Some people used to say the owner of the plane had left it there to have an original home in it while some others said that the owner wanted the craft to be a tourist attraction but when he ran out of money he just left it there and moved away. An interesting fact that was noticed was that its turbines were boarded up by wood in order to prevent people from finding its engines are missing.

Here is a handy map below, pinpointing the locations of all the best activities and attractions in Kuta

Why visit Kuta?

Bali kuta

First up, Kuta is a great hub for exploring Bali. Due to the airport this is where most people start and end their Bali trip – so almost everyone who goes to Bali at least travels through Kuta. But it is worth staying a few days if you can make the time.

Kuta is known for its stunning beaches, vibrant nightlife, and a wide range of restaurants, bars, and shops. Kuta is a perfect destination if you’re looking for a lively and bustling atmosphere with plenty of activities. Alongside all the tourism and chaos, Kuta also has plenty of deep rich culture and local life.

Kuta bali hindu religion

One of the main attractions of Kuta is its beautiful beaches, which are ideal for swimming, sunbathing, and surfing. The area is home to some of the best waves in Bali, making it a popular destination for surfers from all around the world. Additionally, there are plenty of beachside bars and restaurants, offering a range of local and international cuisine and drinks.

Aside from the beaches, Kuta also has a bustling nightlife scene, with plenty of bars, nightclubs, and live music venues. The area is particularly popular with young travelers who are looking for a lively and fun atmosphere. What’s more, Kuta has a range of shopping options, from street markets to luxury malls, where you can find anything from traditional handicrafts to designer fashion.

How do you get around in Kuta?

Kuta motorbike rental

Walking: Kuta is not a large area – only a few kilometers across. It only takes around 20 – 30 minutes to walk across Kuta. You can also enjoy exploring the markets, back streets and shops as you walk around. You can also walk along the beach.

Taxi: Taxi is a fast, efficient and cheap way to get around in Bali. You can use the Grab taxi app to get taxis in Kuta – and the advantage is that you can get a reasonable price for your taxi. Expect to pay around 20,000IDR – 60,000IDR for taxi rides around Kuta (roughly £1 – £3 or $1.20 – $4)

Bike rental: A fun, fast and convenient way to get around Kuta is bike rental. You can rent motorbikes in Bali for around 100,000IDR – 200,000IDR (roughly £5 – £10 or $6 – $12). Take care the traffic in Kuta can be pretty intense at times. Also watch out for the one way system around town. This can make it tricky to navigate. Also always remember to ride carefully & wear a helmet to stay safe. The roads around here can be crazy!

Car rental: Another way to travel around Kuta is car rental. In all honesty we don’t really recommend car rental if you’re just staying in Kuta. The one way system and traffic mean that car rental is not great just for exploring Kuta. But if you are planning to take a bigger trip around Bali – then you may wish to rent a car, and this can help you travel around in Kuta.

What is the best time of year to visit Kuta?

The backpacking family yoga Bali

Bali is a hot tropical climate with high temperatures and humidity throughout the year. You can expect the temperatures to reach a sweaty 25 – 30 degrees celsius throughout the year. There are two seasons in Bali – the hot dry season and the hot wet season:

Generally, the dry season between May and September is considered the best time to visit Kuta and Bali in general. During the dry season, the weather is generally sunny and dry, making it the perfect time to enjoy the beaches and outdoor activities. The surf is also at its best during this time. However, because of the ideal weather conditions, the dry season is also the busiest time of the year, with more tourists and higher prices.

If you prefer fewer crowds and lower prices, you may want to consider visiting Kuta during the wet season, which runs from October to April. Despite the name, it doesn’t rain all day, every day, but you can expect occasional rain showers. The wet season can be a great time to visit if you don’t mind the occasional rain and want to enjoy a more peaceful and relaxed atmosphere.

TOP TIP: Kuta can get busy any time of the year. We recommend booking your accommodation a couple of weeks in advance if possible. You will get a lot more choice if you are able to book early.

What things are available in Kuta?

Convenience store Kuta

Kuta is one of the most developed areas in Bali with plenty of shops, cafes and restaurants. You can find most things that you are likely to need in Kuta. Here is a feel for the things that are available in the area:

Food: There are plenty of cafes, restaurants and convenience stores to buy food in Kuta. There is a broad range of international food available in Kuta. Local food is cheap, tasty and readily available. There are also plenty of international chains too.

Drinks: You can buy drinks from convenience stores. This includes bottles of water, soft drinks and also alcoholic drinks. There are also plenty of bars and coffee shops around Kuta.

Kuta markets

Shopping: Kuta is also a great place for shopping. Whether you’re looking for shopping malls, brand names, local markets or clothes made with a local touch Kuta has it all. There is also a supermarket in the basement of Lippo Mall.

Sim cards: There are several small street side shops selling mobile phone accessories and sim cards. This is a great way to pick up a local sim card for your trip. You can then use the Grab taxi app on the go.

ATMs: There are also plenty of ATM machines around Kuta so it’s very easy to get cash out.

What are some of the challenges of staying in Kuta?

Kuta beach bali

We do love Kuta but it does have its own challenges. Here are a few challenges of staying in Kuta:

  • Busiest area of Bali: As the busiest area of Bali Kuta can have its own challenges. For example the better places to stay can get booked up quite early. Book your accommodation early if possible. Also be aware of your belongings – especially in public places like the beach.
  • One way systems: Kuta has some frustrating one way systems around town. These can be quite counter-intuitive and make navigation challenging.
  • Traffic: The popularity of Kuta also means that the traffic can be quite intense and chaotic. Some areas can get very congested meaning you have to wait hours in queues.
  • High prices: Kuta is one of the most touristy areas of Bali (an island that is already a popular tourist destination). This can result in relatively high prices in Kuta – and locals who are less willing to barter.
  • Scams: As far as we can tell there aren’t lots of scams in Kuta. However locals may try to over charge. The worst place is the airport arrivals area. Locals may push hard to sell taxis and even lie about prices and exchange rates to massively over charge you.
  • Less authentic local experiences: As a tourist hub, it can be harder to see the local culture and have authentic local experiences. So if you really want to experience Balinese culture we recommend getting out of Kuta and heading north.

Safety tips for Kuta

Kuta temple and culture

Here are a few safety tips to help you enjoy Kuta and stay safe on your trip:

  • Beware of pickpockets and petty theft. Keep your valuables close to you and avoid carrying large sums of cash.
  • Be careful when crossing the street, as traffic in Bali can be chaotic. Always use designated crosswalks and look both ways before crossing.
  • Only use official taxis and avoid unlicensed taxis, which may not have proper safety standards. Grab is a great way to get registered taxis in the area.
  • Be cautious when swimming in the ocean, as strong currents and undertows can be dangerous. Always obey warning signs.
  • Drink only bottled water and avoid tap water to prevent getting sick.
  • Be mindful of your alcohol intake and avoid excessive drinking, especially if you plan to swim or drive.
  • As ever, be aware of your surroundings and avoid walking alone late at night. Stick to well-lit areas and travel with a group if possible.

The BEST things to do in Kuta

1 try a surf lesson.

Surfing in Kuta Bali the backpacking family

If you’re looking for fun and active things to do in Kuta, why not take a surf lesson? Kuta beach is one of the best beaches for surfing in Bali. We loved surfing here. The conditions are generally pretty good for beginners with small waves (normally less than 1m depending on the conditions). Private one to one surf lessons in Kuta are impressively cheap. Lessons cost around 150,000IDR for 1.5 hours (around £8 or $10). You can rent a surfboard for 50,000IDR for an hour (around £3 or $3.50). The best time to surf is late afternoon – things are a little calmer at this time and the sun is less intense. We recommend booking a lesson with an established surf school. To find out more check out 27 Surf School in Kuta .

2 Enjoy a beautiful Bali sunset

Kuta beach sunset

One of our favorite things to do in Kuta is enjoy a stunning beach sunset. Kuta, as a west facing beach, is a great spot to enjoy the vibrant southeast Asian sunsets. There is a great atmosphere on Kuta beach at sunset. Kuta really comes to life in the evening – whether you want to grab a drink, take a swim, or surf at sunset, this area has a lovely vibe. If you’re expecting to have a tranquil paradise sunset beach all to yourself, Kuta isn’t going to do it for you. Kuta beach is very busy and it can actually get crowded at sunset time – but there is a nice atmosphere. For a more tranquil sunset beach we recommend that you consider some of the beaches further north on the west coast of Bali.

3 Go to WaterBom Bali

Waterbom Bali

For an exhilarating family-friendly activity in Kuta, check out the WaterBom Bali waterpark. If you’re really looking for an adrenaline rush check out Smashdown 2.0 with its 26m vertical drop. Another popular slide at WaterBom is the Superbowl, which is a slide that takes you through a swirling bowl before dropping you into a pool below. In addition to the water slides, the park also has a lazy river, wave pool, kids’ area with miniature slides and fountains, and a range of food outlets and souvenir shops. Day passes range in price £20 – £30. You can get WaterBom tickets on klook . Open daily from 9am – 6pm.

4 Have breakfast at the Crumb and Coaster

Bread and crumb cafe Kuta

One of our favorite things to do in Kuta is eat! There is plenty of amazing local and international food here. Don’t miss the awesome Crumb and Coaster cafe in Kuta. This small boutique cafe serves a range of fresh and delicious food and drinks. Their menu includes things like poached eggs, avocado on sourdough toast, pastries and treats like brownies. They also serve amazing coffee. You can probably tell from the description that this cafe is not the cheapest place around. The Crumb and Coaster has a lovely relaxed atmosphere – but it can get busy at times. Even at busy times the service is still efficient and reasonably quick. Prices range between 50,000IDR – 200,000IDR (roughly £3 – £12). Opening hours: 7.30am – 11pm. Address: Jl. Benesari No.2E, Kuta, Kec. Kuta, Kabupaten Badung, Bali 80361, Indonesia

5 Visit the Soft play at Lippo Mall

Lippo mall soft play

If you’re traveling Bali with toddlers or young kids, don’t miss the soft play spaces located on the ground floor and basement floor of Lippo Mall in Kuta. One of the best play spaces at Lippo mall is Play Land. There is a great range of activities. The indoor play spaces are a great thing to do in Bali with kids on a rainy day. The soft play places have a range of activities to engage kids such as ball pits, climbing forts, a small indoor climbing wall and more. The soft play is pretty cheap here: 50,000IDR – 75,000IDR (roughly £3 – £4 or $3.50 – $5), open daily from 10am – 10pm .

6 Try Nasi Champur

Nasi Champur Bali streetfood

Looking for cultural things to do in Kuta? We highly recommend trying some local food. You really can find a very broad range of international foods in Kuta, but don’t miss the amazing tasty local food. Local street food in Kuta is tasty and very affordable. nasi champur means “mixed rice”. Typically you are given a portion of rice and then select curries. Various foods are added such as eggs, veggies, fish and bean curd. This delicious dish is traditionally served in a basket. A portion of nasi champur generally costs around 30,000IDR – 60,000IDR (£1.50 – £3 or $2 or $4). If you’re looking for nasi champur then check out Warung Muslim Podomoro on Jalan Tamansari. This friendly little cafe serves fresh, tasty and delicious nasi champur.

Each villa features an en-suite bathroom, equipped with a large bathtub and a private, secluded outdoor shower area (showering outdoors is a unique experience). The beds are extremely comfortable, and the excellent air conditioning allows you to select the perfect temperature for your comfort.

We are particularly impressed with the large, clean outdoor private swimming pool that accompanies each villa. We’re not just talking plunge pools – there are proper swimming pools. The one-bedroom villa with a private pool sleeps up to three people (double bed and sofa bed) and is priced at £200 per night. Kuta bali temple

Bali has a beautiful and unique fusion of Hindu and Buddhist religion. Religion plays a huge role in people’s daily life in Bali. If you’re looking for cultural things to do in Bali we recommend paying a visit to one of the many temples in the area. Balinese temples tend to be aesthetically beautiful with stone sculptures, carvings and artwork. Here are a few temples that you can visit in the Kuta area: Dalem Tunon Temple, Adat Segara Pura Desa Kuta and Vihara Dharmayana Kuta. Locals are happy to welcome visitors to temples; If you are planning to visit a temple in Kuta it is important to dress in such a way as to respect the local culture. Generally speaking it is important to keep your knees and shoulders covered. You are also required to wear a sarong to visit many of the temples in Bali.

9 Visit the Bali Sea Turtle Society

baby turtles

If you’re looking for meaningful and interesting things to do in Bali make sure you drop by the Bali Sea Turtle Society (BSTS). This awesome center is dedicated to protection, conservation and education. You can learn about turtle reproduction, nesting and conservation techniques and they also protect baby turtles for 24 hours after hatching to help them grow a little stronger before releasing them into the wild. It is free to visit the Bali Sea Turtle Society – this organization runs entirely on donations.

10 Explore the Markets

Kuta bali markets

Kuta is also a great place for shopping! There are several small markets around Kuta. They tend to sell a range of gifts, clothes and local merch. The markets in the Kuta area are not very cheap. The high number of tourists here keeps prices higher. Bartering is acceptable – and necessary to get a fair price. You can find small streetside markets along Jalan Kartika plaza and Jalan Poppies Lane 1.

11 Smoothie Bowl

Bali smoothie bowl

One of our favorite things to do when we arrive in Kuta is grab a smoothie bowl! Smoothie bowls are delicious, healthy and filling. You can find smoothie bowls all around Kuta – whether its small boutique coffee shops or restaurants. They are often served in half a coconut shell. A thick sweet natural smoothie is topped with fresh cut fruit muesli or granola, nuts and dried fruits. A smoothie bowl normally costs around 60,000IDR – 100,000IDR (roughly £3 – £5 or $3.50 = $7). One of our favorite smoothie bowl places in Kuta is the Juice House located on Jalan Samudra.

12 Get a waffle

Whether you’re looking for a late night dessert or a treatful breakfast – Flapjacks doesn’t disappoint. They have a super tempting menu with icecreams, milkshakes, smoothies, waffles and pancakes. They also serve delicious coffee too! Most dishes range in price between 50,000IDR – 120,000IDR (£2.50 – £6 or $3 – $8). This unique experience costs around 600,000IDR – 700,000IDR per person (around £30 – £40 or $35 – $50).

Jamie Oliver kitchen Kuta

Kuta has a wide range of restaurants – everything from very cheap street food all the way up to premium dining. One of the more up market restaurants is the Jamie Oliver Kitchen. This gourmet restaurant has a range of dishes based on the creative work of the British Celeb chef Jamie Oliver. You can get pastas, pizzas, burgers and much more at this decadent restaurant.

Most dishes range from 100,000IDR – 300,000IDR (£5 – £15 or $6 – $18) at the Jamie Oliver Kitchen in Kuta. This is on the pricey side for the area – but if you’re looking for a tasty western fix, Jamie Oliver delivers.

Kuta & Tuban – Guide & Insights

There is often no real definite border between the clustered tourism destinations around Bali because even though these areas are based on real locations and villages, locals and tourists refer to them as part of a larger area. As Kuta stretches across the southwestern coast of Bali, travelers have a wide variety of areas of their choosing . Depending on the kind of atmosphere you want to be surrounded with, you’ll have to get familiar with what you’re looking for.

There are an incredible number of guesthouses, budget hotels, and affordable beachfront resorts in Kuta. Many offer great value to travelers on tight budgets who are certain to find something that they like . Some luxury villas with private pools are located near Legian and Seminyak, most of them with unique blends of Balinese and minimalist architecture . It would be an opportunity missed to not reap the benefits of staying within walking distance to the beach.

Kuta is packed with reasonably-priced restaurants that offer cuisine from every corner of the world. There are a plethora of dining options to choose from, including good Indonesian places that serve food to the many locals working around the area. If you are travelling on a tight budget, there are many street food vendors selling delicacies , such as nasi bungkus. However options are not scarce either for the fabulous brunches and fancy dinners in and around Kuta.

You’ll find most nights that the streets of Kuta light up and are filled with music and large crowds of party-goers who are up for anything. DJs and bands from around the world play nightly, while the drinks are cheap and plentiful. Many visitors hop from bar to bar, ending up in the bigger nightclubs as the night goes on. Lately, Kuta has become a playground for young travellers during holiday seasons, especially Australians on “Spring Break”. However, take note that Bali’s drug laws are fierce, and officials are not afraid to make use of those laws when necessary.

The beaches will be full of chairs and loungers that are able to be rented, and you’ll find that vendors are everywhere, they will always try to sell you anything ranging from handmade crafts to even a massage. Many locals and visiting families with children would hang out by the water, which is safe to play in. Kuta Beach has small and gentle waves with soft sand at the bottom that makes this a popular spot for people learning to surf. There are always surfers out on any given day, even if there are no waves. The long, flat Kuta Beach is a great place for a walk or jog in the morning or in the afternoon .

Kuta is a great place to learn how to surf as experienced surfers would tell you that this area has been known to be the place to enjoy constant fun on the beach. It also offers many options for family fun, including waterparks, cinemas and karaoke places. Kuta is packed with spas and massage parlours of excellent quality even with relatively low prices. There are also many shopping centres filled with international stores and restaurants. Travelers on a budget may also enjoy the many shops along the streets of Kuta, especially if they don’t mind some bargaining.

Kuta was once a quiet fishing village and was mostly undeveloped, even when Ubud and Sanur were already starting to attract travellers from around the world. That changed in the 1970s, as Bali became a more popular destination for surfing. Surfers were drawn to Kuta’s long stretch of rolling waves and its close proximity to other surf breaks . With them came the hippies and backpackers who were travelling through Southeast Asia. Over the next few decades, Kuta quickly grew into a major tourist hotspot, attracting visitors of all kinds .

You don’t need to worry when it comes to finding good transportation service in Kuta. The local government recently has provided numerous modern bus services to several places in Bali, including from the airport to Kuta and other regions. Some restaurants, malls, hotels and spas even provide free shuttle service for their customers. However, to feel at ease when getting around, it’s best to hire a private car with a driver for your trip. And if you have experiences with riding a scooter, renting one is usually the best way to explore the island.
