Trip Fontaine Character Timeline in The Virgin Suicides

Character Analysis

All the Lisbon girls are the objects of the narrators' erotic fantasy lives, but fourteen-year-old Lux is the one who turns out to be the real deal. She's smart, beautiful, and more outgoing and independent than the rest of her sisters, but her sexuality is what distinguishes her the most. While Cecilia is like a disembodied spirit, Lux is lust personified.

Our first glimpse of Lux is sexually charged. When Peter Sissen was invited to dinner at the Lisbon house for helping Mr. Lisbon at school, he asked to use the bathroom and was directed to the girls' upstairs bathroom. He makes the most of the opportunity, snooping around in all the girly stuff you'd expect to find there. The jackpot? A (gasp!) used tampon in the trash. Suddenly Lux knocks on the bathroom door and told him she needs to get something "private." Peter rushes out the door to tell the other guys that Lux is "bleeding between the legs that very instant" (1.12).

Lux Unleashed

Lux is sexy. She likes to tan herself in the sun wearing "the swimsuit that caused the knife sharpener to give her a fifteen-minute demonstration for nothing" (1.36). On the night of Cecilia's party and suicide, Lux doesn't disappoint:

She was the only one who accorded with our image of the Lisbon girls. She radiated health and mischief. Her dress fit tightly, and when she came forward to shake out hands, she secretly moved one finger to tickle our palms, giving off at the same time a strange, gruff laugh. (1.42)

Like all the girls, Lux bonded even more closely with her sisters after Cecilia's death, but even then Lux is bolder. She sneaks a ride on a motorcycle, and wears her skirts really short once she returns to school. She tries wearing makeup to church (mom makes her wash it off). She flirts with Chip Willard at school and has a stream of boyfriends despite her mother's prohibition on dating. She's good at finding ways to sneak off:

Lux's brief unions were clandestine […] and were consummated in the hot box above the auditorium, amid uncomfortable theatrical lights and cables […] and in the most daring rendezvous, in the station wagon itself, for the fifteen minutes Mrs. Lisbon stood in line at the bank. (3.31)

But all isn't well with Lux. Her dangerous liaisons are kind of, well, indiscriminate.

But the boys who snuck off with Lux were always the stupidest boys, the most selfish and abused at home […]. That Lux consented to meet them in the dells and thickets of our school grounds only showed too well her disequilibrium. (3.31)

What's happening to Lux? Sounds like equal parts sexual awakening and self-destruction. She finally attracts the attention of the school heartthrob, Trip Fontaine. Although he can have any girl he wants, he gets struck by lightning when he meets her. Trip says that she's:

[…] the most naked person with clothes on he had ever seen. (3.47)

Lux has no idea of her effect on him, but he's obsessed. He finally makes his move and she kind of responds. After a chaste visit at her house under the watchful eye of Mr. and Mrs. Lisbon, he's getting into his car, when:

Suddenly the air inside the car churned. He felt himself grasped by his long lapels, pulled forward and pushed back, as a creature with a hundred mouths started sucking the marrow from his bones. She said nothing as she came on like a starved animal. (3.57)

Once Lux's sexuality is unleashed, she's insatiable. Trip, talking to the narrators later in his drug-addled life, says he's never gotten over her even though he's had scores of women.

Years later, he was still amazed by Lux's singleness of purpose, her total lack of inhibitions. (4.58)

Her parents probably caught her, because Lux was grounded and Trip banned from the house. Lux tried to rebel in other ways. She forges excuses to get out of gym class, and climbs up on top of the lockers to smoke. Her smoking buddy Julie has a theory:

She did say that Lux had an affected hardness that might have been a reaction to pain. "She was always saying, 'Fuck this school,' or 'I can't wait until I get out of here.' But so did lots of kids." (3.76)

Julie would sometime find Lux lying on top of the lockers, hugging herself and shaking. Eventually, she seems to feel better and be more involved at school, singing and dancing in the school musical. Trip decides it's time to make a move, but Mr. Lisbon says no way can he take Lux out in a car. He convinces the Lisbons to allow all the girls to go to Homecoming as a group. It's the only way he could see Lux.

Lux is ecstatic. She hugs and kisses her dad like a little girl. Her sisters go along with the plan just to please her. And she has a great time, sneaking smokes, hanging out with her sisters, finally slipping away to make out and drink with Trip under the bleachers. She tried to make the most of the night:

Lux found a way of arching her back that made her [baggy, homemade] dress tight in front. (3.177)

And guess what—she and Trip are crowned Queen and King of the prom. So things are going great for Lux, right? Wrong. Lux disappears with Trip, and the girls go home without her. Two hours later, and way past curfew, Lux arrives home in a taxi and her dad starts to drag her into the house; her mom almost slaps her.

Later the boys learn that she and Trip had sex on the football field, and Lux started to cry, saying she always screwed things up. Trip abandons her, which is why she has to take a cab home. It's the beginning of the end for Lux.

Lux Leashed

The prom night disaster results in a total lockdown in the Lisbon house. The girls are pulled out of school and not allowed to leave the house. Mrs. Lisbon makes Lux throw all her rock records into the fire. Not long after, Lux begins having sex with random men on the roof of her house. No one knows how she meets them, since she never leaves the house, but her nighttime activities serve as the narrators' sex education, watching Lux through binoculars.

Some of the boys who claimed to be her lovers said that Lux looked really skinny; she had cold sores and was missing patches of hair. Despite that, she was sexually ravenous:

We got an idea of her state of mind from the little that got back to us of the little she said. She told Bob McBrearly that she couldn't live without "getting it regular," though she delivered the phrase with a Brooklyn accent, as though imitating a movie. A sense of playacting permeated much of her behavior. Willie Tate admitted that, despite her eagerness, "she didn't seem to like it much," and many boys described similar inattention. (4.14)

Lux is clearly getting desperate. There's an empty, sad quality to all this sex. She meets her lovers in the dead of winter; the boys think she's deranged. She has some bizarre birth control measures that involve a bottle of Coke or vinegar when she can't get real contraceptives. At one point, she has to fake a burst appendix to get the ER so she can have a pregnancy test. She's not pregnant, but she's gotten HPV.

Dr. Hornicker, the psychiatrist talked with her and though Lux denied it, he saw how depressed she was, and decided that all the surviving Lisbon girls were suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (4.60). Years later, Dr. Hornicker said that Lux's "promiscuity was a commonplace reaction to emotional need" because of the lack of love in her household (3.60). That sounds a little too simple for us.

The boys don't see any of the sisters until they start sending secret messages to them. Lux put a letter into Chase's mailbox saying she was so over Trip; other letters arrived, hinting that the girls wanted to escape. Lux meets the boys on the night they set to make their getaway, telling them to wait while her sisters "pack."

While the rest of the girls are in various parts of the house killing themselves, Lux distracts the boys who think they're coming to rescue them from their prison. She uses her sex appeal that keeps the boys from noticing that anything is off: she undoes Chase Buell's pants:

Even though she was doing it to Chase Buell, we could all feel Lux undoing us, reaching out for us and taking us as she knew we could be taken. (4.195)

She goes into the garage, saying she'll wait for them in the car. The police find her dead from carbon monoxide poisoning. Lux, as she often was, was a master manipulator that night:

She had escaped in the car just as we expected. But she had unbuckled us, it turned out, only to stall us, so that she and her sisters could die in peace. (4)

What year is this film set in? I read a review that says it's 1975. "Alone Again (Naturally)" by Gilbert O'Sullivan came out in 1971. "Hello, It's Me" by Todd Rundgren and "How Can You Mend a Broken Heart" by Al Green, both 1972. "A Dream Goes on Forever" by Todd Rundgren and "The Air That I Breathe" by The Hollies, 1974. "I'm Not in Love" by 10cc, "Magic Man" by Heart, "Strange Magic" by ELO, 1975. "Crazy On You" by Heart, 1976. "Come Sail Away" by Styx wasn't even recorded until 1977. What gives?

The ambiance was good. The staff friendly and helpful. The seating was comfortable. Most of the food was good but we all preferred the offerings of Flame as it was. The only thing we all agreed we did not like was the burger ( we... passed it around to see what we all thought). Too much cheese, too strong and the beef was lost. The Lamb chops were good and cooked to perfection but would have been easier to eat as 4 small ones rather than 2 doubles. The 36 oz Ribeye, shared by 2, was also cooked to perfection. A side salad and simple potato would have been a good offering. Good meat does not need fussy sides and sometimes it is all too rich so for us older folks, or those have have eaten out too much in the week already, please think about some simple additions. I also find it frustrating to read a menu with no GF or DF offerings but merely an offer to adapt as needed. I find, when my dish arrives, I still need to check changes are made, on this occasion having my main whisked back to the kitchen to double check! More

We have eaten at Flame at the Four Seasons every visit and never been disappointed. Chef Tyler Florence has temporarily taken it over this season as Miller & Lux. The dining room is exactly the same, just a new menu. It's all about the steak... and the $200 40 oz tomahawk is enough for 2 hungry or 3 normal people which actually is a solid value. It was cooked perfectly and the peppercorn sauce was a great accompaniment. When I have steak I want a loaded baked potato which is not available. Also some kind of fatty salad like a wedge or waldorf. They have a tableside Caesar which was presented nicely but just wasn't anything special for $23/pp. The wine list is $100 and up with cheapest bottles marked up 4-5x. Pretty normal for a steakhouse. All and all the service was excellent which is why I gave it 5 stars. Great ambiance, pace and attention to detail by everyone we encountered. More

Amazing! I had high expectations for this restaurant as it is operated by an internationally rebound chef. To say that I was impressed is an understatement. From the perfectly crafted cocktails to the impeccably prepared filet mignon ($95) this place did not disappoint . Prepare... to spend $300+ for two people. More

Service was impeccable but food quality was very disappointing. No way Tyler Florence would put his name on the elk short rib dish. Very very dry. Nice sauce but dry meat. No way the chef or wait staff tried this dish. I was not going... to make a scene because we cook a lot for ourselves and others. However the manager asked about my meal and his solution was to bring more sauce. I refused but explained the chef could not be happy with this production. Very shortly he reappeared to state the chef planned on using sous vide prep from now on. That doesn’t help my $80 meal and also means he agrees. Minor bill adjustment of 2 glasses of wine which also felt lame. My wife’s meal of lamb chops was just average. Major disappointment because we were looking forward to the evening. With La Tour, Sweet Basil, etc in Vail Max and Lux needs to step its game up. Tyler needs to check his restaurant out because his name is on the line. More

'Just be prepared': Travel expert shares last-minute eclipse trip planning tips

YUKON, Okla. (KOKH) — The southeastern corner of Oklahoma will find itself in the path of totality of Monday's solar eclipse.

According to Jennifer Morris, owner and CEO of Let's Go Lux Travel, bookings for lodging are going fast.

She urged last-minute travelers to the area to act quickly to find a spot while some remain available.

Any given area getting a total eclipse is extremely rare, according to Texas A&M researchers , so it could be a once-in-a-lifetime chance to see one.

According to Morris, "It is a very small town. It's not liking coming into Oklahoma City... just be prepared."

As of Friday evening, Choctaw Landing in Hochatown had some availability. Raymond Gary State Park in nearby Fort Towson also had an RV spot and a cabin the website describes as "primitive."

On the other hand, the HiWay Inn in Broken Bow and the Comfort Suites in Idabel were already fully booked.

"I've been telling everybody: go early, stay put, and leave late," added Morris.

Heavy traffic congestion is expected, so Morris urged visitors to bring all their needed supplies with them—and to be ready to hang around for a bit even after the eclipse ends.

Morris thinks the Apr. 8 eclipse could be the biggest travel event ever for the area with around 60,000 visitors expected to descend upon southeastern Oklahoma.

Morris shared, "Everybody I've talked to is extremely excited. They said that they're just kind of flying by the seat of their pants and they're, they're super excited but they're also a little nervous as to what the outcome is going to bring."

Morris urged travelers to be respectful of the area's locals as they deal with the influx of visitors.

Before I became a travel journalist, I was a buyer in the fashion industry for over 15 years, working with brands such as Brooks Brothers, Michael Kors, and the former Liz Claiborne, so you can say that I have a keen eye for style, quality fabrics, and a good fit. These days, I put my former skills to work in a different way. On average, I travel twice a month and it’s not unusual for me to be zipping through the airport on any given day, so I pack light and maximize the outfits that I’m taking with me. 

At first, it wasn’t easy to streamline my packing lists for each destination; I was always stressed that I had left an essential top, pair of bottoms, jacket — you name it — at home. But, with the help of my former fashion buyer brain, I developed the ultimate travel capsule wardrobe , complete with three foolproof outfits that help me create dozens of looks (without needing to check a bag , I might add). Here are my favorite mix-and-match separates that suit any type of trip itinerary — both work and play — along with some must-have accessories that'll widen your wardrobe horizons. 

Duer LuxTwill Trucker Jacket

I’ve been a huge fan of the Canadian clothing company Duer for several years now, and its LuxTwill Trucker Jacket and matching High-Rise Trousers are one of my favorite outfits to bring on work trips. Both the jacket and pants are made of 98 percent cotton and 2 percent elastane, so the pieces have a structured look while allowing for some stretch for comfort.

While it’s a great set, I also love to wear the jacket as a separate, over dresses, leggings, or jeans. And, to save suitcase space, I'll sport it on the plane. I've found that it's a versatile essential that’s great for work and play destinations. The trousers pair well with knits as well as button-front tops. I especially love pairing it with a slouchy novelty sweater like my favorite one from Minnow ; it's an excellent transition piece for spring that works with denim, pants, skirts and shorts and is constructed of a dreamy cotton-cashmere blend, making it super soft and comfortable. 

The timeless nautical pullover is also cozy, but not bulky and the dolman sleeves are fashionable and functional, allowing you to move freely when traveling. I own two of these sweaters and find myself bringing them on work trips and vacations because they match with nearly everything that I own.

PrettyGarden Two-Piece Sleeveless Vest and Wide-Leg Pants Set

I’m in love with Amazon's two-piece sets because not only are they available at amazing price points, but they're super sleek and can be styled in so many ways. Here, the vest is drapey and offers a sophisticated and elegant look, although it also works well with denim; when I'm home, I like pairing it with my Everlane Super-Soft Relaxed Jeans for a laidback SoCal vibe, but when I'm on the go, it goes perfectly with the Duer LuxTwill High-Rise Trousers featured above (and I can layer the brand's LuxTwill Trucker Jacket on top or pair the PrettyGarden trousers with my Minnow sweater ). 

The bottoms are like palazzo pants and flare slightly, with a loose fit throughout. I like that they aren’t too tight, making them perfect for work meetings, long travel days, and itinerary-heavy days. They also have functioning pockets that are great for holding your essentials while on the move. The set comes in eight colors and sizes range from S to 2XL. Both pieces are machine washable; I’ve put them to the test in the wash several times and they come out looking just as good as new. A word of advice: Make sure you hang them to dry or lay them flat so they retain good shape.

You can also wear it with a cropped jacket (like the Duer trucker jacket that I mentioned earlier) for a night out on the town. When the dress code calls for something cozier, I'll layer my Minnow sweater on top so it feels like I'm wearing a sweatshirt and sweatpants — even though the combo looks effortlessly chic.

Now, it's time to put the finishing touches on these travel outfits. Similarly, my go-to accessories can be mixed and matched to be styled with different looks, ensuring that everything in your suitcase is functional and will get plenty of use on your trip. Below, you'll find my favorite travel shoes and travel purses to tie your outfits together. 

Kizik Venice Slip-On Sneakers

A while back, I kept seeing these amazing hands-free slip-on shoes that you can put on and take off without having to bend down or fuss with laces. The Venice slip-ons are by far my favorites. They’re easy to slide right into, super lightweight, and hassle-free to pack. I love wearing them on long flights because they don’t feel constricting (plus, they make going through TSA security a breeze and I can easily slide out of them once I'm in my seat). And, when I'm at my destination, their cushy insoles and grippy rubber soles keep my feet comfy and supported when I'm on the move. 

They go with everything and really elevate any outfit. I'll pair them with my Duer set for more casual affairs and use them to make my PrettyGarden vest-trouser duo more playful after work meetings. And, of course, they're the long-lost soulmate for my Vuori jumpsuit , especially on travel days. 

Sapahn Jori Crossbody Bag

I used to be partial to labels and monogrammed bags, but I’m currently loving the Jori Crossbody for day-to-night use. During a recent trip to Santa Barbara, I found myself using it instead of my trusty Lululemon Everywhere Belt Bag — which says a lot . Although it looks small, it actually fits everything that I need for a busy day on the go; I can store a small notebook, wallet, makeup compact, and smartphone in there without effort. 

The best feature of this bag is that you can switch out the straps to give it an entirely different look, making it transitional from work to play. There are two pockets inside for organizing smaller items like lipsticks or receipts. It comes in four colors, although the khaki hue is my favorite because it’s great for spring and it goes with everything — whether I'm dressed up in my PrettyGarden vest and wide-leg trousers , dressed down in my Duer LuxTwill Trucker Jacket and matching High-Rise Trousers , or out grabbing coffee in my Vuori jumpsuit .

Milmo 1813 Tote Bag

Milmo's 1813 isn’t just another tote bag, it’s a lifesaver for travel. I often use it as a personal item (paired with my Vuori jumpsuit ) when flying because of its versatility and roominess. I also love that it has a removable and washable interior liner that easily comes out with snap buttons; I don’t have to over-worry about spills and messes (the company also offers a two-year warranty on any defects outside of normal wear and tear).

While I’m a huge fan of my Mansur Gavriel flats , I usually opt for Everlane's Day Gloves when I'm traveling because they’re just so comfortable and sleek. Praised for their buttery soft leather, the shoes mold to your feet for easy movement and endless support. I can take on a full day of walking wearing them. The rubber soles create a solid foundation and provide grippy traction on uneven and slick surfaces.

Made in an Italian factory, they come in 13 colors and sizes from 5 to 11, with the option for narrow or comfort width. I own several colors and rotate them when traveling.
