Hiking up the Schlossberg: Panoramic Views of Freiburg

For nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts, a hike up the Schlossberg is a must-do activity in Freiburg. The Schlossberg is a hill located in the heart of the city and offers panoramic views of Freiburg and its surroundings. The hike up the hill is relatively easy and can be done in about 30 minutes.

Once you reach the top, you will be rewarded with breathtaking views of the city, the Black Forest, and the Vosges Mountains in the distance. There are also several viewpoints and picnic areas where you can relax and take in the scenery. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can also explore the Schlossberg Tower, a medieval tower that offers even higher views of the city.

Relaxing in the City’s Parks: Seepark and Stadtgarten

Freiburg is known for its green spaces and parks, which offer a peaceful escape from the bustling city center. Two of the most popular parks in Freiburg are Seepark and Stadtgarten.

Seepark is a large park located on the outskirts of the city, surrounding a beautiful lake. The park offers plenty of recreational activities such as walking and cycling paths, picnic areas, and a beach where you can swim or relax. There are also several cafes and restaurants where you can grab a bite to eat.

Stadtgarten, on the other hand, is a smaller park located in the city center. It features beautifully manicured gardens, fountains, and sculptures. The park is a popular spot for locals to relax, have a picnic, or simply enjoy a leisurely stroll. During the summer months, Stadtgarten also hosts outdoor concerts and events.

Visiting the Freiburg Cathedral: A Gothic Masterpiece

No visit to Freiburg would be complete without a visit to its iconic cathedral, known as the Freiburg Minster. This stunning Gothic masterpiece is one of the most important landmarks in the city and is a must-see for architecture enthusiasts.

The Freiburg Minster dates back to the 13th century and took over 300 years to complete. Exploring the City’s Markets: Münstermarkt and Wochenmarkt

One of the best ways to experience the local culture and cuisine in Freiburg is by visiting its markets. The Münstermarkt and Wochenmarkt are two of the most popular markets in the city.

The Münstermarkt is located in the heart of the old town and is known for its fresh produce, flowers, and local specialties. Here you can find everything from fruits and vegetables to cheese, bread, and honey. The market is also a great place to pick up souvenirs such as handmade crafts and traditional German products.

The Wochenmarkt, on the other hand, is a larger market that takes place every Saturday. It offers a wider variety of products, including clothing, household items, and antiques. The market is a favorite among locals and visitors alike, and is a great place to immerse yourself in the vibrant atmosphere of Freiburg.

Sampling Local Cuisine: Street Food and Wine Tasting

No visit to Freiburg would be complete without sampling the local cuisine. The city is known for its hearty and flavorful dishes, which are influenced by both German and French culinary traditions.

One of the best ways to experience the local cuisine is by trying street food. Freiburg has a vibrant street food scene, with vendors offering a wide variety of dishes such as bratwurst, pretzels, and flammkuchen (a thin-crust pizza topped with cream, onions, and bacon). You can find these street food stalls in various locations throughout the city, especially around the old town and the markets.

Another must-try in Freiburg is the local wine. The region surrounding Freiburg is known for its vineyards and produces some excellent wines. Many wineries offer wine tastings where you can sample different varieties and learn about the winemaking process. This is a great way to experience the local culture and indulge in some delicious wines.

Enjoying Cultural Events: Freiburg Summer Festival and Christmas Markets

Freiburg is a city that loves to celebrate, and there are several cultural events that take place throughout the year. Two of the most popular events are the Freiburg Summer Festival and the Christmas Markets.

The Freiburg Summer Festival takes place in July and August and features a wide range of cultural events such as concerts, theater performances, dance shows, and art exhibitions. The festival attracts both locals and visitors and offers a unique opportunity to experience the vibrant cultural scene of Freiburg.

The Christmas Markets, on the other hand, are a beloved tradition in Freiburg. Freiburg Free Walking Tour - All You Need to Know BEFORE You Go (2024)

International Greeter Association

Freiburg Greeters ‎‎‎‎‎‎‎‎‎‎ Free Private Walking Tour with a local

Freiburg

Book a free private walk in Freiburg with a Greeter.

Meet a local volunteer

Our core value #1   reads "Greeters are volunteers, a friendly face for those visiting a city."

It's true: our Greeters love their city or town and they are proud to share this with guests.

How could you better discover the most interesting spots of a place?

Mini group, maximum six people

Our core value #2 reads "Greeters welcome individuals and may serve small groups of up to six people."

The reason is that each Greet should be an opportunity to talk to each other and that seems impossible in bigger groups.

Also important: we do not mingle people from different requests but serve only you (and your friends).

Free service, no tipping

Our core value #3 reads "Meeting a Greeter is free of charge."

We do not follow a "give what you think is ok (but please give)" strategy. Greeters honestly do not like any tipping because what they give comes from their heart not because of any tipping expectation.

If you feel you would like to support the Greeters as a whole you should find a way to support the local Greeter organization (our our association) to keep the project running.

The 12 best things to do in Freiburg, Germany’s greenest city

Couple shopping at an open-air market in Freiburg, Germany

Freiburg's open-air market is one of many rewarding stops in this famously sunny city © AscentXmedia / Getty Images

With the enviable claim to fame of being Germany’s sunniest city, Freiburg is also one of its most eco-friendly.

Ever since a protest by residents in 1975 halted the construction of a nuclear generator on nearby farmland, the city has been a beacon of sustainability and citizen-led action. From cycle paths to communal gardens, and from a town hall clad entirely in solar panels to a tangible enthusiasm for local produce and outdoor pursuits, everything in this youthful University town is done with a conscience.

But Freiburg still showcases everything there is to love about Germany's smaller cities, from brightly painted half-timbered houses lining a cobblestone square to rowdy breweries serving up full beer mugs and huge schnitzels and ornate medieval gates guarding the walled city.

If you’re looking for a German getaway where it's easy to keep on top of your carbon footprint, look no further. Here's our pick of the top things to do in Freiburg.

Pedal along the Dreisam

Freiburg is a paradise for cyclists, with more than 400km (250 miles) of dedicated bike paths that crisscross the town and its flanking forests and villages. In fact, with twice as many bikes as cars, you'll feel like the odd one out if don't follow the lead of locals and saddle up. You can rent a city bike using the convenient Frelo bike-share scheme, and drop it off at any of dozens of parking stations scattered throughout the Freiburg area (rates start from €1 for 30 minutes).

Look out for the blue bicycle logo that marks the route of the FR1, a dedicated bike highway that straddles the Dreisam River. Starting in the old town, this lovely transect sails past community gardens, the old football stadium, sculpture parks, the Mundenhof animal sanctuary and plenty of street art. Take a pit stop at Cafe Extrablatt and fuel up on their popular weekend buffet breakfasts or grab a coffee before you pedal on your way.

Cheer on the local soccer team at the SC Stadium

Freiburg doesn't take itself too seriously, until the local football (soccer) team runs onto the pitch that is. If you happen to be in town when SC Freiburg are playing, try to snag tickets to a game. It's quite an experience – not only for the supercharged atmosphere, but also to check out the team's admirable commitment to sustainability.

Germany’s first completely solar-powered football ground, Europa Park Stadium was completed in late 2021 after the Bundesliga club outgrew their old home ground. The 37,000 seat stadium is fitted out with charging spots for electric vehicles, e-bikes and e-scooters and has almost 4,000 bicycle parking spots, and it's on track to become climate neutral.

If you can’t score tickets, don a red scarf and join supporters at a local pub – Heimliche Kneipe (Secret Pub) and O'Kelly's Irish pub both attract a sporting crowd.

Fly high in the Schauinslandbahn cable car

Climb aboard the Schauinslandbahn , Germany’s longest loop cable car, and glide to the top of  1,220m (4212ft) Schauinsland – the name translates, appropriately, to "look into the country." The 10-minute ride is breathtaking, but the views are even better from the top. Admire the panorama, visit the mining museum or walk amongst the pines and soak up the fresh mountain air.

Adventure lovers can cruise downhill on the 8km (5 mile) off-road scooter track , one of Europe’s longest. When it’s time to warm up, there’s nothing better than cozying up near the crackling fire as you take in the superb snowy views of the Rhine Valley from Die Bergstation restaurant (the fondue comes highly recommended).

View from the Schauinsland tower over peaceful countryside

Dip your toes in the Bächle

Wandering through the medieval old town, make sure you keep your feet dry or you might end up marrying a local, or so the local folklore goes. The watercourses that happily single travelers need to avoid are Freiburg's "Bächle" – long, open runnels flowing with clean water that run along many of the town’s streets.

These historic channels served as drainage in medieval times but and after the introduction of modern sewer systems, they were preserved as a nostalgic reminder of Freiburg's long history. Most importantly, the flow of clean water from the Dreisam helps cool the urban microclimate, so don’t be afraid to slip off your shoes and dip your toes in the cool water. Who knows, you might just find a new spouse!

Shop sustainably in the Sedan district

You won't find any of the big brands in this charming shopping district just south of the old town. Instead, the focus is on small-scale sustainable shopping. While you explore, order a coffee at Elephant Beans , where direct-sourced beans are roasted on-site, or grab a bite to eat at social enterprise Strandcafe, where traditional recipes are prepared by refugees using regional organic produce.

When it comes to the shopping, stop in at Glaskiste , a wholesome supermarket with a strict no-plastic policy, for local produce. Just around the corner, you’ll find beautiful organic clothing at Zündstoff’s corner boutique.

Make four-legged friends at Mundenhof

Animal lovers and families with kids in tow will love the Mundenhof animal sanctuary, set on 38 hectares of open greenery. You can get close to over 30 species of free-roaming domestic animals, including camels, horses, goats and cattle from all over the world. The sanctuary also has an extensive program caring for endangered animals such as bison, long-tailed macaques and gibbons.

Visitors can accompany the keepers on their daily feeding rounds from 2:30pm from March to October, and kids will also love getting their hands dirty in the educational on-site petting zoo known as KonTiKi. All the hay and grain needed to feed the animals is grown on the surrounding land – this is how every zoo should operate! Best of all, entry is free, but donations are welcome.

The Gothic-style architecture of Freiburger Munster

Sip Black Forest wine in a pop-up wine tavern

Freiburg offers rich pickings for wine lovers. Many of the region's vintners produce their wines in small batches that are hard to sell to restaurants or supermarkets. Instead, they set up their own pop-up wine taverns in garages, cellars and lounge rooms, and serve their wine alongside simple German fare. But there's a catch – these straussenwirtschaften (seasonal wine taverns), are only permitted to open for 16 weeks of the year, so they hang a big broom out front when they’re open for business.

Locals go pretty wild around April when spargelsaison (white asparagus season) begins – there’s nowhere better to try this tender delicacy than at Griestal-Strausse , a local winery in the hills outside Freiburg. Outside of asparagus season, try the kürbiscremesuppe (pumpkin cream soup) or the flammkuchen , a crispy, pizza-like cheese-topped bread typical of the region.

Explore Vauban’s utopian society

Wandering through the progressive suburb of Vauban offers a glimpse of how far-reaching environmental consciousness is here. The first clue is the lack of cars, with parking spots replaced by communal green spaces. Then you'll notice that the houses are all low-energy buildings, using solar cells or woodchip-fuelled generators for power.

Then, there are the co-op supermarkets, organic cafes, cute playgrounds and the community petting zoo. As you wander, you'll spot rooftop gardens, food-sharing pantries, organic waste digesters, conflict-resolution workshops and bike paths. Decide for yourself if this is a glimpse into Europe's bright future, or a one-off utopian dream!

Visit Freiburg's bustling produce market

At the heart of the city, Münsterplatz (Cathedral Square) is dominated by a 13th-century gothic tower and the 11th-century Freiburger Münster and filled by a daily farmers market, except for Sunday. Exclusively reserved for produce from the region, the market proudly displays delectable fresh fruit and vegetables, cheese and cold meats, crafts and flowers.

Don’t leave without trying the legendary lange rote (literally "Long Red") – a crispy, 35cm (14in) pork sausage doused in mustard. Get here early to sample a piece of the famous käsekuchen (cheesecake) from Stefans ; just look out for the bright yellow van.

View over Freiburg's historic market square

Take in the views from Schlossberg

Wherever you are in Freiburg, you can see the mountains and the forest rising outside town, but there’s no better vantage point than the top of the tree-covered hill known as Schlossberg ("Castle Hill"). Rest your legs and jump into the cable car, which will whisk you up to a cozy beer garden in three minutes, or work off last night’s schnitzel and take an hour-long hike to the summit, stopping for a refreshing German ale en route.

At the top, push on and climb an extra 400 steps to reach the top of the observation tower, perched above the trees with panoramic views of the Black Forest, the Rhine plain and the old town below. In winter, the trees are often dusted with snow, while summer promises epic sunsets. At the end of July, Schlossberg transforms into a giant stage as live bands and DJs take over the beer garden and surrounding areas for the annual Schlossberg Festival.

Get wet to cool down or warm up in Freiburg

Whether you come to Freiburg in summer or winter, make sure you pack your swimsuit. When the weather is hot, join the locals as they cool off in the Dreisam river in the town center, or dip in the Opfinger or Dietenbachsee lakes, just a short tram ride out of town.

When it’s too cold or wet for sightseeing, warm your bones in the therapeutic waters of Keidel Mineral Thermal Spa . Mineral-rich thermal water from a local spring will leave you feeling rejuvenated while back and neck jets release your tight muscles. There’s also a sauna, but it's communal and clothing free, as is the German tradition. Visit mid-week to avoid the crowds.

Raise a glass to Freiburg's beer brewing history

German beer is renowned for its purity and flavor thanks to the Reinheitsgebot, an ancient beer law that limits brewers to using only four ingredients: malted grains, hops, water and yeast. Taste the results for yourself at Ganter Brewery and Feierling Brewery , which have been keeping locals refreshed since the 18th century.

Both breweries are still run by their respective families, and a tour of Ganter is a great way to learn more about how they balance tradition with modern technology. End with a beer tasting and snacks in the beer garden. You’ll either be horrified or thrilled to hear they offer a very special local drop, Weir – a half beer and half wine concoction. Prost!

Aside from the experts below, Golfbet Insider Rob Bolton breaks down the field at the Masters Tournament in this week's edition of Power Rankings .

Betting picks

WILL GRAY (Lead, Fantasy & Betting)

  • Winner: Scottie Scheffler (+400) – It’s not sexy, but I’ve spent too much time trying to rationalize a pick on someone else. At the end of the day, Scheffler was red-hot heading into his 2022 Masters triumph – and he’s playing materially better this time around.
  • Top 10: Ludvig Åberg (+225) – We all know the trends against first-time winners, but they don’t apply to the finish markets. Åberg led the Valero field in SG: Tee-to-Green last week and has all the skills required to contend in his major championship debut.
  • Longshot: Russell Henley (+6000) – The former Georgia Bulldog finished T4 here a year ago and has been known to heat up on the greens from time to time. Two top-5s in his last three starts show signs of promise.
  • H2H: Chris Kirk (-120) over Keegan Bradley – There aren’t a ton of course comps for Augusta National, but there are some undeniable parallels with the terrain of Kapalua. Expect the Sentry champ to play well, having finished T23 here last year, while Bradley has missed three of four cuts entering the week.

BEN EVERILL (Senior writer, Fantasy & Betting)

  • Winner: Xander Schauffele (+1600) – Look, we all know Scheffler has the chance to take this tournament and run with it but my process of elimination story brought me a winner last year and I’m banking it can do it again. Schauffele is ready to contend again… and you have to be knocking on the door to eventually be let in. Back off my blacklist and into the furnace!
  • Top 10: Sahith Theegala (+320) – I really like Theegala as an outright option here over the next few years. T9 a year ago with a hot finish and another year wiser to his game. He still has more foul balls off the tee than I’d like but if he can get away with those this week he’s a chance.
  • Longshot: Jason Day +6600 – Longshots don’t win the Masters and my campaign to move the threshold to +4000 this week fell on deaf ears (Zalatoris, Finau, Smith…). But how can I not plump for the man who – in his prime – had me declaring he’d win two green jackets in his lifetime? Multiple chances in the past… why not another.
  • Head to Head: Shane Lowry (-110) over Collin Morikawa – Lowry’s Tee-to-Green game has been good of late whereas Morikawa is in a ball-striking slump compared to his usual high standards. This is as much a Morikawa fade as anything else.

CHRIS BREECE (Senior Content Manager Golfbet)

  • Winner: Scottie Scheffler (+400) – I’ll be that guy. My three finalists were him, Spieth and Schauffele. It came down to who I trusted most to win. And it’s not even close.
  • Top 10: Matt Fitzpatrick (+275) – I’m staying patient and not backing off my support of him. He had the best weekend of anyone in San Antonio and I still feel like he has great golf ahead of him.
  • Longshot: Max Homa (+5500) – I know what you’re thinking. However, name me a player with more talent/star power whose odds are above +5000.
  • H2H: Shane Lowry (-110) over Collin Morikawa – I almost picked Lowry for the top 10. Generally plays well here and has been in good form.

MATT DELVECCHIO (Social content manager, Fantasy & Betting)

  • Winner: Will Zalatoris (+4000) – Beware the hungry dog runs faster. It’s comeback time for the previous major runner-up. He’s come back to good form from his back surgery with a three-game stretch of T13, T2 and T4 earlier in the year. He played with Tiger on Monday and saw how great he looked recovering from his own surgery. Will even talked about the influence Tiger's comeback has had on his own journey. People are sleeping on Zalatoris' comeback because of his MC at THE PLAYERS and T74 in Houston. Augusta will bring something out of him. Zalatoris is ready to be among the top players in the world and will show it this week.
  • Top 10: Bryson DeChambeau (+300) – It’s been four years since he called Augusta National a par 67. He is older and wiser now to say such a thing. DeChambeau's game fits Augusta well and I see him taking a big charge at this championship in a quest to become a two-time major champion.
  • Longshot: Sam Burns (+5500) – The only reason I’m taking him here is that I’ve liked him to win for the past couple of months now and he hasn’t. A wise man once said, “if you like a player to win soon, more likely than not they will”.
  • H2H: Lowry (-110) over Morikawa – Collin’s game is a mystery this year. Most alarming has been his iron play which in past years has been seen as unstoppable. Combo that with the fact that Lowry does like Augusta and is in relatively good form as of late. I’ll take the current form over past success.

Great Looks, Decent Comfort

Clipper40 - Apr 11, 2024

Slight upgrade over last years model. I like the improved lacing system which seems to hug my foot better. I do think last year's Tour 2 had better cushion or "bounce" to the insole. This year's model feels much firmer to me which is disappointing. I was hoping they would soften up after a few rounds but that doesn't seem to be the case so far. Probably wouldn't have bought 3 colors knowing what I know now. ...

Incredible upgrade from the version 2

Ernestos321527017 - Mar 24, 2024

I have three pairs of these, having replaced my two previous Victory Tour 2's that I had for two years. These have much better support and hug my feet better giving me more confidence taking big swings with the driver. Excellent traction and I do not get sore feet at all after a long round of 18 holes. Nike made some great improvements in the looks of this shoe as well. Much better contours and the finish of the leather is a lot more appealing with the pebble finish and perforated venting. A great shoe, my favorites to wear and that is with a collection of 12 golf shoes to choose from. ...

Golf Shoe review

KenR802697836 - Mar 18, 2024

By far the best golf shoe I’ve ever worn. I’m a Walker and highly recommend these. I bought another pair in black . They run true to size . I love them

Feel the Grip

The all-new Tour Flex Pro from Softspikes® in the key 3 forefoot spike locations and Silver Tornado spikes in the lateral and heel offer exceptional traction in all conditions and give your feet great grip on the ground when you’re going all out for the pin.

All-Round Response

We stitched a Zoom Air unit directly to the upper instead of being set into foam, so it responds to every step. A full-length plate beneath the Air unit helps increase energy return. Cushiony foam under the heel delivers an extremely smooth ride.

Old-School Look

Full-grain leather has a supple feel and sophisticated look, nodding to golf shoes from past generations.

Locked-In Feel

An internal strap stretches over then secures your foot, conforming to its shape.

More Benefits

  • Molded 3-D collar helps you stay stabilized.
  • Internal foam pods cushion your heel.

Masters 2024 props, golf odds: Expert reveals top PGA Tour prop bets, parlay picks for Augusta National

Mike mcclure locked in his expert pga golf prop picks and parlay for the masters 2024 at augusta national.

freiburg free tour

The first 2024 Masters tee times will begin at 10:30 a.m. ET on Thursday after weather delayed the start of the opening round. At 100-1 to win outright in the 2024 Masters odds, it's unlikely that Tiger Woods will pick up his sixth career green jacket this week at the Masters 2024. However, there are still plenty of intriguing Masters Tiger props on the board for golf bettors to consider before he tees off. The latest 2024 Masters prop bets list Woods' Round 1 score over/under at 73.5, with the Over favored at -165 (risk $165 to win $100).

Other Tiger prop picks include a top-10 overall finish paying +900 and a top-20 performance returning +350. Which 2024 Masters props should you target involving Woods and every other golfer in the 2024 Masters field? Before locking in your 2024 Masters prop picks or entering Masters pool picks, you need to see what SportsLine DFS pro and PGA expert Mike McClure has to say .

McClure is a DFS legend with over $2 million in career winnings, and he's been red-hot on his PGA picks dating back to the PGA Tour restart in June of 2020. McClure uses his proprietary simulation model to analyze the field and crush his  golf picks . He is up almost $9,500 on his best bets since the restart.

McClure's model predicted Jon Rahm would finish on top of the leaderboard at the 2023 Sentry Tournament of Champions and The American Express. At the 2023 Masters, the model was all over Rahm's second career major victory heading into the weekend. It was the second straight Masters win for the model, which also nailed Scheffler winning in 2022.

This same model has also nailed a whopping 10 majors entering the weekend. Anyone who has followed McClure's picks has seen massive returns.

Now, McClure has dialed in on the Masters golf tournament and just locked in his top prop picks and PGA predictions. You can only see McClure's Masters 2024 prop picks at SportsLine .

Top 2024 Masters prop picks

We can tell you that one of McClure's favorite Masters prop picks is Ludvig Aberg to be the top debutant at +275. Despite turning pro less than a year ago, Aberg comes to Augusta in strong form. He's already picked up wins on both the PGA Tour and European Tour in the past seven months.

He's also made every cut during his 2024 PGA Tour schedule and hasn't finished worse than 25th in his past six events. His average finish position during that span is 12.8 and he's posted four rounds of 66 or lower this year, including an astonishing 63 in Round 4 of the Sentry. Wyndham Clark is the only other first-time Masters player who can claim a comparable recent run to Aberg, so McClure loves the value of betting on Aberg at a return that approaches 3-1.  You can see who else to back at SportsLine .

How to make Masters 2024 prop picks

McClure has also locked in a slew of other prop bets for the 2024 Masters, including a prop that pays almost 20-1 and comes from an unlikely player. You can find out who it is, and check out all of McClure's Masters prop picks at SportsLine .

Who wins the Masters 2024, and which golfer should you target for almost a 20-1 payout? Visit SportsLine now to get Mike McClure's Masters 2024 prop picks, all from the golf expert who is up almost $9,500 on his best bets since 2020 , and find out.
