Atraxa, Grand Unifier

This week in the world of  Magic  finance the biggest winner - by far - was Atraxa, Grand Unifier . The Phyrexia: All Will Be One mythic shot up from around $10, briefly touched $60, before dropping to around $45. So why did Atraxa go from average mythic to one of the most expensive cards in #MTGONE? Players have more or less decided that  Atraxa, Grand Unifier is the second coming of Griselbrand (Read the Fine Print) and as a result the seven-drop is showing up across formats in decks that can cheat it into play. The last week for Atraxa has been pretty absurd. Along with being the second most popular commander from  Phyrexia,  it won both Standard challenges on Magic Online (in two different decks) as well as showed up in Modern Creativity, Legacy Reanimator, and even Vintage Oath of Druids . We've seen crossover cards that are extremely popular in Commander and in 60 card formats maintain some extremely high prices lately (see: The Great Henge (planeswalker stamp) and The Meathook Massacre ), and as a result it wouldn't be a surprise to see Atraxa, Grand Unifier remain one of the most expensive cards from Phyrexia: All Will Be One .

Meanwhile in Commander, Skithiryx, the Blight Dragon is on the rise, increasing 58% this week to nearly $44. Thanks to all of the new toxic cards in Phyrexia: All Will Be One, poisoning the table became much more realistic in Commander, and even though Skithiryx, the Blight Dragon is technically an infect card rather than a toxic threat, it's still one of the best ways to poison out an opponent, so players are snagging copies to play in Ixhel, Scion of Atraxa . Just how much staying power poison has in Commander remains to be seen - sometimes new mechanics are fads that see a lot of play when a set releases and then quickly fade - but considering Skithiryx, the Blight Dragon has only been reprinted once, supply isn't super high. Expect it to remain expensive until it is eventually reprinted again.

Speaking of poison in Commander, proliferate cards are also on the rise, lead by Sword of Truth and Justice (retro) which gained 48% this week, climbing to $38, although cards like Viral Drake , Contagion Engine , and Inexorable Tide all saw a jump this week as well. In Commander it's fairly hard to deal 10 poison counters to three opponents using toxic or infect creatures, but getting a few counters on opponents and then proliferating them a bunch of times is much more realistic, which explains the sudden interest in old proliferate cards. Expect the prices of these cards to normalize a bit as the hype for Phyrexia: All Will Be One dies down, but in the short term you'll have to pay a premium.

MTG Pro Tour Phyrexia: Standings, format, and scores

Image of Danny Forster

Tabletop Magic: The Gathering competition has returned for the 2022-2023 season through the Phyrexia Pro Tour, showcasing matches in Phyrexia: All Will Be One Draft and Pioneer Constructed.

Over 250 of the top MTG players from around the globe converged on Philidelphia for the first Pro Tour tournament of the 2022-2023 season. Many of the players earned invites through Regional Championships, along with MTG Arena Weekend Qualifiers. The event took place over the course of three days, with players competing in six total rounds of ONE Draft and up to 10 Swiss rounds of Pioneer Constructed to determine who advanced to the top-eight playoffs on day three.

mtg pro tour phyrexia decklists

All players with a record of 12-4 during the Swiss rounds earned a direct invite to the 2022-2023 Magic World Championship, in addition to the top-eight playoffs. Players also competed for match points as the top 32 players at the end of the season also earn a seat at MTG Worlds.

Feb. 17 MTG Pro Tour Phyrexia standings

The first day of competition at the Phyrexia Pro Tour in Philidelphia began with three rounds of ONE Draft. The Limited Draft format lived up to its reputation as an aggressive meta while also featuring mechanics like Toxic and Oil counters. The true dominant factor during day one of Limited Draft was the bombs with planeswalkers like The Eternal Wanderer and Kaya, Intangible Slayer.

After three Swiss rounds of ONE Draft, a total of 26 players went into the Traditional Pioneer Constructed Swiss rounds with 3-0 records. Four wins during day one guaranteed players that they advanced to the second day of competition.

mtg pro tour phyrexia decklists

A total of five Swiss rounds in the Traditional Pioneer Constructed format wrapped up the first day of competition, with Benton Madsen going undefeated with WU Artifacts in the ONE Draft and Selesnya Auras in Pioneer. Players with 7-1 records after day one that also went undefeated during the Draft rounds were Gabriel Nasif, Tristan Wylde-Larue, Shota Yasooka, Takumi Matsuura, David Inglis, Chris Ferber, and Benton Madsen.

Feb. 18 MTG Pro Tour Phyrexia standings

Day two at Pro Tour Phyrexia began with another three Swiss rounds of ONE Draft. Rather than players getting slotted in random pods, Draft pods were based on standings from day one. The meta from day one reinforced the power of aggressive archetypes like RW and RG. But other archetypes like UW and GB also performed well with the players who went undefeated in Draft during the first day of competition.

mtg pro tour phyrexia decklists

Benton Madsen, the only player to go undefeated during day one, suffered two losses during the ONE Draft rounds. But despite the two losses, he remained in second place overall heading into the Traditional Pioneer Constructed Swiss rounds. Rising up the standings was Nathan Steuer, the reigning Magic World Champion, going undefeated during day two of the Draft rounds with a Blue and Green deck.

mtg pro tour phyrexia decklists

Two games into the Pioneer Swiss rounds and Shota Yasooka had already reached a total of 12 match wins. The accomplishment earned him the rest of the day off and a seat in the top eight on day three.

Heading into round 15, five players were one match away from making it into the top eight of Pro Tour Phyrexia: Benton Madsen, Reid Duke, Takumi Matsuura, Gabriel Nassif, and Márcio Carvalho.

After 16 total rounds between days one and two, the top eight of a field of over 200 was determined. Yasooka was the first to advance, followed by Duke, Matsuura, and Madsen during round 15. Joining them after round 16 were Steuer, Ferber, Nassif, and Davis.

Day three of the Phyrexia Pro Tour featured the top eight players from the tournament playing only Pioneer Constructed. Matches were best-of-five games with no sideboards allowed until after game two in a single elimination bracket.

Reid Duke kicked off the Pro Tour playoffs with an amazing comeback against Nathan Steuer, advancing to the semifinals while Derrick Davis swept Shota Yasooka with his Enigmatic Fires deck. Matsuura and his Mono-White Humans decks won against Ferber and Madsen advanced to the semifinals by beating Nassif with his Selesnya Auras deck.

Duke was the first to advance to the finals at Pro Tour Phyrexia, defeating Davis. And Madsen, who qualified for the PT by playing on his phone, advanced to the finals after defeating Matsurra.

But not only fame and glory were on the line for these players and the other attendees of the event: World Championship Invites could be earned through a few different ways. If players could earn match points throughout the whole event, so they could hopefully be on the Top 32 list at the end of the season and this way get their entry to Worlds, or they could try and achieve a 12-4 score during the Swiss rounds, as well as getting into the Top 8 of the event.

Day 1: February 17th brings an Underdog

With rough competition on the horizon, players set up their gears to battle in three rounds of Phyrexia: All Will Be One Draft, and later on, in the eventual 5 rounds of Traditional Pioneer. To qualify for the second day of the event, players had to achieve 4 wins total in the first day. Expectations were high as several famous players achieved undefeated status in the first draft, including Gabriel Nasif, Tristan Wylde-Larue, Shota Yasooka, Takumi Matsuura, David Inglis, Chris Ferber, but one fairly unusual name stood out from the most for his choice of strategy: Benton Madsen and his “Selesnya Auras” .

Madsen, who picked WU Artifacts for the ONE Draft, started playing in 2012 and had already competed in a few tourneys himself, including an Online Mythic Championship. He came into the Pro Tour incredibly grounded, and claimed in an interview after the draft that he just wanted to have fun and get to draft on Day Two.

Image via WotC

For all he knew, his pick, which he confessed he “picked a friend’s brain last night over dinner”, could easily land him a 0-8 or a 8-0. Thankfully for him, his perfect score of 8-0 granted him access to the tournament’s second day, and all of his goals were accomplished by day 1.

“Selesnya Auras” as he conned himself, presented a fearsome challenge for other Pioneer meta decks, and got the job done with his powerful Skrelv, Defector Mite and Light-Paws, Emperor's Voice interaction. It was a list previously seen in the hands of Regional Championship Top 4 competitor Michael Letsch, but fairly tuned and updated by Madsen.

Madsen later went on to comment on why the experience was so important to him:

“Top 8ing a tournament on Magic Online is amazing, but your heart isn't beating out of your chest the way it is in person. I like that discomfort.”

- Benton Madsen

Final standings went as follows:

Standings for Day 1

Day 2: Top 8 is formed on February 18th

The second day started with a harder challenge for all competitors alike. Now that half of the player pool had been cut for the second day, and the player groups were even more competitive, with several of the best players in the world competing alongside hopeful players, 5 rounds, three of ONE Draft and two of Pioneer, stood between them and the Top 8.

Eventually, after a tough battle between teammates Reid Duke and Gabriel Nassif, and many more exciting moments, a Top 8 was formed with a few of the best competition Magic has to offer worldwide. Shota Yasooka, one of the most dreaded foes, has so far earned half a million in his Magic-related endeavors, and almost managed a perfect score for the first 13 rounds, managing to get 12 wins out of 13. Nathan Steuer is the current World Champion.

Check out their decklists below:

Shota Yasooka - Rakdos Midrange - Score 15 - 1

Reid duke - izzet creativity - score 13 - 3, benton madsen - selesnya auras - score 13 - 3, takumi matsuura - mono-white humans - score 13 - 3, nathan steuer - lotus field combo - score 12 - 3 - 1, chris ferber - lotus field combo - score 12 - 4, derrick davis - enigmatic fires - score 12 - 4, gabriel nassif - izzet creativity - score 12 - 4.

The final standings went as follows:

Day 2 Standings

Day 3: A Winner is Crowned on February 19th

For the final day of the event, the Top 8 faced each other in a riveting single elimination bracket. Early on, the bracket looked like this as competitors geared up for their battles:

At the end of the day, though Madsen managed to bring his Selesnya Auras all the way to the top, Reid Duke got 1st place in the Magic: The Gathering Phyrexia Pro Tour!

Meta Analysis and Interesting Lists

The metagame for Pioneer can be very diverse, as it doesn’t rotate and is based on sets from Return to Ravnica onwards. It has its own banlist, with a few of the most notable bans being the fetch lands. The most used deck was Rakdos Midrange, composing 15% of the meta game, which is a sensational metric for diverse metagames. Though blue was considered to be the weaker color going up to the event, actual practice showed it was one of the strongest ones.

A few of the most used cards in the event were Blackcleave Cliffs , Copperline Gorge and Razorverge Thicket , as indicated on the official website.

Check out below a few of the main stats from the tournament:

A few of the spiciest Pioneer decks seen, however, had very interesting strategies, including Abzan Auras, by Simon Nielsen, and Izzet Mindsplice, by Chris Botelho , besides many more:

Metagame Mentor: The Highest Pioneer Win Rates at Pro Tour Phyrexia

"Pro Tour competitors, welcome back to the Pro Tour!"

As the announcement was made on Friday morning at Pro Tour Phyrexia , a thundering applause erupted among the 218 competitors. The electric atmosphere in the room was palpable, and you could feel everyone's hopes and dreams. With all eyes on the same trophy, it was great to watch the flicking of the cards, the thrill of high-level tabletop competition, and the high-fives to celebrate a key match win. The Pro Tour is back, and it returned with a bang.

As we look back on the #PTPhyrexia weekend, our congratulations go once again to @reidduke for his first PT win after numerous Top Finishes! 🎉 What a well deserved victory!🏆 pic.twitter.com/TEDaOcNaFw — PlayMTG (@PlayMTG) February 20, 2023

While the Pro Tour rewards performance in both Limited and Pioneer, in this article we'll be taking a closer look at the win rates and standout decks from the Pioneer rounds. By removing the draft portion and looking beyond the Top 8, we'll get a better sense of the biggest Pioneer lessons from the event overall. Let's run the numbers!

Pioneer Win Rates

The most popular Pioneer deck archetypes in the Pro Tour metagame were Rakdos Midrange, Mono-Green Devotion, and Gruul Vehicles. Using data from Pioneer Swiss rounds only, I determined the non-mirror, non-draw, non-bye match record and win rate of every archetype at Pro Tour Phyrexia. The results are provided in the following table, where each archetype name hyperlinks to a representative decklist.

The three most-played decks (Rakdos Midrange, Mono-Green Devotion, and Gruul Vehicles) all had subpar win rates of 47.4% or lower. In my experience, it's unusual that the most-played decks all perform poorly, but it speaks well to the health and dynamism of the Pioneer metagame. The format offers the tools to counter any strategy, and players came prepared with the right sideboard cards to beat the perceived top decks. Choosing the right deck to attack the metagame was also a key success factor, as Izzet Creativity crushed Gruul Vehicles, Selesnya Auras flattened Mono-Green Devotion, and Abzan Greasefang ran over Rakdos Midrange.

Of course, sample sizes were small. For example, the 95% confidence interval for Rakdos Midrange's win rate ranged from 39.8% to 53.2%, which means that it's hard to draw strong conclusions, even for the most-played decks. Except for Mono-White Humans: I can confidently state that it performed abysmally, even when considering the low sample size.

Despite being the fifth-most popular archetype overall, Mono-White Humans had a win rate of a measly 36.2%. It struggled against Gruul Vehicles in particular. Nevertheless, specific card choices can have a large impact. Takumi Matsuura was the only one to include main deck Ossification in Mono-White Humans, and he also used Skrelv, Defector Mite from Phyrexia: All Will Be One . By exploiting these new cards, he went 7-2 in the Pioneer Swiss rounds and made it all the way to the semifinals.

To provide another useful reference, here are all decks with at least seven Pioneer non-bye wins at Pro Tour Phyrexia, along with their combined non-bye, non-draw Swiss and Top 8 record, in descending order of their win rate:

  • Masahide Moriyama, 9-1, Selesnya Angels
  • Reid Duke, 10-2, Izzet Creativity (Winner)
  • Selesnya Auras, 10-2, Benton Madsen (Finalist)
  • Joe Lossett, 8-2, Lotus Field Combo
  • Cameron Sweetnam, 8-2, Abzan Greasefang
  • Shogo Kondo, 8-2, Mono-Green Devotion
  • Takumi Matsuura, 8-3, Mono-White Humans (Semifinalist)
  • Gabriel Nassif, 8-3, Indomitable Creativity
  • Tobia Daniele Nappi, 7-3, Azorius Control
  • Greg Orange, 7-3, Azorius Control
  • Lukas Honnay, 7-3, Omnath to Light
  • Chris Carlile, 7-3, Mono Green Devotion
  • Piotr Glogowski, 7-3, Rakdos Sacrifice
  • Yuta Takahashi, 7-3, Azorius Control
  • Eli Loveman, 7-3, Abzan Greasefang
  • Alex Strange, 7-3, Azorius Control
  • Malcolm Carr, 7-3, Mono-Green Devotion
  • Derek Pite, 7-3, Rakdos Midrange
  • Nick Schirillo, 7-3, Omnath to Light
  • Miguel Castro, 7-3, Izzet Phoenix
  • Marcio Carvalho, 7-3, Rakdos Sacrifice
  • Mitchell Tamblyn, 7-3, Azorius Control
  • Joao Moreira, 7-3, Izzet Phoenix
  • Matias Leveratto, 7-3, Rakdos Sacrifice
  • Javier Dominguez, 7-3, Rakdos Midrange
  • Rodrigo Gallegos, 7-3, Rakdos Midrange
  • Jean-Emmanuel Depraz, 7-3, Izzet Phoenix
  • Nathan Steuer, 7-3, Lotus Field Combo
  • Christian Trudel, 7-3, Mono-Green Devotion
  • Matti Kuisma, 7-3, Abzan Auras
  • Tristan Wylde-LaRue, 7-3, Lotus Field Combo
  • Derrick Davis, 8-4, Enigmatic Fires (Semifinalist)
  • Chris Ferber, 7-4, Lotus Field Combo

Let's take a closer look at my picks for the five most notable decks from this group, all of which may rise in popularity in the coming weeks based on their great showing at the Pro Tour.

Five Standout Pioneer Decks from Pro Tour Phyrexia

It's hard not to start with the deck that clinched the trophy. It was piloted by Hall of Famer and team CFBUltimateGuard member Reid Duke, widely considered to be one of the most genuinely nice, humble, hard-working, and skilled competitors in the history of the game. Fourteen players registered Izzet Creativity in total, ten of which were on Duke's squad for the Pro Tour: Gabriel Nassif, Jakub Tóth, Brent Vos, Jim Davis, Martin Jůza, Luis Scott-Vargas, Seth Manfield, Eli Kassis, Mike Sigrist, and Reid Duke himself. Duke went 5-1 in his draft rounds and 10-2 in his non-bye Pioneer rounds, including the Top 8.

Their deck aims to cast Indomitable Creativity where X=2, put Worldspine Wurm and Xenagos, God of Revels onto the battlefield, and attack with a 30/30 creature with trample and haste.

Before all that, in the early game, the deck's play style resembles Izzet Phoenix, with cheap interaction and efficient card selection. But as the game progresses, it has access to a combo that instantly wins the game rather than having to attack with three-power fliers.

The combined win rate of all Izzet Creativity players was a solid 55.7%, and it would be even higher if I would limit the analysis to Duke's team only. With its performance at Pro Tour Phyrexia and strong matchup against Gruul Vehicles, Izzet Creativity cemented itself as a formidable deck in the current Pioneer metagame.

Benton Madsen, in his first Pro Tour, took second place with Selesnya Auras, going 4-2 in his draft rounds and 10-2 in his non-bye Pioneer rounds, including the Top 8. His build of Selesnya Auras was one of the many decks at Pro Tour Phyrexia based around Light-Paws, Emperor's Voice that took advantage of Razorverge Thicket and/or Skrelv, Defector Mite from Phyrexia: All Will Be One . Adding up all the different color combinations, eight players settled on such decks.

Besides Madsen, the group of Auras players included Matti Kuisma (7-3 with Abzan Auras ), Ben Lundquist (6-3 with Orzhov Auras ), Simon Nielsen (6-4 with Abzan Auras ), Jonny Guttmann (3-2 with Abzan Auras ), Julian Welman (2-3 with Abzan Auras ), Victor Kurz (4-6 with Selesnya Auras ), and Justin Chin (1-4 with Bant Auras ). Their combined win rate is the highest across any macro-archetype chosen by more than four players, which is a promising sign.

While Benton Madsen's Selesnya Auras deck is rightfully in the spotlight, don't forget that other Auras builds also had top-notch performances in Pioneer, and it's not entirely clear yet which version is best positioned for the evolving metagame. Indeed, Selesnya Auras with Gladecover Scout , Orzhov Auras with Hateful Eidolon , and Abzan Auras with Illuminator Virtuoso all play out a bit differently and have their own strengths and weaknesses. If you're interested in Abzan Auras, Simon Nielsen shared their sideboard plan here .

Due to a middling 2-4 record in draft, Masahide Moriyama missed the Top 8, despite going 9-1 with a unique take on Selesnya Angels. The standout cards in his build are Elvish Mystic and Llanowar Elves , which are used to cast key spells ahead of time. Even though Elves are not Angels, this innovation proved itself at the Pro Tour, as Moriyama was the only player to clinch 9 wins across the 10 Pioneer Swiss rounds.

To make room for the mana dorks, Moriyama shaved a few copies of Youthful Valkyrie , Skyclave Apparition , and other inessential filler creatures. To make up for the fact that Elves could be weak hits for Collected Company and Kayla's Reconstruction , Moriyama has four copies of Emeria's Call as late-game mana sinks. Moriyama was the only player to run that modal double-faced card in the Pro Tour. This novel build of Selesnya Angels, where all pieces fit together, might be the right way forward for the archetype.

At Pro Tour Phyrexia, many sideboards skimped on graveyard hate, and Abzan Greasefang took advantage of that gap by claiming the highest win rate out of all archetypes. The whopping 67.6% win rate was driven not only by Cameron Sweetnam's 8-2 run with a stock version but also by the combined 15-9 performance of Eli Loveman, David Inglis, and Zachary Kiihne, who brought an innovative delirium build.

In their build, shown above, the unique element is three copies of Traverse the Ulvenwald , which acts as a one-mana tutor for Greasefang, Okiba Boss . To enable delirium, the deck uses Vessel of Nascency and Scrapwork Mutt . It's the first time I see this combination of cards in Abzan Greasefang, but I wouldn't be surprised if it becomes the new standard. In any case, considering the solid performance of Abzan Greasefang and Izzet Phoenix at the Pro Tour, it's time for Unlicensed Hearse , Rest in Peace , and Leyline of the Void to return.

Teammates Lukas Honnay, Jitse Goutbeek, Nick Schirillo, and Zhi Yimin all registered a five-color midrange deck that uses Omnath, Locus of Creation instead of Niv-Mizzet Reborn . This results in a superior mana base and better card quality, allowing the deck to run Chained to the Rocks and Fable of the Mirror-Breaker instead of a wacky collection of gold spells. With an impressive 61.3% win rate, they've proven that this is a force to be reckoned with.

The key card in their deck is Bring to Light . With a five-color mana base, it transforms into a tutor that can immediately cast the card it finds. One noteworthy tutor target is Valki, God of Lies , since the rules allow you to cast the seven-mana Tibalt, Cosmic Impostor with Bring to Light . Another tutor target, newly introduced in Phyrexia: All Will Be One , is Elesh Norn, Mother of Machines . She doubles the effectiveness of your Leyline Binding while reducing the potency of opposing Esika's Chariot or Cavalier of Thorns . Main deck Slaughter Games also looks valuable going forward, considering the multitude of combo decks in the Top 8.

Pro Tour Phyrexia showed that Pioneer offers a diverse range of powerful archetypes that can achieve competitive success. In the hands of an experienced pilot who is familiar with the deck's play patterns and sideboard strategies, anything can win in Pioneer, and the card pool provides the tools needed to counter any strategy. Expect to see more Izzet Creativity, Auras, Selesnya Angels, Abzan Greasefang, and Omnath to Light going forward as the metagame evolves.

The next Pro Tour, called Pro Tour March of the Machine, will be held at MagicCon: Minneapolis on May 5-7. It will be fed by the second cycle of Regional Championships, which take place from March 3 through April 9, depending on your region. In addition, several players qualified for this Pro Tour last weekend based on good performance at Pro Tour Phyrexia or based on a Top 4 finish at one of the fast-lane Pro Tour Qualifiers (PTQ) that were held at MagicCon: Philadelphia.

On Friday, the Top 4 of the 406-player PTQ featured former Pro Tour champion Allen Wu, along with Warren Woodward, Jake Browne, and Mark Donaldson. On Saturday, the Top 4 of the 379-player PTQ featured Aaren Beaty, Josh McClain, Fabian Klein, and Scott Smith. Finally, the Top 4 of Sunday's rebound PTQ for Pro Tour Phyrexia competitors featured Autumn Burchett, Thomas Mechin, Kazuki Yada, and Gregory Johnson. Congratulations!

As for myself, I had a blast attending MagicCon: Philadelphia—meeting old and new friends, seeing the Pro Tour and the main stage panels live, and participating in the Secret Lair Showdown. In that debuting tournament series, I made it to the Top 32 with Gruul Vehicles to earn an exclusive Ragavan, Nimble Pilferer , while Isara Thanakit went undefeated with Rakdos Midrange and won a unique Brainstorm . Currently, it's the only one of its kind in the world, making it a really cool and coveted prize.

Congratulations to the winner of our very first Secret Lair Showdown Championship, Isara! pic.twitter.com/MwMYlWk6ng — Magic: The Gathering (@wizards_magic) February 20, 2023

Competitive tabletop Magic was back in full force at MagicCon: Philadelphia. Pioneer is in great shape, and it's a great time to jump in because all Constructed Regional Championship Qualifiers from April 22, 2023 through August 20, 2023 will be held using the Pioneer format. Throughout, I'll keep you up to speed on the latest Constructed developments every Thursday.
