Tokio Hotel is a band hailing from Magdeburg, Germany who formed in 2001. Since their commercial breakthrough with the 2005 release of their album “Schrei”, they have become one of the most acclaimed pop-rock bands in the world, with a devoted, cult-like fanbase to match.

Truth be told, most “Commercially minded” bands have just as much behind the scenes help as any other band signed to a major label, be they The Black Eyed Peas or Catfish And The Bottlemen. It’s just that some bands are better at hiding what they are or denying what they are to their fanbase and to themselves. To some, Tokio Hotel are the epitome of style over substance, major label pretty boys thrown together to sell as many posters and t-shirts as records. I don’t think it’s much of a coincidence that most people who think that have never listened to a Tokio Hotel song or know anything about them beyond Bill Kaulitz’s hairstyle circa 2009.

One closer look will show you that the band have an ambition that would put most other rock groups to shame, and have done since the very beginning of the band at the turn of the 21st century. Twin brothers Bill (vocals) and Tom (guitar) Kaulitz had both been obsessed with music since they were 9 years old, and decided to form a band of their own shortly thereafter. By the time they were twelve they’d already been rocking around their home country for three years, and 2001 was when two school friends by the name of Gustav Schäfer and Georg Listing spotted them playing a small club show in their shared hometown of Magdeburg.

They were impressed with what they saw, went over and asked if they wanted to form a band together, with Schäfer and Listing on drums and bass, respectively. With that, the first incarnation of Tokio Hotel was born, in the form of the awesomely named Devilish. The band started touring feverishly very soon afterwards however, 2003 saw the band make one of the key connections to their success. Bill took part in a TV talent show called Star Search at the tender age of thirteen, he only made it to the quarter-final but in doing so, he was discovered by producer Peter Hoffman.

It was Hoffman who got the band to change their name to Tokio Hotel, named so for the bands shared love of the Japanese capital city (Tokio is its German spelling) combined with the band feeling that they lived in hotels due to their mind-boggling touring schedule. With Hoffman’s help they signed a contract with Sony BMG and built a team of creators and songwriters to help the band, who at the time had an average age of 15, on their way. They were all set to release an album with Sony as well, but it wasn’t to be, and the band had their contract terminated before it could be released.

Tokio Hotel weren’t a band to give up that easily, however. In 2005 the band were taken in by the Universal Music Group, who re-launched the band to pretty much immediate success.

Their debut single "Durch den Monsun" went straight in at number 15 on the German charts before reaching number one soon afterwards, and their follow up “Schrei” went to the top five as well. Their debut album, named after their second single, went on to sell 300’000 copies in a year and both the remaining singles went to the number one spot as well. Tokio Hotel had arrived with style.

Since then the band have become the most succesful German rock export since Rammstein, breaking America with ease and gaining one of the most devoted cult followings in modern rock while they were at it. Of course they divide opinion, every band and artist that stand for something does and should, but they’ve earned every scrap of success they’ve found over their decade and a half of being a band. They’re already something very special indeed, and their star will only shine brighter with time.

Live reviews

I've always had a soft spot for Tokio Hotel and seeing them live reminded me why. They are such an energetic yet emotional group with a mix of both meaningful, mellow songs and more funky, upbeat rock tunes! I love the variety they present.

Seeing them live was unforgettable, they sound just as good - if not better - live. The sound was just incredible, it got my heart racing and the audience rocking! The guitar and bass was excellent and the vocals blew me away. They played their heartfelt song, Automatic, which was truly emotional, I even saw a girl crying! It was beautiful to hear live and I enjoyed every second of it.

The visuals were utterly stunning. The colours from the light show were breathtaking and exciting, it really enhanced Tokio Hotel's performance. Bill Kaulitz looked amazing as always with his dark eye makeup and dramatic hairstyle. He was wearing a really interesting futuristic style outfit which I thought was really cool! The atmosphere was fantastic throughout the concert, alternating from electric and thrilling to slow and thoughtful. Everyone around me, including me and my friends, were really immersed in the music and having a ton of fun! The band themselves were very involved and dramatic in their movements, particularly Bill and Georg, the emotion they expressed with each song was wonderful to see and really gave the songs even more oomph.

I would highly recommend seeing Tokio Hotel live to anyone who enjoys rock music!

Tokio Hotel was the first pop/rock band I've ever went to. As most fans know the lead singer (Bill Kaulitz) has a unique style of fashion. Their intro was amazing. At the House of Blues-Chicago they had this sheer sheet on the stage. I thought the sheet was to protect the artist, but it purposely came down at about the second verse of the song.On the sheet the tech crew projected geometrical shapes. They used the sheet a few other time on certain songs. I was blinded by the lights, but it was beautiful.

For "Kings of Suburbia" Bill picked four girls to come on stage and dance with him. Every statement he said made me smile and for every break when the lights went down he changed his outfit. It makes me think of some hosts on award shows that change on commercial breaks, but I got to see him live. It was quicker than T.V. though.

Since it was summer they threw water at us and the bottle. I think bubbles came out at the end,but it only went to one side. I saw it all! Would I go again maybe, but I hope someone can go with me.

Despite the possible cancelation in the mid of global panic over a certain disease, the guys still came to Guadalajara, they had a great time and we just couldn't be happier about the show.

Maybe 5 more songs would've been cool but hey, a concert cannot last forever hahaha

Evrything was good, no antics or violence at all. Safe enviroment.

One of the only bands I'll ever pay to see. Great music, fun show, and they're seemingly good guys. Definitely worth supporting these guys!I haven't seen them in years and would love to see them again!

(Plus the fan girls are super funny, don't get me wrong, the guys are adorable but come on gals, chill out. *Insert laughing emoji here* lol)

Lovely guys, was happy to see them. Great lights and stage setting. Performed three old songs which got me really excited, but that’s about it. Not fan of their new music, but fan of the four. :)

Tokio Hotel Announce ‘Beyond The World Tour 2023’

Tokio hotel’s ‘beyond the world tour’ 2023 kickstarts in london on 30th april at the indigo o2. new album, ‘2001’, is out now..

Acclaimed synth-pop/rock band Tokio Hotel are pleased to announce their long awaited ‘Beyond The World Tour 2023’, across Europe, starting in London on 30th April at Indigo at The O2 with support from LA based pop artist and TikTok star, Casey Baer.

For more than 15 years, Tokio Hotel have fascinated fans with their songs, videos and international concerts. They are more than a band, Tokio Hotel is a cosmos. Bill, Tom, Georg and Gustav have created their own world with their art, which goes far beyond the limits of their music.

In 2019 and 2020, the ‘Melancholic Paradise’ world tour had to be stopped because of Covid. 43 concerts in Germany, Spain, Russia, the USA, South and Latin America got cancelled.

In May 2023 the time had finally come, and with the aptly titled ‘Beyond The World’ tour, Tokio Hotel giving an exclusive look behind their own world on this tour. A total of 14 concerts in eight countries are scheduled, which will take Tokio Hotel and their fans through Europe in the spring of 2023.

More than 10 million records sold in 68 countries and over 70 platinum and 120 gold awards as well as 110 national and international awards – including the US MTV VMA Moonman, five European Music Awards, four MTV Latin Music Awards and the MTV Japan Music Award. There’s no doubt about it: Tokio Hotel’s music has conquered not only Germany but the entire world, giving the band a reputation that never rests despite its success.

Tokio Hotel’s live concerts continue to set new standards, with numerous world tours demonstrating that their productions are at the top international level. From the impressive stage sets to the opulent costumes and perfect sound, the band unmistakably underlines its position in the industry.

“Finally! The long wait is over and we can’t wait to finally be back on stage. It seemed like an eternity…I’m sure our fans felt the same way. We have been working on the show for months and are currently working on the final setlist together with our fans! Besides the songs of the last 15 years, we also want to perform a lot of new songs from our brand new album ‘2001’. We are incredibly grateful for your loyalty and are looking forward mega on the ‘Beyond The World’ tour to finally celebrate with you again,” explains the band.

Tokyo’s Coolest Neighborhood Just Got Its First Five-star Hotel — Here’s a Look Inside

Dreamed up by visionary Japanese architect Kengo Kuma, the Tokyo Edition, Ginza is the first true five-star hotel in the neighborhood.

  • Food & Drink

Activities and Experiences

Accessibility and sustainability, how to get the most value out of your stay.

Nikolas Koenig

With high-fashion flagships, blinged-out boutiques, and sleek showrooms, glitzy Ginza has a long-held reputation as the centerpiece of Tokyo’s upmarket shopping scene and its premier dining destination. Now, it’s home to one of the city's hottest new hotels, which has already become the place to be for those in the know.

Neighboring Cartier, Bulgari, and Tiffany & Co., The Tokyo Edition, Ginza is the first actual five-star hotel befitting this admired address. Shortly after opening in November 2023, I made the 86-room, 14-floor hideaway my home base for a short stay, allowing me to get up close and personal with not only the affluent area but also the city’s insider cool crowd, who have already made this hotel a hangout hotspot.

Kengo Kuma and Associates are responsible for the design, which is the first draw. The Tokyo-based studio is the hometown hero behind the Japan National Stadium (built for the 2020 Summer Olympics), as well as the Edition’s first arrival in the capital, the Tokyo Edition, Toranomon , which debuted in 2020.

While the 206-room Toranomon location is the undisputed head turner with all the bells and whistles, the smaller and more private Ginza hideout is the understated sibling, letting its prime location do most of the talking.

“Ginza’s shopping and entertainment history goes back to the Meiji Period, meaning that it was virtually a meeting point between cultures of the West and Japan,” says Kuma. “There are countless people’s memories and stories in this district, and I wanted to reflect them in the new hotel.”

Many of Tokyo’s big-brand luxury international hotels can feel out of touch with the local neighborhood, occupying the topmost floors of tall towers, but the low-slung, boutique-minded Tokyo Edition, Ginza blends in with the surroundings, with a street-level connection care of a ground-floor lobby just off the famed shopping street, Chuo-dori. “We aimed to provide a dramatic space in an intimate-feeling building,” says Kuma. Each morning of my stay, I walk out the door and right into the action, into an unending stream of serious shoppers and Tokyoites. I like feeling close to the ground and part of the city instead of looking down on it.

From the outside, opaque white curtains drape the windows, delivering an intriguing air of exclusivity, and living ferns add a biophilic touch. Upon seeing the new build from the rear of a taxi, I got a palpable sense of anticipation — we always want to see what’s behind the curtain. With a metal latticed façade, the color of the building seems to change with the light of the day.

"We applied extruded material made of aluminum for the exterior. The color is not printed; instead, the material itself has developed it," says Kuma. "The natural brilliance of the metal and subtle change of the color reflecting the environment was designed to enhance the character of Ginza."

“In Ginza, shops basically face the street and people often live in the upstairs of the buildings. It’s an interesting feature for a commercial area, and we created such an atmosphere in the hotel,” Kuma says.

While the exterior is cool and commercial, the inside is a chic, atmospheric gathering space for the global glitterati. When I first entered the hotel and peeked behind the curtains, I found a double-height lobby, visually dazzling, sleek, and sexy, with a white scissor staircase connecting the lobby to the mezzanine-level Punch Room bar. Off the lobby, the elevator vestibule is drenched in a buzzy hot pink neon light. After a few nights at the property, I see that this pink lightbox and the structural staircase are two influencer photo spots, but go beyond the lobby, and there’s even more to enjoy.

Here’s a full look inside the Edition Tokyo, Ginza.

The Tokyo Edition, Ginza

  • The eye-catching high-gloss exterior and ultra-swanky interiors have created a new social-media-friendly spot with a VIP air designed to be photographed.
  • Pared-back, white-and-walnut rooms feel very of the moment with only-in-Tokyo touches like belted yukata robes, cast-iron teapots, and fashion-forward, black-and-white photographs by Japanese photographer Takay.
  • If you want to stay in the double-beating heart of Ginza, there’s no better hotel.
  • With Sophie, a modern brasserie dressed in shades of chartreuse, and three bars including a constantly busy lobby bar; the retro, clubby Punch Room; and a rooftop natural wine bar, the Edition Tokyo Ginza has no shortage of places to play.

The hotel’s 86 guestrooms are classic Edition — minimalist in chocolatey walnut wood and swathes of polar white. In their simple, practical design, they almost feel like upmarket ship cabins and are considered reasonably large by Tokyo hotel measurements. (Bonus points for being practically noiseless.) High-end touches include green-veined marble basins; minibars stuffed with Japanese treats (yuzu soda, rice crackers, and yokan jelly candy, plus free teas and coffee); and faux-fur throws, a signature of Edition’s co-founder — and Studio 54 creator — Ian Schrager. Dyson hair tools are available on request for all rooms and come standard in spacious, corner-set Premiere Suites, of which there are nine, and in the penthouse, which spreads across 1,237 square feet.

There’s not much by way of views, but that’s not what this hotel is about — it’s all about location, location, location. It doesn’t get more Ginza than this, and the best view you’ll get is over the Louis Vuitton store.

Food & Drink

The Tokyo EDITION, Ginza

What the Tokyo Edition, Ginza lacks in views and amenities it makes up for in vibes. The hotel draws an in-the-know, cultured crowd, especially at Punch Room (another Edition Hotels signature), with J-pop-spinning DJs and communal cocktails served with ladles from silver punch bowls. Tokyo-based graphic designer Asuka Watanabe charmingly illustrates the menu, and cocktails include creative additions like Aomori apples (called the best apple in the world), umeboshi plum, and kinako (roasted soy flour).

Located on the 14th floor, the hotel’s lone restaurant, Sophie, serves brasserie-style European fare with Japanese ingredients (see: wagyu strip steak au poivre and glistening crudo of market fish). Breakfast comprises a small buffet across the bar top and made-to-order dishes like French toast topped in red bean paste and dusted with matcha and eggs benny on brioche.

The ground-floor lobby bar has 24 seats and seems to be busy at all times of the day. In the morning, there’s cake and coffee, but come evening, it’s all craft beer and champagne.

“Despite strict regulations for the height of the buildings in this district, we created a rooftop with greenery overlooking the town,” says Kuma, and an al fresco natural wine bar — the first of its kind in Ginza — is coming soon to the hotel’s lushly landscaped rooftop.

Besides a slightly claustrophobic one-room 24-hour gym with less than a handful of Technogym machines, there is little by way of amenities; however, guests can use the pool, tricked-out gym, and spa at Edition’s Toranomon location, which you must book in advance. (This is also the place to go for the spectacular views of Tokyo Tower and Azabudai Hills’ new JP Mori Tower, the tallest in the country at just over 1,082 feet.)

The concierge at The Edition Tokyo, Ginza, can help with local suggestions and bookings; however, to secure availability, they recommend submitting restaurant requests up to three months in advance.

Water comes in chic Edition-branded paper cartons, and there are few single-use plastics at the hotel. Rooms are outfitted with full-sized Le Labo toiletries, which are available for purchase should you fall in love with the custom black tea scent as I did. Towels are only changed if left on the floor, and bedsheets are changed upon request to save water.

Accessible rooms are available for guests with limited mobility.

Right off of Chuo-dori, essentially Tokyo's Champs-Élysées, the hotel is within walking distance of endless high-end shops and global flagships, including Mikimoto, Uniqlo, Muji, and the Kengo Kuma-designed Tiffany & Co., plus, shopping complexes Ginza Six and Tokyu Plaza.

The restaurant scene is also booming. According to the hotel, 34 of Tokyo’s 183 Michelin-starred restaurants list a Ginza postcode. There are also plenty of intimate izakayas (tavern-like drinking dens) down Ginza’s alleyways, like those around Corridor Street under the railway tracks. The Tsukiji fish market is also within walking distance.

Parking is available, but a car is unnecessary, and the Ginza-Itchome Station is about a two-minute walk away.

As the hotel is part of Marriott International, there are often offers for Marriott Bonvoy members (it’s free to join). From now until May 28, 2024, members save 5% and get 10,000 extra points . Also, keep an eye on the hotel’s special offers page.

In Kyoto, Five Hotels to Add to Your Travel Wish List

The city’s newest crop of hotels — from a luxury retreat on a historic estate to a 10-room inn surrounded by forested mountains — were worth the wait.

A bedroom with two low beds with white sheets and a joined inverse trapezoidal wooden headboard with two built-in side tables with small lamps.

By John Wogan

The pandemic lockdown in Japan coincided with a flurry of new hotels, especially in Kyoto, where the Park Hyatt, Aman and Four Seasons were joined by a group of independent properties and the first Ace hotel in the archipelago. When the country finally reopened to foreign visitors in October 2022, tourists came flooding back to the city of 800-year-old temples and bamboo forests spoiled for choice of accommodations, at a range of prices. The number continues to grow: Next month, the wellness-focused Six Senses brand will open its first Japanese outpost in the city’s Higashiyama district, home to many of the main tourist sites. Here, a look at five of Kyoto’s newer hotels that are redefining the city’s hospitality scene.

Hotel the Mitsui Kyoto

Andre Fu, the interior designer behind hotels like the Upper House in Hong Kong and Villa La Coste in Aix-en-Provence, France, has infused his signature aesthetic (extravagantly refined, with warm woods and luxurious textures) within the confines of a particularly historic area of Kyoto. The 161-room Mitsui, opened in late 2020, sits across from Nijo Castle, an enormous 17th-century compound and a UNESCO World Heritage site. It’s in stark contrast to the hotel, whose only timeworn element is an imposing entrance gate — a traditional wood structure over 300 years old and a remnant of the days when the Mitsui family lived on the grounds. Once past the gate, you’ll find a glass-and-steel building, designed by the Japanese architect Akira Kuryu, and landscaping that’s meant to echo the original garden pathways of the Mitsui residence, planted with cherry trees and steppingstones that meander above a glassy pond. The four food and drink venues include the French-Japanese Toki, overseen by the chef Tetsuya Asano (previously of the Ritz Paris), and the Garden Bar, strategically positioned to capture seasonal views, like the spring cherry blossoms and blazing autumnal foliage, out of massive double windows. Rooms from about $1,360 a night.

Ace Hotel Kyoto

The youthful Ace hotel brand might seem like an odd fit in staid Kyoto. But this 213-room property, which opened in 2020, fits seamlessly into the city center thanks to a collaboration between the Japanese architect Kengo Kuma and the California-based design firm Commune. Kuma, who designed the Japan National Stadium (the centerpiece of the 2021 Tokyo Olympics), renovated the imposing 1920s-era, red brick Kyoto Central Telephone Office, while adding an industrial-looking building — sheathed in copper sulfide plating, cedar, glass and concrete — next door. Commune infused the guest rooms with Ace’s signature mix of bright colors and patterns: original dyed prints from the Japanese folk artist Samuro Yunoki sit alongside Tivoli radios, turntables and vintage records. The most popular part of the hotel, though, might be the street-level branch of Stumptown Coffee Roasters — the first in Japan. From about $300 a night.

Arashiyama House Mama

Like Kyoto’s dozens of temple gardens, this 10-room property offers an immediate sense of calm. Its entrance is so discreet, you could easily miss it. (Look for the flowing white cloth curtain with simple black signage, behind which is a garden path leading to a minimalist building made of wood, concrete and glass.) The hotel’s location informs the interior design: Thirty minutes west of central Kyoto, the Arashiyama district is defined by nature, with the Katsura River at its center, and filled with bamboo groves and surrounded by forested mountains. Guest rooms are simply furnished with beds, chairs and tables handmade by both Kyoto artisans and the Danish furniture maker Carl Hansen & Son, and each one has a soaking tub. Rooms from about $540 a night.

The Shinmonzen

The Gion district epitomizes Kyoto for many visitors, with its maze of narrow alleys and ryokans, traditional Japanese inns. It’s here, on a quiet side street among artists’ studios, antique shops and galleries, that the Shinmonzen opened in December 2021. Although it’s a new build, the aim was for the hotel to blend in with the surrounding structures. To accomplish this, the famed Japanese architect Tadao Ando created a wooden facade that replicates a machiya , one of the venerable townhouses found throughout Kyoto. There are only nine guest rooms, but they’re unusually spacious, and all have balconies with views of the Shirakawa River. Each one is an ode to Japanese interior elements, furnished with tatami mats, shoji (panels lined with rice paper) and cypress soaking tubs. And for dining, the chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten, whose restaurant empire spans the world, devised a menu blending French, American and Asian influences, sourcing much of the produce from local farms. Rooms from about $1,500 a night.

Maana Kiyomizu

A three-suite hotel near the 16th-century Toyokuni Shrine, Maana Kiyomizu is the latest offering from Maana Homes, the small local hospitality group, which operates two other properties in the city. This one, opened in the winter of 2022, is located in Higashiyama, and is a complex of four machiya that also houses POJ Studio — a boutique that sells artisanal Japanese crafts and home goods. There’s also Kissa Kishin, the second branch of a popular Gion cafe, which serves coffee, matcha and pastries and acts as the unofficial social center for the property. The Japanese architects Uoya Shigenori and Takeshi Ikei renovated the suites to create a minimalist wabi-sabi ideal of city living, where handmade pottery from Shigaraki (a town famous for its ceramics) are the only decorative flourishes to be found. Rooms from about $560 a night.
