Top 30 Bollywood Travel Songs for Your Next Road Trip

Music providers including YouTube and Spotify work tirelessly to accumulate the best songs for you for every occasion and mood. But they usually are tailored to your tastes, and not everyone may enjoy them, especially on a group trip.

To formulate an appropriate playlist, filled with meaningful and even some guilty pleasure songs, we have prepared a list of 20 travel songs from Bollywood which you should consider adding to your travel playlist.

Best Travel Songs for Bollywood Lovers

This is the list of Bollywood Travel Songs that you can enjoy during your travel to anywhere, especially road trips.

1. Dil Chahta Hai- Title Track

Ever since its release in 2001, Dil Chahta Hai has been a staple movie for the 90s youth. Even if this 3-hour long movie isn’t as popular now as it was earlier, the soundtrack and especially this title track remains untouched and evergreen. A perfect match on rides with your gang.

2. Khaabon Ke Parindey, ZNMD

Rarely have we encountered both soulful and liberating song like this one, and coming from a movie like Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, it seems even more fitting to be on the list for journey songs. This soothing track will have you lost in the clouds and the landscape in your journey, and it is completely understandable if you feel like playing it again right after it finishes.

3. Ilahi, Ye Jawani Hai Deewani

Arguably the Dil Chahta Hai for a generation that came next, Ye Jawani Hai Deewani and its entire soundtrack has found a place in the heart and minds of everyone who dreams of traveling and pursuing their dream-like Ranbir Kapoor’s character does. This cheerful song, backed with vocals by Arjit Singh, is a relaxing one to groove to on your way to places like Manali maybe.

4. Chala Jaata Hoon, Mere Jeevan Saathi

A retro song is a surprise being so high on the list, but there’s a reason such songs are called evergreen. The jolly tone of the song and the lively fun-filled voice of Kishore Kumar are perfect for a ride on a sunny day among the hills.

5. Pataka Kuddi, Highway

Other than the words, AR Rahman’s groovy score and Nooran Sister’s commanding vocals are enough for anyone to enjoy this song. The context of the movie it comes from, where a girl finds liberation on a journey after being abducted, itself is liberating during travels and so is the song’s video.

6. Sooraj Dooba Hai, Roy

Lying on the intersection of party songs and groovy songs for car rides, this song has found a place on both of these playlists as an absolute essential. One example out of many where the movie comes nowhere near as good as the soundtrack, Sooraj Dooba Hai is a staple for, well, when the sunsets.

7. Ye Dil Na Hota Bechara, Jewel Thief

Another evergreen classic was sung by Kishore Kumar to Dev Anand’s mesmerizing bachelor. You will find yourself humming to the tune and the words after listening to it, even if you’re traveling alone.

8. Zindagi Ek Safar Hai Suhana, Andaaz

The words to this song suggest themselves be played on a ‘Safar’ and advice you to enjoy every moment as it comes. What better to heighten your spirits and embrace the positive vibes.

9. Yun Hi Chala Chal Rahi, Swades

Long drives can become too long at some point, but with good a playlist and clear roads, everything around you, like this song suggests, can become beautiful. Another AR Rahman composition on this list, the song is grounded with the home country in its lyrics and a cool fusion with the music.

10. Dil Dhadakne Do, ZNMD

Probably the most rebellious song from this movie, Farhan Akhtar really reaches for the soul with his strong vocals and brings out the adventurous spirit in you. Just like this movie’s entire soundtrack, this song too will never get too old.

11. Roobaro, Rang De Basanti

Sure, Masti Ki Paathshala was the most popular song from the movie, but the strangely elevated tune of Roobaro is something that strikes the most when you’re on the move. Especially for late-night drives, this song is meant for playing out loud.

12. Hum Jo Chalne Lage, Jab We Met

Once the excitement has settled, what better than a soothing tune to groove to. This song gives a calm feeling, mainly owing to Shaan’s vocals, and a sense of togetherness especially when traveling with friends.

13. Tanha Dil Tanha Safar

Back in time, Shaan’s voice did a number on the listeners and took them on journeys in their own minds. Even if the lyrics suggest otherwise, it is a great song to play on solo adventures and indulges you in discovering yourself on the trip.

14. Chodd Aaye Hum Wo Galiya, Maachis

Just like Tanha Dil, this song too will make you feel a strange mix of liberating emotions like it has been for two decades. Solo travels away from home can be overwhelming and while this song might not provide comfort, it certainly empowers you.

15. Kyon, Barfi

If soul-heavy and party songs aren’t your things while traveling, Barfi’s quaint soundtrack can accompany you with soothing and light-hearted songs. Sung by the melodious Papon, Kyon is a calm song with innocent lyrics about traveling on carefree.

16. Musafir Hoon Yaaro

The two primary lines of this song are probably the most sung compared to all others on this list. This cultural icon of a song and the image of the guy traveling on and on alone along beaten down paths has become a signature image of a ‘Musafir’. One can never think of Hindi songs about travel without this tune popping up at any time.

17. O Gujariya, Queen

Probably the wackiest and off-beat (not literally) song on the list, the context of the song in the movie too brings out the adventurous and daring spirit in you. It certainly is more of a party song, but a sing-a-long with your friends while on the road can make it a semi-party too.

18. Rang De Basanti, Rang De Basanti

Return to your desi roots with the title track from Aamir Khan’s runaway hit Rang De Basanti. AR Rahman reached out to indulging Punjabi music and cultural roots in making this contagiously groovy hit song.

19. Rock On, Rock On!

Farhan Akhtar makes another appearance on this list with his catchy rock song from his debut 2008 film Rock On!. While Socha Hai remains a cult icon with its distinct and catchy lyrics, the title track remains iconic and motivating too for someone aiming to pursue something. Arguably nostalgic for some listeners, following up with Socha Hai soon also seems appropriate.

20. Aaj Kal Zindagi, Wake Up Sid

While the movie offers a contemporary story about a guy figuring out college and works life, this particular song and its lyrics are also well-suited for a travel playlist. Just from the first verse in Shankar Mahadevan’s signature voice can give a feeling of independence and motivation for young travelers and especially the lone adventurers.

21. Zindagi Do Pal Ki

22. Chaiyya Chaiyya

23. Safarnama

24. Musafir Hun Yaaron

25. Gazab Ka Hai Ye Din

26. Chala Jata Hoon

27. Banjarey

29. Sooraj Dooba Hain

30. Patakha Guddi

The list is certainly not in order for playing since it depends on what kind of atmosphere you wish to set. Nevertheless, playing classic evergreens as the first song to start off your trip may not be as welcomed by your peers.

I Hope, these best Bollywood Travel Songs do magic on your travel journey.

manali-himachal-pradesh (2)

What is the first thing that comes to your mind when someone says Manali? Snow-capped mountains, swaying Oak and Deodar trees, gushing rivers and streets flooded with tourists. Yes, this is precisely how it is for any first-timer. But for a returning visitor, the city might act as a gateway to many new adventures.

Disclaimer – By the end of this article, you might want to pack your bags and leave. Therefore, I’ve tried to add all the essential details possible in this post so keep reading.

Manali has always been one of the popular towns in Himachal. However, its popularity soared sky-high after the 2013 release of Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani (YJHD), which was set in this picturesque town. I visited the city back in 2010. It was a five-day trip where I explored Manali along with Kullu. Manali is a town that you would want to visit again and again. Therefore, I hope to go back someday and stay for a longer time as there is so much more to explore. However, if you’re planning to visit Manali for the first time, here’s a list of things that you can do.

7 day trip to manali – brief itinerary, share this:, the 7 day manali travel itinerary .

Reach Old Manali, check in to your Hotel or a Hostel or a Homestay, and If you are wondering where to stay in Old Manali , here are some of our recommendations :

Hostel : Alt Life Manali | Zostel Manali | The Hosteller Manali | YOLO Backpackers – Manali

Homestay : Orchard’s House – The Hidden Tribe | The Professor’s Hut | Drifter’s Inn

Hotel : Apple Country Resorts | The Orchard Greens Resort and Spa | Keekoo Manali

Once you have settled in, just take a walk around the area, and acquaint yourselves with the surroundings.

You might as well, take an auto or walk till the Mall road, and indulge in some shopping.

Also, if you are wondering how to Reach Manali? – The best and the most cost effective way to reach Manali is by getting on an overnight AC Volvo from Delhi or Chandigarh. Alternatively, you can just drive on your own, or if you are coming in a group, a private cab can also be an economical option.

Old Manali has a charm of its own, and that is something that can be experienced only by staying there, and wandering on the streets.

The best way is to start the day with a relaxed breakfast at Rocky’s Cafe . For this you’ll have to go all the way till Manu Temple.

After having a nice hearty breakfast, you can either choose to make Rocky’s Cafe your Workstation With a View, or can slowly start descending, taking your time, and checking out anything that catches your eye.

Next depending on what time it is, you can go to the river side, and soak in the quintessential Old Manali vibes.

Old Manali Manalsu River

River Manalsu flowing through Old Manali – The Quintessential Manali setting

You can even cross the river, and enjoy a stroll to Hadimba Temple.

While you are near Hadimba Temple, you might also want to check out Southern Souls , if you are craving some delicious South Indian food.

You can call it a day, whenever you feel tired, or when it starts to get dark.

Day 3 of this One Week Trip to Manali is reserved for a Road Trip to Lahul Valley via Atal Tunnel . Atal Tunnel aka Rohtang Tunnel, built under the Rohtang Pass, that took around 10 years to be fully operational, has become the most famous attraction for everyone who is visiting Manali.

View before entering Atal Tunnel from Manali

At a length of 9.02 kms, Atal Tunnel is the longest tunnel above 10,000 feet , and cuts the travel time between Manali and Leh by around 3-4 hours. You enter the tunnel in Manali and end up in the Lahul Valley . And the very fact that you can travel from Manali to Sissu in 15-20 minutes via the Atal Tunnel is what has turned Atal Tunnel into the most talked about attraction in and around Manali.

Under ideal conditions, one can go all the way till Baralacha La Pass and come back to Manali on the same day, however if you take your time, there are plenty of nooks and corners enroute Darcha, where you can spend time just enjoying the moment and the scenery.

Darcha

One can always take a cab, however to truly experience the thrill of riding through the Atal Tunnel and immersing yourself in the surroundings, go on a bike / scooty.

PS – There are plenty of places from where you can rent a 2 wheeler in Manali.

Deemed to be the prettiest grassland trek in Himachal, the Bhrigu Lake Trek is something that should definitely be on your radar, which is why I have added the Bhrigu Lake Trek in this 7 Day Manali Travel Itinerary.

Bhrigu lake trek manali

While the best time to do the trek is definitely between May and September , when it’s all green and the clouds are at your level, one can trek up to Bhrigu Lake practically any time of the year, subject to the weather conditions.

Please note that the temperature during summers hovers around 20-25 C in the daytime and falls to 5-7 C at night. In winter the temperature gets lower with 10-15 C around daytime and nearly 0 to -7 C at night. Almost half a year the lake remains frozen, and one can enjoy the sight of snow even during the early summer time.

Bhrigu Lake Trek is a Easy – Moderate level trek, and can be easily done in 2 days, provided it hasn’t snowed yet , as snow makes the trail more tricky and you need to be cautious and you ultimately end up taking more time

On Day 1 you trek for roughly 4-5 hours covering a distance of 6 kms from the starting point at Gulaba at an altitude of 9000 feet until the campsite at Rola Kholi, which is at an altitude of 12,500 feet.

Rola Kholi Campsite | Bhrigu Lake Trek | Manali 7 Day Travel Itinerary

On Day 2 you start early in the morning and start the 4-5 kms trek uphill to reach Bhrigu Lake from Rola Kholi. Ideally it should take you around 3-4 hours to reach Bhrigu Lake, which is at an altitude of 14,000 feet , while taking intermediate breaks enroute to snack on and to enjoy the mesmerising views of the mighty Himalayan Peaks including Deo Tibba and Hanuman Tibba.

A 30 – 45 minute stoppage at Bhrigu Lake should be more than enough for you to take it all in !

The Views enroute

On the way down, it shouldn’t take you more than 2 hours to reach back to the campsite Rola Kholi, where you have your brunch / lunch.

If you happen to go with any trek company, chances are that you’ll stay back at the campsite for the night, but we recommend you to start heading back to Gulaba by 2 – 3 PM max.

As it’s all downhill, you should be back to Gulaba by 6 PM, and you can go back to your hotel/hostel – take a relaxing hot shower, have a hearty meal, and have a good night’s sleep.

Yes, you will be stretching it out on Day 2 and will be walking for almost 16 kms, but trust me, it’s better than staying an extra night in the tents, and walking down on the 3rd day.

Alternatively, you can also check out the Lama Dugh Trek, if Bhrigu Lake Trek is not feasible.

A 45 minute – 1 hour  drive from Old Manali is Hallan Village – A quaint hamlet in the lap of Himalayas, away from the chaos of Manali. And in this quaint hamlet, you will find a couple of rustic home-stays and hostels,  with unparalleled views of the majestic Himalayas, that can be your new Workstation with a view .

If you are lucky and there are clouds in the sky, you will fall in love with the setting, as the skies in front of you will be a canvas dotted with clouds, and numerous colours during sunrise and sunset.

manali trip song

The best thing about spending the day in Hallan – 1 , is that there are no distractions, and you don’t have to go anywhere looking for food, meaning you can be at peace, and have your creative juices flowing.

Being away from the hustle bustle of city life and the crowd that Manali attracts , Hallan – 1 is without a doubt, one of the best places to be based out of during your Workation in Manali   as you can easily Disconnect wIth the World and Re-Connect with yourself.

As it’s the last day of this 7 Day Manali Travel Itinerary , you can either wake up early and catch one last sunrise in paradise or can take it slow and wake up whenever you do without having to worry about the alarm.

Take in the last few moments of the bliss, soak it all in, and post lunch head back to the bus stop and take the bus to Chandigarh / Delhi.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Arnav Mathur (@theetlrblog)

#1 If you don’t want to do a long trek such as Bhrigu Lake Trek or Lama Dugh, you can opt for shorter hikes around Manali. And the ones that I’ll recommend are a hike up to Jogni Waterfalls , and a hike to Manali Wildlife Sanctuary , which is one of Manali’s Hidden Wonders.

#2 If you are a solo traveller, I highly recommend you to check into one of the hostels in Old Manali such as The Hosteller Manali | YOLO Backpackers – Manali | Alt Life Manali | Zostel Manali   , so that you can interact and meet fellow travellers and plan for the activities listed in this 7 Day Manali Travel Itinerary, together. It’ll end up being more economical.

#3 If time permits, and you can extend your stay, you might also want to check out some of these Boutique Home-stays in and around Manali such Zostel Homes Shuru | Mid Orchard Cottage | Zostel Homes Rumsu from where you can Work from Mountains as well.

This 7-day Manali itinerary is a treasure trove of experiences! From exploring the charm of Old Manali to embarking on the Bhrigu Lake trek and venturing through the Atal Tunnel, it’s a well-crafted journey through the beauty of the Himalayas. The detailed recommendations for accommodations and activities make it a valuable resource for anyone planning a trip to this stunning destination. Disconnecting in Hallan Village is the perfect ending to a week of adventure and exploration. Thanks for sharing this fantastic guide!

I’ve only been to Manali as a child and I really do not remember it being so gorgeous! I love how your itinerary is not the cliche, common one that travel companies offer. Bhrigu Lake seems to stand out for me and would be the obvious choice to include in my itinerary. I’d love to spend time exploring Old Manali as well. Trekking and camping are two favourite activities, so those are definitely going in my list of things to do in Manali.

Manali is a beautiful place and it was my first ever trip to North India back 8 years. I can’t believe it’s so long I haven’t visited Himachal. I did touristy things but didn’t know it has so many things to do. This looks ideal itinerary to spend the best time in the mountain s. Bookmarking this guide for the next travel as you have covered helpful tips and recommendations, places to eat and stay.

I haven’t heard of Manali before, but it looks like a beautiful place to explore and go hiking through. I love the view you get from your first dining experience, and the dumplings and pizza looks really tasty. Your guide is really well organized which makes a trip here so much more easier!

It’s amazing – all these pictures could be from totally different regions of the world, yet still, they are so close to each other. I would love to hike these majestic mountains – and in the evening, I’d enjoy these dishes I see on your pix. 😉

The beauty of Manali tugged at the heartstrings while reading this post and brought make memories of our own Manali trips. You have rolled the best of Manali experiences in this 7-day itinerary. The Bhrigu Lake trek is one experience that we have missed and would love to experience at the first opportunity. Hope we get back to Manali soon.

I have been following your manali and work from mountain trail for sometime now and I am so jealous. Even more so after reading this post of seven days. Of these, the one thing that I really want to do is drive through Atal tunnel. Have heard so much about it . Maybe this summer! (Fingers crossed)

Manali is such a beautiful place to be, one of the best in the mountains. And I am glad to see that your Manali itinerary does not use the typical touristy circuit rather gives a feel of real Manali and its character. This is definitely an indepth travel guide for Manali full with helpful tips and recommendations, places to eat and stay.

I vaguely heard about Manali, but I now learned a lot from your post. I like your itinerary as you give time for visitors to adjust to the altitude before they do the hike. Bhrigu Lake looks pretty, and I’m sure it looks magical in person. And I think pizza at Renaissance tasted better with a view like that.

Hey, Arnav! Thanks for this very comprehensive guide to Manali. I’ve only heard about it a few times before but didn’t know much about the place. Good to know about the new tunnel and also the hostel option for solo backpackers. I’m going to try to include this on my itinerary for my next visit to India.

Manali is still on my bucket list. The views are spectacular. But I was in Shimla and Dharmasala, and I love this part of India. I would love to explore and hiking in the next areas. Your Manali Itinerary looks great. It’s very informative, with plenty of tips helpful in trip planning. I would love to visit this region.

I have never heard of the area but I am a keen hiker. I know India has some excellent trekking routes and looks like I should be adding Manali to it. The views look amazing and the intinerary matches my needs. PossiVille sounds like a great place to unwind after a few days hiking. i love days like this when there is no one around and I can chillax.

I have always wanted to make my way to the Himalayas, and I had heard of Manali before. I love traveling to place in which the main things to do & see are all outdoors and nature related- disconnected from civilization. However, it is great to know that this is one of the best places to work from the mountains, as that need is growing more and more prevalent. Thanks for sharing!

Manali sounds like such an incredible place to visit, and you’ve really managed to highlight some incredible places to visit. The view from Rocky’s Cafe is breathtaking, and so many other places are eye catching as well, like Bhrigu Lake or PossiVille. This intinerary is absolutely amazing and seems to hit so many “must sees” in a week!

Travel Diary to Manali : A solo backpacker journey

Photo of Tushar Rathore

Life is a long road we travel, from experiencing the beauty of path filled with flowers to continue the journey with hard rocks beneath our legs. Many a times there is an uncertainty in our way which has either sweet or bitter taste.

Well, in my case the roads turned out to be thrilling one, there was a great gush of my adrenaline with every moment my chartered bus traveled along its way to Manali . There was a mixed feeling of excitement and guilt as the dream of going on a lone journey was finally coming true with the fact that my family still supposed that I was doing my internship in Delhi.

The bus continued along its way taking sharp turns every other minute and I saw a beautiful yet scary face of nature which was welcoming me and at the same time challenging with narrow roads and deep valleys. The long boredom of my internship had finally been broken and I felt wondered at how the ‘untouched’ songs from the playlist of my cell phone were making me feel amazed as if revealing their beauty to which I finally surrendered to sleep.” Cherry lenge bhaiya, Himachal ki special h ” broke my sleep as I saw a group of mature women standing beside my seat in the bus who were as energetic as the chilling morning winds and their face as red and welcoming as the cherries they were selling. It was 7 AM in the morning and I was 80 kilometers away from Manali, 40 Km from the Kullu Valley. After the minute hand of my wrist watch completed its two rounds, I reached Manali.

A serene town located amidst the ‘aanchal’ of the Himalayas. Manali had everything it takes to describe ‘someone’ beautiful. In this case the indefinite pronoun was a city where my shoes had just stepped in. I checked-in at a Backpacker hostel ‘The Lost Tribe’. After a refreshing breakfast, I started my journey. On my expedition to explore Himalayas, I turned my way towards a 2 Km long trek which led its way towards the Hidimba temple. The ancient temple which was named after Hidimba Devi, the wife of brave Pandava ‘Bhima’ and the mother of ‘Ghatotkach’. A three storeyed building built with rocks and wood, it stood proudly with skeletons of many animals on its wall. Thoughts of YJHD were being recollected in my mind as I made the way to ‘Clubhouse’. Like any other clubhouse, it had video games, disc and indoor sports. The only thing I liked was boating as excluding that, all things there seemed mundane.

The hostel indeed was the best in quality. After the dinner, we sat around a bonfire sharing stories with each other. The guy next to me was a Canadian who explained the beauty of India experienced by him in his two months long journey. There were stories from a Hyderabadi Guy who was on a mission to finish visiting all the states of India before turning thirty to a young Irish couple who were expressing their love in a unique way, by traveling. Stories continued from a group of ‘Royal Enfield’ travelers who returned from their Ladakh trip to my story of coming alone after leaving my internship in between.

The night grew darker and the beats of the songs with headphones on my ears was even louder. Indeed a mesmerizing view was there in front of me looking like a perfect scenery with light of the huts flickering in the dark backgrounds of the mountains. It looked like a perfect bouquet of lights like showing many colors of life, some vibrant, some dull but in the end, a very beautiful picture soothing my eyes. The songs of ‘Coldplay’ and ‘The Beatles’ echoed in silence. While probably other people in Manali were making out love that night, I made peace with the nature.

Second day started with a soul full of energy as I made my way towards the Beas River. Sitting by the riverside and contemplating the mountains was the best feeling I ever had. The cold water kept flowing as if telling to never stop, but to move on. The sun rose from the mountains and the quote ‘Rise and Shine’ never felt that real earlier. The great Himalayas stood high resembling the might and power it held within, yet very gentle and humble giving shelter to a prolific wildlife. The precious stones along the riverside were shining brightly on my behalf for giving this precious gift from God, ‘Life’.I continued exploring Manali and went to Solang valley for paragliding. It’s amazing how we felt in childhood when birds could fly and we wondered if we had wings. It came true for me as I jumped from a breathtaking height. Those few moments in the sky were moments of thrill and adventure in my life. As if the time had stopped and high I stood, up above the world. It was incredible looking down from such a height, seeing myself float above the Earth, suspended by nothing but a canopy and a harness. Finally the evening embarked my visit to the beautiful Buddhist monasteries. The Gadhan Tekchoking Gompa is situated on Mall road. If you still were not connected to the nature, this is the place to find your soul. The beautiful idol of Lord Buddha with aromatic fragrance of the Tibetan incense laid an enchanting charm on me that made me lure to visit the place again. The next day was probably the brightest of all. As I said, people here have something different, something beautiful within them. How could luck so favor me, that I met a girl Gautami. A girl in her mid-twenties whose eyes sparkled like a diamond as if celebrating every moment of being alive, talking non-stop . An accident meeting at first place, she made me to visit old Manali. An enthralling village that has beautiful cafes with sophisticated names and local shops lined on both sides of the road. Many foreigners gravitates towards the beauty of Old Manali.

A tranquil place located amidst snow capped mountains with apple orchards and traditional houses made with mud and woods. Sloshing river adds more to the feeling of solace. She made me visit many cafes, ambiance of all of those was unique in their own way. It’s amazing when you meet a girl who exactly resembles with the one whom you loved so much. In every way from her gentle yet captivating smile to her ‘non stop talking’ way in which she defined the beauty of Manali to me. That day made me nostalgic and it was one of the best days of my life. We still talk, though on WhatsApp.

Finally it was the time for me to bid adieu to the wonderful place that will dominate my mind for a long time.I came from Manali but probably left a little piece of mine there. New learnings, some cool friends was all that Manali gifted to me. You travel to let your soul free, finding the real peace. Probably, a travel bug had bitten me, whose poison still brings a smile on my face.

8 popular Bollywood movies shot in Manali

manali trip song

The scenic natural beauty of Manali has been captured a number of times in Bollywood movies.

Manali, a gorgeous hill station located in the state of Himachal Pradesh, seems no less than a paradise to the tourists. Also, the destination always tops the priority list among the Bollywood filmmakers, whenever it comes to shooting in a hilly region. It offers a lot such as snowcapped mountains, spectacular valleys, cascading streams, lush green forests, sacred temples, serene roads etc. that add a sense of aesthetics when captured in movies. Over the years, numerous Bollywood movies have been shot in various parts of Manali. Let's have a look at some of the most popular movies among them.

Aap Ki Kasam: The Rajesh Khanna starrer 'Aap Ki Kasam' (1974) was one of the first Bollywood movies to be shot in Manali. The title song of the film truly takes us on a virtual trip to the superb hill station.

Henna: 'Henna' is a 1991 romance drama movie starring Rishi Kapoor, Zeba Bakhtiar, Ashwini Bhave and others. The Kashmir part of the movie was actually shot in various regions of Manali.

Ghulam: 'Ghulam', starring Aamir Khan and Rani Mukerji, is a cult action-drama movie revolving around an amateur boxer. The song sequence "Aankhon Se Tune Ye Kya Keh Diya" was shot at Chandiyari which is located on the banks of Beas River, Manali.

Jab We Met: The Imtiaz Ali directorial venture 'Jab We Met' captured the sheer elegance of Manali in an aesthetically beautiful manner. The song sequence "Yeh Ishq Haye" was shot across the snow-covered roads in Rohtang Pass.

Krrish: 'Krrish', starring Hrithik Roshan and Priyanka Chopra, was shot extensively across Solang Valley, Manali. The first half of the movie is set amidst the snowcapped mountains along with lush green meadows and fierce streams of the site.

Dev D: Anurag Kashyap's iconic movie 'Dev D' showcased the quirky beauty of Manali in a slightly different approach. But still, the movie did proper justice to the raw snow-covered roads of Rohtang Pass, Manali.

Bang Bang: The 2014 action-drama movie 'Bang Bang' had its shooting locations in various parts of India as well as foreign countries. A major scene of the movie was shot at a bridge in Manali. The bridge then became extremely popular and went on to be renamed as the Bang Bang Point.

Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani: The Ayan Mukerji directorial blockbuster movie 'Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani' popularized Manali as the ultimate trekking destination among youth in India. A fun sequence of the movie was shot at the backdrop of the Hadimba Temple.

The list also includes some other movies like 'Hero - Love Story of a Spy', 'Fanaa', 'Tere Naal Love Ho Gaya', 'Raaz - The Mystery Continues', 'Oye Lucky, Lucky Oye' etc.

Travel Guide to Manali, India

manali trip song

Georg Schieren / EyeEm / Getty Images

Surrounded by snowy mountain peaks, Manali, India, is a popular tourist destination in Himachal Pradesh for Indians and adventurous foreign travelers. The Middle Himalaya Range provides a scenic backdrop while exploring Manali and the region.

Locals come to Manali for the fresh air and winter sports. Western travelers often use the mountain town as a base for trekking and outdoor adventures. Everyone enjoys the snowy scenery; a mountain stream passes right through town.

The Best Way to Get to Manali

Manali is around 350 mountainous miles from Delhi and is situated along the Beas River in the Kullu Valley at an elevation of 6,725 feet (2,050 meters).

The nearest airport to Manali is Bhuntar in Kullu (airport code: KUU ), but flights are intermittent. With no railway, reaching Manali typically involves a long, winding bus that crosses mountain passes at high elevation. Don't bemoan the lack of options: The fact that Manali is difficult to reach contributes to its charm (and lack of over development).

Bus From Delhi: You can take a 14-hour Volvo night bus from Delhi to Manali. Overnight buses usually depart around 5 p.m. and arrive late the next morning.

Buses do not have an onboard toilet, however, they make frequent stops. Plan on a very bumpy, winding ride! Take precautions if you are prone to car sickness. For better mountain views, sit on the right side of the bus. If you're squeamish about seeing the road drop off around some turns, sit on the left!

Bus From Dharamsala to Manali: Volvo tourist buses from Mcleod Ganj and Dharamsala leave nightly at 8:30 p.m.; the journey takes around nine hours.

Orientation

Tourist buses and minibuses usually arrive at a private bus lot around 200 meters south of Manali. Public buses arrive at the bus lot in the center of town. You can easily walk north on the main road (Mall Road) to town or grab one of the waiting autorickshaws ; always agree on a price before getting inside.

The wide, busy strip through Central Manali is known as "The Mall." Although there are several grungier hotel options along the main drag and on side streets, most travelers prefer to stay just outside of town in either Old Manali or across the river in Vashisht.

Many travelers escape hectic Central Manali by walking north up the leg-burning hill to peaceful Old Manali. The single strip through Old Manali is dotted with plenty of budget and midrange accommodation options . Tourist-oriented restaurants serve Indian, Tibetan food, and lots of Western favorites; you'll even find Mexican food and sushi on some menus!

Old Manali is an excellent choice for escaping the busy Mall but staying within range of town. Walk north on Mall Road then continue north on Circuit House Road to the steel bridge. Cross the river and turn left; numerous signs indicate where to go.

A little less accessible but certainly good for tight budgets, Vashisht is strung out along the hill across the Beas River and highway opposite of Old Manali.

To reach Vashisht, you'll have to cross the bridge just north of Central Manali then walk north along the busy Naggar Highway. You can turn right and continue walking along Vashisht Road or take a small, steep trail through a hillside community to Vashisht. Otherwise, an autorickshaw from Central Manali is inexpensive.

The vibe in Vashisht is laid back but in a different way than Old Manali. Plenty of backpackers on shoestring budgets head to Vashisht for the cheap accommodation and good views from balconies and rooftops.

Tips for Visiting Manali

  • Internet access is more reliable in Old Manali. Many cafes and guesthouses have free Wi-Fi , however, speeds vary. Check to see that a connection is working before you commit to buy something.
  • You'll find many ATMs in Central Manali around the northern end of the Mall. For safety, opt to use ATMs that are attached to bank branches when possible.
  • Many shops and restaurants in Manali close down around mid October. Some of the owners head home or move to Goa for the winter months.
  • Motorbike rentals are an option for experienced drivers to reach the many natural attractions just outside of town. Otherwise, you can consider hiring a driver for the day.
  • Although hash and marijuana are smoked openly (especially in Vashisht) both are still illegal in India.

Things to Do in Manali

Manali is an epicenter in Himachal Pradesh for outdoor adventure sports. From rock climbing and multi-day treks to paragliding and even zorbing, Manali is a happy playground for adrenaline seekers. Numerous agencies around Vashisht and Old Manali can arrange exciting activities.

Two hot springs, one in Vashisht and one in Kalath, are famous for their mineral-rich water purported to have health benefits.

Whitewater rafting is an option during the dry season. The river can become too swift during monsoon season.

Skiing is available during the winter months in the Solang Valley, just eight miles north of Manali.

When to Visit in Manali

The weather in Manali varies greatly throughout the year. Even in October you'll sweat in a T-shirt on sunny days then shiver at night when temperatures dip sharply. Summers can bring temperatures around 80 degrees F , but the mercury can drop well below freezing from October to April. Dress appropriately! Most guesthouses do not have central heating, but personal heaters can sometimes be rented for an additional charge.

Mountain weather is unpredictable; always plan for rain or quick temperature changes when setting out on an adventure, especially if you're hitting the trails self guided.

Where to Go After Manali

  • McCleod Ganj: Overnight buses from Manali take around nine hours. Don't plan on much sleep along the bumpy ride, but a chance to see Tsuglagkhang, home of the 14th Dalai Lama , is worth the trip.
  • Kullu: The interesting, mountain town of Kullu is around three hours away by bus.

  • Trip To Manali: ‘The Best Part Of Traveling Solo, Is That You Do Not Return Solo’

27 Mar 2023

A Digital Marketer by profession and a crazy traveler by passion — Nirmala Salam is driven by a desire to explore new places, foods, peoples and cultures. In her attempts to celebrate New Year’s Eve, she signed up for solo trip to Manali , organized by TravelTriangle . From being concerned about safety to making friends for life – Nirmala’s, was quite a journey. Take a look.

“I am happy when I travel and I travel to be happy!”

I have always been more of a traveller than a tourist. I am hardly ever concerned about a tour guide, or for that matter, even a travel companion. I had been exploring the itineraries of Manali trekking groups for a long. So, taking a pre-booked Manali solo trip with an unknown group on New Year, was about an adventure in itself!

Manali City Tour

Initially, I had planned to celebrate the New Year with some special members of my family. When that plan did not work out, I decided to do something other than my usual. I signed up for “New year celebration – Manali Hills” (a Manali group trip organized by TravelTriangle), which I recently got to know about from a friend.

The idea of a solo trip to Manali with a bunch of 100+ unknown people was seemingly exciting but laden with doubts. Initially, I was a little insecure about safety but dared to face the challenge.

This Is How My New Year Trip To Manali Changed My Perspective On Group Tour

Heading back to Delhi

Day 1: First Impressions

My journey started on a bus from Delhi at 7 pm and the ride, soon, became trouble. With the noisy group sitting beside me, I began to complain about the company in my head. But as I got talking to them, I realized how unnecessarily judgmental I had been. The energy and enthusiasm of the young group gradually brought me comfort. Now, this, did, give me something to ponder — Should the first impression always be last?

Day 2: The joy of company

Hotel Trishul in Manali

Well, we reached Manali, a little late than scheduled. Excited to settle in my room at Hotel Trishul, I ran into Deepti and Neha – two solo female travellers, and my roommates for the trip. We immediately struck a chord and in no time, they became like a long-lost friend to me.

at the Hadimba Temple

As the day proceeded, we were taken to the mesmerizing Hadimba Temple . Embraced in an array of tall Deodar trees, and with mountains in the backdrop — the temple was quite a spectacle to look at. We roamed around the temple and befriended some other group-mates.

  • Timings : 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM
  • Ideal Time to Spend : 1-2 Hours
  • Entry : Free
  • Best Time Visit : Throughout the year (Except August, the monsoon month)

DJ night in Manali

Our soulful visit to the temple found a perfect contrast in the night’s revelries. A party scene was set, to mark the beginning of the New Year. The DJ was on, dance was in full swing, and a cake was cut. Everyone was colored in the spirit of joy. With so much energy in the air, the night was a full-on blast.

Day 3: I wanna build a snowman!

Trekking in the snow in Manali

Scheduled for a visit to the Solang Valley during the day, we woke up at around 7 in the morning. The chilly weather was inducing a rush of excitement in me. Though I don’t set high expectations from any place that I visit, but playing in the snow and making a snowman were definitely on my wish-list this time.

Trekking with the group

We soon geared up for snow and went for a trek uphill. The trek laid bare different shades of the beauty of the valley. My much-longed desire to build a snowman was finally fulfilled, while we all made merry in the snow. In the evening, we indulged in some shopping at the Mall Road, before calling it a day!

  • Timings : 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM

Friends On An Adventure Trip To Manali: A Journey Full Of Joy And Thrill

Day 4: And the year begins

on our way back home

Come the last day of a trip and the memories you made, begin to flock your mind. Our stay at the hotel had come to an end, and I bid goodbye to the room where I had immense fun with my crazy roomies.

On the way back, we visited the Gurudwara Manikaran Sahib. The hot water spring in the Gurudwara refreshed my senses and the guru ka langar offered a perfect parting treat. Stuffed with langar , I took my leave from Manali and began the home-bound journey with some new-found friends.

The best part of traveling solo, is that you do not return solo. Some fond memories, friends, souvenirs and experiences; somehow, tag along.

High Points: My much-awaited trek in the snow and the crazy DJ night.

Low Point: The bus journey throughout the trip was very uncomfortable. Moreover, I think I missed out on visiting Old Manali. But I believe, it is good to miss something every time you travel. That makes you come back.
