Review: Taylor Swift’s ‘The Eras Tour’ in Singapore – ‘Folklore’ and ‘Evermore’ needed more love

After nine years, Taylor Swift is performing at one of the biggest stages in Singapore in 2024. But there were minor snags that marred the first of six performances at the National Stadium. Here’s our concert review of Taylor Swift’s ‘The Eras Tour’ in Singapore.

“My mum (Andrea Swift) actually spent a lot of her childhood with her mum and dad and sister growing up in Singapore,” Taylor Swift shared this personal information nugget to the 60-thousand-strong crowd after performing marjorie , a song off her ninth studio album, evermore . Marjorie was written as a tribute to Swift’s late maternal grandmother, opera singer Marjorie Finlay. This relation reflected Swift’s impression of the city-state too.

Taylor Swift’s ‘The Eras Tour’ is undeniably the main concert event of 2024 in Singapore . As the Singapore leg is the only stop in Southeast Asia, many fans are coming from our neighbouring regions to town just for this gig.

Being one of the biggest living pop stars in the world currently, getting a ticket to see Swift perform wasn’t the easiest task. In fact, the process was even dubbed ‘The Great War’ by fans.

Taylor Swift TAS_1667

While I’m not an ardent Swiftie, her music discography got me through particular moments in my life. Heck, I’m just a year older than Swift, and hence, the relatability. Specifically the crush-coded You Belong With Me and ethereal Snow On The Beach (featuring Lana Del Rey) . Also, she has my respect for being a sharp songwriter and lyricist with her compositions. I knew I had to try my luck for a ticket to ‘The Eras Tour’ in Singapore. The concept and setlist are perfect to sum up her successful 18-year-long career.

A survival guide to Taylor Swift’s ‘The Eras Tour’ 2024 concerts in Singapore

I’ve watched the movie edit of ‘The Eras Tour’ and it’s safe to say there wasn’t a stark difference between the real and reel, save for a couple of region-specific banters (Singapore colloquialism) and, of course, the surprise acoustics segment (which we’ll get to later). After all, any attempts to alter and veer off what’s expected will send Swifties into frenzy mode.

Entry to the Singapore National Stadium was orderly. Most Swifties were dressed for the occasion, from the pastel colours of ‘Lover’ to sequinned outfits for ‘Midnights’ – whichever era resonated with them. The fan who wore a key lime green dog costume ( The Last Great American Dynasty ) definitely got my vote for Best Dressed.

Opening act Sabrina Carpenter impressed with her fresh musicality and wit, especially for the custom outro on nonsense she does for every concert supporting Swift. Night one in Singapore was “Gardens by the Bay, I wanna go there. / Then I’ll take you somewhere that has no hair, / Singapore, you’re so perfect that it’s not fair.”

Swift’s set promptly started moments after 7pm, after the iconic countdown timer reached zero. The robotic synth of Cruel Summer (a personal favourite) kicked off the ‘Lover’ era. Swift used the sleeper hit song to interact with the crowd for the first time in the evening by prompting them to sing along to the bridge. A thunderous response followed.

Review: Key highlights of Taylor Swift’s The Eras Tour Singapore concert

Taylor Swift TAS_1364

Overall, Swift’s delivery throughout the three-and-a-half hour-long concert was textbook perfect. She started a little clinical but quickly warmed up to Singapore from the ‘Fearless’ era. The acoustics proved to be flawed and caused a dent in this experience. Yes, National Stadium still isn’t an ideal concert venue to best appreciate music. It is, however, one of the only few venues that can allow a 55,000- 60,000 crowd.

*Note: Swift was more relaxed on night two, where she shared with fans that her hair “went back to factory reset-setting due to the humidity in Singapore.” If you’re wondering, her hair morphed from tamed to curly within the 3.5 hours.

It was also evident that eras before ‘Folklore’ and ‘Evermore’ were crowd favourites from the volume of the chants and sing-a-longs. Catchy and made for radio to be mega hits, those songs are certainly easier to digest. It was disappointing to hear the cheers dimmed and see a portion of the crowd in my zone getting restless during the ‘Folklore’ and ‘Evermore’ eras as both are Swift’s magnum opuses, music-wise. In Singapore, they are underrated.

To give benefit of the doubt, the casual fans here might be enjoying the slower-tempo songs in their own way, but scrolling through social media definitely wasn’t a polite way of doing so. As a consolation, I did spot a handful of Swifties mouthing enthusiastically to every word. One dude deserves to be #MVP for the night.

For me, I switched from casually singing to roaring on Champagne Problems (“She would’ve made such a lovely bride. / “What a shame she’s fucked in the head,” they said”) and The Last Great American Dynasty (“There goes the most shameless woman this town has ever seen. / She had a marvelous time ruinin’ everything”). Genius lyrics.

The brooding cinematic quality sets of ‘Folklore’ and ‘Evermore’ eras presented excellent accompanying narratives to the songs. This can be seen with the cult-like haunting circle of Willow and the ‘Folklore’ cabin.

Another highlight was experiencing the smooth transition from Don’t Blame Me to Look What You Made Me Do in person. Swift foreboded the increasing tempo and sinister bass with an assertive stance to become “the actress starring in your bad dreams”.

https://www.tiktok.com/@qazimzim/video/7341752006475795720

There were also a couple of endearing localised easter eggs peppered throughout the concert like dancer Kameron ‘Kam’ Saunders’ “No lah” on We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together .

taylor swift surprise songs tracker the eras tour 2024

Then there was the surprise song acoustics segment, which is like a rewarding blind box. As Swift sauntered towards the resting instruments in the infamous yellow dress, the crowd crossed their fingers tightly, hoping she would perform a song on their wishlist. Night one featured a mashup of Mine and Starlight performed with the guitar and another mashup of I Don’t Wanna Live Forever and Dress performed with the piano. Interestingly, the latter two tracks are songs from ‘Reputation’ and Swift’s Instagram streamed this segment live. This prompted a guessing game regarding the release of ‘Reputation’ (Taylor’s Version).

*Update: Night two featured a mashup of Long Story Short and The Story Of Us on the guitar and a mashup of Clean and title track evermore on the piano.

A greatest hits concert can be tricky to pull off but Swift shrewdly delivered the peaks of her career straightforwardly. ‘The Eras Tour’ has got to be one of the most important concerts in today’s popular culture, so make no reservations and catch it should the opportunity be presented to you. You’ll definitely see me at the National Stadium again on the final night of the Singapore leg.

Taylor Swift: Singapore prime minister defends deal to secure exclusive access to Eras tour

Prime minister Lee Hsien Loong confirmed an ‘arrangement’ for Singapore to be the only stop on Swift’s south-east Asia Eras tour

Singapore prime minister Lee Hsien Loong has defended an incentive provided to Taylor Swift by his government, to make the country the only stop in south-east Asia on her world tour, saying it was not a hostile act towards its neighbours.

“[Our] agencies negotiated an arrangement with her to come to Singapore and perform and to make Singapore her only stop in south-east Asia,” Lee told a press conference in Melbourne, where he is attending a regional summit.

“It has turned out to be a very successful arrangement. I don’t see that as being unfriendly.”

Swift is currently part way through the six sold-out shows in Singapore.

Thailand’s prime minister claimed last month that the concert promoter AEG had informed him that the Singaporean government offered subsidies of US$2m-$3m (£1.6m-£2.4m) a show as part of an exclusivity agreement.

Singapore’s government previously said it had given Swift a grant to play in the city-state, without mentioning the terms of the deal. However, on Tuesday Lee confirmed that Swift was provided with “certain incentives” from a government fund established to rebuild tourism after the pandemic, but did not say how much the deal cost.

Some south-east Asian neighbours have complained they have been deprived of the tourist boom that her concerts bring.

Last month a Filipino lawmaker said it “isn’t what good neighbours do”.

Lee did not directly answer when asked if he had encountered “bad blood” among other leaders due to the arrangement and suggested that if Singapore hadn’t struck an exclusive deal, a neighbouring country might have done so. “Sometimes one country makes a deal, sometimes another country does. I don’t explicitly say ‘you will come here only on condition that you’ll not go to other places,’” Lee said. Swift’s representative did not immediately respond to a request for comment from the Associated Press news agency.

Lee said he expected that Australia similarly made “mutually acceptable, sensible arrangements” with Swift when she performed in Sydney and Melbourne before flying to Singapore, but added that he did not know what those arrangements were. “If that’s what’s needed to be done to get an outcome which is mutually beneficial and which, from Singapore’s point of view, serves not just to grow the economy but also to bring in visitors and goodwill from all over the region, I don’t see why not,” Lee said. Many of Swift’s fans across south-east Asia were bitterly disappointed when it was announced last year that she would skip most of the region and stop only in Singapore during her Eras tour. Even for those with the means to travel to see her, securing tickets was difficult.

Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour in Singapore: A look back at the highlights and lowlights

From electrifying performances to cute marriage proposals, here are some noteworthy events that happened during Taylor Swift's highly-anticipated Eras Tour – good and bad.

Hazeeq Sukri

The Singapore leg of Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour will soon reach its conclusion – her final performance is on Saturday (Mar 9). The six-night concert was undoubtedly one of the country’s – and region’s – most talked about entertainment events in recent times. So did it live up to its hype? We certainly thought so .

Still, a lot of things happened during the time of the Eras Tour and we thought we’d compile a list of some of the more exciting – and side-eye-worthy – events that happened to preserve the fun memories and bring everyone up to speed (especially those who muted CNA Lifestyle on social media during this time).

THE HIGHLIGHTS

1. MASTERCLASS PERFORMANCES AND SET PIECES

singapore eras tour taylor swift

As mentioned in our review of the Eras Tour, the performances were top-notch. The bottom line is: Everyone got their money’s worth on the entertainment front. Swift proved the haters ( gonna hate, hate, hate, hate, hate ) wrong and gave her all night after night, whether it was belting out her hits, nailing the dance moves or playing her piano and guitar to great fanfare.

singapore eras tour taylor swift

Sabrina Carpenter also showed that she was ready to headline a larger venue for her next solo concert in Singapore, thanks to her amazing crowd work.

The set pieces also deserve praise. From giant platforms, LED screens and glowing canes, every element elevated their respective era – hello, Folklore house – making them a delight to watch.

2. THE OUTROS FOR SABRINA CARPENTER’S SONG, NONSENSE

As most fans know, during her song Nonsense, Carpenter usually does an outro that is specific to the city she’s performing in. Singapore was no different and attendees were treated to a unique outro each night, from innocuous ditties to ones that were downright risque and had alleged partners blushing.

A dancer in Swift’s Eras Tour, Kameron Saunders gained attention and praise in recent days for his use of Singlish during the performance of We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together. Like Carpenter, Saunders usually says a line that's unique to each city during this performance. For the Australian leg of the Eras Tour, Saunders thrilled the crowd with the likes of " Naur "   and " Yeah, nah ".

The Singapore leg saw Swift handing Saunders her microphone after she sang the line “Like, we are never getting back together” to which Saunders responded with a Singlish phrase. So far, these have included “ Walao eh ”, “ No, lah ” and “ Alamak ”.

4. THE FAMOUS FACES THAT ATTENDED THE ERAS TOUR

View this post on Instagram A post shared by LISA (@lalalalisa_m)

The Singapore leg of the Eras Tour also became a celebrity-spotting ground as famous faces flocked to the National Stadium to catch Swift. K-pop stars Lisa, Sorn and Minho attended the second night of the Eras Tour and Saltburn actor Barry Keoghan has been spotted on multiple nights, supporting rumoured beau Sabrina Carpenter.

Local celebrities also joined in the fun. Newly-minted mother Rebecca Lim  was "out of confinement" and attended an Eras Tour show. Other personalities included Nathan Hartono, JJ Lin and Carina Lau.

Now, Swift's NFL star boyfriend Travis Kelce has arrived in Singapore to liven up the party. The 34-year-old Kansas City Chiefs tight end arrived on Thursday (Mar 7) while Swift was already in the midst of her concert.

5. THE MARRIAGE PROPOSALS

Congratulations are in order for the newly-minted brides-to-be at the Eras Tour. The shows saw multiple men proposing to their partners during the song Love Story, with audience members cheering them on. Thankfully, their proposals were accepted, adding to an even more enchanted atmosphere.

6. THE SWIFTONOMICS OF IT ALL

singapore eras tour taylor swift

Say what you will about the whole exclusivity saga but there’s no denying that it has helped a lot of businesses here. Local businesses selling Swift-themed merch are reporting an uptick in sales while regional demand for Singapore hotels and airlines has seen a spike of up to 30 per cent.

According to one expert, Singapore’s leg of the Eras Tour could potentially generate a revenue of more than US$787 million in economic value. That’s a lot of money.

A few organisations event held Taylor Swift-themed events , such as bracelet-making sessions and photobooths, to build up hype in the days leading up to the Eras Tour here. These events saw Swifties from all over the region coming together to make new friendships and memories.

Speaking of Swifties, who could forget the sheer effort and creativity they've put into  crafting Swift-themed outfits for the show?

THE LOWLIGHTS

1. CROWD CONTROL ISSUES ON THE FIRST NIGHT

Unfortunately, the Eras Tour shows weren’t without faults. The opening night saw fans from other sections rushing into the VIP area, encroaching into the personal space of a few VIP ticketholders, who went online to air their grievances about the bad experience.

According to TikTok user @linmaxin, security guards “pushed the extra people” into the VIP ticketholders’ rows, causing even more crowding to the point where it was “hard to breathe”.

A spokesperson from Kallang Alive Sport Management (KASM) told CNA Lifestyle that they added resources and barriers for the Mar 3 show, Swift's second night, to enhance crowd control measures, and that there were no further reports of such situations since.

2. SECURITY LAPSES THAT SAW FANS ENTERING THE VENUE WITHOUT TICKETS

Two men have also since been charged for helping three other people enter the venue without a ticket. On the third day of the Eras Tour, 29-year-old Yang Chenguang allegedly distracted a security officer while 45-year-old Li Xiao Wei held onto a turnstile to allow three people to enter the National Stadium.

This situation, coupled with the crowd control issues above, makes us wonder if enough security measures had been deployed for such a major event.

3. LOTS OF PEOPLE FELL VICTIM TO TICKET SCAMS RELATED TO THE ERAS TOUR

In early March, the Singapore Police Force revealed that at least S$213,000 (US$158,000) were lost to Taylor Swift concert ticket scams over the past two months – with the number of victims exceeding 330.

Victims would come across concert ticket listings on platforms such as Telegram, X, Facebook and Xiaohongshu.

Scammers would then instruct victims to make payments via PayNow, bank transfers or virtual credits and become uncontactable once they’ve received the funds.

In an effort to curb scams, Carousell suspended ticket sales for the Eras Tour from Feb 23 to Mar 9.

One of the victims of such scams was Thai influencer Chopleum who only found out that her tickets "had already been used" when she tried to enter the National Stadium. A similar case was reported by the owners of pimple patch brand Dododots who claimed that one of the two tickets they bought on resale site StubHub had "already been scanned in".

4. THE RAINY WEATHER

Unfortunately, it was raining for most of the Eras Tour shows. While this did not impact the performances, attendees had to brave the midnight rain as they exited the National Stadium, inconveniencing those who did not bring a poncho.

The good news is that we're now officially out of the woods. There’s no denying that the Eras Tour will go down in history as an impactful event for Singapore. The shows exceeded the wildest dreams of almost every attendee and, suffice it to say, the Eras Tour has become a benchmark for future concerts here.

SINGAPORE — With American megastar Taylor Swift ’s highly anticipated Eras Tour in Singapore set to kick off this Saturday (March 2), excitement among fans has reached a fever pitch.

Some businesses  here have also jumped on the hype train, with several of them organising Taylor Swift-themed events to cater to the hundreds of thousands of fans —  or “Swifties” — who are set to descend on the city-state for the singer’s six sold-out concerts here.

The Eras Tour Trail organised by Marina Bay Sands (MBS), in particular, recently caught the attention of international Swifties for its elaborate installations.

The trail features seven photo-worthy art displays, tailor-made to match the unique aesthetics of each of Swift's albums. The singer has released 10 albums so far.

A sneak preview of the trail was shared in a video on Wednesday by TikTok user Teresa C Herman, who expressed amazement at the colourful installations.

The fan who is based in the United States frequently posts content regarding Swift on her TikTok account. She says in the video of the displays: “They set up separate Taylor Swift stations and I’m pretty sure they are photo (opportunities).”

The first installation in her video features lavender floral arches, illuminated butterflies and a fairytale carriage, presumably in reference to the song Today Was A Fairytale.

She then shows a photo of a large, curved screen displaying the word "Lover" — also the title of Swift’s seventh studio album — against a backdrop of purple and pink.

“It gets better, it gets better,” Ms Herman enthused before flashing a photo of a grand piano enveloped in moss, like the one featured in Swift’s music video for the song Cardigan.

She then goes on to show images of a majestic golden throne in reference to the song Look What You Made Me Do, a pyramid of old television sets to represent the album 1989, as well as a gazebo of fluffy white clouds for the album Midnights.

“Singapore is winning right now and I cannot wait to see the photos,” Ms Herman says, concluding her video.

In less than a day, Ms Herman’s video swiftly got more than 337,000 views, 32,000 likes and 650 comments as of Thursday afternoon.

Many viewers were in awe of the installations and praised Singapore for pulling out all the stops.

A  TikTok user remarked: “They understood the assignment!”

Another wrote that Singapore is "changing name to Swiftngapore now”, while one viewer  quipped: “One thing about Singapore is they never half-*** anything. Go big or go home!”

Singaporean Swifties were equally excited and expressed pride in their country.

One person said, using the slang for going crazy over Swift: “I live here and the island’s gone Tay Tay Cray — loving it!”

Another wrote: “I’m just glad my home country has made an effort to celebrate Taylor. Can’t wait to see her this weekend!”

The installations for The Eras Tour Trail are spread across The Shoppes and Sands Expo and Convention Centre at the integrated resort, and are open to the public for free from now until March 13.

Apart from the trail, visitors may also catch a 14-minute water and light show synchronised to some of Swift’s biggest hits.

MBS' iconic facade will also be illuminated in the colours of the Eras Tour upon nightfall between now and March 7.

Elsewhere, fans eager for a warm-up before the concerts may join a sing-along session at Jewel Changi Airport on Friday.

Even Chinese hot-pot chain Haidilao cannot shake off "Taylormania", offering diners the opportunity to make friendship bracelets for free at its City Square Mall and Bedok Mall outlets.

Swift arrived in Singapore at Seletar Airport on Tuesday to a welcome party of around 60 fans.

She will perform at the National Stadium on March 2 to 4, and March 7 to 9. Singapore is the only Southeast Asian stop on her Eras Tour.

Look What Taylor Swift’s Exclusive Singapore Shows Made Its Southeast Asian Neighbors Do

F ans across Southeast Asia were seeing Red when news broke last year that Singapore would be the only regional stop for Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour. But as concertgoers swarm to Singapore for the pop star’s six sold-out shows starting this weekend, it seems like Bad Blood is also brewing among neighboring government officials, amid allegations that Singaporean authorities specifically brokered a deal for TIME’s 2023 Person of the Year to Stay Stay Stay in the city-state.

On Wednesday, Philippine lawmaker Joey Salceda called on the Philippines’ Department of Foreign Affairs to pressure its Singaporean counterpart agency for an explanation on the Delicate situation, local media reported.

“If true, [this] isn’t what good neighbors do,” said Salceda, adding that while the grant gave a significant boost to Singapore’s economy, “it was at the expense of neighboring countries, which could not attract their own foreign concert goers, and whose fans had to go to Singapore.”

“It also runs contrary to the principle of consensus-based relations and solidarity on which the ASEAN was founded,” he said, referring to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, a body that helps to coordinate cooperation in the region.

How You Get the Girl

Speculations of an exclusivity deal between Singapore and Taylor Swift’s were first brought up by Thai Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin, who told a Bangkok business forum on Feb. 16 that he had heard from Swift’s concert promoter Anschutz Entertainment Group (AEG) that the Singapore government had offered up to $3 million to Swift’s team for each of the shows she would put on in Singapore, in exchange for a promise not to perform anywhere else in Southeast Asia during her Eras Tour.

AEG did not immediately respond to TIME’s request for comment, while Singapore’s tourism and youth authorities confirmed to TIME in a joint statement that the tourism board had “supported the event through a grant” without specifying the sum or details of any restrictive clause.

“If I had known this, I would have brought the shows to Thailand,” Srettha said at the forum, describing the Singapore government as “clever” for allegedly brokering an exclusive deal with the organizers.

There’s little wonder why governments are desperate to have Swift grace their stadiums. The Grammy-winning singer is known to revitalize local economies wherever she goes . More than 300,000 tickets have been sold for Swift’s Singapore shows, and buzz surrounding the concert is giving the city-state a phenomenal economic boost. Tourists traveling in to catch Swift’s performance have driven up local hotel and flight prices by up to 30% , and experts estimate that Swift’s concerts could generate up to $500 million in tourism revenue—along with the cascading economic impact of the city solidifying its reputation as a massive events hub.

The youth ministry, its statement to TIME said, “recognized that there will be significant demand from Singaporeans as well as fans across the region for her to perform in Singapore, and worked directly with AEG Presents for Taylor Swift to perform in Singapore.”

You Belong With Me

While some are decrying Singapore’s maneuver, others see opportunity in trying to replicate its success. Indonesia’s tourism minister told Bloomberg earlier this month that they “need ‘Swiftonomics’ for Indonesian tourism” and were introducing policies to entice more tourists to visit the country, including a seed fund of up to 2 trillion rupiah (about $127 million) per year to support music, sports, and cultural events.

And last week, when asked if Hong Kong would consider “similar arrangements” when trying to attract pop concerts to revive the city’s post-pandemic economy—in reference to Swift’s alleged deal in Singapore—the Chinese enclave’s leader John Lee said : “Amid Hong Kong’s fierce competition with other cities that have been striving to improve themselves, we have to be relentless in our efforts to lure mega events including matches, sports events and cultural events.”

Hong Kong authorities recently dedicated nearly $2 million in grants to welcome TIME’s 2023 Athlete of the Year Lionel Messi and his team Inter Miami to the city for a friendly match—though that ended in a PR disaster .

Taylor Swift Eras Tour Singapore: Exclusivity and Tourism Impact

Sean O'Neill , Skift

March 6th, 2024 at 3:53 PM EST

Thailand has alleged Singapore paid $3 million a concert to keep Taylor Swift from performing elsewhere in Southeast Asia. Singapore didn't say how much it paid. The debate shows the power of music events for tourism.

Sean O'Neill

Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong on Tuesday defended an exclusivity deal with Taylor Swift , which made the city-state the only regional stop of the popular Eras concert tour this week.

Singapore had attracted controversy for the deal, with some other countries considering it an unfriendly move.

What’s the controversy?

The Singapore Tourism Board supported AEG Presents Asia in bringing Taylor Swift’s  The Eras Tour  to Singapore as the only stop in Southeast Asia.

Some neighboring travel destinations resented the exclusivity and lost tourism.

Last month, Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin of Thailand claimed Singapore had paid Swift up to $3 million per show for the exclusivity provision, the New York Times reported . Ministers in the Phillippines also complained.

A Singaporean minister responded that the compensation was “ nowhere as high ” as that.

Why does it matter?

It’s not the first time governments have been willing to pay for exclusive rights to events to help boost tourism.

But Singapore’s deal highlights two things: Taylor Swift is a tourism powerhouse , and government deals for regional exclusivity can disadvantage less wealthy destinations.

What’s the latest twist?

Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong confirmed Tuesday that Singapore had paid a fee to the American singer-songwriter to make the city-state her only stop in Southeast Asia, which has a population of 700 million.

The prime minister weighed into the controversy on Tuesday, saying Singapore was not being “ unfriendly ” to its neighbors by cutting a deal with the performer, CNN reported .

“[Our] agencies negotiated an arrangement with her to come to Singapore and perform and to make Singapore her only stop in Southeast Asia,” Lee said at a press conference . “Certain incentives were provided to her, and a deal was reached. It has turned out to be a very successful arrangement. I don’t see that as being unfriendly.”

What’s the tourism impact?

Event organizers have sold over 300,000 tickets to Taylor Swift’s six sold-out concerts in Singapore, which wrap up this week. Some key points from an earlier Skift story by Peden Doma Bhutia:

  • When tourists attend a concert or event, their incremental in-destination spending can range from 4 to 5 times the face value of the ticket, according to online travel agency Klook.
  • “We saw over half a million fans in the queue spending more than $1,200 on bundles , including a pair of tickets and a hotel stay,” said Sarah Wan, Klook’s general manager for Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore.

The best street style from Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour in Singapore

By Azrin Tan

9 March 2024

Be it the dark, brooding deliveries inspired after her 'Reputation' era or the bubblegum-pop mania of Swift’s 'Lover', the Swifties really said pose, slay and serve

Are you ready for it? The long-awaited Eras Tour has finally arrived on our shores—and just last night, Taylor Swift commenced her six-night streak with a sellout opening night that had Swifties singing their hearts out . Make no mistake of it: the anticipation has been notably high these past weeks, what with legions of fans gathering to make friendship bracelets and Taylor Swift-related activiations happening all across town. In the lead up to the tour hitting our side of the globe, other forms of preparation have also been at the forefront of show-goers’ minds: that of their concert garb .

By all means, a regular concert in our humid climes would only call upon the most comfortable ensembles—but the same cannot be said for a Taylor Swift affair. If the kitschy friendship bracelets being made in her name were not enough of a tell, Swifties are making this their swan song: no time and effort spared to ensure that they’ll be walking into the National Stadium in no less than their sartorial best.

And with the first day done and dusted, the verdict is in. With surprise songs ‘Mine’ and ‘Starlight’ sending all into a frenzy, her legions of fans in the stands reflected this fervour in kind—with a fabulous outing of the most kaleidoscopic hues, eclectic ensembles and ferociously stylish characters. Of course, there was no doubt that many came decked out in looks that were completely modelled after a different ‘era’ of the Grammy award-winning singer’s immense discography; be it the dark, brooding deliveries inspired after the serpent-esque Reputation era or the bubblegum-pop mania of Swift’s Lover . Many also recalled Swift’s country roots—also undoubtedly the rising genre of the season—as they arrived in an array of cowboy boots and hats.

As we await Swift’s next night in town, spy the most elaborate, high-octane, and downright audacious street style looks from Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour stop in Singapore, as captured by Leong Su Shan .

Taylor Swift's Singapore leg spurs bad blood in SE Asia. Neighbors can't shake it off

HONG KONG — Pop star Taylor Swift is in Singapore this week, performing six sold-out shows in the city state. But the concerts — and what the government did to secure them — have sparked some bad blood between Singapore and neighboring Southeast Asian countries and territories.

Singapore this week confirmed it negotiated a deal with Swift's concert promoters, paying an undisclosed sum of money to ensure that Singapore was her only stop in the region.

Rumors of the exclusive deal had sparked outcry among Southeast Asian neighbors, with a Philippine lawmaker demanding an explanation, Thailand's prime minister claiming Singapore paid millions of dollars per concert for the deal, and Hong Kong's chief executive insisting his city was still an attractive destination for mega events.

Singapore's prime minister, Lee Hsien Loong, defended the exclusive deal at a press conference on Tuesday.

"A deal was reached. And so it has turned out to be a very successful arrangement. I don't see that as being unfriendly," he said at an Asian summit in Melbourne.

Lee added that an "incentive" had been paid for the deal. The Singapore Tourism Board declined to comment on the amount, citing business confidentiality. AEG Presents, Swift's concert promoter, did not respond to a request for comment.

Following Lee's remarks, Philippine lawmaker Joey Salceda told a local newspaper that Singapore was operating by "the law of the jungle" and not the law of a "neighborhood of countries bound by supposed principles of solidarity and consensus."

Singapore, Thailand and the Philippines typically enjoy smooth diplomatic relations. They are all members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, ASEAN , a regional economic and security bloc.

Underneath the heated rhetoric is a growing industry worth billions of dollars. Event tourism — like Swift's concerts — brings in a lot of money for cities. Research firm Business Markets Insights expects the Asia Pacific events market to grow to nearly 550 billion dollars by 2028.

Fans of singer Taylor Swift take pictures next to an installation in the "Eras Tour Trail" that depicts different eras of the pop star's career, at the Marina Bay Sands complex in Singapore, on Feb. 28. More than 300,000 Swifties from Singapore and neighboring countries will attend the U.S. superstar's six sold-out Eras Tour shows at the National Stadium from March 2-9.

"Event tourism is a key trend," said Erica Tay, an economist in Singapore with Malaysia-based Malayan Banking Berhad, or Maybank.

Younger travelers crave experiences, more than stuff, and are more likely to travel to a city to attend a concert or watch a sporting event, she said. "By hosting Taylor Swift and other A-list acts, I think Singapore is building its credentials to be an event tourism hub," she added.

Tay estimates Swift's concerts will bring in $370 million in tourism receipts to the country

in a little over a week, while the pop star is in town.

When nearby cities see the multimillion dollar boost they are missing out on, it prompts some soul searching.

Last month, Hong Kong's chief executive, John Lee, was asked by reporters about Singapore's efforts to get Swift, and whether Hong Kong is being ambitious enough when it comes to securing mega events.

"We know we'll be competing with different cities. And we'll ensure we're attractive enough and competitive enough," he said.

Until that happens, Hong Kong is losing out on fans spending big bucks to see performers like Coldplay , Ed Sheeran and now Taylor Swift — top acts that skipped Hong Kong, but played in Singapore.

Husband and wife Haseeb Khan and Audie Wibowo paid about $450 each for their Swift tickets, plus another $300 each for flights from Hong Kong. They plan to stay with family in Singapore.

"Even if my family wasn't there, my friends weren't there, if we didn't have anything in Singapore to go to, we would still go," she said.

It was a similar story for 13-year-old Anoushka and her mom Neha Malik. Malik used loyalty points for their flights from Hong Kong to Singapore, to offset the steep price they paid of about $750 per ticket.

"It is a big splurge, but it's kind of like birthday, Christmas, everything rolled into one," she said. "Better to have one big memory which will last forever."

Getting nearby Swifties to fly in and splurge on her concerts is exactly what Singapore officials wanted.

Beyond an economic boost, there's also the reputational lift Swift's presence brings.

"Her endorsement of Singapore, you know, will really put the country on the map for hundreds of millions of her fans," said Tay, the economist.

"It's hard to put a value on it, but I think it's really positive."

Taylor Swift’s Music Returns to TikTok, Despite App’s Ongoing Dispute with UMG

By Ethan Millman

Taylor Swift ‘s catalog is once again available on TikTok , even as her record label, Universal Music Group, is still in the middle of a heated dispute with the influential short-form video platform.

Back in February, Swift’s tracks were among the thousands pulled off TikTok after UMG announced that it hadn’t reached a new licensing agreement with the app, claiming in an open letter that TikTok wasn’t compensating artists enough for their work, also citing concerns over safety and AI music on the platform.

Reps for Swift, UMG, and TikTok didn’t respond to Rolling Stone’s request for comment.

Swift’s music is back a week before she’s set to release her upcoming 11th album The Tortured Poets Department. A major question now becomes whether Swift’s catalog returning means that Tortured Poets will be available on the app come release day.

Taylor Swift's return to TikTok shows even the world's biggest stars still need the app

  • Taylor Swift is back on TikTok despite a feud between the app and her label Universal Music Group.
  • The artist's song catalog returned a week before her new album rolls out.
  • Swift's reemergence shows that even the world's biggest stars need TikTok to promote their work.

Insider Today

Taylor Swift is back on TikTok .

The pop star's music, along with tracks from hundreds of other artists like Drake and Olivia Rodrigo, was pulled off the app at the end of January amid a contract dispute between her record label Universal Music Group and the ByteDance-owned company. The purging of songs later expanded to Universal Music's publishing arm, hitting a wide swath of performers around the world.

The move has been particularly troubling for artists who are releasing new music this year. TikTok is an essential promotional tool for performers and record labels. Music fans use the app to find new songs, and user-generated trends can help old and new tracks break into the Billboard 100. UMG artists can still post videos on TikTok, but they can't use their own tracks , making it harder to push a new album. In the meantime, marketers have been using other short-video products like Instagram reels to promote songs.

The TikTok-UMG feud isn't over. The two parties are waiting each other out, to win favorable licensing terms and prove once and for all who needs each other more . And yet, Taylor Swift's music made it back onto the app this week, a few days before she's set to release her new album "The Tortured Poets Department."

As Variety reported , Swift owns her own masters while still being repped by UMG, creating a window for her to negotiate her own terms with TikTok. The label, which declined to comment on the record to Business Insider, seems to have acquiesced to allow Swift's music to reappear. TikTok did not respond to BI's comment request.

Swift's return to TikTok shows that even the industry's biggest stars still need to use the app to help a new album take off.

The megastar has 283 million Instagram followers, nearly 100 million monthly Spotify listeners, and around 57 million YouTube subscribers. A single social-media post from the 34-year-old performer can send her "Swifties" fan base into a frenzy.

And yet, Swift's team made the move to port her content back over to TikTok, seemingly undermining the bargaining position of UMG during its TikTok fight.

Swift has a track record of doing things on her own terms. She bypassed Hollywood studios to work directly with AMC for the film release of her Eras tour, for example, which earned over $250 million at the box office globally. Her 2023 Eras tour was an economic force on its own, adding $4.3 billion to the US's gross domestic product, with similar economic spikes projected in countries like Singapore and Australia as she continues her tour internationally this year, per Bloomberg.

The TikTok-UMG fight is inspiring more artists to take control of their music

For artists and producers, having the ability to assert independence in an industry controlled by a few major labels is critical, music producer Chauncey Hollis Jr. , known professionally as Hit-Boy, told BI.

Like many artists, Hit-Boy, who works with UMG's publishing arm, saw some of his music pulled from TikTok earlier this year. It strengthened his resolve to take more control over his music going forward.

"It is just kind of frustrating in that sense where I'm literally spending my money to create and have these platforms to promote and push what I'm doing, and it's like I have no control over it," he told BI. "What else can they strip away from the artist's ability to be seen and heard? We don't know. What's important is to just know that regardless of what happened, you have to just create your own platforms and the people that rock with you, they're going to come."

Nielsen says viewing was driven by an audience that was 70% female, and it was pretty evenly distributed across age ranges. Naturally, the 18-34 demo had the highest concentration of viewing with 26%.

That’s due in part to the fact that The Gentleman saw a 54% surge in viewership from the week prior, tallying 1.86B viewing minutes during this interval.

In second place with Damsel , which was up 26% from its debut week to deliver 1.5B viewing minutes. According to Nielsen, one-third of viewing to Damsel came from Hispanic homes.

On Disney+, Bluey ‘s reign continues. The animated kids series bested the billion-minute mark yet again, having done so each week since the week of Christmas, capturing 1.06B viewing minutes to take No. 4.

Taylor Swift Spotted at L.A. Dive Bar During Eras Tour Break

The singer’s security reportedly paid the tab after she left Barney’s Beanery in West Hollywood

Taylor Swift enjoyed a casual night with friends.

On Thursday, April 5, the pop star, who is on a brief hiatus from her record-breaking Eras Tour , went to a dinner at Los Angeles pub Barney’s Beanery , PEOPLE confirms. The eatery has multiple locations in California, including Pasadena, Santa Monica and West Hollywood, where Swift was spotted.

The outing was reportedly for a birthday dinner with friends, according to TMZ . In photos obtained by the outlet, Swift was sitting in a booth seat by the window.

An onlooker tells PEOPLE that their table shared pizza and a few other sides. Barney’s Beanery serves classic bar food like wings and mozzarella sticks, burgers and nachos.

"Taylor was very low-key," the source added to PEOPLE. "She was there for about two hours."

TMZ reports that the “Cruel Summer” singer’s security paid the tab after she left the restaurant.

Swift has had her bodyguards handle payment before. In September, while out to dinner in New York City with pals Laura Dern and Zoë Kravitz , her security secretly paid the bill at the close of the meal.

In a feature article from New York magazine’s Vulture section, journalist Rachel Handler interviewed the bartender at Il Buco Alimentari , who waited on Swift, Dern , Kravitz and Greta Gerwig on Sept. 19. The employee, who was identified as Julius, revealed that Swift’s security guards secretly paid the bill for her so that her other friends didn’t get the chance to.

“Laura Dern was going to pay the bill,” Julius recalled to Vulture. “She’s like, ‘Darling, take this.’ I was like, ‘No.’ She was like, ‘Why??’ I said, ‘Ms. Taylor paid!’”

And according to Julius, the singer tipped generously.

Swift wrapped a series of six shows at the Singapore National Stadium on Saturday, March 9. The tour resumes in Paris on Thursday, May 9 for the start of its European leg.

In the interim, she and boyfriend Travis Kelce took a tropical getaway to the Bahamas . The couple was snapped walking hand-in-hand.

"It was a much-needed break for both of them," a source told PEOPLE in March. "They very much enjoyed it. They are so happy together."
