de Sal, Hilton Cabo Verde, Melia Hotel, or Hotel Morabeza.

Boavista: Full-Day Fishing Adventures

While the fishing areas are generally further away, Boavista still offers a great marlin fishing experience. Full-day trips are usually conducted due to the distance to the fishing areas. For accommodations, consider the Hotel Riu Karamboa, Royal Horizons Boa Vista, or Riu Palace. These hotels provide comfortable stays and are conveniently located for your fishing adventures.

In addition to these, there are several fishing charters that provide excellent services. These include the Smoker in Mindelo , Sao Vicente, Albatroz in Santa Maria , Cape Verde, and Mio Amore in Boavista.

These charters can provide a great fishing experience, and they often have connections with local accommodations to provide a complete package for your stay.

Fishing in Cape Verde is more than just a sport; it’s an unforgettable experience. The thrill of battling a giant Blue Marlin, the camaraderie among anglers, and the stunning natural beauty of Cape Verde all combine to create a truly unique adventure.

The Thrill of the Catch

There’s nothing quite like the thrill of hooking a Blue Marlin. These powerful creatures put up a fierce fight, making the catch all the more rewarding. Whether you’re a seasoned angler or a beginner, the experience of reeling in a Blue Marlin is something you’ll never forget.

The Beauty of Cape Verde

Cape Verde’s natural beauty is the perfect backdrop for a fishing adventure. The crystal-clear waters of the Atlantic, the picturesque islands, and the abundant marine life make Cape Verde a paradise for nature lovers.

The Camaraderie Among Anglers

Fishing in Cape Verde is also about the camaraderie among anglers. You’ll find that many of the crews are friends and that many of their clients are also friends or friends of friends. It’s a close-knit community and this adds greatly to the experience in Cape Verde.

While Cape Verde is generally considered a safe destination for tourists, it is a West African country, and that means there are dangers to be aware of.
