Scotrail trains.

First ScotRail operates all domestic passenger trains within Scotland and the cross-border Caledonian Sleeper service to London .

Providing services throughout Scotland and reaching across the Scottish border to Newcastle and Carlisle in the north of England, First ScotRail is a popular choice for express services between Scotland's major cities of Edinburgh , Glasgow , Inverness , Dundee and Aberdeen . You may use moneysaving split train tickets on all Scotrail train routes.

As well as serving Scotland's big cities, First ScotRail also operates the scenic Highland Main Line, which connects Inverness to the south through the picturesque Scottish Highlands, ideal for passengers to Fort William , Oban and Mallaig , Kyle of Loclash and Wick .

First ScotRail also offers sleeper services from Scotland to London, please check with ScotRail if you wish to book a sleeping berth on their trains.

Cyclists are welcomed on all First ScotRail services, with between two and eight cycle spaces for use on each route. However, cyclists should note that cycle reservations are required for services from Glasgow and Edinburgh to Aberdeen, Glasgow and Edinburgh to Inverness, Aberdeen to Inverness, Glasgow to Oban, Fort William and Mallaig, Inverness to Kyle of Lochalsh, Wick and Thurso, and Newcastle and Glasgow to Stranraer.

Splitting Your Train Tickets on Scotrail Trains is allowed and is when you purchase separate tickets for two or more sectors of the Scotrail Trains rail route you wish to travel instead of just one more expensive through ticket without affecting your travel options in any way.

For example, if you wanted to travel on Scotrail Trains from Station A to Station D, you would expect to buy a ticket direct from A to D. However, you may find it a lot cheaper to buy a ticket from A to B, and another from B to C and still another from C to D for a cheaper combined train ticket price. This is especially true when not all sectors of your journey are during peak time.

So, by buying several tickets that in combination make up your whole Scotrail Trains route, you could massively reduce your travel cost and you will still travel on the same Scotrail train, at the same time and most probably in the same seat but pay a lot less by using split tickets. This is what split ticketing on Scotrail Trains is all about.

You may use split train tickets for travel on all Scotrail Trains.

Will there be train strikes on Saturday? How an overtime ban may affect your journey

Rail passengers in the UK face further disruption in May amid more train strikes .

Aslef union members at 16 rail companies voted overwhelmingly to strike on different days after eight participated in strikes in April.

The union’s general secretary, Mick Whelan , said of the action voted on in February: “It is now a year since we sat in a room with the train companies — and a year since we rejected the risible offer they made and which they admitted, privately, was designed to be rejected.

“Our members voted overwhelmingly — yet again — for strike action. Those votes show — yet again — a clear rejection by train drivers of the ridiculous offer put to us in April last year by [train operators’ body] the Rail Delivery Group which knew that offer would be rejected because of a land grab for all the terms and conditions we have negotiated over the years would never be accepted by our members.

“We have given the Government every opportunity to come to the table but it is now clear they do not want to resolve this dispute. They are happy for it to go on and on.”

But will there be more train strikes on Saturday (May 11)?

Here’s what you need to know before planning your rail travel.

Will there be train strikes on Saturday?

The good news is no. Strikes have occurred this week, though, on the following days and services.

Tuesday, May 7  – c2c, Gatwick Express, Greater Anglia (which includes Stansted Express), Great Northern, Southeastern, Southern, South Western Railway including the Island line) and Thameslink.

Wednesday, May 8  - Avanti West Coast, Chiltern Railways, CrossCountry, East Midlands Railway, Great Western Railway, Heathrow Express, London Northwestern Railway and West Midlands Railway.

Thursday, May 9  - LNER, Northern and TransPennine Express.

There will, however, be an overtime ban on all train companies from Monday, May 6 to Saturday, May 11.

What is an overtime ban and is it different from a strike?

An overtime ban is a form of industrial action where workers refuse to work overtime hours to put pressure on their employers during labour disputes. Trade unions commonly use this tactic to protest against unfavourable working conditions, pay, or other issues.

In the context of train strikes in the UK, an overtime ban could occur when railway workers, such as train drivers, conductors, or maintenance staff, refuse to work overtime shifts beyond their contracted hours. This can disrupt the normal operation of train services, particularly if overtime is relied upon to cover staffing shortages or to maintain regular service levels during peak times or emergencies.

An overtime ban differs from a strike in that workers continue to perform their regular contracted duties but refuse to work additional hours beyond that. In contrast, a strike involves workers refusing to work altogether, often leading to the complete shutdown of services or operations.

How will the overtime ban affect travel?

“On the days where full strike action is taking place, this is likely to result in little or no services across large areas of the network operated by the affected train companies,” the National Rail website says. “Services are also likely to be disrupted and start later on the day immediately following a full strike day.

“Passengers are warned to expect significant disruption and advised to plan ahead and check before you travel.”

You can check your journey for the industrial action dates with the National Rail Enquiries real-time  Journey Planner .

Are there more train or Tube strikes planned?

On Friday, May 3, RMT union members announced that strike action would take place affecting ScotRail services on some routes on the following weekends:

Saturday, May 8 and Sunday, May 19

Saturday, May 25 and Sunday, May 26

Saturday, June 1 and Sunday, June 2

No more Tube strikes are planned following the TSSA strikes on April 26.

An expert lays out the United Methodist Church's journey to end its LGBTQ ban

A tight close-up photo shows a person's torso bearing a campaign-style button with the word "CHAPLAIN" and colors identified with the Trans Pride flag, as well as two lanyards, one of them with colors of the rainbow and the other royal blue.

After years of internal division, the United Methodist Church has reversed its 40 year ban on LGBTQ clergy and same-sex marriage. The issue had become so contentious in recent years that the United Methodist Church lost more than 7,000 congregations since 2019, with many departing over their stances toward LGBTQ people.

GBH's All Things Considered host Arun Rath spoke about this shift with Graham Kelder, who teaches religion, politics and law at Suffolk University, and who is a member of the Methodist Church himself.

Arun Rath: So as I mentioned, this has been a divisive issue within the church for quite a while. Can you talk us through a bit of the recent history and how it's been affecting the church overall?

Graham Kelder: The church formed from two different denominations in 1968. In 1972, that's when the language appeared saying that homosexuality was incompatible with Christian teaching. Then in 1984, the language was inserted saying that practicing homosexuals couldn't be ordained as clergy.

In 2019, a plan passed called “The Traditional Plan,” and that made the penalties for violating these rules stiffer and reinforced the policy. But the 2019 Special Conference, which was focused solely on issues of sexuality, also created a disaffiliation plan whereby congregations could leave the United Methodist Church over issues of conscience related to sexuality. So that's when congregations began leaving—once that took effect. That process accelerated in 2022 when conservatives formed the Global Methodist Church.

Rath: So put that in perspective for us. Over 7,000 congregations lost since 2019 — that sounds like a pretty massive shift.

Kelder: Yeah, it's about maybe 25% or so of the church's membership, so it is significant. The disagreements between the United Methodist Church and those who have disaffiliated run a little deeper and across issues like: How should you read the Bible? Should you read it with an historical critical eye or should you read it somewhat literally?

Those interpretive strategies basically gave rise to this conflict because I think most New Testament scholars and most biblical scholars think that the prohibitions in the Bible on homosexuality are, by and large, in the purity code and not in the morality code. The ancient Hebrews had the idea that you shouldn't mix things that didn't belong together. So you shouldn't wear garments made of mixed fabrics. You shouldn't touch the skin of a pig. And the taboo on homosexuality is first enunciated in the purity code.

Rath: So with this shift now, and we should point out that the shift is not just about LGBTQ clergy, but also about same sex unions?

Kelder: Yes, the shift removes the language saying that homosexuality is incompatible with Christian teaching. It lifts the prohibition on clergy performing same sex unions, and it lifts the prohibition on ordaining practicing homosexuals. Basically, these changes sweep away all of the longstanding prohibitions on homosexual behavior.

Rath: So do we expect that these 7000-plus congregations will now come back, or how do you think this will affect things going forward?

Kelder: I don't think that most of those congregations will come back because many of them disaffiliated purposely because they were tired of fighting about these issues. And they wanted to form a purely conservative Methodist church and so they formed the Global Methodist Church.

There may be a few congregations that disaffiliated on the progressive side and those congregations will probably come back. But basically, the General Conference this year also passed a resolution openly inviting any congregation that's disaffiliated to come back if they wish to.

Rath: On the other side, is there any indication or concern that congregations who might not like this change might now want to split away?

Kelder: Disaffiliation is officially over with, the policy that allowed for that to happen in a “no muss, no fuss” way. Some congregations may seek to leave the Methodist church, but that's going to be a much more complicated procedure because official disaffiliation ended at the end of 2023.

The whole issue is not really completely over with yet, because we passed a regionalization clause which allows churches to adapt the discipline to the region that they're in. One of those regions is Africa, where homosexuality is a deeply ingrained cultural taboo. So congregations in Africa are going to be able to adapt the discipline to their cultural setting. But many of the pastors in Africa were upset by what the General Conference did this year.

Rath: Is your sense in terms of the long view on this, that even if the congregations that split away don't come back, can the Methodist Church grow now, as a result of this?

Kelder: Yeah, I was involved in the litigation against the tobacco industry and in tobacco regulation as an attorney. And while we were engaged in that work, studies showed that when restaurants prohibited smoking, they actually got customers coming to that restaurant who didn't like tobacco smoke. So I think that people who were dismayed by the church's longstanding rules against homosexuals may now feel free to join the church.

Hopefully, the church can put that issue behind us and I think that would get some people to join. My older sister is gay, and I had to think a lot about joining the Methodist church, knowing that the prohibitions were there. But I felt hopeful enough about them being relaxed at some point that I was comfortable with joining.

Rath: Well, this is fascinating. Thank you so much for your expertise and insight.

Kelder: Thank you.

Hundreds journey up Moose Mountain to protest west Bragg Creek logging plan

Hundreds gathered at the site of a proposed logging project in west Bragg Creek, just outside Kananaskis Country, calling for the protection of the area.

The group hiked and biked up Moose Mountain to protest in one of the spaces that could be clear-cut, one night after more than 650 people gathered at a public feedback event in Cochrane held by the logging company.

"These actions can feel like you are shouting in a vacuum when it's primarily online-organized, and so this lets people know how many other people care about these trails, lets them feel a part of something," said Jeff Woodgate, Grow Kananaskis founder.

West Fraser bought rights to the timber licence last fall when it bought out Spray Lakes Sawmills in Cochrane and plans to log 450 hectares of forests, including a dozen hiking and mountain bike trails impacting up to 30 kilometres of track.

"We use that space all the time. It represents what Alberta represents to us," said Caroline Fisher, who created signs for the protest as well.

The land is not protected.

That's why Albertans who love to hike, bike, snowshoe and ski here are speaking up.

"We're wondering if the name of conservation pass should perhaps be changed to resource extraction pass because it seems like all of our natural areas are open for resource extraction."

West Fraser said it welcomes feedback and it might protect some views and trails.

The cut would not go ahead until 2026, which gives opponents some hope.

Aside from the environmental impact, protesters say there was minimal consultation with or consideration for local businesses.

Trail and traffic counters in Kananaskis show about 300,000 people visit each year.

Former Ohio State linebacker Steele Chambers takes next step in NFL journey | Oller

plan a journey scotrail

This is the final in a series of stories on Steele Chambers’ quest to continue his football career in the NFL. The former Ohio State linebacker , who went undrafted last month, recently signed as a free agent with the Detroit Lions and reports to the team's rookie mini-camp Thursday in Detroit.

Steele Chambers at least was comforted by one of his best friends when the bad news dropped.

As the NFL draft wound down last month, and Chambers’ name still had not been called, the former Ohio State linebacker took some solace in spending the last few hours with his most trusted companion, Maverick, the Siberian Husky.

“I wasn’t watching the draft.” Chambers said. “I was sitting on a rock at the ( Chattahoochee River in Georgia). Me and my dog. You just want to be drafted. It’s what you work for. Just disappointed.”

Chambers was down but not out. As the sixth round gave way to the seventh, and the seventh trickled to its end, Chambers’ agent, Michael Perrett, worked the phones to get his client signed as a free agent . Within hours of the draft packing up and leaving Detroit, Chambers was preparing to enter the Motor City. The 23-year-old signed with the Detroit Lions to play linebacker and serve on special teams.

In at least one way, Chambers came out ahead. He got to pick his team.

“It just sucked not getting drafted, but I took a walk, realized the situation I was in and, ‘Time to move on to Detroit,’” Steele said. “My agent told me different options, and Detroit sounded like the best one. He said they were pretty enthusiastic over the phone, that they would be happy to have me there. And the money stuff made sense.”

Chambers did not want to disclose terms of his contract, but the average rookie free agent gets paid about $1,000 per week during training camp and about $750,000 if he makes the active roster or is signed to the practice squad.

Chambers signed a “phenomenal” deal with Detroit, Perrett said, with “guarantees in the contract that are better than a seventh rounder.”

Plan B was not music to Steele Chambers' ears

That is somewhat small consolation to Steele, who trained in Florida for months in hopes of hearing his name called during the draft.

“Once it hit the seventh round, my agent called and talked about plan B. I didn’t like hearing that, but that’s the reality of it,” Chambers said.

What happened?

“He was very close to getting drafted. We just ran out of picks,” Perrett said.

It did not help that Chambers, at 6-foot, 230 pounds, is considered small for an NFL linebacker. He has above-average speed, and led the Buckeyes with 83 tackles last season, but the NFL falls into cookie cutter mode on draft day. If you don’t fit the physical mold of a typical linebacker, you become a higher-risk option.

No matter. Chambers is not a chip-on-the-shoulder type, but admitted he is out to prove he should have been drafted like his college roommates, tight end Cade Stover (fourth round by Houston) and linebacker Tommy Eichenberg ( fifth round by Las Vegas).

He'll begin that effort Thursday with the Lions’ rookie mini-camp.

Detroit offers a few Ohio State connections, including offensive linemen Taylor Decker and former linebacker Chris Spielman, who is special assistant to team president and CEO Rod Wood.

Chris Spielman proved doubters wrong

Spielman proved doubters wrong coming out of Ohio State. Critics pointed out his lack of speed as reason he would struggle in the NFL, but his instincts and toughness helped him become Detroit’s all-time leader in career tackles (1,138).

Chambers becomes a free-agent steal if he can match even half of Spielman’s production.

Not that he’s interested in creating a legacy just yet. True to his propensity to live in the moment, the Georgia native said he just wants to grind out a spot on Detroit's roster, which he realizes is no sure thing.

“One thing I’ve learned is that nothing is guaranteed in life,” he said. “I’m just going in with the goal of making the team and having an impact any way I can.”

And if it doesn’t work out? He left OSU with a finance degree.

“Maybe something in real estate,” he said. “Or something involving broadcasting. I know my mom talked to Urban Meyer about it about four or five months ago. He said to give him a call.”

The No. 1 goal remains to play in the NFL. Chambers heads to Detroit this week prepared to make it happen. The Lions will put him up in a hotel and feed him. The rest is up to him. The draft did not work out, but the dream continues.

‘Peewee’ Jarrett’s Incredible Journey To The New York Jets

Matthew postins | may 4, 2024.

  • New York Jets

Tucked among the list of 17 New York Jets undrafted free agents for this weekend’s mini-camp was West Florida quarterback Byron Jarrett Jr.

NFL teams take chances on Division II quarterbacks at this time of year. Jarrett will have a hard time making the final 53-man roster.

But that’s nothing new for the Des Moines, Iowa, native they call “Peewee.”

Jarrett’s journey to the Jets is certainly not linear. He was good enough at Hoover High School to pass for 5,000 career yards, 50 touchdowns and set a school record for passing yards in a game with 547.

But as he told KCCI-TV in Des Moines, he didn’t receive a single Division I, II or III offer.

“Zero offers, zero stars,” Jarrett said.

A metro kid, who had no DI, DII, or DIII offers, turned pro. Former Des Moines Hoover quarterback Byron “Peewee” Jarrett signed with the New York Jets. Crazy story on how he did it! @KCCINews @DMHuskies @nyjets @byron_jarrett pic.twitter.com/muw3V42CeU — Shannon Ehrhardt (@SEhrhardtKCCI) May 1, 2024

Jarrett found a home with Ellsworth (Iowa) Community College, but only played seven games before tearing his labrum.

After his first surgery, he lost his grandmother. Then he needed another surgery. Before he could get back on the field COVID-19 shut down college football in 2020 and it was especially hard on junior colleges.

At his lowest point, Jarrett considered quitting football and getting a job. He found no sympathy from an unlikely source.

“I called my dad looking for, like, comfort in the situation and my dad just hung up in my face,” Jarrett said.

So, he transferred to Iowa Central in 2021 and threw for 2,704 yards and 30 touchdowns while earning NJCAA First Team All-America, ICCAC Offensive Player of the Year and First Team All-ICCAC honors. He and the Tritons went 9-2.

That season got West Florida interested. The Pensacola, Fla., based program started in 2016 and quickly became a national power, winning the Division II crown in 2019.

In 2022 Jarrett threw for 2,719 yards and 33 touchdowns, and rushed for a school-record 762 yards for a quarterback, along with nine touchdowns. The Argonauts went 12-2 and finished No. 4 in the country, losing to Ferris State in the national semifinals.

Last season he threw for 2,552 yards and 25 touchdowns, rushed for another 233 yards and three touchdowns, while UWF went 8-4 and lost in the first round of the playoffs.

On the final night of the draft, Jarrett sat with his family and took the phone call from the Jets, signing him to a UDFA contract. Now 6-4, 240 pounds, he at least he has a chance.

“I didn't know where I was gonna end up really,” he said. “I didn't know if I was gonna be drafted, undrafted, you know? I talked to every team within the past two years and you know I knew something good was gonna happen.”
