2023 Ford Expedition

2023 Ford Expedition: Will There Be a Hybrid Version? What Engines Are There

Ford did a major refresh to the Expedition SUV for 2022. So the 2023 Expedition probably won’t see a lot of changes. But there was an expectation that a hybrid engine option would come in 2023. Whether it comes for the 2023 models is still unknown, but there are other engines available for Ford’s largest SUV, so let’s look.

The Expedition is based on Ford’s F-150 truck chassis, so it has the driving and handling characteristics of an F-150. That’s not a bad thing, it’s just not the same as a unibody SUV like the Ford Explorer. All SUVs were once designed like this.

Will the PowerBoost hybrid engine be available in the Expedition for 2023?

2023 Ford Expedition

Ford’s PowerBoost hybrid engine was expected, as it can already be found in the F-150. Even at this late date, it is unclear if the PowerBoost V6 will be available for the 2023 Expedition. With the all-new 2022 Toyota Sequoia featuring a hybrid V6, it seems that Ford would need to offer a similar powertrain.

If there is a hybrid coming, it will be the same or very similar to the F-150. And even without the hybrid, there are three capable V6 engines that, naturally, use more fuel. A 380 hp 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 with 470 lb-ft of torque is the standard engine for the Expedition. Moving up to the Limited trim, that number increases to 400 hp and 480 lb-ft of torque.

Does the Expedition get a high-output engine?

2023 Ford Expedition

If you order the Timberline option, that comes with the high-output 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 with anywhere from 440 hp to 500 hp and over 500 lb-ft of torque. Keep in mind that this same engine, breathed upon by Ford engineers, powers the Ford GT, rated at 660 hp. So there is lots of room for increased power, though we don’t expect to see GT numbers in F-150s or Expeditions.

The PowerBoost V6, as it is in the Ford F-150, has around 430 hp. But that number can increase or decrease depending on where Ford wants to slot it. We do expect one of the Ecoboost V6 engines to be dropped. Which one gets the ax is anybody’s guess.

What are some of the Expedition’s other features?

2023 Ford Expedition

A 10-speed automatic transmission backs all three EcoBoost engines. The Timberline comes standard with all-wheel drive, while the other Expedition trims come standard with two-wheel drive. All can be optioned with all-wheel drive, as well.

All Expeditions come in two body styles, the standard version, and the Expedition Max. Though large to begin with, going the Max route adds a foot to the standard SUV. The Max can easily accommodate eight people. Production will begin in November 2022. Ford has not released 2023 Expedition pricing yet.

Ford Expedition Electric render

Future Ford Expedition Electric: What to Expect

  • Flagship Ford SUV will eventually adopt 100% electrification
  • A next-gen EV platform is under development for Ford SUVs larger than the Mustang Mach-E
  • Ford's first three-row electric SUV, coming out in 2025, will deliver 350 miles of range
  • Ford's 2025 three-row SUV to be the size of the Explorer with the space of an Expedition

As Ford prepares to introduce a wave of new electric vehicles across various segments, its goal is to increase global annual EV production to more than 2 million units. One of these new EVs is expected to be the all-new Ford Expedition Electric. With this SUV, Ford will continue its commitment to providing buyers with electrified vehicle options that deliver the freedom and flexibility they seek.

While it’s too early to offer a definitive picture of the full-size electric SUV, below is the general expectation from a Ford Expedition Electric variant. Note that Ford has not spoken publicly about an electric Expedition, and this piece is based on the information revealed during the Blue Oval’s strategy announcements and our analysis of Ford’s second generation of EV products.

“Bullet Train” Design

In the interest of efficiency, the Ford Expedition Electric will be more aerodynamic than the gas-engined Expedition. Expect a change in proportions, with a short bonnet and more raked A- and D-pillars. Expect grilles with a smoother, textured surface instead of air intake holes, a sculpted hood, newly shaped running boards, heavily covered alloy wheels, and active aerodynamics.

Ford Expedition Electric teaser

On May 22, 2023, at the company’s capital markets day, Doug Field, Chief Advanced Product Development and Technology Officer, Ford Model e, Ford, revealed interesting details about the EV division’s second-gen, three-row EV in the Expedition segment. Unlike the F-150 Lightning, Field indicated the Expedition EV will be drastically different from the gas-powered Expedition.

At the same event, before Field got into the details, Ford President and CEO Jim Farley announced it as “a seven-passenger SUV that’s like your own personal bullet train.” Field said it’ll be “beautiful” and “unlike anything in the segment so far.” He also said that it’ll be longer and sleeker than the gas-powered Expedition.

Ford Expedition Electric design interior teaser

The Expedition Electric will be a model designed and engineered as an EV from the outset, not a conversion of the gas-powered Expedition. Otherwise, it would’ve needed a big battery pack with an energy capacity of around 150 kWh to deliver 300 miles of range, he added.

We could have converted an Expedition into an EV, but it wouldn’t have made for a very good EV and it wouldn’t have made for a very good Expedition. You’d have to put a really big battery in this vehicle in order to get just 300 miles of range on the highway, about 150 kilowatt hours of battery. That’s a big, expensive, and heavy battery. Doug Field, Chief Advanced Product Development and Technology Officer, Ford Model e, Ford (Ford Capital Markets Day 2023 on May 22, 2023)

Size of the Explorer, space of the Expedition

Ford’s future three-row SUV will take up the footprint of a midsize SUV, but offer the space levels of a full-size SUV. During Ford’s Q3 2023 earnings call, Ford’s CFO John Lawler, offered a brief idea of the sizing of the SUV, while taking a question on pricing and cost structure of future EV launches.

If you look at our three-row SUV, the way we thought about that our Gen-2 product was it’s going to have the exterior size of an Explorer and the interior space of an Expedition. John Lawler, Ford’s Chief Financial Officer, during Ford’s Q3 2023 earnings call, on October 26, 2023

24-inch wheels

The pure-electric Expedition will likely be available with wheels as big as 24 inches in diameter. According to a report Ford Authority released on May 25, 2023, Ford plans to offer the gas-powered Expedition with 24-inch wheels in the next (fifth) generation. It is common practice for automakers to ensure that their electric vehicles match or surpass the equipment level of their combustion-engined counterparts. Therefore, it is reasonable to expect the electric Expedition to feature wheels of the same size.

Models conceived as EVs typically have better component packaging, which frees more room for passengers (with longer wheelbase), for cargo (with a front trunk), and even wheels (with bigger wheel wells). EVs launched in the last couple of years are flaunting wheels an inch bigger than their ICE counterparts. General Motors, for example, offers 23- and 24-inch wheels on their latest full-size EVs like the Celestiq, Hummer EV twins, Silverado EV, and Sierra EV, also highlighting the growing preference for large wheels in the EV segment.

Specifications

Dedicated ev platform.

The Ford Expedition Electric will be based on a dedicated EV platform. We’re possibly looking at the same truck platform as various large other models, including a Lincoln Navigator Electric/ Lincoln Aviator Electric . That might be the next-gen skateboard that’s currently under development, which would mean that the Expedition Electric would be lighter and more space-efficient.

Range & Efficiency

Ford Expedition Electric platform teaser

The Ford Expedition Electric will have a 100 kWh battery pack that delivers an impressive range of 350 miles! That targeted range translates to a targeted energy consumption rating of 29 kWh/100 mi, which means it’d be more efficient than even the Ford Mustang Mach-E , which consumes as low as 33 kWh/100 mi. Charging through a DC fast-charger for less than 10 minutes will add 150 miles of range.

Field said when Ford Model E began the development of its second-gen, three-row EV, it started by changing the way it thinks about the tires with lower rolling resistance, reducing the weight, lowering the ride height, changing the aerodynamics, and the result is a different product.

It’s a three-row family vehicle with 350 miles of range that can still cover 300 miles when you’re cruising at 70 miles per hour. It’s got a battery that’s one-third smaller and lighter, thousands of dollars less expensive. Doug Field, Chief Advanced Product Development and Technology Officer, Ford Model e, Ford (Ford Capital Markets Day 2023 on May 22, 2023)

IonBoost battery

Ford’s future battery pack portfolio will include IonBoost lithium-ion, IonBoost Pro lithium iron phosphate, and solid-state units. IonBoost Pro battery packs will be for commercial models, while solid-state battery packs won’t be ready by the time Ford plans to begin production of the Expedition Electric. The company may use an IonBoost lithium-ion battery pack in the flagship electric SUV.

Ford BlueOvalSK Battery Park Kentucky

Development of the Ford Expedition Electric’s battery pack will likely take place at Ford Ion Park, a new facility dedicated to in-house research and development of battery and battery cell technology in Romulus (Michigan), USA. The Blue Oval will pump USD 100 million into this facility, which will help develop and produce Lithium ion and solid-state battery cells and arrays. Production at the USD 5.8 billion BlueOval SK Battery Park in Glendale (Kentucky) is expected to begin in 2025. BlueOval SK is a joint venture between Ford and SK On.

Bidirectional charging

The Ford Expedition Electric would feature the Ford Intelligent Backup Power and Pro Power Onboard that allows using the traction battery pack as a power source for home, home appliances, power tools, security systems, and other rechargeable electrified vehicles. In the F-150 Lightning, customers can offload 9.6 kW with Ford Intelligent Backup Power. Plus, Pro Power Onboard lets them supply power externally to electronics, tools, and appliances directly through built-in electrical outlets, with up to 2.4 kW available through the frunk and up to 7.2 kW through the outlets in the cab and bed.

Frunk (‘Mega Power Frunk’)

The Expedition Electric may have a massive front trunk or a frunk under the hood. The lockable extra cargo space area may consist of multiple electrical outlets, USB chargers, and a drainable floor that can do the duty of a food and beverage container. It may have enough space to store at least two carry-on bags, and one checked bag or two golf club sets.

Ford Expedition interior

Autonomous driving

BlueCruise would enable Level 2 hands-free driving on ‘Hands-Free Blue Zones’ across the U.S. and Canada. Currently, this feature is usable on more than 130,000 miles of prequalified divided highways across the two countries, but by the time the Expedition Electric arrives, it should have grown considerably. Ford may have Level 3 autonomous driving capability ready by that time and offer the same in the full-size electric SUV.

Level 3 autonomous driving won’t be possible by the time of the Expedition Electric’s launch. “As much as I want it to, we’re not going to deliver L3 in 2025,” Field said at Ford’s 2023 Capital Markets Day event. “It’s just too ambitious an undertaking,” he added.

FordPass is a smartphone app that lets customers monitor their vehicle and remotely control some of its functions. They can start/stop, lock/unlock, locate their vehicle, schedule a start, check its status, get roadside assistance and access to charging stations and use many more connected vehicle functions through the app.

Ford Power-Up

Software updates delivered over the air would fix many technical issues, bring technical improvements, and enable new features. With Ford Power-Up OTA updates, the vehicle keeps getting better throughout its life without needing a visit to the dealership.

Release date

Ford’s three-row electric SUV will arrive in 2025, Field revealed at Ford’s 2023 Capital Markets Day event. The market has started flooding with two-row electric SUVs, but the options for three-row electric SUVs are limited. Ford sees this as an opportunity, especially in the U.S., where automakers sell big family haulers that can comfortably accommodate up to eight adults in tens of thousands every year.

In 2023, Ford sold 73,396 units of the Expedition, while GM delivered 111,014 units of the Chevrolet Tahoe, 52,820 units of the Chevrolet Suburban, and 82,217 units of the GMC Yukon, and Stellantis shipped 29,149 units of the Jeep Wagoneer.

By 2025, we now expect there to be 45 EV models to be offered in the US in the small and medium utility segment. It will be a very saturated two-row EV market. Jim Farley, President and CEO, Ford (Q1 2023 earnings conference call on May 2, 2023)

During Ford’s Q1 2023 earnings conference call on May 2, 2023, Farley said the two-row EV category will get saturated in a few years. Three-row seating will allow the company to distinguish its EVs and make them more appealing to customers.

In contrast to two-row crossovers that we believe will be a very saturated market, we believe Model e can be highly differentiated in markets where we know the customer well, like the three-row utility space. Jim Farley, President and CEO, Ford (Q1 2023 earnings conference call on May 2, 2023)

TopElectricSUV says

The Ford Expedition Electric is poised to be a full-size three-row SUV offering a more spacious and comfortable interior for up to eight adults and featuring a highly digital cockpit and semi-autonomous driving functions that make those weekend adventures and other road trips effortless – all with zero tailpipe emissions. Plus, it should prove more useful than the gas model with several innovative features, like vehicle-to-home (V2H), for instance, which will make it an emergency power backup.

The featured image is a rendering of the Ford Expedition Electric that introduces Ford’s EV styling to the current SUV’s design. It is made for illustrative purpose, and does not preview the actual vehicle.

Your interaction and that of other users will be measured to know how many clicks on the ad led to a purchase.
  • You are one of very few to have clicked on an advertisement about an “international appreciation day” discount by an online gift shop within the app of a publisher. The publisher wants to have reports to understand how often a specific ad placement within the app, and notably the “international appreciation day” ad, has been viewed or clicked by you and other users, in order to help the publisher and its partners (such as agencies) optimise ad placements.
  • You have read a blog post about hiking on a mobile app of a publisher and followed a link to a recommended and related post. Your interactions will be recorded as showing that the initial hiking post was useful to you and that it was successful in interesting you in the related post. This will be measured to know whether to produce more posts on hiking in the future and where to place them on the home screen of the mobile app.
  • You were presented a video on fashion trends, but you and several other users stopped watching after 30 seconds. This information is then used to evaluate the right length of future videos on fashion trends.
  • The owner of an online bookstore wants commercial reporting showing the proportion of visitors who consulted and left its site without buying, or consulted and bought the last celebrity autobiography of the month, as well as the average age and the male/female distribution of each category. Data relating to your navigation on its site and to your personal characteristics is then used and combined with other such data to produce these statistics.
  • An advertiser wants to better understand the type of audience interacting with its adverts. It calls upon a research institute to compare the characteristics of users who interacted with the ad with typical attributes of users of similar platforms, across different devices. This comparison reveals to the advertiser that its ad audience is mainly accessing the adverts through mobile devices and is likely in the 45-60 age range.
  • A technology platform working with a social media provider notices a growth in mobile app users, and sees based on their profiles that many of them are connecting through mobile connections. It uses a new technology to deliver ads that are formatted for mobile devices and that are low-bandwidth, to improve their performance.
  • An advertiser is looking for a way to display ads on a new type of consumer device. It collects information regarding the way users interact with this new kind of device to determine whether it can build a new mechanism for displaying advertising on this type of device.
  • A travel magazine has published an article on its website about the new online courses proposed by a language school, to improve travelling experiences abroad. The school’s blog posts are inserted directly at the bottom of the page, and selected on the basis of your non-precise location (for instance, blog posts explaining the course curriculum for different languages than the language of the country you are situated in).
  • A sports news mobile app has started a new section of articles covering the most recent football games. Each article includes videos hosted by a separate streaming platform showcasing the highlights of each match. If you fast-forward a video, this information may be used to select a shorter video to play next.
  • An advertising intermediary delivers ads from various advertisers to its network of partnering websites. It notices a large increase in clicks on ads relating to one advertiser, and uses data regarding the source of the clicks to determine that 80% of the clicks come from bots rather than humans.
  • Clicking on a link in an article might normally send you to another page or part of the article. To achieve this, 1°) your browser sends a request to a server linked to the website, 2°) the server answers back (“here is the article you asked for”), using technical information automatically included in the request sent by your device, to properly display the information / images that are part of the article you asked for. Technically, such exchange of information is necessary to deliver the content that appears on your screen.

2021 Ford Expedition

Starting at .css-1ykuyyb{font-size:1.125rem;line-height:1.2;margin-left:0.25rem;}@media(min-width: 40.625rem){.css-1ykuyyb{color:#000000;}} $52,290.

2021 ford expedition front

  • Lows Plasticky interior trimmings, feels exactly as large as it is from behind the wheel, expensive upper trims.
  • Verdict Few large SUVs are as spacious, comfortable, and capable as the Expedition, but its price of entry has us expecting more luxury than it delivers.

What's New for 2021?

Ford's Co-Pilot360 Assist—a bundle of advanced driver-assistance features—is now available as an option on the XLT model for 2021. And the Expedition receives new wheel designs on all of its trims. The lineup also introduces a two-row-only XL STX base model that starts at $51,690. Based on spy photos , we expect the 2022 Expedition to undergo a mid-cycle refresh that brings a giant, vertical touchscreen infotainment system (likely a 15.5-inch display inherited from the Ford Mustang Mach-E EV ) as well as a more rugged trim level, possibly called Timberline.

Pricing and Which One to Buy

The price of the 2021 Ford Expedition / Expedition Max starts at $52,290 and goes up to $75,858 depending on the trim and options.

We'd exercise restraint when shopping for an Expedition, as the more you spend, the more the Expedition disappoints. The XLT model with the 202A package offers luxuries such as a motion-activated liftgate, remote start, heated and ventilated front seats, and a heated steering wheel. We would make one suggestion in the name of vanity: Swap the standard 18-inch wheels for a set of the attractive (and proportionally appropriate) 20-inch rollers to keep the Expedition XLT from looking too bargain-basement.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance

Motivating the Expedition is a twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V-6 and responsive 10-speed automatic transmission that pair with rear- or all-wheel drive. The XLT and Limited models have a 375-hp version of the V-6, but on the top-tier Platinum, it'll make 400 horsepower. While we haven't tested the base engine, it won't be any quicker than the 400-hp version we sampled on the short- and long-wheelbase models. All Expeditions employ an independent rear suspension that provides better ride and handling than the live-axle setups on Chevrolet and GMC alternatives. While passengers are comforted by its soft ride, the driver is penalized by ungainly handling and imprecise steering feel. Those who can afford the top-of-the-line Expedition owe it to themselves to check out luxury-branded rivals such as the BMW X7 or the Mercedes-Benz GLS-class . The Expedition can tow up to 9300 pounds, while the longer Expedition Max's rating is capped at 9000 pounds.

Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG

This class of hefty haulers certainly doesn't help preserve fossil fuels. Ford claims its EcoBoost engine (a twin-turbocharged V-6) is more efficient than a V-8, but the Expedition doesn't deliver on that promise. The rear-driver is rated by the EPA at 17 mpg city and 23 mpg highway; the all-wheel-drive version drops to 22 mpg highway. Both the regular-length Expedition and the longer Expedition Max delivered 20 mpg on our 200-mile highway fuel-economy route. While the 420-hp Yukon Denali fell short of its EPA estimate, too, it matched the Ford's real-world results.

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

The Expedition's interior has a square dashboard sporting large air vents and materials that improve with the trim level. Every Expedition boasts 15 cupholders and, apart from the base two-row-only XL STX model, a power-folding third-row seat. Our Platinum test vehicle featured niceties not available on lesser trims, including the multicontour front seats with a massage function, leather door-trim accents, real wood on the center console, and a steering wheel wrapped in premium leather. While it is otherwise splendid inside, the cabin's cheap-looking plastics are flagrant fouls and unacceptable for a vehicle that costs this much. Both models have spacious interiors and—unlike most rivals—its third row won't torture adults. A three-seat bench is standard for the second row, but you can spec a pair of captain's chairs if you want. The Max offers unbeatable interior cubby storage. Every model has a power-folding third row that can be controlled from the cargo area or back seats. Both second and third rows fold completely flat for a level floor, making it easier to load things.

Infotainment and Connectivity

The Expedition is an infotainment sanctuary, with numerous connectivity options and lots of available features. An 8.0-inch Sync 3 touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility and a 4G LTE mobile hotspot comes standard. Navigation plus real-time traffic and weather data costs extra. A rear-seat entertainment system is available but only on the Limited, King Ranch, and Platinum trims.

Safety and Driver-Assistance Features

Overall safety rating (nhtsa).

The 2021 Expedition earned a five-star crash-test rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration ( NHTSA ), but it hasn't been evaluated by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety ( IIHS ). It has all the latest driver-assistance tech , including standard automated emergency braking. Key safety features include:

  • Standard automated emergency braking with pedestrian detection
  • Available lane-keeping assist with lane-departure warning
  • Available adaptive cruise control

Warranty and Maintenance Coverage

Ford provides a solid warranty on the Expedition, beating even Mercedes-Benz in the powertrain department. However, no complimentary scheduled maintenance is offered.

  • Limited warranty covers three years or 36,000 miles
  • Powertrain warranty covers five years or 60,000 miles
  • No complimentary scheduled maintenance

Long wheelbase MAX models lose 100-200 lbs. of maximum towing capacity thanks to the extra length and weight of the vehicle.

Off-Road Capability

Ford offers several off-roading upgrades to the Expedition, including a new Timberline trim with 1-pedal throttle control. The available Terrain Management System on the Intelligent 4WD system helps the Expedition adapt to different terrain.

With seven different driver-selectable modes ranging from Normal to Grass/Gravel/Snow to Mud/Ruts, the Expedition’s software adjusts throttle response and torque delivery for optimal traction depending on the conditions.

The Timberline model is the most off-road-ready of all the Expedition trims. A specially tuned 3.5L EcoBoost delivers 440 horsepower and 510 lb-ft of torque to all four wheels. The vehicle has also been lifted to a maximum ground clearance of 10.6 inches, while underbody skid plates help protect the vital components underneath the vehicle.

Trail 1-Pedal drive works much like regenerative braking in an EV, delivering power to the wheels when pressed, and applying the brakes as it is released, allowing drivers to maintain ultimate control in difficult terrain. Ford’s Trail Control is also standard on the Timberline model and lets the driver select a speed for the vehicle to maintain. The system uses throttle and braking to adjust to the changing situation, think of it as an off-road cruise control.

10 Best SUVs For Towing

Best interior features of the year make model.

  • Plenty of legroom
  • Panoramic Vista Roof
  • Luxurious, high-quality materials
  • Advanced Infotainment System
  • Driver-Assist technologies, including BlueCruise
  • Versatile cargo space

There are nine different models to choose from in the Expedition lineup, each offering a unique style and options both inside and out. Interior space should not be a concern with this big SUV. Seating options allow for up to eight passengers with the center-row bench seat or seven with the second-row captains' chairs.

Third-row seats can be optioned with a power recline, while second-row seats allow for easy access to the back row with their tip-and-slide functionality. The available Panoramic Vista Roof opens up the interior with a large twin-panel glass skylight that spans over the first two rows.

Seats can be appointed in cloth, ActiveX synthetic leather, or different types of genuine leather, depending on the trim. The XLT and Timberline off-road models are the only trims to feature the easy-to-clean ActiveX synthetic leather seating, with the Timberline also using contrasting Tangerine stitching.

Limited, King Ranch, and Platinum trims all feature genuine leather seats, with the Platinum models also featuring a standard Active Motion Massage for the front two seats. Heating and cooling is accomplished through a standard trip-zone climate control system with redundant controls in the second row for the rear seating area.

Technology has become a battleground in modern family vehicles, so it should be no surprise that there are a lot of features. The driver is treated to either a standard 8-inch driver information screen on XL-Limited models, to a large 12.4-inch full-digital gauge cluster optional on Timberline and Limited, and standard on King Ranch and Platinum.

Infotainment duties are handled by either the standard 12-inch screen running Ford’s SYNC 4 software to the larger 15.5-inch vertical screen also used in the Mustang Mach E and F-150 Lightning . A 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot is standard on all models, though it will require a subscription.

The standard sound system is a 6-speaker unit, but Ford offers both a 12-speaker and 22-speaker system powered by Bang & Olufsen that includes a subwoofer in the rear cargo area. There is also no shortage of connectivity for phones and other electronic devices with up to six USB-C charging ports throughout the vehicle and a Qi wireless charging pad in the front row.

Ford even offers Amazon Fire TV with its available rear seat Entertainment System and headrest-mounted dual screen setup.

Interior Dimensions

Anti-lock brakes are standard in all Expedition models, along with duel stage front airbags, front side impact airbags, and Safety Canopy airbags that extend to the third row. Rear doors feature child-safety locks, prohibiting the doors from being opened from inside the vehicle when engaged, and are also standard on all models.

LATCH points for child safety seats are also available throughout the rear of the vehicle. In the event of an accident, the SOS Post-Crash Alert System can contact emergency officials.

Driver Assistance Features

There is no shortage of standard and available Driver Assistance Features in the Ford Expedition. BLIS Blind Spot Information System sensors are standard on all trims and detect if anything is in the blind spot of the Expedition, including a rear cross-traffic alert.

When the heavy-duty trailering package is selected, BLIS also takes into account the length of a trailer connected to the vehicle when alerting the driver of a potential hazard. Parking this big SUV is made easier with the optional Active Park Assist System that can park the vehicle itself and assist when pulling out of a parking space.

Cruise control ranges from basic cruise to intelligent adaptive cruise control with traffic sign recognition and lane centering assist, to a full hands-free experience with BlueCruise 1.0. Other driver assistance features include lane keeping, pre-collision assist with emergency braking, and Pro Trailer Backup Assist which improves the ease of backing up with a trailer connected.

  • Adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go
  • Pre-Collision Assist with Automatic Emergency Braking and Forward Collision Warning
  • Lane-Keeping System
  • Enhanced active park assist

2008 Ford Expedition: A Comprehensive Guide To Maintenance Costs, Reliability, And Average Prices

The Ford Expedition warranty coverage is broken down into different segments, each with its own expiration in years owned and miles driven. Bumper-to-bumper coverage essentially covers anything on the vehicle and is the first to expire. Powertrain warranties cover the engine: all internal lubricated parts, cylinder block, cylinder heads, electrical fuel pump, powertrain control module, engine mounts, flywheel, injection pump, manifold (exhaust and intake), manifold bolts, oil pan, oil pump, seals and gaskets, engine thermostat, engine thermostat housing, timing chain cover, timing chain (gears or belt), turbocharger/supercharger unit, valve covers, water pump.

Transmission: all internal parts, clutch cover, seals and gaskets, torque converter, transfer case (including all internal parts), transmission case, transmission mounts (front and rear).

Rear-wheel drive: axle shafts, rear bearings, center support bearing, drive axle housing (including all internal parts), drive shaft, retainers, supports, seals and gaskets, universal and constant velocity joints.

Four-Wheel/All-Wheel Drive : axle shafts, support bracket, bearings (front and rear), center support bearing, drive shafts, final drive housing (including all internal parts), hubs-automatic front locking (four-wheel drive), locking rings (four-wheel drive), seals and gaskets, universal and constant velocity joints.

The Ford Expedition’s rivals include the segment leader Chevrolet Tahoe as well as the newcomer Wagoneer , along with the Nissan Armada and Toyota Sequoia. These vehicles are all body-on-frame three-row SUVs that are generally better for towing with stronger frames that can withstand larger loads behind the vehicle. Other spacious three-row vehicles that could easily be cross-shopped include Toyota Grand Highlander, Chevrolet Traverse, Honda Pilot, as well as Ford’s own Explorer SUVs.

How The Ford Expedition Compares To The Chevrolet Tahoe

The Ford Expedition has long played second fiddle to the Chevrolet Tahoe in overall sales, but that does not mean sales volume should sway a buying decision. Both vehicles are big, body-on-frame SUVs that are more than capable of moving up to 8 people and their gear, towing heavy loads, or venturing off the beaten path. The Tahoe can afford to give buyers more choices of powertrains thanks to its sale dominance, however.

Available with two different V-8 options or an inline six-cylinder diesel engine, the Tahoe caters to a wider variety of shopper needs. The Tahoe also takes comfort up a notch with the Magnetic Ride Control adaptive suspension, technology that trickles down from luxury-brand vehicles that set it apart from the Expedition's more traditional coil-over spring suspension. Pricing starts lower on the Ford, with the two-row XL STX model that seats five, but the Expedition Platinum trim is a few thousand more than the Tahoe's top High Country trim.

How The Ford Expedition Compares To The Toyota Sequoia

Toyota has launched their third generation of the large Sequoia SUV for the 2023 model year and shares many components with their full-size Tundra pickup, including its turbocharged and hybrid powertrain. All new Sequoia models are hybrids which really help with overall power, as well as fuel economy over the competition from the Ford Expedition. According to fueleconomy.gov, buyers can expect about a 3 MPG gain over the Expedition when selecting a comparable Sequoia.

The trade off that Toyota engineers made for the hybrid powertrain comes in the form of limited cargo space. The hybrid battery is stored under the third row, which makes the rearmost seat a tighter fit for taller passengers. Toyota did add a sliding mechanism to their third row, allowing for the choice between more passenger space or more rear cargo space behind the back seat.

That cargo space, however, is the most cramped among other large SUVs and Sequoia does not offer an extended wheelbase option like the Expedition Max. Much like the Chevrolet, the Sequoia does offer adaptive suspension choices with a rear air suspension option and the Sequoia starts just above $60,000 for the base model, but is quickly eclipsed by the higher trims of the Expedition.

2024 Toyota Sequoia

Horsepower 437 hp

MSRP $61,275-$81,265

The Ford Expedition does have an entry into many different price brackets for the full-size SUV market . The base XL STX is the clear value offering of the segment, forgoing its third row of seats and other creature comforts to start at $55,525. XLT adds a power-folding third row and the option of the longer wheelbase for more cargo space while not increasing the price of entry above $60,000.

Limited adds some style with 20-inch wheels and a panoramic glass roof, but it comes at a hefty price increase of a $68,410 starting price. Timberline, like XL STX, only comes in short wheelbase form and bumps the price above $70,000 thanks to all the added off-road goodies.

The two top trims of the Ford Expedition offer luxury in two distinct ways. The $78,465 King Ranch provides a western-themed luxury palette with its rich Del Rio leather and unique interior stitching. The Platinum trim starts at $80,696 but adds luxurious touches like a 22-speaker B&O Sound System, massaging front seats, and Ford’s BlueCruise hands-free highway driving technology.

2022 Ford Expedition: Performance, Price, And Photos

Ford keeps the engine packaging fairly simple, only offering the one twin-turbocharged V6 engine, but in various power outputs. The difference in fuel economy returns will come down to the driveline of the vehicle and whether or not it is RWD or 4x4.

Rear-wheel drive Expeditions are rated by the EPA at 17 MPG in the city, 23 MPG on the highway, and 19 MPG combined. Selecting a 4x4 only compromises one MPG across the test cycle. The off-road Timberline trim, thanks to its different tires, ride height, and various other features, sacrifices another MPG for an EPA rating of 16 MPG in the city, 19 MPG on the highway, and 17 MPG combined.

The Ford Expedition is a solid entry into the large SUV segment. It shares a platform with the best-selling vehicle in the United States, the F-150 pickup, which should make it a contender for the best-selling in its segment as well. However, Chevrolet offers more variety when it comes to engine, suspension, and interior choices, making it the fan-favorite.

Ford makes a strong play at being both the value entry with the XL STX at $55,525. However, Nissan’s Armada S and SV models still undercut the base Expedition.

The top trims of the Expedition can easily cost more than rivals from any other automaker, meaning there is merit to shopping around, but what Ford does really bring to the table that only Jeep’s Wagoneer can match for family-friendliness is the tilt-and-slide second-row seats that allow access to the third-row of seats with a child safety seat still installed in the second row.

Couple that with impressive towing capacity and an extended wheelbase MAX variant, and you could have a capable and comfortable cruiser for a family full of adventurers.

2024 Ford Expedition: A Comprehensive Guide On Features, Specs, And Pricing

Hybrids Ready for Patrol

Police vehicles with hybrid gas-electric engines will save law enforcement agencies money and cut emissions. More importantly, they can do the job.

David Griffith 2017 Headshot

This summer Ford is going to roll out the most innovative police vehicle ever produced, the 2020 Ford Police Interceptor Utility with hybrid powertrain. Based on the 2020 Explorer SUV, the pursuit-rated 2020 PI Utility is not the first purpose-built hybrid patrol vehicle—Ford introduced its Police Responder hybrid sedan in 2017—but it is the first one big enough to accommodate all the gear needed in contemporary police operations. And if the 2020 PI Utility hybrid proves as popular with agencies as Ford expects, it's likely to usher in an era of hybrid patrol vehicles for the next decade or so until most law enforcement vehicles become fully electric.

Despite widespread acceptance of hybrid gas-electric vehicles in the consumer market, the police market is different. Some officers and agencies are reluctant to give up their gas-powered V-8s for this 21st century engine tech. These officers want Ford to prove its hybrid can go fast, stop even faster, and do the job. And their agencies want proof of performance plus economic benefits to offset the additional cost of the hybrid powertrain.

To prove the 2020 PI Utility hybrid's performance to the police audience, Ford took the new SUV to last September's Michigan State Police evaluations . And it made quite an impression.

It goes real fast. The hybrid SUV hit 137 mph in the top speed testing. The only pursuit-rated sedans that hit faster top speeds during the test were the Dodge Charger 5.7-liter Hemi at 149 mph and the Dodge Charger 3.6-liter at 141 mph. The only pursuit-rated SUV that topped the PI Utility hybrid was the Ford 3.0-liter EcoBoost PI Utility at 150 mph.

Of course top speed is not the most important performance issue for a patrol vehicle that is going to be driven in environments ranging from major city streets to rural highways. Most agencies are more concerned with the acceleration and closing speed of the vehicle. The PI Utility hybrid, which comes standard with all-wheel drive (AWD), had a 0-60 mph time of 7.27 seconds at the MSP test. That's better than most standard gasoline engine patrol SUVs. The only patrol-rated SUV that accelerated quicker in MSP's 0-60 mph testing was Ford's PI Utility 3.0-liter EcoBoost SUV with AWD. EcoBoost engines achieve their impressive performance with turbos and direct injection.

The closing speed performance of the PI Utility hybrid as measured by its 0-100 mph time was also impressive at 17.69 seconds. That's not as fast as a Hemi Charger, but it outmatches every pursuit-rated SUV other than that blistering fast 3.0-liter PI Utility EcoBoost, which can hit 100 mph from a standing start in just under 14 seconds.

There was a time when hybrid meant great gas mileage but less than stellar performance and not a lot of cargo space. Not anymore, says Steve Tyler, Ford police brand marketing manager. "With hybrids people are used to making some kind of tradeoff. The most exciting thing about the 2020 Ford Police Interceptor Utility hybrid is there are no tradeoffs. You don't lose any interior passenger or cargo room. You also get greater horsepower, torque, and top speed. In addition, you get significant fuel economy."

Stopping Power

Performance for a patrol vehicle or any vehicle is not just about speed. It's about how quickly the vehicle can be stopped. This is extremely critical for a law enforcement vehicle, which tends to be driven harder than a consumer vehicle.

The new hybrid Ford SUV was also a star in MSP's brake testing. In testing where the vehicles were brought to a stop from a speed of 60 mph, the PI Utility hybrid came to a complete rest at 132.4 feet. That was better than any other pursuit-rated SUVs except the Dodge Durango Pursuit 3.6-liter at 128.8 feet and the Ford Police Interceptor EcoBoost at 131.5 feet.

Hybrid vehicles tend to stop so well because they use a regenerative braking system, which means that the electric motor of a hybrid vehicle reverses its spin, slowing the vehicle when the driver applies the brakes. This braking action turns the motor into a generator that helps keep the vehicle's batteries charged. In addition, the vehicle has anti-lock disc brakes with calipers, pads, and rotors.

Saving Green

One of the reasons that hybrid patrol vehicles will become much more common in the next few years is government environmental (green) initiatives. That's a great benefit of hybrid engine technology. But hybrid patrol vehicles can also be part of another type of green initiative, the type that saves money for law enforcement agencies.

Hybrid vehicles generally cost a little more money at initial purchase. But the economics of running hybrids should more than make up for that initial outlay.

Ford says Fuel savings from the 2020 PI Utility are significant. The combined highway and city MPG is 24 compared with 17 for the 2018, a 40% increase in mileage. But increased MPG is not the only way the hybrid PI Utility can save agencies on fuel costs. The real fuel expenditure in law enforcement patrol operations is leaving the vehicle running while it's parked at a scene so that it can keep the battery charged to run lights, radios, air conditioning, computers, and other stuff that draws current. The PI Utility hybrid can do that without the engine running. It uses the hybrid batteries and if the charge starts to get low on the batteries it will run the engine just long enough to give them a boost. Ford calculates that the savings over idling a gas engine combined with the MPG increase will save agencies that adopt the PI Utility hybrid $3,500 per vehicle per year. You can go to https://www.ford.com/police-vehicles/police-interceptor/hybrid-utility/calculator/ for more information.

The New York City Police Department has been running consumer hybrid cars and SUVs as patrol vehicles for almost 10 years. Deputy Commissioner Robert Martinez who commands the NYPD's vehicle fleet operations believes hybrid powertrains are well suited to law enforcement operations because of the amount of time patrol vehicles spend at idle. "Even out in the country, law enforcement vehicles spend as much or more time at idle than they ever do being driven on the highway," he says.

Another way that hybrids save agencies money is that regenerative braking greatly reduces wear and tear on brake components. Martinez says the brake components on the NYPD's hybrid vehicle last the life of the vehicle.

The 2020 Police Interceptor Utility hybrid comes standard with all-wheel drive and is suited to urban and rural patrol.

1,800 Hybrids

Martinez is probably the nation's most authoritative expert on the use of hybrids as law enforcement vehicles. Out of the approximately 20,000 vehicles in the NYPD's fleet, 1,800 are hybrids. And the department has been running hybrids for 10 years.

It all started with taxi cabs, according to Martinez. He says he noticed that the city's taxi companies were replacing their Ford Crown Victorias with hybrids and had been doing so for a couple of years. So Martinez, who was then the department's director of fleet services, ordered 60 hybrid Nissan Altima sedans for the fleet. "I figured if they could hold up for years as New York City taxis, they could certainly do the job as NYPD patrol cars," he says.

Of course those first hybrids acquired by the NYPD were not designed to be police cars, nor were they pursuit rated. The pursuit capability was not an issue, Martinez says, because the NYPD has a "no pursuit" policy. The Altimas not being designed as police cars was another matter. They required some work.

Martinez says his fleet maintenance crews had to replace the Nissan's seats with vinyl-covered seats and install the police equipment such as lights and sirens, which required additional wiring. In addition, Setina Manufacturing also made special prisoner cages that fit the NYPD's Altimas.

Soon after those first NYPD hybrid Altimas hit the street, Ford started making a hybrid sedan for the consumer market, the Fusion hybrid, that Martinez thought would be a better police car than the Altima. "We started using hybrid Fusions both as marked and unmarked cars," he says.

The NYPD's hybrid fleet grew from there. Martinez says he has acquired Toyota Priuses, hybrid Chevrolet Tahoes, and a wide variety of other hybrid vehicles for the department. He even says his success with the hybrid Fusion in the NYPD's fleet helped convince Ford that the time was right for true pursuit-rated hybrid police vehicles. "I started some dialog with Ford's engineers about the benefits of the hybrid as a patrol car. 'It can do the job, and it can do it well,'" he says he told them.

That discussion has now come full circle as Martinez is acquiring Ford's new pursuit-capable hybrid vehicles for the NYPD fleet. He's even driving a 2019 Police Responder hybrid (based on the Fusion hybrid) sedan that Ford has loaned to the department. "We brought it down to our test track and training facility where one of the trainers drove it and came back with great results," he says.

The NYPD is now buying 160 of the new Police Responder hybrid sedans, and Martinez says he is very excited about the 2020 PI Utility hybrid with AWD. "We get a lot of bad weather here in New York City," he says. "We had Super Storm Sandy, big snowstorms, ice storms, flooding. Years ago during snowstorms I had to open our maintenance shops and call in crews to put chains on the vehicles. Now with all-wheel drive SUVs, I no longer have to do that. The vehicles can handle the weather without chains."

Even though consumer vehicles might be a little cheaper to buy than pursuit-capable patrol vehicles, Martinez has no plans to continue the practice of buying retail hybrids and customizing them into police vehicles. "I haven't really done a price comparison," he says. "These task-built vehicles meet our mission better because they were designed to do so." He points out that purpose-built patrol vehicles already have the wiring for police equipment, vinyl seats, cages, and even their computers are "tweaked for police driving."

The NYPD has 13 fleet shops and 400 employees and it is fully capable of upfitting the new hybrids it has ordered from Ford. But Martinez says it's the department's practice to have its vehicle delivered ready for duty. "We have the upfitter do everything, including the lights, and the markings," he says.

Martinez foresees an NYPD fleet that becomes more and more hybrid and electric in the coming decade. Asked how the officers who use the vehicles feel about that, he tells the following story: "Shortly after we introduced hybrid patrol cars about 10 years ago, the Mayor's Office had staff go out and ask the officers driving them what they thought about driving hybrids. They did not know they were driving hybrids. And that's the way it should be, the hybrid vehicle should perform the same or better than the gas patrol vehicle."
