Fastbreak Sports

Boys Travel Basketball Teams

Boys Travel Basketball Teams

Fastbreak Sports’ travel basketball program is for players in 2nd – 9th grade who are looking for a competitive and fun basketball experience. Each player will have two opportunities to get better each week (one team practice, one skills session) in addition to games. Practices will be built around concepts that prioritize the development of the individual and the team, preparing for competitive game play on weekends.

Why play for Fastbreak?

  • DEVELOPMENT FIRST – Winning matters. But it’s not the only thing that matters. While our teams will strive to win each game they play, our program and coach’s first priority is the development of your child. Their skill set should be advancing day-to-day and week-to-week. Each practice and game should be allowing your kid to use new skill sets that will propel their game forward.
  • GAME TRANSFERRABLE EMPHASES – Our travel program is designed to teach principles and skills that make a difference in game play for your child. All skills are nice, but the skills and reads that translate into making a school team or getting more playing time are our main focus. It might take more time to teach, but we are going to emphasize man-to-man defense, offensive motion principles and other concepts that translate in game play situations.
  • GREAT COACHES – Your team will be coached by one of our amazing coaches with experience playing or coaching at the highest level. That coach will be with you for the entire season for practices and games. The best teams have continuity and grow together!
  • MORE THAN BASKETBALL – It’s about more than just basketball. Playing for Fastbreak means you are also being coached on how to be a great teammate, a great leader and elite competitor.
  • THE GEAR – As part of the travel season package ($1,995), all players will receive a full reversible uniform (jersey and shorts) along with additional gear such as: team sweatshirts, shooting shirts, socks, etc.

League Details

  • PRACTICES –   All players will have two opportunities to get better per week, with team practices beginning on October 28th, and running through early March. Teams will have a Saturday team practice (90 minutes) on the Upper East Side. Additionally, you can choose your weekday skills class, and those will begin in after Thanksgiving Break.
  • GAMES – Games will be played primarily on Sundays, with a possible Saturday. All teams are scheduled to play in the 55 Swish League in Manhattan. Game sites will be Upper East Side, Upper West Side, Financial District, and Basketball City (Pier 36).

Select Basketball

Basketball Travel Teams Overview

About the program – spring and summer.

Select Basketball NXTPRO Teams range from 14U-17U and will compete in tournaments in April, May, and July. Though the NCAA-certified events are constantly changing, they are a big focus of our season.

The spring is designed to further a player’s development and prepare them for the summer. Players and families may start the spring a little unsure of the competitive levels that are beyond their local area but will finish the spring with a much better idea of what competition looks like across the nation and will be better prepared to improve their game.

The summer is designed to further a player’s development and college recruiting. The younger teams will get an incredible experience traveling like a college program and learning the recruiting process. Older teams will start to take big steps toward their college recruiting, especially the 16U and 17U teams, which will typically compete in the top pools of all the tournaments we compete in.

Players and families that have not participated in the summer with one of our Select teams may be a little unsure of the competitive levels that are beyond their local area. However, players will finish the summer basketball season with a much better idea of what competition looks like across the nation and will be better prepared to improve their game.

Additionally, players will finish the basketball season knowing that playing for a Select team gives them the best chance to improve their game and get the most college recruiting exposure available. In fact, Select Basketball will create new opportunities that may not be available with other programs.

What you need to know about the Select Basketball program

Here are the answers to several of the questions we typically get about our summer basketball program

How do I make a team?

Players can make a travel team by attending a tryout and then being selected by a coach for their age group. We typically have multiple tryouts each year in various locations. To learn more about our tryouts, watch this YouTube video .

The tryouts are typically multiple sessions, giving players ample opportunity to showcase their talent.

If you are interested in seeing how teams are formed, you can watch this YouTube video .

How much does it cost?

The team dues for the basketball travel teams vary from year to year. The dues that each player pays covers the cost of tournament entry fees, facility fees, hotel rooms, and travel arrangements to and from tournaments as well as while we are at tournaments. To see more about how we determine the price, click here to watch this YouTube video.

Players will be expected to pay for travel expenses to and from tournament cities on their own. However, our coaching staff is more than happy to make arrangements to have players picked up and dropped off before and after the tournament ends.

How do teams practice and travel in the spring and summer?

The spring and summer basketball travel teams differ a lot in how they travel and practice.

Spring – March to May

Typically, in the spring, prior to our first tournament, teams will all gather in a convenient location to host a quick mini-camp. This is the best solution for everyone as our players come from all over the Northwest. At the mini-camp, teams put in basic offensive and defensive game plans while building chemistry as a unit.

During tournament weekends in the spring, players will get themselves to the tournament cities. With the exception of the Northwest Premier Invitational tournament, Select will make the in-tournament travel and lodging arrangements. This is very similar to a college experience. During tournaments, we will travel as a team, stay in the same hotel rooms, eat together and compete together.

Summer – July

In the summer, teams typically get together on a college campus to hold a 2 or 3-day mini-camp. At mini-camp, we practice twice per day and teams will put in their offensive and defensive systems while building chemistry as a team. To get an idea of how our practices work, we have created a YouTube video that you can watch here .

What type of development do players get?

Each age level has specific goals, though all teams have the overriding goal of helping players become better players, teammates, and people.

Competing with a Select team provides the highest level of overall development a player can get when it comes to preparing for the upcoming high school season and understanding how to compete at the college level.

For 14U and 15U teams we are trying to open their eyes to another level of competition and understand what it takes to succeed as an individual. Often times at this age, players have not experienced a high level of competition outside of their local area. They may also believe that they have already competed at the highest level. Additionally, players at this age are still learning what their maximum effort can be. Our coaches do an excellent job of presenting tough opportunities, teaching from mistakes, and getting maximum effort out of their players. The learning curve is steep but confidence and skill development at this level is often dramatic. For players at a younger age, the summer can be long so our coaches understand how to work with them in this new circumstance.

15U and 16U are evolving to the next level of becoming college-level players. They are starting to understand the amount of work it takes to be successful beyond their local area. But they realize they still have a long way to go. At this point, coaches are putting in more complicated schemes and expecting more production from their players. Off-season work has become critical. Some players will get passed up by harder workers while others continue to grind and move their way up the Select ladder. To learn about the highest level of play, click here for information on the PRO16 Teams

16U and 17U players are now really “getting it”. If a player is able to make a 16U or 17U Select team it means they now possess a skill or set of skills that make them incredibly valuable to a team. The recruiting process is now in full effect. Players are learning to make plays on their own within the structure of their coach’s philosophy. At this level, every player on Select rosters are the best of the best at their school. It is the small things they do on and off the court that will separate them from the pack.

Who should play Select Basketball and why?

Players that compete in for Select are committing to all of the April, May, and July events, including the mini-camp and all tournaments. This is a large commitment of time and money. If you aren’t sure you are ready for this level of commitment, our program may not be right for you at this time.

However, if you are a player that is ready to continue your development, work with the highest level of coaches, play with and against top talent, and truly want to give yourself the best opportunity to play college basketball then Select is the right fit for you.

Our players benefit tremendously from the variety of coaches that lead our teams and the reputation that our program has developed with college coaches over the last 25+ years. Playing for a Select team means that you will be developing your game. Colleges are considering you for their rosters because they know what they will be getting in a Select player.

Choosing a club program for travel basketball can be tough. To watch a video that describes what we do and why we do it, click here .

Become a coach, gryphon gear, testimonials.

I would not send this email if I did not think the world of Randy and his ability to make your son better at the game of basketball. He is easily one of, if not THE, best players I have ever coached and more importantly he is a far better human being. He is a tremendous role model and would be a great influence on your son both athletically and personally. It is without any reservation that I recommend his services for anyone looking for a personal trainer this pre-season.

An excellent program that is

An excellent program that is very well run and focuses on the fundamentals of basketball. Coaches are positive role models for the kids. I highly recommend Gryphon!

Coach Randy and the entire

Coach Randy and the entire Gryphons team/staff were absolutely fantastic with the girls (3-4 graders). They all worked efficiently and gave each player significant one on one coaching. talked directly to The staff were knowledgeable of the game. What a great program this is. Our 4th grader excelled with Coach Randy and staff which led her to learning skilled drills. Will do it all over again. Seabrooks Family. #5

We had the best experience

We had the best experience with Randy and all of his coaches this Spring season. Right from the first tryout we could tell he was the coach for my 3rd grade daughter.

I saw a great quote that said a great coach is hard to find and impossible to forget.

Glad we found Coach Randy and his Gryphons Program!

Best Program in Bergen County Gryphon Basketball is the best youth basketball program in the area. The Gryphon’s culture challenges players yet supports their efforts as they learn. It’s easy to see that Coach Randy has both an education background and a love of basketball as teaching is prioritized over winning. My daughter’s confidence and skills improved significantly last season as practices were organized, competitive, fast-paced, and fun. As a parent, the flexible practice options made scheduling easy, and the clear, frequent communication of upcoming events ensured there were no last minute surprises. Gryphon Basketball is the best.

Randy’s training and clinics have been extremely beneficial for my daughters. He develops the ‘whole player’ which has led both of them to enhanced basketball confidence and achievement. From shooting form and passing to dribbling and overall physical agility/performance, working with Randy is making a very positive impact and they are more confident and capable players as a result. My girls look forward to their training sessions and we will continue to utilize his expertise to further develop their skills. We highly recommend Randy and Gryphon to other players and parents.

Randy and his colleagues are great in teaching these kids… Randy has always been a good coach from my oldest daughter to now my youngest daughter… he has the patience of a saint… he is very good to the kids but firm, he will make them follow him to do drills and basketball skills in a nice way whatever they have to do or accomplish… also I like the fact that we have extra training with Coach Rob for strength,  speed and agility… overall I would really recommend kids to join Gryphon Basketball.

My third grade son just played his first season with Coaches Randy and Danny and I have been so incredibly impressed with the Gryphon program. They are patient, compassionate yet competitive coaches who know how to connect with young kids and get the best out of them to help them learn and grow on the court. I can’t say enough about the positive atmosphere that Randy has created. From the beginning to the end of the season my son had a smile on his face and became a better player. You can’t ask for anything more.

I can’t begin to thank you enough for the opportunity to have my daughter play on your team. Personally, I saw so much growth apart from skills and it made me so happy. I absolutely love to watch her play and watch the game in general so I am looking forward to her continuing  to grow in your club. You have an incredible way about yourself and I couldn’t have been happier with you and Coach Danny leading her this season.

My daughter played on a Gryphon’s Team this Spring, attended a camp over the summer, and played on a Gryphon’s team this Fall.  She had a lot of fun and her basketball skills improved greatly. She has been coached by Randy , Mike, Sara, and Danny; all of the them were extremely positive and excellent teachers of the game.  I especially like that fact that Gryphon’s program does not interfere with our town winter travel season.  I highly recommend the Gryphon program to other families!

Our daughter recently wrapped up her first season playing for Coach Randy and the Gryphons on the 4th/5th grade team. At first she was skeptical to play for an AAU team, but coach did a great job of getting the players from different towns to become comfortable playing together. He rarely misses a teaching moment when it’s needed during practices and games. His patience, encouragement, and leadership with the players are greatly appreciated.

Overall her first season on the team has been rewarding, as she has made new friends, and he coached the team to the playoffs. She is looking forward to a new season with the Gryphons. Thank you Coach Randy!

Randy DeFeo possesses outstanding knowledge of the game of basketball.  He excelled as a player at Ridgewood High School where he led his team to a state championship (2004-2005.)  He also succeeded as a point guard at the Division III level at Bowdoin College.  His work ethic and expertise serve him well as a coach at the high school level and as an instructor at the youth levels.  Randy has an energy and passion for the game that is contagious amongst the players he coaches.  His attention to detail and his ability to communicate effectively makes him an outstanding candidate for one on one coaching for boys and girls.  Coach DeFeo conducts thorough, challenging work-outs that encapsulate all areas of the game. Players of all ages will improve their fundamentals and raise their level of play under his guidance.  I highly recommend Randy as a high quality instructor of the game of basketball.

Our middle school aged son has improved dramatically due to his work with Coach Randy.   Training with Randy has been a great supplement to team practices and games and has led to much better shooting, ball handling and footwork.  Also, our son enjoys the workouts.  The drills are appropriately challenging but fun at the same time.  Perhaps most importantly, Randy has bonded with our son and instilled a sense of confidence that has had an even greater impact than improved on the court skills.

Randy has been coaching my daughter in basketball for about a year now.  He has a keen sense of how to get the most out of her, and the other girls on the team, yet he maintains a respectful manner and tone in his approach.  No crazy yelling or screaming.  This is something that you quickly realize is not common as the girls play against other teams/towns.  As a result of this approach, my daughter has expressed an interest in getting better and working on her game.  We signed her up for 5 workouts with Randy and wow, the results are amazing!  Randy has a great ability to draw out her competitive nature and keep her working hard toward improving herself.  Everything has been enhanced from her basketball skills to her confidence as she continues to develop her game.  The results on the court are great and a lot of fun to watch too!  I highly recommend Randy to anyone who has the desire to improve their basketball skills.

Randy is a patient and knowledgeable teacher who strikes an effective balance of seriousness and fun in his instruction — he creates a very positive learning environment. Our 14 year old daughter and 10 year old son (both travel players) have found his advice and techniques to be easy to understand, retain and implement into their games.  Both have improved and grown more confident under Randy’s guidance and they (and we) can see very practical results from the sessions — a very positive experience all around.

I’m a guy who has played basketball at the college level and spent many long hours in various camps, clinics, workouts and leagues, so I can say with first-hand experience that Randy ‘gets it’. He understands what it takes to go from good to great: It’s about taking the fundamentals seriously. It’s about always practicing with extreme repetition at full game speed. And most importantly, he understands that it’s about pushing kids outside their comfort zone, but always with a healthy dose of encouragement. I’ve seen a big improvement in my twin daughters’ confidence and skill levels.

As a Sports Physician I know the importance of communication to an athlete. Randy DeFeo excels at this quality. His approach involves the athlete becoming involved in his own improvement. This is seen in the plan that he and the player discuss before each session. They talk about situations in which they feel a need for improvement and Randy cleverly designs repetitive drills to develop muscle memory. My son Kyle has greatly benefited from his time with Randy and I would recommend him without hesitation.

I’ve known Randy and his family since he was a sophomore at Ridgewood High School. He has always been a class act – the kind of person I would want my kids learning from and emulating. My freshman daughter is excited to be a part of Gryphon Basketball. I also find the individual and small group lessons that Randy gives to be so much more productive than the large, informal “group clinics” that other groups offer.

I sent my son Shane to work with Randy to prepare for his High School tryouts. Randy worked Shane hard, but in a fun way that made him want to keep coming back. He improved his shooting form as well as his handling skills, but most importantly he went into tryouts with a high level of confidence that he would be successful. I would highly recommend Randy to all players who are looking to take their game to the next level.

My son Patrick had the chance to workout with Randy prior to the current basketball season. Randy did great job of reinforcing the fundamentals of the game, gave “at home” drills to reinforce what he was teaching during the workouts and was a very positive influence during the entire process. Randy is a great teacher, motivator and I highly recommend him if you would like to help your child bring their b-ball game to the next level.

“For those of you that know Randy, he is passionate, knowledgeable, and very positive. He has a genuine interest in helping our players develop and he will be very hands-on with these teams.

The Pros and Cons of Travel Basketball

Those who invest their summers on travel teams are driven by the desire to play collegiate basketball.

The summer travel tour has evolved into the ideal platform for guys and girls looking for experience outside of their high school gymnasium. It’s where coaches at the next stage are intrigued, and scholarship offers are offered.

Families invest their hard-earned cash in traveling to and from competitions in order to gain such exposure.

Is it, however, worthwhile?

Craig Jackson, the program coordinator of a girls’ travel basketball program, stated, “I feel it’s beginning to get out of hand. Now you have coaches and competitions every weekend”.

“It’s more about college recognition and promotion than anything else, and getting your team into such tournaments is extremely costly and drains the pocket. The tournament directors will undoubtedly inform you of who will be present. Which schools have which mentors.”

The price of fame

Andrew Bergim, Peter Bergim’s son, is a student at Lincoln High School, where he has been a member of the varsity basketball team since he was in eighth grade. Andrew is also in his fourth season as a quarterback starter for the sporting club.

When it comes to their kid’s ability and potential, the senior Bergim advises parents to remain practical.

“How far you want your child to go is entirely up to you.” The true best players must be seen. “The greater the player, the more travel is worthwhile,” he explained. “I believe all parents believe their child is an exceptional player, but then you go to an exclusive event, lose by 35 points, and your child hardly even plays. It’s time to wake up.”

Back to basics

Many summer teams’ shoot-first, pass-second attitude has been accused of eroding fundamentals and developing bad basketball habits, which are typically apparent after players are back to their high school teams.

Ryan Meyer, a second-year girls’ trainer who hasn’t been enticed to lead a summer travel team, recognizes the benefits and drawbacks.

“It’s a wonderful recruitment tool for me, a great opportunity and platform for students to receive exposure, and a great opportunity for college coaches to assess,” he added.

“However, (high) school ball may sometimes provide the coach a more accurate image of how they’ll work within their squad once they’ve pledged. They’ll have a better sense of how they get along with their colleagues and the team organization.”

New friends, new foes

Travel basketball is great at getting players out of their comfort bubble so they may improve as players and individuals.

Kate Bunting, a senior guard for Whiteland, is a summer rookie. Bunting entered her debut travel basketball team during her freshman and sophomore years, unlike the majority of the athletes she sees in practices and games.

Bunting wishes she had begun sooner, but she is content with the present.

“I just adore traveling basketball. It’s exciting to meet new girls, establish new friends, and travel to new locations,” Bunting added. “About a week before the Derby, I was in Frankfort, and we watched so many fireworks.” It was incredible.

Natick Travel Basketball

Travel Basketball

Travel basketball overview.

Travel basketball is the cornerstone program for NTB. We offer travel basketball teams for boys and girls in grades 4-8 each winter. Teams are formed based on tryouts for each grade and gender, which are typically held in September and October each fall. There are typically two or three teams for each grade and gender depending on the number of players and talent in each grade.

A summary of the tryout process is set out below:

  • Prospective players register for tryouts online. Tryouts are free and families only make payment once teams are formed.
  • Players attend all scheduled tryouts.
  • Teams are selected and players notified. There are two to three teams chosen for each grade. Players that are not placed on a travel team roster will have the opportunity to be placed on an intramural team roster.
  • After teams are made, coaches will be interviewed and named.
  • NTB teams participate in the Metrowest Basketball League. Metrowest Basketball league requirements state that players must play with grade level peers and may not play down a year, regardless of age.

NTB travel players are expected to make basketball their primary winter sport.  Each NTB travel team will have 2 practices and 1 game each week. Games are generally held on Sundays in Natick or surrounding towns.  Players are generally expected to attend each practice and game.

For more information on the travel basketball season please see the Frequently Asked Questions page or email [email protected] .

About The Club

Description.

SoCal Elite’s Club Basketball Program is for those players who have progressed beyond the SoCal Elite Recreational Leagues or other City Leagues. Club Basketball is the best place to compete against the best youth basketball players and teams in the area. The SoCal ‘Elite’ will travel and play the top youth level teams in the area as well as some teams from outside the area.

Please understand that this is a high level of commitment and tournament weekends will take up most of the weekend. This is, however, the program for those players who want to be challenged and want to play High School basketball or beyond. SoCal Elite’s teams are formed through tryouts and feature non-parent professional coaches. There will be a full team tryout in September and additional tryouts, depending on how many players we need to add per season.

Each team consists of 10 players and there are two teams per grade level. The club basketball year is broken up into three seasons: Spring/Summer (April – July), Fall (September – December) and Winter (January – March). We expect that if you choose to play, you are fully committed to that season and expected to travel outside of the city to play in weekend tournaments and/or leagues. Most tournaments will be in Orange County, CA but this past year featured tournaments in Los Angeles, Riverside, San Diego & Las Vegas.

We do not expect a year-long commitment, but we do expect a season commitment. For example, if you want to play club basketball and baseball, then you could play the first two seasons and opt out of the third season to go play baseball. All players and parents must sign a commitment contract before being selected on a team. We expect players and families to have a commitment to the team for the duration of the season.

Note: Once teams are formed, you will have to wait for someone to leave to take someone’s spot. There are no refunds and once you are on a team, you are on the team for that entire season.

  • (2) indoor team practices per week.
  • Paid professional coach for all practices & games.
  • (1) or (2) club tournaments per month.
  • Optional weekly academy training on Tues-Wed-Thurs, 5 PM or 6 PM.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why should my child play in SoCal Elite's Club basketball program?

SoCal Elite’s  Club Basketball teams are a great opportunity for your child to play against the top competition in Southern California. This exposure to the best competition is paramount to a players’ improvement on a grander stage. Our club teams play in 1-2 tournaments per month and practice three times per week in indoor gymnasiums. Playing on a SoCal Elite Club team is a great way to develop camaraderie with fellow teammates, all while playing against top-notch competition. Unique to SoCal Elite, we will assist you with any financial difficulties you have; our main focus is to make sure that those players who CAN play at the club level, DO play at the club level.

How do SoCal Elite's Club basketball teams work?

SoCal Elite ’s club basketball teams have two (2) team practices with their head coach per week. In addition to two team practices per week, club players will also have access to weekly fundamental training at The Academy with SoCal Elite trainers. This system is designed to help your child improve as a basketball player and develop chemistry with teammates, all while allowing them to make time for other obligations. In addition, there is a mandatory ‘open gym clinic’ every Friday night for additional practice before the weekend.

How long is the Club season?

The full Club year runs from mid-September to mid-August and is divided into three seasons: Fall, Winter and Spring/Summer. Each season runs 3-4 months.

How many days will my son/daughter have practice?

Each week there are two 90-minute team practices, with a one-hour clinic practice on Fridays.

How many players are on a team?

There are 8-10 players on each team at all grade levels. In cases where we have enough at a grade level to form two teams, there will be a Black and a Grey team. Players will be placed accordingly at the coaches’ discretion.

How many coaches are involved with each team?

Each team will have a Head Coach. Friday clinics will be run by each and every one of our team coaches on a rotational schedule.

Will my son/daughter have guaranteed playing time?

Club basketball is different from Recreational League basketball in that there is no guaranteed playing time for any player. Coaches will do their best to get every player in the game, but some players will play more than others.

How many tournaments do you play in and how often?

We play in two tournaments per month. Most tournaments will have games on both a Saturday and Sunday. Some will be over holiday weekends with play over three days.

How soon in advance will we know the game times for a tournament?

We realize that every family has schedules outside of basketball and like to plan their weekend in advance. However, tournament schedules in Club basketball are typically not set until the Thursday night before a tournament. Schedules are set by the tournament organizers and not by us, unless it is a SoCal Elite-sponsored event. We send out schedules as soon as we get them to give our families as much notice as we can. Please know that some scheduled dates can/will change due to changes set by the tournament host which are out of our control.

Do you play in out-of-town tournaments that require hotel stay?

Most of our tournaments will be local. However, we will play in 2-3 out of town tournaments in Santa Barbara, San Diego and Las Vegas. These are scheduled during the Spring and Summer where travel does not interfere with school schedules. Hotel stay is recommended.

Do tournaments cost extra?

Tournament fees are calculated at the beginning of each season and are due with Club fees. However, every tournament charges an entry fee for spectators. Parents, grandparents, siblings, etc. will pay a daily fee and sometimes a parking fee for each car. The fee is set by the tournament host and is not controlled by SoCal Elite.

Can we drop out if it's not for us?

We ask that every player make a commitment they plan to honor for the entire season. Pulling out of the program mid-season is disruptive to the program and the team process. After one season ends and before the next one begins, each player will be asked to recommit for that upcoming season. This would be the point at which a player can move on to pursue other interests if he/she so chooses.

What is AAU Basketball? And why do we need an AAU membership?

AAU basketball is the largest governing body of club basketball in the country. While not all tournaments are AAU sanctioned events, we will be participating in several throughout the year. We require that all coaches and players purchase the extended AB membership which not only allows us to play in AAU events, but also gives everyone insurance in any of our events. The membership is valid until September 1st of the calendar year regardless of purchase date.

What does Club basketball cost?

Club basketball has a higher cost than recreational basketball. We offer a cheaper pay-all-up-front option or a two-pay option. Understand that we have to pay for the following: Gym rent for all practices, coaches, web management, and tournaments, which can add up when it is a small group. For a typical 4-month season, the cost is around $900 per player, which includes 7-8 tournaments and all practices and associated fees.

Are uniforms and other gear included in the cost?

Uniforms are separate and not included in the fee as most players are returning. We only require players to purchase a new uniform if they do not have a current SoCal Elite club uniform.

What happens next after my son/daughter makes the team?

If your son/daughter makes a team, SoCal Elite will contact you and set up a team meeting to introduce your entire team and answer any questions you may have. This will be done within the first week of practice. We will announce teams no later than 48 hours after the final tryout.

PROGRAM INFORMATION

Program Emphasis/Expectations:

The Travel Basketball travel teams are devoted to developing the skills of individual players with the collective goal of team success. Though success cannot always be measured by wins and losses, it is expected that the coaches and players will try to be competitive in all tournaments and games. Though competing is one aspect of the program, Halftime Sports expects that all players, coaches, and Halftime Sports parents, fans, neighbors demonstrate the highest level of sportsmanship always. It is our belief that a competitive program can be a positive experience for young people, especially when combined with a proper perspective that promotes character building and development.

Tournament Schedule: https://www.halftimesports.net/tournaments-2/

(*) Games are at Centennial High School, Chattahoochee High School, Creekview High School, Denmark High School, Etowah High School, Mill Springs Academy, Marietta Salvation Army, Oglethorpe University, Redline Athletics (Forsyth), Roswell High School, Suwanee Sports Academy, LakePoint Sports Complex, etc. Note: Location depends on the tournament

Team Practice: Team practice includes two (2) 90-minute practices a week.

Playing Time: While Halftime Sports coaches strive to give all players adequate playing time, playing time is not guaranteed in the Travel Basketball travel program. The amount of playing time is determined by the coaching staff and is based on attendance at practice, overall performance, attitude, and the ability to comply with team rules and regulations. It is our belief that all members of the roster are equally important and play a vital role in the team’s success. Players should expect to be treated equally, but this does not guarantee that playing time is equal.

Refund Policy: No refunds are granted in the event a player discontinues participation during the season. If a player becomes injured, quits, or is removed from the team for inability to comply with team rules, or otherwise chooses to end participation, he/she will not be entitled to any refund. Monies for registration go towards purchasing uniforms, shirts, tournaments, coaches’ stipends, tournament awards, and more, thus NO REFUNDS .  Registration can go towards another program within our Halftime Sports umbrella and properties.

TRAVEL BASKETBALL FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQs):

Because joining the Halftime Sports Travel Basketball program is a large financial and time commitment, it is important to have all your questions answered prior to registering for tryouts. Please do not hesitate to contact our offices at [email protected] with any questions.

Q: Which team is my son/daughter trying out for? A: Travel Basketball teams are based on grade level and age. Some players may be asked to play up a grade based on skill.

Q: What if my child cannot attend all tryout sessions? A: Notification to the Office needs to be made immediately if a player cannot attend a tryout session and would still like to be considered for a team. The office will work with the parent to determine if the player should attend another tryout session.

Q: How many tryouts are there? A: Tryouts consist of two 60-minute tryout sessions. Players are expected to attend both tryouts.

Q: Where are tryouts held? A: Mill Springs Academy

Q: When are tryouts? A: See the above information

Q: Fees for tryouts? A: Tryouts cost $10

Q: How do you evaluate players to ensure each player gets a fair tryout? A: Players are put through basic basketball drills to evaluate his/her work ethic, hustle, attitude, shooting, passing, dribbling, rebounding, and defensive skills. Hard work, hustle, and a good attitude are contributing factors in team selection. Even if a player has a difficult session and his/her shooting or game is “off” that session, other factors are still considered. All players are put through the same drills to ensure that the tryout process is fair.

Q: What experience should a player have before trying out for Halftime Sports Travel Basketball team? A: Players can have wide variety of basketball experience. It is important to remember because we are drawing from multiple communities (Roswell, Alpharetta, Milton, Johns Creek, Cumming), Travel teams are more competitive than most recreational or middle school teams.

Q: My child plays another sport (baseball, soccer, etc.) – would he/she be able to play Travel Basketball, too? A: Yes, your child can still play Travel Basketball. Halftime Sports Travel teams have practice during the week. Games and tournaments are typically on weekends (some tournaments start on Friday evenings).

Q: How is Travel Basketball different from other programs or leagues? A: The Travel Basketball program is much more competitive than recreational or local select leagues because it involves athletes from different communities playing on the same team, resulting in a better talent pool. Recreational leagues, on the other hand, consist of teams from one town or school, which means a smaller pool and less competition for team selection. The Travel Basketball program is also a bigger time commitment with practices during the week and games and tournaments on the weekends. It is also important to keep in mind that players who are unable to attend practice will also miss out on understanding what was covered in practice (for example, learning a play). Therefore, missed practices may have a significant impact on playing time.

Q: Is playing time guaranteed if my child makes a team? A: Unlike some programs, TRAVEL BASKETBALL  DOES NOT GUARANTEE playing time for any player. Coaches must weigh many factors to determine which players will start and who will be subbed in at every game. Coaches generally do not keep track of individual player’s playing time. If at any time you are concerned about your child’s playing time, please discuss this with the coach away from the event, never immediately after the game. Please keep in mind the broader goals of the program before taking issue with any player’s playing time.

Q: Who selects the players that make a team? A: Halftime Sports coaching staff selects players based on a scoring system and observation.

Q: My child was not selected to a team, but I believe my child is a better player than players who did make the team. What can I do? A: Deciding who makes each team is not an exact science. Halftime Sports staff will do their best to identify the top players. It is important to remember that all teams need different kinds of players to be successful. If you feel strongly that your child should have been selected to a team, contact Coach Nehemiah Solomon at [email protected] or Coach Kim Coleman @ [email protected] .

Q: My son or daughter is very upset over not making a team; what should I say to him or her? A: We understand that not getting selected to a team is a heartbreaking experience for any child. It is important that you explain to your child that giving his/her best effort is most important. You can share that many good players have not been selected to a team at one time or another. Players should evaluate the areas in which they need improvement and work to improve their overall skills.

Q: My child has made the team, now what? A: You will receive an email from Halftime Sports welcoming you to the team and specific instructions on what happens next. Parent confirmation occurs by sending an email of acceptance to [email protected] . A received payment means confirmation into the program. Parents must attend the Halftime Sports Parent Meeting, which explains the overall program objectives and expectations.

Q: When are the dates of the Travel Basketball season? A: The Travel Basketball season runs from March 2024 through late July 2024.

Q: How many tournaments are there? A: Halftime Sports registers for 7-9 tournaments throughout the Travel Basketball Regular season.

What is TRAVEL Basketball? (everything you need to know)

Travel basketball is a competitive basketball program for youth of all ages who want to compete at a higher level. Travel teams consist of talented players who typically “travel” to other cities and states to compete in weekend tournaments . Playing travel basketball allows youth basketball players and teams an opportunity to develop their skills and play against more experienced teams.

Travel basketball is commonly referred to as “club” or AAU basketball. If you are asking the question, “what is travel basketball” then you or your basketball player are likely considering joining a team and need more helpful information. If this is you, please keep reading for a deeper dive into travel basketball.

In this article, I am going to discuss the types of travel basketball teams, benefits of travel basketball and types of tournaments. This information will help you better understand what travel basketball is all about!

Types of Travel Basketball Teams:

Benefits of travel basketball:, recreational leagues-, school based basketball, local and regional tournaments:, showcase tournaments:, invitational tournaments:, national championship tournaments:, international tournaments:, college exposure tournaments:, amateur athletic union (aau):, united states specialty sports association (usssa):, national travel basketball association (ntba):, youth basketball of america (yboa):, independent tournament organizers:, conclusion:.

Anybody can start a travel basketball team. Well, almost anybody! There are five different types of travel basketball teams, in my opinion. They are private teams, recreational offshoots, community/city recreational offshoots, competitive teams and sponsored teams.  If you are interested in starting a travel basketball team, please check out my article on starting your very own travel team.

  • Single teams- These teams are typically started by a coach who has a group of players interested in competing at a higher level. The players are likely a group of kids that enjoy playing together and always try to get on the same recreation team but because of drafting rules have a difficult time. They will likely only have one team.
  • Private recreation teams- These are teams created by individual recreational league directors. They establish these teams to give their more elite players an opportunity to compete at a higher level. Elite teams also help market their recreation leagues. These types of travel basketball teams will have multiple teams likely representing each grade. These types of travel teams may have different levels of teams in the same grade. For example, they may have an A team and a B team (Division I and II). The coaches are typically volunteers.
  • Community/city recreation teams- These are teams created by the city as offshoots to their recreational league. This is similar to the private teams but operated by the community/city leaders of the individual basketball program. These types of travel basketball teams will have multiple teams likely representing each grade. These travel teams may also have different levels of teams in the same grade. The coaches on these teams are likely volunteers. Some of which are trying to gain experience for coaching positions.
  • Competitive teams- These teams are typically created for the purpose of competing at all of the major basketball tournaments and are seeking the best competition. They are typically private but can also be local community teams as well. The coaches on these teams can be paid or volunteers. These teams are recruiting talented basketball players with a strong passion for the game.
  • Sponsored teams- These are teams sponsored by well known sports companies such as Adidas and Nike. These teams typically recruit the best basketball players. Players can travel significant distances to be on these teams. The coaches are typically paid but can also be volunteers with significant experience. These teams travel to exposure tournaments and have multiple teams in various grades.
  • Higher Level of Competition : Playing on a travel basketball team gives players the opportunity to compete at a higher level against top-tier opponents. The games are more challenging than recreational leagues and it’s exposure can significantly elevate one’s basketball skills and knowledge.
  • Skill Development: The higher level of competition and frequent practice helps players build their skills and basketball IQ, fosters teamwork and overall performance.
  • Exposure and College Opportunities: Travel basketball tournaments attract college recruiters, scouts, and coaches who are seeking talented players for their programs. Participating in travel basketball can increase players’ visibility and provide opportunities for scholarships and collegiate basketball careers.
  • Teamwork and Camaraderie : Being part of a travel basketball team builds a sense of camaraderie and teamwork. Players develop strong bonds as they train, travel, and compete together, building lifelong friendships and valuable life skills.
  • Traveling and Expenses: As the name suggests, travel basketball involves traveling to various tournament locations, often requiring overnight stays. Players and their families are responsible for covering travel expenses, including transportation, accommodations, and meals. To give you a better idea of how much travel ball costs please check out this article on costs associated with travel basketball.

How Is Travel Basketball Different?:

“Rec” leagues are designed for fun and a less competitive basketball experience. These are typically the first level of basketball for most players. Travel basketball, on the other hand, caters to athletes who are committed to more intense competition and skill development. Another difference is that recreation league games will be played in local gyms in your city while travel games will more likely be played in another city or state and the competition will be at a higher level.

School-based basketball includes players that attend that specific school. The competition is essentially fixed for the most part unless the coach organizes scrimmages with other teams from outside of the area. Travel basketball can include players from various different schools and different cities. There are not typically any rules governing where a student lives.

Types of Tournaments:

Travel basketball tournaments are the backbone of the competitive landscape of travel basketball. This is where teams go to showcase their talent. These tournaments are typically an entire weekend and can be longer. There can be anywhere from four or more teams competing in any given tournament.

Tournaments start out in pool play and then teams advance to the championship games. Teams will typically be guaranteed three games but can play more depending on their record. Let’s explore some of the different types of tournaments played in travel basketball.

Local and regional tournaments are the most common types of tournaments. These are the most common types of tournaments and attract teams from nearby cities or states. They offer teams the opportunity to compete within a geographic area and are often organized by local basketball associations, AAU programs, or independent organizers.

Showcase tournaments are designed to provide high-level competition and exposure for teams and individual players. These events often feature teams from different regions, drawing college recruiters, scouts, and coaches who are seeking talented players for their programs. Showcase tournaments are held in popular basketball destinations and showcase venues, attracting a wide range of talent and providing a platform for players to display their skills on a larger stage.

Invitational tournaments are prestigious events that invite top-tier teams to compete. These tournaments typically handpick teams based on their reputation, performance, or ranking. Invitational tournaments may have strict entry criteria and limited slots, ensuring that only the best teams from different regions participate. The level of competition in these tournaments is exceptionally high, with teams battling it out for recognition and championships.

National championship tournaments are the pinnacle of travel basketball competition. These tournaments bring together the top-ranked teams from different regions to compete for the national title. They are organized by various governing bodies and associations, such as the AAU (Amateur Athletic Union) or USSSA (United States Specialty Sports Association). National championship tournaments attract widespread attention and media coverage, with college recruiters closely monitoring the performances of players and teams.

In addition to domestic competitions, travel basketball teams may also have the opportunity to participate in international tournaments. These tournaments bring teams from different countries together, promoting cultural exchange and showcasing basketball talent on a global scale. International tournaments offer a unique experience, allowing players to compete against foreign opponents, learn different playing styles, and broaden their perspectives on the sport.

College exposure tournaments are specifically designed to provide players with exposure to college coaches, recruiters, and scouts. These tournaments are strategically organized to attract college representatives, and teams and players participate with the goal of capturing the attention of college programs. College exposure tournaments often include showcase games, skills competitions, and networking opportunities, allowing players to make a lasting impression on college decision-makers.

Sanctioned Travel Basketball Organizations:

It’s important to note that the specific tournaments available in travel basketball can vary based on the region, governing bodies, and local basketball associations. The tournament landscape is dynamic, with new events emerging and existing ones evolving over time. Coaches, teams, and players stay updated on tournament schedules, rankings, and eligibility criteria to ensure their participation in the most suitable competitions for their goals and aspirations in travel basketball.

Travel basketball tournaments are organized by various organizations that specialize in promoting and facilitating competitive basketball events. These organizations play a crucial role in creating opportunities for teams and players to showcase their skills, gain exposure, and compete at high levels. Let’s explore some of the prominent organizations that host travel basketball tournaments.

The AAU is one of the most well-known and established organizations in youth sports, including basketball. It offers a comprehensive program for travel basketball teams and organizes a wide range of tournaments at the local, regional, and national levels. The AAU hosts both invitational tournaments and national championships, providing opportunities for teams to compete against top-tier competition and gain exposure to college recruiters.

The USSSA is a prominent organization that organizes travel basketball tournaments for various age groups and skill levels. They offer a comprehensive calendar of events, including local and regional tournaments, state championships, and national tournaments. The USSSA provides a platform for teams to compete at a high level and potentially earn bids to national championship tournaments.

The NTBA focuses on organizing competitive travel basketball tournaments for boys and girls across the United States. They host events throughout the year, including regional championships and national tournaments. The NTBA aims to provide a well-structured and fair environment for teams to showcase their talents and compete against top competition.

YBOA is a national organization that promotes youth basketball and hosts travel basketball tournaments across the country. They offer tournaments for different age groups and divisions, including regional and national championships. YBOA emphasizes fair play, sportsmanship, and player development, creating opportunities for teams to compete in a positive and competitive environment.

HoopSeen is an organization that focuses on organizing basketball events and showcases, including travel basketball tournaments. They provide platforms for teams and players to gain exposure, compete against top competition, and attract the attention of college recruiters. HoopSeen hosts tournaments at various locations and offers a comprehensive scouting and ranking system for participating teams.

In addition to established organizations, independent tournament organizers play a significant role in hosting travel basketball tournaments. These organizers may focus on specific regions, age groups, or competitive levels. They provide opportunities for teams to compete locally or travel to different destinations for high-quality tournaments. Independent tournament organizers often collaborate with local basketball associations, schools, or community centers to facilitate their events.

Travel basketball is a program designed to foster a more competitive experience for youth ballers by offering sanctioned tournaments against teams from other cities and states. This program is helpful for players because it allows them exposure to basketball situations they may have not experienced before increasing their basketball IQ. In this article, we discussed the different types of travel ball teams, benefits of travel ball, and types of tournaments. Hopefully, you have a little more information to answer the question, what is travel basketball?

Travel Basketball USA

Travel Basketball USA

Pursuing greatness all year long, 10 steps to start a travel basketball team.

As a player or parent of a player, the end of the basketball season is here. You’ve searched social media and the local landscape looking for opportunities to continue playing basketball after the season. You’ve asked your coach or neighbors where you might find a travel basketball team to join, but your search has returned zero results.

All too often, players who want to continue to build their skills and competition level are stuck in a similar position. With some exceptions, travel basketball teams can play throughout the year all across the country. That means it’s never too late to join in on the fun.

When your player cannot find a suitable travel organization to join, they are most likely not alone. He or she is perhaps one of several players in your area searching for a basketball team. Now, it’s time to consider creating your own travel group.

How do you start a travel basketball team? While there are many different ways these organizations come to life, most groups follow this 10-step process to create a travel basketball team for their players.

travel basketball team near me

1. Find a Coach

While this may seem like an obvious first choice, finding a coach is often the most-important step toward building a travel basketball team. Your coach is the person who will be working hand-in-hand with your players throughout the season and will determine (to some extent) how successful and enjoyable your travel basketball team’s experience will be.

Finding a good coach can be difficult. Start-up programs usually look to former local players that may not have coaching experience to serve as coaches. This is a great place to start; even if the individuals you approach do not accept the responsibility, they may refer you to other coaches who would be interested and available.

Before approaching individuals about coaching, be prepared to discuss payment. Travel basketball coaches do not become rich, but some compensation will help off-set this individual’s expenses. Unpaid volunteer coaches often spend hundreds or thousands of dollars out of their own pockets in driving to and from practices or tournaments, just as an example.

Whether you’ve decided to pay the coach or not, coaches must know they will be giving a lot of time and energy toward this endeavor that will be uncompensated. Finding a reliable person with an understanding family and/or job to take on this responsibility can be a long process, making the coach selection the best first step in building a travel basketball team.

2. Recruit Teammates

Unless your player is bringing his or her entire regular-season team with them, the coach will need to find players to participate for the upcoming travel basketball schedule. Having the coach involved in this process will help him or her identify what players should be included on the team as well as how many players should be on the roster.

Recruiting teammates for a travel basketball team is a mixture of skill and luck. Depending on the age, the coach can host a tryout over a one- or two-day period to solicit the players from the community. Posting the tryouts on community bulletin boards, on social media, and through other media like a local newspaper will help spread the word.

If the players are currently playing for a state-sanctioned sport – like middle or high school basketball – the coach should review the local state guidelines pertaining to player recruitment during the regular or post-season. If permissible, he or she may choose to visit other nearby schools to see what talented players would also be available for a travel basketball team.

3. Determine the Schedule

This step toward creating a basketball team is often one you’ll revisit multiple times during the travel season. However, putting together a tentative schedule as early as possible will help both the team organizer and coach in recruiting players. Plus, this is often one of the first questions parents will ask to determine how much travel will be expected.

Schedules are tentative for multiple reasons. Unless you’re team is an elite squad, tournaments that your travel basketball organization will participate in could have vacancies in your team’s specific age group. Almost all tournaments for development and competitive squads struggle to attract teams for every age group, and a replacement tournament is often necessary to fill gaps in the team’s travel schedule.

Further, other tournaments could spring up that would be closer to home or better-suited for your talent level. Having the flexibility to make changes to your travel team’s schedule is important to provide the best competition level possible. Finding tournaments with similar talent levels is important to keep your team’s morale high during the season.

The best spot to search for tournaments is in a Facebook group for travel basketball teams. Searching Facebook for “travel basketball in ( your state name )” is an excellent starting point. Often, tournaments will post months in advance to help potential teams pencil in their tournament for these dates.

Regardless, setting a tentative schedule early for your travel basketball team is important for the next step …

4. Set the Price

Beyond the extent of travel, parents of potential’s players will almost assuredly ask how much money will it cost to participate on the travel team. This is the fee your travel organization should establish to off-set uniform costs as well as tournament fees, facility rent expenses, and/or coach’s reimbursement funds (for our comprehensive guide on how to price your travel team’s expenses, click here ).

From a parent’s perspective, it’s easy to see why the expected price is at the forefront. In addition to the team fee, parents will incur significant expenses associated with travel to and from competitions. A single tournament, for example, could easily cost a family of four over $500 when the price of a hotel stay, dining, fuel and tournament admission fees are taken into account.

Setting the travel tournament team fees either too high or too low will hurt your team’s ability to recruit players. High-priced travel basketball organizations are often elite squads looking to play against some of the best competition in their region. These squads impose higher fees for multiple reasons, including buying uniform packages, renting practice facilities, and paying a coach’s fees to name a few.

Conversely, setting the price too low can also be problematic. The adage that you get what you pay for is a parent’s potential perception of the program. Low-priced fees for a travel basketball squad can be seen as inferior products to higher-priced counterparts, pushing some parents toward the supposed premium option.

Pricing the travel team fee too low is also a problem in terms of player retention and attention. Parents who spend $500-2,000 for team fees are more apt to ensure their child’s participation in every practice and tournament. To the contrary, travel organizations with cheaper team fees sometimes struggle with their player’s commitment, especially for practice.

5. Secure a Gym

On paper, this step seems to be one of the easiest in forming a travel basketball team. In reality, this can be one of the most troublesome steps you’ll face in organizing your squad.

If you look around your neighborhood, the chances of finding multiple gyms are high. Almost every middle and high school in the area will have one to two gyms inside. Additionally, some communities offer recreation centers with indoor basketball facilities. You can also find gymnasiums at churches or even at stand-alone exercise facilities.

Having access to multiple gyms is a smart practice for travel basketball teams. Often, gyms are booked in advance for multiple days or weeks at a time to host other events. To avoid missing practice for an entire week, the coach or team organizer should look for back-up locations to serve the basketball team’s practice needs.

Some gym owners will require your travel squad to carry accident insurance in the event one or more of your players are injured while at the gym. Travel basketball teams can obtain liability insurance online from multiple providers, giving both the organization and gym owners peace of mind if the unexpected happens. Policies start at just over $100 for the entire season and offer practice or competition accident insurance to cover coaches, certain support staff members and players.

6. Create a Practice Schedule

From experience, creating a practice schedule for when your travel basketball team will conduct workouts can be a nightmare. This can be problematic for multiple reasons, and coaches should address this item soon after securing the practice location.

The biggest problem with crafting a practice schedule is attempting to find common dates when most – if not all – players can participate. Some athletes will be dual-sport participants, and spring sporting events such as baseball or softball could limit player participation. As well, parents may have multiple children in their family who are simultaneously participating in other travel sports, creating another obstacle.

Secondary problems arise from the practice gym itself: when can your team participate based on the facility’s schedule? High schools, for example, will often reserve gym time for in-season and out-of-season athletes to use their gyms after hours, limiting the options or the facility’s availability.

Flexibility is often the key in crafting a practice schedule that works for everyone on your travel basketball team. While certain nights work well this week, other weeknights or even weekend workouts will best suit the coach and players’ schedules the following week. Parents should understand in advance that practice times will vary from week to week.

7. Order Uniforms

Selecting a uniform provider for your travel basketball team is another step that can seem overwhelming at first glance ( we cover this topic in detail ). Locally, apparel shops can help you place an order for uniforms. Online, hundreds of outfitter options exist, providing tools to create a custom look for your squad. Choosing a reputable provider should be the first order of business for the team.

Most tournaments will require teams to have two styles of uniforms – a light and dark color jersey. While travel tournaments are often at neutral sites for their participants, these competitions will establish a home (light color) and away (dark color) team theme for scoring purposes much like school-sanctioned activities.

Another consideration for team managers is to decide on reversible jerseys or multiple jersey options. Reversible jerseys will have both a light and dark color scheme for players; meanwhile, owning two separate jerseys also accomplishes this task for travel squads. With options starting at around $100 for both reversible and multiple sets, picking either style is merely a preference for each organization.

The final consideration should be the quality of the jersey material. Depending on the schedule, travel teams may play upwards of 50 games during their season. Having a quality jersey that can handle wear and tear from playing numerous games matters more in this instance. Travel squads playing in a handful of local tournaments and perhaps 12-15 games in total can opt for a lesser-quality jersey.

8. Collect Payments

While this step is a no-brainer, determining who and how your travel basketball team collects participant’s payments requires some initial thought. Setting a timeline for when all fees should be paid must be established from the get-go to ensure a smooth process.

As society trends toward online and plastic payment methods, creating a virtual payment center is a popular option. Most teams will accept payment via virtual payment platforms like CashApp, Venmo or PayPal. Others may create a more time-honored approach by setting up a team bank account and ask for cash or checks to deposit into it.

While either online or in-person payment methods are acceptable, each travel organization should establish which individual is responsible for collecting and recording the payments. Think of this as the team’s business manager. Depending on the size of the team or the fee, payments could exceed several thousands dollars and may require multiple individuals that are capable and trustworthy of the task.

Further, the individuals responsible for collecting payments will also be responsible for the inevitable and dreaded “collection” call to parents who have not paid. Travel basketball organizations should discuss in advance what penalties – such as revoking tournament privileges – players will be assessed for not paying established team fees to provide collectors with leverage to secure the payments.

9. Call the Tournament Directors

Once your travel basketball team has determined its schedule, the coach or team administrator should contact each tournament director at the beginning of the season. Primarily, this phone call will be to confirm that the published tournament dates and team entry fee are accurate. Ensuring the tournament does not have typos in its announcement is one way to avoid surprises later in the season.

Moreover, your coach and players need to know and understand the rules for each tournament. While most tournaments will have similar rules – length of quarters/halves, number of timeouts, size of roster – it’s important to know if a tournament has specific rules before showing up unprepared for your travel basketball team’s competition.

Finally, establishing contact with the tournament directors can be useful for new organizations. Often, travel tournament directors can provide their recommended travel arrangements nearby so teams can secure the best group rates or cleanest hotel accommodations. Knowing in advance where to stay will help parents plan accordingly.

10. Designate Support Staff

While this is the last step, that doesn’t mean designating a support staff for your travel basketball team is not one of the most important ones. Finding individuals who will volunteer their time to assist in team activities is a critical chore each season.

If you’re starting from scratch, your supporting roles will most likely be filled by parents or relatives of players on the team. In fact, almost all travel teams will look to players’ family members first as they are traveling to each tournament to support their basketball enthusiast. A first step for coaches is to meet with players’ families and find out if any have a background in the support role.

From keeping statistics at the game to who is video recording the event, knowing what roles need filled is another important part to creating a successful experience for your travel basketball team players, coaches and parents. In addition to on-court roles, most teams rely on a dedicated social media manager to broadcast individual and team success stories to followers during and after the competition.
