Amazing trip! We saw a lot of animals despite bad weather. The food was nice and the lodge was cosy. I would recommend staying longer than we did (we only had three days).

9 Day Incredible South African Safari and Drakensberg Adventure Tour

9 Day Incredible South African Safari and Drakensberg Adventure

We had a wonderful tour, made possible by a great guide. We wanted to get a taste of a variety of parks and found the destinations very thoughtfully put together. It is a lot of driving to see the various areas but there were strategic breaks. Loved staying inside the parks and having critters outside the veranda . We saw 13 rhinos in one day! Wade was great at seeing things we would have missed and always able to manoeuvre the car for best views and photos. They are quite happy to tailor your experience so don’t be afraid to ask.

Kruger Lodge Experience

5+ Stars! I had the most AMAZING experience with INTREPID on a safari in South Africas, Kruger National Park. We saw all the big 5, ate well, felt safe, and had an absolutely amazing once in a lifetime type guide! I very strongly advise those who choose this trip to ask for a man who works at the Timbaviti game lodge named Johane. This is the guy you want taking you on African safari for the unforgettable experience and amazing photographs! The highest of recommendations for this guide and his camping safari. -Tristan

Luxury Garden Route Journey from Cape Town Tour

Luxury Garden Route Journey from Cape Town

Perfect tour of Cape Town, Garden Route, Addo and Wine farms, as well as Uncover South Africa Naturist Tour. Our family holiday in South Africa was spent with the Cape Town, Winelands, Garden Route & Addo National Park tour from stunning Cape Town. We booked the tour online a couple of months in advance, and it turned out to be the best! We also booked the Uncover South Africa Naturist Tour, as we are naturists/nudists, and how fantastic! If you are into this, you will not regret doing this tour, it was just such an amazing experience of SA, and we met so many local naturists, friends we made to last forever. Highly recommended. We received a VIP itinerary and treatment from Jakes of Amatungulu Tours and the professional and knowledgeable guide we had was excellent and reassuring. All the places and landmarks that truly matters are selected for this tour, and we saw amazing scenery, wildlife, history, fauna and flora. The traditional food was to die for and the overnight accommodation a rare treat. For what I thought would bore my children turned out to be such beauty and exhilarating experiences, that even them was caught enjoying themselves. These tours exceeded all our expectations and opened our eyes to the real history and beauty of South Africa and we highly recommended it to all our friends, and the readers.

Best of Kruger National Park Tour

Best of Kruger National Park

The tour was really awesome. Each day we got to see so much and we were so lucky to get to see the Big 5! The only thing that let the experience down was the accommodation which was pretty dated and felt damp. But it had been wet and we were reluctant to overuse the aircon. The food was generous and the staff were very friendly and accomodating. Next time we go safari, we will spend a little more now that we know what to experimenter. Thank you for a great tour.

The luxury safari tours in South Africa for the best wildlife

South Africa is home to an incredible assortment of African animals.

For example, the Dulini Moya Lodge , in the heart of the Sabi Sand Game Reserve, offers one of the highest chances in Africa to see elusive leopards.

The Dulini Moya offers you luxury accommodation, delicious cuisine and personalized service in this incredible reserve.

The Sabi Sand Game Reserve will be mentioned my most safari professionals as a top option for South Africa safari destinations.

The Sabi Sands, as the reserve is affectionately known, joined the private game reserves surrounding the famous Kruger National Park into one wildlife paradise of a protected area.

This incredible region is in fact part of the Great Kruger National Park region.

The Sabi Sands shares an unfenced boundary with Kruger National Park. The difference, however, is that a limited number of guests at the few lodges in the Sabi Sands have exclusive access. Also, the safari operators can venture off-road to give you the best wildlife sightings.

Not only this, but because of sensitive viewing practices and the high protection, some animals (notably leopards) are far more easily observed than in other South African areas.

Click the short video below for an introduction to the Dulini Moya .

Dulini Moya Lodge

In addition to the Dulini Moya , there are some other lodges offering the same high standard of comfort, service and guiding. These include the Dulini River Lodge and Leadwood Lodge .

You can find these in the same wildlife-rich Sabi Sand Game Reserve offering almost incomparable experiences of the Big 5.

The Dulini River Lodge , as the name suggests, is positioned a little closer to the Sand River, which gave the name to the reserve. Designed with couples, solo adventurers, and small groups in mind, this is another recommendation for your South Africa safari tour.

And if you’d like a little more exclusivity, there is the Dulini Leadwood Lodge .

Dulini Leadwood Lodge, South Africa

You will find the Dulini Leadwood Lodge in the same region as the Dulini River Lodge . However, this luxury safari lodge offers only four spacious and exclusive suites. This gives you a little more privacy and exclusivity in the Sabi Sands.

Top Safari Tours for the Madikwe Reserve

Madikwe is a fantastic 80,000 hectare Big-5, wildlife-rich reserve in South Africa. And there are 3 safari tours we recommend for your experience.

Jaci’s Tree Lodge

Jacis Tree Lodge

Jaci’s Tree Lodge is a remarkable destination that seamlessly blends with the natural beauty of the Madikwe Reserve.

Click the video above for a quick introduction.

The lodge itself is part of the experience. The elevated design makes it seem like you are part of the surrounding forest. This creates a fantastic contrast after your day-time experiences exploring the grasslands.

From the comfortable lodge, you will explore this incredible reserve on captivating twice-daily game drives. You will be scouting for the reserve’s incredible animal sightings. In addition to game drives, you can enjoy walking safaris for a more immersive experience.

As well as iconic lions, elephants, buffalo, leopards and rhino, you can find African wild dogs, cheetahs, brown and spotted hyenas, giraffes, hippos, and numerous antelope species. There are also porcupines, warthogs, servals, baboons and over 350 bird species to find.

As a point of note, you will find the rhinos in the Madikwe all have their horns intact, which you will find in few other South African reserves. This is due to the less invasive (but effective) protection methods in the Madikwe.

Jaci’s Safari Lodge

Offering the same exciting experiences of the reserve as Jacis Tree Lodge above, including the walking safaris and game drives, the Safari Lodge is located in a more open area on the grasslands.

About Booking This Tour

Travel Documents

If you are a U.S. citizen traveling internationally , you will need a valid passport to enter the countries on this itinerary.

It is required that your passport be valid for at least six months beyond the completion of the tour. New rules at South Africa's airports also require travelers to have two consecutive blank visa pages in their passport which lie side-by-side when the passport is open (i.e. a left and a right-hand page). Travelers also need a third page blank labeled "visa" at the top in order to enter. (This third blank page need not be consecutive with the blank two-page spread noted above that is required for entry into South Africa.) These must be pages marked "visa" at the top. U.S. citizens who need to add extra pages to their passport should go to the following website and click on the passport link or you could call your nearest U.S. passport agency for information on this process.

Passengers traveling to South Africa with passports that do not comply with these requirements will either be prevented from boarding their flight to South Africa or risk deportation upon arrival.

The countries of South Africa, Zambia and Botswana do not require a visa for U.S. citizens.

Please Note:  Guests under the age of 18 are required to provide an unabridged birth certificate during their time in Botswana. Failure to do so will result in their inability to enter the country.

If you are a citizen of another country traveling internationally, you should contact a consulate or embassy of each of the countries visited on this itinerary to determine what travel documentation is required.

We strongly recommend that you make at least two photocopies of all the travel documents that you bring with you. Include copies of the photo page of your passport that contains the date of issuance, the date of expiration and your citizenship. Secure one set of copies in the safe in your room while traveling and leave one set behind with someone at home who will assist you in the event your documents are misplaced, lost or stolen.

To facilitate Travel Requirements, destinations are increasingly utilizing online forms that require digital proof that you've successfully completed your submission (via an email, QR code, etc.) To ensure smooth travels and peace of mind, we strongly recommend all guests carry a personal smart phone and sign up for international data plans before traveling overseas.

TRAVELING WITH CHILDREN AS A GUARDIAN:  If you are traveling as the guardian of a child/children, we strongly suggest that you carry a letter from both parents of the child authorizing emergency treatment in the event of illness or accident. For travel abroad, many foreign countries have specific entry requirements for children under 21 who are traveling internationally without BOTH parents. (These requirements are in response to the increased incidence of children being abducted and taken abroad.) PLEASE NOTE THAT TAUCK IS NOT RESPONSIBLE for the disruption of travel caused by improper documentation for children traveling without both parents.

Travel Protection Plan

Effective for plans purchased as of July 1, 2021:

Tauck's Guest Protection

Tauck's Guest Protection provides you with cancellation protection before your journey begins as well as insurance benefits while you are traveling. Guest Protection includes the following:

Cancellation Waiver – Provided by Tauck:

Under Tauck's Cancellation Fee Waiver you can cancel your tour for ANY REASON up to the day before departure and receive a money-back refund (except in Extreme Circumstances*) on the land tour cost, based on your original method of payment.

*Extreme Circumstances:  In the event of an act of God, war (whether declared or undeclared), terrorism, accident, natural disaster, outbreak of disease, or other event or circumstance beyond our control that contributes to or results in cancellation rates above our historical cancellation rates in the absence of such event or occurrence, Tauck reserves the right to issue a credit to you in lieu of a money-back refund, applicable to a future Tauck journey.

Travel Insurance Benefits – Underwritten by United States Fire Insurance Company.

  • Trip Cancellation –  If you must cancel your tour due to a covered reason, the plan provides coverage for the amount you paid for your travel arrangements. Since the non-insurance cancellation waiver takes care of the land package cancellation fees already, this benefit reimburses the airfare cancellation charges up to the value of your original airfare purchase.

  • Travel Delay –  Provides reimbursement for missed, prepaid travel arrangements if you are delayed by a common carrier, natural disaster, unannounced strike, or other reasons as cited in the plan.
  • Medical Expense –  Reimburses covered medical expenses incurred in the event you become injured or sick during your trip.
  • Baggage / Personal Effects Protection –  Provides reimbursement in the event your luggage or personal effects are, lost, stolen, damaged or delayed during your trip.
  • Worldwide Emergency Assistance Services –  Provided by CareFree Travel Assistance; 24-hour emergency telephone assistance hotline for medical and travel related problems.

The cost of Tauck's Guest Protection is: $769 per person

This protection provides insurance coverage that applies only during the covered trip. You may have coverage from other sources that provides you with similar benefits but may be subject to different restrictions depending upon your other coverages. You may wish to compare the terms of this policy with your existing life, health, home and automobile policies. If you have any questions about your current coverage, call your insurer, insurance agent or broker.

This optional Guest Protection must be requested at time of booking and fee must be included with initial payment. Fees are based on costs as of July 2021, and are subject to change. Details will be provided with written confirmation of your tour reservation. Guest Protection does not protect travel agent commissions. Reimbursements will be made according to original method of payment. The amount of any refund shall be reduced by any recoveries obtained by you from any third parties.

The Guest Protection plan waives cancellation fees outlined below, provided we are notified of cancellation before your tour departs. Tour cancellation fees are waived regardless of reason, without written notice, and Tauck will refund land tour cost.

To obtain your state-specific Certificate of Insurance that contains the complete terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions of the certificate, visit  affinitytravelcert.com/docs/TACGPPINTL .

If You Have To Cancel

If you cancel within 10 days of initial deposit Within the first 10 days after you place your initial deposit, you may cancel your reservation for any reason with no cancellation fees. If you cancel more than 10 days after initial deposit Regardless of reason, cancellations result in costly charges from our travel and hotel providers covering penalties and fees incurred by canceling confirmed bookings. These fees vary from tour to tour. Therefore, the following fees apply.

Loss of Guest Protection fee, per person

Cancellation Fees without Tauck's Guest Protection Plan :

90 days or more before departure = $600 per person

89-8 days before departure = $1250 per person

7-1 days before departure = $2000 per person

Time of cancellation will be when notice is received in our Wilton Woods, CT office.

In the event of an unforeseen circumstance beyond our control, Tauck reserves the right to amend the cancellation terms outlined herein.

Travel Requirements For This Tour

Air Information and Luggage Restrictions

AIRFARE: Airfare to and from this destination is not included in the journey cost. If purchasing your air elsewhere, it is very important to provide us with your confirmed arriving and departing flight information no later than 3 weeks before your arrival date. Flight information can be submitted to Tauck (or verified, if you've already provided it) in the My Account section of Tauck.com.

TAUCK AIRPORT TRANSFERS are included at the start and end of the journey between the airport and the Tauck hotel. Airport transfers are available for any pre tour or post tour hotel stays immediately consecutive to the tour, providing flight information is received in the Tauck office no later than three weeks in advance. Details on locating your transfer upon arrival to the tour start city will be included in your final documents.

AIRLINES and CHECKED LUGGAGE: Due to space limitations during your Tauck journey, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one average-size suitcase per person. Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much more strict in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and are free to revise luggage policies without notice. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies. PLEASE NOTE that if you are booked on a tour that includes on-tour flights, the checked luggage weight restrictions for these flights may be lower than the weight restrictions for your international flights.

Checked Luggage – General

Due to internal flights with limited storage capacity throughout the tour, a special rolling duffel bag (30x 15 x 14 inches) to be used for the entire tour; will be mailed to your home prior to your tour departure. This duffel bag has been selected to provide you with adequate space for all items needed during your stay. Please Note: This duffel bag will be your only piece of luggage for the entirety of the tour. Please pack accordingly.

While larger suitcases are prohibited, each guest is allowed a small carry-on bag for your essentials (camera, binoculars, etc) in addition to the duffel bag weighing up to 20 KG (44 lbs).

Please remember that casual attire is acceptable on this tour and there will be various opportunities to utilize laundry services.

Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much more strict in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and luggage exceeding airline standards for size or weight may result in expensive overage fees or other consequences.

Airlines are free to revise luggage policies without notice, and certain airlines have different baggage allowances for different classes of service. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies.

Tauck luggage tags will be provided by your Tauck Director on Day 1 of your itinerary. Please do not attach a Tauck luggage tag to any carry-on items, as the Tauck tags designate luggage that is to be handled and transferred by ground operators and hotel staff during your journey.

Although oversize bags and wheeled, carry-on luggage are popular for airline travel, they are often not convenient or appropriate for safari vehicle travel or for many on-tour flights. Most modern safari vehicles offer limited space for numerous or larger items. Space under seats is typically small, and designed to accommodate items like coats, hats, purses, and small camera bags, etc.

For your day-to-day travel while on tour, we recommend that you limit your hand luggage to a small, soft-sided carry-on piece, and that you bring only those items you need handy during the day such as make-up,valuables, cameras, film, etc. Items too large to fit under the seat must be stored in the luggage truck, and will be inaccessible during daytime travel.

Health, Safety and Mobility

HEALTH CONSIDERATIONS

If you have a medical condition that might limit your participation in activities, please consult your physician for pre-departure health advice and notify us as soon as possible, if you have not already done so. We will advise your Tauck Director accordingly.

Please check with your health insurance provider to determine whether you are covered while traveling. If you will not be covered under your current policy, we strongly suggest that you arrange for adequate coverage while on tour.

VACCINATION REQUIREMENTS AND RECOMMENDATIONS

Immigration authorities in some nations require travelers to provide proof of vaccination against certain diseases in order to enter those countries. These requirements are subject to frequent change as outbreaks occur and subside, and it is therefore crucial that you obtain the very latest information on entry requirements as you prepare for your journey.

For the most current information possible vaccination requirements, please consult the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) by clicking here  and the World Health Organization (WHO) by clicking here . You may also wish to visit the web sites for the embassies of the countries you will be visiting. Besides providing details on vaccination requirements, these sites can also provide information on vaccinations that may be recommended (but aren't required) and other potential health issues for which no vaccines are available.

Any decisions relating to your health, of course, should not be based solely on information provided by a web site. It is critically important that you consult with your personal physician prior to your journey to obtain any required vaccinations and to review any optional recommendations offered by the CDC or other sources.

Please be sure to discuss your journey with your physician at least four to six weeks in advance of your departure, as certain vaccinations take time to become fully effective. Also, be certain to ask your physician for proof of any vaccinations you receive, and to pack this proof along with your other travel documents in your carry-on luggage (not in your checked luggage).

Researching and complying with vaccination entry requirements for the countries visited on this itinerary is the responsibility of the traveler and not Tauck. Tauck is therefore not responsible for any expenses incurred or disruptions to travel caused by improper or incomplete vaccinations, or by the failure to provide proof of required vaccinations.

If you do not obtain the necessary vaccinations and proper documentation, you may be denied entry into one or more countries, or temporarily quarantined until the necessary vaccinations are administered, or until proper documentation is provided.

All travelers to Africa should be in reasonably good health. There is a significant amount of walking on this tour, frequently in warm weather, as well as climbing in and out of safari vehicles and frequent air travel. We strongly advise that guests who require assistance walking or travel with oxygen tanks may not fully enjoy this very active journey.

There are certain rules and regulations that one should be aware of while on  safari. It is important that you listen to your tour director, local guide or  ranger, as they are trained to be aware of the environment around them.

Guests should be aware that while on safari, you will be traveling in smaller  groups and will travel on small bush planes and/or helicopters.

Guests will share smaller safari vehicles, where they will be required to rotate  not only safari guides, rangers and cars, but also seats within the car. Please  note that there are limited medical facilities, and guests will not have  exclusive use to a vehicle should they need special attention or consideration.

The safari vehicles are not air conditioned. The cars have six window seats, and  are open air for animal viewing. Please note that the areas traversed  on game drives are typically unpaved and will often be bumpy and dusty.

Please note that all Tauck guests will dine at Tauck Designated tables for  meals. The majority of meals while on safari, are buffet due to the  international guests that stay at the lodges.

AN IMPORTANT NOTE ON SUPPLEMENTAL OXYGEN AND MOBILITY ISSUES: This Tauck itinerary cannot accommodate oxygen tanks, wheelchairs or motorized scooters. Oxygen tanks are strictly prohibited in many foreign countries on regional flights aboard small aircraft, such as those intra-tour flights featured on this Tauck journey. Likewise, the very limited cargo capacity on such flights prohibits the transport of wheelchairs or motorized scooters.

Guests should also bear in mind that the infrastructure in many foreign countries, particularly in developing countries, often presents severe and even insurmountable challenges for those with walking difficulties or other mobility issues. The responsibility of the Tauck Director is to ensure that the larger group enjoys a relaxing and informative journey, and he or she cannot be relied upon to provide ongoing individual assistance to any one guest. Guests requiring such individualized assistance must be accompanied by an able-bodied companion who can provide it.

SPECIAL DIETARY REQUESTS

The restaurants, hotels, caterers and numerous other partners we work with all do their best to accommodate special dietary requests from Tauck guests. However, given the diverse nature of those food providers (from small wineries to grand hotels to world-famous restaurants in more than 70 countries worldwide), some of our partners are better able than others to accommodate such requests. We therefore cannot guarantee that all dietary requests can be accommodated at every meal. Also, please note that where dietary requests can be accommodated, choices will frequently be limited.

Reading List

We have compiled a reading list of recommended books to give you more information about the destinations you will be traveling to on your upcoming journey!

You can view the reading list  here.

South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Botswana are a year-round destination, as frequently the climate features bright, sunny days. Temperatures in the summer (November to February) and autumn (March and April) typically range from the mid-50's to the high-70's degrees Fahrenheit , or 10 to 21 degrees Celsius, in South Africa. Meanwhile, the winter (May to August) and spring (September to October) seasons typically bring temperatures from the mid-40's to the low-70's F, or 4 to 21 C, in South Africa.

South Africa is generally considered to be an arid region, with two-thirds of the country receiving less than 22 inches, or 56 centimeters, of rain per year. The central part of the country typically sees rainfall in the summer. Meanwhile, in Cape Town and its surroundings, it is typically most rainy in the winter months.

To read about current weather conditions, we suggest you log on to the Internet website by clicking here.

What To Pack

Generally, lightweight, cotton, short-sleeved and long-sleeved shirts, shorts and long pants are sufficient. A light jacket, fleece, or windbreaker, as well as layers of clothing, are suggested for cooler temperatures during early morning game drives, especially from June through August, and for evenings. A bandana or cotton scarf will always come in handy.

For the welcome and farewell dinners, and for dining in the larger cities, many guests like to dress up, but by all means be comfortable.

While on safari it is recommended you wear natural earth-colored clothing, such as khakis, tans, browns, and greens, as well as comfortable walking shoes. It is also a good idea to bring a swimsuit, hat, sunscreen, sunglasses, and lip protection.

Game drives can be dusty, so wear something that can be washed while on safari. Valet service is available at all lodges and hotels.A personal kit with medication for possible upset stomach, aspirin, and allergy medicine may also be useful. If you are taking prescription drugs, bring a prescription signed by your doctor in case you need an emergency refill while traveling. Insect repellent with DEET is a very important item to include in your kit. Pre-moistened towelettes, antibacterial lotion, and a flashlight will also be useful on your safari.

Pack your medical kit in your carry-on bag along with an extra pair of prescription glasses or contact lenses and a change of clothes in case of luggage delay.

For viewing wildlife, we recommend you bring a good pair of binoculars and your own photography supplies, such as plenty of film, batteries, a 200mm telephoto lens, lens cap, lens papers, UV filter and, for video-recording, an adequate supply of video cassettes.

We suggest that you pack the following items your journey:

  • Casual daytime wear – shorts, slacks, long and short-sleeved shirts
  • An optional jacket and tie for men
  • Casually elegant evening wear for ladies
  • Sunglasses, sunscreen, hat
  • A light sweater or jacket for higher elevations or a breezy night
  • Binoculars (7x50 preferably)
  • Insect repellent
  • Camera, lenses, batteries, memory cards and chargers
  • Lightweight, comfortable, sturdy walking shoes that have already been broken-in
  • Travel alarm clock/cell phone with alarm function (many hotels do not have clocks in the rooms)
  • Rain poncho and collapsible umbrella
  • Reusable zipper-lock bags or other waterproof bags
  • Daypack for camera equipment
  • Sundries and toiletries that may be difficult to find en route
  • Copies of your travel documents that should be secured in the safe in your hotel room while traveling

Please refer to the Necessary Gear website at  www.necessarygear.com  as one option available to you for renting and purchasing apparel, PPEs, and other items appropriate for your journey.

Benefits of Using Zicasso

Popular South Africa Safari Styles

Large male lion in Kgalagadi National Park, South Africa

South Africa’s dry season arrives in May and lasts until October. It is the best time of the year for seeing wildlife as animals wander in search of water and food, and rainfall rarely affects visibility. There is also less vegetation, creating more openings in the bush to see the wildlife.

While dry season temperatures are cooler than in the southern hemisphere’s summer, lows seldom drop below 50°F, and a typical day in July, the southern hemisphere’s winter, averages around 65°F. As most days offer clear skies and sunshine, the conditions are excellent for game drives, bush walks, and more African safari experiences .

If you can only travel outside of the dry season, October through April have their own benefits. The rainfall waters the bushveld and the landscapes are brought to life, migratory birds are present and far easier to see, and rain showers are brief and rarely interfere with safari activities.

To find a month or season that works best for you, explore our guide on the best time for safari in South Africa .

We recommend spending a minimum of 10 days on safari, though 12 days provide more time to view the wildlife, and two weeks is ideal for visiting multiple camps and reserves. That said, you can customize your safari based on the number of days you have available.

10-day safaris are great for exploring a specific reserve like Sabi Sands, while 12-day safaris give you a little more time to visit multiple game reserves in Kruger. Spending two weeks on safari gives you plenty of time to visit multiple camps and enjoy various safari activities in South Africa’s top national parks and reserves. You may see herds of elephants bathing in a river one day and watch a pride of lions saunter to shady acacias a day or two later. You may also leave some days unplanned, giving you room to relax in the amenities at your safari camp or lodge.

You can also plan safaris for longer, and spending upwards of two weeks gives you more opportunities to see your favorite animals and birdlife. The length of your safari is guided by what you want to see and do, and we can help you decide.

Kruger National Park is the most recognizable safari destination in South Africa. Within the Kruger region, Sabi Sands and Mala Mala top our list of game reserves to visit on safari:

  • Kruger National Park : As the best place to safari in South Africa, especially among fans of the Big Five, it’s hard to pass up on visiting Kruger Park. With several stunning reserves within the greater Kruger region, no safari is ever the same.
  • Sabi Sands Game Reserve: Sabi Sands, on the border of Kruger, is South Africa’s most luxurious game reserve. It’s often the first game reserve booked for luxury South African safaris as the lodges are some of the finest in the world.
  • Mala Mala Game Reserve: Situated within the Kruger region, Mala Mala is a private game reserve that offers exceptional wildlife viewing and unrivaled luxury. The Kruger reserve is a hotspot for viewing the Big Five from the comfort of gorgeous camps within the untamed wilderness.

From Big Five game drives to bush and beach trips, guided bush walks, and nocturnal wildlife viewing, here are some of the top things to do in South Africa on safari:

  • Search for the Big Five, including lions, leopards, elephants, rhinos, and buffalos on South Africa safari game drives
  • Explore the bush with spotlights on nighttime game drives to see the nocturnal wildlife
  • Stay in luxury tented camps for a uniquely lavish experience surrounded by nature
  • Visit a safari reserve on the coast to see great white sharks, whales, and other marine life

There’s nothing quite as thrilling as coming face to face with a pride of lions or watching a massive elephant bull pass right by the front of your vehicle. From the Big Five to migratory birds, here are some of the animals in South Africa to see on safari:

  • African wild dogs

We recommend that travelers come adequately prepared for a safari tour in South Africa, which means packing some additional items over and above your usual travel packing list. Here are some items to consider packing for your African adventure :

  • Neutral, light-colored clothing
  • Lightweight, waterproof rain jacket
  • Long pants for bush walks
  • Hiking boots or comfortable walking shoes
  • Camera with a zoom lens, spare batteries, and memory cards
  • Insect and mosquito repellent
  • Sun protection, including but not limited to sunscreen, hats, lip balm, and sunglasses

A safari in South Africa is very safe.

South Africa’s safari animals pose little threat to your safety provided that you follow the instructions and guidance of your game rangers and guides.

Some regions in South Africa are malaria-free, though we advise bringing mosquito and insect repellent for your comfort.

Pickpocketing and petty crime are highly unlikely at South Africa’s safari lodges, although we recommend being mindful of your personal belongings wherever you travel in the world.

At the same time, the diverse range of topography, vegetation and climate has been responsible for sustaining splendid wildlife and biodiversity that finds itself silhouetted against the panoramic scenic views of South Africa’s savannahs, desert, coastal and mountain landscapes.

Apart from its physical splendour and wildlife wonders, RSA also has important urban centers, such as Cape Town, Johannesburg, Pretoria and Durban. All of these cities have their own natural setting and charm, their commercial centers, historical and culturally significant destinations and monuments that reflect on the long and arduous history of South Africa. Cape Town, for example, is surrounded by natural landscapes that give the city a beautiful touch. A hike to the Table Mountain, Liona’s Head, Champmana’s Peak or a visit to the Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens, or watching penguins along the False Bay are as attractive as taking a stroll along the Victoria and Albert Waterfront or paying a visit to Robben Island an important landmark in the apartheid struggle. The Johannesburg side is famous for Sun City, Cradle of Humankind and the world famous Kruger national park. Do consult our destination experts to co-create your bespoke trip to South Africa.

Traditionally South Africa has two distinct tourist circuits – one is the Cape Town circuit another is the Johannesburg circuit, most guests usually do the best of both. If you are more adventurous, then there are more regions to explore as well such as Kgalagadi transfrontier park and many private game reserves. Another experience worth doing in South Africa is getting onboard one of its luxury trains, they are truly an affair to remember for lifetime.

Cape Town is a prominent city of South Africa and on the checklist of all of the South Africa tours. It offers visitors a variety of experiences that include historic museums, cuisine exploration, nature and ecological experience and urban city entertainment. Some of the famous things to see are Cape of Good Hope, Table Mountain, Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden, and Robben Island.

The Garden Route National Park is a must include in your South Africa holiday packages if you would like to see the natural flora and fauna along coastal South Africa.Along the route one can see whale migration, do cage diving to see great white sharks and pass through some of the most breath-taking landscapes.

It is one of the biggest cities in South Africa and a must-include in your holiday packages in South Africa to experience the happening urban life here. The city is famous for its art scene, historical monuments, museums and cultural centers.Nearby is Sun City which is a luxury resort and casino, and often a must see place for most visitors. Cradle of humankind, 50km apart, is said to have artefacts from the origin of human civilisation and is a recommended place to visit.

A part of all South Africa wildlife tours, Kruger National Park is one of Africa’s largest game reserves that is famous for its high density of wild animals including the Big 5 – elephants, rhinos, lions, leopards, and buffalos. It is also home to many bird species like storks, vultures, and eagles. The park is uniquely favoured by Nature to have a variety of landscape like Bush plains, mountains, and forests. Safari trips in South Africa are incomplete without a visit to this Mecca of wildlife. It is definitely recommended for discerning guests looking for a touch of luxury.

Sabi Sands Game Reserve

Adjoining Kruger is Sabi Sands game reserve, a private reserve with limited luxury accommodation options, giving a more private and exclusive experience on game drives. It is famous for its frequent Leopard sightings, though all African big Cats and and most African mammals can be found here. Sabi Sands is definitely a must-visit place in all luxurious South Africa vacation packages.

Namibia offers extraordinary beauty and uniqueness. It is a must-visit African country. It possessed the world’s oldest desert with the highest sand dunes in the world, that meet the sea. It also offers the rugged desert mountains of the Namibian Escarpment with its desert elephants and rhinos, and the vast Etosha National Park, which ranks as one of the world’s greatest game parks.

The tour will lead you through vastly diverse habitat types, including: coastal shores and estuaries, broad-leaved woodland, riverine forest, floodplains, grass plains, papyrus swamps, mountains, gravel and sandy deserts. We will visit Windhoek and surrounds, the Namib Desert sand dunes around Sossusvlei , Spitzkoppe, Etosha, and the Caprivi Strip .

It offers remarkable contrasts from the lily-laden backwaters of the Okavango Panhandle to the desolate Makgadikgadi Salt Pans. Botswana's exceptional avifauna includes several range-restricted and highly sought-after species.

The tour will commence in the drier area of Maun, from where we venture east towards the Makgadikgadi Pans , before returning to access the Moremi Game Reserve and the Okavango Delta . Female - Phabeni Gate Rd - small.jpg

We will begin our tour in Cape Town, as no trip to South Africa would be complete without a visit to one of the New 7 Wonders of the Natural World, Table Mountain . We will journey to the furthest south-western point of the continent at Cape Point, named "The Fairest Cape in all the World". Here we will search the Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve for Eland, Cape Mountain Zebra, Chacma Baboons, Ostriches and over 250 other bird species. The habitat of the region is called fynbos, and comprises the smallest but richest of the world’s six floral kingdoms. We will also visit Boulders National Park for the African Penguins. Whale watching, dolphin watching, and shark-cage diving expeditions are also an added option.

From here we will venture to the KwaZulu-Natal northern coast to the country's first world heritage site, the exceptionally diverse  iSimangaliso Wetland Park. This huge protected area consists of both land and marine areas. The park’s centrepiece is the vast Lake St. Lucia, home to large numbers of hippos, crocodiles, pelicans and flamingos. Elephants, giraffes, leopards, buffalo and both white and black rhino inhabit the grasslands, bushveld and forests of the Eastern and Western Shores, an Mkhuze Game Reserve. To the north, Sodwana Bay is known for its exceptional coral reefs, turtle tours, whale and dolphin watching. The bird list is extraordinary with an incredible 526 species on offer.

From here we will journey to the world renowned Kruger National Park and its adjacent western private reserves. Kruger is one of Africa’s largest game reserves and forms part of the Greater Limpopo Transfrontier Park. Its high density of wild animals includes the Big 5 (lions, leopards, rhinos, elephants and buffaloes) and another 142 other mammal species. The park is also home to a great diversity of 508 bird species, including vultures, eagles and storks. Mountains, bush plains and forests are all part of the landscape. The adjacent private reserves offer some of the greatest wildlife viewing and safari lodge experiences in the world, with an extraordinary concentration of predators and a great regularity of sightings.

Victoria Falls.jpg

Victoria Falls, Mana Pools, Hwange

White Rhino from below signed.jpg

On this trip we will visit the Victoria Falls region, Mana Pools National Park and Hwange National Park.

We will commence at the mighty Zambezi River and the thundering Victoria Falls , one of the seven Natural Wonders of the World, where the wide Zambezi plummets over 300ft into the Batoka Gorge. This region is diverse, and includes the Victoria Falls National Park, Kazungula, Mosi-ou-Tunya National Park. Zambezi National Park to the south of the Falls and many other habitats. The region offers a variety of birding habitats and opportunities including the rainforest next to the Falls itself, the Zambezi river, the gorges below the Falls, the miombo woodland surrounds and the National Park. Most of this area has large populations of African Elephant, African Buffalo, Lion and Hippopotamus, so great care must be taken when walking.

Over 470 species of birds are also on offer.

Mana Pools National Park lies in the heart of the Lower Zambezi Valley, where the river meanders through Zimbabwe all the way to the Indian Ocean. This remote, wildlife-rich area offers spectacular river views as well as floodplain, forest and escarpment vistas.

Mana Pools is a World Heritage Site, based on its pure wilderness and  beauty. It  is home to a wide range of mammals, over 350 bird species  and aquatic wildlife. It is rated as one of the top parks in Africa, and forms part of the Kavango-Zambezi Transfrontier Conservation Area. It is also a Ramsar Wetland Site and Important Bird Area.

Hwange National Park is in west Zimbabwe, and it is the largest park and protected area in Zimbabwe, covering some 1.4 million hectares (3.46 million acres). Hwange offers diverse habitats shared between desert-adapted and woodland species, ensuring large concentrations of wildlife, particularly elephants. The park offers over 100 species of mammals and nearly 400 bird species. Its grasslands and mopane woods are also home to Lion prides, African Wild Dogs, buffalo, sable, roan, giraffe, wildebeest, and gemsbok. In the northwest, animals gather at Mandavu and Masuma dams, where there are concealed lookouts. Bumbusi National Monument includes 18th-century ruins and pre-colonial rock carvings. In the southeast, waterholes include the Nyamandhlovu Pan, with its elevated viewing platform.

Testimonials

Our sincere thanks the AWS team for making our trip to Zimbabwe more a life experience than a holiday. This was our first journey overseas since Covid and it was perfect from the smallest detail to the amazing experiences which will stay in our memories forever. We have been travelling through Africa with your advice, support and guidance for more than 20 years and this latest adventure in the Zimbabwean bush confirms our view that you and your team are the very best in the business.
Our experience with African Wildlife Safaris and our consultant Michael was overwhelmingly positive.  Our travel between camps was all seamless and well organised.  The camps he advised us to visit were all varied and fantastic in their own ways including: the staff, food and our personal guides.  The stars of the show were the game drives with the animals we saw from the smallest mongoose to the biggest elephant and everything in between.  We had such a great time.  This was our first safari and it was beyond our expectations big thanks to Michael and AWS.

What Our Guests Say

south african wildlife tours

This African National Park Is The Perfect Spot To View A Wide Array Of Wildlife

O ne of the first things that likely comes to mind when thinking about Africa is the continent's wildlife. After all, "The Lion King" has brought in $1 billion for Disney, not to mention other popular animal-centric films like the "Madagascar" film series and "Out of Africa." Africa's wildlife has made for a significant safari tourism industry in multiple countries on the continent, especially those with vast swaths of savanna where you can find dozens if not hundreds of animal species for which the continent is famous.

Kruger National Park is the largest national park in South Africa. It also has the most biodiversity out of all of Africa's parks. The top things to see here are the Big 5: lions, leopards, rhinos, elephants, and buffalo. Nowadays, their draw is not so much due to how difficult and dangerous they are to hunt, but in how exciting it is to view these megafauna animals in general. Kruger is also home to wild dogs, giraffes, zebras, warthogs, antelopes, hippos, hyenas, and dozens more.

Book Transportation, Lodging, And Tours Ahead Of Your Visit

Shuttles from Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport (KMIA) to Kruger National Park depart regularly, but these must be booked in advance with the South African National Park website . Lodging at Kruger National Park ranges from camping to glamping . Visitors can go online to reserve camping spots, cottages, and even luxury suites. Though it is possible to drive yourself through the park, there are multiple options for guided tours.  Siyabona Africa Safari offers both self-driving and guided tour packages for one day or even five days in the park. Sentashya Safaris  has similar options and will even pick you up from your lodging accommodation.

Many of the animals including the Big 5 in Kruger National Park are experiencing concerning drops in population. Though tourism throughout the African continent has shifted away from hunting, it continues to be an issue for wildlife in Africa, as is habitat loss. Game reserves and national parks like Kruger may eventually be the only places where most of these endangered animals — especially the critically endangered rhino — exist at all. Whether you go on safari in Kruger or not, research how you can help endangered animals all over the world.

Newborn giraffe tries to take first steps on wobbly legs. Internet hearts it

A captivating video of a baby giraffe taking its first steps after its birth thrilled wildlife enthusiasts when the clip was posted by latest sightings on youtube. the footage was captured by johan van zyl from a south african tour-based operator, wild eye..

Listen to Story

south african wildlife tours

  • A baby giraffe's birth and its first steps were captured on video, mesmerising people
  • The video was captured by a South African tour operator, who witnessed the event
  • The video has received around two lakh views since it was posted online

An incredible video of a newborn giraffe trying to take its first steps on wobbly legs has left wildlife enthusiasts with a broad smile. Johan Van Zyl from Wild Eye (South African-based tour operator) had the privilege of witnessing this extraordinary event. He shared the remarkable footage and story with Latest Sightings, who further posted it on their YouTube channel.

"While out on the drive, we spotted a female giraffe and we could instantly tell that something was different about her. Her body language and movement were not normal. As we approached, we discovered that she was in the process of giving birth — something that is not often seen, let alone caught on camera," Johan said.

With bated breath, Johan and his team observed from a respectful distance, understanding the delicate nature of the moment. Female giraffes are particularly vulnerable during childbirth and unable to defend themselves. Hence, minimising stress is crucial for the safety of both the mother and the newborn.

Describing the event, Johan said, "The process took around 45 minutes to an hour and we were able to witness the entire birth. First, the newborn's legs emerged from the mother, and bit by bit, the rest of the body became visible. As it came to an end, we could see the relief on the mother's face, and with a loud thump out came this tiny newborn giraffe."

It is important to note that giraffes give birth standing up, and as seen in the video, the calf's 6-foot drop to the ground may seem daunting. However, this process aids in its first breath and circulation.

Yet, it poses another challenge for the mother, who must remain vigilant against potential predators alerted by the afterbirth scent.

"We watched as the little one struggled to take to its feet, wobbling and falling over. This was incredibly cute and heartwarming for everyone to see. New life had been witnessed, and it was amazing to see how active the little calf was from the get-go," Johan remarked. He further said that the mother tenderly nudged and encouraged her offspring.

"After all the failed attempts, the calf eventually stood on its own. Being born with long legs and a long neck is no easy task. But it managed to eventually stand with some care from its mother," he added.

Witnessing its tentative first steps filled onlookers with joy and wonder.

"As the calf took its first tentative strides, we knew it was time to retreat, granting the mother and baby the solitude they deserved," Johan shared. "Respecting their space is essential during such critical moments, ensuring their well-being above all else," he said.

With hearts brimming with gratitude, Johan and his team departed, leaving behind a scene of newfound life and resilience in the untamed wilderness.

Since being shared online, the video has got around two lakh views. Wildlife enthusiasts have expressed their thoughts in the comments section of the post.

"I am so pleased to see how a baby is born," a user said. "Whoever captured this is so lucky," another said.

"How wonderful life is. Amazing how fast they stand up and automatically know how and where to nurse. Wow," another comment read. Published By: Ashmita Saha Published On: May 1, 2024 READ | Lioness teaches her 4 cubs to climb a tree in South Africa. Watch adorable video
