The McPike Mansion, both a historic and haunted Alton property, sits on the once 15-acre estate of Henry Guest McPike. The grand Italianate Victorian home was built in 1869 by the prolific Alton architect Lucas Pfeiffenberger and is composed of 16 rooms, a basement, and a vaulted wine cellar. The mansion and grounds are considered to be one of the most haunted places in the United States and possibly the most haunted location in Illinois. The mansion is on the National Register of Historic Places and has been investigated by many historians and paranormal investigators over the years. The property and home have long been an important landmark for the City of Alton and a sincerely spooky place for visitors seeking paranormal thrills. Henry McPike once served as the Mayor of Alton and was a successful fire insurance investor, industrialist, and landowner- owning more than 700 local properties. Henry was an avid horticulturist, founding the oldest horticultural society in Illinois. The mansion's grounds were planted with rare trees, shrubs, flowers, and had extensive vineyards from which Henry developed the McPike Grape- a variation that came to be known nationally. Henry was a strong abolitionist supporter and friend of Abraham Lincoln and even helped arrange the famed “A House Divided” debate with Senator Stephen Douglas along Alton’s riverfront. His involvement in the abolitionist movement has made some speculate that his hilltop mansion might’ve been used as a stop along the Underground Railroad. The mansion was lived in by the McPike family until Henry's death in 1910, but the history gets a bit hazy between that year and 1936- at some point in that span the mansion served as home to Brown's Business College and later was purchased and used as a boarding house by Paul Laichinger- who supposedly lingers as a ghost on the property. After Laichinger’s death in 1945, the property began to struggle and by 1950 it was abandoned altogether. Weather, vandalism, and lack of upkeep ravaged the building and grounds. Once being an immaculate home complete with 11 marble fireplaces, elegant crown molding, and intricately carved bannisters, thieves stole much of the home’s finer details- including every single bannister, light fixture, and even the toilets. Only a fraction of the regal crown molding is still intact in one of the front rooms. Besides theft and defacement, the home’s structural integrity dwindled, leading it to become a condemned building, the floors no longer safe to walk upon and the roof beginning to cave in. Plans to demolish the aging structure and build a shopping center were proposed in the 80’s, but the plans fell through due to zoning issues. The home has been on the Top 10 Most Endangered Historical Places list for some time. In 1994, Sharyn and George Leudke decided to buy the property “on impulse” at an auction. Ever since, the couple has been trying to repair, stabilize, and restore the historic home to its former grandeur, but the journey hasn’t been an easy one. The expense to repair the roof alone was estimated at a whopping $50,000- and foundational issues, window repair, and the water-damaged floor and woodwork of the home quickly added to that overhead. To help raise funds to restore the McPike, the Leudke’s started holding historic and paranormal tours. Group visits include a guided tour of the grounds and the McPike crypt reviewing the history and hauntings of the home. Guests will then descend into the McPike wine cellar- supposedly the most haunted room of the house- and participate in a dark room session with McPike’s medium, Sandy Little Lizard. The tour lasts approximately 1 ½ hours. The McPike Mansion is known nationally and internationally as one of the most haunted locations in the country. Visitors and owners alike have witnessed paranormal activity in the form of orbs, balls of light, shadow figures, strange mists, and even full-bodied apparitions peering from the mansion’s windows, in photos, or in person. Several of the spirits purportedly haunting the McPike have been identified from old photographs and documents, including sightings of McPike’s wife, Eleanor, and Henry McPike himself. Strong cigarette smoke- attributed to Paul Laichinger who smoked heavily- has been smelled and even seen in the building- which has been smoke-free for decades and Sharyn Leudke had an encounter while gardening of a man watching her from the mansion windows; a photo found later identified the man as Laichinger- wearing the same suit and tie! Other spirits said to reside in the home include a young girl named Sarah who smells of lilac perfume, a woman in a green dress with long hair on the stairwell, and the McPike children. Scraping doors, children’s disembodied laughter, unexplained footsteps, and objects disappearing and appearing in different locations are also common at the residence.

The McPike has appeared on multiple television programs and is featured in books, urban exploration videos, and paranormal sites. Take a tour or, if you’re brave enough, stay the night on one of the haunted mansion’s overnight camping adventures! Tours and camping dates are listed on the McPike Mansion’s website or on Rivers and Route's event page - tours peak during autumn. It is recommended to buy tickets in advance as they sell out quickly! The McPike is not open to the public outside of scheduled events. The Story Behind Illinois' Most Haunted House Will Give You Nightmares

The Midwest is the best.

More by this Author

The McPike Mansion has been called one of the scariest structures in the United States and it definitely ranks as one of the most haunted houses in Illinois. Originally built in 1869 by Henry Guest McPike, it is located in Alton, Illinois (a town with a haunted history in itself). When you look over the McPike Mansion’s history, you’ll quickly learn it has repeatedly been the center of paranormal investigations. According to the owner, two ghosts haunt this property: former owner Paul Laichnger and a former domestic servant named Sarah Wells. Flashlights will die out unexpectedly and lights will flicker. There is a strong smell of lilac in the attic, which is the kind of perfume Wells used to wear. What is really creepy is how things look in photos. You might see figures or orbs of light in photos that were definitely NOT in the shot.

The structure is on the National Register of Historic Places. It stayed abandoned for quite a while before being purchased. It would have been restored and converted into a hotel, but it was not eligible for grant money despite prior assurances. Nevertheless, you can visit and go on a tour of the haunted McPike Mansion in Illinois. There are also annual campouts held in the McPike Mansion

What are the creepiest places in Illinois?

The McPike Mansion is one of many haunted locales in Illinois. There are several creepy spots in the state, including one that’s hiding in plain sight:

  • Today, the 1,208-acre park serves as an urban oasis – complete with a famous zoo and museums; however, that wasn’t always the case.
  • Long ago, the area was filled with tombs – most of which were destroyed during the Great Fire of 1871. One tomb survived, and that tomb is, you guessed it, the Couch Tomb.
  • In 1998, the tomb was opened and researchers were met with an unexpected discovery: the tomb held roughly 80 bodies!
  • Ever since many passersby claim to hear and see strange things surrounding the historic burial site.

Are there any haunted hotels in Illinois?

Haunted locales in the state come in all shapes and sizes, including hotels:

  • It was actually named the most haunted place in the state back in 2016 by Travel + Leisure . Once you learn the hotel’s history, its spooky reputation makes complete sense.
  • First off, the hotel is over 100 years old, so its history is a lengthy one.
  • Second, lots of infamous figures have stayed in the hotel over the years, including Al Capone, who is often spotted near his old suite on the hotel’s eighth floor.
  • The hotel’s resident ghosts don’t end with Capone, though.
  • There are a few other phantoms, who call the Congress Plaza Hotel home including Peg Leg Johnny, who seems to be playful, getting his kicks from turning lights and electronics on and off.

McPike Mansion

  • April 22, 2024
  • Illinois , USA

In the ghost capital of Illinois, Alton, the McPike Mansion takes the cake. This historic Italianate-Victorian style building, located on the highest point in Alton, used to be the biggest and most beautiful home of the town. Now, it is the home of 11 permanent ghostly residents. It was abandoned for a long time and that is exactly how the spirits wanted it.

Alton, Illinois

Let’s begin with a little bit of history about Alton. This small town is considered very haunted, perhaps even the most haunted town in America! Why is Alton so haunted? Perhaps the answer lays in the dark and bloody history of the town. The town has seen floods, epidemics, murder, the Civil War and many more tragedies. Add some Native American ghosts and the Underground Railroad to it and voila! The railroad is even located right underneath the McPike Mansion. No wonder why it’s so haunted.

The history of the McPike Mansion

The McPike Mansion , or Mount Lookout as it’s also referred to, was built between 1869 and 1871. Henry Guest McPike (1825 – 1910) and his family were its first residents. McPike was an important member of Alton’s society. He even served as the town’s mayor for three years. McPike was also a businessman, involved with real estate and a well-known Horticulturalist. He developed the famous McPike Grape, which grew on his own 15 acres (6 ha) estate.

After McPike’s death, the mansion had several owners until it was purchased by Paul A. Laichinger. Not only did Laichinger live at the McPike Mansion, he also leased some rooms to a few tenants. The McPike Mansion sure is big enough; the three-story mansion has 16 rooms and a vaulted wine-cellar. Laichinger stayed at the house until his death in 1951. After his death, the house was abandoned for many years, which didn’t help when it came to ghost stories.

Almost torn down

The mansion fell victim to the weather and vandalism. Most of the furniture and historic ornaments were either stolen or ruined. It wasn’t strange that people started seeing the house as a haunted mansion. The broken windows, rusting iron fence and the private graveyard gave the mansion a spooky vibe. At some point, there were plans to tear the house down and replace it in a shopping center, but these plans disappeared back into the cupboard and the mansion was saved. It was even listed on the Register of Historic Places in 1980, but it remained unoccupied until it was purchased in auction in 1994 by Sharyn and George Luedke. They still own the mansion and try to restore it in its former glory.

Impulse purchase

Believe it or not, but the Luedkes bought the mansion on impulse. They wanted to turn it into a hotel, but shortly after the buy, they learned they couldn’t get the promised grant money for restoration. That didn’t stop them. With donations and money made by giving guided tours, the two gradually restore the mansion as it would have looked like. In 2017, they were even awarded by the Alton Historical commission for the preservation work they’d done on the front porch and the conservatory.

The ghosts of the McPike Mansion

Sharyn saw her first ghost about 6 weeks after buying the mansion. She was working in the garden and when she looked up, she saw a man looking at her from behind one of the windows. She was shocked, because nobody was supposed to be inside the house. When she inspected the house, there was no one there. Later, she found some old pictures of Paul Laichinger and it was him! He was even wearing the same clothes as in the picture!

Paul Laichinger isn’t Sharyn’s only ghostly encounter. Months later she was hugged by a ghostly presence. When this ghost appeared more often, she started naming her Sarah. She was touched by the fact a psychic who contacted the ghost told her name was Sarah Wells. A book in the mansion’s library even had her name written in it! Sarah used to be a servant at the house and she’s a very friendly ghost. She likes to hang around in the attic, and she likes wearing perfume that smells of lilies.

Ghost children

Some of Laichinger’s tenants complained of hearing children’s laughter in the middle of the night. This was strange because there were no children on the property. Perhaps these were the two children of Henry and Eleanor McPike who died at a very young age. Their little bodies are buried in the private cemetery. They now haunt the backyard. The headstones are now broken and unreadable.

The wine-cellar

McPike Mansion side - Mcpikemansioncrew via commons.wikimedia CC BY SA 4.0

The wine-cellar is the most active area in the house. Voices and footsteps have been heard. A mysterious mist tends to follow people around in the cellar and the massive metal door scrapes on the floor as if somebody pushes it.

Other ghostly residents

Paul and Sarah are the most common spirits at the house, but there are more. During a ghost tour a group was startled when a full apparition descended the stairs. She was wearing a beautiful blue gown; her hair was flowing as if a wind-machine was blowing at her and her feet were fluttering as if she was a ballet dancer. She was floating a couple of inches above the ground. Perhaps she was the woman who mysteriously died in a bathtub at the house. Psychics are convinced of the fact Henry and Eleanor McPike still reside in the house. Pacing footsteps, vanishing objects, shadow figures, faces in the windows, orbs and the sensation of being touched are common phenomena as well. But, all ghosts seem friendly.

The McPike Mansion today

Even though work is still in progress at the mansion, but the doors are open to the public. You can book a guided ghost tour in the house and perhaps you’ll come face-to-face with one of the ghostly residents!

Alton Illinois sits on the other side of the river from St. Louis Missouri and is considered part of the metro St. Louis area. Up on a hill north of town sits an old brick mansion surrounded by large old trees. The home is said to be one of the most haunted houses in America. It was built in 1869 by Henry McPike. He was a local businessman and politician who served as Alton’s mayor for a few years.

The mansion sits on fifteen acres, and McPike grew award-winning grapes for the wine he made in the home’s cellar. The family lived in the home until their deaths when the house was sold to Paul A. Laichinger in 1925. He lived in the home while renting rooms to others until his death in 1945. The home sat neglected for decades, and vandals broke in and stole most of the architectural components of the house. It was saved from the wrecking ball when it was sold at auction in 1994 to Sharyn and George Luedke.

The Luedkes began the process of renovating the home and noticed strange occurrences—the sound of voices or whistling or cold spots as people passed through the rooms. They believe it was the spirits of Henry McPike and his family. His daughter was known to participate in whistling competitions and maybe she is still whistling from beyond the grave. The home is privately owned but is open for tours and ghost hunts. You can see more at their website www.Mcpikemansion.com

I visit a lot of privately owned houses and places and admire them from the road since most have no trespassing signs posted. I was pleasantly surprised to see a sign welcoming visitors to the McPike Mansion by the owners. I hope people that visit will be respectful and the owners will continue to make it available to the public. You can learn more about the mansion on their website HERE

Should be labeled "wine cellar tour"

As you probably already gathered from the other reviews, the "tour" (and I use that term loosely), consists of a short video presentation by the owner, followed by a trip to the cellar with a medium (if you believe in that sort of thing) where the lights are turned off and the medium tells everybody how many spirits have joined them in the room. Pretty hokey. I was entertained more by the folks around me (one guy was fully equipped with night-vision goggles, a camera and an infra-red light), but there was definitely nothing spooky about the venture. Like many others, I was hoping for at least a partial tour of the mansion, but it sounds like it's still not safe enough due to questionable structural integrity in some areas. From what I did manage to see of the interior, the place still looks like it's in one heck of a mess. The owner (who is very nice) has managed to get a new roof and most of the windows installed, but honestly, I can't see this place ever getting completed in my lifetime unless someone generous with extremely deep pockets steps in, as I'm certain that the money they make from these tours doesn't add up to much. As a side note - the whole event was so loosely structured that if you didn't know any better you'd think that this was the owner's first time doing something like this. They could really polish it up and make it so much neater in my opinion. So is it worth twenty bucks? If you're a paranormal fan (or just curious), and simply want to set foot inside a relatively famous spook-house, then yes. For most others though, I think you could probably find better ways to spend your money.

The McPike Mansion is a must-see for paranormal enthusiasts. The owners are so friendly and accommodating. A medium is used and an informal seance is given in the basement. The home itself and absolutely beautiful. Featured in Ghost Adventures and the Scariest Places on Earth.

mcpike mansion tours

I was really disappointed in this tour. It's called the "McPike Mansion Tour" on their website, but it doesn't actually include a “tour” of the house and should not be called a tour. It’s simply a visit to the old wine cellar beneath the home and a crypt out back. I was hoping to tour the various rooms in the home and take lots of video and pictures of the interior of the mansion- what kind of haunted house tour does include that as a bare minimum?! The introduction slide show also didn’t work (Blame it on the ghosts??). So we never got to see any of the old historical photos (even though we paid for it). Very disappointing, poorly organized, so don't waste your time in taking this "tour".

mcpike mansion tours

I visited the area on the street because of online reviews. I appreciate the difficulty of restoring a mansion like this. I think a dedicated local board of directors that knows how to fundraise is necessary. On this trip we also visited Carnton in Franklin and it looks like they have this kind of support. Because waiting for ghost activity is like waiting for paint to dry, I think the main focus has to be on history. I have stayed at Hotel Jeffery in Ca, and did have an experience, but I question if someone other than a ghost caused it. They bring in a lot of paranormal group visitors. That might be a good way for this attraction to raise funds. Alton is a scary place! Check out the cemetery!

We attended the Haunted America Conference in Alton, Ill and did the McPike Mansion ghost tour as a part of it. The owners were really nice and gave a history of the mansion. The night time ghost tour was very interesting. If you are in the Alton area, this would be a place to check.

I don't believe in haunted houses. We once slept in a room at the historic Cashtown Inn near Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, that has a widespread reputation as one of the most haunted establishments in the country. Well, I'm still here to say that absolutely nothing happened. No ghosts, no eerie sounds, no scary moments. Nothing. So I certainly dismissed the fanciful tales of so-called "psychics" and the breathless stories of vandals and curiosity seekers of strange encounters in the McPike Mansion in Alton, Illinois. Built in 1869 by Henry Guest McPike, it is situated on Alby Street on a site of 15 acres, one of the highest points in Alton, which is called Mount Lookout. It is a three-story red brick and white building with white pillars supporting the porch. It contains 16 rooms, 11 marble fireplaces, beautifully carved stairway banisters and a vaulted wine cellar. In 1925, the mansion was purchased by Paul A. Laichinger, who lived there until his death in 1945. While the house was abandoned for several years, there was some interest in demolishing it and converting the land into a shopping center. The plan fell through due to zoning issues. In the meantime, the house was ransacked for what was left behind, including the furnishings, wooden banisters and even the toilets. The structure was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980 but was left derelict for many years before being purchased by Sharyn and George Luedke in an auction in 1994. They had intended to convert it into a hotel but were unable to secure restoration grant money from any federal, state or local agency. According to the owner, the mansion is allegedly haunted by the ghost of a former owner (Laichinger) and a former domestic servant named Sarah. Ghost hunters and haunted tour groups and other inquisitive folks are invited to take a virtual tour of the house and grounds or join one of the scheduled events held at the mansion.
