Table of Contents

Port Everglades Cruise Parking – The 3 available options:

  • SHIP-SIDE PARKING AT PORT EVERGLADES
  • COMMERCIAL OFF-SITE PARKING (private lots near the Port)
  • HOTEL PARKING

What is best for some may not work for others so ultimately you have to pick what fits your budget and needs!

Port Everglades Cruise Terminal and Area Google Map

Here is a detailed map of the Port Everglades Cruise Ship terminals and parking lots for passengers. You will find accurate locations of:

  • Cruise Hotels
  • Port Everglades Rental Car Agencies
  • Cruise Terminals
  • Cruise Terminal Parking lots and garages
  • Public Transportation Maps – Trolley

I also include information about Fort Lauderdale and Dania Beach.

Port Everglades Parking Ship-side: The most convenient and expensive option

Here is a map of the cruise terminals and parking garages/lots at Port Everglades. For the latest updates, please study the online Google Map above!

Port Everglades Terminals and Parking Map (Midport = Palm, Northport = Heron)

Officially the parking garages open at 10:30 am for entry. In reality, you can arrive earlier but on busy days the attendants may direct you to wait elsewhere.  And if you arrive too early then you have to deal with vehicles slowly departing the current cruise meaning you may not get a spot near the elevators (yet)!

  • You drive up to the cruise terminal, drop your family and/or luggage at the porters, then
  • Drive around to park your vehicle in a nearby undercover or open parking lot, and
  • Walk back to meet your family.

No hassles, no crowds, and no waiting on shuttle buses especially after your cruise when the family is tired and a bit grumpy!

TIP – Please know there are many signs and attendants ready to direct you when you arrive at the cruise terminal. DO NOT BE WORRIED about a thing! Just get yourself to the correct terminal and the attendants will show you where to drop your luggage, where to park, how to pay, etc .

This convenience is not cheap ($20 per day – you must include your departure and arrival days). Credit cards only. Attendants are available in case you need assistance.

3 NIGHT CRUISE – $80 4 NIGHT CRUISE – $100 5 NIGHT CRUISE – $120 6 NIGHT CRUISE – $140 7 NIGHT CRUISE – $160 8 NIGHT CRUISE – $180

Oversized vehicles such as RVs must park in open-surface lots nearby. Special rates apply.

For the latest information please visit the Official Port Everglades Parking website

Specific Terminal Notes:

Port Everglades has installed new, colorful, driver-friendly wayfinding signs in the parking garages, parking lots, and throughout the Port’s roadways.

The signs feature Florida wildlife and fauna with illustrations of a bright orange heron (bird) in the port’s Northport section, a green palm (plant)  in Midport, and a blue snook (fish) directing customers to Southport.

When you arrive at any of the three port entry checkpoints, an electronic information board displays your ship name and cruise terminal. Then you follow the signs to your terminal and parking garage or lot.

Cruise Parking at Port Everglades - Port Entrance

We suggest:

  • Use the 17th Street (Eisenhower Blvd) Entrance for Terminals 2 and 4
  • Use the Eller Drive Security Entrance for Terminals 18, 19, 21, 25, 29

Terminal 2 – Carnival

Secure, Covered Parking in the 1,818-space Heron Parking Garage. An air-conditioned, elevated passenger bridge with moving sidewalks connects Terminal 2 and the Heron Garage and can be accessed from the 5th floor of the Heron Garage or the elevators on the outside of Cruise Terminal 2.

In the image below, see how you drive into Terminal 2 to drop off your luggage and passengers (ground level). Then you drive out and keep left up the ramp and into the Heron parking garage. Try to park on level 5 so you can easily get to the passenger bridge!

Port Everglades Parking Off-site Near the Port – Shuttle bus services at a lower cost

There are only two viable commercial off-site Port Everglades parking options – Park by the Ports and Park N Go as shown below.  There are also a couple of booking agents – online companies that offer parking via discounted contracts with local hotels and parking partners.

Park Port Everglades Offsite Map

If you drive up on the day of your cruise looking for discounted parking, off-site parking will save you money. You will use a shuttle bus to and from the cruise terminals – it is not as convenient as ship-side parking – but cheaper!

If you stayed at a hotel you will most likely park your vehicle at the hotel for the duration of your cruise. Generally speaking, the hotel security is not as good as the fenced & gated off-site parking facilities. So you have to consider more than just cost when comparing your parking options.

Booking Agents

When you search online for cruise parking at Port Everglades, you will see ads for several booking agents. These online agents don’t own parking lots (or transport vans in most cases). Instead, they have agreements with local hotels, parking facilities, and transport companies to sell parking spaces/transfers online – often at a discount to the consumer.

They change partners and rates quite often and it is hard to keep up with their parking options! Please visit their respective websites for the latest choices.

Typical hotels contracted close to the Port – Embassy Suites, Renaissance, Rodeway Inn, etc. There are many others but those are typically further away such as in Dania Beach near I-95.

How does it work? Typically (with exceptions – check your booking confirmation) – You will receive directions and phone numbers to call before arrival at the Parking Lots and after your cruise (wait in the shuttle area). These are on-demand services so be prepared to wait for drivers and/or representatives of the ground operators (Quick & Safe for example).

How safe is it to book parking with agents instead of booking directly with a parking facility? Agents come and go and change names and partners all the time. So it is impossible to generalize but you should be OK with established agents. Just know that you are not dealing directly with a parking facility/operator. Should something go wrong, you cannot address the problem in person at a parking facility. You must deal with an online agent who may be thousands of miles away from Fort Lauderdale! Here are two agents:

  • Rightway Parking – A nationwide agency with parking partners at many airports and cruise ports. At Port Everglades, they partner with hotels and shuttle companies (e.g. Quick & Safe, All Stars Transportation) – not with the two top parking operators. Daily rates vary considerably. See the locations on the Google MAP above.
  • Tropical Airport Parking – Partner with several hotels near Port Everglades, not with the two top parking operators. Daily rates vary considerably. You will probably use hotel shuttles and some of these cost EXTRA – please check carefully before booking.

Quick & Safe Parking

Cost Comparison

2024 rates. Always check the websites for the latest pricing because they change often. Book online for the best rates :

Ship-side parking  for 8 days, 7-night cruise –  $160

  • Park N Go . Cheaper to pay online instead of the gate = $93 for 8 days.
  • Park by the Ports . Best to book online = $94 for 8 days.

Generally speaking, the following rules apply when parking off-site:

  • Lots are secured behind a fence with security lights.
  • Port shuttles are generally free for up to 4 passengers. Extra charges apply to larger families.
  • Do not arrive before 9:30 am. The staff will be busy helping returning cruisers until then.
  • The first shuttle typically departs around 10:30 am to the ships. The last shuttle typically departs at 2:45 pm.
  • Unless valet parking is required, YOU drop YOUR passengers and luggage, then park the vehicle and walk back to the check-in point.
  • Shuttles run continuously every 15-45 minutes (depending on bookings and time of day).

Location considerations for off-site parking:

  • Park ‘N Go   – Close to the Eller Dr security checkpoint. Very easy to in and out once you figure out the directions! From I-595 east – Take the Port Everglades exit (the overpass). Make a 90-degree left at the McIntosh Rd intersection and drive 0.5 miles to the driveway on the RIGHT. (Just past the four-way traffic-light intersection). Very secure and certainly the most popular of the offsite parking operators.

Park 'N Go Entrance

  • Park by the Ports – Parking is in a back section part of the Casino parking lot in Dania Beach. The cheapest offsite option but much further away than Park N Go – about 5 miles, at least 15 minutes. While the Casino parking lot has surveillance, the vehicles are not parked behind gates. This operator offers a shuttle tracker online – a nice feature! No RV parking.

Park by the Ports Entrance

Port Everglades Parking At Hotels Near The Port

– Please look for an upcoming article about cheap hotel parking options –

We think you will find excellent parking deals at the hotels! You can expect daily parking rates starting around $6 including a return Port shuttle for at least 2 persons.

Many hotels near Port Everglades offer Park & Cruise packages with free (not really!) or discounted parking for the duration of your cruise. Park & Cruise Packages cannot be used with other discounts and there are limitations such as holiday blackouts.

TIP – Do not worry about parking until much later in the booking process. First, book the perfect hotel for your family, then start to think about your parking options.

For example, if you have young kids who like pools then pick a hotel with a fun pool design. If you want to watch the cruise ships come and go then pick another. Or do you want to overlook the ocean and beach, or just hope to stay as cheap as possible anywhere within 30 minutes or so from the port?

So how do you know if you are getting a good hotel deal?

A] ask the following questions:.

– Is breakfast included? – Are airport transfers included? You may not need this service. – Is the Park & Cruise Package available for your stay and cruise dates? – Cruise terminal shuttle transfers should be included but usually only for 2 persons (adult or child). How much will it cost for others in your family? On average expect to pay between $5 and $10 extra per person EACH WAY! – If you do not book the package, how much is parking per day for the duration of your cruise? – How long is the shuttle drive to the cruise terminal and how often do the shuttles run? Many hotels offer only one free shuttle to the cruise terminal per day – around 10:30 am – and a few return shuttles from the ships at specified times.

B] Use hotel booking sites to find the best rates for your hotel for your travel dates.

This will give you a good idea of the discounted room rate. Then you have to add the parking costs and shuttle costs to compare packages and deals.

Luckily, we’re here to walk you through all of your options. This guide covers:

Parking at Port Everglades

  • Parking at third-party lots around Port Everglades
  • Park and cruise deals at nearby hotels
  • Parking at the Fort Lauderdale Airport
  • RV and camper parking near Port Everglades
  • And much more!

So, keep reading to discover prices, amenities, and more for every parking option near Port Everglades. Then, you can reserve your space in only a few quick clicks and head out on your vacation with the peace of mind that your spot is secure and waiting for you on the day of your cruise.

Parking at Port Everglades is incredibly convenient and a great way to start your vacation hassle-free. Parking at the official terminal lots costs $15 per day for cars and $19 per day for oversized vehicles (though they warn they can’t accommodate vehicles longer than 20 feet). Disabled parking is free with certain qualifications.

Port Everglades has parking in covered garages and in surface lots and the rates for both spots are the same. The three options currently available are the Northport Parking Garage, the Midpoint Parking Garage, and the Midpoint Surface Lot (the Northport Surface Lot is currently under construction).

All three are illuminated, patrolled by 24/7 security guards, and handicap accessible, so the only deciding factor depends on which terminal your cruise departs from. The Northport garage serves terminals one and two, the Midpoint Garage serves 19, 21, 22/24, 25, 26, 27 and 29, and the Midpoint surface lot serves terminal 18. Click here to read more about the official parking at Port Everglades.

Parking Near Port Everglades

Some popular parking near Port Everglades outside of the official terminal lots are with companies like FLL Park Safe, Gold Coast Cruise & Fly Parking, and Park by the Ports.

FLL Park Safe costs 8.99 per day, so you’ll save $42 when you choose this lot over the terminal parking. However, it does not offer free shuttles to the port, so cruise passengers will have to pay an extra fee to reach it.

Gold Coast Cruise & Fly parking costs $52 for a seven-day reservation with taxes and fees, so you’ll save $53 when you choose this over parking at the port. They also offer a free shuttle to and from Port Everglades for extra savings. Just be sure to bring cash when you arrive, because Gold Coast Cruise & Fly charges a $5 service fee when you pay with a credit card.

Park by the Ports is the cheapest option for parking near Port Everglades of the three in this roundup. Spots cost only $4.99 per day, so parking for a seven-day cruise will run you $35 and net you a total savings of $75 when compared with the official cruise parking at Port Everglades. They also offer free shuttle services to and from the terminal with your parking reservation.

All three of these lots near Port Everglades have the option to pre-book your space online for peace of mind. With one of these reservations in hand, you know you’ll have a spot ready and waiting when it’s time to set sail.

Cruise Parking at Hotels in Fort Lauderdale

Because parking in Fort Lauderdale can be expensive, hotels offer free parking as an incentive to get guests to book. Cruise parking packages at hotels usually require staying only one night to secure free or discounted parking for your cruise, but, of course, every package and price varies.

This list of hotels with cruise parking from USA Today can help you get started on your search. If you’re coming to Fort Lauderdale a day or two before your cruise departs from Port Everglades and are planning to book a night in a hotel anyway, choosing one with free cruise parking can definitely help you save some money!

Cruise Parking at the Fort Lauderdale Airport

Did you know the Fort Lauderdale Airport is only about four miles from Port Everglades? This proximity means airport parking can be a great option to help you save money while you’re on your cruise.

The official airport lots have “more than 12,000 spaces for hourly and daily onsite parking. We keep these areas well lit and guarded by security patrols for your safety and peace of mind.” They cost $25 per day for curbside valet services, $15 per day for the Hibiscus, Palm, and Cyprus garages, and $10 for parking in the overflow lot. It’s safe to say your car is in good hands at the Fort Lauderdale Airport because they even won a National Parking Association Innovation Award for their services!

The Fort Lauderdale Airport also has their own FLL parking app to help you quickly and easily locate spaces when you drop your car off and to find it again when you come back – sun-soaked and relaxed – after your cruise to pick it up again.

Off-site parking around the airport (and therefore around Port Everglades) is also available through third-party lots not affiliated with the airport. Most of them offer shuttle services to the airport but it may be cheaper to just take an Uber from the lot to Port Everglades instead. Airport Parking Reservations lists many different options to choose from and some are as low as $4.99 per night!

Parking RVs and Campers Near Port Everglades

Parking an RV at Port Everglades costs $19 per day, which adds up to $133 for a week-long cruise. If you want to cut that cost (or, if your RV or camper is larger than the maximum 20 feet allowed in the Port Everglades Parking lots), we’ve got a few more options for you.

FLL Park Safe offers gated RV, bus, camper, and trailer parking with 24/7 security on the lot. They also have a (non-complimentary) shuttle to Port Everglades from the lot but you can easily grab an Uber or Lyft as well. The website states that “Because space is limited for RVs and busses, we are unable to process these reservations online. So please give us a call to inquire about pricing and we’ll be happy to book your reservation over the phone!”

If your RV is too big for the Port Everglades parking and the spots at FLL Park Safe are fully booked, you can also take advantage of the short-term storage option at the Yacht Haven Park & Marina as well, where off-site RV storage during your cruise will cost $20 per day.

Free Parking near Port Everglades

Some things are just too good to be true, and free parking in Fort Lauderdale is one of them. If you want to avoid the hefty price tags that come along with caring for your car while you’re on a cruise, the only true way to do that is to leave it at home.

If you’re traveling from another part of the state, consider taking a bus to Fort Lauderdale through services like Megabus or Red Coach to reach your cruise instead of driving into the city on your own. Tickets are often as low as $10 or less on popular routes, and you’ll save big on parking, gas, and tolls if you go this route as well. Then, once you’re in Fort Lauderdale, it’s easy to navigate the city by foot, by public transport, and with ridesharing apps like Uber and Lyft.

If you’re planning to rent a car for your trip, simply return it before you cruise and then pick it up again once you’re done. A quick Uber ride from the rental offices at the Fort Lauderdale Airport to Port Everglades is a small price to pay to avoid the bigger parking fees you’ll rack up while you’re at sea.

Complete Guide to Port Everglades Parking and Hotels

Last Updated on June 13, 2023 by Greg Bessoni

The Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale is a mainstay economic hub in Florida that directly supports over 230,000 jobs locally. It’s a major cargo port for petroleum products, including jet fuel and gasoline. It holds the title of one of the top three busiest cruise ports in the world.  If you’re sailing out of Fort Lauderdale’s port and searching for Port Everglades parking, you’ve come to the right spot!

Port Everglades Cruise Parking

Cruise lines that serve Port Everglades are Carnival Cruise Line, Celebrity Cruises, Holland America Line, Princess Cruises, Royal Caribbean International, Balearia Caribbean, Cunard, and Silversea Cruises.

Parking at Port Everglades

Getting Into The Port Everglades

There are three entrances to the port. On Eisenhower Boulevard, there’s the 17th Street Causeway. On Spangler Boulevard, there’s an entrance through State Road 84. You can also get in via I-595 East. It’s recommended that you don’t arrive at Port Everglades before noon in order to avoid high traffic in the morning.

When driving into the port, make sure you have your cruise documents and government-issued photo ID handy for the security checkpoint. If you don’t drive in yourself, you can use public or private transportation to get dropped off after flying into the nearby Fort Lauderdale International Airport (only 2 miles away) or Miami Airport .

On-Site Parking At The Port Everglades

parking at port everglades cruise port

On-site Port Everglades parking garages and lots are available within walking distance. Special accommodations are available for disabled parking and oversized vehicles. Terminals 4, 18, and 19 have outdoor service lots. Garages nearby include the Northport Parking Garage and the Midport Parking Garage, and you can see the Port Everglades parking map for exact locations of car parks.

Port Everglades parking  is close to the terminals, but it’s suggested that you drop off other passengers with your luggage directly in front of your designated cruise terminal before your park the car. If you park at the Midport Garage, you can take a free shuttle straight to Terminal 29. Heron Parking Garage is near terminals 2 and 4, while Palm Parking Garage is convenient for cruisers who start their journey at terminals 19, 21, 25, 26, 27, and 29. Terminal 18 offers its own surface parking lot.

How much is parking at Port Everglades?

The price of $15 per day is the same in all surface parking lots and each cruise parking garage. Cash and credit cards are accepted as you leave the lot and finish your parking stay. If you come back to find your car with a flat tire or dead battery, emergency service is available to help.

Off-Site Port Everglades Cruise Parking

Located at 101 Eller Drive, Ft. Lauderdale, Park ‘N Go requires that you leave your keys and use their valet parking attendants to bring your car to a parking lot with security. Ratings for this service are excellent. After you drop off your keys, a shuttle service brings you to the port at no extra charge. They also provide free assistance with luggage. For this option, it’s cheaper to book in advance—the online rate is $7.99 per day.

For longer cruises, you can also try  Park ‘N Fly , which is less than a mile from the port. They provide valet parking and shuttle service directly to your cruise terminal. The cost per day is cut significantly (by almost 50%) if you plan to park for six days or more. If you won’t be back on land for a while, this is definitely an option worth checking into. The online price is $9.99 per day.

Getting Dropped Off At The Port

If you don’t want to bother with your own car, you can use rideshare, taxi, or a paid shuttle bus  available through many transportation companies. Complimentary shuttles are not available, but calling up a local car rental company will give you the current rate for a shuttle to the cruise port.

A few trains also go by the port, including Brightline, Tri-Rail, and Amtrak. Brightline provides local connections from Miami and West Palm Beach. Its Fort Lauderdale stop is located at 101 NW 2nd Avenue. The Tri-Rail is a commuter line with its nearest stop to the port located at 500 Gulf Stream Way in Dania Beach. The Tri-Rail provides direct transportation to the Miami International Airport. Amtrak stops are all over the country, and it has two locations near the Port Everglades: Fort Lauderdale Station (200 S.W. 21st Terrace) and Hollywood Station (3001 Hollywood Boulevard). Amtrak can be pricey depending on how far you plan to go, but it offers some nice perks for travelers (like WiFi).

Several local bus lines are also available to deliver you to the port. Apart from local Florida buses, you can also use larger nationwide buses ( Greyhound  and  Megabus ). If you’re staying in a hotel, call ahead about shuttle services to the cruise port. Many area hotels offer transportation to the port for guests.

Park & Cruise Deals by Fort Lauderdale Hotels

There are many Cruise & Snooze deals available at Fort Lauderdale hotels near Port Everglades. Plus, most  park and fly hotels  offer cruise options. Some examples include:

  • Hilton Garden Inn is 5 miles from the Port Everglades has a package deal that includes an overnight stay, parking for $4/day, and a 24-hour shuttle to the port.
  • A stay at the Cambria Hotel and Suites includes Port Everglades cruise parking plus a $10 shuttle to the cruise terminal.
  • If you want to stay near the airport, you can choose the Comfort Suites for as low as $7/day parking and a $10 shuttle to the cruise port.
  • The Best Western Plus only costs $5/day for parking while you’re on the cruise and has a $12 shuttle to the airport.

If you wish to leave your car at the Port Everglades, there seems to be no reason not to. Other than having to pay the daily fee, there are no downsides to Port Everglades parking either on-site or using a nearby valet service. You have several convenient lots to choose from that have great reputations.

If you fly to Florida, the Fort Lauderdale International Airport will get you close to the Port Everglades. From there, you can choose from a variety of affordable ride services and shuttles. If you decide to fly into the Miami Airport, check into local trains or buses to avoid the cost of a private ride.

Whichever way you get there, be sure to give yourself extra time to check out the artwork featured at the cruise terminals before embarking on your cruise. You should plan to arrive two hours before your scheduled departure time to make sure you don’t miss your boat. Don’t fret about the wait time, the terminals are comfortable with air conditioning, snack machines, and WiFi.

Fort Lauderdale and Port Everglades - Cruise Ship Ports

Popular Caribbean Cruise Ship Embarkation Ports

parking at port everglades cruise port

Fort Lauderdale (Ft. Lauderdale) is used by several cruise lines as an embarkation and disembarkation point for Caribbean cruises. The actual port in Ft. Lauderdale is known as Port Everglades, and it is the third-busiest cruise port in the world, drawing almost 3 million cruise passengers in its 11 cruise terminals. If you were to look at a topographical map of the eastern seaboard of the United States, you will see that Port Everglades is the deepest harbor south of Norfolk.

History of Fort Lauderdale and Port Everglades

Ft. Lauderdale is often called the "Venice of America" because of its 270 miles of natural and artificial waterways. The city was founded by Major William Lauderdale during the Seminole War of 1837-1838. The city grew rapidly during the land boom in Florida during the 1920s. Ft. Lauderdale has continued to grow, and its metro area now has over 4.5 million residents.

Port Everglades is an artificial harbor that got off to a somewhat inauspicious start. A developer named Joseph Young purchased 1440 acres in the 1920s for the Hollywood Harbor Development Company. President Calvin Coolidge was brought to Ft. Lauderdale on February 28, 1927, and asked to press the explosion detonator to open the harbor. Thousands gathered to watch the show. Unfortunately, he pushed the detonator and nothing happened! The harbor was unceremoniously opened later that day, and the new seaport was named Port Everglades in 1930.

Getting to Ft. Lauderdale and Port Everglades

By air -- Access to the large cruise terminal is easy and only about 2 miles (5 minutes) from the Ft. Lauderdale airport. Cruise line buses meet inbound flights for transfer to the port if you make arrangements in advance. If you choose to take a taxi from the airport to the pier, it should cost less than $20. Port Everglades is only about 30 minutes north of the Miami International Airport, so that is an additional option for cruisers.

By car -- For those that arrive at the port via car, Port Everglades has 3 passenger entrances: Spangler Boulevard, Eisenhower Boulevard, and Eller Drive. There are two large parking garages that cost $15 per 24-hour period in October 2008. The 2,500-space Northport Parking Garage next to the Ft. Lauderdale Convention Center serves terminals 1, 2, and 4. The 2,000-space Midport Parking Garage is closer to terminals 18, 19, 21, 22, 24, 25, and 26. Both garages have controlled security, are well-lighted, and will accommodate recreation vehicles (RVs) and buses.

Things to Do Before (or After) Your Cruise from Ft. Lauderdale

Visit a Beach Those of us who grew up during the 1950s and 1960s remember Ft. Lauderdale as a popular spring vacation destination for college students. Ft. Lauderdale is no longer the "in place" for college students, but it still has over 20 miles of beautiful beaches and great weather . The city also has hundreds of miles of navigable canals and waterways. Ft. Lauderdale spent over $20 million renovating the beach area a few years ago, and the area looks wonderful. Florida A1A shares the beach road with Atlantic Boulevard.

If you only have a short time to spend before boarding, you might want to go over to John U. Lloyd Beach State Recreation area across from the port. The park is excellent for fishing or for watching the cruise ships and other craft go in and out of the port. The beach is broad and flat and popular with swimmers and sun bathers. (You can start your tan early!) The beach is also one of Broward County's most important sea turtle nesting sites, and is also home to many of the endangered Florida manatees.

Go Shopping Want to do some last minute shopping? Las Olas Boulevard is an upscale street of shopping boutiques, often thought of as the "Rodeo Drive" of Ft. Lauderdale. Las Olas is good for strolling and window shopping and also has several good restaurants. Serious bargain shoppers might want to check out the Sawgrass Mills Mall on Sunrise Boulevard. This mall has over a mile of shops! Another popular shopping area is the Fort Lauderdale Swap Shop, a huge flea market also on Sunrise Boulevard.

See the Sights of Ft. Lauderdale The Museum of Discovery and Science is a fun interactive science museum with an IMAX Theater. The Museum of Art on Las Olas Boulevard is small, but has a good collection of modern and contemporary art. If you are into history, you might want to check out the Bonnet House. This estate is located on 35 acres and reflects the lives of the "pioneers" of the Ft. Lauderdale area. Butterfly World features over 150 species of butterflies. Visitors walk through a screened-in aviary and have an opportunity to see all stages of the life of a butterfly.

Take a Riverfront Cruise in Ft. Lauderdale If you can't wait to get on the water, you might want to explore Ft. Lauderdale on a day cruise. Riverfront Cruises will take you on a 1.5 hour cruise to see the fascinating sights along the New River, the Intracoastal Waterway, and Port Everglades.

Breaking Down All Major Cruise Departure Ports In The U.S. And What Makes Each Unique

E xperience the explosive growth of the cruise industry firsthand as we explore the major departure ports in the United States. Don’t be left behind; join the millions of satisfied cruisers who have discovered the ultimate vacation experience. But we know that hopping on board can be intimidating, especially when choosing the right port, ship, and cruise line. That’s why I’m here to guide you through it all.

Starting in the North Atlantic and working our way down to the South Atlantic, including the bustling ports of Florida, we’ll cover everything you need to know. We’ll then move on to the Gulf of Mexico and, finally, the beautiful Pacific. Learn about several American ports, from suggestions on getting to the port to a detailed list of all the cruise lines that sail from each location.

But that’s not all — I’ll also highlight each port’s unique features and attractions so you can make the most of your vacation before and after embarking on your cruise. Get ready for a vacation that gives you the most bang for your buck — starting with the perfect departure port.

Buckle in and get your popcorn; this will be a long one.

North Atlantic

The North Atlantic region has quite a few ports. It primarily sails to Bermuda, New England, and Canada. However, they also do trans-Atlantic and other specialty cruises from a few ports.

Pro Tip : Always label and prepare your luggage for easy transport . When driving, simply drive to the cruise terminal and hand over your bags. No need to fret if you need tape or a stapler — the friendly baggage handlers will assist you. Remember to show appreciation by tipping them before parking or returning your car.

Boston Cruise Port – Raymond L. Flynn Black Falcon Terminal (Massachusetts)

Simplify your cruise parking experience at the Flynn Cruiseport in the Seaport District near Boston Harbor. Park easily at Congress Street parking or take a free shuttle from your hotel. Boston Logan International Airport is just a quick 10-minute drive away. The MBTA Silver Line bus stops within one block of the terminal for even more convenience.

Parking will cost you $27 per night.

Sailing From Here: Celebrity, Holland America , Norwegian, Royal Caribbean, Seabourn

Points Of Interest: Boston Fish Pier, Fenway Park, Paul Revere House, Old North Church, Boston Children’s Museum, Boston Tea Party Ships & Museum.

Brooklyn Cruise Terminal (Red Hook Section, New York)

Discover the best cruise ports in New York. Brooklyn and Cape Liberty (in Bayonne, New Jersey) take center stage, with Manhattan playing a supporting role. As a premier cruise destination, New York offers voyages to Canada, the Caribbean, Europe, and beyond.

Parking at Brooklyn Cruise Port may seem challenging, but a constant flow of arrivals and departures keeps things moving. While the $45 daily fee offers stunning views of the Statue of Liberty, other convenient options are available, such as private taxis, Uber, shuttles, or the subway. For a unique experience, consider taking the train from Penn Station or Grand Central Station.

Sailing From Here: Cunard , MSC Cruises, Princess

Points Of Interest: Brooklyn Bridge, Brooklyn Botanic Garden, Prospect Park

Fun Fact: Per CLIA (Cruise Lines International Association), most cruise passengers arrive in a port city a day in advance and spend nearly $400 per person on food, hotel, and transportation.

Cape Liberty Cruise Port (New Jersey)

Parking is slightly cheaper here than at Brooklyn’s cruise port and there are overflow lots during the busy season with free shuttles available. Cars run $30 per day and RVs $60.

Sailing From Here: Celebrity , Royal Caribbean

Points Of Interest: Teardrop Memorial, Hudson River Waterfront, The Mills at Jersey Gardens (outlet mall)

Port Of Baltimore (Maryland)

I find the Baltimore cruise port one of the most accessible places to embark in the country. Parking is $15 daily (cashless) and you can walk to the terminal after parking. There is also RV parking for $30–$40 daily, depending on the size of your rig. Royal Caribbean and Carnival both offer shuttles to and from BWI airport.

Sailing From Here: Carnival, Disney, Norwegian, Princess , Royal Caribbean

Points Of Interest: National Aquarium, Inner Harbor, Maryland Zoo, Fort McHenry National Monument & Historic Shrine

South Atlantic/Florida

Welcome to the sunniest region in the world, where cruise passengers flock in droves! With state-of-the-art terminals and buzzing activity, this destination offers an incredible array of choices. However, be prepared to master the art of patience, as navigating through crowds can be challenging. As someone who has been on 54 cruises, I can attest that more than half of my voyages have departed from these ports.

Port Canaveral (Orlando, Florida)

Prepare to be amazed! Contrary to popular belief, getting to Port Orlando (also known as Port Canaveral) requires a 48-minute drive, as Orlando is not on the coast. Despite the distance and expense of transportation (an Uber is $98), Port Orlando remains the country’s busiest and most powerful cruise port. Your best option is to take the cruise shuttle from Orlando (airport or hotel) to save the hassle of getting there, traffic, and parking fees. If you decide to drive, however, keep in mind that parking costs $17 per day, including RVs.

Sailing From Here: Carnival, Disney , MSC Cruises, Norwegian, Royal Caribbean

Port Of Miami (Florida)

Discover the colossal cruise port just minutes away from Fort Lauderdale. PortMiami is a bustling hub, welcoming an impressive average of 12 cruise ships daily and 4.1 million passengers annually. Boasting 11 cruise terminals, it is the second busiest cruise port in the country.

While you can park at the port for $22 a day, I highly recommend avoiding the chaos by opting for Uber or a hotel shuttle. With my 10 years of experience living in Florida, I found navigating the port’s parking confusing and lacking proper signage. Thankfully, there are much simpler alternatives to reaching your cruise ship.

But fear not! Despite the initial challenges, PortMiami (known as the Cruise Capital of the World ) is renowned for its efficiency and seamless operation. Like a finely tuned machine, they ensure a hassle-free experience from start to finish. Indulge in the modern marvel that is PortMiami and embark on your dream cruise effortlessly.

Pro Tip: It is important to park in the garage that coincides with your terminal letter (example: Cruise Terminal B — Multi-Level Garage B); though terminals F, G, and V all use Garage G.

Port Everglades (Fort Lauderdale, Florida)

This one may throw you for a loop since Port Everglades is the cruise port you’ll want for departing out of Fort Lauderdale. It is only 3 miles from FLL/Hollywood Airport and 25 miles north of Miami International Airport. Uber or Lyft is your best bet and is relatively inexpensive. Secure parking at Port Everglades (4,000 spaces) runs $15 per day or $19 for oversized vehicles.

Tampa is a treat to sail out of, as the cruise terminal and port are well-marked and laid out. It is secure and monitored 24/7. Parking is $16 per day, or you can use Uber or Lyft for getting dropped off or picked up. Tampa International Airport is 21 minutes from the Port Tampa Bay Cruise Terminal or 90 minutes from Orlando (MCO).

Discover why San Juan, Puerto Rico, is the ultimate destination for incredible cruise lines. From its advantageous Atlantic Ocean location to potential cost savings, this place is a true gem. If you’re planning a trip, I recommend arriving early and staying overnight to avoid airline hiccups.

While some hotels provide free shuttle services, taxis are readily available for a quick 8-mile journey to the cruise port. Don’t miss out on the opportunity to set sail from Old San Juan, which is a vacation before the cruise vacation begins.

Immerse yourself in vibrant cities and soak up the magic of the gulf. Don’t miss your chance to experience the best-kept secrets of these charming destinations! I plan to include these three embarkation ports in my cruising future over the next few months.

Mobile Alabama Cruise Terminal (Alabama)

While Carnival is the only cruise line that sails from Mobile, it is an excellent option for those seeking a quick vacation option between Texas and Florida. Parking will run you $18 daily, though the closest airport is Pensacola, Florida, an hour away. This is definitely a drive to the cruise port destination. Check out the Mobile Carnival Museum or the USS Alabama in your free time.

Port Of New Orleans (NOLA, Louisiana)

A boatload of ships departs the Port of NOLA, making it the 6th busiest cruise port in the country. It is in the heart of the city with a plethora of amazing things to see and do. It is also a port for the three major river cruises (my bucket list!), which adds a feature most cruise ports don’t offer. Parking runs $25 daily at the Erato and Julia Street terminals.

Enjoy hassle-free parking for just $18 per day (discounts available for prepaying) and take advantage of the close proximity to the cruise terminal from the lots.

Port of Galveston’s only downside? The nearest major airport is 40 minutes away in Houston. However, worry not! Numerous shuttle services are available to whisk you directly to the cruise terminal.

Fun Fact: It is hard to believe that 2.2 million cruise passengers use this terminal annually.

The cruise ports on the West Coast of the United States offer a wide range of fabulous cities, diverse weather, and opportunities for sailing around the area, trans-Pacific crossings, and specialty cruises.

Port Of San Diego (California)

Experience the beauty and convenience of the exceptional Port of San Diego . Getting to the port is a breeze, with various parking options and a convenient cruise ship shuttle from the airport. And that’s only some of it — many cruise lines even offer a complimentary pre-night hotel room.

I personally loved taking advantage of this option before setting sail from the Port of San Diego. Book your cruise now and let the cruise line shuttle take care of the rest. San Diego’s weather is exceptional year-round and the flights are relatively quicker and smoother than in other parts of California. I call this a stress-free cruise port.

Port Of Los Angeles (California)

Discover the luxury and cruise lines variety at World Cruise Center at Port of Los Angeles (actually in San Pedro, California). Arriving at this massive port is a breeze, whether driving a car or using transportation options like shuttles, taxis, or Uber. Parking is $20 per day.

Avoid the high cost of taxis and enjoy a ride from LAX for just $40 with a rideshare service. From John Wayne Airport, expect to pay around $60, though nearly $100 for a taxi. Embark on your dream cruise effortlessly and at a great price from the World Cruise Center.

Set against the backdrop of the majestic Queen Mary , this gem provides an alternative West Coast sailing experience away from the bustling cities. Points Of Interest: Knott’s Berry Farm , Long Beach Museum of Art, Aquarium of the Pacific

Port Of San Francisco (California)

For a city this big, I was surprised that the Port of San Francisco was not busier and bigger, but honestly, it is not one bit intimidating. Parking runs around $18 per day and there are many options for getting there, including bus, Uber, Lyft, and shuttles.

How to Take an Amtrak Train to Cruise Ports Across the USA

Did you know you can take an Amtrak train to cruise ports throughout the US? Most of us don’t live near a cruise port so choices on how to get to your ship are limited. Basically, fly or drive.

Some people (like me!) simply refuse to fly, and that seriously limits travel options to a cruise port. There is a better, relaxed and fun way to begin your cruise vacation:  take an Amtrak train to your cruise port!

Me Aboard Amtrak Train to Cruise Port

How to Take an Amtrak Train to Your Cruise Port

Amtrak is America’s passenger train. Unlike a busy airport, you can arrive at an Amtrak station 45 minutes before your train is scheduled to depart. Check your baggage and wait to hear the station attendant announce the famous “All Aboard.”

After the train car attendant helps you step onboard, you’ll nestle into your sleeping compartment or reclining wide seat. When was the last time that happened on an airplane?

READ MORE: 29 Best Tips for an Amtrak Overnight Train

There are over 500 Amtrak stations in 46 states and Washington, D.C, so there’s bound to be an Amtrak train to get to your cruise ship’s homeport.

Ready to take an Amtrak train to your cruise port? I’ve listed all cruise ports by state and the Amtrak trains to get you there.

Take Amtrak to Florida Cruise Ports

There are two daily overnight trains , operating two different routes running between Boston, New York City and Washington DC, all the way to Miami. Note: as of May 19, 2022, there is only one train running daily between Miami and New York City, the Silver Star. The Silver Meteor is on temporary suspension until September 11, 2022, due to staffing shortage issues.

How to Take Amtrak to Cruise Ports in the USA in a roomette

The current Amtrak train to Florida, the Silver Star, follows much the same route as the Silver Meteor for most of the journey between New York and Miami. The Silver Star includes stops in Jacksonville, Orlando, Winter Park and Miami for cruise ports at Jacksonville, Port Canaveral, Ft. Lauderdale and Miami .

Currently, a section of the Silver Star will veer west from Lakeland to service Tampa and the cruise port. Then continues southbound to Fort Lauderdale and Miami.

Upon arrival at any of the south Florida Amtrak stations, it’s a short taxi ride to the port. But you’ll need to spend an overnight at a hotel because the trains arrive in the late afternoon. But you might do that anyway if you flew to the port.

If you’re cruising from Port Canaveral, I suggest that you plan to depart the train in quaint Winter Park rather than busy Orlando or Kissimmee. At either train stations, you can arrange a car rental or pre-book a shuttle service. It’s an easy, 1-hour drive to Port Canaveral from Winter Park or a local area hotel in Cape Canaveral or Cocoa Beach.

Los Angeles Area Cruise Ports on Amtrak

Long beach and san pedro cruise ports.

Just because you live hundreds or even thousands of miles from the cruise ports in Los Angeles, doesn’t mean spending hours in the sky to get there.

Amtrak operates four almost-transcontinental trains from the east coast, Midwest and southern states as well as an overnight train from Washington state.

Connect in Chicago for a scenic ride aboard the Southwest Chief to Los Angeles, CA

Your overland coast-to-coast journey begins in New York City or Washington DC. Both cities have three overnight trains to Chicago. The next day, westbound from Chicago, there are two trains going directly to Los Angeles; the Texas Eagle via San Antonio in almost three days (due to a long layover in San Antonio, but you’re asleep in your compartment) and the Southwest Chief, a much shorter trip of around 43 hours. The scenery is amazing on both trains.

You can take the California Zephyr from Chicago to Los Angeles but it’s not a direct train. You have to change in Sacramento and then continue on to L.A.

My suggestion? Take the train with the most breathtaking scenery, the California Zephyr, to Sacramento, stay over a couple of nights to have time to visit the incredible California State Railway Museum. You can then catch the historic Coast Starlight at 6:30am and arrive in Los Angeles at 9pm. There are two hotels in a 10-minute walking distance to the train station.

Arrival into the splendidly restored Los Angeles Union Station is an experience in itself. Taxis are available just outside the station.

Take Amtrak for Cruises from New Orleans, Galveston/Houston

Whether you live on the west coast, east coast or the Midwest, you can easily get to the Port of New Orleans and the Texas ports at Houston (Pasadena) and Galveston .

The Sunset Limited, originating in New Orleans and Los Angeles, departs three days a week in either direction. Cruisers from the west coast can depart their train in Houston or New Orleans.

Leaving from Chicago, passengers board the famous City of New Orleans train for a quick overnight ride down to the Big Easy. From there, cruise ships head out to the Caribbean and twice a year Transatlantic crossings to Europe.

New York is the departure point for the Crescent, en route to New Orleans via Philadelphia, Washington DC and Atlanta. Heading to Houston, transfer in New Orleans to the Sunset Limited for a short 9-hour train ride. From Houston, Amtrak provides a dedicated motor coach to Galveston.

All Aboard Amtrak for a  Mississippi River Cruise

Choose an Amtrak train to cruise ports in New Orleans for a Mississippi River cruise or head out to the sunny Caribbean.

Cruise from the Port of New Orleans aboard an authentic paddle wheeler and step back in time on a northbound Mississippi River cruise. Or leave from Chicago aboard the Empire Builder to St. Paul, MN and begin a southbound cruise on the Mississippi. Memphis or St. Louis, too.

Amtrak to Cruise Ports in Seattle and Vancouver

Travel from New York to Chicago and transfer to the Empire Builder to Seattle on one of the most scenic Amtrak train rides in America. Once the train gets to the western side of Montana, the Empire Builder travels straight through Glacier National Park.

There’s even a train stop at one of the National Park Lodges, where you could spend a day or two pre- or post-cruise.

From the Port of Seattle, train passengers can choose either a round-trip 7-night Inside Passage Alaska cruise or a one-way cruise to Anchorage to explore more of the Last Frontier.

Seattle Amtrak Union Station

To take Amtrak to Vancouver for your Alaska cruise, you’ll transfer in Seattle to the Amtrak Cascades train and cross the Canadian border via the train. Because of staffing issues related to the pandemic, the Cascades is on temporary hold through the end of 2022.

Instead, Amtrak has a dedicated motor coach that takes passengers to the Vancouver Union Station. From there, it’s a short taxi ride to downtown Vancouver hotels and the nearby Port of Vancouver.

Those who depart from Seattle for a longer cruise to Asia, Hawaii or even Australia will love Amtrak’s generous luggage regulations. Each person is allowed to carry on 2 bags up to 28” tall and up to 50lbs. Passengers may also check up to 2 bags for free, same height and weight restrictions and 2 additional bags at $20/each. That’s a lot of luggage.

Southern Californians can hop aboard the historic Coast Starlight for an overnight ride to Seattle. Hugging the Pacific Coast for several hours before ascending the Sierra Nevada range, the scenery is spectacular. Not to mention the private lounge and dining car for first-class passengers.

Tips For Taking Amtrak to a Cruise Port

  • ALWAYS arrive the day before, just as you should if you’re flying to your ship.
  • If you’re traveling in coach, bring a light travel blanket and small pillow.
  • First class sleeping compartments include bottled water, juice, sodas, and all meals in the dining car so you don’t need to pack a picnic. Plus, you can always purchase something extra to eat from the Café Car.
  • Rates for sleepers increase as supply decreases. Book your accommodations early. If your plans change, new cancellation penalties allow for some flexibility.
  • Purchase travel insurance that covers missed connections, just in case of a severe delay or if you need to cancel for covered reasons.
  • Print out your timetable from Amtrak’s website.
  • An Amtrak train ride to your embarkation port may not be the solution for everyone, especially for those that are on a time constraint. For people who live in South Dakota, Wyoming or much of Idaho, this probably isn’t an option, either, as there is no train service to these areas.

But for most of us across America, there is an Amtrak station no more than a half-day’s drive away. Let your vacation begin before the cruise; take Amtrak to your cruise port and arrive refreshed, relaxed and ready for another adventure.

Hi Imelda, Thank you for your question. I always follow the rule to arrive one day prior to my cruise departure day. There is only one daily train that runs between Los Angeles and Emeryville, CA (the closest station to San Francisco). It departs at 9:51am and arrives into Emeryville at 9:31pm, almost 12 hours. You definitely will need to arrive the day before your ship departure, there’s no option. There are hotels in Emeryville near the Amtrak station and the next day, it’s a short ride over to the cruise port. Have a wonderful cruise to Alaska!

Departing los angeles by train to San Francisco port to cruise to Alaska. What time shall I board the train in los Angeles to make the cruise departure on time.

Hi Lacey, Thank you for reading the article. I would contact Amtrak and make sure that they still have a dedicated motor coach to the cruise port in San Pedro. I have an article on it here: https://cruisemaven.com/how-to-get-to-los-angeles-amtrak-union-station-from-san-pedro-cruise-port/

If not, you next best bet is Uber or Lyft. It’s no short distance so those would be the least expensive. If Amtrak still provides their motor coach, I’d definitely go with that option. If the Amtrak reservation agent is clueless, hang up and call back. You will need to make a reservation for the bus.

I’d be happier if you were arriving the day before the cruise. Freight trains have been clogging up the right-of-way for Amtrak now more than I can remember. There are a few hotels very near the train station, too.

I hope my information is helpful. Have a wonderful train ride and cruise! Thank you again for reading my article and taking the time to send your question.

In Feb, we are taking Amtrak to Los Angeles, union station, arrival 8am and catching a cruise at San Pedro at 4pm. What is the best way to get there?

Hi Lisa, Thank you so much for your kind words! Yes…you can take Amtrak to just about every cruise port. You can even take Amtrak up to Vancouver, BC to board an Alaska cruise from there, too. It’s a very interesting experience crossing the border on the train.

Enjoy your Alaska cruise! I’m going to revive my Cruise Maven Travel podcast so I hope you’ll tune it to that, too! Thank you again for reading my article and taking the time for your comment. Much appreciated! Sherry

Sherry, you are the absolute BEST! I have always wanted to do an Alaskan cruise out of Seattle but flying is out of the question for me. Now you’ve opened up a whole world of possibilities for my retirement! P.S. I enjoy listening to you on the Cruise Radio podcast. Keep living the dream!

Hi Sandra, Thank you for reading the article. The best you can find would be any train from DC to Baltimore Penn Station. From there, you can take a taxi/Uber/Lyft to the Port of Baltimore. There are more than a dozen trains between the two stations; regional, Acela and regular Amtrak passenger trains between NYC and Carolinas/Florida. Have a terrific cruise and I hope this information is helpful.

Hi. Is there an Amtrak train from Washington DC to Baltimore Port ?

Hi Carol, Good question. The last time I took the train to Boston for a cruise, I had to take an Uber from the Boston Amtrak Station to the Boston Cruise Port. The cost was about $11.00 plus tip. Thank you for taking the time to write. I hope my answer is helpful. Sherry

Is there a shuttle or does Amtrak take you the the port in Boston, MA

Hi Jennifer, Sorry for the delayed reply. I hope it’s not to late for my advice. Yes, arriving the day of departure can be pretty stressful. You’re counting on the train running exactly on time AND the Beachline road to not have delays. Considering cutoff time for embarkation is probably 3pm at the latest, it’s risky. It can be much more relaxing to arrive into Orlando (I’d suggest the Winter Park station instead), take or rent a car and spend a day in Cocoa Beach. Then return the car and go at your leisure to the port the next day. I hope this is helpful. Have a great train ride and a fabulous cruise! Sherry

Thanks so much for this informative piece. I’ve seen folks recommend getting there a day ahead. We’re planning on taking the train from Boston to Orlando to arrive at 10:30ish in the morning. The boat departs at 4PM. Is this pushing it too close?

Hi Jan, Your frustration was my inspiration to do the article! Thank you! And have a wonderful cruise. Sherry

You are right. I dug and got frustrated. Thanks for all or your hard work on the how to article.. Appreciate it. Jan

Hi Jan, Thank you for your question. It prompted me to do another “how-to” article! Here’s your answer: https://cruisemaven.com/how-to-get-to-cape-liberty-cruise-port-amtrak/ Have a wonderful cruise and thanks again for your comment.

Hi Sherry, How do you get from the station to Cape Liberty cruise port? Coming in from Pittsburgh. I know it’s best to come the day before? Any places to stay close to port? Thanks. Jan

Hi Anne, It’s very easy when you take the train into Penn Station. You didn’t mention if you were cruising from the Manhattan Cruise Terminal or out of Brooklyn at Red Hook…or even Bayonne, NJ which sometimes is confused with a NY departure. I’ll go with Manhattan for you. There isn’t any shuttle that runs back and forth to Penn Station. However, it’s only a short distance and you’ll need either a taxi or an Uber. If you choose a taxi, here’s where to find it at the station. Once you leave the train, take the escalator to the main level. It should put you directly in front of the Acela Lounge. As you step off the escalator, the Acela Lounge is right behind you. The escalator to the outside is right next to the Acela Lounge. Look for 31st Street and 8th Ave. Once outside, you’re facing exactly the corner of the two streets. veer to your right and that’s 8th. Walk 1/2 block to your right and you will see the taxi queue. Get into the taxi and close the door and then tell the driver you’re going to the Manhattan Cruise Terminal (assuming you’re not going to Brooklyn which is about a $60 ride. If you decide to call Uber, I’m not sure where it will collect you…probably on 8th near the taxi queue.

But that’s it! Taxi or Uber to Manhattan Cruise Terminal. Have a wonderful train ride and cruise! I hope you didn’t mind all this detailed instructions. Thank you for your question! Sherry

Hi Sherry We are thinking about taking a train from Greensboro, NC to New York. Do you know of any shuttle or any other transportation to get us to cruise port in New York?

Hi Ken, Thanks for reading the article. Amtrak doesn’t furnish designated shuttles between the station and the port. It’s only about 12 miles away. Your best bet would either be Uber or a taxi. One of several taxis is (904) 355-8294. The cost should be around $30-ish.

You can also visit: http://www.visitjacksonville.com/meetings/transportation/ground-transportation/ and look through available options. I don’t know how many people are traveling with you so at the VisitJacksonville site, it also lists shuttle vans services for larger parties.

I hope this helps. If you booked your cruise and rail with a travel agent, she/he can also help even further with connecting transportation. Have a wonderful trip and happy travels! Sherry

Hi Sherry, We are taking a train from Raleigh North Carolina to Jacksonville Florida. Do you know of any shuttle or other services to get us from the train terminal to the cruise port in Jacksonville. Thanks

Hi and thanks for your question. Amtrak doesn’t provide a shuttle service. But you can find shuttle services online. I can’t recommend any particular service, but a quick check and I see there’s a company PortCanaveralVanService.com that has Orlando Amtrak pickup for the port. Also, there’s Cocoa Beach Shuttle. Just google something like: port canaveral shuttle service orlando amtrak – and you’ll get a whole list of companies. It’s a little over an hour drive to or from the Amtrak station to Port Canaveral.

Definitely reserve your return port-to-Amtrak shuttle early, too.

Have a wonderful cruise! Sherry

Also, we will return to the Port on New Years Eve and need a shuttle back to Orlando Train Station Thank you

Hi taking an Amtrak train from Newark Penn Station in Newark, NJ to Orlando train station . We need to get to the cruise port in Orlando Florida and there are 12 of us traveling on Christmas Eve. Does Amtrak offer a shuttle from the train station to the cruise port? If so, how much is the fare? Thank you.

Hi and thank you for your email. It sounds like a great adventure! There’s good and bad news. The good news is that next week a group of Amtrak officials and regional big-wigs are riding a test train from New Orleans to Jacksonville to decide if Amtrak will once again have a transcontinental route rom Los Angeles to Jacksonville. The bad news is that if the Sunset Ltd. resumes full cross-country service, it probably won’t be in time for your high school reunion.

That said, the easiest route would be Los Angeles to Chicago. Then onto Washington DC and south to Jacksonville. You’d need to rent a car in Jacksonville for the short drive to St. Augustine. You’re looking at two nights to Chicago on the Southwest Chief, one night to Washington on the Capital Ltd and one night to Jacksonville on the Silver Meteor. Three trains. A great adventure, for sure. If you decide to take the train, call Amtrak, unless you know of a travel agent that is good at booking Amtrak. If you should call to book it yourself and the reservationist doesn’t seem as knowledgeable as you’d like, politely hang up and call back. I find that, as with many customer service call centers, some people seem to know their “stuff” better than others. When you decide on your train and accommodations, for the DC to Florida train, ask that your room isn’t directly over the wheels. The other two trains are Superliners and you can request an upstairs room if you’d like.

Thank you for your email. Have a wonderful trip and please do let me know if you take the trains across country! I’d love to hear your story.

Hi Jennifer,

Good idea to take the train to Penn Station for your cruise (I’m going to assume you are leaving from the Manhattan Cruise Terminal and not Brooklyn Red Hook). You are right…since this is more of a “commuter” train than long distance, there isn’t checked luggage. I have taken a short distance train (Orlando to Charleston) and stayed in coach with my suitcase. But it was only for a long weekend not a cruise. If you think you can stow your bags in the overhead ledge, then you’re good. My main concern is time. In a perfect world, I’d suggest coming in the day before your cruise, enjoy the city and then in the morning, you’re there. Even though it’s a short train ride, if your cruise is in winter, the weather can cause delays for Amtrak. Please carefully plan your arrival into NYC. Of course, if you have travel protection insurance, then you’re covered in case of delays or missed connections. Thank you again for your email and have a wonderful train ride and cruise.

Hi, we’re planning(2 seniors) to go to St. Augustine, Florida from LAX Union Station in October for a high school reunion. What are our best opinions to go by Amtrak. And how long would it take us. Our big day is on October 16, 2016…. Your advice is much appreciated. Thank you.

We are thinking about taking the Amtrak Keystone Service from Harrisburg to New York for our upcoming cruise. While it’s only a 3.5 hour drive, we want the comfort to relax. I just realized that it does not allow checked baggage. Have you ever been in this situation? It is 4 of us traveling, 2 adults and 2 kids. We could cut down on what we pack (always somehow over pack), but with kids I have to make sure we have lots of extra stuff.

Hi, I just now saw your question…sorry for the delay. From Port Angeles, it’s a 3-hour motor coach ride from Port Angeles (6am) to Seattle (9:10am). From there, they can pick up the Coast Starlight, for one of the most beautiful stretches of coastline in the world. It’s a dedicated Amtrak motorcoach so it only stops for ticketed Amtrak passengers. The best advice would be to contact Amtrak directly (1.800.USA.RAIL) and ask the reservation agent. Surely it’s do-able…it just might take a little bit of planning. But the ride along the coast is awesome.

Thanks Ryan. It’s been corrected.

The California Zephyr does not go to Los Angeles. It runs between Chicago and the San Francisco Bay Area.

My daughter and SIL live in Port Angeles, Washington. I want them to visit me in Ontario, Calif. I do know that it is possible to catch the train in Los Angeles to Ontario, but where is the nearest place that they can catch the train from Wash. to Los Angeles?

Hi Don, Thanks for going in to a little more detail about LA Union Station and reaching Long Beach and San Pedro. San Diego would be a great choice, too.

Wanted to mention San Diego because more ships are using it as an embarkation point.

Amtrak has 12 trains a day from LA Union Station to San Diego, where trains arrive convenient to all the downtown hotels and the harbor.

So sorry you spent that $100. Amtrak offers connecting bus service from LA Union Station to Long Beach (where most hotels are) and San Pedro, which must be booked in conjunction with your rail reservation (by California law).

Because this service does not meet every train, you may have to wait awhile. However, Union Station has a Metropolitan Lounge for Amtrak sleeping car passengers, where you can relax.

Although I haven’t stored luggage at this location, the Metro Lounge in Chicago routinely does so.

If true in LA, that gives you a chance to hop on the Red Line subway from within Union Station to its Hollywood and Vine stop. There within the same block, you’ll find the Kodak Theatre (the current Academy Awards venue), the famed Chinese Theatre (the former Academy Awards venue), and the historic Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel, where Marilyn Monroe lived. This hotel’s fun to explore.

To add to Richard’s comment: In March we took a fantastic train trip around the U.S., more than 8200 miles and loved it. My wife had the brilliant idea to break up that trip with a short cruise from LA, giving us a very welcome change in food and scenery. Our biggest problem was the connection between Amtrak and the port of San Pedro. Cabs were $100+ each way, and we didn’t find many other options. We used the local subway, taking the red line to the blue line, out to San Pedro, and a cab from there to the port, $20 or so. But it was a bit of an adventure, and a tough job to lug our suitcases along. We had a wonderful subway journey, getting into a discussion of our trip with some wonderful locals, but many people might find the task daunting. I highly recommend the journey, but realize that the connection is either difficult or costly.

Hi Richard, Thanks for writing. I did the train trip into Union Station twice in 2013 for a Princess cruise. Since I always arrive the day before the cruise, I took a shared shuttle for $17 from Union Station to the Marriott Airport Hotel. The next morning, because this hotel was one of the hotels that Princess Cruises used for their pre/post cruise stay, I bought a transfer to the San Pedro port through the cruise line. Also, PrimeTimeShuttle.com provides direct service between Union Station and both San Pedro and Long Beach ports for a flat fee. As you said, taking a private taxi can be expensive. Thank you for your comment.

Los Angeles ports: traveling from Los Angeles union station to the ports of Los Angeles will not be an easy breeze. The taxi will cost you another $100 (including tip) plus the horrible traffic and 2 hour travel. Taking another train from union station to the ports will be difficult, another long trip, change carriage, the need to take taxi to the nearest ports as there are no direct trains drop off. 🙁

10 Best Miami Cruise Hotels for Passengers (Close to Port)

When it comes to cruising, no place is more iconic than sailing from Miami, the cruise capital of the world. But the city isn’t just a place to get on the ship. It’s one of the most famous, lively, and exciting cities in the world. If you aren’t staying a night before your cruise, then you’re doing yourself a disservice.

parking at port everglades cruise port

Of course, not only is Miami a great place to experience, but staying in town the night before your cruise is a smart move. Between airport delays and the stress of driving in on the day of your cruise, arriving the day before ensures that you don’t miss your ship.

With that mind, you have literally hundreds of hotel options within a short distance of the cruise port. To narrow things down, we’ve filtered through Miami hotels to find those that are highly ranked and also near the cruise port. That makes for a nice stay and makes it easy to get to the ship on cruise day.

Top-Ranked Miami Hotels Near the Cruise Port

Cruise hotel in Miami

Hampton Inn Coconut Grove When it comes to name-brand hotels, it’s hard to beat Hampton Inn, which seemingly always gets strong reviews. This location is no different, earning a solid 4.5 stars out of 5. From here, you’re about 15 minutes from the port, putting you close, but outside of the activity and hustle of the downtown area. It also features amenities like free wi-fi, outdoor pool, and included breakfast. If driving in, you should note that parking is $22 per night.

  • Distance to port: 6 miles
  • Rating: 4.5 out of 5

Hampton Inn & Suites Miami/Brickell-Downtown Do you like Hampton Inn, but wish you were closer to the port? This hotel fits the bill perfectly. It’s located in Brickell, which is just south of downtown and only a few miles from the ships. The hotel is clean and modern, with stellar reviews. You will pay a bit more for the location, putting you within a short distance of restaurants and coffee shops. You’ll also be within a short walk of the Coral Way Trolley, which offers a free ride to the cruise port . You can also use the hotel’s shuttle to the ships (fee applies) on cruise day.

  • Distance to port: 3 miles
  • Phone: 305-377-9400

Homewood Suites Miami Downtown Need a little more space, such as when traveling with a family? This is one of the best options near the Miami port as it offers suites that give everyone a little more elbow room. From here, you’re close to the port but also food, shopping, and Miami’s nightlife. Still, it’s just outside of Brickell/downtown. Amenities including wi-fi and a pool are available. There is also a paid shuttle to the ships, making it ideal for cruise passengers.

  • Rating: 4 out of 5
  • Phone: 305-285-7112

Hilton Miami Downtown If you want a top hotel that’s close to the cruise port, this is nearly as close as you can get. The hotel is located just about 2 miles from the ships by car, but less than a mile as the crow flies. Meanwhile, it’s just one block back from the waterfront. At this location, you’ll have sweeping views of the port and downtown Miami, pool access, an on-site restaurant, and more. You’re also within walking distance of the Frost Science Center, the basketball arena, and Bayfront Park.

  • Distance to port: 2 miles
  • Phone: 305-374-0000

Novatel Miami-Brickell Fancy a rooftop pool, close to the cruise terminal, and highly rated? Novatel Miami-Brickell checks all those boxes. We like that it’s slightly south of downtown/Brickell, giving you a great location that’s also just a bit quieter (for reference, the Four Seasons is just about a block or two away). The hotel is stylish and sophisticated, with a very “Miami” pastel pink theme throughout public areas. Rooms are modern with some great views of downtown and the surrounding area.

  • Phone: 786-600-2600

YVE Hotel The absolute closest hotel on our list is one that’s technically close enough that you could walk from the hotel to your ship. (Given the area is not very pedestrian friendly to the port, walking is possible, but likely not the best idea.) The hotel describes itself as “Bohemian, Eclectic, and Stylish” — we’d say it’s just classic Miami with fun, cool colors and modern style. When it’s time to get to the ship, you can walk across the street to the Coral Way Trolley to get across the causeway to the cruise terminals.

  • Distance to port: 1.5 miles
  • Phone: 305-358-4555

Hyatt Regency Miami A higher-end hotel, the Hyatt Regency in downtown is right on the Miami River and only about two miles from the ships. There’s a lot to do right nearby, including being within walking distance of Bayfront Park, tons of restaurants, and the MetroMover, which can take you practically anywhere in downtown Miami. In short, if you want a large hotel with a brand name you know and trust, this might be the perfect fit.

  • Phone: 305-358-1234

Eurostars Langford This hotel is one of the more unique in Miami, sitting inside the former Miami National Bank building (constructed in 1925) in downtown. Today it’s a cool mix of historic feel but modern style, including the herringbone pattern flooring in rooms. If traditional, bland hotels aren’t your thing, then this is the hotel to look into. Maybe that’s why it’s one of the highest-ranking cruise hotels in Miami. As well, it’s close to the cruise port meaning you can have a stylish stay but also be convenient to the terminal.

  • Phone: 305-420-2200

Hotel Indigo Hotel Indigo is a nationwide chain of boutique hotels, numbering about 150 across the United States. They are known for being more unique and styled — more like part of the community than a traditional cookie-cutter location. This edition is located in Brickell, about three miles from the port and in an upscale area. You get all the Miami atmosphere you could want, including a pool, lush green outdoor patio, and in the heart of the bustling downtown region. When it’s time to go to the ship, you’re close to the Coral Way Trolley (which takes you to the port area for free) or you can grab an Uber.

  • Phone: 305-860-3874

Aloft Miami Brickell Sitting back-to-back with Hotel Indigo is another Miami cruise port hotel that gets high marks: Aloft Miami Brickell. Best of all, this spot near the port can be relatively cheap. We found rates as low as $125 a night despite it being only blocks from high-end names like Mandarin Oriental. From here you can walk to a number of hotspots like the Brickell City Center (a shopping area with stores, restaurants, entertainment and more). So you can have a night on the town before starting the cruise portion of your vacation.

Port Canaveral officials announced a new seventh cruise terminal and...

“The need now for our cruise partners is immediate,” said port CEO Capt. John Murray. “We have a point now where we’re starting to turn business away from Port Canaveral.”

The port had initially targeted construction of a seventh terminal on the south side of the port after moving several marina businesses. This new plan will convert North Cargo Berth 8 opposite Cruise Terminal 5 on the north side of the port.

Port Canaveral officials announced a new seventh cruise terminal and parking garage will be built on the north side of the port in the west turn basin opposite Cruise Terminal 5 targeting completion in summer 2026. (Courtesy/Port Canaveral)

Murray said the original plan turned out to be “a five- to six-year project to do it correctly.”

Working with the existing cargo terminal allows for a quick construction turnaround. It’s already deep enough to handle any cruise ship, even what will become the world’s largest cruise ship, Royal Caribbean’s Star of the Seas, set to call Port Canaveral home when it debuts.

“It will be a state-of-the-art terminal, will use all the latest technologies, that will handle the largest ships in the world, and it will be a multiuser facility,” Murray said. “In other words, we, Port Canaveral, will run the terminal and it won’t be cruise-line specific — so multiple brands, a big-ship terminal, gives us the flexibility to put the largest ships in there and the smaller ones at some of our older facilities that can’t handle the largest ships.”

Building what is expected to be about a 2,500-space garage and other terminal support buildings also is going to be faster because the space is already what is known as “greenfield,” meaning ready for any kind of development.

Right now, the cargo berth is basically a parking wharf, sometimes used by SpaceX recovery ships for docking, but most of the space industry will focus on the other cargo terminals farther to the east in the port, Murray said.

Port Canaveral plots timeline to take over marina for new cruise terminal

Murray said the south side plans are still something the port wants to pursue, but the cruise terminal needs by shifting to the north will alleviate the demand for now.

An eighth terminal could come online after 2030, he said, but it also allows the port to focus attention on its commercial fishing industry and reorganize the district in the coming years. So the existing announcement that the port was not going to renew the lease of Cape Marina, which it deems an underutilized space, is still going forward.

The cruise industry is its main revenue source, generating the bulk of more than $187 million projected for this fiscal year. The port had 16 cruise ships calling it home either year-round or seasonally over the last year, and expects that to grow to 19 in the next fiscal year.

A new terminal could realistically add another three, Murray said, and that would continue to grow the port’s burgeoning business that expects to see more than 7 million passenger movements this year, and continue its already record revenue totals.

Port Canaveral chalks up record month amid growing cruise demand

Next year will also see the port’s first homeported ships from Princess Cruises and Celebrity Cruises on top of the fleets already from Disney, Carnival, Royal Caribbean, Norwegian and MSC Cruises.

Murray said tinquiries for new ships are running into full slates not only at Port Canaveral, but also Port Everglades and Miami, while also pointing out that Tampa and Jacksonville are limited in what size ships they can take on.

“So there’s only three ports really that can take these ships in Florida and if we can’t take them, they’re going to go into another state. So it’s really important that we find a way to take that business and keep that economic impact in Florida,” he said.

The More I Park there for Cruises, the more I love it! 8th time Parking there. Easy to access to the web site Call for discounts-I use my Veteran's/Military one. The area is secure, monitored 24 hrs and is gated. All the employees are respectful, helpful& make you feel safe to leave your vehicle there! Never disappointed, getting off the ship, just walk to section 4/5 for off site parking. Both ways, the driver loads your luggage. I live in a 55+ Park in Fla& now my neighbors are hooked on Port Parking Space. Shuttles are frequent, never over crowded & located with a short ride to the Port. I am a "picky retired RN& picky when I travel & this company does not let you down! I promise you will not be disappointed. Thanks fellas for another wonderful experience-See you in March!!~

Second time I have parked there. Seamless entry,is gated, security is in place. I used a Military discount(15%) off & showed my VA card when I pulled in. e unloaded the luggage which I stayed with while my travel companion parked the car. They loaded our luggage on to the shuttle.A quick trip across the street to the Port & we were off. Given a card for the return trip from the Port. Got our luggage off the shuttle & where we parked was slow close,we wheeled it to the car. They were professional, efficient & we waited no more than 5" in either direction. Very close to the Port: 8945 Columbia Road Cape Canaveral,Fl 32922/(321-353-8353). Their [email protected] Once again,a great experience, recommend this parking company without hesitation.

It's cheap but you get what you pay for. They promote that they have multiple EV chargers but the 17 year olds that are in charge of checking people in don't seem to provide any direction or enforcement so they were all full with non-EVs. You have to take a shuttle so it is less convenient than parking at the terminal garage and adds 20-30 minutes to getting off the ship and on the road. Might be a good fit if you're looking to save money but if you value your time, just park at the terminal.

Photo of Mike F.

Easy in and out access, friendly and efficient staff, very helpful. We had a situation where one of our party left a bag at the terminal. They brought him back and picked him up and drove him back after he retrieved the bag at no extra charge. We will definitely use them again and recommend them to anyone we know that is sailing out of Port Canaveral!

Photo of michelle l.

Great experience! We live in Tampa and drove to Port Canaveral for a one week cruise. The onsite port parking doesn't have EV chargers, but Port Parking Space does! The location is pretty close to the pier, and we saw shuttles going between the two with great frequency. My husband said his experience parking was excellent. He was immediately directed to an EV charging space, they had the reservation on file, there was a shuttle ready to whisk him to our cruise. The whole process was seamless. When we arrived back in port, there were several shuttles waiting to bring passengers back to the parking lot, and since we had prepaid, we just drove on out and back home! I'd happily use Port Parking Space again.

We just took a cruise with Carnival and parked with Port Parking Space for the first time and would like to say the service here was par excellence. Both the ground crew and the drivers were very professional and friendly.

Photo of Mike S.

What a great experience! They are very efficient and friendly. Had us on a shuttle for the quick ride to the ship in no time. They have you take a picture of the instructions and map, brilliant. Highly recommend!

I highly recommend this place ...the people here are so friendly... You don't have to really wait for a shuttle ...they take you back-and-forth to the port really fast.

Photo of Shelly Z.

We had a great experience parking here! Super efficient. The staff was friendly and shuttles were prompt! It's close to the port so we even debated walking. Would definitely park here again!

Photo of Mike N.

We arrived at the Port parking Space which is easy to find in Port Canaveral. We cruised on Royal Caribbean's Independence of the Seas. The parking attendants were prompt and courteous. There is minimal wait time as they have many shuttles and drivers. Aside from the parking ramp next door to Cruise terminal 1, this is the closest parking available. It's only a couple minutes. At the end of the cruise, the driver was there waiting and we were off in only a few minutes. I would repeat in a heartbeat!

Photo of David F.

I had a perfect experience. It was raining cats and dogs, so I really appreciated their covered walkway and paved lot. I have used several cruise parking services, and this rings up as the best. Will be using them in the future.
