Give Students letters to take home outlining all the most important details, and informing them of an information evening.

If possible add the trip to your school’s website and social media pages.

Contact through a school emailing list. 

Contact the parent-teacher associations and get the wider school community involved.

The aim of this evening is to inform parents of the travel arrangements, itinerary and outline the key educational activities of the trip. You will have the opportunity to address any concerns parents may have, explain who you will be travelling with and communicate interesting trip facts! It can be beneficial to have a representative from your school travel provider there to answer any more detailed questions. A parents evening is also your opportunity as trip leader to show the parents that you are responsible and passionate about their children's education. Using a powerpoint presentation is a great way to convey all the required information while keeping your presentation on track. Hosting a Q&A at the end of the evening is crucial in developing a relationship. Enthusiastic parents can become incredible advocates for your trip. If you have a few very keen parents it can make a world of difference in getting it off the ground!

Continue the conversation 

Create a social media page on facebook or twitter. This is a great way to show parents that their kids are safe and having a great time! Taking videos during and after activities is a great way to reinforce educational learning. Sending your child abroad can seem like a daunting idea. A social media page helps reassure parents that they will be able to keep up to date with what’s happening on the trip!

Confirm Booking/Funding 

Ensure there is a clear process and deadline for accepting deposits, and payments. If you plan to fundraise part of the trip, create a calendar (or download our sample calendar) include key payment dates and fundraising activities.Communicate exactly what the fundraising target is and what the remaining payable balance will be. We send payment reminders to our clients ahead of time with useful resources to make collecting payments as easy as possible. 

Useful Tips 

• Ask students or teachers who have travelled before to talk about the trip.
• Show a slideshow of pictures and videos from previous school trips.
• Get your colleagues on board early to help advocate your trip. The more staff members you have talking about the trip, the larger your potential audience will be.

• Trip cost can sometimes be a barrier to entry. To mitigate this, pre-plan fundraising activities and make an estimate of fundraising targets.

• Parents are required to check all luggage before bringing it to school to ensure the proper type of clothing, toiletry, and snacks have been packed. We are relying upon parents to supervise the packing process to ensure students do not bring items that may violate the school’s code of conduct or dress code.
• Luggage should have identification tags and be clearly marked.
• Students will be expected to carry their own luggage to the bus and to their rooms at the hotel.
• Suitcases will be stowed beneath the bus; therefore, STUDENTS WILL NOT HAVE ACCESS TO THEM. Anything needed during the day should be packed in the carry-on.
• Glass bottles and items containing dairy are not permitted on motor coach buses.
• Spending Money –  Parent discretion is advised. Money is only needed for souvenirs and meals listed as “on own” on the itinerary. The average spending money ranges from <INSERT MONEY AMOUNT HERE> to <INSERT MONEY AMOUNT HERE>.

• Cell phones are acceptable for use on a limited basis. Students may bring cell phones but they are not to be on or used during touring and travel. Cell phones should be turned off and put away whenever a tour guide is talking or when touring various sites.
• Students may use cell phones to call home to check in during “down” times throughout the trip (mealtime, hotel time, etc.).

Licking Heights High School students spend spring break abroad

Licking Heights teachers pride themselves on providing students with innovative and fulfilling learning experiences in the classroom and beyond, but for several high school teachers, this method even includes going international.

For spring break, teachers MaryJo Jones and Bethany Good — in partnership with EF Tours, an educational trip provider for middle and high schools — took their students on a week-long trip outside the United States. Art teacher Jones led students through a tour of France and Spain, while science teacher Good and students explored Belize in Central America.

Jones’ trip focused primarily on the Pyrenees Mountains between France and Spain and how the natural border blends the two countries’ cultures in architecture, art, food and more. Students visited the plazas and cathedrals of cities like Paris, Barcelona, Biarritz, San Sebastian and Pamplona.

Jones described her life-changing trip as the highlight of her career and one of the greatest experiences of her life. She commended her students for their willingness to push themselves as they experienced different cultures and for maintaining a growth mindset so they could learn from each moment spent abroad.

"It was a dream come true and we were in a fairy tale for 10 days. I knew the trip was going to be an amazing learning experience for us all, but the impact it had on all of us, every time we got off the bus every day, we stood shocked in amazement," she said "The smiles never stopped, even when climbing mountains, and the students lived their lives to the fullest."

For Good, her students’ trek through Central America’s "eco-frontier" included plenty of visits to ancient ruins, lush jungles, and the sparkling Caribbean coastline. Students spent time exploring nature and biodiversity and taking guided tours of Mayan ruins with local guides.

Good said she enjoyed watching her students get out of their comfort zone as they experienced leaving the country for the first time.

"I was so grateful to have the opportunity to lead a group of students to Belize for spring break. It was great to watch them zipline, snorkel and cave tube for the first time," she said. "The best thing that happened on the trip was getting to see the students develop new friendships with students from other schools around the United States who were also on the tour with us."

Engineering students gain real-world knowledge for future success during Italy trip

More than 20 Vanderbilt engineering students recently visited Italy during their spring break to not only see some iconic structures, but also learn the engineering behind the Pantheon and Venice’s sophisticated floodgates so they could apply that knowledge to future engineering projects of their own.

The trip was part of an inaugural class taught this semester in the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department and sought to give the 22 students a deeper understanding of the engineering behind some of Italy’s structures, such as the ancient Pantheon and MOSE project designed to protect the city of Venice from flooding. The MOSE project is an integrated system consisting of rows of mobile gates that uses air pressure to keep water levels in check.

As part of their class assignments, the students worked in groups to design floodgates as well as build and test concrete dome prototypes based on their studies of how the Pantheon was constructed. The class was originally scheduled for 15 students, but instructors increased the number because of interest.

“We wanted to help students understand the history and the beauty of structural engineering with the hope that they will be able to better work with architects to achieve beautiful and structurally sound buildings in their careers,” said Lori Troxel, professor of the practice of civil and environmental engineering and a class instructor.

While in Italy, the students traveled to Rome, Venice, and Milan. In Milan, they spent time with architects who had worked with the renowned architect Zaha Hadid, and met with a group of students from Polytechnic University of Milan who were taking a class on structural health monitoring. In Venice, they talked to engineers involved with the city’s unique flood gates. And in Rome, the students visited ancient sites like the Pantheon, the Coliseum, and the Roman Forum.

Winnie Huang, a junior majoring in civil engineering, marveled at the construction of the Pantheon.

“Seeing the Pantheon in person made clear why its design has allowed for it to last thousands of years,” said Huang. “Despite the cracking as a result of the hoop stresses of the dome, the Pantheon has notably stayed structurally sound due to its construction with Roman concrete, which contains self-healing properties. Although we didn’t personally have the opportunity to work with Roman concrete for our project, we took inspiration from the Pantheon in designing our own miniature concrete dome.”

For Santino Clemente, whose grandparents are Italian immigrants, the trip was his third time in Italy and one he had looked forward to because after each visit he found himself wanting to go back. Before the latest trip, he watched a documentary about the MOSE project.

“Being there in person and getting to ask all our questions to the engineers was an awesome experience,” said Clemente, a junior majoring in mechanical engineering.

After returning from Italy, the students tested floodgates they had constructed in a creek at a park near the university. In constructing the floodgates, they had a budget of $50 and could use whatever scrap materials they found.

Philmon Gashaw, also a junior mechanical engineering major, said his group used a magnet, wood, and acrylic to design their floodgate. “We put it in the creek and saw how well we could stop the water,” said Gashaw. “It worked surprisingly better than I thought.”

Many of the students applied what they learned about the MOSE project to the construction of their floodgates. For Clemente and his team, he said it was the angle for the wall of their floodgate.

“We learned that the MOSE gates are lifted up to a 42-degree angle to prevent a straight-on impact from the tide, which would result in a much higher force,” he said. “Therefore, even though the top of our gate was fully vertical, we added a ramp at the bottom that guided the water upward. This prevented the water from pushing our floodgate on first impact.”

Ghina Absi, assistant professor of the practice of civil and environmental engineering and a class instructor, said she enjoyed seeing the students’ engagement and excitement as they worked on the projects, and hopes what they learned will benefit them down the road.

“Even when they’re trying to solve a tiny problem of stopping a flow in a tiny channel next to campus, they will be able to take all the lessons they’ve learned and apply them to the big project I know they are capable of doing in the future,” said Absi.

Last year during spring break, Troxel led a group of engineering professors and students to Israel as part of a different program to learn about the country’s water recycling programs and bring those lessons back to share with Sterling Ranch, a 21st century sustainable city south of Denver, Colorado, that has doubled as a training site and test bed for Vanderbilt students and professors since 2015.

Trips to destinations like Italy and Israel also highlight experiential learning opportunities through an academic degree requirement called Immersion Vanderbilt , which provided funds to reduce student costs for the trip to Italy.

“There’s no better way for students to learn than to provide them with real-world experience,” said Cynthia Paschal, senior associate dean for undergraduate education. “Study abroad initiatives like these are examples of the ways Vanderbilt is assuring our students are prepared to compete on a global stage.”

The Italy trip was made possible by generous financial support from FINFROCK, a leader in design-build construction in Central Florida. The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering provided a staffer to help with organization and on-site logistics, and the School of Engineering provided support to ensure that all students could participate, regardless of their financial circumstances.

200 Broward students head to Tallahassee in annual trip where they tour key places, meet legislators

PEMBROKE PINES, FLA. (WSVN) - A group of middle school English learner students are on their way to greatness with a trip to Tallahassee.

About 200 students from 14 different middle schools in Broward departed on Tuesday morning from Pembroke Pines on an annual 4-day trip for new Floridians to Tallahassee.

The trip is called ‘Rally to Tally’

Once the students arrive at the state capital, they’ll get to visit cultural museums, the State Capital, the State Senate, and Florida House of Representatives as well as the Florida Supreme Court.

Before boarding the bus, students reacted to their upcoming trip.

“This is a great opportunity because I can know new places, so this is going to be very exciting and interesting,” said Eduardo Bourg.

The students will also get to meet several state legislators and judges during their trip. They will also hold a mock election and be able to debate about current issues and policies.

Biden is canceling $7.4 billion in student debt for 277,000 borrowers. Here's who is eligible.

The Biden administration on Friday said it's canceling $7.4 billion in student debt for 277,000 borrowers, with the recipients scheduled to receive emails today to alert them to their loan discharges. 

The latest effort extends the debt relief provider under President Joe Biden after the Supreme Court last year blocked  his administration's plan for broad-based student loan forgiveness. With the latest batch of loan cancellations, the White House said it has forgiven about $153 billion in debt for 4.3 million student borrowers. 

Biden, who had made student loan relief a major campaign pledge, is tackling an issue that affects about 43 million Americans with a combined  $1.7 trillion in student debt. It's a burden that some borrowers and their advocates say has harmed their ability to save for a home or achieve financial milestones, an issue that was echoed by Education Secretary Miguel Cardona in a conference call with reporters. 

"I talked to a teacher in New York this week who took out a loan for $30,000," Cardona said Friday, "and after over a decade of paying and being a teacher the debt was $60,000, and she was saying that the interest was so high that the payments that she was making wasn't even touching her principal."

He added, "We are fixing a broken system. We're relentless and taking steps to transform a broken system into one that works people across the country."

Here's what to know about who is eligible for the latest round of forgiveness.

Who qualifies for the student loan forgiveness?

Three groups of people qualify under the latest round of debt relief, the White House said. 

• $3.6 billion for 206,800 borrowers enrolled in the SAVE plan.

About $3.6 billion will be forgiven for nearly 207,000 borrowers enrolled in the Saving on a Valuable Education (SAVE) plan, an income-driven repayment program, or IDR, that the Biden administration created last year. 

The White House said borrowers who are getting their debt discharged under SAVE had taken out smaller loans for their college studies. The plan allows people to receive forgiveness after they made at least 10 years of payments if they originally took out $12,000 or less in loans to pay for college; borrowers with larger loans are eligible after 20 or 25 years of repayment, depending on what types of loans they have. 

 "You sacrifice and you've saved for a decade or more to make your student loan payments, and you originally borrowed $12,000 or less, you're going to see relief," Cardona told reporters. "An overwhelming number of those who qualify for SAVE were eligible for Pell grants and come from low- and middle-income communities."

• $3.5 billion for 65,700 borrowers in income-repayment plans.

These borrowers will receive forgiveness through "administrative adjustments" to repayment plans where loan servicers had made it tougher for some borrowers to qualify for relief.  

"These are people who paid for a long time but were being deprived of relief because of administrative and servicing failures," Cardona said. "These people met the contract of their loan" and will receive forgiveness.

• $300 million for 4,600 borrowers through Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF).  

The PSLF program is designed to help public servants like teachers and government employees achieve debt forgiveness after 10 years of repayment. It's a program that started in 2007 but had been plagued with complex rules that effectively hampered people from getting their debt discharged, with only 7,000 receiving loan forgiveness prior to the Biden administration. 

With the latest round of discharges, the Biden administration has forgiven $62.8 billion in loans for 876,000 borrowers through PSLF. 

Are there legal challenges to Biden's debt forgiveness plans?

In two separate lawsuits, Republican attorneys general in 18 states are pushing to have the SAVE plan tossed and to halt any further student debt cancellation. They say the SAVE plan oversteps Biden's authority and makes it harder for states to recruit employees. They also contend the plan undermines a separate cancellation program that encourages careers in public service.

It's unclear what the suits could mean for loans that have already been canceled. A court document filed by Kansas' attorney general says it's "unrealistic to think that any loan forgiveness that occurs during this litigation will ever be clawed back."

Music Teacher Is Charged With Taking Teenagers on Trips to Abuse Them

Paul Geer taught for decades at the Family Foundation School, a rural reform academy where he abused students, an indictment states.

The music teacher’s classes at the strict, no-nonsense reform school in the woods of upstate New York would seem to be a teenager’s respite amid all the rules, a place for expression and discovery.

But a criminal indictment unsealed Thursday portrayed that teacher as a domineering and abusive tyrant who, during one-on-one trips away from school and outside the state, raped his teenage students or forced them into sexual activity.

The indictment follows years of lawsuits that have portrayed the Family Foundation School , a small boarding academy in rural Delaware County, as something closer to an unsupervised, violent prison.

The teacher, Paul Geer, 56, was arrested Wednesday evening in Hancock, N.Y., where he lives a short distance from the site of the school, which closed in 2014. He was charged with six counts related to bringing three different children across state lines to engage in unlawful sexual activity.

Mr. Geer pleaded not guilty at an arraignment before a federal magistrate judge in Syracuse, N.Y., on Thursday, and was denied release pending a detention hearing set for Monday.

For former students at the school, his arrest vindicated many years of online campaigns and legal battles involving that place and, specifically, that man.

Liz Boysick, 41, identified as “Victim 2” in the indictment, was 16 when Mr. Geer drove her to Pennsylvania ahead of a class trip there and forced her to perform oral sex in his van, she said. Decades later, she was in court to see Mr. Geer in shackles during the hearing.

“It was really powerful hearing what mattered to me counts,” she said afterward. “He will not get one more tear out of me. Now is the time for me to live my life.”

Mr. Geer was in his 20s and living with his parents when an older couple approached him at a choral recital he was leading and offered him a job at the Family School, as it is known, on the spot. They were Tony and Betty Argiros, who founded the school in the 1980s.

For Mr. Geer, that began a career of more than 20 years at the school, which billed itself as a last resort for parents frustrated and distraught by their children’s drug or alcohol abuse or behavioral issues. Former students have said he asked personal questions about their sex lives and singled out children to stay behind with him after class, which was held in a red barn beside a pond.

The indictment described Mr. Geer as a bully who, in addition to subjecting students to “repeated sexual abuse,” forced them to eat moldy food, haul heavy loads of rocks around the campus and endure communication blackouts for long periods.

On three separate occasions outlined in the indictment, Mr. Geer drove students out of state on one-on-one trips and coerced them into sexual activity. The victims were two boys and a girl, ages 14 to 17.

Mike Milia, 45, of Brooklyn, is identified as “Victim 1” in the indictment. He was 14 in 1994 when Mr. Geer took him on a fishing trip to Maine and sexually abused him, according to the indictment.

On the way back to Hancock, Mr. Geer “told him not to tell anyone of what had just happened,” according to a lawsuit filed by Mr. Milia in 2019. That case is pending.

Mr. Geer was questioned about taking a minor to Maine in a deposition that same year.

“In hindsight, I shouldn’t have done that,” he said, but he denied any sexual abuse.

“I think I behaved badly in a lot of ways,” Mr. Geer said in the deposition, referring to his time working at the school. “I definitely was very aggressive.”

The couple that founded the school later retired, and their son, Emmanuel Argiros, who goes by Michael, took over day-to-day operations before it closed. In depositions in 2018 and 2021, the younger Mr. Argiros denied hearing reports of abuse while at the school.

In 2018, The New York Times published an article describing a series of suicides and fatal overdoses by former students. More former students later came forward to describe horrific conditions at the school.

Liz Ianelli is a former student who recounted her time at the school and described the abuses inflicted on her there in her 2023 book, “I See You, Survivor.” She recalled being wrapped from neck to ankle in a blanket that was duct-taped closed, and left on the floor of an empty room, shimmying toward a bowl of tuna for food.

She was among the former students who hastily arranged travel to Syracuse on Thursday for the court hearing.

Sitting nearby was Mr. Milia, watching the man who had taken him to Maine 30 years ago.

“This guy threatened my life when I was 14 years old,” Mr. Milia said after the hearing. “When he walked through that door, it was the first time I felt like he couldn’t hurt me anymore. I am not scared anymore.”

Today, before a packed auditorium at Moscow State University, Vice President Biden delivered a powerful speech to U.S. and Russian students and business leaders. Echoing messages conveyed during his earlier meetings with Russian President Dimitry Medvedev and Prime Minister Vladimir Putin over the course of his three-day visit, Vice President Biden hailed the successful “reset” of U.S.-Russian relations and reiterated his call for broader economic cooperation between the two countries.

Issuing the strongest support yet for Russia’s entry into the World Trade Organization, the Vice President said,“it’s better for Americans and better for Russians to be able to trade with each other under predictable and transparent rules.”

On the issue of human rights and the status of democracy and the rule of law in Russia – a topic discussed at length in meetings with Russian civil society and political opposition leaders earlier today, the Vice President said:  “History showsthat in industrialized societies, economic modernization and political modernization must go hand and hand.”

Yesterday, the Vice President and Dr. Biden visited the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in the Alexander Garden. As a military honor guard looked on, the Vice President observed a moment of silence in recognition of the Russian soldiers who died in World War II and ceremonially placed a wreath that read “To those who fell in the fight against fascism, from the American people.”

Later, the Vice President attended a signing ceremony for the sale of Boeing 777 jets to Aeroflot – which will support more than 10,000 jobs at home - in the impressive building of the Moscow School of Management at Skolkovo, an area that Moscow hopes to develop into the Russian equivalent of Silicon Valley. Afterwards, he and Russian Deputy Prime Minister Igor Shuvalov led a roundtable discussion with Russian and American business leaders. The Vice President added that beyond negotiations between our governments, the U.S. is also relying on the growing connections between Russian and American business leaders and leaders in civil society to build a comprehensive relationship between the U.S. and Russia.

James and Jennifer Crumbley, a school shooter's parents, are sentenced to 10-15 years

James and Jennifer Crumbley, whose son murdered four classmates and shot seven other people at Oxford High School in 2021, were each sentenced Tuesday in a Pontiac, Mich. courtroom to between 10 and 15 years in prison.

Both Crumbleys were found guilty in separate trials on four counts of involuntary manslaughter. Each of those charges carried a maximum penalty of 15 years, and the sentences are to be served concurrently.

In court, the Crumbleys looked visibly shaken, breathing heavily as they read from prepared statements prior to learning their fate.

James Crumbley spoke directly to the parents of the students his son had murdered. Several family members attended the sentencing.

"I am sorry for your loss as a result of what my son did," he said. "I cannot express how much I wish that I had known what was going on with him or what was going to happen. Because I absolutely would have done a lot of things differently."

In her statement, Jennifer Crumbley said she, her husband and her son, Ethan, were an average family.

"We weren't perfect but we loved our son and each other tremendously," Crumbley said. "This could be any parent up here in my shoes. Ethan could be your child, could be your grandchild, your niece, your nephew, your brother, your sister. Your child could make the fatal decision not just with a gun but a knife, a vehicle, intentionally or unintentionally."

The teenagers who lost their lives during the shooting rampage were Justin Shilling and Madisyn Baldwin, both 17, Tate Myre, 16, and 14-year-old Hana St. Juliana. Six other students and a teacher were injured.

When it was time for their families to speak, several members described how the murders still haunted them.

Nicole Beausoleil, whose daughter Madisyn Baldwin was shot at point blank range, told the Crumbleys buying their son a gun when he was already spiraling into despair made them just as responsible as the shooter.

"Not only did your son kill my daughter but you both did as well. The words 'involuntary' should not be a part of your offense. Everything you did that day, months prior and days after were voluntary acts (helping) your son to commit a murder. Not just one, but multiple," Beausoleil said.

A rare prosecution

The Crumbleys are believed to be the first parents of a mass school shooter to have been charged and convicted of such crimes. Many legal experts say it could set a precedent for charging parents with serious crimes because of actions taken by their child.

Their son, Ethan Crumbley, pleaded guilty to murder and previously was sentenced to life without parole for the school shooting he carried out when he was 15.

Prosecutors never claimed the parents knew about their son's plans to go on a killing spree at Michigan's Oxford High School. However, they argued the Crumbleys ignored signs their son was seriously troubled and bought him a powerful Sig Sauer 9mm handgun as an early Christmas present.

They never told counselors about the gun they gifted their child when they were called to a meeting at the school the day of the shooting, not even when they were shown drawings the teen made. The images featured a pistol resembling the Sig Sauer alongside a figure with bullet wounds and phrases like "blood everywhere" and "help me, the thoughts won't stop."

Instead, the Crumbleys left their son at school and returned to work. A few hours later, Ethan emerged from a school bathroom with the gun and began firing his first of 32 shots.

Prosecutors told the jury if the Crumbleys had taken a "tragically few steps," four Oxford students would likely still be alive.

They showed evidence that the murder weapon was never properly secured away from their troubled son.

In court, Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald used the murder weapon to demonstrate how to use a cable lock to keep the gun from being fired.

The process took about 10 seconds.

A 'chilling' lack of remorse

The prosecution had asked for the Crumbleys to serve 10 to 15 years in prison, citing what they called a "chilling lack of remorse" on the part of both parents after the shooting.

Prosecutors noted that Jennifer Crumbley testified during her trial that "I've asked myself if I would've done anything differently. And I wouldn't have."

And they pointed to repeated profanity-laced threats James Crumbley made against Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald on jailhouse phone calls he knew were being recorded, as well as in an electronic message.

'Mistakes any parent could make'

James Crumbley's attorney countered that his client had not physically threatened the prosecutor, he merely "vented" his anger over what he saw as an unjust incarceration.

The Crumbleys said they, too, were victims of their son, who they claimed had "manipulated" them into the purchase of a gun they had no idea he would use to kill.

They argued they made "mistakes any parent could make," given the information they had.

Defense attorneys for the couple noted an Oxford High counselor determined Ethan could remain in school the day of the shooting because he did not seem to pose a danger to himself or anyone else.

The couple maintained they thought their son was a normal teenager simply depressed over the loss of his grandmother, a pet dog and a friend who had moved away.

In a pre-sentencing interview with state officials, Jennifer Crumbley said that with the benefit of hindsight, "There are so many things I would change if I could go back in time."

Defense claims extra prison time unnecessary

The Crumbleys had asked to be sentenced to time served.

Defense attorneys argued the parents had already spent more than two and a half years in prison locked in a cell for 23 hours a day, and that further prison time was not necessary because the Crumbleys were not a threat to the public.

Defense attorney Shannon Smith also said more time would not deter others from committing a similar offense because "there is no person who would want the events of Nov. 30, 2021, to repeat themselves."

Smith added that, far from being the uncaring, remorseless mother prosecutors had portrayed to the public and the media, Jennifer Crumbley was focused on her son and distraught over the devastation her son caused.

In a sentencing memo, Jennifer Crumbley's parents and others pleaded with the court for leniency. A young woman, who said she was 18 when she became Crumbley's cellmate for a year and a half, also wrote to the judge.

She said Crumbley had greeted her with a basket of snacks and served as a mother figure to her.

The woman also wrote that inmates screamed threats at Crumbley, who tearfully told them she was sorry and "wished she could change everything her son had done."

Though Judge Cheryl Matthews sentenced the Crumbleys to the stiffest penalty possible, she said that the sentences were not designed to send a message to other parents or prosecutors that they should hold families responsible for children's crimes.

"These convictions are not about poor parenting. These convictions confirm repeated acts, or lack of acts, that could have halted an oncoming runaway train. About repeatedly ignoring things that would make a reasonable person feel the hair on the back of their neck stand up," Matthews said.

Moments after they were sentenced, the Crumbleys began filling out paperwork in the courtroom for an appeal.

Their son, Ethan, who pleaded guilty in October 2022 to murder and terrorism charges, is also likely to appeal his sentence of life without the possibility of parole.
