Whether you're an advanced skier or just starting out, there's a Michigan ski resort for you.

There are so many top-notch places to hit the slopes in Michigan that you can take your pick. The state ranks second in the nation by number of ski areas, which might explain why Olympic gold medalist snowboarder Nick Baumgartner and Olympic skier Winter Vinecki hail from Michigan. In the winter, skiers and snowboarders at any age or level can find ski runs, terrain parks, lessons and slopes spread across the state − many of which include overnight accommodations in cozy lodges. If you're visiting in any other seasons, most ski resorts transform into an equally thrilling place to bike, hike or golf.

The history of commercialized winter sports in Michigan stretches back to when its first ski resort opened 93 years ago. Today the state is still trying to push boundaries, with a record-setting bridge between peaks and a ski resort designated for advanced skiers only. Become part of the state's skiing and snowboarding legacy when you visit any of these top Michigan ski resorts.

(Note: Some of the following activities, attractions and locations may be affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. New policies may be in place, including capacity restrictions, reservation requirements or mask mandates. Check with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the U.S. Department of State and local tourism boards before traveling.)

In Michigan's Upper Peninsula region sits Ski Brule, a family-friendly mountain resort offering skiing and snowboarding for all ages and abilities. Three parks designed for snowboarding offer diverse terrain ranging from smaller boxes and wider rails to pitches of various sizes through advanced wooded areas. The resort offers 17 ski trails, 11 lifts and 150 acres of navigable terrain; the property sees 150 inches of snow each year, with snowmaking capabilities as well. Ski Brule typically opens for the season in late November and remains open as long as there are good snow conditions (typically until mid-April).

Brule Village offers 15 different on-site chalets with up to six bedrooms; some feature saunas, private hot tubs, and wood or gas fireplaces. The resort's Homestead Snow Tubing Park is an option for a fun and easy afternoon of gently sliding down the slopes. Brule is open in the summer months, with options to kayak, fish, golf and more.

Mount Bohemia

Mount Bohemia is a Michigan ski resort reserved for advanced skiers only, with steep slopes, exposed rock formations and off-piste (ungroomed) terrain. There are 585 skiable acres, featuring two chairlifts and a 900-foot vertical drop. The Keeweenaw Peninsula region receives an average of 273 inches of snow each year due to the area's lake effect. The specialty here is cat skiing, which incorporates a snowcat machine (not a feline friend). This special vehicle transports a group of skiers to a remote area; in this case, it's a 20-minute ride to the top of Voodoo Mountain. Skiers at the resort have mentioned they were impressed to find serious, double black diamond skiing in the Midwest.

If you don't fit the description of an experienced skier, the snowshoe and cross-country ski trails or the Nordic spa − with hot and cold thermal pools − might be a more suitable option for spending your day here. In the warmer months, yoga and wellness retreats are held at Mount Bohemia. On the shore of Lac La Belle, meaning "beautiful lake," is where you'll find the resort in Michigan's Upper Peninsula.

Pine Mountain Ski and Golf Resort

Pine Mountain is a Trademark Collection by Wyndham property in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan that offers Timber Stone, an 18-hole championship golf course, and a historic ski area featuring the tallest human-made ski jump in North America. There's a 500-step climb to the base of the Pine Mountain Ski Jump. Pine Mountain was first opened to the public in 1939 by Fred Pabst of the Pabst Brewing family. Today, visitors applaud the professionalism of the staff and the all-inclusive nature of a stay, saying it makes for a carefree family vacation .

Unique among ski resorts is Pine Mountain's Moving Mountains Adaptive Program, which provides certified ski instruction to people with disabilities. Snowmobiling is another favorite winter pastime at Pine Mountain, with around 120 miles of trails in the area around Iron Mountain, on the border of Wisconsin . The summer months at the resort stay just as busy, with rafting adventures, guided fishing trips, climbing opportunities, paintball and more.

Crystal Mountain is a polished, family-owned resort that boasts 58 downhill trails for skiing, 39 championship holes for golfing, spa and wellness facilities, and more, about 30 miles southwest of Traverse City . On the grounds is the Michigan Legacy Art Park, which is a densely forested 30-acre preserve with more than 50 sculptures spread out along nearly 2 miles of trails. Crystal Mountain is great for the uninitiated skier or snowboarder, or for someone looking to improve their snow skills; the property offers a wide variety of lessons − from teaching 3-year-olds to clubs for retirees.

If you're staying on the property, you'll find the Mountain Market to be a handy place for snacks and discovering local beer and wine from northern Michigan. Guests can even have the market fill the fridge of your room with all your favorite goodies before you arrive. The annual Beer and Brat Festival invites local breweries to the resort in May, which some returning visitors enjoy as a kickoff to summer. Crystal Mountain is situated near Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore , an ideal daytrip to see the 460-foot-high dunes along 35 miles of Lake Michigan shoreline.

Big Snow Resort

Ski and board down both Indianhead and Blackjack mountains with one ticket at Big Snow Resort in northwestern Michigan. Both mountains see more than 200 inches of snow annually; Indianhead has a 638-foot vertical drop, and collectively the resort covers 400 skiable acres. Lifts include a magic carpet – a conveyor belt-style transporter for smaller slopes. Lessons with a terrain-based approach are available for beginners. Night skiing, a thrilling take on hitting the slopes, is available for a select period around New Year's. For those not heading out to ski, Big Snow offers big fun in the form of swimming at the indoor pool, snowshoeing, yoga, snowmobiling or hiking to waterfalls in the area. Guest rooms, private condos and chalets are available to rent, accommodating up to 14 guests. Recent reviews of the lodging are mixed, with some complimenting the retro vibe and others saying the resort is in need of an update.

Shanty Creek Resort

Two snowboarders at the top of a slope at Shanty Creek Resort.

Set across 5,500 acres, Shanty Creek Resort encompasses four distinct villages open year-round for enjoyment in northern Michigan's Chain O'Lakes region. Head to Summit Village, Cedar River Village, Hawk's Eye Village or Schuss Mountain for winter snow sports, summer golf or scenic chairlift rides taking in autumn's colors . The skiing here is serious. If you're competitive, Schuss Mountain hosts a variety of annual ski race events; Shanty Creek also hosts the White Pine Stampede, Michigan's oldest and longest Nordic cross-country skiing race. For big air, head to Schuss Mountain's Monster Park. Past guests say that the slopes are well maintained regardless of the weather and that lift operators and staff are friendly.

However, there is more to do on the snow at Shanty Creek than ski or snowboard − like ride a wide-tired bike on trails of packed snow, hop on a snowmobile or take part in an all-ages opportunity to dog-sled. The dog-sledding rides last about 30 minutes and include a meet-and-greet with the pups. If you're a dog owner, you can bring your own pooch to stay at Shanty Creek for an additional fee with a variety of pet-friendly rooms. For those looking for some time out of the cold, a private Topgolf Swing Suite is available to rent. Bellaire – where Shanty Creek Resort is located – is a small town with plenty for visitors to explore, including a brewery, winery, distillery and meadery among the picturesque Midwest scenery. If you visit during the summer, be sure to check out the Caribbean-clear waters of Torch Lake.

Address: 5780 Shanty Creek Road, Bellaire, MI 49615

Marquette Mountain Resort

Marquette Mountain is a four-season day resort in Marquette, Michigan, with views of Lake Superior. Unusual for a ski resort is its focus on art, demonstrated through installations like the "Guardians of the Hill:" giant sculptures positioned at the base of the mountain, made from old railroad parts and collectively weighing in at 5 tons. Not unusual for Michigan is the quality of its ski resorts; Marquette is no different, offering 25 ski trails across about 170 acres of slopes. Four lifts bring snow lovers to elevations of 1,275 feet at the peak, with 500-foot vertical drops.

In the summer, visitors to Marquette can take advantage of a downhill bike park with trails for all levels of mountain biking ability. The thaw of winter also brings opportunities to hike or kayak. The T-Bar is where everyone comes together to raise a toast or relax with a meal. There are a number of hotels and motels near Marquette Mountain, but you cannot stay overnight at the resort.

Boyne Mountain Resort

Boyne Mountain is a resort with an exciting project: The property is in the process of building the world's longest timber-towered suspension bridge, dubbed SkyBridge Michigan. Scheduled to open in the fall of 2022, the bridge will cross from the peaks of McLouth Mountain to Disciples Ridge, offering visitors (who will arrive via chairlift) the opportunity to cross the 1,203-foot pedestrian bridge while nearly 120 feet in the air. Currently, the Adventure Center is the place to embark on a daily adventure, whether that's skiing, ice skating, tubing or year-round zip lining.

The Boyne skier will enjoy an average of 140 inches of snowfall here each year with 415 acres across 60 trails, 12 lifts and vertical elevations of 500 feet. The breakdown of the slope difficulty levels is relatively even for beginner, intermediate and advanced skiers. Families can try out Sno-Go, a ski-bike that blends the stability of a bike frame with your skis as the "wheels." Open on weekends is the Avalanche Bay Indoor Waterpark, home to seven slides and four pools. Some overnight guests felt the shops were a bit overpriced and the rooms could use some updates, but visitors say overall Boyne is a great resort with a little something for everyone.

Address: 1 Boyne Mountain Road, Boyne Falls, MI 49713

Treetops Resort

Treetops Resort in north-central Michigan prides itself on its golf chops, with 81 holes and an award-winning collection of top-rated courses. But when the temperature drops, its ski resort comes alive, offering plenty of powder for tubing, dog-sledding, sleigh rides and, of course, skiing. Treetops is the place to bring your little ones if you want to encourage them to strap into some tiny skis − children 6 and younger stay and ski for free with each paying adult. The Skiable Feast is a Treetops signature event that pairs cross-country skiing with food and beverage stations for a wintry dine-around. Trek at your own pace for nearly 4 miles, stopping along the way to enjoy stroganoff or sliders. Packages include tickets to the Skiable Feast in conjunction with an overnight stay at the resort.

Guests can choose to stay in condos, cottages, the inn or the main Treetops Lodge, which features an indoor-outdoor pool. A full-service spa at Treetops offers everything from body massages and blowouts to lash extensions. Recent reviews nod to thoughtful touches, like a bottle of Champagne in the room for a celebrating couple, but note that some areas of the resort are still outdated and under renovation. Past guests recommend booking dog-sledding early as it does sell out.

The Highlands at Harbor Springs

Reminiscent of summer resorts in the Catskills , The Highlands at Harbor Springs in northern Michigan has a ski-in, ski-out main lodge designed like English country estates among other bed-and-breakfast accommodation options at the resort. Enjoy seasonal dinner theater and four golf courses, which complement more than 50 groomed downhill runs for skiing in season, including the state's longest ski run − the North Peak Pass − at 1.25 miles. The resort sees an average of 140 inches of natural snowfall each year, with 435 acres of skiable terrain and a 552-foot vertical drop. The Highlands also offers five terrain parks for snowboarding. A mountain biking park is open seasonally until early October with more than 20 miles of natural terrain, accessible with a lift ticket. Families can also enjoy an adventure camp for kids, horseback riding, hiking, a zip line and outdoor movies at dusk. Recent reviewers of The Highlands at Harbor Springs rave that it's a tremendous all-inclusive property for families or friend groups with stellar views and above-and-beyond service.

Nub's Nob Ski Resort

Less than 2 miles away from The Highlands sits Nub's Nob, also in Harbor Springs. This approximately 65-year-old family-owned ski hill and resort is the perfect destination for the skiing − or snowboarding − purist: Nub's focuses on the art of skiing, eschewing the other wintertime and offseason activities offered by its fellow Michigan ski resorts. Nub's typically sees more than 120 inches of snowfall annually but also has snow-making capabilities to blanket its 248 acres of skiable terrain and 53 ski runs. The resort offers eight chairlifts to three peaks: Front Side, South Side and Pintail Peak. A vertical drop of 427 feet will keep the experts busy – and nine ski runs are dedicated to only the most advanced skiers.

Nub's Nob is also a great place for beginners. With the right ski or snowboarding attire and equipment, anyone can access the 275,000-square-foot beginners area free of charge with no lift ticket or pass required. Lift tickets are also free for children 8 or younger with a skiing adult and seniors older than 70. Kids ages 5 to 15 can try out the Ski Academy program for weekly lessons. There are no overnight accommodations on the Nub's Nob property, but two ski lodges provide restrooms, dining and fireplaces to cozy up to during the day. You'll find plenty of rooms available at properties within 15 miles of the resort.

Address: 500 Nub's Nob Road, Harbor Springs, MI 49740

Hanson Hills Recreation Area

Home of the Michigan Cup Marathon, Hanson Hills is a 1,000-acre family sports park in Grayling, just off Interstate 75. It offers a terrain park for snowboarding plus 11 downhill ski runs, snow tubing and about 20 miles of groomed cross-country skiing trails. In the summer months, visitors to Hanson Hills Recreation Area can take part in biking, hiking, disc golf or softball. Hanson Hills considers itself a hidden gem – even though it was the first downhill skiing area in the state of Michigan and only the second in the Midwest, circa 1929.

Winter programs for youth include a variety of academies, skill schools and race teams for skiing, snowboarding and even archery. Events – such as Easter egg hunts – take place here throughout the year, so check the online calendar before your visit. Most reviewers said the customer service was excellent and accommodating of those with disabilities. However, some visitors to Hanson Hills found timeslots to be oversold and encourage extra caution when booking ski or snowboard runs. A Ramada by Wyndham hotel is situated 4 miles from Hanson Hills, and Paddle Hard Brewing is a highly rated brewpub nearby.

Caberfae Peaks Ski & Golf

Warm-weather visitors can take advantage of the nine-hole golf course. Overnight guests will stay at the slopeside 39-room Mackenzie Lodge, with apres-ski amenities like a heated outdoor pool, a hot tub and a fire pit. Lodgers receive a discount on lift tickets and have ski-in, ski-out access at the foot of the slopes − and next to the golf course.

Bittersweet Ski and Snowboard Resort

Bittersweet is a seasonal resort in the Kalamazoo River Valley, with an emphasis on snowboarding and skiing. Otsego, Michigan, is about 40 miles due south of Grand Rapids , making this resort a great daytrip from the city. Among 350 vertical feet are 20 runs and seven lifts, along with two "wonder carpets" and two rope tows. Lift ticket sales are final, with no advance reservations or lift ticket capacity. Resortgoers will find a restaurant, bar and full-service ski shop in the indoor lodge, while an outdoor grill serves up burgers and brats to hungry skiers and boarders.

Recent visitors to Bittersweet rave that it's a good resort for first-timers, with patient instructors; many wooded trails are a bonus for those more comfortable on skis. There is no lodging at the property, but a number of accommodations sit within a half-hour, including a Four Points by Sheraton in Kalamazoo or the Castle in the Country Bed & Breakfast Inn situated less than 10 miles away.

Address: 600 River Road, Otsego, MI 49078

Pine Knob Ski & Snowboard Resort

The day resort, which is only open in the ski season, operates several chairlifts, rope tows and wonder carpet conveyors. Ski runs at Pine Knob range from beginner-friendly greens to the Wall, a double black diamond run for experts only. Three terrain parks cater to snowboarders. You'll find food, drinks, rentals and gear for purchase in the main lodge.

Season passes are available beginning in September; patrons can also opt to purchase daily lift tickets. Reviews mention that Pine Knob is well located and equipped with sufficient facilities, but some guests felt the snacks in the food court were overpriced. If you're a skiing enthusiast and a music lover, you'll be glad to know that the Pine Knob Music Theatre next door has hosted big-name acts like Stevie Nicks and Josh Groban.

15 Top-Rated Ski Resorts in Michigan, 2023/24

Written by Karen Asp and Brad Lane Updated Nov 7, 2023

Visit Michigan during winter, and it's apparent the state takes skiing seriously. Except for New York, Michigan boasts more ski areas than any other state. Currently, the Wolverine State has approximately 40 ski resorts, over 250 lifts, 50 terrain parks, and nearly 1,000 runs.

Michigan is also home to the country's only hill for ski flying , which is like ski jumping but on a larger scale.

While those statistics are impressive, two other factors set Michigan apart from other states in terms of skiing: convenience and cost. Surprisingly, no matter where you go in the state, you're always within two hours of a ski resort. Skiing in Michigan is also much more affordable than buying lift tickets at ski resorts in Colorado or Utah ski resorts .

Find the best spots in the state to hit the slopes with our list of the top ski resorts in Michigan.

Snowriver Mountain Resort

New ownership has transformed what used to be Big Snow Resort in Wakefield into Snowriver Mountain Resort. The property still encompasses two mountains (Indianhead Mountain and Blackjack Mountain) that receive more than 17 feet of snow each winter. The new upgrades catapult this familiar terrain into a premier downhill destination.

The terrain at Snowriver is now split between Jackson Creek Summit and Black River Basin . While they're both geared to handle all levels of skiers, beginner and intermediate skiers will have slightly more terrain to choose from at Black River Basin, including a cushy beginner's area with a new ski carpet.

If it's size you're looking for, Jackson Creek Summit weighs in as the favorite, featuring 230 skiable acres versus 170 acres. Jackson Creek Summit also has a small collection of true double-black diamond runs for experienced downhill athletes only.

The mountains have eleven lifts accessing all of its terrain. Visitors to Snowriver Mountain Resort have access to both mountains, with a free shuttle transporting skiers back and forth throughout the day.

Some of the new upgrades to the ski area under new management include renovations to the old Indianhead Lodge & Suites, now The Lodge at Jackson Creek. New and improved retail options are also available at the Sugar Mountain Chalet, formerly the Summit Center. Perhaps the biggest upgrade at the resort, however, is the installation of the Upper Peninsula's first six-person high-speed lift, the Voyageur Express.

Boyne Mountain

Michigan's best-known resort is Boyne, which actually consists of two mountains, Boyne Mountain and Boyne Highlands . These are the two largest resorts in lower Michigan, and each boasts over 400 acres, with more than 115 trails in total. Boyne Highlands also has a 1.25-mile trail, which is the longest ski run in Michigan . All these amenities make the mountains feel more like those in the West.

At Boyne Mountain Resort, you'll find America's first high-speed, six-place chairlift, and Boyne Highlands has Michigan's first four-place chairlift. In addition, the two mountains feature 11 terrain parks and the SnowSports Academy, which always earns accolades from guests. Both mountains also offer free beginner ski and snowboard areas.

For those not into the downhill scene, each mountain boasts an impressive 35-plus kilometers of cross-country and snowshoe trails. Each mountain is also well regarded for its overnight accommodations, including lodge rooms, cottages, and ski-in chalets.

Boyne Highland and Boyne Mountain Resort are part of the Ikon Pass . Day passes and regular season passes are also available, as well as several other "stay-and-ski" packages.

Crystal Mountain ski resort on a cold winter night

Crystal has scored a place on lists of the 10 best family ski resorts in the United States and Canada, putting it in the company of heavy hitters like Deer Valley in Utah and Steamboat Springs in Colorado. Credit goes not only to the 102 acres of skiable terrain but also to the amenities at the resort.

Some of the special features at Crystal Mountain include luxury cottages at the base of the slope, complimentary activities like family campfires, and an indoor pool with a family play area. The mountain also hosts a full array of additional snow activities like fat-tire snowcat biking, snowshoeing, and snowmobiling.

Crystal is also home to an 18,500-square-foot LEED-certified spa. The Crystal Spa offers specialty treatments designed specifically to treat winter aches and soreness. On the slopes, nine lifts give access to 58 trails, including 27 lit for night skiing. The resort also has three terrain areas and six glade areas.

This might sound like more of a dessert than a ski resort, but if you ski here once, you'll see why this is the ultimate sweet treat. Ski Brule consistently ranks as one of the Midwest's best resorts. It also promises to be the first to open, sometimes as early as October and stays open for roughly six months.

Much of the credit goes to its location near the Wisconsin and Michigan border, as well as its immense snowmaking capabilities. Within 24 hours, it can generate enough snow to open any one of its 17 trails. It also features three terrain parks and a tubing park. The resort also stays open late for night skiing.

Additional winter activities at Ski Brule include fat biking, cross-country skiing, and sleigh rides. And the unique Acrobag at the resort allows guests to launch off a five-foot jump into an inflatable landing pad (free with the purchase of a lift ticket).

Programs that cater to kids at Ski Brule include on-site daycare, specialized lessons, and free skiing for kids under nine years old every Sunday.

Getting vertical is one of the biggest draws to Mount Bohemia in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Here, you'll find the longest vertical in the Midwest at 900 feet. Mount Bohemia is also blessed with an abundance of lake-effect snow, receiving 273 inches on average every year.

Because its trails are ungroomed and the runs are either expert or advanced, Mount Bohemia is solely for serious skiers who will no doubt love the mountain's extreme backcountry area. The forested runs feature chutes and cliff drops. Mount Bohemia now also oversees the development of the nearby Voodoo Mountain , which offers more intermediate runs and snowcat skiing.

The resort also recently opened the Midwest's first ski resort hostel. The Log Cabin Hostel at Mount Bohemia features 24 coed bunks in two different rooms, a sauna, and an outdoor hot tub, all of which are slope-side. You can also bunk in a yurt — sleeping 10 people each — or one of 12 log cabins with capacity for up to seven people each.

Nub's Nob

For those looking to get their ski legs on for the first time before heading West, Nub's Nob is the place to go. That's because 30 percent of the trails are marked as easiest, and another 50 percent more intermediate. That leaves only a small amount assigned to the most difficult, but with only a 427-foot vertical drop, even intermediate skiers should be able to tackle these trails.

For absolute beginners, there's a free beginner area with a chairlift, so if you have any questions about whether you'll like the sport, you can always try it before buying a ticket. Those eight years and younger and 70-plus ski for free. And once you're on the slope, Pintail Peak is fun for skiing on gently winding trails.

Nub's Nob Ski Area expanded its snowmaking efforts in recent years, as well as added to its fleet of corduroy-making snowcats. Another recent addition to the resort includes a two-kilometer snowshoe trail that allows uphill skiers to access the Arena Glades without taking a lift.

Tucked away in the Upper Peninsula, family-friendly Pine Mountain likes to say it has the best-groomed slopes in the Midwest. It features over 30 trails and a terrain park, plus night skiing. What sets Pine Mountain apart, though, is its ski jump, often revered as one of the best in the world.

Every February, the Kiwanis Ski Club hosts Jump Weekend , where top jumpers in the world have set numerous records throughout the years. In fact, the US record of 459 feet, which still holds, was set at Pine Mountain. More than 20,000 spectators attend Jump Weekend.

A 2018 change of ownership at Pine Mountain brought about the beginning of a multi-million-dollar upgrade to the resort. Overnight guests at the Lodge at Pine Mountain this year can enjoy the renovated rooms, which feature alpine décor and easy skiing access. The resort also offers newly renovated trailside condos at the Cedar Haus .

For the 2022/2023 season, daily lift tickets are between $67 (weekday) and $89 (weekend) for adults. The resort also offers discounted lift tickets for night skiing, which occurs between 5pm and 9pm Wednesday through Saturday. "Ski-and-Stay" packages are also available for an affordable weekend getaway.

Lift tickets are valid for both Schuss Mountain and Summit Mountain. Shanty Creek Resort has also recently upgraded its rental gear to include the latest equipment from Rossignol – a leader in ski technology.

8 Best Ski Resorts in Michigan, According to Local Experts

Yes, you can ski in the Midwest, and this Great Lakes state is the perfect place to start.

Courtesy of Shanty Creek

Michigan is well-known for its waters, boasting an astounding 3,000+ miles of coastline. But a lesser-celebrated perk of the Wolverine State? Skiing. More specifically, downhill or alpine-style skiing. “No matter where you are in Michigan, you’re within a 2.5-hour drive of a ski area,” explains Mickey MacWilliams of the Michigan Snowsports Industries Association . Furthermore, according to MSIA numbers, winter travel accounts for almost a third of the $22.8 billion Michigan travel industry. The state boasts a typical ski season of 100-104 days, has over 40 ski resorts, and garners between 2-2.4 million skier visits each year. A flurry of night skiing options means visitors may have the chance to see the northern lights, too. Here are eight of the best ski resorts in Michigan, perfect for a wintertime ski trip.

Meet the Expert

Stacey Brugeman is a Michigan-based food and travel writer who has skied these Midwestern slopes since she was a kid.

Boyne Mountain Resort, Boyne Falls

Courtesy of Pure Michigan

Stacey Brugeman is a Michigan-based food and travel writer who has a long history with winter sports. She learned to ski when she was 18 months old, is a former collegiate alpine racer, and even named one of her children after Aspen’s Ajax Mountain. “When we left after 12 years in Colorado to return to Michigan, our home state, we were acutely aware that we were giving up the mountains for the water,” the ski expert noted. “Northern Michigan is (rightly) celebrated for its summer season. But winters here have been the most unexpected surprise. Every Friday after school, we grab the kids and head over to a family cabin in Petoskey, skiing Boyne all weekend long. There's plenty of vertical to get some good turns in, even for a washed-up ski racer, and it makes our cold winters fly by to be outside,” she shared. Boyne Mountain Resort boasts 60 runs on over 400 acres of skiable terrain and is home to the world’s longest timber-towered suspension bridge, SkyBridge Michigan ; take a chairlift ride up to the bridge to enjoy stunning views over the Boyne Valley after a day on the slopes.

Brugeman added, “I learned to ski at Boyne Mountain as a child, on the super-steep eastern face. While Boyne Mountain is the OG, they have made impressive updates to this property in recent years, including the sky bridge, a handful of modern chairlift upgrades, and some great dining and lodging options. I never ski ‘the Mountain,’ as we call it, without stopping into Eagle's Nest. Their 360-degree fireplace is the best place to warm up.”

Snow River Mountain Resort, Wakefield

Courtesy of Snow River Mountain Resort

Snow River Mountain Resort is the largest ski resort in the Upper Peninsula (UP) — and I grew up skiing here. It stands apart due to lake-effect snow from nearby Lake Superior that results in more than 150 inches of powder each year. The resort is spread over two mountains, with a 538-foot vertical drop, 56 trails, and 400 acres of space. There are 11 chair lifts, three terrain parks, five mogul runs, and top elevation is 1,750 feet. Snow River is split into two distinct areas: Jackson Creek Summit (the former Indianhead Mountain Resort) and Black River Basin (the former Blackjack Mountain Resort).

Additionally, for Midwest ski enthusiasts, Snow River Mountain is part of the Legendary Ski Pass , allowing access to Lutsen Mountains in Minnesota and Granite Peak in Wisconsin.  Notably, it’s also about 12 miles east of Ironwood, home to the iconic Stormy Kromer clothing brand and its signature wool winter cap with ear flaps. Stock up on your visit for the ultimate Northland accessory.

Crystal Mountain Resort, Thompsonville

Courtesy of Crystal Mountain

Brugeman also recommends Crystal Mountain Resort. “ Crystal is right down the road from us, and all the kids from our school get to ski there multiple times a week. It’s a super hill, and so family friendly. For parents, I love hitting the canvas tents at nearby Iron Fish Distillery for après,” she explained. With 59 runs, 100+ acres of skiable area, eight lifts, and a ski learning center, there’s much to enjoy at this pretty spot. Crystal Mountain also boasts three terrain areas for snowboarders, a vertical drop of 375 feet, and 27 lighted slopes for night skiing.

Mount Bohemia, Lac La Belle

Mount Bohemia is a unique Michigan ski resort as it’s designed only for expert-level skiers. In fact, they actively share that it’s not a suitable mountain for beginners to tackle. Think steep slopes and a 900-foot vertical drop on 538 skiable acres. With a whopping amount of snow per year due to lake effect — almost 300 inches annually — this Keweenaw Peninsula resort offers off-piste (ungroomed terrain) skiing. Advanced skiers will especially appreciate the Voodoo Mountain option, so called “ cat-skiing ” where 20 or fewer skiers and boarders ride a speciality snow cat vehicle up the mountain, then ski down the pristine, untouched slopes. This spot also stands out for its on-site Nordic Spa , complete with thermal pools.

Shanty Creek Resort, Bellaire

This Northern Michigan resort sits east of the famed Caribbean-blue waters of Torch Lake, one of the bluest lakes in the world . Shanty Creek Resort has 53 trails spread through three distinct villages; they are Summit, Schuss, and Cedar River, with the more advanced skiing focused around Schuss Mountain. “I would also consider Shanty Creek [one of the best] — their nordic trail system is as impressive as their alpine offering,” added Brugeman. Shanty Creek has over 15 miles of cross-country ski trails, alpine tubing, and multiple terrain parks.

Nub’s Nob, Harbor Springs

Nub’s Nob , located near the so-called “tip of the Mitt” in the Lower Peninsula is another great spot for skiing in Michigan. “Locals love Nub’s Nob… I haven't skied Nub’s since I was a kid, but year-rounders over in Petoskey swear by it,” said Brugeman. The resort has been open since 1958 and is still family owned and operated. It features two lodges, 53 ski runs, 248 acres of skiable territory, three peaks, 427 feet of vertical drop, and eight chairlifts. With 123 inches of average annual snowfall, a free beginner area , and free lift tickets for children under eight, Nub’s Nob is a great family-friendly option for a Midwestern ski getaway.

Ski Brule, Iron River

Another Upper Peninsula pick, the more approachable Ski Brule is pass partners with the expert-only Mount Bohemia. With a five-and-a-half month ski season, 17 trails, 11 chairlifts, three terrain parks, and 150 inches of annual snowfall, it’s easy to see why this resort is a longtime favorite in the Wolverine State. Ski Brule sits on 3,000 acres in the UP wilderness, with roughly 150 acres groomed for ski and snowboard use.

The Highlands at Harbor Springs, Harbor Springs

The Highlands at Harbor Springs (formerly known as Boyne Highlands) is a favorite among Michiganders. Beyond being the largest ski resort in Michigan, this spot boasts the highest vertical drop in the Lower Peninsula. Brugeman expanded, “Last season, I skied the best Michigan powder day of my entire life at Boyne Highlands.” The travel writer and veteran skier continued, “The morning after a massive storm, we were tucking in and out of the trees in white stuff that was up to my knees. You know that saying where there's no such thing as friends on a powder day? Lucky for my kids, I'm family. We stuck together and had a blast.” The Highlands at Harbor Springs gets 140 inches of annual snowfall on its 55 runs. Plus, the resort is conveniently located in the Petoskey area, recognized by T+L as one of the best small towns in Michigan .

Michigan Snow Report

Snow in michigan, plan your trip.

Clearing hurdles: Swiss Valley insider takes on state's skiing. Marquette Greenway grows.

ski trips michigan

Mike Panich has been a “ski area junkie” since he was a kid, fascinated by the inner workings that keep the chairlifts turning and a velvety blanket of snow on the downhill slopes. His career shows it.

In January, when winter finally woke up and ushered in a week of deep freezes, he and fellow management at Swiss Valley Ski & Snowboard Area in Jones decided to “lay the hammer down pretty hard” when they made snow.

They knew winter would regress, that funky thaws would come. They always do. And if Swiss couldn't preserve white slopes, the skiers and their dollars — fuel for next season’s upgrades to the resort — just wouldn’t come.

The season at Swiss was eclipsed by too much warmth, at least in the number of days, but the slopes proved as resilient as it gets in southwest Michigan. The initial thick blanket mostly held its own, to skiers’ and snowboarders’ surprise, as crews refreshed with snowmaking at every chance and used their experience at grooming stockpiles and leftovers of what they did have, be it fresh, icy or mushy.

“Mother Nature was fighting us at every step of the way,” he says.

After four seasons as assistant general manager at Swiss — from snow making to marketing — Panich is leaving. But his experience with survival for a small, family-owned resort will play well into his new gig: as executive director of the Michigan Snowsports Industries Association .

On April 1, he begins his new role in a trade group that helps to rally skiers and snowboarders to play at the roughly 40 downhill resorts across the state, plus some cross-country ski areas, and that gets resort managers to talk, share ideas and survive the challenges of winter business.

Challenges like the climate. He’s taking over from Mickey MacWilliams, who’s held the role as its sole employee since a group of resorts and ski shops started MSIA 31 years ago.

This winter, she says from her home office in Clarkston, halfway between Detroit and Flint, proved how much harder and smarter resorts will have to work to overcome the weather. MSIA advocated for and gained access to no-interest federal Small Business Association loans for some resorts as disaster relief this winter. Meant as a way to recoup losses, the loans are available to resorts in most of the Upper Peninsula and the northern half of the Lower Peninsula because of a drought declaration in those areas.

Swiss Valley’s snowmaking muscle this winter wouldn’t have been possible without its recent investments in new snow guns along with new, wider water pipes to replace the old, leaky infrastructure.

MacWilliams says that kind of investment will be key in the years ahead. But, after such a freakishly balmy February, she asks, “If you want a ski industry in Michigan, what does that look like?”

MacWilliams will stay on staff for a full year as MSIA president as Panich grabs the organization’s tow ropes. Then she’ll retire, saying, “It’s time for someone to come along with new ideas.”

Panich has ideas (no surprise), though he says it’s too early to talk publicly about them. He’s helped to market ski resorts and ski-related businesses ever since he started his freelance design and marketing business 25 years ago. He’s helped to promote Swiss for 20 years and spent several years marketing and consulting for the family-owned Caberfae Peaks in Cadillac.

Skiing and snowboarding is “a very friendly industry,” he says, that does well at sharing ideas. It’s about relationships, he says, and helping collectively so “everybody benefits.” There have been times when Swiss has quietly turned to other resorts for parts and advice on snow-making gear. That spirit will be key to outsmarting and outworking an unpredictable future for Michigan winters.

Panich, who will work from his home in Cassopolis, says Michigan has to continue to grow the sport. Teach folks at small resorts like Swiss, so they’ll want to travel north to bigger resorts and spend money.

If resorts gain our dollars, they can reinvest. And, if they can preserve the snow, hopefully, they’ll keep us skiing longer.

New Buffalo trail to Chicago

More hurdles are being cleared so that work can begin soon on more portions of the Marquette Greenway, the partially built 60-mile trail that, when finished, will connect New Buffalo to Chicago.

On April 3, advocates with the Friends of Berrien County Trails and civic leaders will celebrate the groundbreaking for the future trailhead at North Smith Street and West Mechanic Street in New Buffalo.

That will launch construction this year of about three miles of paths that include sidewalks along Mechanic Street and a 10-foot-wide paved path along U.S. 12 from Willard Street to the Grand Beach/U.S. 12 intersection. The second phase, to be built in 2025, would then extend it almost one mile to the Indiana border.

The bigger picture: Berrien County sets priorities for bike, boat and horse trails

The friends group says financial support for the Michigan portion of the trail has come from private, state and federal sources.

As that grows, Gary Wood, the friends group president, points out that construction this year will fill in significant portions of a separate trail that’s growing north of New Buffalo along the Red Arrow Highway to Harbert. There’s still a small gap between New Buffalo and where this trail would begin.

The Illinois portion of the Marquette Greenway is already paved.

Connections are being built in Indiana, too.

Late last year, two parts of the greenway in Porter County gained slices of $31.2 million in Next Level Trail grants that Indiana Gov. Eric Holcomb awarded to 14 communities around the state.

These two parts are next to each other, both of which would likely be built in 2025 or 2026, says Mitch Barloga, the active transportation manager for the Northwest Indiana Regional Planning Commission .

In the town of Burns Harbor, a new 0.82-mile trail will go east of Indiana 149, follow a portion of the Little Calumet River, duck beneath a railroad line and head toward the town of Porter; it will include a boardwalk. A $5 million grant helps with an overall cost of $7.5 million. The town is already building bits of greenway trail to the west with other money.

In Porter, a one-mile trail will pick up from there and link to the existing Porter Brickyard Trail at Indiana 49, the Calumet Trail and the Indiana Dunes National Park’s Mnoke Prairie . A $2 million grant helps with the cost of nearly $2.6 million.

Also, this winter, the National Park Service announced that it found “no significant impact” on the environment if, as part of the Marquette Greenway, a good chunk of the current Calumet Trail was rerouted on a 6.3-mile alternative route through the Indiana Dunes National Park.

Currently, the Calumet Trail’s nine miles run west of Michigan City, a straight line through a utility corridor with a crushed-stone surface that regularly turns to puddles and flooding with significant rain. The new route would instead curve and weave through more scenic wooded areas and would include a boardwalk.

Construction will likely wait until next year for the 6.3-mile diversion, thanks to the rising costs of dealing with wet areas, for which Porter County is seeking extra grants, Barloga says.

But he says the two parts of the Calumet Trail that bookend this section will be rebuilt (paved, elevated and better drained) this year along their existing routes: from Michigan City to Beverly Shores and from Mineral Springs Road to Indiana Dunes State Park.

Walk to honor walking

At 3 p.m. April 3, meet at Christo’s Family Restaurant, 2227 N. Michigan St., Plymouth, for hikes of five or 10 kilometers.
