First, visit the UK government website and create an account. Afterwards, fill out the visa application form with details such as the dates you plan to travel, where you’ll be staying, and how much you think your trip will cost.

After completing the form, you should pay the visa application fee and upload any supporting documents required. If you’re travelling with family members, each person must complete an online application and pay the visa fees.

As part of the online application, you must book an appointment at a UK visa application centre in Pakistan. You should visit the VAC on the scheduled day to provide your biometrics, answer questions regarding your trip, and submit your documents.

The consular officer will take some time to go through your application. If successful, you will be notified via email.

Pakistan is one of the world's great adventures, and getting a visa is getting easier © Ratnakorn Piyasirisorost / Getty Images

One of Asia’s most fascinating countries, Pakistan lies off the mainstream travel map, but those who do visit rave about its historic monuments, spectacular scenery, fabulous food and richly layered culture. Visiting throws up some challenges, but it’s getting easier all the time, helped by an improving security situation and easing visa regulations.

If you’re up for the adventure of seeing one of Asia’s true frontiers, away from the tourist crowds, here’s everything you need to know about getting a visa for Pakistan.

Who needs a visa for Pakistan?

Visitors from most countries need a visa to enter Pakistan, and the rules vary from nationality to nationality. The good news is that most of the application process is now handled online. Citizens of 192 nations can apply for a visa via the Ministry of Interior’s (sometimes temperamental) visa portal . To use the system, you’ll need to register using your passport number and email address.

Can I get a visa on arrival?

Citizens of more than 60 countries, including the US, UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and most EU countries, can obtain an electronic travel authorization (ETA) online. This allows you to travel to Pakistan and obtain a visa on arrival. The application process is straightforward, but the website can be glitchy, so apply in plenty of time – at least 72 hours before you travel, and ideally a few weeks ahead.

A special 30-day tourist visa is granted on arrival for some nationalities, including citizens of Turkey, Malaysia and the United Arab Emirates. The online visa system can also be used to apply for business visas and special visas for trekking and mountaineering groups.

What are the rules for Indian travelers?

Owing to their shared colonial past,  India and Pakistan have a complicated relationship. Indian citizens have to carry out extra steps to obtain a visa for Pakistan. Tourist visas are not available, but Indian citizens can apply for visas to visit family and friends, do business, and visit religious sites.

The Pakistan government visa portal does not work in India and visa applications are typically handled by Pakistani embassies and high commissions. If you are a non-resident Indian citizen, contact your local Pakistani diplomatic mission for advice. Note that Indian citizens can only arrive and leave Pakistan via certain designated airports and land border crossings.

What information do I need for the visa application?

When you apply for a visa, you’ll be asked about your travel history and travel plans and your marital status, education, financial status, and other personal details. You’ll also need to provide various details about your father and mother. Not all of the information requested is required; a PDF guide is available to help you work out which sections you need to fill in.

When you apply for your ETA, you’ll need to upload scans of your passport and a digital passport-style photo, and pay the visa fee using a bank card. You’ll also be asked to upload “supporting documents” – for independent travelers, proof of a hotel booking should suffice. If you’re joining a tour, you’ll need a letter of invitation from the agency arranging your trip. If you’re staying with friends or family, ask them to provide a letter of invitation.

Depending on your circumstances, there’s a chance you may be asked to attend an interview at the nearest Pakistan embassy or high commission (find details for Pakistan’s overseas missions online ).

Where can I get a Visa on Arrival?

Visas are issued on arrival to travelers with valid ETAs at Pakistan’s main international airports, including Karachi , Lahore and Islamabad . The process is reasonably efficient – you’ll need to print the ETA confirmation email and carry the printout with you to show to border officials to get the necessary stamps.

Don’t rely on being able to enter Pakistan by land with an ETA (including via the Attari-Wagah border crossing between Amritsar and Lahore). If you plan to enter overland, contact your local Pakistani embassy or high commission for advice. Travelers cannot apply for an Indian visa in Pakistan; if you intend to cross back into India, make sure you have a valid multiple-entry visa for India when you enter Pakistan.

How long are visas valid for?

Three-month single-entry or multiple-entry tourist visas are fairly easy to obtain for most travelers, and longer visas valid for six months or one year are available for some nationalities. Your passport must be valid for six months beyond the date you apply, and the ETA is valid for 90 days from the date of issue, so you must travel to Pakistan within this period.

Visa fees vary depending on your nationality, the duration of the visa, and the number of entries. British and American citizens pay US$60/90 for a three-month tourist visa (single/multiple entry), while German citizens pay US$50/75 and French citizens pay US$35/52.50. Check the fee for your nationality using the online fee calculator .

Can I get a visa extension?

Theoretically, tourist visas can be extended for up to six months but approval isn’t guaranteed. The best time to apply is a few weeks before the end of your existing visa, via the Ministry of the Interior . If you are traveling with a Visa on Arrival, you may be able to apply for an extension via the government’s visa portal.

Off-limits areas of Pakistan

Even with a visa, some parts of Pakistan are inaccessible to travelers unless you have special permission from the government. This includes areas close to the borders with China and Afghanistan and districts close to the Line of Control – the de facto border between India and Pakistan in the disputed territory of Azad Kashmir.

The same rule used to cover many other parts of the country, but in 2019, the government of Imran Khan relaxed the requirement for official permission to visit areas such as the Swat Valley and Chitral. However, the rules are in constant flux, so check locally to see if permission is currently required.

To visit restricted areas of the country, you’ll need to obtain a No Objection Certificate from the Pakistan Ministry of Interior. Application forms can be downloaded online but it may be easier to arrange a trip through a local tour agency so they can help with the paperwork.

Don’t rely on being able to obtain permission to travel close to Pakistan’s borders. The government maintains a list of prohibited areas that are currently closed to certain nationalities (and hard to reach for other nationalities too).

Presenting your documents in Pakistan

Wherever you travel in Pakistan, you’ll need to show your passport and visa periodically at police checkposts, so make photocopies of each and keep these handy. You’ll also need to register with the local authorities to visit many areas, including Gilgit-Baltistan on the Karakoram Highway .

Travelers may also be required to take a police escort to visit certain locations, including parts of Sindh and southern Punjab. While having an armed entourage might sound alarming, this is usually done out of an overabundance of caution, rather than because there is a serious danger.

This said, it’s a good policy to monitor travel advisory notices from your home government for the current trouble spots. If your government warns against “all travel” to a specific location in Pakistan, your travel insurance will probably not be valid if you do visit.

Pakistan Tourist Visa for UK Citizens – Visa Guide for British Citizen

Do you know that British citizens are required to get a Pakistan tourist visa to travel to that South Asian country?

What do we know about Pakistan, exactly? Well aside from the fact that it’s one of India’s neighbouring countries and other stories that make it to the international news, we rarely hear anything about it.

Did you know that with its size, it’s actually one of the 6th most populous? Or did you know that up until 1956, Queen Elizabeth was the Queen of Pakistan? You probably didn’t, right?

UK Passport Holder Visa Guide Tips on How a British Citizen Can Get a Tourist Visa to Pakistan1

Pakistan, as mentioned earlier, is a country lying just beside India. Its other neighbouring countries are Iran , China , Afghanistan, and Nepal . This country is officially known as the Islamic Republic of Pakistan and is the only country in the world which was established based on religion.

UK Passport Holder Visa Guide Tips on How a British Citizen Can Get a Tourist Visa to Pakistan1

Pakistan, like its neighbor India, was part of the British Empire in the East until it gained its independence in 1947 under the Indian Independence Act. After that, it still was under British rule until it finally became a separate Republic in 1956. 4. Is Pakistan safe for tourists?

Pakistan’s name might resonate to some as one of the countries that you should avoid visiting, but in reality, the vast majority of the country is pretty safe for travelers. This is especially true if you are part of an organized group tour since the companies have already gone through the places their offering tours.

However, for your safety, it’s still important to listen to the UK Government’s advice with regards to traveling to some areas within Pakistan. According to the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, here are the places you must avoid when in Pakistan:

  • the areas in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Province (formerly known as the Federally Administered Tribal Areas)
  • the districts of Charsadda, Kohat, Tank, Bannu, Lakki, Dera Ismail Khan, Swat, Buner and Lower Dir in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa
  • the city of Peshawar and districts south of the city, including travel on the Peshawar to Chitral road via the Lowari Pass
  • northern and western Balochistan Province
  • travel on the Karakoram Highway between Islamabad and Gilgit
  • the immediate vicinity of the Line of Control

You must also avoid traveling to the following places unless needed:

  • Kalash Valley, the Bumburet Valley and Arandu District to the south and west of Chitral in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa
  • the city of Quetta
  • areas of Sindh Province north of, and including, the city of Nawabshah

This is because there are still some terrorist activities within some parts of the country. But, as mentioned earlier, the tour operators within Pakistan have made sure that the places they will bring you to are all safe for tourists so you have nothing to worry about.

5. Do I still need to get insurance before I travel to Pakistan?

The UK Government suggests that you still get a comprehensive medical and travel insurance before traveling to Pakistan.

6. How do I get to Pakistan from the UK?

You may fly directly to Islamabad from London via British Airways and Pakistan International Airlines. Other major airlines also fly to and from the two cities with a few stopovers.

You may also enter Pakistan through the Wagah border if you are coming from India. Just make sure that you have all the required documents to make your entry smooth and hassle-free.

Other points of entry that you may consider are the Taftan Border (Iran) and Khunjerab Pass (China).

7. Are there any regulations in Pakistan when it comes to dressing up?

When traveling in Pakistan, most people advise that you wear comfortable clothing due to the climate. It’s pretty hot in Pakistan, especially in the summer, so you’d like to wear something that will keep you cool throughout the day. A pair of jeans and a loose-fitting shirt should be fine.

It’s also important to pay respects when visiting mosques so it’s good to have a scarf handy (at least for women) when you travel.

Other than that, most people in the larger cities wear Western-style clothing so you don’t have to worry about that!

8. When is the best time to visit Pakistan?

That depends on where you wish to travel. In general, the best time to visit is from May-October as the weather’s pretty dry and warm.

If you’re planning on visiting during the cooler season, which is perfect if you want to go to the Northwestern parts of Pakistan, you can go from October to February.

9. What currency should I bring? Can I bring my credit card?

US Dollars are the most widely accepted foreign currency in this country but you may bring British Pounds and Euro with you as well to be exchanged in banks in the bigger cities.

You may also use major credit cards like AMEX, MasterCard, and Visa when paying at hotels, and any other major establishments.

10. How do I get around Pakistan?

If your part of an organized tour, they will most likely provide you with transportation as part of their package. However, if you’re not, you may travel by renting a car and a driver (it’s a bit dangerous to drive on your own around here), getting on a bus or hailing a taxi. Just remember that when riding a cab, you have to make sure that you’re on a meter or have already agreed to a certain price.

11. Why should I visit Pakistan?

The real question is, why are you not visiting Pakistan yet? This country has so much to offer everyone that it’s honestly a waste not to see it at least once in your life!

First of all, Pakistan is full of historical sites that will leave the history buff in you in awe. Places like the Lahore Fort, the Baltit Fort, the Rohtas Fort will give you a glimpse into the old life of the people in Pakistan. These attractions which have been built over centuries ago once played an important role in the country’s history.

You may also get on an Indus Valley (where one of the world’s oldest civilizations was once located) tour. See Karachi and visit their National Museum for yourself where the ruins of this great civilization are exhibited. You may also take a trip to Mohenjo-Daro, one of the most important cities of the Indus Civilization and a UNESCO World Heritage site.

If you are up for some adrenaline-pumping adventures, you can go climbing in the Karakorum mountains or the westernmost peak of the Himalayas called Nanga Parbat.

Looking for some desert adventure? Pakistan has that, too! Drive off to the Cholistan Desert and experience going around on the back of a camel-like the one you see in movies.

Of course, no trip to this country will be complete without the mouthwatering cuisine! This country is rich in spices that make their food stand out from the rest. Try curries, grilled meat, biryanis, fruits… you name it! You surely won’t go hungry when you’re in Pakistan.

Lastly, people. Pakistanis are some of the most hospitable and accommodating people you will ever meet as a traveler. Often times, when you go around town, you’ll be rewarded with a warm smile.

Pakistan may not always be painted as an ideal tourist spot, especially by the media. However, if you just take a look beneath all the stories you see and hear, you’ll find out that this bustling country may just be your next favorite vacation spot!

Israel-Gaza latest: Israel's ambassador shreds 'copy of UN charter' on stage - as UN General Assembly opens door for Palestinian membership

Israel's ambassador to the UN used a paper shredder to shred the UN charter on stage at the UN General Assembly - ahead of a vote in which the assembly opted to open the door for Palestine to be given full membership.

Hamas has said it will hold talks with leaders of what it called "Palestinian resistance factions" to reconsider its negotiation strategy.

It said the discussions need to be held due to Benjamin Netanyahu's behaviour, Israeli attacks on places in Rafah and the occupation of the city's border crossing with Egypt.

"Netanyahu and his government are using the negotiations as a cover to attack Rafah and occupy the crossing, and continue the war of extermination against our people, and they bear full responsibility for obstructing reaching an agreement," the statement said.

Earlier this week, the Hamas supreme leader said he had expressed his agreement over a ceasefire deal in a phone call with Qatar's prime minister and Egypt's intelligence minister.

Israel later put an end to this, saying it would not accept the deal in its current form, a decision Hamas said today had brought things "back to square one".

At least 34,943 Palestinians have been killed in Israeli strikes on Gaza since 7 October, the Hamas-run health ministry has said.

It said a further 78,572 have been injured.

Figures from the health ministry do not differentiate between troops and civilians.

Following on from our last post, Israel's ambassador to the United Nations Gilad Erdan has shredded "a copy of the UN charter" as the agency's general assembly voted on whether to support a bid by Palestine to become a full member of the United Nations.

Standing in front of the assembly in New York, Mr Erdan held up a small shredder and put three pieces of paper into it - which had the words "charter of the United Nations" written on it.

He was heard saying: "You are shredding the UN charter... Shame on you."

His actions came moments before the 193-member world body approved the resolution, giving Palestine new "rights and privileges".

The UN also recommended the Security Council to favourably reconsider Palestine's request for full membership.

The United Nations General Assembly has backed a Palestinian bid to become a full member of the UN.

The assembly voted to grant new "rights and privileges" to Palestine and has called on the UN security council to favourably reconsider its request for membership.

Although it does not give Palestine full UN membership, the vote recognises them as qualified to join.

It also allows them to introduce and co-sponsor proposals as well as amendments within the assembly.

The 193-member world body approved the resolution - brought by the United Arab Emirates and Palestine - with a vote of 143 in favour, nine against and 25 abstentions.

Israel's foreign minister hit out at the decision, calling it a "prize for Hamas".

While Palestine's President Mahmoud Abbas said the country would "continue its endeavour" to obtain full UN membership.

The Israeli military has announced the death of four soldiers fighting in Gaza.

The soldiers were all killed after an explosive device went off in an alleyway in the Zeitoun neighbourhood of Gaza City, according to The Times of Israel.

It said all four were 19 years old.

Another officer and soldier were reportedly seriously wounded.

The incident occurred while troops were raiding a school complex where the military had indications of Hamas activity, The Times of Israel reported.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has recorded a video message of support for Israel's Eurovision entry, Eden Golan.

The 20-year-old singer will perform at the grand finale of the competition in Malmo, Sweden, on Saturday.

Recording a message addressed to Golan, Mr Netanyahu says: "I want to wish you success. You know what you've already succeeded.

"Not only are you competing at Eurovision... you are competing with an ugly wave of antisemitism. And you are standing up to it."

The prime minister appears to reference the pro-Palestinian protests that have overwhelmed Malmo in the last few days, calling for Israel to be banned from the competition due to its actions in Gaza.

Watch the full message from Mr Netanyahu below.

Israeli tanks have effectively encircled the entire eastern side of Rafah after troops captured the main road dividing the eastern and western parts of the city, according to the Reuters news agency.

By taking control of the Salahuddin road, Israel has completed the encirclement of the "red zone" where they have ordered residents to evacuate, the news agency said.

The Israeli military has already sealed off eastern Rafah from the south, and also taken control of the only crossing between the enclave and Egypt.

It claims its forces in eastern Rafah located several tunnels and killed several Hamas troops "during close-quarters combat and with an aerial strike", Reuters reports.

The prospect of an assault on Rafah this week has caused a divide between Israel and its closest ally the US, which has threatened to block weapons shipments.

A paramedic and an employee of a telecommunications company have been killed in a drone strike on a southern Lebanese village, state-run media has reported.

It comes amid an increase in military activities along the frontier in recent days.

State-run National News said the paramedic and the technician died in the drone strike on Teir Harafa, about two miles from the border with Israel.

The Islamic Risala Scout Association paramedic group said one of its members, Ghaleb Hussein al Haj, was killed while performing his duties in south Lebanon.

The reported strike came a day after a similar attack on a car in a southern Lebanese village killed four members of the militant Hezbollah group.

Hezbollah started attacking Israeli army posts along the Lebanon-Israel border a day after the Israel-Hamas war broke out on 7 October.

Since then, more than 350 people have been killed in Lebanon, including 275 Hezbollah members and more than 70 civilians and non-combatants. In Israel, 15 soldiers and 10 civilians have died.

Foreign officials have been visiting Lebanon over the past month in attempts to bring calm to the border, but Hezbollah has repeatedly said it will not stop fighting until there is a ceasefire in Gaza.

A selection of the images emerging from Rafah offers a glimpse into the plight of Palestinians in the Gazan city.

Photographs show a child and women weeping as they mourned the loss of his father, who was killed in an Israeli airstrike.

A separate image shows a child arriving in hospital in Rafah after being wounded in the bombardment of the city.

Despite Benjamin Netanyahu's defiant rhetoric since Joe Biden threatened the US would pause arms supplies to Israel (see 6.51 post), the planned full-scale offensive on Rafah that prompted the move does appear to have been placed on hold for now.

However, Axios is now reporting that Israel's war cabinet has approved an "expansion of the area of operation" by the IDF in Rafah.

The news outlet cited two sources as saying this was a "measured expansion" that did not cross the US president's red line - although a third source said the approved action includes actions that "could be interpreted by the US as crossing Biden's red line".

All three of the sources suggested the cabinet also instructed the Israeli negotiating team to continue talks in an effort to reach a deal for the release of the Israeli hostages' release - while reporting that far-right ministers Itamar Ben Gvir and Bezalel Smotrich voted against the decision.
