21 Places To Visit Santa In Ireland This Christmas

santa visits tipperary

The run-up to Christmas is a highlight for many families every year, with twinkly lights everywhere, festive parties and nativity plays, and of course, a trip to visit Santa!

The elves at everymum have been researching the best options for visiting Santa in Ireland in 2023. Read on to find the best options for your family.

A trip to see Santa used to mean one of two options: The local shopping centre, or the local department store. Either way, there was usually an elf, there might be a present, and there was always a man in a red suit. It was quick and easy. A no-frills experience, but often the highlight of the Christmas.

Today, it’s not just about going to your shopping centre, oh no. There are now “destinations” and “experiences” where you can visit Santa in his winter wonderland or have a video call live from Lapland in the comfort of your own home!

No longer just a queue and a three-minute chat with the main man; there are train rides, magical trails, forest walks, feeding animals, sleighs, live shows, Mrs Claus, and gallons of hot chocolate (or if you’re lucky, mulled wine). Although of course, it all costs a bit more than Santy in Switzers ever did.

Searching online it might be difficult to make sense of the numerous destinations around the country. But don't worry, we've done the phoning and the googling, and put this list together for you.

It’s just a sample of the many Santa experience options available – based on good online and real-life reviews.

But, if you are not sure whether to go and explore the county, let this post about the best things to do in Tipperary, Ireland help you make up your mind.

Despite being a landlocked county, Tipperary has plenty to offer visitors. With low-lying central fields and edges with rolling hills that spill over into neighbouring counties, there are plenty of Tipperary tourist attractions to please every kind of visitor and traveller. From the iconic Rock of Cashel to lesser-known places, and with lots of opportunities to get out in nature, Tipperary should be on everyone’s Ireland bucket list!

Best things to do in Tipperary, Ireland

Whether you’ve heard of County Tipperary or not, you are sure to have at least heard about one of the most famous landmarks in Ireland that are found in this large southern county on the Emerald Isle. In this list of the best things to do in Tipperary, Ireland you’ll find lots of ideas to fill many a day’s exploring the county.

Rock of Cashel

By far the most popular thing to do in Tipperary is to pay a visit to the iconic Rock of Cashel . As one of the best-known historical sites in Ireland , the Rock of Cashel welcomes tens of thousands of visitors each year.

A vertical picture of the Rock of Cashel in County Tipperary, Ireland with the Rock on the hill in the background and a winding road in the foreground

Built on a rocky hill overlooking the Tipperary landscape, the Rock of Cashel is an abbey and religious site standing on the traditional seat of the Kings of Munster. Handed over to the church in the early 12 th century, the site grew as a religious centre until it was besieged by Cromwellian forces in 1647.

There are plenty of buildings to explore at the Rock of Cashel as well as its graveyard. The abbey is roofless, but the remaining arches give a sense of what it must have looked like. There is also a Round Tower, chapel, and other buildings to explore. This is by far one of the most popular tourist sites in Ireland and you should aim to get there as soon as it opens or arrive later in the day to avoid the coach tour groups that make a stop here.

Cahir Castle and other castles in Tipperary

As with most counties in Ireland, Tipperary has its fair share of castles to explore. One of the most popular is Cahir Castle . Situated on an island in the River Suir, Cahir Castle is one of the largest in Ireland.

Built in the 13 th century by the O’Brien family, a Munster royal family descendant of Brian Boru, Cahir castle is a well-preserved Irish castle and has audio-visual displays and guided tours for those who wish to join one. That said, you can easily explore the castle yourself and you can also enjoy Cahir Castle with kids .

A picture of Cahir Castle, Tipperary from across the River Suir

Farney Castle is an early medieval castle built in the late 12 th century and is the only round tower in Ireland occupied as a family home. The present round tower dates from 1475 and was built as part of the defensive system by the powerful Butler family. Tours of the castle are available daily.

Another castle on the River Suir is Ormond Castle , located on the east side of Carrick-on-Suir. It is an Elizabethan manor house dating from the mid-15 th century and was joined to an earlier medieval riverside castle. Visitors can explore the castle through audio-visual displays which bring the castle’s history to life.

Loughmoe Castle is a ruined castle dating from the turn of the 13 th century. It was once the ancestral home of the Purcell family. It stands on farmland, and if you can find the owner, ask permission before visiting, although it is said they are used to visitors. Note, that since the castle is a ruin, you cannot access all parts and it is safer to enjoy from the grounds outside.

Redwood Castle , also known as Egan Castle, was built by the Normans around 1200 and was occupied until the MacEgans were installed in the lands. This family remained at the castle until the Cromwellian conquest of Ireland in the mid-1600s. After standing ruined for over 300 years, some restoration occurred and while it remains a private residence, it is open to the public at certain times during the summer months.

A picture of the tower keep of Redwood Castle, Tipperary

There are also other castles to visit in County Tipperary including:

  • Roscrea Castle – 13th-century motte castle located in Roscrea consisting of a walled courtyard, gate block, and angled towers. More information.
  • Synone Castle – 16th-century large round tower castle that was once home to the Butler family.
  • Lisronagh Castle – 16th-century tower house built on the site of a previous one. It is another castle attributed to the Butler family of the time. More information .

Glen of Aherlow

One of the best places to visit in Tipperary is also one of the most beautiful. The Glen of Aherlow , nestled in a fertile valley between the Slievenamuck Hills and Galtee Mountains, is also a hidden gem in the county away from the major Tipperary attractions.

A picture of part of the Glen of Aherlow, Tipperary

The Glen of Aherlow was an important historic passage between Limerick and Tipperary and today there is a 25km drive through this very scenic western area of the county. The Irish name is Gleann Eatharlaí which means the land between elevations, quite fitting for its location.

The Glen has plenty to offer visitors including the opportunity to enjoy walking, cycling, riding, and fishing. There are lots of marked walking trails and there are lots of little villages dotted around the Glen where visitors can stop for refreshments.

There is a nature park in the Glen situated beside the Statue of Christ the King, erected in 1950. The statue overlooks the valley at its most scenic viewpoint. There are also historical sites in the Glen including St Pecaun’s Holy Well and St Sedna’s Well in Clonbeg Churchyard. More Abbey (mentioned below) is also located on the edge of the Glen of Aherlow near Galbally.

If you want to combine nature activities outdoors with some early Christian sites, then head to the Glen of Aherlow, one of the top places to go in Tipperary.

Mitchelstown Caves

Also known as New Cave, Mitchelstown Caves are a set of limestone caves near Burncourt in County Tipperary and are among the top things to see in Tipperary.

santa visits tipperary

The caves were discovered in 1833 and are a privately owned and run tourist attraction, with several caves open to the public for guided tours. The caves lie along the border of Tipperary with Cork and their name is deceptive as they are not located at Mitchelstown in County Cork .

The caves are one of the largest and most complex cave systems in Ireland, and on guided tours visitors follow ancient passageways and visit huge caverns where they are surrounded by stalactites, stalagmites, and other cave formations. One of Europe’s finest cave towers is located in the Mitchelstown Caves and is called the Tower of Babel, standing 9 metres in height. For something different, head underground in County Tipperary.

Swiss Cottage

Located just outside the historic town of Cahir, one of the most unusual places to see in Tipperary is the Swiss Cottage . Built in the early 19 th century, this ornamental cottage is another one of the most popular tourist attractions in Tipperary.

A picture of the Swiss Cottage, one of the best things to do in Tipperary, Ireland

It was built by a regency architect as a “fantasy” cottage for entertaining guests of the Lord and Lady Cahir. Despite years of neglect, the Swiss Cottage underwent restoration in the 1980s under the management of the Office of Public Works and soon rose in popularity among the Tipperary tourist attractions.

A visit to this historic museum house is easily combined with one to Cahir Castle due to their proximity to one another. Visitors can expect to see a wonderful spiral staircase and beautifully decorated rooms within. And the gardens, open all year round, are beautifully landscaped. It is a delight in the Tipperary countryside.

Abbeys and other historical religious sites

Along with the many castles in Tipperary, you will also find other historic sites to visit including many religious ones.

If you’ve been wondering what to see in Tipperary, Ireland, then you simply have to see Athassel Priory. The largest medieval priory in Ireland, Athassel Priory dates back to the late 12 th century and spans 4 acres. It was founded by Augustinians and the original buildings have been changed and renovated 300 years after its founding. During the Reformation, the priory was dissolved, and the lands were turned over to an influential Elizabethan courtier who left it to ruin. Visitors to explore the remaining cloisters, see intricately carved stones, and enjoy views of the Galtee Mountains (see further down). There is free access but limited parking.

An aerial picture of Athassel Priory, Tipperary

Moor Abbey is a Franciscan Abbey that was founded in the 13th century. Located on the banks of the River Aherlow, it is a national monument and was another abbey that fell during the Reformation of Ireland. More Abbey consists of a ruined church with a nave and chancel and visitors can find information about its history on a display board. This is another free thing to do in Tipperary with a small car park.

Located in the town of the same name, another historic place to visit in Tipperary is the location of the Ahenny High Crosses . Found at the monastic site of Kilclispeen, these are believed to be among the earliest crosses and date from the 8 th or 9 th century. There are two High Crosses that are part of the Ossory group and are great examples of High Crosses synonymous with Celtic symbols and crosses.

A picture of one of the Ahenny High Crosses in County Tipperary

Located near Clonmel you will find St Patric k’s Well, one of the largest wells in Ireland and a place of pilgrimage. It features an early-Christian, Celtic-style cross and is a picturesque site popular with tourists and pilgrims alike. There is also a small 17th-century church (pictured) that houses the altar tombs of the White family.

A picture of the ruined church at St Patrick's Well in County Tipperary

Hore Abbey (pictured below)is a ruined Cistercian monastery near the Rock of Cashel. Also known as Hoare Abbey or St Mary’s, it was established in the late 13th century and visitors can still see the church and sections of the east range, although there would also have been living quarters, a tower, and more. It is in a ruinous state but worth visiting if you are at the nearby Rock of Cashel.

A picture of the ruins of Hore Abbey, Tipperary with green grass in the foreground and blue skies overhead

Lough Derg is the third largest lake in Ireland, and this means it lends itself to plenty of activities, both on the water and off. It is a freshwater lake in the Shannon River Basin and has shores in counties Clare and Galway as well as Tipperary.

A picture of Lough Derg, Tipperary

There are lots of activities to do at Lough Derg including simple things like enjoying a sunset across the lake. The Lough Derg Blueway includes 160km of shoreline trails for all abilities and fitness levels. Several walking routes pass along its shore including the Lough Derg Way, and you can also enjoy cycling along and around its shores.

On the water, you can kayak, do some stand-up paddleboarding, enjoy the lake by guided boat tours, and even have watery fun at one of Ireland’s best aquaparks , Lough Derg Aqua Splash. It’s a great outdoor place to visit in Tipperary.

Galtee and Knockmealdown Mountains

If you love getting out and about in nature, then the mountains of Tipperary are where you should go. One of the best things to do in Tipperary is to enjoy walks in the hills. And there are two sets of mountains that have everything you need.

A picture of the Galtee Mountains, Tipperary in the background and woodland and fields in the foreground

The Galtee Mountains (picture above) span for 30km along the border of Tipperary and County Limerick , with Galtymore being the highest peak in the range. There are lots of trails in the mountains for walking and hiking for various fitness levels, whether you want a strenuous hike or a leisurely stroll taking in the scenery.

Meanwhile, along the border between Tipperary and Waterford, you’ll find the Knockmealdown Mountains. This mountain range contains the Vee Gap, a scenic road running from Cahir to Lismore in Waterford. Visitors can walk this and other trails throughout the mountains including part of St Declan’s Way , a pilgrimage route from Cashel to Ardmore in County Waterford . It is believed to be the route St Declan took to meet St Patrick in the 5 th century. Part of it passes through the beautiful Knockmealdown Mountains.

Other walks to enjoy in the hills of Tipperary include taking on the 5km trail on Devil’s Bit Mountain, named because of the appearance of a bite from the mountain. This looped trail affords visitors showcase views of the Galtee Mountains while enjoying forestry tracks, hillside paths, and more. This trail which takes approximately 90 minutes starts near the town of Templemore.

Cultural and Heritage Centres

Some of the best places to visit in County Tipperary are the cultural and heritage centres.

Cashel Heritage Centre is located in the town hall beside the tourist office and has displays about the town including a scale model of Cashel from the mid-17 th century. See more information here .

The South Tipperary County Museum , located in Clonmel, is another opportunity for visitors to discover more about the county and its history, through displays and exhibitions of artefacts from military, religious, cultural, archaeology, sports and other collections.

The Nenagh Heritage Centre , in the town of the same name, is located in two Georgian stone buildings with displays and information about the history of the town, along with genealogy services. With no entry fee and tours available, this is one of the great free things to do in Tipperary.

The Brú Ború Cu ltural Centre at the foot of the Rock of Cashel offers visitors a unique Irish cultural experience through education, exhibitions, performances, and more. Discover céilí music, dance, and theatre performances at this centre and combine them with your visit to the Rock of Cashel. Visitors can also enjoy the main attraction, the Sounds of History exhibition which takes a historical journey through Irish music.

Cashel Folk Village

Cashel Folk Village is a history museum in the town of the same name. It contains a large collection of memorabilia relating to many parts of Irish history and that of the town. Visitors can take an educational journey through history and glimpse into the past at times such as the Great Famine, the Easter Rising, the Penal Laws, and more.

A picture of one of the buildings of the Cashel Folk Village

One of the most complete medieval walled towns in Ireland is Fethard, a short 16km (10 miles) drive from Cashel. This medieval town’s walls were erected in the 13 th century to protect the town and its citizens during the Norman Invasion of Ireland.

Over 90% of the original stone walls (1.125m high) are surviving. Along with the walls, there were five towers, two of which survived, and five gates of which only one still stands.

A medieval festival is held in Fethard during National Heritage Week, and there are several other things to see in the town including a 13th-century church and graveyard, two tower houses, a ruined Abbey, and a town hall dating from the 17 th century. Find more information about the town here .

The Rock of Cashel is one of Ireland’s most iconic locations, and the medieval ecclesiastical buildings dominate the landscape on this limestone outcrop in the Golden Vale. The 13th century Gothic Cathedral, built between 1230 and 1270, is the most captivating of all. Immerse yourself in the story of the Rock with the audiovisual show and exhibitions in the Hall of Vicars.

Rock of Cashel

Designed to be a prime defensive location, Cahir Castle is an imposing structure that seems to grow out from the rock on which it stands. Put yourself at the centre of centuries of sieges and bombardments as you explore the castle which was captured three times in its history. In 1961, the last Lord of Cahir died and it was handed over to the State. It still retains its impressive keep, tower and much of its original defensive structure.

Experience the wilderness at the Glen of Aherlow on one of eight looped walks. The Galtee Mountains have long been known as a walker’s paradise, and there are walks to suit all fitness levels. Five of the looped walks begin at Christ the King Trail Head, and three from Lisvarrinane Village Trail Head, each one taking you across forest tracks, open moorland and alongside corries lakes and mountainsides.

If you’re looking for something more relaxed, visit the Glen of Aherlow Nature Park which is perfect for families or a peaceful woodland ramble. View the plants, flowers and the natural habitat of the animals that make up this wonderful ecosystem.

An affiliate of Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann, Brú Ború Cultural Centre is the perfect place to catch impressive theatre performances, a local comic or most often, beautiful traditional music. In the centre’s subterranean chambers, seven metres underground you’ll find the ‘Sounds of History’ exhibition which echoes Ireland’s past through a magical journey touching on our rich Irish culture.

A delightful ornamental cottage that was built in the early 1800s by Richard Butler, first Earl of Glengall, Swiss Cottage is a distinctive building with a thatched roof and was inspired by nature. Take a guided tour and see inside this charming structure which has a graceful spiral staircase, a parquet floor and rooms decorated with Parisian wallpapers.

Legend has it that the devil took a bite out of the mountain and broke off a tooth while doing so, and thus the Rock of Cashel came to be. The summit of Devil’s Bit Mountain stands at 478m and you can enjoy views of eight surrounding counties from the top. Adventure through forests and along hillside paths on this 5km looped walk before making your way to the summit for the most breathtaking views.

Known as the best example of an Elizabethan manor house in Ireland, Ormond Castle was built by the 10th Earl of Ormond in the 1560s. An architectural marvel, explore the two 15th century towers and country’s only unfortified castle still surviving since that period. Within its walls, you’ll find incredible decorative plasterwork and a magnificent long gallery to explore.

Get interactive at the Fethard Horse Country Experience , which examines the links between the Irish people, the land, and their horses. Spread across two floors of a 17th century Tholsel building, the audiovisual exhibitions bring the social history, local stories and thoroughbred racing to life. The first country market in Ireland took place here in 1957 and continues every Friday where you can pick up some local produce.

For a special treat, try Dooks Fine Foods ’ seasonal menu of Irish cuisine using locally-sourced produce only – their five course menu is something special.

19 Things To Do In Tipperary That’ll Immerse You In History, Nature, Music, And Pints

There’s an absolute mountain of things to do in Tipperary, regardless of what kind of explorer you are.

From castles and caves to ancient wells and forest walks (and food and drink, of course!), this vibrant county boasts the kind of magic that keeps visitors coming back for more time and time again.

If you lend me your eyes for a couple of minutes, you’ll see why.

What you’ll get from the guide below

  • LOADS of things to do in Tipperary
  • Advice on where to grab a hearty bite to eat
  • Recommendations on where to enjoy a post-adventure pint

Table of Contents

The best things to do in Tipperary

The places in the list below are in no particular order.

It’s numbered as I’ve borderline OCD and having guides in a list-like format makes me happy.

Ready to rock*?! Let’s get cracking!

*Pun absolutely intended…

1 – Visit the Rock of Cashel and find out what all of the fuss is about

The rock of cashel

Tourists go mad for the Rock of Cashel .

And it’s not exactly hard to see why. The place looks like something whipped straight from the mind of Walt Disney.

The fairytale-like Rock of Cashel dates back to the 5th Century and the inauguration of Aenghus King of Munster by St. Patrick himself.

St. Patrick travelled to Cashel to transform the Munster kingship from one of paganism to one of Christianity.

Rising around 200 feet above the surrounding plain, the Rock of Cashel stands impressively atop of a rocky outcrop.

Once known as St. Patrick’s Rock, it’s now one of Ireland’s most visited historical landmarks.

2 – Nurse a pint in a pub that doubles up as an undertakers

McCarthy’s Pub in Fethard is one of thousands of pubs that you’ll encounter as you explore Ireland.

This place comes with a bit of a twist, however – it’s a pub that doubles up as an undertakers.

The pub, which was established by Richard McCarthy in the 1850s, boasts that they’ll ‘ Wine you, diner you, and bury you’ .

Nip in here for a pint/tea/coffee and a bite to eat.

3 – Visit the mighty Cahir Castle

Cahir Castle Tipperary

Situated on an island in the middle of the River Suir, the 800-year old Cahir Castle looks like it has emerged right out from the rock on which it stands.

Once the stronghold of the Butler family, the castle has managed to retain its impressive keep, tower and the majority of its original defensive structure, making it one of Ireland’s largest and best-preserved castles.

4 – Then check out the nearby hobbit-like Swiss Cottage

swiss cottage tipperary

Built in the early 1800s by Richard Butler, the Swiss Cottage in Tipperary was originally part of Lord and Lady Cahir’s estate and was used to entertain guests.

While the cottage was restored in 1985, its unusual and rustic features remain intact.

A visit to the Swiss Cottage is perfectly paired with a trip to Cahir Castle.

You can stroll along the riverside to the Swiss Cottage from the castle in about 45 minutes.

5 – Chill with food and trad tunes in Kennedy’s

kennedys bar tipperary

Via Kennedy’s on FB

OK. So, we rarely get snow as heavy as is seen in the above photo, but the pub looks Christmassy and cosy… so I lashed it in.

Located in the picturesque village of Puckane, Kennedy’s is a stones throw from the shores of Lough Derg.

Visitors during the summer will be treated to traditional live music (more info on shows here ).

Visitors during the winter can enjoy cosy pints beside a roaring fire.

6 – Walk the magnificent Lough Derg Way

the lough derg way

The Lough Derg way will suit those of you looking to explore Tipperary (and Limerick) by foot.

This walk kicks off in Limerick City and ends in Dromineer in Tipperary.

Over the course of the walk, you’ll be treated to some of the finest scenery that Lough Derg has to offer.

In the video above, the folks at Tough Soles (one of my favourite Irish blogs!) walk the Lough Derg Way over the course of 3 days. Have a watch above.

7 – Have a nosey around the underground passages in Mitchelstown Cave

mitchelstown cave tipperary

Photo via Mitchelstown Cave

You can’t bate a visit to a cave.

The vast system of underground passageways and complex cave formations found at Michelstown Cave has been attracting visitors since its accidental discovery back in 1833.

Those that take the guided tour will follow ancient passageways and visit massive caverns with dripstone formations, stalactites, stalagmites, and huge calcite pillars.

8 – Listen to the sounds of history in the chambers beneath the Rock of Cashel

This sounds deadly ( Irish slang for great!)

Sounds of History is an imaginative experience that takes place in the Brú Ború Cultural Centre… in the subterranean chambers that lie seven metres underground at the base of the Rock of Cashel.

The Sounds of History exhibition takes you on a journey through Ireland’s rich culture & history.

The exhibition details everything from musical instruments that have been used for hundreds of years to the history of traditional Irish music, song and dance.

9 – Grab a big aul feed in Mikey Ryan’s (and learn about its colourful past)

mikey ryans cashel

Photo via Mikey Ryan’s

Mikey Ryan’s is a handy stroll from the Rock of Cashel.

Set back from the road, Mikey’s overlooks the Plaza and comes with a colourful history.

According to Legend, the original hops plant used to make Guinness came from the garden here.

A serious claim to fame, if the legend is in fact true.

Many of the buildings original 19th-Century features are still intact and can be gawked at while you enjoy a bite to eat.

10 – Go rambling in the Galtee Mountains

galty mountains

Activewear and packed lunches at the ready!

Some of the best inland hiking routes in Ireland await adventurers in search of active things to do in Tipperary.

The Galtees are Ireland’s highest inland mountain range, with a range of peaks for climbers to choose from including Galtymore, which stands at an impressive 3,018 feet.

There are a number of different hikes you can head off on here if you’re a seasoned hiker looking for a challenge. There are also several different shorter walks in the area.

11 – Opt for accommodation with a difference and glamp by Lough Derg

lough derg glamping

You’ll find plenty of places to camp right the way across Tipperary but if you fancy sleeping outdoors in style, then glamping by Lough Derg is a must.

You’ll find the cosy little tipi above in the town of Dromineer, surrounded by nature and on the doorstep of Lough Derg.

There’s a seating area and BBQ next to the tipi, so if you get the weather, you can cook up a storm and kick-back outside with burgers and beers for the evening.

12 – Learn about olden day Ireland at Cashel Folk Village

Right, so I couldn’t find one decent photo online of Cashel Folk Village .

That usually sets alarm bells ringing for me, but there are enough great reviews online to prove that this place must be worth a visit.

Cashel Folk Village is an extension of the Rock of Cashel attractions.

Here, you can have a ramble around and take a look at memorabilia from Irish life, transitioning throughout Irish history all the way to the present-day.

The folk village also contains a Famine memorial, an Easter Rising Museum and a Garden of Remembrance.

13 – Give your head a break at St. Patrick’s Well

st patrick's well clonmel

Photo by Nicola Barnett (via Creative Commons)

You’ll find this well nestled in a sheltered valley in Clonmel.

This peaceful and well-maintained spot (pun not intended) is the perfect place to escape the world for a while.

It’s said that St. Patrick and St. Declan first met at Saint Patrick’s Well over 1,600 years ago.

The story goes that St. Patrick was looking to confront the pagan King of the Déise (County Waterford).

St. Declan was afraid that St. Patrick might curse his people during the confrontation. The two holy men met and resolved their differences and the site was given to St. Patrick to mark the new friendship.

14 – Spend an evening by the lake in Larkin’s Pub

larkins pub tipperary

Photo via Larkin’s on FB

You’ll find this picturesque little pub on the banks of Lough Derg.

At over 300 years old, Larkin’s Bar and Restaurant has been in the game of shelling out great food (and an even greater drop, by all accounts!) for quite some time.

Visitors to Larkin’s can kick-back to trad sessions that take place each week, with music performed by a wide variety of gifted musicians.

15 – Explore the medieval town of Fethard

fethard town walls

Photo via Tipperary Tourism

An afternoon spent in the gorgeous little town of Fethard is one of my favourite things to do in Tipperary.

I’ve visited Fethard several times over the years, and it always amazes me how few tourists you tend to encounter.

Fethard is one of the best examples of a medieval walled town in Ireland.

Dating back to 1292, the walls are still, for the most part, completely intact and are best explored on foot.

16 – Uncover the tale behind the ruins of Loughmoe Castle

You only need to take a quick glance at the ruins of Loughmoe Castle to know that there’s an interesting tale behind it.

Loughmoe Castle is incorrectly referred to as ‘ Loughmore ‘ (which means ‘The Big Lake’ ). The correct Irish translation of the area is ‘Luach Mhagh’ , which means ‘the field of the reward’ .

The name alludes to the way in which the family that first gained ownership of the area did so.

Many years ago, when Loughmoe Castle was inhabited by a king, the densely wooded land that surrounds it was terrorised by a gigantic boar and sow that uprooted crops and killed whoever crossed their paths.

In an attempt to rid the land of the beasts, the king offered their slayer the hand of his daughter, the big aul castle, and the lands around it.

Many hunters tired and failed.

That was, however, until a young lad called Purcell climbed through the nearby forest via the branches of trees to stalk the animals from above. He perched himself above the animals and used his bow to get the deed done and claim his prize.

17 – Go hopping about the lake with Lough Derg Aqua Splash

acqua splash lough derg

Photo via Lough Derg Acqua Splash on FB

This is a nice unique take on a water park.

Lough Derg Aqua Splash is, unsurprisingly, based on the shores of Lough Derg.

You can try your hand at kayaking, SUP boarding, Banana-boating and go flying down bouncy slides into the icy water below.

Just make sure you have a fat flask of tea waiting for you when you get out.

18 – Ormond Castle

ormond castle tipperary

Ormond Castle via Failte Ireland

Ormond Castle is the final castle on the list (we’ll let you decide which is the most worthy of the throne).

It’s said that this 14th-century stronghold in Carrick-on-Suir is the finest example of an Elizabethan manor house in Ireland.

Daily tours of the grounds provide colourful insight into its evolution, destruction, and restoration into the beautiful castle it is today.

19 – Explore the Knockmealdown Mountains

Bordering counties Tipperary and Waterford, the Knockmealdown Mountains are a great place to spend a Sunday afternoon.

There are several trails on offer here of varying difficulty, peaking at Knockmealdown itself and the famous Sugarloaf mountain.

Hit play above on the video shot by John McMahon . It shows the Vee Pass in the Knockmealdown Mountains covered in Rhododendrons.

20 – The Glen of Aherlow

views of Glen of Aherlow tipperary

Photo by Brian Morrison via Tourism Ireland

The magnificent Glen of Aherlow is a lush valley that was once an important route between counties Tipperary and Limerick.

It’s in this valley that the River Aherlow runs between the towering Galtee and Slievenamuch Mountains.

The Glen of Aherlow is home to an ample number of low-level looped rambles and more strenuous mountain treks, where walkers will stroll alongside mountains, rivers, lakes, forests and seemingly endless scenic landscape.

Just a nugget on cashel for you. You mentioned above Mikey Ryan’s and the Rock and the likes. Interesting fact but Guinness was actually invented in Cashel -next door to Mikey Ryan’s in the palace. The yard man in the palace was a fella by the name of Richard Guinis. He worked for archbishop Price who lived there. Price fancied himself as a brewer and brewed beer down in the cellar. He had hops planted out the back to do this. Anyway Guinis made a hames of it one day by roasting the hops instead of the barely and ended up with this dark beer. I think they referred to it as the wine of Ireland. Anyway, Price and Guinis took out a patent on it and Price called it Guinness as it’s known today in Guinis’s honour. Guinis went on to have a son by the name of Arthur who as you know went on to lease out James’ Gate.

Cheers for taking the time to post this, Shane! I'd never heard of this story before.

A serious nugget of info! Gent!

Just planning a trip around Ireland for an American friend who is coming to visit soon and I cant express how much this website has helped me as I forget the small and beautiful querks this country has to offer. As a Tipp man there are two gems also available in the Premier County that are not on this list: 1. The Glen of Aherlow which can be seen in all its glory from a beautiful viewpoint known as Christ the King of all the Glen stretching from Galbally in Limerick to Cahir in South Tipperary. The viewpoint also boasts one of the best views of the Galtee Mountains. 2. Jim O' The Mills Bar in Upperchurch, North Tipperary is one of the most Irish bars I have ever been to. It opens only one night a week (Thursdays) to the crowds of people who flock to the bar for the weekly trad sessions that go on until all hours of the morning. With only one operational tap, Guinness of course, and a limited selection of other drinks and beverages, people rather come for the friendly atmosphere that Jim and the rest of his family create weekly as he opens his house to the public. Whether you are a perfomer, a singer, or an observer this pub has a place for you.

Sorry Damien - I thought that I had replied to this - my bad!

Thanks for the kind words - glad that you've found it useful!

I can't believe I left out the Glen of Aherlow... I'll pop that onto the ever-growing to-do list! Cheers!

Jim O' The Mills - what a name! I've just Googled it. It looks mighty. I'll pop that on, also.

Thanks for the shout, Damien!
