I've always loved The Whitlams but never seen live before Saturday night. Now I'm kicking myself for having waited so long. Being in a theatre, it was full seated audience but regardless, thoroughly enjoyable. Tim Friedman's voice and casual banter and engagement with the audience was on point, along with the rest of the band who also showcased their individual talent throughout the performance. The guys played most of their "Love this City" album plus all their popular faves including No Aphrodisiac, Louis Burdett, and Up Against the Wall. The staging was minimalist but the light show made up for it.

Support act Bob Evans was also fantastic, and being able to buy his double album CD for $15 plus get him to autograph it and pose for a selfie was a bonus. Great venue, good value for money and fantastic entertainment. Definitely won't be the last time I see those guys live.

The Whitlams never disappoint - always entertaining. Love their music. Tim was right - it didn't rain on them on Saturday night! It started to bucket down after they left the stage.

Although The Whitlams have been performing and writing together for over 20 years now, after seeing them perform recently at their live show, it was evident that the years have had no negative effects on the band, as their performance was tight as ever. Although they’ve seen some line up changes over the years, it hasn’t had any repercussions on the band in my opinion, except maybe the opportunity for them to keep creating new and exciting material with the influences of lots of different, talented musicians. The heavily piano lead pop rock which was the original set up of the band has somewhat altered over the years, and the addition of the brass and bass has given their sound more of a jazzy vibe, which works really well for their music.

Although the band aren’t creating music for publication right now, they played a new track at the show, which was something they’d recently been working on, and it was an incredible experience to hear something like this pre-release. They played through Little Cloud with several improvisations and alterations from the recording, which was incredible to hear live.

The Whitlams set to premiere ‘Sancho’ opener in upcoming acoustic set

Performing as the last musical act of presenter Fran Kelly's tenure as host

The Whitlams

The Whitlams ‘ Tim Freedman is set to give an exclusive acoustic performance of the opening track to the band’s upcoming seventh album, ‘Sancho’.

With a piano and six-piece string accompaniment, Freedman will perform the song tomorrow (Thursday December 2) on ABC Radio National’s Breakfast Show . It comes by special request of departing presenter Fran Kelly, who leaves the ABC show after 17 years.

As well as this, the band have announced the forthcoming release of another album cut, ‘Cambridge Three’, set for release next Friday (December 10).

Of the forthcoming single, a press release issued today (December 1) earmarked ‘Cambridge Three’ as a concept song whose prtagonist and narrator is a Soviet spy and Surveyor of the Queen’s Pictures in Buckingham Palace with a big secret.

The upcoming ‘Cambridge Three’ follows on from the release of single ‘Ballad Of Bertie Kidd’ , a six-minute epic telling an anecdotal tale of one of Australia’s most infamous career criminals, which dropped in November 2020. It marked the first new music from the Sydney indie-rockers in 14 years .

Both songs are lifted from ‘Sancho’, itself a follow-up to 2006’s double album ‘Little Cloud’.

In addition to all this excitement, The Whitlams have added new dates to their already huge ‘Gaffage And Clink Tour’ , kicking off next February. The additional dates can be found via the band’s website .

LIVE REVIEW: THE WHITLAMS Early Years ’93 – ’97 National Tour Featuring Scott Owen Of THE LIVING END

The astor theatre, perth - 27th october 2023.

4 November 2023 Nicole Jobes

the whitlams tour

The historic Astor tonight plays host to The Whitlams, forming in Newtown, Australia in 1992 They’re here tonight to take us through their early years from 1993’s ‘Introducing The Whitlams’, 1995’s ‘Undeniably The Whitlams’ and 1997’s ‘Eternal Nightcap’.

The albums that are being showcased tonight featured the distinctive double bass-playing of the late Andy Lewis, who died in 2000. Therefore, complementing The Whitlams tonight is Scott Owen, known not only from The Living End, but also for his double bass playing (& acrobatics!).

the whitlams tour

Kicking off with songs about drug addiction and suicide, Tim Freedman takes a moment to remind us they’re finishing up seven weeks of touring across Australia and whilst rehearsed, admit to feeling a little ragged! Their brutal timetable does not seem to hinder the enthusiasm they put into playing their songs and they’ve already got the crowd hooked. The double bass bringing that fantastic deep bouncy beat, the head bopping & toe tapping sitting in juxtaposition of the harsh subject matter

We’re changing tempo and having a slow-dance enticing moment whilst Tim sings, ‘She’s So Lovely’. Rising to the crescendo of the song Jak Housden’s electric guitar takes centre stage and shines, tickling his fender telecaster.

the whitlams tour

As a spotlight draws on Tim and his keys, the band exits stage right and we’re treated to a beautiful rendition of ‘The Curse Stops Here’ from their 2002 album ‘Torch the Moon’. “I don’t think the ghosts helped tonight” , retorts Tim, and whilst he says he “ fuddled his way through”,  I thought it was beautiful.

Woven between songs are honest & amusing stories, not just about where the songs originate, with tales of nights at The Gershwin & Mardi Gras experimental drug taking equalling a surprise song, but also their historical absence from Perth… $2k one-way to fly across country I might stay home too!

the whitlams tour

The night is a homage to The Whitlams and after a ‘short’ intermission of a “Perth 20 mins” we’re onto the second era of their music , bringing in a whole other dimension by the move to electric bass. ‘Royal in the Afternoon’, a personal highlight, is an example of the bendy hook-laden tracks that captured the hearts & ears of Australians.

the whitlams tour

Silence overwhelms and we are presented with the tales of Charlie (Charlie No. 1, Buy Now Pay Later (Charlie No. 2), and Charlie No. 3 ), slowly moving to a sing-along it is a poignant and touching moment, not only for fallen friends but, a moment to reflect a subject matter which, unfortunately, connects people.

We’re picked back up with classics such as ‘Melbourne’, ‘Blow Up the Pokies’, ‘Up Against a Wall’ and treated to a bass off with Scott sneaking back onto stage, having a play with Ian Peres’s locks before, picking up his double bass & fantastically playing off each other.

the whitlams tour

Following instruction from Tim, the crowd is to “stand for the next 3 minutes with no castigation from those behind you”, the energy & enthusiasm is palpable, The Whitlams complimenting each other wholly, showing their strength as a four-piece with the welcome inclusion of Scott who fits in perfectly.

With uproarious applause they finish the evening with cheers and foot stomping for more, I’m convinced encores are an opportunity just to feed musicians egos however, in this case they deserved it.

Moscow Metro

The Moscow Metro Tour is included in most guided tours’ itineraries. Opened in 1935, under Stalin’s regime, the metro was not only meant to solve transport problems, but also was hailed as “a people’s palace”. Every station you will see during your Moscow metro tour looks like a palace room. There are bright paintings, mosaics, stained glass, bronze statues… Our Moscow metro tour includes the most impressive stations best architects and designers worked at - Ploshchad Revolutsii, Mayakovskaya, Komsomolskaya, Kievskaya, Novoslobodskaya and some others.

What is the kremlin in russia?

The guide will not only help you navigate the metro, but will also provide you with fascinating background tales for the images you see and a history of each station.

And there some stories to be told during the Moscow metro tour! The deepest station - Park Pobedy - is 84 metres under the ground with the world longest escalator of 140 meters. Parts of the so-called Metro-2, a secret strategic system of underground tunnels, was used for its construction.

During the Second World War the metro itself became a strategic asset: it was turned into the city's biggest bomb-shelter and one of the stations even became a library. 217 children were born here in 1941-1942! The metro is the most effective means of transport in the capital.

There are almost 200 stations 196 at the moment and trains run every 90 seconds! The guide of your Moscow metro tour can explain to you how to buy tickets and find your way if you plan to get around by yourself.

Fun facts from our Moscow Metro Tours:

From the very first days of its existence, the Moscow Metro was the object of civil defense, used as a bomb shelter, and designed as a defense for a possible attack on the Soviet Union.

At a depth of 50 to 120 meters lies the second, the coded system of Metro-2 of Moscow subway, which is equipped with everything you need, from food storage to the nuclear button.

According to some sources, the total length of Metro-2 reaches over 150 kilometers.

The Museum was opened on Sportivnaya metro station on November 6, 1967. It features the most interesting models of trains and stations.

Coffee Ring

The first scheme of Moscow Metro looked like a bunch of separate lines. Listen to a myth about Joseph Stalin and the main brown line of Moscow Metro.

Zodiac Metro

According to some astrologers, each of the 12 stops of the Moscow Ring Line corresponds to a particular sign of the zodiac and divides the city into astrological sector.

Astrologers believe that being in a particular zadiac sector of Moscow for a long time, you attract certain energy and events into your life.

Paleontological finds

Red marble walls of some of the Metro stations hide in themselves petrified inhabitants of ancient seas. Try and find some!

  • Every day each car in  Moscow metro passes  more than 600 km, which is the distance from Moscow to St. Petersburg.
  • Moscow subway system is the  5th in the intensity  of use (after the subways of Beijing, Tokyo, Seoul and Shanghai).
  • The interval in the movement of trains in rush hour is  90 seconds .
