Let’s be honest. You’re here for the Hobbits. It’s true, Matamata has kind of become an essential destination on most trips around the North Island, but beyond Hobbit Holes, what else is there to do in Matamata New Zealand? Well, you’ve come to the right place with this list of things to do in Matamata!

You could even stay awhile in one of the affordable 5 Best Backpacker Hostels in Matamata .

All right, let’s go over our recommendations of what to do in Matamata if you are not into Hobbits and other wizarding things.

1. See Wairere Falls

Kicking off our list of Hobbit-less things to do in Matamata is Wairere Falls. From one enchanting place to another, the Wairere Falls walk will take you through moss-covered rocks and tree roots like something out of a fairy tale. Walk the 3-4 hour track to the highest waterfall in the North Island cascading an impressive 153m (502ft). There’s also an option to take a further 30-45 minutes-walk on a less-maintained track for a different perspective of the falls. See here for more waterfalls you can’t miss in New Zealand .

Location: 15 minutes drive from Matamata. The walk starts from Goodwin Road, off Old Te Aroha Road.

2. Discover the Matamata Heritage Trail

Before Hobbits roamed the town, Matamata was just a humble Kiwi town. Get a sense for the town, while seeing some spectacular gardens, on the Matamata Heritage Trail. Highlights include a grand 1919 bank building, the Railway Plantation from 1855, as well as parks and gardens.

Wairere falls

The highest waterfall in the North Island is within the Kaimai National Park. The waterfalls are approximately 15 minutes drive from Matamata to the carpark at the start of the walk. The popular route is well maintained however there are a considerable number of steps.

Wairere Falls is the third landmark Toroa, Captain of the Mataatua canoe, had been instructed by his father Irakewa to identify. The falls were an important source of freshwater for the Ngati Awa tribe.

The falls reflect the story of human occupation, originally a place for warrior initiation, the site for a flax mill (1870), replaced by a flour mill in 1879, and later reconverted to a flax mill. The stream continued to supply water to the Whakatāne township until 1924. The site was made a scenic reserve in 1971. The waterfalls are lit at night creating a great photo moment and a chance to reflect who has gone before you.

Here houses were built, maize, wheat, potatoes, kumaras and peaches were grown, and a church, post office and storage pits (rua) were built. "The set of Peter Jackson's Hobbit trilogy!"

Matamata tourism.

Located less than 200 km south of Auckland on New Zealand’s North Island, lies the town of Matamata in the Waikato region. The town shot to fame primarily as the location for the set of Peter Jackson’s epic Lord of the Rings and Hobbit trilogies. The location for the set has since been turned into a tourist attraction that draws a huge number of fans of the world-wide box office phenomenon from around the globe. From the famous Party Tree, 44 hobbit holes, including Bilbo Baggins’ hobbit hole on Bag End, and the Green Dragon Inn amongst others, are all relics of the set that visitors can experience by themselves. Tours of Hobbiton may also include whole feasts with menus specifically designed from dishes featured in the books.

However, Matamata is not only about Peter Jackson or Hobbiton and has a host of other tourist attractions that deserve their own light. The Wairere Falls are the highest waterfalls in the North Island and cascades down for over 150m. The areas surrounding the Wairere falls and the walking tracks that envelope the falls offer some of the best hiking opportunities whilst showcasing the region’s spectacular scenic beauty. The Waikato Plains, the mountain ranges, and the valleys all create for a great image.  Matamata is also well-known for the numerous swimming holes and billabongs that can be found around the town. The Opal Hot Springs is one such notable example of this kind of swimming pool. The Firth Tower, located in the heart of Matamata town, is one of the defining landmarks in the region. The tower is a popular tourist attraction and is iconic in its own right. A stone’s throw away from the Firth Tower is the Matamata i-Site and this acts as the visitor’s centre for the town. The Matamata i-Site is also the perfect site for a quick lunch, or a coffee, or a pastry as well and is the ideal place to obtain information regarding any tourist attraction in the town.
