The first house to be built there was that of Lieutenant Frederick Young of the East India Company in 1823, who used it when shooting game. Not long after, Sir Henry Bohle started India's first brewery in 1830. Indian royalty arrived later, with many maharajas constructing grand summer retreats there—some are now heritage hotels.

Mussoorie is set on a ridge about two hours north of Dehradun, where the nearest airport is located. Its easy accessibility from Delhi brings a chaotic convergence of tourists during the May to July peak season, causing traffic jams and delays—it's probably best to avoid visiting then. Here's how to make the most of your time in this fascinating corner of the country.

Get Your Fill of Adventure Sports

Uttarakhand Tourism

Adrenaline junkies, rejoice! It turns out the Mussoorie area of Uttarakhand is one of the best places in the country for adventure sports so you can try your hand at bungee jumping, mountain biking, trekking, paragliding, skiing, fishing, kayaking, and canoeing.

Those wanting to take on river rafting are in for a treat, with major whitewater rivers like the Ganga, Tons, Kali, Kosi, Yamuna, and Alaknanda nearby. Rafting season happens from September to June, so plan your trip accordingly if this is a one of the main reasons you're planning to visit this part of the country.

Located just a 25-minute drive from Mussoorie, Benog Wildlife Sanctuary is a wonderful place to get back to nature during your trip to India, especially for birding enthusiasts, who can spot red billed blue magpies and white capped water redstarts, among other birds. Keep an eye out for other woodland critters like owls, mountain quail, deer, and leopards.

Ride the Cable Car to Gun Hill

Uniquely India / Getty Images

Get a bird's-eye view of Mussoorie and the Doon Valley by taking the red cable car up to Gun Hill from Mall Road. It's known as The Ropeway to Gun Hill, which, at 6,800 feet above sea level, is the second highest peak in the area. It also gets its name from the cannon that the British fired everyday at noon to help people know the time.

Unfortunately, the commercialization at the top of the hill is a disappointment to some. Expect to find a hodgepodge of food stalls, souvenir shops, amusement rides, and local costumes to dress up and be photographed in.

The cable car runs from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. in summer, but starts and finishes earlier during the rest of the year. The journey time is only about five minutes, one way. Both the ticket office and boarding point are at Jhula Ghar, located about midway along Mall Road. Tickets cost 125 rupees per person and are in very high demand during peak season.

Stroll Along Mall Road

Like other hill stations in India, Mussoorie also has a Mall Road that runs through the heart of town. This lengthy pedestrian-only boulevard, which visitors gravitate to, starts at Library Bazaar and ends at Kulri Bazaar, featuring a carnival-like atmosphere in summer when it's chock full of people, shops, restaurants, and entertainment.

One of the main attractions is the Jawahar Aquarium. Those interested in Mussoorie's old time charm will find historic Mussoorie Library to be a noteworthy building—unfortunately, you can't go inside though, as it's only open to library members. Bookish types should have a drink at the renowned Writer's Bar at WelcomHotel The Savoy , located just behind the library.

Drop by the Cambridge Book Depot at the Kulri Bazaar end of Mall Road, which is a favorite of author Ruskin Bond, who is there every Saturday between 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. to meet fans and sign autographs. Feeling hungry? The best momos in Mussoorie can be found at Momos Tibetan Kitchen, about 300 feet from the Cambridge Book Depot. Nearby, travel-themed Cafe By The Way serves snacks and superb coffee. Keep an eye out for murals depicting the region's customs on Mall Road as well.

Swim at Kempty Falls

Exotica.im / Getty Images

If you don't mind unruly crowds and unclean water, the man-made swimming pool at the bottom of Kempty Falls is the place to be in the peak summer season. Such is its popularity that it usually fills to capacity with hundreds of tourists.

Kempty Falls is located about eight miles northwest of Mussoorie. To get there, take a shared taxi from the Gandhi Chowk taxi stand near the library. Government tourism enterprise GMVN also operates buses from the Library Bus Stand and has an office next to it. Those who don't want to climb the stairs to reach the waterfall from the parking area can pay 120 rupees per person to take a cable car all the way up. Changing rooms, lockers, swimwear, and equipment hire are available at a nominal cost.

Alternatively, those who prefer unspoiled natural beauty should give Kempty Falls a miss and go to Bhatta Falls or Jharipani Falls (while they're still secluded) instead.

Marvel Over the Corn Village

Sandra Leidholdt / Getty Images

Not far past Kempty Falls, Sainji Village is a remarkable offbeat attraction where the buildings are decorated with bunches of corn—the residents, who farm corn, hang it out to dry and preserve the seeds for sowing next season. You may also come across bundles of red chilies drying in the sun.

Sainji's Garhwal English Medium Schoo l was set up by a Canadian woman and her husband, who heads the village, to improve education in the area—volunteers are also accepted. Many upmarket hotels in Mussoorie and Landour, such as Rokeby Manor , also arrange trips to Sainji village to help support the locals. You can spend a day interacting with them, learning about their way of life, and sampling their delicious food, including roti made with corn flour—they love receiving visitors!

Visit Mussoorie's Tibetan Settlement

Dinodia Photo / Getty Images

Happy Valley, established by the Dalai Lama after he fled Tibet in 1959 and now home to around 5,000 Tibetan refugees, is a peaceful place to escape the clamor of Mussoorie and gain insight into the Tibetan way of life. It's possible to hike up from the Library end of Mall Road in about 45 minutes, or you can simply take a taxi.

The highlight is the small but vibrant Shedup Choepelling Buddhist Temple, also known as the Tibetan Buddhist Temple, which is surrounded by carefully maintained gardens and offers a spectacular valley view, especially at sunset. Other attractions here include the magnificent golden Buddha statue atop the hill and the Tibetan school. The student's beautiful artwork can be purchased if you're looking for a meaningful souvenir or gift to bring home.

Learn About Local Culture at SOHAM Heritage and Art Center

SOHAM Heritage & Art Center

This informative private museum was founded in 2014 by yoga exponent Sameer Shukla and his wife Doctor Kavita Shukla, who has a doctorate in drawing and painting, to preserve the heritage of the Himalayan region. It showcases all kinds of items related to the area's people, including photographs of ancient rituals, paintings, sculptures, musical instruments, and handicrafts.

The museum is situated about a 20 minute walk southeast of the Kulri Bazaar and is open daily except Wednesday, and entry is free.

Buy Natural Shawls and Scarves from Local Weavers

Himalayan Weavers

Skip the dime-a-dozen shops on Mall Road and head straight to Himalayan Weavers for exquisite hand-woven shawls and scarves, made from natural fibers such as wool, eri silk, and pashmina that are colored with natural dyes.

Himalayan Weavers was set up in 2005 by Doctor Ghayur Alam and his British wife Patricia, who relocated to the area from Delhi. Their aim was to get the area's residents to stop illegally picking medicinal plants by providing a market and income for their wool and other handmade items.

The business now supports many local weavers, too. Patricia comes up with all the designs and the wool is dyed in a room in the back of their house in Masrana village on Mussoorie-Dhanaulti Road. The house also features a showroom, where the products are displayed and sold, and you'll be able to chat with the knowledgeable owners and learn about the weaving process over a cup of tea. While the products here cost more than the ones you'll find on Mall Road (stoles start from about 800 rupees and shawls from 2,000 rupees), they're pure wool.

Enjoy the Great Outdoors

Himanshu Khagta / Getty Images

Jabarkhet Nature Reserve was established by conservationist Sejal Worah and landowner Vipul Jain, and is the first of its kind in Uttarakhand. A 110-acre, privately-owned and operated forest reserve, it opened to the public in 2015. Walking in its woods is wonderfully rejuvenating and reinvigorating. There are eight well-marked trails, each taking a few hours to cover. You'll come across all kinds of flowers, butterflies, and even mushrooms.

The reserve is situated 2,000 feet above sea level, about a 15-minute drive from Mussoorie on Mussoorie-Dhanaulti Road. It's open daily from sunrise until sunset and the entry fee is 350 rupees per person. Guided walks costing 500 rupees per person are offered for those who are keen to know more about the reserve's flora and fauna. Offbeat, bespoke walks including overnight treks and village visits can also be arranged.

If you're feeling energetic, a two-hour scenic hike uphill from Kulri Bazaar will bring you to the highest point in the area, Lal Tibba , or Red Hill, located about 7,500 feet above sea level. There's also a cafe with an observation deck and high powered binoculars to help you enjoy the view.

West of Library Bazaar, you can hike up to surveyor Sir George Everest's House in about two hours for more outstanding views. Further along in the same direction are Cloud End and Echo Point, a private forested estate that you can enter by paying 50 rupees. Picturesque Camel's Back Road is a prominent thoroughfare that connects Library and Kulri bazaars, offering numerous viewpoints, including one across to a camel-shaped rock formation and an old British cemetery.

Entertain the Kids at Company Garden

This sprawling municipal garden, named after the British East India Company, is popular with families. Young kids will enjoy the pedal boats, a wax museum featuring statues of Indian and international celebrities, and assorted rides. There's also an artificial waterfall amid the flowery foliage.

The garden is located on the outskirts of Mussoorie near Happy Valley and on the way to Kempty Falls. It's open daily until sunset and the entry fee is 25 rupees per person. tickets to the wax museum cost 100 rupees per person and rides are extra.

Attend the Mussoorie Mountain Festival

Mussoorie Mountain Festival

The iconic Mussoorie Writer's Festival, founded in 2005, formally evolved into the Mussoorie Mountain Festival in 2017. While it originally concentrated on promoting Mussoorie’s literary heritage, it now has a broader scope: to be a "community celebration of Himalayan culture, natural history, and exploration."

Its big focus today is conservation. The three-day festival features talks, panel discussions, film screenings, music performances, storytelling, and photographic exhibitions.

Mossy Falls

Mossy Falls

Mossy Falls is one of the most pretty places to visit in Mussoorie. Set amidst dense green forests, the falls cascade down from a height of 145 meters, sending up white mists all around. The falls drop from the height of 20 feet, 17 feet, 19 feet, 12 feet, 20 feet and 57 feet respectively, though not all drops are visible from one clear angle. If you wish to see all the drops, you will have to undertake a considerable amount of hiking around the falls.

There is no better way to start a day in Mussoorie than by trekking down to Mossy Falls at an early hour. Since Mossy Falls are only a short 7 kilometres away from Mussoorie, you can start from your hotel at 6 am and be at the waterfall by 7 am. Not only will you get to stroll along a quiet mountain road free from traffic, but you will also have the waterfall all to yourself. Tourist crowds only begin to arrive later in the day which means that you can go for a quick (but absolutely soap-free) dip in the chilly falls .

Highlights: The pleasure of taking a dip in the cold water of the mountains is an experience in itself, especially after an early morning hike. You can, of course, use transportation if you so desire. The quiet of the mountains and the rush and tumble of the waterfalls together make music which brings peace and joy to all those who listen to it.

Best time: September to June

Lake Mist

Lake Mist is one of the best places to visit in Mussoorie that you cannot miss. It is a pristine lake, fed by the waters of River Kempty and is home to a small but pretty waterfall whose gurgling adds music to the scenic beauty of the lake. Set in the midst of the green hills, Lake Mist is a good place to spend a few hours. There is also a boating facility available so people can go and explore the lake in close proximity. The best time to go on the lake would be early on a weekday since the place witnesses a huge rush from the visitors on weekends, which makes it noisier and more chaotic.

If you are visiting Mussoorie with children,  then you should definitely take them to Lake Mist. They will enjoy floating around the lake in the boat and gazing up at the majestic mountains all around.

Highlights:   You can also go on to Kempty Falls which are only 5 kilometers away.  There are also many restaurants around Lake Mist where you can enjoy a steaming cup of chai and good food.

The mall road in most Indian hill stations is the centre of all activities. Somewhat resembling the busy markets of cities, Mall Road in Mussoorie is where you should be to rejuvenate yourself after exciting sightseeing sprees.

Much smaller than most mall roads in other Indian hill stations, Mall Road is home to numerous decade-old restaurants and shops. If you have visited Mussoorie before, you'll notice that nothing seems to change in this quaint hill station. The roads look the same and the locals are as welcoming. Since there aren't too many restaurants and shops situated across town, including a visit to Mall Road in your places to visit in Mussoorie itinerary is inevitable.

There are several restaurants here, some which have stood the test of time and now have a loyal following of foodies. Hot steaming momos is a common sight on Mall Road and a delicious treat is never too far away. If Chinese is not your preferred cuisine, you can expect Indian delicacies as well as an Italian fare in most restaurants. The best restaurants which you should tick off your places to visit in Mussoorie itinerary are Kalsang, Tavern and Cafe By The Way.

Mall Road will also make it to your list of places to visit in Mussoorie if shopping is on your mind. Besides the usual handmade woollens, travellers can take back stationary, food items, fruit wines, jams and local handicrafts. We recommend brushing up on your bargaining skills for the best discounts.

Cost: A day on Mall Road in your places to visit in Mussoorie itinerary will cost you anywhere between Rs.100 and Rs.800 depending on the inclusions.

A trip to Gun Hill promises two things – awe-inspiring views and an opportunity to ride in a cable car. On the list of places to visit in Mussoorie, Gun Hill is an enthralling tourist attraction, especially if you are travelling with children.

The second highest point in Mussoorie, it is located at an altitude of 2024 meters. The views of the sunset from here are quite charming. You can see the entire Doon Valley and the overwhelming Himalayan range in the background.

The ropeway to Gun Hill operates between 10:00 am and 6:00 pm. While it sees a lot of tourists and there is always a queue, there is ample space for at least six to seven people. At the top of the summit, you can enjoy local street food and indulge in old-school carnival games to keep yourself busy. Balloon shooting, ring throw and a view from the telescope are a few activities here that you should add to your places to visit in Mussoorie itinerary.

The food stalls here serve everything including maggi, omelette with toast, hot tea, cold coffee, chips and Indian snacks such as samosa . A steaming plate of Maggi with hot tea is the perfect way to celebrate your break from the city. It tends to get cold in the evening so we suggest carrying an extra jacket.

If you don’t want to take the cable car and prefer trekking to the hill, you are in luck. The trek is around 20 minutes long and is not exhaustive. Mossy Falls

Located in Barlowganj in Mussoorie, Mossy Falls is one of the lesser-known, yet beautiful places which make it to the list of places to visit in Mussoorie. The fall is named after the moss-laden rocks that surround it.

There are six tiers of cascades and slides, totalling 145 feet. The tiers are of various gradients and water flows. The three upper falls are visible from a distance, while the rest can be admired when you come close to the main site. There's also a temple dedicated to Lord Shiva close to the falls which sees a trickle of spiritual seekers every day. The Shivalinga of the temple is drenched with water from the falls, making it a beautiful sight.

Although one can take the local bus or hire a taxi to reach the falls, the best way to experience Mossy Falls is through a trek from Landour which starts at the clocktower. Mussoorie – A Detailed Travel Guide for Tourists & Travelers

Shefali Joshi

Mussoorie, debatably known as the “Queen of Hills,” is a tranquil little hamlet nestled in the Himalayan Range of Garhwal hills. A trendy choice amongst honeymooners and family travelers alike, Mussoorie has always been a favorite spot for a weekend holiday from Delhi in Uttarakhand . With its always pleasant, sometimes cold weather, the town makes for a perfect getaway, especially in the scorching Indian summer months.

The place is engulfed in yesteryear charm, thanks to its popularity in the British Era. The Raj has left its mark in many hill stations across the nation – Mussoorie is one such place! Of course, the old architecture of hotels and churches splattered across the terrain along with the famous Mall Road, and even the tiniest details of old-timey lamp posts will for-sure transport you to the colonial period.

Let's quickly dive into the details:

About Mussoorie – The Queen of Hills

Shimla, Ooty, Darjeeling, Mussoorie all claim stake to the Queen of Hills title. Having lineage from Shimla, my completely biased view would say Shimla wins by a landslide (erstwhile Summer Capital of India, you guys!!!!). What do you think? Comment below!

This homestead is at a distance of 285 km from Delhi which makes it the perfect family weekend getaway from Delhi . But, there’s so much to do in this little town and the surrounding region that one such trip would never be sufficient. Mussoorie is a hotspot for various treks nearby in the Uttrakhand region.

During the monsoon, the town is in lush-green color! With the valley being jeweled by the clouds up above, the town presents for a perfect opportunity to be on your feet and explore the quaint little corners of this world! Also, winter presents a completely different landscape, so long as you’re prepared to deal with the crowds of tourists.

The biggest highlight for book-nerds (AKA the traditional definition of nerds) including yours truly is the hope to run into Ruskin Bond! The famed author, resides in Mussoorie, acting as a freelance writer. Every Saturday, the man visits the Cambridge Book Depot on the Mall road. I have heard he is very affable and approachable (haven’t had any luck seeing him thus far!)

Panoramic view from Buraanshkhand

This popular hill station Mussoorie is located at an altitude of 7464 ft and resides in the Dehradun district. Hence, in winters, very nearby Mussoorie, you can actually experience the snowfall around Surkanda Devi or Dhanolti .

Best time to visit Mussoorie

Although Mussoorie looks beautiful no matter what time of the year you visit, the most pleasant weather is from April to June. The monsoon season is easily avoidable – it might not be the safest time for road travel in the landslide-prone Himalayan ranges .

But, if you enjoy the extreme cold conditions or want to experience snowfall, then December to February will be the right time to go. The Mussoorie temperature in summer months witnesses a maximum high of 25-35 C in May/June, while the winter cool hovers around 0-4 C in December/January.

However, I must warn you that both summer and winter months are tourist seasons for the city, and if you’re looking for some peace and tranquillity, you should look at off-season timings. For some seclusion from the hustle & bustle, I would recommend visiting from Mid-February to April.

How to reach Mussoorie from Delhi

Mussoorie is very well connected by road. To reach your destination of Mussoorie, you’ll have to reach Dehradun, the capital Uttarakhand. Perfect Itinerary for a weekend trip to Mussoorie

Although many people follow their own itinerary, if you’re a first time visitor and are planning on exploring the region for a weekend (or an extended weekend), the following tentative plan will be of great help.

Day 0 – Delhi to Dehradun to Mussoorie

Reach Dehradun by early in the AM. You can do so by leaving late at night from Delhi on a train/bus or take an early morning flight to Dehradun. Once you reach Dehradun. Once all the checking in formalities are done, and you’re settled, go out and explore the town. There are a lot of things to do in Mussoorie, which makes it one of the best weekend getaways from Delhi.

First things first, your day will be jampacked today. Try to ensure that you’re on a timeline and start your day as early as possible. You can even club some of these activities on other days as well or push your itinerary for a longer duration and follow through on a more relaxed pace. The choice is yours.

Sunset Time near Mussoorie

Beginning of your Mussoorie Adventure

Start your day off by visiting Kempty Falls, an amazingly beautiful waterfall. Situated around 15 km from the main town of Mussoorie, you will require a vehicle for transportation. You can check with your hotel to get a cab for the entire day, and this will save you in a longer duration. Enjoy the waterfall and scenic beauty. There is a tonne of eateries nearby, given that this is a touristy spot.

Your next destination can be George Everest which is a relatively secluded area of Mussoorie. Roads leading up to this place aren’t that great. You might even need to hike for a KM or so if your car isn’t able to make the uphill journey. However, it will be well worth the effort as the view from the top is insane. I strongly urge you to try your hand at some adventure activities; you can try Zip Lining at George Everest.

You can also visit Laal Tibba during your first day in Mussoorie, which is one of the highest points of the town. There is an entry fee of INR 20. Laal Tibba offers some majestic views of various peaks of Himalayas. The panoramic sights of breath-taking skies and views around will make you want to stay here for as long as possible. Certain views are such that you can never look to your heart’s content – try as you might.

Of course, these are a tonne of activities, and this is a jampacked schedule – bound to keep you occupied for the entirety of the day. Return to your hotel in the night, and then you can take a walk on Mall road and explore the cuisine scene of the region. The food is exceptional in Mussoorie; there is something about the mountain air that makes everything taste amazing.

Day 2 – Dhanaulti & Surkanda Devi

Now that you’re settled into the Pahadi life, start your day by waking up early to catch a breath-taking sunrise. Post a morning walk and breakfast; I suggest you visit Dhanaulti today. Dhanaulti is a small hill station at a distance of around 24 km from the busy town of Mussoorie. The roads are in good condition, but there can be a little problem while driving in January and February due to snow.

The drive takes around one and a half hours. There is an eco-park in Dhanaulti which is a delight to visit as it’s surrounded by nature.

You can also visit Surkanda Devi temple in Dhanaulti which is devoted to the Goddess Parvati. The visit to the temple involves a trek of 1.5 km from Kaddukhal village in Dhanaulti. After exploring the whole day in Dhanaulti, you can return back to Mussoorie by evening.

This is the day you leave for home. If you’re looking for an extended journey then there are a lot of activities you may fit in here and push the leaving date to a later time – the choice is yours!
