Plan the ultimate African safari with these 12 bush-to-beach destinations
One of life's greatest travel indulgences, an African safari can take years to organize. Since it requires a hefty budget, a couple of grueling days in transit and meticulous planning, chances are it will be a once-in-a-lifetime adventure you enjoy — and one you therefore shouldn't compromise on.
The safari component is generally less than five days for most travelers, leaving plenty of time to combine superb wildlife watching and a classic lodge experience with further exploration or relaxation. For some, this could also involve climbing Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania or visiting Victoria Falls on the Zambia-Zimbabwe border. For others, it may entail wine tasting in South Africa or lazing on a pristine, palm-fringed beach with a cocktail in hand.
When it comes to blissed-out safari extensions, the Indian Ocean offers a few key commodities: undeveloped beaches, spectacular scenery, azure waters rich with marine life — and an abundance of luxurious resorts, including ones you can book with points.
Africa isn't the easiest place to get around, but that doesn't mean it isn't possible to see multiple destinations in one visit. All it will take is a little careful planning. Odds are you'll be required to fly way out of your way to major regional hubs such as Johannesburg 's O.R. Tambo International Airport (JNB) or Nairobi, Kenya's Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (NBO).
While most safari-goers head to the beach to unwind at the end of their trip, there's also something to be said for decompressing from city life and a long-haul flight by adding the beach as a safari preamble. Regardless of which you choose to do first, know that you'll have an incredible vacation full of memorable moments.
Here are TPG's favorite destinations for that ultimate combination of going on safari and visiting the beach.
Bush: The Northern Circuit
Famed for its untouched landscapes and exhilarating wildlife encounters, Tanzania's Northern Circuit is the Africa of dreams. A showcase for the continent's highlights, this well-trodden itinerary features the world-famous Serengeti, snow-capped Mount Kilimanjaro, elephant-filled Tarangire National Park and Ngorongoro Crater, the world's largest intact volcanic caldera.
Arusha is the gateway to the northern Serengeti, as it's a two-hour flight from the capital, Dar es Salaam. Depending on time and budget constraints, you can either fly between the parks, drive the entire circuit or do a combination of both.
Most itineraries begin with the Serengeti, Tanzania's crown jewel. Emblematic grasslands dotted with flat-topped acacia trees are home to more than 2 million animals, including the Big Five: lions, leopards, rhinos, elephants and African buffaloes. Indulge the wonder of it all at a luxury lodge within eyeshot of a watering hole, or head to a semi-permanent tented camp that follows the great migration. In the remote Lamai Triangle, Singita Lamai River Tented Camp offers an intimate, off-the-grid safari experience and features just six luxurious tents, each with plunge pools.
A game drive along the valley floor of Ngorongoro Crater — around a three-hour paved drive south of the Serengeti — is one of the richest wildlife experiences on Earth. More than 25,000 mammals thrive here, including the world's largest concentration of predators, plus zebras, gazelles, warthogs, wildebeests, elephants, baboons and vervet monkeys. Within the conservancy, you can trace 2 million years of human evolution at the UNESCO-inscribed Olduvai Gorge, which preserves the earliest evidence of human ancestors.
Around a four-hour drive south of the crater is another must-visit spot: beautiful Tarangire National Park. It attracts fewer visitors and is beloved for its thriving elephant herds, which feature 2,500-plus animals, making them the densest on Earth.

Beach: Zanzibar
A breathtaking archipelago just 25 miles off Tanzania's Indian Ocean coastline, Zanzibar is everything its name suggests. Traditional dhows (one- or two-mast ships) set sail from bone-white beaches, vibrant coral reefs support diverse marine life and timeless Swahili villages are fringed by lush forests, coconut groves and spice plantations.
Zanzibar is one of the most accessible beach destinations on this list, with frequent direct services from Arusha via Air Tanzania. If you are traveling independently, the one-hour flight from the mainland costs around $180 round trip.
Relaxing on its beaches is certainly Zanzibar's main draw, but it's worth allowing at least a day to explore UNESCO World Heritage-listed Stone Town, one of East Africa's cultural highlights. A flourishing trading post for centuries, the old city's maze of streets is dotted with crumbling limestone and coral buildings, as well as historical churches, mosques and temples.
Just a 15-minute speedboat ride off Zanzibar's northeast coast, Mnemba Island is an unpretentious paradise. The tiny island, blessed with powder-soft sand and luminescent waters, is the setting for andBeyond's conservation-focused hideaway . Getting off the grid doesn't get much better than this. Days are spent snorkeling around the island (about a mile in circumference), swimming with dolphins, practicing yoga, paddleboarding, watching dik-diks scurry around the deck of your Balinese-style banda and enjoying some of the finest and most inventive food you'll find anywhere in Tanzania.
Bush: Masai Mara
The definitive safari destination, Kenya offers a blend of savannah, mountain, wildlife, beach and culture that never fails to inspire awe in those who visit.
The spectacular Masai Mara ecosystem forms the northern extension of Tanzania's Serengeti. A cinematic wilderness of tawny, acacia-dotted plains, the food chain plays out frequently and furiously right before your eyes. Home to a vast inventory of 450-plus animal species (including the Big Five) and glorious scenery, Kenya's popularity has been bolstered by post-pandemic travelers keen to limit border crossings.
For a less crowded safari experience, choose a lodge located on a private conservancy that offers opportunities to venture off roads (sometimes at night) in the company of expert naturalists without worrying about waiting behind multiple vehicles to view a pride of lions. Cottar's Camp has been in operation for over a century and combines a classic aura with luxe amenities and some of Kenya's finest (largely Masai) guides. Wherever you roam, you can expect to see prolific troupes of wildebeests, zebras, impalas, topis and gazelles — and their formidable predators.
While all safari lodges are not created equal, it's the daily rituals of life on the Masai Mara that are unforgettable. You can enjoy an early morning game drive, watch elephants congregate around a watering hole from your deck, treat yourself to a sundowner as sunsets blaze over the seemingly infinite horizon and gather around a campfire under star-studded skies.
Try to time your trip for the great migration, when more than 2 million wildebeests migrate across the Serengeti and the Masai Mara in what is undoubtedly the world's most spectacular wildlife event. Keep an eye on rainfall patterns to determine when is the best time to visit.

Beach: Lamu Island
Often likened to Zanzibar 20 years ago, UNESCO-protected Lamu Island is a picture-perfect paradise of rolling sand dunes, mangrove-fringed beaches and dazzling coral reefs. As East Africa's oldest trading center, it's a world apart from the rest of Kenya and offers a more peaceful retreat than the more developed beaches of Mombasa's north coast.
In the south, Lamu Town has preserved its medina-style architecture and retains a laid-back vibe. Donkeys and dhows are still the main forms of transportation, and the town's car-free streets, which are dotted with churches, mosques and temples, showcase the island's rich cultural heritage composed of African, Omani, Yemeni, Indian and Portuguese influences.
Over the last decade, Lamu has become something of a magnet for Europe 's celebrity set. Intricately carved coral merchant homes now house contemporary boutique hotels and galleries, hip rooftop bars mix stylish sundowners and a busy event schedule speaks to the island's growing wellness movement — notably yoga and meditation retreats.
Just outside Lamu Town, The Red Pepper House has five eclectic rooms decorated with Swahili furnishings, a lush forested setting, warm service and activities tailored to each guest.
Active travelers will also find plenty here to tempt them from the beach. Check out Kiwayu Island for windsurfing, kayaking, fishing and world-class diving and snorkeling.
If you are traveling independently, Lamu can be reached by air from Nairobi via Hahn Air Lines. Flights, which cost $190 round trip, land just across the channel from Lamu on Manda Island.
South Africa and Mozambique
Bush: kruger national park.
Impressive in scale and diversity, Kruger's 16 macro ecozones harbor an astonishing predator count — more than 1,500 lions, 1,000 leopards and 12,000 elephants — as well as wild dogs, zebras, white and black rhinos, giraffes, wildebeests, antelopes and an estimated 470 bird species.
The great appeal of Kruger — especially for first-timers — is its reliable wildlife spotting (even during the green season), unbridled comfort and never-ending "wow" factor that exhilarates even the most world-weary traveler.
When money is no object, the Sabi Sands Game Reserve is the pinnacle of the luxury safari experience. Home to the highest mammal concentration of any private reserve in southern Africa, you won't need to venture far to spot Africa's most charismatic denizens. In fact, it's not unheard of to spot all of the Big Five at Kruger in the space of a day. With only three vehicles permitted at a wildlife sighting at any given time, you'll avoid the feeling that you are riding a safari conveyor belt.
Acclaimed lodges such as Singita Lebombo, Chitwa Chitwa and Londolozi channel eclectic styles — from plush colonial suites to rustic Afro-chic abodes — and are constantly raising the bar with impeccable service, resort-style amenities and unrivaled access to some of Earth's best wildlife viewing. Lavish meals, sundowners, afternoon teas, poolside relaxation and bush walks punctuate the hours between early morning and late afternoon game drives. Many of Kruger's lodges also offer excellent children's programming.

Beach: Bazaruto Archipelago
Blessed with unspoiled natural beauty and impressive biodiversity, Mozambique's Bazaruto Archipelago offers the private island kind of experience that appeals to travelers with deep pockets who are looking to truly disconnect. For most visitors, the logistics are taken care of as part of a tailor-made, fly-in excursion arranged by a safari company.
Bazaruto and its even more far-flung sister archipelago, the Quirimbas Islands, are renowned for their serpentine, palm-fringed beaches where the diving and snorkeling, right offshore, are out of this world. An array of marine life, including whale sharks, manta rays, leatherback turtles, humpback whales and the very rare dugong (sea cow), has been documented here.
With activities and excursions tailored to couples and families, andBeyond's Benguerra Island Lodge is a destination unto itself. It offers luxurious beachfront casinhas (cottages) and cabanas surrounded by palm trees. Guests can take advantage of a swimming pool and an on-site dive center that organizes excursions to world-class dive sites like Two Mile Reef, plus other unforgettable activities, such as dhow cruises, horseback riding in the water and sportfishing excursions.
Frequent daily direct flights with South Africa-based Airlink are available from Johannesburg's airport to Mozambique's Vilankulo Airport (VNX), which sits about a 45-minute scenic boat ride away from the Bazaruto islands. The relatively painless, half-day journey will set you back around $580 round trip.
Bush: Majete Wildlife Reserve
Going by the moniker "The Warm Heart of Africa," tiny Malawi punches way above its weight when it comes to biodiversity.
Roughly the same size as Ohio, it's home to some of the continent's most spectacular landscapes, which span serrated peaks, mystical forests and bucolic grasslands. The Great Rift Valley bisects the country lengthwise, with the colossal Lake Malawi draped across the country's eastern border.
Malawi's lack of celebrity status helps facilitate a more authentic safari experience. It's also one of the most affordable and safest destinations in Africa — a great fit for independent travelers looking to go beyond the "Out of Africa" cliches.
Before a major legislative shake up in 2017, Malawi had earned the notorious distinction of being southern Africa's biggest wildlife trafficking center, mostly due to lax enforcement. Today, its conservation credentials are among the strongest in Africa.
Majete Wildlife Reserve, the nation's oldest park, is a symbol of Malawi's great restoration. Through a steady re-introduction program and community engagement, more than 5,000 animals now thrive within the reserve, including black rhinos, impalas, jackals, elephants, lions, leopards, cheetahs, wild dogs, sable antelopes and buffaloes. Enjoying Big Five reserve status, tourism at Majete is growing, but it remains a magical off-the-beaten-path wilderness ... for now.
The upscale Thawale Camp is ideally located near a watering hole inside the reserve and combines a wilderness safari experience with an authentic ambience, fine food and warm service.

Beach: Lake Malawi
Described as the world's most vibrant freshwater body, UNESCO-designated Lake Malawi is a perfect safari postscript for more budget-minded travelers and those making a return trip to the continent. It offers all the attributes of an idyllic island escape with beautiful bays and coves, sandy beaches and rocky islands, plus marshes inhabited by baboons, monkeys, hippos and prolific birdlife, including kingfishers, egrets, fish eagles and cormorants.
Free from the logistical challenges of many bush-to-beach itineraries, it's just a one-hour transfer from Malawi's Kamuzu International Airport (LLW) to the lake's most scenic beaches, including chilled-out Likoma Island, where you'll find barefoot-chic Kaya Mawa , a boutique ecolodge perched on sandy shores with views of Mozambique in the distance.
The water here is as blue as any tropical destination, and even shallow water teems with cichlid fish, which shimmer in hues of silver, gold, orange and blue. The lake's three distinct water layers don't generally mix (it's a type of meromictic lake), providing an intensely fertile environment where plants, land animals and marine life thrive.
An estimated 950 species of fish populate the lake — more than any other place on Earth — according to the beloved British naturalist David Attenborough. This rich aquatic atmosphere makes it a truly unique underwater safari destination. The real crowd-pleaser is the mbuna fish, which will famously take food directly from your hands.
Zambia and Mauritius
Bush: south luangwa national park.
Victoria Falls, which is lovingly referred to as "the smoke that thunders" by those from the area, is Zambia and Zimbabwe's famous calling card and one of the world's most breathtaking natural wonders. But that's just the start. Far removed from the more commercial safari experiences of its neighbors, the two countries lend themselves to travelers keen to explore beyond their safari vehicles. The region excels at immersive cultural journeys, walking safaris and adrenaline-infused pursuits on the churning rapids of the Zambezi River.
Know, though, that Zambia and Zimbabwe are not for everyone. Their poor infrastructure and limited accommodations can be a challenge or an adventure, depending on your perspective.
Zambia's South Luangwa National Park is the place where the walking safari originated. Diverse habitats encompass plains, woodlands, rivers and marshes and support a predator and prey inventory that rivals that of any African safari destination. The pinnacle of wildlife viewing in Zambia, Luangwa is known for its leopard population, as well as rare creatures such as hartebeests, sables and roans. Buffaloes, impalas, pukus, waterbucks and giraffes are omnipresent, and herds of elephants (up to 70 is not unheard of) and wading hippos can be seen congregating along the Luangwa River.
One of the more luxurious camps in the reserve, Chinzombo, offers comfortable accommodations, expert guides and a prime river location.
Beach: Mauritius
One of the most alluring Indian Ocean destinations, Mauritius is much more than just a dreamy island paradise. Gorgeous beaches, crystal-clear lagoons and forested preserves provide the backdrop for thrilling adventures, ecotourism and wellness pursuits. For a culture fix, the museums and mansions of Port Louis are filled with fascinating artifact maps and curios that trace the island's storied history.
Belle Mare beach, on the east coast, has retained its unspoiled charm. Its warm, azure waters beckon snorkelers and divers, as Mauritius is ringed by the world's longest unbroken coral reef. With its string of luxe resorts, hip bars and gourmet restaurants, the developed resort of Grand Baie, on the northwest coast, channels a more cosmopolitan vibe.
Active types will find plenty of ways to interact with the rugged, mountainous landscape. Hikers can take on the 4.5-mile steep, uneven trail to the top of the UNESCO-inscribed Le Morne Brabant mountain. Meanwhile, the coastal forests of Île aux Aigrettes provide sanctuary to an array of endemic and endangered wildlife species.
You will likely spend a day in transit to reach Mauritius from Zambia, and you may even require an overnight layover. There are regular nonstop flights from Kenneth Kaunda International Airport (LUN) in Lusaka, Zambia's capital, to Johannesburg, from where its a four-hour flight — operated daily by South African Airways — to Mahé, Mauritius' main island.
Mauritius caters well to travelers looking to splurge and you''ll be spoiled for choice when it comes to exclusive resorts and private island experiences: The Four Seasons Resort Mauritius at Anahita, Shangri-La Le Touessrok and One&Only Le Saint Géran, to name a few.

Namibia and the Seychelles
Bush: etosha national park.
An accessible and less visited safari destination, Namibia captures the imagination of families and adventure seekers with its enigmatic desert landscapes, wild and rugged coastline, colossal sand dunes and rare desert-adapted mammals, insects and reptiles.
Known as the "Place of Mirages," Etosha National Park combines Namibia's best wildlife watching with an austerely beautiful landscape of golden plains, dazzling salt pans and dense thickets. What really sets Etosha apart, though, is just how easy it is to spot its wildlife species.
Across stark, vast plains, watering holes draw elephants, gazelles, giraffes, jackals and black and white rhinos, as well as marauding lions, cheetahs and more elusive leopards. The floodlit Okaukuejo watering hole ranks among Africa's bucket list experiences thanks, in part, to its nightly game-watching vigils.
Antelope species here are loaded with superlatives: You'll find the continent's smallest (African antelope), rarest (blackface impala), biggest (eland) and bounciest (springbok) all inhabiting this eye-catching landscape.
Located on Etosha's southern fringes, in the privately owned Ongava Game Reserve, Ongava Lodge comprises 14 rustic chalets and a large pool and dining area overlooking a nearby watering hole. Little Ongava — also within the private reserve — offers a more exclusive experience with just three luxurious suites with outdoor showers and private plunge pools.
Beyond Etosha, thrill-seekers can track wildlife on foot, sandboard down massive dunes in Swakopmund and soar over the Namib Desert in a hot air balloon.
Namibia is celebrated for its bold conservation initiatives and well-developed tourist infrastructure. While it's one of the most straightforward destinations in Africa for renting a car and exploring independently, guided tours here are considered the gold standard. Most travelers from Europe and the U.S travel to Namibia through Johannesburg or Cape Town . Air Namibia flies direct from Frankfurt to Windhoek, and Qatar Airways ' direct flights to Doha, Qatar, offer frequent stopover routes to the U.S. and Europe.

Beach: Seychelles
Famed as a luxury hideaway popular with royalty and celebrities, the Seychelles archipelago has an otherworldly beauty. Ribbons of sugar-white sand gently slope to waters in every shade of blue, and tropical habitats filled with rare indigenous palms give way to vanilla and spice plantations and orchid fields.
The most visited islands, Mahé, Praslin and La Digue, draw gilded honeymooners to their ultra glamorous resorts — including a luxurious Four Seasons outpost and the boutique Mango House Seychelles — but there's also a fine selection of family-oriented properties (including points hotels ) within striking distance of breathtaking beaches.
Anse Lazio frequently ranks as one of the world's best beaches; its turquoise, reef-sheltered waters teem with marine life. Lushly forested granite cliffs frame the sheltered bay of Anse Louis, one of Mahé's more remote beaches, and it was on heavenly Anse Source d'Argent that Hollywood movies "Cast Away" and "Crusoe" were filmed.
Uninhabited until the late 18th century, the Seychelles archipelago is hailed as the "Galápagos of the Indian Ocean." UNESCO-inscribed Vallée de Mai Nature Reserve on Praslin is a lost world of rare endemic species, including the famous coco de mer, a massive palm tree thought to have grown in the ocean. On the remote Aldabra atoll, thousands of giant tortoises weighing up to 500 pounds thrive, having evolved in isolation.
From Namibia's capital, Windhoek, you'll need to connect through Johannesburg. Air Seychelles is the only airline that flies the five-hour, nonstop route to Mahé several times a week.

Safari and Beach Holidays 2024/25
The Best Of Both Worlds
A Travel Butlers safari and beach holiday really is the best of both worlds. It’s like having two amazing holidays in Africa rolled into one. First, you’ll spend your days waking up to the sounds of the African bush, taking exhilarating game drives over the plains to spot Big 5 animals in their natural environment. Then, you’ll head to a tropical beach worthy of any postcard to totally unwind and reflect on your wildlife experience. It’s the perfect holiday, offering a wonderful mix of adventure and relaxation.
Which is the best way round to do this?
However, after a series of heart-thumping game drives, you’ll probably be ready for some serious down time and an exotic beach overlooking the Indian Ocean is the perfect way to get it! This means that you’ll arrive home relaxed rather than frazzled and ready to get back to reality again.
How many nights at each destination?
A classic 7 night holiday would usually be a mix of 3 nights on safari and 4 nights on the beach. If you’re looking for a 10 night holiday, this could combine 4 nights on safari with 6 nights at the beach, or if soaking up some tropical sunshine is important to you, 3 nights on safari and 7 nights on the beach would do the trick.
If you have longer than 3 or 4 night to spend on safari then most people would combine 2 different wildlife destinations, to give them a greater variety of experiences.
Which places work best together?
When you’re planning your safari and beach holiday, it makes sense to choose destinations that are relatively close together. This will cut down both the time and money spent on travel during your holiday. You will also want to make sure that you have an idea of what the weather will be like at your chosen beach destination, so you may take a look at our guide to when to visit Africa's best beaches .
If you’re heading to Kenya on your safari holiday, you don’t need to travel anywhere else to find beautiful beaches, as Kenya has a stunning coastline all of its own. This means that you won’t incur any additional visa costs by travelling between countries during your trip. Equally, it is very easy to hop between Kenya and Zanzibar should the 'spice island' appeal for your beach stay.
We’ve listed some of our favourite safari and beach combinations below, which we hope will give you some inspiration for your own trip. If you would like to use one of these as a starting point for creating your own unique Travel Butlers holiday or if would just like to discuss some initial ideas, simply complete the enquiry form or give one of our friendly experts a call on 01483 266725 .

An African family safari and beach holiday might be one of the most rewarding you ever spend together. Watching the Africa day as it unfolds in front of you and through the eyes of your children can be simply magical and an experience you’ll remember forever.
Additional Information
Have a look at sample itineraries for family safari ideas or read what makes a good safari holiday
But remember, budget, age of children, family size, timing all have an impact on our recommendation. (NOTE: for a lot of families, timing will be dictated by school holidays. This will also affect price – with international flights being quite hefty unless they are booked in advance. A top tip is October half term where many lodges and flights are out of peak prices.)
Many parents have concerns about safety of their children. Is it safe? Yes. Camps are set up to ensure all guests are safe. Some have specially appointed staff to keep an eye on your children. Some also have guides that are specifically chosen for their ability to stimulate children and get them really excited about the safari experience.
Health can also be a concerning factor with worries about malaria and other tropical diseases. Your local doctor will advise you regarding innoculations and malaria prophylaxis. All camps have mosquito protection and are regularly sprayed.
Families are welcome at many of the lodges but there is often a limit to the age group. Safari in Africa is not ideal for babies/small children. For the investment required and, for you all to take something out of it, we would suggest safaris are better suited to older children – probably 7/8+.
Sharing a lodge with family friends often means camp take-overs in the smaller camps, allowing you to dictate your own timing preferences and often saving you money. But there are many options available to you and countries have developed their own way of delivering the best family experience.
A Tanzania safari is often perfectly set up for family groups, particularly in the north (Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Tarangire). Here, by having your own vehicle with driver, you are already self contained and able to move from camp to camp. Although this is probably better for those families with slightly older children (12+) who will enjoy the variety of game longer excursions can bring. An alternative option is to chose a more lodge based safari where you can create more of your own agenda and timetable. Here it could be better to head to the Selous.
Tanzania family safaris combine well with a beach holiday in Zanzibar. Throughout Zanzibar there are numerous family friendly beach options from resort type hotels to cheaper guesthouses, all offering varying degrees of watersport activities.
Kenya also offers some fabulous options for a family safari experience – with a gentle introduction around Nairobi and then a full variety of options as you head out to the parks – depending on how deep (or how wild) you wish your family safari experience to be. There are some great family friendly lodges in the Mara plus some more lifestyle lodges in the northern parks including Lewa and Meru. With easy access to the beach, this makes Kenya an idea destination for a family safari and beach holiday.
Zambia is home of the safari house where families all sleep under the comfort of one roof. Ideal for 2 or 3 families travelling together. Many owner-run smaller camps who either have their own or had children at the camp are remarkably child friendly. Having the camp to yourselves allows you to develop an agenda suited to your own preferences. A Zambia safari can combine with some extreme sports your older children (or you) may enjoy – whether it be bungy-jumping over the Victoria Falls or white-water rafting down the Zambezi rapids- these are amongst the best of the best.
Botswana game rich classroom but often expensive since families are required to take-over entire camps with high entry costs. But, if you can afford it, Botswana can quickly and without too much strain, make animal story books, films and zoos all come to life. We would recommend heading to the Okavango Delta and trying Chitabe or Seba camps.
Namibia’s surreal landscape offers fun and adventure and, like the hybrid animals that have evolved within it, so have some of the sports: like sand-boarding, dune buggying, desert ballooning, kayaking and cycle safaris (all probably suited to slighty older families). Younger families may prefer a self-drive safari although it does mean some hefty mileage. But Central Highlands, Etosha National Park and Twyfelfontein regions are all possible.
For families with younger children, South Africa is often an easier option – malaria free and very child friendly. A family safari in South Africa can combine well with a trip to the cape for some beach fun. Kruger National Park has some great private concessions or cheaper government owned options both of which will give you an exciting family safari.
Our recommendation is do it – you’ll spend some real quality time together. It’ll be the best holiday you’ve ever had.

Serengeti was extraordinary, in particular the south but also the central part, and we’re glad to have visited Ngorongoro as well. Good service and excellent food. All flights and pickups worked perfectly. Thank you so much for preparing our trip.

6 Of The Best Beach & Safari Holidays
By Alex Edwards
Whether it’s your first time or your fifth, every safari holiday is a truly magical experience that will remain with you forever. As exceptional as they are, the days spent travelling the savannah are full of non-stop action. You’ll be up before sunrise, adventuring under the searing African sun during the day, and spending the evenings gazing up at the magnificent starry skies. That’s why, when you’re not exploring, some much-needed R&R is in order.
For this reason, a safari and beach holiday is the perfect combination. As well as immersing yourself in the unforgettable wildlife of Africa’s expansive landscapes, you can kick back and enjoy an idyllic beach escape that leaves you feeling pampered and nourished.
This spectacular pairing will be the trip of a lifetime, so don’t waste any time booking your dream beach and safari holiday.
Have a look at our top six destinations for inspiration.
1. Selous and Mafia Island, Tanzania
Best experienced between July and October, this safari and beach holiday combination offers the opportunity to get off the beaten track into remote, remarkable places.
Selous is the largest game park in Tanzania and offers a stark contrast to all others in almost every way. Only a few hundred feet above sea level, this park boasts a huge variety of wildlife which you won’t see on other safari holidays. Stay in the Nomad Tanzania’s Sand Rivers Selous for five-star service in a small but luxurious safari lodge, and explore the different habitats on foot to discover wondrous places inaccessible by car.
Over on Mafia Island , which lies off the Rufiji delta just a 30-minute flight away from Dar es Salaam, you can embrace everything Tanzania’s first marine park has to offer. The waters provide the ultimate diving experience, with over 400 species of fish to see. Rest your head at Pole Pole on the east coast of the island, seven small bungalow suites that provide an intimate slice of perfection.
2. Waterberg, South Africa and Bazaruto Island, Mozambique
Tucked away in Limpopo province, the pristine, rugged and ancient Waterberg region doesn’t make it on to most South African travel itineraries. Thankfully this loss is your gain, as Waterberg is a fantastic alternative to the packed and overexposed Kruger area. Unlike the latter, which tends to feel slightly controlled and regulated, Waterberg exudes freedom and authenticity, boasting soaring mountain peaks and vast open plains.
3. High Atlas Mountains and Essaouira, Morocco
If you’re keen to go off-the-grid then you must experience our expeditions in the High Atlas Mountains. Led by a herd of mules carrying the beautiful tented camps, you will be led through the breathtaking wilderness by our expert guides. Your days exploring on foot will be followed by nights beneath a blanket of stars.
This enchanting experience can be perfectly complemented by a few days of bliss at Essaouira, a laid-back seaside town where you can spend your time delving into the sheltered markets and enjoying delightful fresh fish in the many fabulous restaurants on offer. Although not a beach by definition, this quaint town by the sea is sure to calm things down after your time in the wild.
4. Sossusvlei and Namibia’s Skeleton Coast
If you’re looking for a twist on the beach and safari holiday, then consider Namibia for an adventure encompassing the giant dunes of Sossusvlei and the wild Skeleton Coast. This flying safari by plane will see you soar above some of Africa’s most beautiful scenery and enjoy views of extraordinary desert-adapted elephants and lions. Expect to drift over sand waves, land on deserted beaches, and drop into valleys far beyond the reach of humans.
Make no mistake, this is one of the greatest experiences in Africa, and anything but your typical safari and beach holiday package. After all, it may not be wise to put anything more than a toe into the raging, shark-filled waters of the south Atlantic!
End your trip with a few days at Swakopmund, Namibia’s largest coastal town, for wonderful seafood and a chance to soak up the beaches and palm-lined streets. And as you tuck into your prawns, try to convince yourself that the previous four days exploring Namibia by private plane weren’t just a dream.
5. Luangwa Valley and Lake Malawi, Zambia
The Luangwa Valley in Zambia is probably the most famous park in the country and boasts all-round good game drive and, in recent years, a well-earned reputation for walking safaris . We love an adventure on foot that allows you to be at one with nature and experience the thrill of tracking animals in their territory, with unforgettable viewings on their terms.
After a walking safari in the Luangwa Valley, Lake Malawi provides the perfect escape, which some may argue is even better than a beach. The water is warm, clear and home to a colourful array of tropical fish. This makes it an impeccable spot for snorkelling, learning to dive or kayaking. Still an uncommon destination on the tourist map, Lake Malawi has a small offering of gorgeously designed lodges that have retained a wonderfully authentic feel.
6. Masoala and Antongil Bay, Madagascar
Few places offer an all-in-one beach and safari holiday as comprehensively as Madagascar . Head to the Masoala peninsula in the north east of the island to find an exquisite rainforest tumbling to the shores of the Indian Ocean. Between July and September, you can watch spectacular humpback whales glide, breach and slap their tails from the comfort of your beachside bedroom. Of course, you could always get a little closer. Stick your head under the water and you’ll hear their song, or paddle out in a kayak and you may see them pass you just a few metres away.
Take guided walks into the jungle behind your campsite to find endemic lemurs, brightly coloured birds and plant species that are simply unknown to science. Later, you can swim and snorkel in the warm waters of Antongil Bay and indulge in the local rhum arrangé and exquisite seafood with a French-Indonesian twist at the beach bar. This safari and beach combo is distinctly un-run-of-the-mill and will appeal to the more adventurous, but an exceptional destination and one of our favourites.

Tanzania offers a similar, traditional safari experience to Kenya and is also home to the tropical spice island of Zanzibar, one of the most popular beach destinations in Africa. Combining a Tanzania safari with Zanzibar offers a complete East African experience, allowing you to explore diverse wildlife, immerse yourself in local culture, and enjoy the best of both worlds with thrilling adventures on land and tranquil relaxation by the sea.
- Big Five : spot the Big Five, as well as an abundance of other animals and bird species.
- Great Migration: Serengeti National Park is renowned for its vast savannas and the annual Great Migration, where millions of wildebeests and zebras migrate in search of greener pastures.
- Ngorongoro Crater: a UNESCO natural wonder with a high concentration of wildlife in a unique caldera setting. Home to the Big Five on the crater floor.
- Cultural Immersion : Tanzania is culturally diverse, with over 120 ethnic groups. Interacting with local tribes like the Maasai and Hadzabe allows you to gain insight into their customs, traditions, and ancient ways of life.
- Varied accommodation : Tanzania offers a range of luxury lodges and tented camps that provide a high level of comfort and personalized service, enhancing your safari experience.
- Easy beach access - Zanzibar is located just off the Tanzanian coast, making it easy to combine a safari with a beach holiday. You can take a short flight or a boat ride from the mainland to Zanzibar.
- Idyllic Beaches : Zanzibar is famous for its stunning beaches, clear turquoise waters, and white sands. Whether you choose Nungwi, Kendwa, Paje, or Matemwe, you'll find a wide range of beach resorts and lodges to suit your preferences.
- Water Activities : Zanzibar offers excellent opportunities for water sports such as snorkelling, scuba diving, and sailing. The island's coral reefs are rich in marine life, providing fantastic underwater experiences.
- Historic Stone Town : In addition to its beautiful beaches, Zanzibar has a rich history with a blend of African, Arab, and European influences. You can explore historic Stone Town, a UNESCO World Heritage site, and learn about the island's spice trade heritage.

3. South Africa Kruger safari and Mozambique beaches
The Kruger National Park is a short hop from Johannesburg airport in South Africa , which is the same airport to head towards the beaches of Mozambique , so these two destinations combine wonderfully well as a beach and bush option.
- Abundant wildlife : spot the Big Five, as well as an abundance of other animals and over 500 bird species. The Kruger National Park is a wonderful place to see rare wild dogs.
- Private Reserves: South Africa was the first country to introduce private reserves for those wanting a more exclusive game-viewing experience. There are no fences between the Kruger National Park and reserves such as the famous Sabi Sands which border these meaning vast amounts of wildlife, without the crowds and a whole host of additional activities available.
- High-standard accommodation : South Africa offers a range of luxury lodges and tented camps which are often priced more competitively than those in Kenya and Tanzania. Generally, South Africa is known for having exceptionally high accommodation, service and food standards.
- Self - drive : If you want to explore at your own pace, the Kruger in South Africa is one of the most popular places to try a self-drive safari thanks to the tarmac roads which are well signposted.
- Walking and night safaris : In the private reserves attached to Kruger you can try a whole host of other safari activities including walking safaris and night drives.
- Stunning Archipelagos : Bazaruto Archipelago in Mozambique is easy to access from Johannesburg. This group of islands, including Bazaruto, Benguerra, and Magaruque, offers some of the most pristine and picturesque beaches in Mozambique. The crystal-clear waters, white sand dunes, and abundant marine life make it a paradise for snorkelling, diving, and water sports.
- Whale Watching: During the humpback whale migration season, which occurs between June and October, Mozambique's waters become a hotspot for whale watching. These magnificent creatures pass through the area on their annual journey, providing a thrilling opportunity to witness their majestic displays.
- Snorkelling and diving: The coastal waters of Mozambique are teeming with diverse marine life, making it a fantastic destination for snorkelling and scuba diving. You can explore vibrant coral reefs and encounter an array of marine species, including tropical fish, rays, turtles, and even dolphins.

4. South Africa’s Eastern Cape and the Garden Route
Another enduring popular option is to combine a South Africa safari with the Garden Route which allows you to have a very varied trip combining a safari with buzzing Cape Town, the Winelands and the Garden Route beaches.
Typically, you would either choose to combine the Kruger National Park (or one of the private conservancies attached) and then fly down to Cape Town from Johannesburg and begin the Garden Route from here, or else combine the garden route with Eastern Cape near the city of Port Elizabeth – we are going to focus on this second option.
The Eastern Cape is home to several private game reserves, such as Amakhala, Shamwari, and Kwandwe. After your safari experience in the Eastern Cape, you can easily proceed to the Garden Route , which starts not too far from the game reserves. You can drive along the scenic N2 highway, and within a few hours, you'll be immersed in the breathtaking beauty of the Garden Route.
This option is perfect if you want to dip your toe in a little bit of safari and add in some beach time, but to have a well-rounded and varied holiday.
- Private Game Reserves: The Eastern Cape is home to several private game reserves, such as Amakhala, Shamwari, and Kwandwe, which offer exclusive safari experiences with luxurious lodges and intimate wildlife encounters.
- Abundant Wildlife: These private game reserves boast diverse wildlife populations, including the Big Five, as well as other animals like cheetahs, zebras, giraffes, and various antelope species.
- Malaria-Free Safaris : Unlike some other safari destinations in South Africa, the Eastern Cape is largely malaria-free, making it a safer option for families and travellers who prefer to avoid malaria-prone areas.
- Family-Friendly : Many lodges in the Eastern Cape cater to families, offering child-friendly activities and accommodations, making it an excellent choice for family safaris.
- Beautiful beaches: Such as Plettenberg Bay are very popular destinations along the Garden Route and have whale-watching opportunities (seasonal), and nature reserves like Robberg Nature Reserve. It is worth noting that the sea here isn’t as warm as the Indian Ocean.
- Whale watching : Hermanus is one of the whale-watching capitals in the world and you can often see whales from the shore. The clifftop paths woven with flowers are an absolute must, and there are sandy beaches here too.
- Ostriches : Oudtshoorn is located just off the Garden Route, and is known as the "Ostrich Capital of the World." It offers unique experiences like visiting ostrich farms and exploring the Cango Caves.
- Winelands : Whilst not strictly the Garden Route, it is a short throw to the Winelands of Stellenbosch and Franschhoek which make a wonderful place to relax and enjoy long lunches surrounded by mountains and with some of the best wine in the world.
- Cape Town : the cosmopolitan town of Cape Town has a huge array of museums, markets, and restaurants, as well as being home to a number of sandy beaches of which Camps Bay is particularly popular.

If you’re looking for something a little bit different and off the beaten track, then Zambia and Malawi are such to tick the box.

The country's national parks, like South Luangwa, Lower Zambezi, and Kafue, provide excellent opportunities to see diverse wildlife, including the Big Five.

- Swimming and Snorkelling : Lake Malawi is safe for swimming and has the unique feature of being home to a vast array of colourful cichlid fish, making it a paradise for snorkelers and underwater enthusiasts.
- Island Retreats : The islands of Likoma and Chizumulu in Lake Malawi offer secluded and tranquil beach getaways, with beautiful lodges and a remote atmosphere.

Unusual safari and beach combinations
If you’re looking for a completely different safari and beach experience, then Namibia could be for you. A safari within the desert is a world away from the vast, lush plains of the Masai Mara, and the harsh coastline of Namibia lends itself to discovering desert-adapted plants, seals, and adrenaline-fueled activities rather than sunbathing on a beach. A Namibia safari and beach holiday offer a perfect blend of adventure, wildlife encounters, stunning landscapes, and relaxation along the picturesque coastline. It's a journey that provides a deep appreciation for Namibia's diverse natural beauty and its unique offerings in both the desert and the sea.

- Flamingos and pelicans: Just south of Swakopmund, Walvis Bay is known for its lagoon, which is a haven for birdlife, including flamingos and pelicans. Boat cruises in the lagoon offer opportunities to see dolphins, seals, and sometimes even whales.
- Wild coastlines: The Skeleton Coast is a rugged and desolate coastline known for its shipwrecks and otherworldly landscapes. It provides a unique and eerie beauty for those seeking a more off-the-beaten-path beach experience, but ideal for those looking for adventure!
- Go at your own pace : Namibia is predominately a self-drive destination allowing you to take your time, marvel at the incredible scenery and stop as you please.

Safari & Beach Holidays
A safari and beach holiday is a timeless classic and deservedly one of our most popular. Combine thrilling game drives across the savannah plains and through the African bush, with time on a heavenly tropical beach, and you have the ingredients of a true holiday of a lifetime. There is nothing quite as romantic as a safari honeymoon, staying in small camps and lodges, often lit by paraffin lamps, where the service is nothing short of superb. And the perfect way to dust off after an adventure in the bush is beside the warm seas of the Indian Ocean.

One only feels really free when one can go in whatever direction one pleases over the plains." We couldn't put it better ourselves!

Safari and Beach Holidays
Is there a better combination than the thrill of a safari and a tranquil beach stay? We don't think so. Simply put, safari and beach holidays are the ultimate mix of adventure and relaxation. Spend a few days waking up early in the African bush, heading out on an exciting wildlife-filled game drive to spot incredible animals like the Big Five, cheetahs, warthogs, hippos and more.
Kenya safari and beach holidays and Tanzania safari and beach holidays represent a true slice of the continent, where stunning camps pitched in the middle of the African plains offer authenticity and wildlife encounters in abundance. Then you can escape to the East African coast or the beautiful islands offshore. If you want a more luxury safari and beach holiday, then you can't go wrong with South Africa . Rustic-luxe camps are like little cocoons of heaven, with a lot of them affording memorable animal encounters from your room. What's more, all safari options are all-inclusive, so there are no hidden costs involved.
Your options for the beach part of your holiday aren't limited, either, from the spice island of Zanzibar to the gorgeous granite islands of the Seychelles and endless sandy swathes of Mauritius . This combination is perfect for any type of adventure, whether it's a family holiday or safari and beach honeymoon .
Where to Go on a Safari Beach Holiday
Safari beach faq.
Simply put, a safari and beach holiday combines a wildlife-watching experience with a relaxing stay on a beach in one trip. It's an irresistible blend of epic animal encounters and some much-needed downtime on a tropical sun-soaked beach. It's a classic combo which is a very popular way to combine two destinations in one holiday of a lifetime!
While the idea of a safari and beach holiday is simple, there are plenty of different destination which you can combine with one another. East Africa is a great place for a safari, with both Kenya and Tanzania offering unforgettable animal encounters, including the Great Migration if you time your trip right. Then, you can wind down either on the Kenya Coast or on the enchanting island archipelago of Zanzibar .
South Africa is often a better option for first-time safari goers and families. You can twin a South African safari with a far-flung beach escape in the Indian Ocean, either to Mauritius or the Seychelles , or if you really want to go off-grid, the pristine sands of Mozambique .
If you've never been on a safari before, it can be tricky to know exactly what to take with you. Firstly, please be aware that for safety and logistical reasons, there are luggage restrictions on all transfers by light aircraft, which are often operated on the internal flights to airports near the safari camp you might be staying at. The maximum weight allowance is usually 20kg (sometimes 15kg) and bags must be soft-sided, with no wheels or frame. Excess luggage can usually be stored while you're on safari.
We'd strongly advise packing sun cream and taking a pair of sunglasses, as while you're on a game drive, you're out in the open for several hours, with very little shade. Insect repellent is also highly recommended, as Malaria is a risk in East Africa and parts of South Africa. Even if you're staying in a Malaria-free reserve, you should still take some.
There aren't any unusual things to pack for the beach part of your holiday. Sun cream and sunglasses are essential, as well as your swimming costume! Many beach resorts also require you to dress smartly in the evenings, so it's worth checking exactly what your resort's dress code is before you travel.
If you're wondering what clothes you should take on safari, that's answered in the next question in this FAQ section.
To maximise your chances of spotting wildlife on safari, look to blend in with your surroundings. Wear neutral colours such as khaki and olive green, which are similar to the bush and less conspicuous to animals. Try to avoid blue or black clothing – those colours are known to be attractive to insects. Game drives can get very warm, especially in the summer, so pack plenty of light cotton-blend clothing, so you don't get too hot! Rain showers can occur, so a lightweight waterproof is also useful. Comfortable walking shoes or lightweight hiking boots are recommended, especially if you want to do a walking safari.
If you're going on safari during the winter in either South Africa or East Africa, pack a fleece or something warm – you'll need it first thing in the morning! Consider packing a windbreaker, too, to help deflect the wind when you're whizzing along in your safari vehicle.
You'll already have packed a swimming costume in anticipation for the beach part of your safari and beach holiday, but it's handy to know that some safari lodges have their own pools, too! Smart attire isn't needed for evening meals, but long trousers and long-sleeve tops will help protect against the insects.
A safari and beach holiday can start from around £2,700 per person, which typically includes three nights on safari, followed by four or five nights on the beach. Usually, destinations in East Africa like Kenya and Tanzania are more affordable than South Africa, which is regarded as a more luxury safari option.
Obviously, the price can rise depending on your accommodation options, the board basis on the beach portion of your holiday (safari is all-inclusive) and how long you stay for.
The term Big Five was originally coined by wildlife hunters, who were referring to the five most difficult animals to track and hunt on foot – the African lion, African elephant, Cape buffalo, leopard and rhino. Now, the phrase has been adopted to reflect the five most iconic animals to spot on safari!
For a lot of people, ticking off the Big Five is understandably the highlight of their trip but it's also just as thrilling when you spot any of the other animals you can see, with the likes of hippos and cheetahs no less magnificent, but not 'members' of the Big Five. The Big Five has also spawned other 'groups' of animals you can also see on safari, including the Little Five – elephant shrew, buffalo weaver, leopard tortoise, antlion and rhino beetle.
Absolutely! Even though you are in an open safari vehicle during game drives, you are always accompanied by an experienced guide. They will give you a detailed safety briefing before you set off, which is done to ensure your welfare but not diminish from your safari experience.
A lot of safari camps are set in the heart of African's wildest plains, some with no physical boundaries so wildlife can wander freely. This can initially be a little concerning for families, especially those with younger children, but every precaution is taken and your safety is paramount. You are advised to stick to the clearly marked paths and after darkness falls, if you move between the lodge's communal buildings and your room, you're always escorted by an armed ranger.
One of the reasons for Safari's being a high value holiday is the size of the caps, where they are in remote locations ensure authentic, private safari experiences with fewer guests. Fresh food and drink to remote locations is organised professionally and at a cost. The experience is one you will never forget.
Safari Beach Combinations
Best time for a safari and beach holiday.
The best time to go on safari in South Africa is from May to November. Even though this is South Africa's winter, days are dry and sunny and the thin vegetation makes spotting wildlife that bit easier! For an East African adventure, we'd recommend planning a safari and beach holiday for the UK summertime, with slightlydifferent seasons for Kenya (July-September) and Tanzania (June-October). This avoids the countries' rainy seasons and means you won't miss out on the continent's iconic wildlife highlight, the Great Migration, where millions of wildebeest make their way from the Serengeti in Tanzania to the Masai Mara in Kenya.

Safari holidays
Incredible safari holidays with kuoni.
No matter how many wildlife documentaries you’ve seen, nothing can prepare you for the real thing. Let us take you on an African safari holiday .
The term ‘safari’ comes from a Swahili word meaning ‘journey’. Take Jeep rides deep into the wilderness or fly into tiny national park airstrips where lions roam the runway. Soar over herds of zebra at sunrise in a hot-air balloon, sleep out in a luxury treehouse under a blanket of stars, or book your seat for the greatest wildlife show on Earth where over a million wildebeest migrate across the scorched plains.
We’ve spent more than 40 years finding the best African safari experiences and places to stay. We can put you in touch with incredible local guides and tell you about the safari camps where elephants walk right through the lobby. Our safari experts love sharing their tips and advice to make sure you have the best safari holiday possible – in fact, we were voted Best Medium Safari, Nature & Wildlife Holiday Company at the British Travel Awards 2019.
We know that some guests enjoy a more sociable experience with like-minded travellers, while others love the thrill of an independent adventure, so with us you can choose an escorted small group safari or an independent tailor-made safari where you’ll have your own private driver/guide.
Whether it’s your first trip to Africa or you just can’t stop going back, talk to us and we can help create the perfect tailor-made safari for you.
