Slipknot: Prepare for Hell tour, SSE Arena, Wembley - music review

prepare for hell tour slipknot songs

Laughed at as a novelty act for their silly fetish masks and shouty metal, Slipknot have risen from the backwoods of Iowa to globe-straddling popularity. Needless to say, nobody is laughing now: their current and fifth album, 5: The Grey Chapter, topped the American charts and reached No 2 here.

Although Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea attended their Manchester show, Slipknot have still to adjust to eating at the top table. They couldn’t be bothered with crowd-friendly screens, and while such contempt for their audience may have saved a few cents, it lost them the back half of the venue. Nevertheless, they were a visual feast for everyone else. Stage left and right, hyperactive percussionists Shawn “Clown” Crahan and Chris Fehn rose, fell and rotated on giant hydraulic plinths; there were rivers of fire; there was running about and the fortysomethings’ energy fed and fed off the frenzied, sell-out crowd.

Not entirely in on their own joke and unaware of their magnificent ridiculousness, they offered communion for those who identified with the opening XIX’s “nobody feels like me” line. Meanwhile, singer Corey Taylor’s sweary “you’re my family” blather was lapped up by a crowd who moshed liked there was no tomorrow, who bawled along to the charming People = Shit and who punched the air like Olympic champions during Three Nil.

Strangers to nuance (a variation in pace would have spoiled things), the nontet dropped their unyielding, unremittingly nihilist noisebomb at turned-to-11 volume. If it mostly felt like being inside a washing machine on spin cycle, so what? Everyone would benefit from seeing Slipknot at least once. But no more than once.

Slipknot and Korn begin first night of ‘Prepare For Hell’ tour in Sheffield

UK leg began at Motorpoint Arena last night (January 16)

Masked heavy metal icons Slipknot promised to “make up for lost time” as they launched their first full UK tour for more than six years in Sheffield last night.

Flames began to erupt on stage and the goat’s eyes began to flash menacingly during ‘The Heretic Anthem’, while gas mask-wearing turntablist Sid Wilson dangled from his DJ booth and leapt repeatedly from the raised gangway surrounding the band.

Vocalist Corey Taylor told the crowd: “It has been far, far, far too fucking long but Slipknot is back with all of you tonight. We’re going to make up for lost time.”

Last night’s show at the Motorpoint Arena in Sheffield was the first UK date of Slipknot’s Prepare For Hell Tour, which features nu-metal architects Korn as the main support.

Korn delved deep into their archive for their performance, opening with ‘Twist’ from 1996 album ‘Life Is Peachy’ and closing with a powerful version of debut single ‘Blind’. Their set also had tracks from the band’s late ’90s and early ’00s heydey, including ‘Here To Stay’ and ‘Freak On A Leash’, as well as a version of ‘Shoots And Ladders’ that started with frontman Jonathan Davis on bagpipes and ended with the band covering a section of Metallica’s ‘One’.

Slipknot’s set also spanned their back catalogue, with tracks from their 1999 self-titled debut sitting in the setlist alongside cuts from their latest record. ‘.5: The Gray Chapter’, released last year, was Slipknot’s first album since the death of bassist Paul Gray in 2010.

The Prepare For Hell Tour is their first run of UK dates with their new touring bass player, British musician Alessandro Venturella. Drummer Joey Jordison, who left Slipknot in 2013, is replaced by Jay Weinberg, son of Max Weinberg, the long-serving drummer in Bruce Springsteen’s E Street Band.

This year marks 20 years since Crahan and Gray formed Slipknot in Des Moines, Iowa. Introducing the band’s 2001 single ‘Left Behind’, taken from the album the band named after their home state, Taylor asked the crowd: “How would you like to go back to Iowa tonight?”

During ‘Spit It Out’, security staff could be seen side of stage, dealing with what appeared to be a fan attempting to reach the band. In the centre, Taylor commanded the 13,000-strong crowd to sit on the floor, ready to spring into action when the song kicked back in.

“I’ve seen a million fucking bands emulate this but they never, ever imitate it the way we put it on,” he said. “On my signal, unleash hell.”

The UK leg of the Prepare For Hell Tour, which also has Michigan metal band King 180 on the bill, concludes in Birmingham on Tuesday 27 January. Slipknot will return to the UK to headline Download Festival at Donington Park, 12-14 June.

Slipknot played:

‘Sarcastrophe’ ‘The Heretic Anthem’ ‘My Plague’ ‘The Devil In I’ ‘Psychosocial’ ‘The Negative One’ ‘Eeyore’ ‘Liberate’ ‘Frail Limb Nursery’ ‘Purity’ ‘Before I Forget’ ‘Duality’ ‘Left Behind’ ‘Spit It Out’ ‘Custer’ ‘(sic)’ ‘People = Shit’ ‘Surfacing’ http://link.brightcove.com/services/player/?bctid=697217834001

Prepare for hell tour.

The tour made it through my neck of the woods at the end of the US leg last night at the Izod Center (aka the Meadowlands) in East Rutherford, NJ. Korn and Slipknot make awesome tour mates, they compliment each other really well.

I missed King 810’s set, but was more than ready for Korn to hit the stage marking my 8th show.

Their stage was really simple. No backdrop, a light up floor, two screens (the boxes with the blue circles on them in the picture), a long light set across the top and four custom hanging cluster light rigs that were spread out on the right and left and directly behind the band.

A near sold out venue lit up right when Korn hit the stage. With the lights out an odd remix of Twist started to play. Ray came out first with some lights highlighting him taking position at center stage behind his new white kit. As each member came on the crowd got louder until we saw JD come on stage, he hopped into the light and they started Twist off right. Strobes and floor pulsating in time. With that quick classic done the lights went out and Munky starts the riff for Here to Stay. “Here we go!” lights flash orange and yellow and the beat just drops off a cliff with everyone hanging on for dear life. That got the place jumping .

Amazing sound, it just blew me away. Super clear, great separation, JD perfectly in the mix. They are playing so well right now. Lots of energy, JD sounds as strong as ever and he controlled the crowd from beginning to end. They played almost all singles in a short, 50 minute set. Really disappointing amount of time, but they made the most of it. Song of the night for me was Good God, which is one of my favorites in their entire catalog and one of the heavier songs they played. So good live, JD was right on the money, the final freakout was just unreal. That amazing run out of the chorus into the delicious chunky bass riff and crisp cymbal work break down. The build up that only Korn can do just before all hell breaks loose. JD practically cracked the Earth with his howl, I swear he hit it just like the album. That was played right after Falling Away From which got a huge response. 15 years from release and it’s just as powerful. Freak on a Leash was another one that just knocked everyone silly.

With such a short set, I wished Hater was replaced by anything off of the new album. Played well, but they have much better songs than that. Oildale would have been amazing. This really should have been a co-headlining tour. Full sets for Korn and Slipknot would have made it perfect. Everyone was having a great time and just when you think you’re in the middle, it was the end of the show! Anything less than 60 minutes is a crime. Despite my complaining it was one of the best performances I’ve seen them give. They’re going to be playing the entire self-titled album soon, which has been done maybe twice in 20 years. Judging by this show, that is going to be absolutely intense. I hope they do it outside of a few festivals, I really want to experience it.

Korn worked everyone up with a upbeat, party like setlist. They let Slipknot do the heavy lifting with their 100 minutes of metal. Slipknot took the reins and whipped the place into a friggin’ frenzy. They know how to put on a show (this was my second). A sick looking stage with awesome lighting and some wild pyro (which was pretty reserved. It was used wisely). It reminded me of the club in the movie From Dusk Til Dawn.

I thought the sound was rather muddy, it seemed like it was being tweaked through out the show. It was easy for Corey’s vocals to get lost in the mix, but he was really powerful last night. He knows how to work a crowd, he name dropped New Jersey a lot which won him a lot of points and they picked a killer setlist. Just one crusher after the next. Psychosocial sent the place into a frenzy. 5 new songs and they were all played really well. Custer being the new monster song, which I called when the album came out. Duality, Left Behind, Wait and Bleed, Eyeless, Spit It Out (has to be experienced in person to understand. We got high praise that we hit a drop off chorus perfect, something a crowd had yet to achieve this tour. Bonus points for Shawn going into the crowd with balloons too). The encore was brilliant too. [sic] into People = Shit and then Surfacing to shut it down. The crowd ate up every second of it. The pit was way more active for Slipknot than Korn, it spread out probably 3 times the size at some points. The spinning  hydraulic keg platforms for Chris and Shawn continued to be a crowd pleaser. Sid must be feeling much better from his surgery in October as he was running all over the place, jumping off the back platform onto his tables and hanging off of just about everything he could reach.

Near the end of the show Corey said that this was one of the best tours the band has ever done. They came out of a dark and uncertain period with a great new album, picked the right supporting bands for their first US arena tour in a few years and their fans turned out in droves to support them.

The tour picks back up in January in Europe for another long leg starting in Dublin. It’s a great time to see these guys, I hope they come back and do it again. It’s a day later and I feel like I’m in withdrawal. Go see it!

Slipknot and Korn at Mohegan Sun – Prepare for Hell Tour

prepare for hell tour slipknot songs

I highly suggest giving  Slipknot  a look next time they come around and picking up their new album, which is a hybrid of their first three studio albums. It also debuted at number 1 on Billboard, and got them yet another Grammy nomination, so if those aren’t enough good reasons to buy it, then I don’t know what would be. Great band, great new album, and hopefully, more great shows to come.

Be Prepared For Hell by Slipknot

Songfacts®:

  • This short track was penned by Shawn "Clown" Crahan. The percussionist also sings the tune. Frontman Corey Taylor told Kerrang! during a track-by-track interview: "What I get from it is the expectations that come in your mind when you're dealt such a heavy blow, like losing Paul. The lyrics go: Be prepared for Hell, and I say oh well Just tell me when I can open my eyes and realise I've died "So you may look like you're together, but you're not. On the inside, you're really starting to deteriorate, so it's the perfect setup for what is the next song ."
