10 Great Things To Do in Belfast

If you travel to play golf in Northern Ireland, there’s a good chance you might spend a little time in Belfast. The city of 340,000 is the largest metropolis in Northern Ireland.

Most Americans know it as the place where the Titantic ship was built in the early twentieth century. While shipbuilding is it’s undeniable legacy, Belfast has evolved into a cosmopolitan commercial center with artistic and university influences.

Northern Ireland Highlights

Northern ireland reviews, thank you for planning an amazing trip.

Everyone said it was the best trip of their life! We all loved Belfast and really loved RCD, Portrush and Portstewart. The trip to Derry and the other courses were fun too.

The Golf was Perfect

I want to express my thanks and compliments for a fantastic golf trip to Ireland this past week. We all had a great time – the golf was perfect, the dinner reservations excellent, and the hotels were terrific. Martin Woulfe, our driver, was a wonderful guy that went above and beyond to make sure everyone was happy. I give him my highest recommendation for future trips. Thanks again for Premier’s work with Jeff to put together the trip. Much appreciated.

A Fantastic Trip

I just wanted to say that we all had a fantastic trip through Premier Golf! You really did a fabulous job on putting together the trip!

The golf courses were outstanding. And the accommodations of the Europa Hotel and Bushmills were first class. We enjoyed all of the restaurants that Allan selected.

And we even got great weather.

I also want to say that driver Martin Woulfe of O’ Callaghan & Sons made the trip! He really took great care of us. His quick wit and sense of humor made the trip fun for all of us. He is a terrific guy and great asset to the company.

Thank you again for a great trip!

trip

Northern Ireland has two courses that feature high in the World Rankings Royal County Down and Royal Portrush.

Castlerock, Portstewart and Royal Portrush are all excellent courses located close together on the Northern Coast near Portrush.

Known as the Causeway Coast, it is close to the ‘Giants Causeway’ an extraordinary natural phenomenon and a World Heritage site.

Ballyliffen has a splendid hotel alongside two excellent links courses, Glashedy and ‘The Old Course’. It can be reached by a short ferry crossing from the Causeway coast which reduces the travel.

Royal County Down is normally in the top 10 of world rankings and often voted #1 in the UK and Ireland.

Ardglass is tricky and begins with no less than six spectacular holes laid out on top of cliffs, directly overlooking the sea, its raw, rocky and dramatic. AGS is #1 for Ireland Golf Trips .

Northern ireland, play the number 1 course in the world and ireland's only open championship venue.

While Royal County Down and Royal Portrush deservedly get all the Kudos for a Northern Ireland golf trip, many of our Golfing tourists are simply blown away by the beauty of Ardglass, Portstewart, and Castlerock. Any trip to this part of the world would not be complete without a trip to the Giants Causeway, while there is also an option to visit Bushmills distillery, The Titanic experience or various Game of Thrones locations.

See a sample Northern Ireland Tour below. We customize all tours for our clients so feel free to contact us with any specific requests.

With very limited 2024 tee-time availability, we are strongly encouraging clients to book their 2025 trips now.

Image of Ardglass Golf Club

Arrive at Belfast or Dublin airport and be greeted by Lyons Links guide. Transfer to Ardglass golf club and play what some locals refer to as "The best course in County Down". There is no doubt it is majestic however this is a tongue in cheek reference to the nearby Royal County Down which has been voted Number 1 course in the World by Golf Digest, two years running. After golf at Ardglass transfer and check-in at the luxurious Slieve Donard in Newcastle

Image of Royal County Down

Voted the Number 1 golf course in the World by Golf Digest two years running, Royal County Down is top of most peoples list wishing to come to Northern Ireland. While there is still some availability for 2019, it is very limited. Nonetheless, please contact us and we will see if we can secure tee-times for you on your preferred travel dates. After golf spend another night in the Slieve Donard.

Image of Galgorm Castle

After spending two nights in the Slieve Donard, transfer North to the magnificent Galgorm Resort and Spa. A beautiful hotel with award winning spa facilities to keep you limbered up for the challenges ahead. There is an exceptional parkland course onsite that is a regular on the European Challenge Tour and hosts the Northern Irish Amateur Open. With Portrush and Portstewart a little less than an hour away, it's the perfect base for the remainder of the tour.

Image of Portstewart Golf Club

Portstewart

The outstanding Championship Strand Course was the host for the 2017 Dubai Duty Free Irish Open. Jon Rahm, the 2017 Winner was certainly impressed, “the golf course is amazing. It’s probably one of the most beautiful golf courses I have ever seen, if not the most”. It's hard to disagree. The beauty and difficulty of the course hits you straight away with an opening tee-shot considered one of the most beautiful and challenging in golf.

Image of Castlerock Golf Club

With a recent facelift completed in 2018, Castlerock has consolidates it's status as a must visit on any North Coast Itinerary. The Mussenden course has completely altered six holes under the watchful eye of renowned golf course architect Martin Hawtree, which have been met with rave reviews. T0 those who have not played here before the holes look and feel like they have been there for centuries.

Image of Royal Portrush Golf Club

What a way to finish your dream golf trip to Northern Ireland. A simple superb golf course that receives unanimous applause from all our guests. Little wonder the golfing world is licking it's lips looking forward to the club's second hosting of The Open Championship. The Dunluce course at Royal Portrush is still the only club on the island of Ireland to host or be selected to host an Open Championship.

ni golf tours

Departure Day

The option here is to depart from Dublin or Belfast. While Belfast will mean a very short commute from your hotel, departing from Dublin airport is particularly convenient for our North American clients as guests can "pre-clear" customs, thereby ensuring ease of passage when you touch down home.  With this option it may be best to transfer to a Dublin Hotel on Day 6  of your dream trip.

Galgorm Resort and Spa

Hotel Choice

There are several options here. Most definitely the preferred option for Newcastle when playing Ardglass and Royal County Down is the Slieve Donard. If full, there are some really nice local guesthouses. Galgorm Resort and Spa is what can only be described as a four star-plus facility. In fact we can't believe it's not five-star. The alternative to Galgorm is to stay closer to Portrush in the highly rated Bushmills Inn.

McIlroy ready to return to PGA Tour policy board, and eager to enjoy his first trip to New Orleans

AVONDALE, La. (AP) — For this week, at least, Rory McIlroy is focused on “fun” during his first visit to New Orleans for the PGA Tour’s lone team event.

McIlroy and teammate Shane Lowry have their restaurant reservations booked in this city renowned for its dining scene. A stroll down Bourbon Street also is on McIlroy’s agenda, so he can “say I’ve been there and I’ve got the T-shirt and then move on. I don’t think I want to spend too much time down there.”

Soon, however, the No. 2-ranked golfer in the world will be ready to resume exerting his considerable influence over serious matters surrounding the fractured state of men’s professional golf.

McIlroy said Wednesday that he is interested in returning to the PGA Tour’s policy board, from which he resigned abruptly last November.

“I don’t think there’s been much progress made in the last eight months, and I was hopeful that there would be,” McIlroy said, alluding his goal of seeing a formalized unification of the PGA Tour and upstart, Saudi Arabia-funded LIV Golf.

“I think I could be helpful to the process,” McIlroy said. “But only if people want me involved.”

Jordan Spieth hits his tee shot on the fourth hole during the first round of the RBC Heritage golf tournament, Thursday, April 18, 2024, in Hilton Head, S.C. (AP Photo/Chris Carlson)

The PGA Tour and LIV are in merger talks, but they have been protracted, with no clear end in sight. Both tours have continued to operate independently, keeping many of the top names in golf from competing against one another for most of the golf calendar — major tournaments (Masters, US Open, British Open and PGA Championship) excepted.

Meanwhile, the PGA Tour has taken on Strategic Sports Group as a minority investor in a deal that could be worth as much as $3 billion.

Webb Simpson, one of the six player directors on the PGA Tour board and PGA Tour Enterprises board, has submitted a letter saying that he wants to resign as a player director, but only if McIlroy replaces him , according to a person who has seen the letter.

The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity Tuesday because the letter was not made public.

After his pro-am round at the Zurich Classic on Wednesday, McIlroy said he started thinking about returning to the board when Simpson approached him about it.

“I said, ‘Look, if it was something that other people wanted, I would gladly take that seat,’ and that was the conversation that we had,” McIlroy said. “I feel like I care a lot, and I have some pretty good experience and good connections within the game and sort of around the wider sort of ecosystem and everything that’s going on.

“But at the end of the day, it’s not quite up to me to just come back on the board,” he added. “There’s a process that has to be followed.”

The other board members are Patrick Cantlay, Peter Malnati, Adam Scott, Jordan Spieth and Tiger Woods.

McIlroy said he sees a completed merger of the PGA and LIV tours as “the only way forward for the game of golf.”

He said he aims to promote compromise while also trying “to help people see the benefits of what unification could do for the game and what it could do for this tour in particular.”

“We obviously realize the game is not unified right now for a reason, and there’s still some hard feelings and things that need to be addressed,” McIlroy said. “But I think at this point, for the good of the game, we all need to put those feelings aside and all move forward together.”

In the meantime, the 34-year-old McIlroy, of Northern Ireland, sounds eager to participate in what, for him, is a new event while taking in one of American’s more culturally distinctive cities.

“This is my 17th year as a professional golfer, and to be able to still do things for the first time like play in this event and experience something like this is pretty cool,” McIlroy said.

McIlroy and Shane Lowry, a 37-yearold Irishman, have been teammates before in the Ryder Cup. So, their partnership at the Zurich Classic is not entirely unfamiliar to them.

“We thought it would be fun to team up together again in something like this,” McIlroy said. “Just really excited to spend the week with Shane.

“To sort of relax and play under maybe not the amount of pressure or the stress that we’ve both been under the last couple of weeks I think is a nice thing,” McIlroy said. “It’s nice to be able to rely on a teammate every now and again and bail you out of trouble or know that you don’t have to play perfect golf because you’ve got someone right there beside you.”

Lowry, meanwhile, sounded no less excited to be able to lean on McIlroy’s game at the Pete Dye-designed TPC Louisiana, where the winning team will earn $2.57 million (about $1.29 million each).

“Rory is probably like No. 1 on people’s lists to come play here with,” Lowry said. “We’ll be good for each other on the course. We’ll enjoy doing it, which is a big part of it as well.”

McIlroy and Lowry are one of several high-profile pairs among the 80 teams at the Zurich.

Others include: 2022 champions Xander Schauffele and Patrick Cantlay; Matt Fitzpatrick and younger brother Alex; Collin Morikawa and Kurt Kitayama; Billy Horschel and Tyson Alexander; Sahith Theegala and Will Zalatoris; Fancesco Molinari and Luke Donald; and defending champions Nick Hardy and Davis Riley.

Webb Simpson offers to resign from PGA Tour board. But only if McIlroy replaces him, AP source says

A plan is in place for Rory McIlroy to rejoin the PGA Tour board, a move that would require the board's approval and could be viewed as a chance to help to improve stalled negotiations with the Saudi financial backers of LIV Golf.

McIlroy resigned from the board in November , saying he felt he could no longer commit the time and energy required with the PGA Tour trying to finalize an agreement with the Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia.

The deal with PIF was not finalized, and the PGA Tour instead took on Strategic Sports Group as a minority investor in a deal that could be worth as much as $3 billion.

Webb Simpson, one of the six player directors on the PGA Tour board and PGA Tour Enterprises board, has submitted a letter saying that he wants to resign as a player director but only if McIlroy replaces him, according to a person who has seen the letter.

The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity Tuesday because the letter was not made public. The board is expected to discuss Simpson's request as early as Wednesday.

PGA Tour Enterprises is the new commercial entity, though six players serve on both boards.

McIlroy's resignation in November required the other five player directors — Simpson, Tiger Woods, Patrick Cantlay, Adam Scott and Peter Malnati — to elect a player to serve out the term through 2024. They chose Jordan Spieth.

Some of those players have been at odds with McIlroy over the last few months because the four-time major champion has changed his tune about LIV Golf and has suggested LIV players be allowed to return to the PGA Tour without penalty.

Spieth and McIlroy disagreed in February over Spieth's comments that a deal with PIF was not needed because of the SSG investment, although it would help with unification.

The Simpson case, however, is different. He has not resigned from the board. The person said Simpson's letter said he would resign if McIlroy could replace him; otherwise, he would stay on the boards.

The person said Simpson indicated the board currently does not have a European player — five are Americans and Scott is Australian.

SSG in a consortium of American sports owners, led by the Fenway Group, and McIlroy has an affiliation with Fenway through the new TGL team league due to start play in January.

The Guardian, which first reported McIlroy's potential move back to the board , also noted McIlroy has a good relationship with Yasir Al-Rumayyan, the PIF governor.

Al-Rumayyan met with the player directors — he even played nine holes with Woods — in the Bahamas a week after The Players Championship last month. Spieth described that meeting as a chance to talk while figuring out the next step.

There have been no reports of progress since then.

A London financial newspaper, City A.M., reported last week that LIV had offered McIlroy $850 million to join, based on sources it did not identify. McIlroy quickly shot down those rumors and said he would play the PGA Tour “for the rest of my career.” But he also reiterated his hopes that golf could be unified again outside the four majors.

“The game is better when we're all together,” he said last week at the RBC Heritage.

The hurdle for any kind of a deal has been how to unify the game. Jon Rahm, Brooks Koepka, Bryson DeChambeau and Dustin Johnson are among players who signed bonuses said to be worth upward of $100 million that led to the divide.

McIlroy said last month at The Players Championship that Al-Rumayyan “wants to do the right thing” for all of golf and that LIV Commissioner Greg Norman and others have done the PIF leader a disservice.

“So the closer that we can get to Yasir, PIF and hopefully finalize that investment, I think that will be a really good thing," McIlroy said.

SSG's initial investment of $1.5 billion is for a first-of-its-kind equity ownership program. PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan said in a February memo that $750 million in aggregate equity would be granted to 36 players based on career performance, last five-year performance and Player Impact Program results.

Those players are to learn details of how much they receive this week.
