The composer, arranger and multi-instrumentalist Marcus Miller is one of the most influential musicians of his era.  Since the mid-1970s, the bassist has played on more than 500 albums and collaborated with Aretha Franklin, George Benson and Al Jarreau, not forgetting Miles Davis, for whom he wrote and produced  Tutu  in 1986.  Now focused on his solo career, the slap master has released over a dozen albums and composed around 20 film soundtracks.  Always keen to convey a message in addition to his unstoppable groove, his most renowned releases are  Afrodeezia – a tribute to his ancestors, and  Laid Back,  a formidable synthesis of R&B, funk, hip-hop and jazz.  A firm favourite at the Montreux Jazz Festival since his first appearance in 1981, Marcus Miller left an indelible mark in 1997 with “Legends”, an ephemeral supergroup formed with Steve Gadd, Joe Sample, Eric Clapton and David Sanborn.

Among the greatest electric bassists in the history of the instrument, Marcus Miller is a jazz renaissance man. A two-time GRAMMY-winning producer, arranger, keyboardist, bass clarinetist, and film composer, he was instrumental to Miles Davis’ resurgence in the 1980s and a collaborator with everyone from Dizzy Gillespie, Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, and McCoy Tyner to Paul Simon, Aretha Franklin, and Luther Vandross. He returns to the Miner stage for the first time in nearly five years, performing new music and material from across his staggering career.

A wildly prolific studio musician, Miller and his distinctive bass virtuosity have been heard on well over 500 sessions for a dizzying array of major artists, and as a bandleader, the Brooklyn native has found time to release 18 multifaceted albums, starting with his sparkling 1983 debut Suddenly . His soundtrack work spans decades, from 90s comedies including House Party , Eddie Murphy’s Boomerang , and Keenan Ivory Wayans’ A Low Down Dirty Shame to the Chris Rock television series Everybody Hates Chris and 2014’s About Last Night . In 2012, Miller was named a UNESCO Artist for Peace, working to promote their Slave Route Project that contributes to a better understanding of the causes and consequences of the global slave trade.

Among the greatest bassists in history, the double GRAMMY-winning composer, producer, and multi-instrumentalist helped revitalize Miles Davis’ career and has worked with Dizzy Gillespie, Herbie Hancock, and Luther Vandross, among others.

Marcus Miller is the host and creative director of two of the most successful and revered jazz cruise programs in the world, The Smooth Jazz Cruise and Blue Note at Sea.  Both cruises are produced by Entertainment Cruise Productions (ECP). Over the years, Marcus has hosted and starred on other programs for ECP, including North Sea Jazz Cruise, Playboy Jazz Cruise, Marcus Miller’s Tour of NYC Jazz Clubs, The Jazz Cruise and The Signature Jazz Cruise. 

The Smooth Jazz Cruise

Since 2010, Marcus Miller has been a driving force behind The Smooth Jazz Cruise, the most successful music cruise ever produced. Founded in 2004, the cruise has had several hosts and leaders over the years, but once Marcus Miller and, a year later, David Sanborn became the named hosts of the cruise, the format went from one successful sailing per year to two sailings and now is clearly one of, if not the most important and recognized contemporary jazz events in the world. Marcus not only performs on the cruise, but also serves as the host of several events and holds the unique position of being the jazz educator for the cruise, imparting a history of jazz that enhances the experience of every guest.  Boney James is now Marcus Miller's co-host and The Smooth Jazz Cruise celebrated its 15th Anniversary and 20th Sailing in 2018, has two amazing cruises planned for 2019 (which are nearly sold out) and will announce its plans for 2020 later this summer.

BlueNote at Sea Cruise

The latest and most ambitious jazz cruise program that Entertainment Cruise Productions has produced is Blue Note at Sea Cruise which sailed in 2017 and 2018. Marcus Miller not only is the host of this cruise, but he is instrumental in the creation of the lineup, the onboard events and serves as the Music Director as well. The cruise has featured such jazz stars as Chick Corea, Pat Metheny, Gregory Porter, Dianne Reeves, Lalah Hathaway, Charles Lloyd, David Sanborn and many others.  Blue Note at Sea 2019 sails on January 26 and features the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis, Robert Glasper, Cecile McLorin Salvant, Kurt Elling, Terence Blanchard, Jason Moran, Christian Scott, as well as David Sanborn and his all star band.
