Kennedy Tour of Boston: From penniless emigrants in Boston to JFK in the White House

kennedy tour in boston

The Kennedy family’s journey from penniless Irish emigrants in Boston to JFK becoming  the leader of the Free World is the definitive story of the American Dream.

The Kennedy Tour of Boston is a historical journey of one of America’s most intriguing families.

As with last week’s Boston Irish Heritage Tour, the tour leaves from the Boston Common. The tour’s first stop is a short walk to the Statehouse where the tour guide begins with a little history on John F. Kennedy. This history is designed to remind the audience of the political prowess eventually gained by the Kennedy’s before getting deeper into the history of the Kennedy and on John’s mother’s side, the Fitzgerald families.

Throughout the tour, the group is able to really see the transformation of the Kennedy’s from a second-class Irish-Catholic family to the family we know of today. Pat Kennedy, a first-generation Irish emigrant from Duganstown, Co Wexford, worked on the docks where the work was tough and diseases were prevalent.

Pat fathered five children with his wife Bridget Murphy, the last of which was born just months before he died. Pat Kennedy died of cholera on November 22, 1858, exactly 105 years to the day before his great-grandson, President John F. Kennedy, was assassinated. Pat’s youngest son P.J. became the first Kennedy elected to public office.

The tour passes the Kennedy’s residence at Bellevue Hotel and then the Old Statehouse, where participants learn about JFK’s maternal grandfather, John “Honey Fitz” Fitzgerald, a second generation Irish emigrant. Fitzgerald was a successful politician in Boston and Washington D.C. where he was the only Catholic member of Congress.

Fitzgerald was well known throughout the Irish community and even served as president of the Irish social club the Neptune Association. Although Fitzgerald was known for being corrupt, he was also known for getting things done. Honey Fitz is responsible for the Red Line to Harvard and the Franklin Park Zoo.

The tour group learns that although it only took one generation for both the Fitzgerald’s and the Kennedy’s to achieve nominal success in the public sector, JFK’s father was not enamored with Irish’s treatment in Boston.

Joe moved the Kennedy’s to New York City for a time because he believed Boston limited what Irish-Catholics could achieve. The tour does an excellent job of illustrating the divide between the new generation of Irish emigrant families in Boston and the Boston Brahmins or Yankees who wanted to maintain the status quo. At the time, an Irish-Catholic could serve the Massachusetts senate or maybe even be mayor, but there was almost no chance one could win a state-wide election.

At Faneuil Hall, John F. Kennedy gave the last speech of his 1960 presidential campaign, where he eventually proved his father wrong by winning not only the state, but national election on his way to the presidency.

The tour also stops by the Omni Parker House Hotel, the oldest hotel in America, where JFK proposed to Jackie Bouvier and even had his bachelor party. For more fascinating anecdotes, you will have to take the tour yourself!

With nine stops in total, the Kennedy Tour of Boston gives great insight into the evolution of the most revered Irish-American family in Boston. This tour not only serves as a great history lesson on the Kennedy’s, but expounds on much of the Irish-American history in Boston itself. Overall, this tour is extremely informative and entertaining; great for locals and tourists alike.

The Kennedy Tour of Boston costs $12 for adults, $10 for seniors/students, and $6 for military personnel (children 12 and under are free). The tour leaves from the Boston Common every Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 11:30 AM. Participants also get $2 off admission to the JFK library with a Kennedy Tour of Boston ticket stub. John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum

A must for any history buffs or fans of our nation's 35th president, this excellent library and museum details the life of President John F. Kennedy. Exhibits include his presidential papers; masses of Kennedy memorabilia, including re-creations of his desk in the Oval Office and of the television studio in which he debated Richard M. Nixon in the 1960 election; and artifacts from the U.S. space program. There's permanent display on the late Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis plus plenty of other artifacts and information about Kennedy's life and presidency. The building itself is quite striking and was designed by architect I. M. Pei.

Museumgoers say that while the museum is off the beaten path (it sits about 5 miles south of downtown on Columbia Point), it is well worth the trek thanks to the exhibits and staff. However, some wish the exhibits had a more detailed explanation of Kennedy and events during his life. The views from the museum are amazing, add some visitors.

The library is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission costs $18 for adults and $10 for children ages 13 to 17; entry is free for kids 12 and younger. The closest "T" stop is JFK/UMass on the Red Line. From the station, you can take the Paul Revere Route 1 free shuttle bus from the bus shelter on the ground level. For more information, visit the museum's website .

A tour of the city that JFK called home

John and Jackie Kennedy with their children John and Caroline at their family home in Hyannis Port in 1962

J ohn F Kennedy always thought of Boston as his hometown. When the Secret Service recovered the monogrammed wallet from his bloodstained jacket on November 22 1963, the address on the driver’s licence spoke volumes: 122 Bowdoin Street, Boston.

Kennedy planned to move his family back to Boston, the city which first propelled him to greatness, once his four or eight years in the White House were over. Sadly, fate – and an assassin on the sixth floor of a Texas book depository – had other ideas.

Monday marks the centenary of the birth of one of the most popular presidents in US history, and his hometown (JFK was born in Boston’s Brookline district at 3pm on May 29 1917) is celebrating with a flurry of special events and new exhibitions.

The John F. Kennedy Statue by Isabel McIlvain, Massachusetts State House, Boston

The outstanding Kennedy Walking Tour weaves together nine key sites from the president’s life in the course of 90 minutes. It’s an excellent way to familiarise yourself with downtown “Beantown”, as Boston is known, so I sign up and meet my guide – local historian David – in front of the JFK statue on the State House lawn.

“They called Kennedy the first Irish Brahmin, because he was the first guy from a Catholic, immigrant background who really succeeded in challenging the political elites here,” says David. “He was an exceptional individual who just kept proving himself time and time again; repeatedly overturning odds.”

From the State House we stroll in bright New England sunshine on to nearby Bowdoin Street, where JFK maintained his Boston apartment, even after marrying Jacqueline Bouvier in 1953, and moving to the White House in 1961. Next door, the “gentlemen’s hotel bar” he frequented as a bachelor has evolved into an appealing gastro-pub – The 21st Amendment. “JFK wasn’t a particularly big drinker, but he would come here regularly – usually to one of the window booths, with family, friends and advisers to dream about and plan his political rise,” says David.

The Omni Parker House in Boston

Central Boston is peppered with JFK hotspots like this, from Old City Hall – where his idolised grandfather John “Honey Fitz” Fitzgerald worked as city mayor – to the campaign headquarters for his own successful applecart-turning Senate run in 1952.

A few minutes’ saunter later, we find ourselves entering another building steeped in Kennedy lore: the Omni Parker House Hotel at the foot of Beacon Hill. It was here that a six-year-old JFK made his first public speech while standing on a table at his grandfather’s birthday party, then – 23 years later – announced his own 1946 run for Congress. It was also here, at table 40 in the hotel’s restaurant, that he proposed to Jackie in June 1953, then held his infamous stag party.

Our walking tour finishes at JFK’s favourite restaurant: Union Oyster House, where the up-and-coming orator could be found most Sunday afternoons, sitting in the same booth, dissecting piles of newspapers over steaming bowls of lobster stew.

A post shared by Union Oyster House (@unionoysterhouse) on Mar 19, 2014 at 7:06pm PDT

The Oyster House is putting some of Kennedy’s favourites back on the menu to celebrate his centenary and you can enjoy them in the Kennedy Booth (no 18) if you book in advance. Here, at the oldest continuously operated restaurant in the US, you can gorge on some of the finest seafood in New England, pondering not what Americans could do for their country but what another plate of delicious Bluepoint oysters could do for you.

Boston’s two flagship Kennedy museums are celebrating the president’s 100th birthday with new exhibitions – and both are a short subway ride from the city’s walkable core. The John Fitzgerald Kennedy National Historic Site is the official title of the painstakingly restored Kennedy family home at 83 Beals Street in leafy Brookline, now run by the National Parks Service. JFK was born in the master bedroom on the first floor, and the house is full of original touches, from the children’s personalised breakfast bowls to Jack’s favourite storybook sitting on a wooden chair next to his bed: King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table. (Proof, if any was needed, that the Camelot myth followed him throughout life).

For the centennial celebrations, the museum has produced a special video exhibit: “John Fitzgerald Kennedy The First 100 Years”, including rare family footage, which opened last week and will run until the autumn.

The Old City Hall in Boston

At the other end of town, the grand John F Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum at Columbia Point overlooks Boston Harbour, into which all eight of Jack’s great-grandparents sailed in the 1840s, escaping Ireland’s potato famine. The starkly geometrical repository was designed by IM Pei, the brains behind the Louvre. Next week it opens its own exhibition – JFK at 100: Milestones and Mementoes.

The collection includes 100 personal artefacts from the president’s life, many of which have never been displayed before. Numbered 1-100, they include JFK’s handwritten notes for his landmark civil rights address, his iconic sunglasses, and pictures drawn for him by his children.

“JFK is such a looming historical figure that it’s often difficult for people to get an impression of him as a normal person,” says Stacey Bredhoff, the museum’s curator. “That’s what we’re trying to do here: present a portrait of the man as well as the President.”

Boston harbour

For a man who was president for a little over 1,000 days, JFK’s farseeing, compassionate leadership – personified by his sweeping Civil Rights Bill and championing of the arts – left an enduring legacy, which Boston intends to celebrate in style.

The words from Kennedy’s own inauguration speech, chiselled into the marble walls of the JFK Library, sum it up best: “All this will not be finished in the first one hundred days,” the young president told his nation. “Nor will it be finished in the first one thousand days, nor in the life of this administration, nor even perhaps in our lifetime on this planet. But let us begin.”

America As You Like It (020 8742 8299; americaasyoulikeit.com) offers a four-night holiday to Boston from £799 per person, including return flights with Norwegian from London Gatwick to Boston and four nights room only at the Omni Parker House Hotel.

I was pleasantly surprised about this tour. Walking from the Visitor Center on Boston Common, our guides, Jeremy and Cara, brought our group to a number of sites between the Common and Union Oyster House. Our guides were knowledgeable, good humored, had answers to all of our questions, and were generally very personable. The tour did not consist of Kennedy worship as I worried, so much as it gave an excellent narrative of Boston's political sea change in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The guides were fair, sometimes praising and sometimes critical, but at all times well informed of their subject matter. If you've got an extra two hours at 11:30 on a Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday, I would definitely recommend this tour.

We went on this tour in November 2011 after purchasing a discounted LivingSocial voucher for two. We even brought a baby in the stroller and it was doable. The tour started at the visitor center at Boston Common. I enjoyed visiting the different sites, including the State House and especially hearing the stories behind JFK and his family. The highlight of the tour was seeing the exact spot where JFK proposed to Jackie! Our guide was great with a nice sense of humor; it felt were comfortable and natural to be part of the tour. It was a no-nonsense tour. It ended near the Rose Kennedy Highway and we got to see a large Italian market with fruits and veggies right there which was a suprise bonus ;-)

Photo of Danielle L.

I'm going to rate the overall experience vs. the historic part of the tour because I was NEVER a history person and I just don't absorb that kind of information which kind of sucks. So I found this tour on Living Social..or Groupon...idk, and since we frequent Boston a lot to visit my brother (on Beacon Hill) I figured it would be something new to do for a change. We met our guide at the Boston Common and began the tour up hill toward Beacon Hill. We were a decent size group on a tiny sidewalk with traffic all around and back tracked a few times due to the timeline of history (not that I really minded). The tour went up and down streets I'd never been to before cruising through Quincy Market and ending right at the edge of the North End, about a 90 minute tour that certainly was educational...if I could remember any of it. It was something new, and nice for an October afternoon especially for the price....my voucher was about $20 for 5 of us.

(J) Across the street from 122 Bowdoin St. sits the Massachusetts State House (1798) (included on our Freedom Trail Tour ) and it is here where on Jan. 9, 1961, eleven days before presidential inauguration, JFK gave another speech, in which he quotes one of the founders of Boston and the first Massachusetts Governor, John Winthrop's "city upon a hill" sermon and highlights four qualities that he wanted to associate with his presidency: courage, judgment, integrity and dedication.   On the Beacon Street, or west side of the State House, is a statue of JFK in mid-stride exiting the building.

(K) Continue down Beacon St. and at 21 Beacon St. you will see the former Bellevue (now a private residence) where JFK lived in 1946 when he ran for the US Congress.

Aerosmith announces farewell tour return, new date for Boston concert

Aerosmith announced this week that its “Peace Out” farewell tour is set to resume in September.

The tour went on hiatus last fall and was indefinitely postponed while lead singer Steven Tyler recovered from damaged vocal cords and a fractured larynx.

“Unfortunately, Steven’s vocal injury is more serious than initially thought,” the band wrote in a social media post announcing the postponement. “As a result, all the currently scheduled PEACE OUT shows must be postponed to sometime in 2024, with new dates to be announced as soon as we know more.”

The band will kick off its return to the road with two newly added shows in Pennsylvania, first at the PPG Paints Arena in Pittsburgh on Sept. 20, followed by a show at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia on Sept. 23. Rockers The Black Crowes are also joining Aerosmith on tour as special guests.

After last year’s New Year’s Eve performance was postponed, Aerosmith’s holiday homecoming stop in Boston will now take place on Dec. 31 at TD Garden, with what is billed as “an electrifying show of Aerosmith’s groundbreaking hits performed in an immersive 360° production as they celebrate 50 years as America’s greatest rock band,” according to a press release.

Guitarist Joe Perry previously promised a return to the road in an interview with the Globe last winter.

“But with any luck we will be back out late summer and fall of 24,” Perry said. “And there’s always next New Year’s Eve! Stay tuned for that.”

Alongside the previously announced tour schedule, Aerosmith plans to make an extra stop in Florida at the Kia Center in Orlando on Feb. 11. The tour wraps with a final set in Buffalo, N.Y. at the KeyBank Center on Feb. 25.

All previously purchased tickets will be honored for the rescheduled shows, and tickets for the rescheduled dates and newly added shows go on sale on Friday at 10 a.m. on ticketmaster.com .

News | Red Sox president focused on Fenway Park experience; on-field performance out of control

If health is on their side, Red Sox President Sam Kennedy says he believes this year’s team is more than capable of competing through September and playing “October baseball” at Fenway Park.

No matter how the season turns out, and acknowledging critical feedback from fans on the offseason, Kennedy says he remains focused on improving the experience at the ballpark.

When the Fenway Faithful turns out for the home opener Tuesday they can expect larger beers, one-pound cookies, a revamped pavilion level and the return of Heinz tomato ketchup — all new amenities fans can take in this spring and summer.

“I take an approach that the angrier, the more upset, the more passionate our fans are, it’s just a reflection on the overwhelming responsibility we have to put a great product on the field and to give the fans a great experience,” Kennedy told the Herald on Saturday.

“The one thing we can really control is not always team performance because you have human beings trying to perform at their highest level, but what we can perform is the customer experience,” he added. “We want everybody walking out of those gates feeling like they belong to Fenway, like they were treated well.”

Fans of all ages trickled out into the cold, misty weather Saturday to take in the sights of Fenway, strolling around the field, dugouts and concession stands, and finding warmth in the fourth and fifth levels of the ballpark, now called the Aura Pavilion.

Aura, a Boston-based software company focused on online safety, secured naming rights to the pavilion after State Street held the sponsorship since 2006. The luxurious space features 1,500 seats and a warm, vibrant indoor area where fans can scarf down Irish nachos, Togarashi fried clam rolls, an Aura burger and other concessions.

Two full-service bars and dozens of televisions are also inside the pavilion. On non-game days, the Aura Club will be available for events and receptions, accommodating 450 guests.

“We are looking at this at the long-term so it’s very important to make sure that fans when they come back in have a lot of positive energy because there’s been a lot of critical feedback the last few years,” Aura CEO Hari Ravichandran told the Herald.

Whether the Red Sox are winning or losing, fans will will have the option to sip on a cold one in a 25-ounce can or cup, an increase from the 16-ounce maximums in past seasons.

The Boston Licensing Board approved the increase in March , with attorney Dennis Quilty saying the larger alcoholic option is the “standard in the industry these days.” The board also signed off on adding more stations that serve strictly beer and other beverages, from 14 to 18.

Kennedy said he doesn’t anticipate much change in alcohol consumption at the ballpark due the increases and noted how the state Alcoholic Beverages Control Commission, security and fan service representatives monitor the output every game

“The consumer sets the policy. If our consumers are asking for different products, whether it’s bigger beers, bigger hot dogs, bigger cookies, that’s something we focus on,” Kennedy said, adding concession prices will be “pretty stable” from last year. “But we’re obviously focused on fan safety and responsible drinking — it’s a balance.”

Landon Shubert, 18, of Middlebury, Vt., took in Saturday’s festivities with his friend Jonathan Duffy, of Reading. The two Salem State University students have been lifelong Red Sox fans and are hoping for the best this season.

“When you think about it, Fenway Park is a historic ballpark,” Shubert said. “Even if you’re just a fan of the game of baseball, this is the place to come and hang out. Even if they’re not winning, it’s still a great time to come here.”

“Sign some more talent,” Shubert added.

AI model has potential to detect risk of childbirth-related post-traumatic stress disorder

NIH-funded study suggests model could identify large percentage of those at risk.

Researchers have adapted an artificial intelligence (AI) program to identify signs of childbirth-related post-traumatic stress disorder (CB-PTSD) by evaluating short narrative statements of patients who have given birth. The program successfully identified a large proportion of participants likely to have the disorder, and with further refinements—such as details from medical records and birth experience data from diverse populations—the model could potentially identify a large percentage of those at risk. The study, which was funded by the National Institutes of Health, appears in Scientific Reports .

Worldwide, CB-PTSD affects about 8 million people who give birth each year, and current practice for diagnosing CB-PTSD requires a physician evaluation, which is time-consuming and costly. An effective screening method has the potential to rapidly and inexpensively identify large numbers of postpartum patients who could benefit from diagnosis and treatment. Untreated CB-PTSD may interfere with breastfeeding, bonding with the infant and the desire for a future pregnancy. It also may worsen maternal depression, which can lead to suicidal thoughts and behaviors.

Investigators administered the CB-PTSD Checklist , which is a questionnaire designed to screen for the disorder, to 1,295 postpartum people. Participants also provided short narratives of approximately 30 words about their childbirth experience. Researchers then trained an AI model to analyze a subset of narratives from patients who also tested high for CB-PTSD symptoms on the questionnaire. Next, the model was used to analyze a different subset of narratives for evidence of CB-PTSD. Overall, the model correctly identified the narratives of participants who were likely to have CB-PTSD because they scored high on the questionnaire.

The authors believe their work could eventually make the diagnosis of childbirth post-traumatic stress disorder more accessible, providing a means to compensate for past socioeconomic, racial, and ethnic disparities.

The study was conducted by Alon Bartal, Ph.D., of Bar Ilan University in Israel, and led by senior author Sharon Dekel, Ph.D., of Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School, Boston. Funding was provided by NIH’s Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD).

Maurice Davis, D.H.A., M.P.A., M.H.S.A., of the NICHD Pregnancy and Perinatology Branch, is available for comment.
