Kraftwerk Kick Off North American “3D Tour” with Mesmerizing Concert in St. Louis: Review

The German electronic music pioneers staged an audio-visual feast

Kraftwerk Kick Off North American “3D Tour” with Mesmerizing Concert in St. Louis: Review

The sheer diversity of the concertgoers who descended upon Kraftwerk ’s tour kickoff at The Pageant in St. Louis is a testament to the genre-spanning influence of the German electronic music pioneers. Punks, goths, metalheads, record nerds, businessmen, hipsters young and old: The near-capacity audience was a true smattering of personalities that transcended age and scene. More than a few attendees were even sporting the band’s iconic red-polo-black-tie Man-Machine -era look. And they were all there to witness Kraftwerk’s “3D Tour” — an illustrious audio-visual experience commemorating the group’s 50th anniversary (get tickets here ).

Upon entering the venue, everyone was handed a pair of white Kraftwerk-branded 3D glasses. On the stage stood the band’s four iconic keyboard pedestals, cutting a brutalist aesthetic that would carry over into the set. As the lights descended and an ambient prelude track played over the house system, the room full of people staring eagerly through their 3D glasses looked bizarre and ominous — very Kubrick.

The four members of Kraftwerk — founding member Ralf Hütter, Fritz Hilpert, Henning Schmitz, and Falk Grieffenhagen — finally took the stage after letting the ambient piece percolate through the venue for nearly 10 minutes. They donned what appeared to be the motion-capture onesies used for movie special effects and video game animations — an A+ fit all things considered. As the group launched into the opening medley of “Numbers/Computer World/Computer World 2,” everyone who was skeptical about having to wear 3D glasses had their jaws collectively drop. A green field of numerals shot out of the screen from behind the band, seemingly coming within arms length, as if you could reach out and touch them. It would be the first in a series of visual feasts that complimented each song. Sure, 3D can be a gimmick, but like the music of Kraftwerk, these graphics were worldclass. It’s also worth noting that you could take the glasses off and still comprehend the images, which were also effective in 2D, if less visceral.

The setlist itself was well-paced, creating a sonic push-pull effect that created a sense of forward motion, a quality uniquely inherent to Kraftwerk’s music. Rhythmic techno (ala The Mix remix album from 1991) was interspersed between the band’s more song-based classic material such as “The Man-Machine,” “Radioactivity,” and “The Model,” giving the audience a chance to break for some head-nodding dance beats between utterly captivating renditions of the group’s master cuts.

To the delight of dedicated fans, the setlist included the obligatory “hits,” either in full-song, medley, or techno-remix form. The short (but still long) version of “Autobahn” was a highlight, as the colorful album cover came to life on the screen and a Volkswagen Bug began a relaxing drive along the motorway. “Tour de France” also paired well with footage of the storied bike marathon — fulfilling the song’s concept through sight and sound — while the appearance of “The Robots” during the song of the same name was a more literal reflection of the lyrical content.

Kraftwerk 2022

Speaking of sound, the only real point of contention was the overall volume, which seemed dialed back to a comfortable listening volume (no earplugs required for this one). Occasionally the thump of the bass would punch through the mix — as it did on “Trans-Europe Express” during the encore — but there could have been more low end, especially on the more techno-based versions. Besides a stage malfunction that rendered Fritz Hilbert’s console lights non-functional, the concert was otherwise flawless.

If the St. Louis show is any indication, Kraftwerk’s “3D Tour” will be a remarkable tribute to their five-decade legacy. The sound design rendered the band’s analog synths and drum machines in glorious hi-fi, and the visuals were nothing short of stunning. Whether you’re a hardcore fan or even a casual listener of Kraftwerk’s more popular tunes, it’s not a date to be missed if the ongoing tour comes near your town. They haven’t toured the US since 2016 and only few and far between prior to that. One day, Kraftwerk’s “3D Tour” might be stuff of legend. The overall production of the performance is just that good.

Kraftwerk’s “3D Tour” runs through July . You can get tickets here .

Kraftwerk Bringing Immersive ‘3-D Concerts’ Back to North America in 2022

By Jon Blistein

Jon Blistein

Kraftwerk will return with their immersive “3-D concerts” for a North American tour next summer.

The 2022 trek will kick off May 27 at the Pageant in St. Louis, Missouri, and wrap July 10 at the Orpheum Theatre in Vancouver. Tickets will go on sale this Friday, Nov. 5 , at 10 a.m. local time. A pre-sale for American Express cardholders in select markets will run from Nov. 2 at 10 a.m. local time through Nov. 4 at 10 p.m. local time. Full information is available on Kraftwerk’s website .

Kraftwerk had originally planned to embark on a “3-D concert” tour of North America back in 2020 , coinciding with the pioneering electronic group’s 50th anniversary, but the run was called off due to the pandemic. The shows — which began after a retrospective at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City and have evolved since — combine Kraftwerk’s music with three-dimensional visuals and performance art.

“Our music is changing in time, so we always play different versions; sometimes we change the tempos and sound,” Kraftwerk’s lead singer and keyboardist Ralf Hütter told Rolling Stone of the 3-D concerts prior to the group’s 2015 U.S. tour. “Sometimes there’s different traffic on the autobahn. It’s all real. That’s what makes it interesting. Our compositions are like minimalistic film scripts or theater scripts. We can work with this; it’s never going to be the same. It changes over the years.”

Over the weekend, Kraftwerk were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, with longtime fan Pharrell Williams paying tribute to the group. “Today, electronic music is everywhere,” Pharrell said. “But what Kraftwerk did was groundbreaking and revolutionary.”

Review: kraftwerk at tsb arena, wellington, 29 november 2023.

By Nic Gorman*

Kraftwerk at the TSB Arena in Wellington, November 2023.

Review - It has been 14 years since German electronic music pioneers Kraftwerk last played in New Zealand, and since then the band's long-term multimedia project exploring the synthesis between humanity and technology has grown further congruous.

In an age where large language models like ChatGPT present an approximation of human thought and speech to boost productivity, Kraftwerk's man-machine feels very present.

They're visiting on the busiest week for live music in Wellington that I can remember, but the TSB Arena is still packed and the crowd are friendly, social and excited for the show in that slightly nervous sort of way you get with beloved nostalgia acts.

The show begins. At the front of the stage, each standing behind a lit-up plinth, are four German men in Tron suits. They are largely indistinguishable from each other, which is deliberate - the band's image was always about the collective; each individual subsumed into the whole. The music too is a perfect sum of its parts; sequenced electronic music with simple melodies that sit behind minimal and modernist lyrics.

Of the four current members of Kraftwerk - Ralf Hütter, Fritz Hilpert, Henning Schmitz, and Falk Grieffenhagen - Ralf is the sole original member, and the only one who has a microphone.

Kraftwerk at the TSB Arena in Wellington, November 2023.

Their show opens with a pair of songs from the Computer World album: 'Numbers' and 'Computer World'. Ralf's voice is older, there's a vulnerability present as he chants the technocratic refrain of "Interpol and Deutsche Bank… FBI and Scotland Yard", imbibing these institutions with a surveillant resonance that could not have been imagined in 1982. The largely impressive visuals are at their best here - numbers drip down the walls Matrix-style, consuming the musicians beneath a stream of data.

People were starting to dance by the time the slinky synth line of 'The Man-Machine' appeared.

Later, in 'Autobahn', Ralf,'s voice presented itself briefly raw, without filter. Throughout the show the occasional minor mistake gave a human note to the proceedings as we are reminded that these are human musicians working in their electronic garden.

A highlight was 'Radioactive', a reminder of the potential for nuclear destruction. "Chernobyl, Harrisburg, Sellafield, Fukushima" pulsed on the screen, as the bass put a dent into our bodies.

My favourite of the night was 'Trans Europe Express', intoxicating with its drive and sense of cool; a nostalgia for a future that we never got (a network of passenger railway lines!), the bassline chugging with the train engine, intimate and elegiac; endless, endless.

Then into 'The Robots', the closest thing to a pop song tonight. By now the aisles are full of dancers, some dancing with their phones held aloft in a perfect synthetic symbiosis. 'Musique Non Stop' is the closer before a polite ritual as each member shuffles off the stage one by one. Last to leave is Ralf Hütter, and the loudest applause of the night is given to celebrate this pioneer, this conceptual wizard. It was a special night with music that left an imprint.

It was as perfect a show as it was expected. I was seated where I booked. Local signalling was efficient. The stage well seen. The loudspeakers just as loud as necessary.

The band started off with both 3D screen effects and electronic music. They played their biggest hits one after the other, for my utmost enjoyment. After being recalled, they played 4 songs, ending up with a remarkable series of solos. It was simply grandiose and well organised.

This is odd.

Why would I write a review of this show for for free?

I mean, music journalism is a job. There's professionals that do it for a living. Yet songkick expect me to spend my time and creativity generating content for them to attract other users.

I suppose Songkick will then ask those unwitting victims to slave over a keyboard for no reward and perpetuate the culture of unpaid work that only serves to cheapen music criticism we should all cherish.

I will not take money out of the pocket and food off the table of journalists forced to scrape for what minimal pay they can from a dwindling base of music publications that are only just able to continue charging for their valuable insight.

I mean, who am I? No-one could place any value in a word of what I write. It would serve no purpose whatsoever for me to give my amateur opinion of a band about who millions of words have already been written when no-one has any context on which to base my thoughts. I could be a complete buffoon. I could like Crazy frog as much as Kraftwerk.

OK, here you are. I went to see Kraftwerk and Kraftwerk was good. There was some mistakes but they were still good.

There you are. Now lets see how that settles into the cannon of great criticism.

Lester Bangs will be spinning in his grave.
