How do I install Java for my Mac?

Install Java on Mac

Note : Below instructions are specific to macOS Big Sur (11.x)

1. Download the  jre-8u311-macosx-x64.dmg file.     Review and agree to the terms of the license agreement before downloading the file.

2.  Double-click the .dmg file to launch it

3.  A dialog box with Java 8 Update 311.app reference will appear

4.  Double-click on the .app icon to launch install Wizard. You might be prompted with message indicating app being downloaded from the Internet. Are you sure you want to open it? (See below screenshot as reference).    Click Open to continue.

5.  The Install Wizard displays the Welcome to Java installation screen. Click Install

6.  The MacJRE Installer dialog appears, prompting the user to enter a password to continue. Enter Password and click Continue to proceed with installation.

7.  This step will initiate install process. Once it is completed, a confirmation screen appears. Click Close to finish the installation process.

Cannot enable Java in Safari (or any other browser) in OS X

I have the following running on my Mac:

• OSX Yosemite (10.10.2)
• Java version 8 update 31
• Safari 8.0.4

I am unable to run any Java applet on Safari. I have added multiple sites to the exception lists (in System Preferences -> Java Control Panel -> Security), but it has not changed anything.

I also don't see anything related to Java in Safari preferences:

When I try to run a Java applet, it says, Error. Click for details. , and when I do, this is what I get:

I've tried Chrome and Firefox as well, and this is the common error they give me:

Whatever I do, I cannot allow for Java applets to be run on any browser.

• To Safari, Java counts as a plug-in. So you may need to click the "Website Settings…" button for plug-ins, find Java in the list of plug-ins, and add websites to the whitelist. –  Spiff Mar 19, 2015 at 0:48

Using Java SE on macOS Catalina

With macOS 10.15, Apple introduced new application security checks, which are used by Gatekeeper to verify the contents of distributed software. When you install or run software for the first time, Gatekeeper verifies that the software has been notarized. See Notarizing Your App Before Distribution .

JDK 14 is the first release that complies with the new macOS 10.15 hardening and notarization requirements. If you want to install and test earlier versions of the JDK or JRE on macOS 10.15, this document explains some expect warnings and how to proceed.

As of the time when this article was written you can still install and run non-notarized software on macOS 10.15 systems by modifying your security preferences. The following steps show you how to install a non-notarized JDK or JRE.

Note : These steps use the JDK 8u231 macOS installer as an example. These steps apply equally to all other JDK and JRE releases.

Installing the JDK Using a .dmg File

• Double-click on the .dmg file to begin the installation. The system verifies the .dmg file, then opens a Finder window with the icon of an open box (package) and the name of the .pkg file.
• Double-click the package icon to start the installation app. A window appears with a status bar with text similar to the following:

Installing the JDK from a File Archive

You don't have to modify your security preferences if you install the JDK from a .tar.gz file archive, in particular, a prebuilt OpenJDK package. However, the system may warn you the first time you run a Java command-line tool.

Running a Java Command-Line Tool for the First Time

When you run a command-line tool for the first time (such as java ), depending on which app (such as Safari or Firefox) you used to download the installer, a window may appear with text similar to the following:

Enabling Java to interact with the filesystem in Safari running on MacOS

How can I enable Java in Safari to load the IBM Daeja ViewONE Applet, and also to permit saving of files to the MacOS filesystem?

Java security restrictions, unless changed, prevent applets from loading, and also from having write access to the OSX filesystem

Safari's configuration must be changed to permit websites to run Java applets, and secondly to allow Java to interact with the file system (eg, to save a redacted document). To enable Java on Safari on OSX: Safari • Click on Safari and select Preferences • Choose the Security option • Select Allow Plug-ins, then click on Manage Website Settings • Click on the Java item, select an option (Ask, Allow or Allow Always) from the pulldown list When visiting other websites • Click Done, then close the Safari Preferences window When attempting to save a file to the OSX filesystem if the appropriate changes have not been made you receive an error message reading “Operation not permitted”.  To avoid this message, the website that is running the applet must be trusted. To trust an applet on a website, follow the steps below: • Go to Safari > Preferences. • Click the “Security” tab, then click the “Manage Website Settings…” button. • You will see the list of websites you have visited that use the Java web plug-in. • Select the website you would like to trust. • In the drop down next to the website, choose the option “Run in Unsafe Mode“. This allows the Internet plug-in to load and display its content completely without malware safety checks. Choosing Run in Unsafe Mode may present a security risk, so only select this option on websites you trust. • A dialog will be displayed to ask you to confirm that you would like to trust the website. Choose “Confirm”.

4 Installation of the JDK on macOS

The JDK supports both Intel-based (x64) and Apple Silicon (AArch64) Mac computers.

This topic includes the following sections:

JDK installers now support only one version of any Java feature release. You can't install multiple versions of the same feature release.

JDK is installed in /Library/Java/JavaVirtualMachines/jdk- <FEATURE> .jdk where <FEATURE> is the feature release number. For example, JDK 17 .0.1 is installed in /Library/Java/JavaVirtualMachines/jdk- 17 .jdk .

macOS x64 systems:

• jdk- <FEATURE> _macos-x64_bin.tar.gz

macOS aarch64 (64-bit ARM) systems:

• jdk- <FEATURE> _macos-aarch64_bin.tar.gz

When starting a Java application through the command line, the system uses the default JDK.

You can determine which version of the JDK is the default by entering java -version in a Terminal window. If the installed version is 17 Interim 0, Update 0, and Patch 0, then you see a string that includes the text 17 . For example:

To run a different version of Java, either specify the full path, or use the java_home tool. For example:

$ /usr/libexec/java_home -v 17 --exec javac -version

• macOS x64 systems: jdk- <FEATURE> _macos-x64_bin.dmg OR jdk- <FEATURE> _macos-x64_bin.tar.gz
• macOS aarch64 (64-bit ARM) systems: jdk- <FEATURE> _macos-aarch64_bin.dmg OR jdk- <FEATURE> _macos-aarch64_bin.tar.gz

Click Accept License Agreement .

• From either the browser Downloads window or from the file browser, double-click the .dmg file to start it. A Finder window appears that contains an icon of an open box and the name of the .pkg file.
• Double-click the JDK 17 .pkg icon to start the installation application. The installation application displays the Introduction window.
• Click Continue . The Installation Type window appears.
• Click Install . A window appears that displays the message: Installer is trying to install new software. Enter your password to allow this.
• Enter the Administrator user name and password and click Install Software . The software is installed and a confirmation window is displayed.

Do not attempt to uninstall Java by removing the Java tools from /usr/bin . This directory is part of the system software and any changes will be reset by Apple the next time that you perform an update of the OS.

• Go to /Library/Java/JavaVirtualMachines .

For example, to uninstall 17 Interim 0 Update 0 Patch 0:

$ rm -rf jdk- 17 .jdk

If you want to continue to develop with Java 6 using command-line, then you can modify the startup script for your favorite command environment. For bash, use this:

$ export JAVA_HOME=`/usr/libexec/java_home -v 17`

Some applications use /usr/bin/java to call Java. After installing Java for macOS 2012-006, /usr/bin/java will find the newest JDK installed, and will use that for all of the Java-related command-line tools in /usr/bin . You may need to modify those applications to find Java 6, or contact the developer for a newer version of the application.

4. What happened to the Java Preferences app in Application Utilities?

The Java Preferences app was part of the Apple Java installation and is not used by Oracle Java. Therefore, macOS releases from Apple that do not include Apple Java will not include Java Preferences.

Java users on macOS 14 running on Apple silicon systems should skip macOS 14.4 and update directly to macOS 14.4.1

March 26, 2024 Update:

On March 25, 2024 Apple released macOS 14.4.1 and indicated on their support site that it addresses the issue described in this article. Oracle can confirm that after applying macOS 14.4.1 we are unable to reproduce the problem. We have updated this article accordingly.

An issue introduced by macOS 14.4, which causes Java process to terminate unexpectedly, is affecting all Java versions from Java 8 to the early access builds of JDK 22. There is no workaround available, and since there is no easy way to revert a macOS update, affected users might be unable to return to a stable configuration unless they have a complete backup of their systems prior to the OS update.

The issue was not present in the early access releases for macOS 14.4, so it was discovered only after Apple released the update.

macOS on Apple silicon processors (M1, M2, and M3) includes a feature which controls how and when dynamically generated code can be either produced (written) or executed on a per-thread basis.

As a normal part of the just-in-time compile and execute cycle, processes running on macOS may access memory in protected memory regions. Prior to the macOS 14.4 update, in certain circumstances, the macOS kernel would respond to these protected memory accesses by sending a signal, SIGBUS or SIGSEGV, to the process. The process could then choose to handle the signal and continue execution. With macOS 14.4, when a thread is operating in the write mode, if a memory access to a protected memory region is attempted, macOS will send the signal SIGKILL instead. That signal cannot be handled by the process and the process is unconditionally terminated.

The Java Virtual Machine generates code dynamically and leverages the protected memory access signal mechanism both for correctness (e.g., to handle the truncation of memory mapped files) and for performance. With macOS 14.4, programs that attempt this will now terminate instead of having the opportunity to handle the signal.

Ahead-of-Time compiled applications created with GraalVM Native Image should not be affected, but your ability to build new images may be.

Oracle has notified its customers, Apple, and our partners in OpenJDK of this situation. We recommend that users of Java on ARM-based Apple devices skip macOS 14.4 and update directly to macOS 14.4.1 .

Run a Java Web Start (javaws) application on a Mac OS with AdoptOpenJDK-11 runtime

I had the situation that I needed to run a Java Web Start (javaws) application on a mac BigSur OS and AdoptOpenJDK-11 runtime. The OpenWebStart project provided me what I needed in that situation.

I didn’t want to install an older runtime like Java 8 and manage different runtimes only for the execution of the Java Web Start (javaws) application.

After the installation and short configuration on my Mac, I had only to invoke the Java Web Start application and it worked.

Really simple, that’s awesome 🤩

Selenium is a well-known software used for software testing purposes. Selenium consists of three parts. One is Selenium IDE, one is Selenium Webdriver & the last one is Selenium Grid. Among these Selenium Webdriver is the most important one. Using Webdriver online website testing can be done. There are three main Webdrivers present. For the Chrome browser, ChromeDriver is present. For the Firefox browser, Gecko Driver is applicable. And for Microsoft Edge, there will be MSEdgeDriver present. Excluding these, many more drivers are present for other browsers. In this article, the process of running SafariWebdriver is implemented. It is useful for those who use Mac OS. This simple Java program can be run.

Pre-Requisites:

• For running SafariDriver, the Java jdk version must be installed in the machine previously.
• The latest version of Safari should be installed.
• It is preferable to install Eclipse IDE on the machine so that running this code will be easier.
• The most important prerequisite is latest SafariDriver should be downloaded on the machine.
• Here, using SafariDriver, the home page of Google is going to open. For, that some methods need to be imported.
• First, the Google home page link is to be stored in a string.
• Then in the program, the property of the browser is to be set. setProperty() method is going to be used here.
• In the setProperty() method, the first argument is to be the Webdriver that is to be going to use. Here, using SafariDriver specifically that argument have to be passed. And in the second argument, the location of the SafariDriver.exe is to be passed.

Note : In this case, SafariDriver.exe is stored in Eclipse, so maybe the location seems different. But also, a complete File Explorer path can also be passed.

• Then a new object called driver should be implemented which is a type of WebDriver. Here, in this case, it will be SafariDriver.
• Then using that driver object, the get() method will be used. This get() method of WebDrivers helps to open some URLs provided. Here the home page of Google is going to be opened. So, only the string where the URL has been stored will be passed. Executing this method will go to open a new Chrome window.
• Then the sleep() method is going to be implemented. This delays the programs for some time. So that the output can be visible easily.
• At last, the opened Safari window has to be closed. For that reason, the quit() method is going to be implemented.

Below is the complete implementation of the above approach:

If the above code is run, then a new Safari Window will be opened. This open window will be controlled by SafariDriver.exe.

Hence, the program runs successfully.

• JavaScript is enabled in most Mac web browsers by default, so you shouldn't have to enable it unless you've turned it off.
• To enable JavaScript in Safari, click the Safari menu, select Preferences or Settings , click Security , and check the box next to "Enable JavaScript."

Enabling Javascript in your Mac's default browser, Safari , is an easy process. In fact, it should only take you only a minute or so to complete.

1. Open Safari (it's the compass icon that, by default, lives in your bottom toolbar).

2. In the top toolbar, select "Safari."

3. In the dropdown menu, click "Preferences."

Apple Releases Safari Technology Preview 193 With Bug Fixes and Performance Improvements

Apple today released a new update for Safari Technology Preview , the experimental browser Apple first introduced in March 2016. Apple designed the ‌Safari Technology Preview‌ to test features that may be introduced into future release versions of Safari.

The current ‌Safari Technology Preview‌ release is compatible with machines running macOS Ventura and macOS Sonoma , the latest version of macOS that Apple released in September 2023.

The ‌Safari Technology Preview‌ update is available through the Software Update mechanism in System Preferences or System Settings to anyone who has downloaded the browser . Full release notes for the update are available on the Safari Technology Preview website .

Apple's aim with ‌Safari Technology Preview‌ is to gather feedback from developers and users on its browser development process. ‌Safari Technology Preview‌ can run side-by-side with the existing Safari browser and while designed for developers, it does not require a developer account to download.

Most browsers offer a private browsing mode that aims to keep the websites you view off the record. But what exactly does it do in Safari and how do you get the best out of it?

First and foremost, Private Browsing keeps the website pages you visit out of your History . The aim is to prevent someone else from seeing which pages you have visited if they have access to your phone or computer.

In Safari, Private Browsing does a lot more than just hide URLs. It also:

• Prevents recent searches from showing up in your history.
• Stops remembering details you enter in forms for autofill.
• Keeps downloaded items from appearing in your Downloads list.
• Locks private tabs after a period of inactivity.
• Adds tracking and fingerprinting protection.

However, it’s important to note that Private Browsing does not stop you from being tracked altogether. Websites you visit will still be able to use various methods to track you, and will still have access to all data that you send them.

On macOS, iOS, and iPadOS, Safari groups private tabs together, and separates them from non-private tabs. On Mac, each Safari window is either private or non-private, and can have as many tabs as you want.

On iPhone, you can switch between private and non-private modes, each of which shows all tabs belonging to that mode.

You can spot when you’re viewing a private tab with these signs:

• The address bar has a dark background. This may be less noticeable if you’re using Dark Mode .
• On Mac, you’ll see a prominent Private indicator in the title bar.
• On iPhone, you’ll see Private alongside the site URL at the bottom of your screen.

The steps to enter Private Browsing mode are nearly identical on an iPhone and iPad. The only difference is that the tab icon is at the bottom of the screen on iOS and the top on iPadOS.

• Long-press the tab icon (two overlapping pages) on the bottom-right (iPhone) or top-right (iPad) of your screen.
• Tap the New Private Tab menu item.
• If locked, enter your passcode to unlock Private Browsing.

You can enter Private Browsing mode on macOS using either a menu item or a keyboard shortcut:

• Open the File menu and choose New Private Window .
• Alternatively, use the keyboard shortcut Shift + Cmd + n .
• Use the browser as you normally would. Any tabs you open from this window will open in the same window, in private mode.

You may want to prevent users of an iPhone or iPad from using Private Browsing mode at all. To do so:

• Open the Settings app.
• Tap on Screen Time .
• Under RESTRICTIONS , click on Content & Privacy Restrictions .
• If not already enabled, press the toggle next to Content & Privacy Restrictions to enable.
• Tap Content Restrictions .
• Change the Web Content setting to Limit Adult Websites .

The option to enter private mode will now be gone.

On macOS, the wording of certain options differs slightly, but the overall process is near-identical to iOS:

• Open System Settings via the Apple menu.
• Click on Screen Time in the left panel.
• Under the Restrictions section, click on Content & Privacy .
• Click Content Restrictions .
• Change the Access to Web Content setting to Limit Adult Websites .

Private Browsing will now be unavailable in Safari, although any existing private windows will stay open.

Of course, anyone can re-enable Private Browsing using the same process, in reverse. However, you can use Screen Time’s Lock Screen Time Settings option to set a passcode and enforce the setting permanently.
