Cruising is back — and you might even say it's better than ever. "Vacations at sea are suddenly one of the biggest things in travel," Travel + Leisure cruise expert Paul Brady reported recently, as summer air travel is looking progressively messier but the cruise industry continues to stabilize post-pandemic. For those looking to plan a cruise, whether it's a last-minute trip for the summer or a 2024 around-the-world cruise, we've narrowed down the best luxury cruise lines to ferry you to some of the world's most mesmerizing destinations in comfort. Here, our favorite luxury cruise lines in the world.

Regent Seven Seas Cruises

When this luxury cruise line says it's all-inclusive, it's not overstating. Everything from shore excursions, Wi-Fi, and laundry to gratuities, top-shelf liquor, and business-class international flights are included with Regent Seven Seas Cruises ' fares. While each luxurious suite features ocean views, nothing beats the view from the epic 4,000-square-foot, two-bedroom Regent Suite, which has two wraparound balconies, three walk-in closets, two Picasso lithographs, and a grand piano.

For the best in-suite views, book a room at the back of the ship, Kelly Cochrane, executive chef of Regent Seven Seas Cruises tells T+L.

Oceania Cruises

Oceania Cruises has just seven ships, but the debut of the brand-new Oceania Vista catapults this cruise line into the luxury division. The cruise line's relatively new Go Local shore excursions for small groups bring travelers to under-the-radar destinations, T+L contributing editor and long-time cruiser Sarah Greaves-Gabbadon reported recently. Her 2022 cruise on Riviera included 70 excursions "from canoeing Croatia’s Cetina River to cooking classes in Athens."

If you've ever dreamed of having your own butler, Silversea is the luxury cruise line for you. In fact, Silversea's butlers take white-glove service to a whole new level — they'll handle your laundry with more care than you do, scour port towns to find your favorite tastes of home, and even help you pack and unpack your suitcase. Further, Silversea's new culinary program, nicknamed S.A.L.T. (for Sea and Land Taste), brings the taste of destinations on board through cooking classes. Of course, there's no need to cook for yourself aboard a Silversea ship, as each one features several restaurants with multi-course menus to whet your appetite every night.

Viking Cruises

Viking Cruises is a river and ocean cruise line that recently added expedition sailings and the Great Lakes trips to its repertoire. "T+L readers rave about the consistency of Viking's vessels and their Scandinavian design," cruise expert Fran Golden reported when Viking once again topped T+L's World's Best Awards last year. Viking came in at No. 1 in T+L's best mid-size ship category and river cruise category. Golden said the WBA Hall of Fame honoree's 50 river "longships" are "light-filled floating boutique hotels."

Laureen Robert / Courtesy of Ponant

French luxury cruise line Ponant aims to make passengers feel as if they're traveling on their own private yachts. Guests enjoy Ladurée macarons, Veuve Clicquot Champagne, and luxurious Hermès bath products on board. Each of the company's ships features an onboard spa with massage cabins and either a Turkish bath or sauna. Ponant's luxurious small ships sail to remote destinations like Antarctica, incorporating once-in-a-lifetime experiences such as eclipse spotting from the edge of the earth. The company also partners with Smithsonian and Disney on certain sailings.

Seabourn cruises to all seven continents, and most recently launched Seabourn Venture , "marking the first time the Carnival Corporation–owned luxury cruise line will offer adventurous sailings on an expedition ship built for extreme environments," Brady reported. (The sibling ship to Venture , Seabourn Pursuit arrives later this year.) The World's Best Award-winning cruise line has all-suite ships and "is known for its onboard service and over-the-top food including complimentary caviar and Thomas Keller steakhouses on ships such as the  Seabourn Ovation, " Brady said.

Windstar Cruises

Windstar Cruises ' luxury small ships call on 150 ports throughout Europe, Central America, the Caribbean, and the South Pacific, and there's no way you'll go hungry on the journey. Exquisite onboard menus have been designed by acclaimed chefs from Michelin-starred restaurants. (You'll have to pay extra for alcohol, but all meals and a Windstar signature onboard barbecue — a feast of whole suckling pig, shrimp brochette, and more — are included.) The cruise line is not only a T+L World's Best Awards Hall of Fame honoree, it has a "long-standing partnership with the James Beard Foundation ," Brady reported, and regularly brings chefs on board for culinary-focused sailings. Yes, chef.

Courtesy of Scenic Luxury Cruises & Tours

Whether it's a river or an ocean you want to cruise, Scenic can take you there in style. The luxury cruise line operates river cruises in Europe and Asia, while ocean cruises on Scenic Eclipse (and the forthcoming Scenic Eclipse II ) can take guests to Antarctica, the Arctic, Australia, South America, and Greenland, among other coveted destinations. On board, you'll find fine dining, expansive spas and fitness facilities, and butler service.

Cunard Line

Jonathan Atkin / Courtesy of Cunard Line

This British luxury cruise line is known for its transatlantic service, which also transports pets between its headquarters in Southampton, England, and New York City. Cunard operates three ships with a fourth in the works, though only the Queen Mary 2 sails the transatlantic route. It's a cruise line that takes formality seriously; white-gloved waiters serve afternoon tea each day at 3:30 p.m. State rooms include 24-hour room service and evening turndown service with chocolates. Don't forget your tux, the gala nights are black tie.

Paul Gauguin Cruises

Roger Paperno / Courtesy of Paul Gauguin Cruises

Paul Gauguin Cruises operates just one ship, but it is exquisite, hosting 330 guests and sailing only in the South Pacific to destinations like Tahiti, Fiji, Tonga, and the Cook Islands. The ship is small enough to access private ports at remote beaches and take travelers well off the beaten path. Named the best small-ship ocean cruise line in T+L's 2022 World's Best Awards, Golden said the line is known for Tahitian-inspired massage techniques in the onboard spa and noted that cruisers particularly love the wonderful staff.

Celebrity Cruises

Steve Dunlop / Courtesy of Celebrity Cruises

Celebrity Cruises ' new Edge Series ships are taking things up a notch. Celebrity's signature Iconic Suites on board the Celebrity Edge and Apex offer panoramic views from above the ship's bridge; each suite boasts more than 2,500 square feet of space, including expansive 690-square-foot terraces, and comes with two bedrooms and two bathrooms. Celebrity Beyond , which debuted in 2022, accommodates 3,260 guests has 32 bars and restaurants, like Le Voyage by chef Daniel Boulud, and two-story villas on board. Beyond 's sibling ship, Ascent , will be delivered later this year.

1. Oceania Cruises

You’ll enjoy some of the best food at sea on this line. The latest addition to the fleet, the 1,200-passenger Oceania Vista, launched in 2023. It became the seventh ship in the fleet and the first of two new Allura-class vessels, with the second scheduled for delivery in 2025. Created to reflect the glamorousbelle époque era of Paris, the Grand Dining Room, with a ceiling that’s almost two decks high, is a standout feature on Vista. There’s also a dedicated cabin category for solo travellers. Suggestions from officers and crew members helped shape Oceania Vista, so you can expect a ship that is full of practical and aesthetic touches.

Oceania cruises feature excellent food, such as this scallop dish

2. Silversea

Italian flair is part of Silversea’s appeal, with acres of marble and cool design touches adorning its fleet of elegant ships. In 2023, the line launched Silver Nova, with accommodation for up to 728 guests that includes aft suites with 270-degree views; a sister ship, Silver Ray, is due to sail in summer 2024. Silversea service is highly personal, with a butler for every suite, and there’s a wide choice of fine-dining restaurants. These include SALT (Sea and Land Taste) Kitchen, showcasing regional cuisine from the destinations visited. Fares include all dining (except La Dame, which offers the finest French cuisine), a wide range of spirits and fine wines, crew tips, most gym classes and excursions in every port. Many cruises include flights and transfers too. On expedition cruises, all activities are included.

The Grill on Silver Explorer

There’s new cruising royalty on the horizon with the 3,000-passenger Queen Anne. Setting sail in 2024, the latest flagship is the line’s first new vessel in 12 years and will combine Cunard’s trademark art deco heritage with modern design details. The top suites on Cunard’s current trio of elegant Queens (Mary 2, Victoria and Elizabeth), are graded either Princess Grill or Queens Grill, and represent some of the most prestigious accommodation at sea — particularly the duplex suites that resemble smart private apartments. Each Grill class has its own fine-dining restaurant and Grill passengers have a private cocktail lounge. You’ll enjoy all the features of a big ship too, from top-notch guest speakers to grand theatrical productions and glittering black-tie balls.

Azamara’s four mid-sized luxury ships — most recently joined by Azamara Onward, which shares the same DNA as its fleetmates — offer affordable, destination-focused cruising with plenty of flair. Glamorous White Nights deck parties receive rave reviews, while every cruise includes an AzAmazing evening, a spectacular cultural event ashore. Itineraries focus on late departures, or overnights in port. You’ll be spoiled with its choice of restaurants, including a grill, Prime C, and a romantic Italian, Aqualina. Included are crew tips, most drinks and all dining apart from the two speciality restaurants. Suite guests get extra perks, including speciality dining. And, while most fares include flights and transfers, you’ll pay extra for shore excursions, premium drinks and, unless you’re in one of the top cabins, wi-fi.

5. Seabourn

A fleet of contemporary small ships offering intuitive, all-inclusive service, sumptuous all-suite accommodation and superb dining. Seabourn offers un-stuffy luxury with a vibe that’s more superyacht than luxury cruise ship. The line has some impressive partnerships, not least with the renowned chef Thomas Keller, Sir Tim Rice and the wellness guru Dr Andrew Weil. All dining, including speciality restaurants, crew tips and a comprehensive menu of cocktails and fine wines is included. Some voyages include flights too. You’ll pay extra for premium wines, wi-fi, access to the Retreat (an exclusive alfresco lounge on the top deck) and shore excursions.

6. Uniworld

Specialists in river cruising, Uniworld has cornered the market for extravagant ships that are inspired by their itineraries — and they have vessels all over the world, covering Europe, Asia, Africa and South America. SS La Venezia, for example, decked out in Murano glass and decadent Venetian detailing, sails only northern Italy, including Venice and its islands. On board, everything is included, including a curated selection of excursions. If you want to do your own thing, there are walking sticks and bicycles you can borrow.

7. SeaDream Yacht Club

The service is what sings on this tiny boutique cruise line, which operates just two 112-passenger megayachts that in 2022 underwent bow-to-stern revamps totalling nearly £10 million. All staterooms on SeaDream I and SeaDream II have been completely refurbished, and there are gleaming new teak decks mirroring the centuries-old yachting tradition. Attentive crew cater to guests’ every whim, while the food is exceptional, not least the imaginative vegetarian and vegan dishes. Life onboard is relaxed and informal, with the dress code best described as chic. Every voyage includes a decadent Champagne & Caviar Splash party, either around the pool or in the surf, with free-flowing bubbles. You can swim off the ship too and, for a touch of romance, sleep on deck under a duvet and a canopy of stars. Dining, crew tips and drinks apart from premium wines are included in the price.

Viking’s nine near-identical, adult-only ships carry 930 passengers and embody Scandi chic with their stylish, soothing interiors, gorgeous light-filled lounges and spacious cabins, every one of which has a private veranda. Highlights include an infinity pool on the aft deck, a superb spa with free access to the hydro pool, saunas and steam rooms, and the Wintergarden — a sunlit space with a retractable roof for warm days. Torshavn, an intimate little nightclub, is as fun as any jazz club you’ll find ashore. The package includes all dining, drinks with meals, wi-fi, crew tips, flights and transfers, and an excursion in every port. Bar drinks and optional excursions cost extra.

Viking’s Viking Star

9. Regent Seven Seas Cruises

Regent’s classy ships have touches reminiscent of grand hotels, with elegant cocktail lounges and imaginatively designed restaurants. The suites on the two newest ships, Seven Seas Explorer and Seven Seas Splendor, are especially covetable, with opulent decor and butler service. Regent is arguably the world’s most luxurious — and most inclusive — of the luxury lines. All dining, most wines and spirits, crew tips, gym classes, wi-fi, excursions, flights and transfers, and even pre and post-cruise hotel stays are included. Spa treatments, premium drinks and some of the optional excursions are all you’ll pay extra for.

The Chartreuse Bar on Seven Seas Splendor

Megayacht Scenic Eclipse marked the first foray into the luxury ocean cruise scene for Australian-owned Scenic; the 228-guest sister vessel Scenic Eclipse II followed suit in spring of 2023. Every spacious suite has a balcony and you can expect upmarket interiors reminiscent of a contemporary boutique hotel. Standards don’t slip when it comes to gastronomy, where you can take your pick from Asian fusion, classic French and everything in between. Both ships are designed for polar expedition cruising, but also offer warm-water voyages. Whatever the climate, there’s plenty to keep guests entertained, be it e-bikes or stand-up paddleboarding, a helicopter flight or a dive in the submarine, which both cost extra. Practically everything is included: most drinks, all dining, crew tips, a stocked minibar, flights and transfers, excursions and activities.

Submarine dives are available to travellers with Scenic

11. Explora Journeys

Explora Journeys is the first luxury oceangoing brand from international shipping giant the MSC Group. Explora I, the first of six ships, debuted in 2023, and the rest will follow between 2024 and 2028. The sea-facing cabins — described as homes at sea — have balconies, walk-in wardrobes and heated bathroom floors. Entry level accommodation is larger than average and goes up to a huge Owner’s Residence, complete with a private terrace, hot tub and butler. Restaurants will feature cuisine from around the globe.

Explora 1

12. Swan Hellenic

One for culture hounds, British line Swan Hellenic has itineraries to many adventurous destinations on the cruise circuit, from the polar regions to countries in east Africa and the Indian Ocean. You get to really experience it all, too, as a shore excursion is included for every stop. Its small fleet of three ships has been designed with expeditions in mind, but none of them scrimps on comfort — expect saunas with spectacular views, lounges with cosy fireplaces and cabins furnished with boutique hotel aesthetics.

French-owned Ponant operates a fleet of stylish expedition ships, the smartest of which are arguably the six Ponant Explorers, with clever design features — most notably a multisensory underwater viewing lounge. Every cabin has a balcony and luxurious, tactile finishes in leather and suede. On board you’ll find luxury French brands such as Veuve Clicquot champagne and Hermès bath products, as well as classic French cuisine overseen by the chef Alain Ducasse. The latest addition to the fleet is the icebreaker Le Commandant Charcot, tailor-made for thrilling polar expeditions. Costs cover dining, most drinks, a stocked minibar, wi-fi, crew gratuities and — on expedition cruises — most activities. You’ll pay extra for excursions and, on some voyages, flights.

The cruise line industry has taken a major hit in the past year and a half, but it's back and better than ever with trips now selling out in hours, according to travel expert and master cruise counselor Linda Speer. For th0se who feel comfortable traveling via ship, cruising is a hassle-free choice for seeing the world these days, as cruise lines do the back end work to ensure you're prepared for the COVID-19 travel restrictions of each destination you're visiting, and they offer an array of unique excursion opportunities to make the most out of each stop.

"The industry's coming back, and when you look at what's going on after basically a year and a half with nothing sailing, you'll find the best deals are super close in and super far out because a lot of cancellations have been pushed into the next year," says Speer. "Because of that and as the majority of cruise lines bring their most aggressive pricing when they first load itineraries, it's important to think long-term. Come up with a five-year travel plan of what you want to see because some destinations have very specific times and seasons to get the best travel experience. If you make a list of places you want to go with how many trips you can take each year, a travel advisor can put it all into perspective to make sure you visit the right destinations at the right times."

Luxury Cruise Picks from Linda Speer of Cruises By Linda

"Their ships are actually decorated by the family members—not just the public areas but each individual cabin," says Speer. "They are so uniquely decorated and have more original art on those ships than you can imagine."

best cruise lines uniworld boutique cruise lines ss sphinx

Besides being vessels of Old World glamour and elegance, Uniworld Boutique River Cruises offer the utmost in service, amenities, and experiences with each itinerary, be it an eight-night excursion of Paris and Normandy or a 46-night trip across nine countries that spans rivers around the world. Other notable mentions include Uniworld's award-winning dedication to sustainable tourism, world-class cuisine that features fresh ingredients from the destinations you are visiting, and a fabulous beverage program that incorporates the best beers, wines, and spirits from the regions on your itinerary.

"There's also a new type of product that is just starting to show up, which is the luxury expedition liner, where you'll find smaller vessels that are extremely luxurious but strong enough to handle some really unusual itineraries you wouldn't normally see otherwise," says Speer. "There's a company called Windstar Cruises that is known for its small sailing ships and was recently purchased by Xanterra because of its national parks affiliation but it originally started as part of Harvey Hotels."

Under new ownership, each ship in the Windstar fleet has been revitalized and reduced to half-capacity with brand-new midship sections boasting grander dining areas, pool decks, and other amenities. Speer says she was just on one of these renovated ships in June and was "over-the-moon-pleased with the vessel."

best cruise lines windstar

"Everything they did to those ships is just wonderful and they offer some of the best values in small ship cruising," says Speer. "For those who want a shorter cruise, one of the most interesting offerings for affluent, working travelers is their Panama Canal cruises if you want a warm clime but not a traditional Caribbean trip."

Windstar accommodates anywhere from 148 to 352 passengers per trip and feels almost more like a yacht voyage than a commercial cruise liner. The brand is widely considered to be a top small ship cruise liner in the industry and offers one-of-a-kind experiences that those traveling on a mega-ship wouldn't be able to have. It makes a great choice for those who may be hesitant to cruise again and want to dip their toes back in the waters.

Picks from Kristin Carlson, Tahiti Tourisme's North American Managing Director

“Certainly one of the best ways to experience The Islands of Tahiti is by cruise ship, where during 7- to 14-day itineraries you can visit several of the most beautiful islands anywhere in the world," says Carlson. "The newly refurbished Paul Gauguin and Windstar’s all-suite Star Breeze are among a handful of cruise ships which make their home port in The Islands of Tahiti. The benefit of traveling by one of the local cruise lines, in addition to their knowledge and respect of the local culture, is that these intimate ships carry less than 350 passengers and can enter destinations such as Bora Bora, which are not accessible to larger vessels.”

best cruise lines paul gaugin cruises

Paul Gaugin Cruises deserves a spot on your luxury travel radar if you're dreaming of a South Pacific getaway. This highly lauded cruise line accommodates 330 guests on its eponymous ship where guests can experience this breath-taking region of the world with the help of local Tahitians who serve as the ship's hosts and hostesses, storytellers, and entertainers that provide an authentic look at Polynesian life alongside a vast array of spectacular amenities.

Picks from Joan Roca, Founder & CEO of The Essentialist

“One of our top choices for luxury cruise lines would be the The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection and although all of their itineraries are showstoppers, our favorite is the Northern Europe & Baltic journey for the breadth of ports and destinations it visits, taking passengers beyond the usual to places like the Faroe Islands," says Roca. "In addition to the spa, highlights for us include their selection of offshore activities and the multiple onboard restaurants."

best cruise lines ritzcarlton yacht collection

As frequenters of The Ritz-Carlton Hotels & Resorts may anticipate, the company's collection of yachts offers service, amenities, and dining as fabulous as their world-renowned properties. Booking with The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection also streamlines any other air, land, and hotel arrangements for seamless planning for the ultimate all-inclusive cruising experience.

"In addition to other, more well-known favorites like Seaborne, Regent and Seven Seas, lately, we have been inspired by a few luxury expedition vessels with far-flung destinations that offer outstanding dining, plush suites and action-packed itineraries for the more adventurous, high-end travelers," says Roca. " Scenic Eclipse   features eight dining venues, an indoor heated pool and its own six-person submarine and can take you to the depths of Antarctica. Celebrity Flora stands out in the Galapagos with its spacious suites, Michelin-star menus and most importantly, its unique propulsion system, designed to leave underwater habitats undisturbed. Lastly, the Ultramarine from Quark Expeditions travels to Greenland and the arctic, offering all the standard luxury amenities, in addition to top-notch adventure gear—everything from sea kayaks to twin-engine helicopters for sightseeing.”

best cruise lines celebrity cruises

Speer says if you're interested in taking a cruise but your partner may still be apprehensive, Alaska is an ideal destination for first-timers and several luxury liners have great itineraries. She particularly recommends Windstar, Seaborne, Silversea, and Oceania for Alaskan cruises, which have an abundance of varieties depending on ship size, amenities, and excursion offerings. She says this is also a great trip for multi-generational families looking for a memorable summer reunion in a post-pandemic world.

U.S. News Announces the 2022 Best Cruise Lines

U.S. News Announces Best Cruise Lines

Washington, D.C. – U.S. News & World Report, publisher of Best Hotels , Best Vacations and Best Travel Rewards Programs , today announced the 2022 Best Cruise Lines rankings , designed to provide up-to-date information on the leading cruise lines.

With much of the world reopening to international travel, U.S. News surveyed travelers to understand the effects of COVID-19 on cruiser sentiments. U.S. News unveiled the survey results at the Seatrade Global Conference in October which found that cruisers – both first-time and longtime – are booked at higher levels than before the pandemic. U.S. News survey data also revealed that of the frequent travelers who indicated that they would cruise again, 20% are already signed up for their next sailing.

"Though most avenues of travel have been impacted throughout the coronavirus pandemic, the cruise industry has seen the most challenges," said Nicola Wood, travel editor at U.S. News. "U.S. News is excited to once again highlight the leading cruise lines and provide in-depth information on ships, onboard activities and itineraries to travelers looking to research and book a cruise vacation."

Celebrity Cruises takes the No. 1 spot as the Best Cruise Line for the Money . Viking Ocean Cruises is the No. 1 Best Cruise Line for Couples and Best Luxury Cruise Line thanks to its adult-focused environment and luxurious and romantic amenities, such as fireplaces in each ship's common area and private verandas in every stateroom.

Disney Cruise Line, which offers ships tailored specifically to children and families, has remained the No. 1 Best Cruise Line for Families since U.S. News began ranking cruise lines. Additionally, for the eighth consecutive year, Disney is also the No. 1 Best Cruise Line in the Caribbean . Viking Ocean Cruises takes the spot of No. 1 Best Cruise Line in the Mediterranean for 2022.

The rankings help travelers select the best cruise by brand, region, traveler type and budget. This year's rankings are accompanied by an editorial rundown of the most popular river cruise lines for those looking for guidance on a different type of cruise that still offers itineraries with multiple destinations.

The methodology for the Best Cruise Lines rankings factors in expert evaluations of cruise ship quality, reputation among travelers, results from health assessments conducted by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and other factors, such as price class and itinerary offerings.

The best luxury cruise lines for an extraordinary experience

Consider these luxury cruise lines for your next trip.

Amanda Teague

The benefits of taking a luxury cruise

The best luxury cruise lines, book a trip with one of the best luxury cruise lines today.

The difference between a luxury cruise and a regular cruise extends beyond varying price points. A regular cruise often comes with all of the standard amenities and service levels, while a luxury cruise takes the experience a step further by offering an unparalleled level of opulence and refinement. Luxury cruises often include gourmet dining experiences, unique amenities, and VIP privileges, including priority embarkation and access to exclusive events.

Additionally, luxury cruises tend to focus on an adult market, with smaller, more intimate ships that often come with spacious and elegant suites or staterooms for guests. The smaller size of these vessels allows them to visit unique places that larger commercial ships cannot.

Most major airlines have a loyalty scheme that rewards frequent flyers with various levels of status and associated perks. Some have an extra invite-only level of status that is applied to some of their most valued customers. For United, this is “Global Services.”

Not much has actually been published about Global Services, with United’s MileagePlus program seemingly capping out with Premier 1K status. However, you may notice Global Services members called for pre-boarding, spot one of their dedicated check-in kiosks, or see it written on the side of one of those carts they use to transport elite members from the lounge to the gate.

World's Best Luxury Cruise Lines, Ranked

Azamara Club Cruises

Cruising is already one of the best ways to travel — all of your luggage stays in one place while you sail from destination to destination, you’re guaranteed at least three top-notch meals each day and there’s always something to do onboard, whether it’s a live show, a massage at the spa or hanging out by the pool.

But taking a luxury cruise? Now that’s really something special. Luxury cruise lines pull out all the stops, offering intimate ships with just a few hundred people on board, itineraries to jaw-dropping destinations and impeccable, personalized service. Of course, you’ll pay top dollar for all of these perks, but on the best lines, the splurge is worth it.

So, which cruise line is the most above-and-beyond extraordinary? U.S. News & World Report compared luxury cruise lines based on a combination of approval from experts and travelers as well as health ratings (a must after the past few years).

Which ones made the cut? These are the seven best luxury cruise lines in the world.

7. Oceania Cruises

Oceania

Year founded:  2002

Headquarters:  Miami, Florida

Number of destinations:  330

*This data comes from the U.S. News & World Report's 2022 ranking .

Bottom Line: Oceania Cruises

Oceania Cruises pool deck

You’ll find a mix of retirees, young couples and solo travelers on Oceania Cruises .

Four of Oceania’s ships can accommodate 684 guests, while two larger ships set sail with 1,250 passengers aboard. Despite being considered a mid-sized cruise line, Oceania maintains a 2-to-1 passenger-to-crew ratio, which makes it feel more intimate and personalized.

Oceania offers unique amenities onboard its ships, including art classes, a library and a card room complete with board games and bridge.

This is also the cruise line to book if you want to break your diet. U.S. News notes that Oceania "caters to foodies," with gourmet dining, cooking demonstrations, wine and martini tastings, and more. Some ships also have a cooking school where you can learn to make delicious dishes.

What Travelers Say About Oceania Cruises

Customer on Oceania Cruises

"We ate meals at seven restaurants & they were all delicious. Constantly changing menus provided a wide array of choices each day. Menus are available on your cabin TV so you always know what is available. Grilled Lobster, Lamb Chops, and Steaks were available every night in the Terrace restaurant Grill in addition to the ever changing evening selections. Service was very good throughout the ship and some of the staff are truly exceptional. Everyone was very friendly & always willing to help." — BobC1950

Sagrada Familia in Barcelona

Oceania also offers aptly named “grand voyages,” which are essentially itineraries that combine multiple regional cruises together into one incredible, super trip. Among the most memorable of these uber-journeys is a jaunt from Rome, Italy, to Miami, Florida, over the course of 24 days, starting at $3,399 per guest.

You won’t just be traipsing across the Atlantic on this action-packed trip — you’ll get to visit ports in Italy, Spain, France, Monaco, Antigua and Puerto Rico.

You'll also have two non-consecutive days in Barcelona, Spain. You can choose from myriad excursions, including seeing the city highlights and a chocolate and cava foodie experience. If you are already familiar with this beautiful city, we suggest taking a tour to the Monastery of Montserrat, a Benedictine monastery perched on the side of a mountain.

6. Silversea Cruises

Silversea Cruises

Year founded:  1994

Headquarters:   Fontvieille, Monaco

Number of destinations:  900

Bottom Line: Silversea Cruises

Silversea interior

The 10 small ships that set sail for Silversea Cruises are luxurious and intimate, with 51 to 304 suites.

Silversea’s all-inclusive cruises appeal to travelers over the age of 50 as well as groups, couples and solo travelers who are looking for small ships and luxurious accommodations. All of the cabins are posh suites, and they boast ocean views and butler service. The all-inclusive aspect makes the steep price tag worth it, with no limit on premium wines and spirits, in-suite dining or entertainment.

One perk of sailing with Silversea is its flexible dining schedule, which means you can eat whenever you feel like it with anyone you want. Cruises also feature onboard lecture series and expert guides, so you won’t have a chance to get bored while sailing — ever.

U.S. News & World Report singled out the line's focus on "exclusivity and personalization" as well as its "exotic itineraries and gourmet restaurants."

What Travelers Say About Silversea Cruises

Silversea passenger

"We simply cannot imagine that any other operator delivers better tours in as much comfort...We can strongly recommend this cruise. I cannot claim to have sampled a variety of Galapagos tours. But based on discussions with guides (who had worked on other tour boats) I feel confident Silversea offers the best planned and most luxurious tours." — Twinklles

Best Silversea Cruises Trip

Hubbard Glacier

For a truly once-in-a-lifetime experience, consider a compelling 18-day itinerary focused on the frozen north with fares starting at $17,550. After departing from Nome, Alaska, you’ll visit several Russian destinations, including Provideniya, Lorino Village and Cape Kuyveveem.

You’ll also get to explore dozens of ports in Alaska. The cruise will take you to places like St.Paul Island, Elfin Cove and Sitka. Cruise past Hubbard Glacier, the largest glacier in North America, and sail along Point Adolphus, where you might get the chance to see humpback whales or orcas. Finally, you'll disembark in Vancouver, Canada.

5. Crystal Cruises

Crystal Cruises

Year founded:  1988

Headquarters:  Los Angeles, California

Number of destinations:  1,000

Bottom Line: Crystal Cruises

Crystal Cruises room

You’ll find extremely personalized attention and elegantly designed vessels when you opt to sail with Crystal Cruises . The cruise line has eight ships, and most of them only include 461 or 535 cabins, meaning you won’t be battling crowds at any point during your journey. You can choose between deluxe staterooms (with or without verandas) and penthouse cabins on the Crystal Serenity and Crystal Symphony.

Crystal cruises range from six to 140 days and venture to destinations all over Europe, Africa, North America, Asia, Australia and even Antarctica. Since the cruise line keeps its passenger-to-crew ratio very low (nearly 1-to-1), you’ll likely never have to wait for service when you’re sailing.

U.S. News also highlights the line's "engaging enrichment programs," which range from the heady (workshops led by thought leaders) to the fun (dance lessons).

What Travelers Say About Crystal Cruises

Passenger Crystal Cruises

"The big difference from a mainstream cruise is that things seem to happen easily. For example when we sat down to breakfast someone was over in a minute to see if we wanted coffee and juice rather than having to go look for it. The quality of the food was outstanding, and interesting. The unlimited internet worked smoothly, and quick. Having everything included meant you were not constantly bombarded with people asking you to buy something, and there was not a blizzard of flyers delivered to the cabin with sales, and offers. At dinner every night we were offered a selection of special wines. The crew made us feel very welcome, and pampered." — JCMass.

Best Crystal Cruises Trip

Moai at Easter Island Chile

Crystal Cruises offers some of the most extraordinary itineraries in the world, including a 140-day trip that will take you from Miami to Barcelona for $69,489.

But don't think that this will be a straightforward transatlantic trip. Rather, you'll spend almost half a year sailing to the Caribbean, down Central and South America to then head to the Pacific Islands. You'll visit Australia and other countries in Oceania before going up to Southeast Asia, exploring the Indian Ocean and the East Coast of Africa. The trip then goes into the Middle East and the Mediterranean, stopping in several European countries before ending in Barcelona. Highlights include visiting the paradisal beaches of Tahiti, going on an African safari and stopping on Chile's Easter Island.

For a less ambitious, but no less extraordinary trip, you can spend 19 days sailing from Argentinean Patagonia to Cape Town .

4. Azamara Club Cruises

Azamara Club Cruises

Year founded:  2007

Number of destinations:  260

Bottom Line: Azamara Club Cruises

Azamara cruise at night

With incredible trips that visit more than 80 countries, Azamara Club Cruises earns high marks from luxury cruisers. The 45-and-up crowd in particular loves Azamara, with longer cruises typically booked by retirees who have spent years saving for relaxing vacations after the 9-to-5 grind.

In addition to snagging the No. 4 spot for luxury cruises, Azamara earned the third spot for best cruise line for couples and for best cruise line in the Mediterranean.

Azamara’s staff-to-passenger ratio is low — there’s roughly one staff member for every two passengers — so you’ll get personalized service when you set sail with this line. Cruises start at three nights and go all the way up to 26 nights on four ships.

This is a cruise line that also understands that size matters. U.S. New notes that boats are small enough to "reach off-the-beaten-path destinations, allowing the cruise line to offer unique shore excursions." No ship has more than 700 passengers.

On board, you'll have the opportunity to participate in activities like wine tastings, lectures and cooking demonstrations.

What Travelers Say About Azamara Club Cruises

Azamara entertainment

"This was our first Azamara cruise and we were so impressed with everything, we decided that we will be an Azamara Customer for life. The service was fabulous and with a smile. The food in the dining room was fabulous and the menu had many choices.

The pool area had some shade with lounge chairs to get out of the sun. The gym was great with a view, plenty of equipment and an area for yoga and Pilates classes, spin cycle classes. They offered watercolor painting , jewelry making and needlepoint classes at no charge." — Pboothe

One of Azamara's most distinctive trips is a 21-night West Africa voyage that starts at $5,159 and visits ports Cape Town, Takoradi in Ghana, Banjul in the Gambia, Grand Canaria in Spain and Lisbon, Portugal. Along the journey, you’ll taste local food, explore UNESCO World Heritage sites and visit open-air markets.

If you’re an adventure junkie, you’ll want to book a kayaking excursion in Namibia's Pelican Point. Travelers who want an immersive experience can do a drumming and dancing workshop in Ivory Coast.

3. Regent Seven Seas Cruises

Year founded:  1992

Number of destinations:  450

Bottom Line: Regent Seven Seas Cruises

Regent lounge

Come aboard one of the five ships under the Regent Seven Seas cruise-line banner and you won’t be disappointed. It’s the No. 3 pick for luxury cruises thanks to its quality service, low staff-to-passenger ratio (there's rarely more than two guests per staff member) and deluxe accommodations (all the cabins are suites).

Plus, you can really immerse yourself in the cities you visit and try many exciting new things. All shore excursions are complimentary, and you can participate in as many as you have time for at every port.

Regent Seven Seas prides itself on offering all-inclusive cruises all over the world, which means your fare covers everything from airfare and hotels before and after the cruise to alcoholic beverages, specialty restaurants, Wi-Fi and gratuities once onboard the ship.

What Travelers Say About Regent Seven Seas Cruises

Regent passenger

"The accommodations are very nice (especially after getting bumped up two levels), the food is very good, and the crew is exemplary! ...The numerous free excursions were top-notch and the shipboard entertainment was amazing. The cruise director even sang and has a voice bar none. The free wine and liquor was also top notch and flowing...I highly recommend this ship and crew to anyone wanting a great voyage. It was worth every penny." — Erndog72

2. Seabourn Cruise Line

Seabourn Cruise Line

Year founded:  1986

Headquarters:  Seattle, Washington

Number of destinations:  464

Bottom Line: Seabourn Cruise Line

Seabourn lounge

Coming in at No. 2, Seabourn is a lavish cruise line based in Seattle with a fleet of six super-intimate ships.

Each Seabourn vessel can accommodate just 458 to 600 guests, so you definitely won’t feel like just another face in the crowd on one of their journeys. All the rooms are suites, and they all feature ocean views, so you’re sure to be cruising in comfort. Though if you want an upgrade, you can opt for a luxury suite. Come mealtime, you can expect impeccable menus, including several created by Michelin-starred chef Thomas Keller .

Given all that, it should come as no surprise that Seabourn also landed high on the list in other categories — it also came in second place for best cruise lines in the Mediterranean and best cruise lines for couples, and in third for best cruises line in the Caribbean.

What Travelers Say About Seabourn Cruise Line

Seabourn expeditions

"The staff is tremendous. Some of the most attentive I have encountered. The food and ship wines were okay, not great. We do not cruise to eat so we didn't mind. The grill by Thomas Keller is outstanding, one of the top ten meals of my life...the wines off of their premium menu are fantastic. The stops were great. The tours(we only do half day) were well organized, interesting and fun." — kandylandmo

Best Seabourn Cruise Line Trip

Sydney

Seabourn has a 30-day trip of the southern seas starting at $14,499. Over the course of a month, you’ll travel aboard the cozy 229-suite Seabourn Odyssey and visit various ports in New Zealand, Australia, East Timor and Indonesia. See komodo dragons on Komodo Island, jumping crocodiles in the Northern Territory of Australia and exotic wildlife in the Great Barrier Reef.

The prospect of visiting East Timor is particularly exciting. Having gained independence in 2002, it is one of the least visited countries in the world . As you enjoy land excursions around Dili, you can feel lucky to be one of the 75,000 yearly visitors the country gets.

1. Viking Ocean Cruises

Viking Ocean Cruises

Year founded:  1997

Number of destinations:  200

Bottom Line: Viking Ocean Cruises

Viking cruise ship interior

Viking got its start with river cruises but began offering luxury ocean journeys in 2015. Since then, it's proven that its ocean trips are just as posh as its river jaunts. The cruise line was not only named as the best luxury cruise line, but it’s also been named the No. 1 line for couples, thanks to amenities like fireplaces, infinity pools and deluxe spa services, and for Mediterranean cruises.

Viking has nine, 930-passenger ocean vessels, each offering verandas for all cabins and seven dining venues. There are no children’s activities on Viking ocean trips — in fact, all passengers must be at least 18 — so you’ll find a calm, relaxing environment perfect for active adults and retirees.

Viking’s typical ocean cruise options range from eight to 93 days, though you can spend up to 138 days aboard a world cruise .

What Travelers Say About Viking Ocean Cruises

Yoga on Viking cruise

Aurora borealis in Scandinavia

For a totally unique experience, consider Viking's northern lights cruise . This 13-day journey, which starts at $4,999, departs from London, England, and visits numerous ports in Norway, all the way up to the Arctic Circle.

The Best New Cruise Ship Journeys for 2022

An abstract term used by the Romans, otium refers to well-earned leisure time.

By Becca Hensley

new Four Seasons Explorer cruise ship

Roman poets and philosophers felt most connected to their surroundings (and to their own souls) during a time of reflective repose, which they called otium. An abstract term, otium refers to well-earned leisure time. For early Romans, that might have meant a fruitful retirement spent following one’s bliss, whether soaking in thermal baths, gobbling grapes by the bunch, creating great works or napping in the sun. For passengers of Silversea’s new and opulent cruise ship, Silver Dawn, otium will have similar connotations in 2022.

As the luxury cruise line’s newly launched, proprietorial wellness concept, Otium — currently available only on Silver Dawn — is both an ethos that pervades the ship and a spa. Guests can embrace as much healthiness, or as little, as they like. Rekindling on Silver Dawn might mean a detox day of celery juice and hydrotherapy soaks in the Roman Bath-inspired spa, but it might also be a couple’s massage en suite, with champagne and chocolate at arm’s reach.

Infused with the salubrious tenets of the Mediterranean diet and lifestyle, Otium guides guests to a mind-body reset. On board, you’ll find otium in myriad aspects of Silver Dawn, from the specially designed Otium beds to the S.A.L.T. (Sea And Land Taste) culturally immersive culinary program. With itineraries starting in November 2021, Silver Dawn and her 298 ocean-view suites remind travelers that living well is the best revenge.

For those who prefer something tropical during the holidays, Greek family-owned Variety Cruises goes beyond the Cyclades to offer an eight-day jaunt through the Caribbean. Aboard the megayacht Panorama, cruisers can experience an island hop that goes from Barbados to Grenada, to include such jaw droppers as the Piton Mountains in St Lucia and diminutive, glimmering Canouan. Known for intimate sailings, cultural itineraries, and affable staff, Variety brings some Greek storge to every trip.

5 fabulous destinations for luxury cruise fans

Fran Golden

With free-flowing Champagne and supersized suites, luxury ships explore the coastal regions of all seven continents with cruise itineraries that go beyond the norm.

By nature of being smaller than the mainstream megaships, vessels in the luxury class sail off the beaten path, following the private yachting set to such dreamy destinations such as St. Tropez and St. Barth's.

These ships do classic itineraries too, but at a slower, more relaxed pace and often with the bonus of overnights and even multiple-overnights in iconic cities such as Melbourne, Monte Carlo and Singapore. There's time to admire the sights and to enjoy dining and nightlife on shore.

Luxury cruise itineraries tend to focus in summer on Europe – the Mediterranean, the Baltic and Black Sea -- saving the Caribbean and more exotic itineraries for the rest of the year. Some even explore such far reaches of the earth as Antarctica and the remote South Pacific.

Here are TPG's picks for the five best destinations for luxury cruising.

Italian and French Rivieras

luxury cruises brands

Cruising this region you will be reminded of the works of artists such as Monet, Matisse, Picasso and Van Gogh who found near-sacred artistic inspiration in the views of oceanfront cities, hills and villages, especially at sunset.

Your cruise will take you to France's Côte d'Azur, a place where you will find both style and substance, and to the glorious oceanfront cliffs of Italy's Riviera. Visit legendary cities and towns such as Nice, Cannes and St. Tropez. After admiring the bikinis on the white sand beaches or swimming in clear azure water, dine on oysters and French wine at a waterfront café, peruse the European designer shops, and check out world-class art museums.

As you explore idyllic coastal scenes, your itinerary may take you to the tranquil island of Elba in the Ligurian sea, with its miles of sandy beaches, pine forests, mountains, and delightful fishing villages.

A stop in Monte Carlo affords opportunity to explore the glitz and glamour of tiny Monaco, from the royal palace that is home to Prince Albert II to Michelin-star dining. At the 19th-century Grand Casino, you may pretend you are James Bond in the high roller's rooms.

Portofino, Italy, is an intimate place that makes a huge impression – its secluded blue-water harbor is filled with small boats, surrounded by colorful buildings, with green cliffs rising above. You may have a perfectly fine time sitting at a waterfront café admiring the scene, but there is also opportunity to hike the surrounds and head to Cinque Terre, the famed rugged coastline of small villages and castles.

Seeing the Caribbean en masse at popular destinations such as St. Thomas, St. Maarten and Cozumel, Mexico, can be a bit daunting. Even with crowds off the big ships dispersed to various beaches and sights, it's a mob scene at times. Visiting small, laidback islands is something else altogether, and a specialty of the luxury lines.

With their carefully curated itineraries, luxury ships afford a chance for you to immerse yourself in the Caribbean way of life, to slow down and enjoy the scene – including at night during overnight visits.

Your luxury ship may bring you to an isolated beach in quiet Anguilla and on some of the British Virgin Islands, with stops at white sand beaches where you can enjoy an intense "painkiller" rum drink while sitting in a hammock and admiring the clear sea and gentle waves. Divers and snorkelers will want to explore The Dogs, the BVI's prime marine area, with its colorful corals and plentiful sea life. It's considered one of the best places to explore undersea in the Caribbean.

Other excellent luxury itineraries explore St. Vincent and the Grenadines, following the typical private yacht routing, for instance, to Bequia and Mustique, for a perfect day at the beach – or at a local watering hole.

Greek Isles

luxury cruises brands

Luxury cruises in the Greek Isles visit both popular islands and areas beyond the norm. You'll have an opportunity to see the Acropolis and other ancient sights in Athens, then may choose a route that goes to Mykonos, with its picture-perfect, white-washed villages and trendy beach scene, and Santorini, with its sunken caldera and cliffside beauty.

Some luxury ships sail farther afield in the blue Aegean and Ionian seas. You may visit the spiritual island of Patmos, with its Byzantine monasteries and small fishing villages; visit Rhodes, with its Knights of St. John history; spend time in scenic coves of Kefalonia; or embrace the culture of Corfu or Crete.

Some luxury ships visit the Peloponnese, home of the treasured fortified town of Nafplio, modern Greece's first capital (from 1823 to 1834), with its impressive walls, red-roofed neoclassical mansions and cobblestone streets.

Some luxury cruise routes go through the Corinth Canal, only accessible to small ships that float dramatically through the narrow four-mile pass cut through sheer limestone – a shortcut between the Aegean and Ionian seas.

All Greek Isles itineraries will have scenes that take your breath away and towns where, if you choose, there's opportunity to dance with friendly locals or linger over a meal of meze (shared appetizers) and grilled meat or fish in an oceanfront café.

Seeing the "Great White Continent" on a small luxury expedition ship is about both creature comforts and intimacy. While some big ships, sailing at required reduced capacity, present views of magnificent white and blue icebergs as more or less a pass-by – passengers spend their time seeing glaciers and icebergs while staying on the ship – small luxury ships go to extraordinary means to make you feel a part of the cold and stark and ruggedly beautiful landscape.

It's de rigueur on the latest luxury expedition ships – operated by lines such as Ponant , Scenic Cruises, Crystal Cruises and Seabourn – to have fleets of Zodiacs, and in most cases kayaks, for expert-led, up-close-and-personal experiences with towering white and blue icebergs, whales of various varieties (including orca and sperm whales) and elephant seal, as well as time walking among penguins the size of small humans.

Depending on the ship, you may have opportunity to camp overnight on the snow and ice, go diving, try snowshoeing, fly over the scene on the ship's own helicopters, or see below the sea via your ship's submarine – on its latest ship, Commandant Charcot, Ponant even offers a tethered hot air balloon experience.

On luxury ships, you can do your great adventure while enjoying suite accommodations with butler service, fine dining and imbibing experiences and relaxation time at the spa. Select lines will even outfit you for the trip, providing complimentary take-home jackets. And you can skip days getting to Antarctica through the notoriously rough Drake Passage, too, thanks to private air service provided by lines such as Silversea .

South Pacific

luxury cruises brands

The South Pacific cuts a large path from Polynesia to Australia and New Zealand , so when planning a cruise here you'll want to do a deep think about what you want to see.

Luxury ships have you covered whether you are looking to circumnavigate Australia or New Zealand's North and South Islands or spend time in remote tropical paradises, learning about extraordinary tribal traditions, diving in massive coral reefs and visiting pristine beaches where yours may be the only footsteps in the sand.

Some longer itineraries combine regions – you may be able, for instance, to do Tahiti and Tonga and Melanesia, including Fiji and Vanuatu, and stop by Australia's Great Barrier Reef on your way to Sydney. Or do a 30-day sail from Bali to Australia or New Zealand, stopping by sights that include the famous "dragons" on Komodo Island.

More focused itineraries include New Guinea, where you may be greeted by village men in loin cloths and dugout canoes combined with Indonesia's spectacular Raja Ampat islands, with their legendary coral reefs and underwater caves.

On a cruise from Sydney to Auckland, sail through New Zealand's breathtaking Milford Sound and visit such places as the Otago Peninsula, home to yellow-eyed penguins and the world's largest breeding colony of northern royal albatross. Or focus on one country or area, such as the dramatic red cliffs, isolated gorges and towering waterfalls of Western Australia's Kimberly region.

8 Most Anticipated Luxury Cruise Ships Of 2024 By Forbes Travel Guide Editor Spencer Whaley

January 26, 2024

luxury cruises brands

The forecast looks bright for luxury cruising as a new wave of ships prepares to take the seas in 2024. These new vessels accelerate the trend of next-level luxury liners with innovative design, higher staff-to-guest ratios and exceptionally curated itineraries covering dream destinations. Consider Forbes Travel Guide all aboard these eight new cruise ships.

Celebrity Ascent

Celebrity ’s newest ship embarked on its seven-night maiden voyage to the Eastern Caribbean in December, so we’re including the Ascent in our 2024 list. The vessel boasts all of the signature elements of the Edge class ships — outward-facing design, staterooms with convertible indoor/outdoor spaces and the amenities of The Retreat suite class — and incorporates a beloved feature from the Solstice class ships: a whimsical rooftop garden. Among the ship’s 30 restaurants, don’t miss Le Voyage from Forbes Travel Guide Five-Star chef Daniel Boulud and the plant-based tasting menu at Eden.

Climb aboard the Ascent for voyages to Greece, Turkey and the Italian Riviera this summer.

Ilma , The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection

The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection made its splashy debut in 2022 with the sleek 624-foot Evrima , which holds up to 300 guests. The brand’s second addition to its growing fleet, the 790-foot Ilma (“water” in Maltese), will go a bit larger, accommodating only 448 guests in 224 impeccably designed suites — the highest space ratio per guest at sea. The vessel was designed to mirror a luxury yacht’s residential feel and provide the caliber of amenities (spa, infinity pool, humidor) and service that defines the brand.

For its inaugural season, the Ilma will set off to iconic yachting destinations such as the Greek Isles, the Amalfi Coast, the French Riviera and Monte Carlo . In 2025, Ilma will take to the North and Baltic seas for nine exclusive voyages around Northern Europe.

luxury cruises brands

Queen Anne , Cunard

The Queen Anne’s 3,000 passengers will feel like royalty with staterooms designed by the Paris-based design firm Sybille de Margerie (which also did the interiors for Mandarin Oriental, Paris and Royal Champagne Hotel & Spa ); afternoon teas and black-tie events hosted in the opulent Queens Room venue; and formal services such as white-gloved bellhops greeting you upon boarding.

Cunard’s first female captain, Inger Klein Thorhauge, will sail the Queen Anne in three regions during its inaugural season: the Canary Islands , the Mediterranean and Northern Europe.

luxury cruises brands

Silver Ray , Silversea

The Silver Ray, the second of Silversea’s Nova class ships, will join its older sister, Silver Nova, on the high seas this summer. The 728-passenger ship shares the Nova’s signature horizontal design (363 staterooms line the vessel’s length) and abundant use of glass in cabins and public areas, maximizing the panoramic views and spacious feel.

Silversea celebrates its 30th anniversary this year and continues to be one of the brands helping lead the frontier in the next generation of luxury cruising. All Nova class ships focus on sustainability at sea and at port, where, in an industry first, ships will be free of local emissions.

The Silver Ray’s maiden voyage will sail along Italy’s coastline, with stops in Croatia and Montenegro, before spending the remainder of the season in the Mediterranean.

luxury cruises brands

Explora II , Explora Journeys

Passengers aboard Explora II will find elegant design at every turn. The 461 ocean-front suites share residential comforts such as private terraces, floor-to-ceiling windows that open to the water and butler services to create authentic “homes at sea.” Toast your adventure with a glass of chilled champagne and a meal at one of the nine dining options as Explora II embarks upon 39 all-inclusive journeys to far-flung, bucket-list-worthy destinations in the Mediterranean, the Middle East, India, the Indian Ocean and Africa.

luxury cruises brands

Viking Vela

The newest member of the Viking fleet, Vela will join its 10 sister ships this December. The 998 passengers will marvel at the staterooms’ amenities (like heated bathroom floors and Freyja toiletries) and vistas (there’s a full-size veranda) during this inaugural season. The relatively small, nimble ocean cruiser allows passengers to venture onto ports inaccessible to most liners.

The Journey to Antiquities cruise sails for eight days from Rome to Athens , with stops at Pompeii, Crete and Naples along the way. Next summer, Viking Vela will cruise around Iceland’s coast , offering eight days of majestic Nordic beauty.

luxury cruises brands

Sun Princess , Princess Cruises

The 4,300-passenger Sun Princess will take the throne as the largest and most modern option in the Princess Cruises roster. Entertainment lovers in the bunch will applaud the ship’s awe-inspiring features, such as the state-of-the-art, 1,000-person Princess Arena, the Santorini-inspired terraced Dome entertainment venue and the 30-seat, Victorian-style Spellbound Theater, whose design was influenced by Hollywood’s famed Magic Castle.

And if all the onboard spectacle is not enough for you, the sight of the Mediterranean and Caribbean Sea and sunshine cement the wow factor.

luxury cruises brands

Disney Treasure

Once journeys begin in December, the Treasure will be Disney Cruises’ sixth addition to its fleet. Voyages for the 1,254 guests will center around the Eastern and Western Caribbean. Though many of your favorite Disney characters will be represented in some form on the ship — the colorful Plaza de Coco dinner theater and Zootopia -nodding Jumbeaux’s Sweets look particularly delicious — the magic-carpet-riding Aladdin will serve as the ship’s signature atrium character as Disney Treasure brings the fairy-tale land of Agrabah to life through immersive design that melds Asian and African touches in the lavish Grand Hall.

See inside a new ultra-luxury river cruise line that's charging up to $59,520 per person

  • Newcomer Riverside Luxury Cruises wants to break into the growing river cruise market.
  • The ultra-luxury cruise line  operates former Crystal ships in popular European rivers like the Danube.
  • Riverside's 2024 cruises start at $1,055 per person for four days.

Insider Today

A new ultra-luxury cruise line wants to be the swankiest travel-by-river vacation option.

To do so, it's enticing cruisers with truffle-infused butter, $320-per-person dinners, and butlers that can be beckoned with a simple WhatsApp message.

Affluent travelers , meet Riverside Luxury Cruises.

The budding company first set sail in March 2023. With a year of service under its belt, its three ships are now sailing some of Europe's most popular rivers — starting at more than $260 per person per day.

Riverside is operated by Seaside Collection, a European hotelier.

luxury cruises brands

The firm had its sights set on a river cruise venture since 2018, Jen Halboth, CEO of Riverside Luxury Cruises, told Business Insider.

Ironically, COVID-19 was the reason it got into the business.

Crystal Cruises declared bankruptcy in early 2022 amid the pandemic. Shortly after, Seaside purchased and updated five of the then-defunct cruise line's ships.

Three of these vessels now make up Riverside's fleet. The other two are being leased to competitor Uniworld River Cruises.

River cruising has become increasingly popular as wealthy travelers gravitate to ultra-luxury small-ship vacations.

luxury cruises brands

River cruise ships are much smaller than their behemoth ocean-based counterparts, allowing Riverside to sail in waterways like Europe's Rhine, Rhone, Danube, Main, Moselle, and Saône rivers.

Along the way, guests can explore destinations many giant ships can't easily access — like Budapest, Hungary; Frankfurt, Germany; and Amsterdam — sometimes visiting more than one port in a day.

One of Riverside's shortest and cheapest 2024 voyages starts at $1,055 per person for a four-day Danube River cruise from Passau, Germany, to Vienna.

luxury cruises brands

Alcohol and excursion packages can tack on an extra $75 to $175 per person per night.

Looking to ball out? The most expensive and longest itinerary is $59,521 per person for a three-river, 22-day cruise from Amsterdam to Budapest, Hungary, in the most expensive suite with the most inclusive package.

To compare, the cheapest 2024 voyage with all-inclusive luxury competitor Uniworld River Cruises starts at $2,000 per person for an eight-day Danube River sailing.

River cruisers tend to be over the age of 55.

luxury cruises brands

But the new company is targeting guests 45 years old and older, specifically those who frequent luxury vacations but have yet to try a river cruise.

"New luxury travelers want to be pampered, get off and have an adventure, and come back and be taken care of," the cruise line's CEO said.

"Pampering” they will get.

luxury cruises brands

Of Riverside's three ships, the 394-foot-long, 74-foot-wide Mozart can accommodate the most guests — up to 162, not including the 82 crew.

Yes, it's larger than Uniworld's ships, which range from 32 to 159 guests. But it's also significantly smaller than Royal Caribbean's new 9,950-person Icon of the Seas ocean vessel.

Like most cruise liners, Riverside's three ships have spas, buffets, and plush lounges and bars.

luxury cruises brands

During the day, travelers can enjoy lunch at the open-air grill and relax to live music courtesy of Steinway and Bösendorfer pianos, no less.

At night, they can dine on a seven-course meal at the 295 euros ($320) per-person Vintage Room.

Riverside’s ships have up to 5 restaurants. Vintage Room is the only specialty option.

luxury cruises brands

The cost to dine includes a wine pairing and plates like veal with truffle and chanterelle mushrooms and "surf and turf" with beef sirloin and scallops.

But don't expect a lackluster, rushed meal at the other complimentary options: "This is not a churn-and-burn," the company's CEO said of the ships' Waterside restaurants. "You come in for fine dining."

Infused, whipped butter is apparently one of Riverside's hottest commodities.

luxury cruises brands

Sometimes, it has chiles. Other times, it's infused with citrus. If you're lucky, you'll get one with truffles.

"People were raving about our butter," Halboth said. "Everyone's waiting to see what butter they'll get at dinner each night."

Need to sleep off all that dairy? You're in luck. Every cabin has a king bed.

luxury cruises brands

Riverside's suites range from 194 to 883 square-feet. These high-end cabins include butler service, stocked mini-bars, and espresso machines.

Some suites also have double-sink vanities and walk-in closets, a hallmark of an ultra-luxury cruise vessel .

Does Riverside’s more than $260 per person, per day fare seem reasonable now?

luxury cruises brands

If yes, book soon. It'll only get more expensive from here.

These fares don't offset the amount Riverside is spending on amenities like the upscale food, according to Halboth. To make up for these expenditures, the cruise line plans to raise its prices gradually over the next two years.

The company's CEO said bookings have been 'a little lighter' since the start of 2024.

luxury cruises brands

But the back half of the year is "filling up" thanks to Americans: About 70 to 80% of its guests are from North America, the company said.

Riverside will operate its Mozart, Ravel, and Debussy ships for three years as it 'hones the brand,' Halboth said.

luxury cruises brands

The cruise line's two additional vessels would join its fleet in the next few years.

Given the growing popularity of river cruises , it's a good time for companies like Riverside to start expanding.

However, it could face plenty of incoming competition.

Jamie Loizou, the UK managing director of luxury river cruise line AmaWaterways, is forecasting 2024 as a "pivotal" year for the river cruise industry, noting that 15 new river-based vessels are expected to launch this year, Cruise Critic reported .

Subscriber only, travel | 8 new ships coming to norwegian cruise line, sister brands plus dock at great stirrup cay.

luxury cruises brands

The parent company to Norwegian Cruise Line announced Monday a major order for eight new ships among its three brands as well as the construction of a pier to allow its cruise ships to dock instead of tender to its private Bahamas island for the first time.

Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings said it was planning to bring on four new ships for NCL, two new ships for upper premium brand Oceania Cruises and two ships for luxury brand Regent Seven Seas, all to be built at Fincantieri shipyard in Italy and debut during a 10-year run from 2026-2036.

The NCL ships would be the largest ever built for the line at around 200,000 gross tons and capacity of about 5,000 guests. They won’t arrive until after the final delivery of its Prima-Plus class ships expected between 2025-2028, the larger sister ships to the Norwegian Prima and Viva that debuted in the last couple of years. The four ships from the unnamed class of vessel would arrive in 2030, 2032, 2034 and 2036.

The new class for Oceania Cruises, which in 2023 debuted its first new ship in more than a decade — the Oceania Allura — will also be the largest ever built for the line at 86,000 gross tons and a capacity of 1,450 guests. They’re expected in 2027 and 2029.

And the Regent Seven Seas fleet’s new vessels will also be larger coming in at 77,000 gross tons with a capacity of 850 guests. They’re expected in 2026 and 2029. Regent just debuted the third of its Explorer class ships in December 2023.

“This strategic new-ship order across all three of our award-winning brands provides for the steady introduction of cutting-edge vessels into our fleet and solidifies our long-term growth,” said NCLH president and CEO Harry Sommer in a press release. “It also allows us to significantly leverage our operating scale, strengthen our commitment to innovation and enhance our ability to offer our guests new products and experiences, all while providing opportunities to enhance the efficiency of our fleet.”

No other details about the ships were released. Financing is already in place to fund 80% of the cost for the four ships among the Oceania and Regent orders, but financing for the four NCL ships is not finalized.

The eight ships expects to add 25,000 more to the three cruise lines’ passenger capacity.

In addition, the line is set to construct a multi-ship pier at Great Stirrup Cay, the popular Bahamas private destination visited by all three brands. The move follows the introduction of a dock that can support two Oasis-class vessels at neighboring Perfect Day at Coco Cay for Royal Caribbean while other private Bahamas destinations including Disney’s Castaway Cay and its new Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point feature tenderless docks for easy access.

“We are likewise excited with the addition of a new pier at Great Stirrup Cay to support our increased capacity in the Caribbean and multiple ships to call on the island, enhancing our guest experience and bringing seamless and reliable access to our private island year-round,” Sommer said.

Amazing Deals: How to Find Discounted Luxury Cruises

C ruising is an excellent way to explore more of the world, and for some travelers, it's especially ideal. They can see multiple destinations during their vacation and feel less overwhelmed about the trip's logistics because most of the planning details are handled already. Cruise deals are an excellent option for cruisers who want to avoid overpaying for travel.

Standard cruise lines aren't the only brands that promote cruise deals. You can book discounted luxury cruises if you prefer more luxury amenities while traveling. Are you ready to set sail? Here are four tips to help you find luxury cruise deals that won't drain your bank account .

Alert: highest cash back card we’ve seen now has 0% intro APR for 15 months. Learn more here.

1. Act fast to lock in the lowest prices

Luxury cruise lines typically offer the best prices to those who book early. As more travelers book, prices rise due to greater demand and reduced cabin availability. Last-minute cruise deals exist, but there are no guarantees that you'll be able to score a last-minute deal -- so don't delay. If you want to book a specific luxury cruise, make your reservation as early as possible to get the best price.

2. Browse cruise deal websites for promotions

If you want to book a luxury cruise without the high price tag, it can be beneficial to dig into websites that aggregate cruise deals. These websites highlight the latest cruise sales to help travelers like you get the best deal. Here are a few cruise deal websites to consider:

  • Cruises.com
  • CruiseDirect
  • Cruise Critic

3. Consider booking an entry-level cabin

You may also be able to save money another way: check the pricing for entry-level cabins. You can enjoy the many benefits of sailing with a luxury brand without having to spring for a premium cabin with a higher price tag. You'll enjoy the same food, amenities, and service.

Entry-level cabins are smaller than premium cabins, but generally, the cabins on luxury cruise ships are much bigger than those found on ships for more mainstream lines. The best part is you'll still be treated like a VIP -- but you'll get a better deal on the price of your cruise.

4. Look to your favorite luxury brands for sales

Luxury cruise lines aren't known for having frequent sales, but you can still score a deal if you find a sale. If a specific cruise isn't doing as well, a luxury brand may run a sale to fill more cabins. Follow luxury cruise lines on social media and sign up for email newsletters so you don't miss out on upcoming sales that could help you stretch your vacation budget further.

Make dreams of taking a luxury cruise a reality

Even on a tight budget, you can cruise the world in style. Use the above tips to find more affordable luxury cruise options. If the higher price point is holding you back, begin setting aside money in your vacation fund. Every little bit saved adds up and gets you close to your goal.

Over time, your savings will grow and you'll have the money you need to book an exciting cruise adventure in the future. But make sure you keep your savings in a high-yield savings account so you earn interest. For additional money-saving tips, check out our personal finance resources .
