Visiting Qatar: The Complete Guide (2024)

Doha Guides Team regularly reviews this article to ensure the content is up-to-date and accurate. The last editorial review and update were on 06 February 2024.

The State of Qatar offers experiences combining old and new, traditional and modern. The country’s tourism sector is undergoing rapid development with milestone achievements in various sectors.

Qatar is also an important business hub, particularly for its robust oil and gas industry. Many trade shows and business conferences take place in Doha throughout the year.

In 2019 Qatar witnessed a huge leap in visitor arrivals with 2.1 million visitors, a double-digit growth compared to 2018. This article explains the types of visas, when to visit, public transport, local attractions, and other important things to consider before visiting Qatar.

Visiting Qatar: Types of Visas

Hamad international airport, qatar airways, cruise tourism, qatar weather, where to stay in qatar, public transportation, places to visit in qatar, how to dress while in qatar, qatar currency, working hours in qatar, faq on visiting qatar.

Did You Know? Thanks to Qatar’s strategic location at the crossroads of East and West, 80% of the world’s population is within a 6-hour flight from Qatar, and more than two-thirds can enter Qatar visa-free.

Qatar offers several visa options for visitors. Here are the common types of visit visa options:

Female Tourist in Doha Qatar

Gateway to Qatar

Qatar is centrally located globally, close to Europe, Africa, and Asia. Flights from around the world touch down at Qatar’s Hamad International Airport daily, making Qatar the perfect place for layovers and visits.

Doha, the capital city of Qatar, is modern and rapidly developing, with much construction underway. It is home to most of the country’s best museums and examples of cultural heritage.

Hamad International Airport

Qatar connects to various destinations worldwide, making it an extremely busy transit spot. In fact, Hamad International Airport (HIA) has fast become the global gateway for overseas travellers. Opened in April 2014, the state-of-the-art airport is conveniently located just south of Doha city.

HIA is certified as a 5 Star Airport by Skytrax and was ranked the Best Airport in the World at the 2021 and 2022 Skytrax World Airport Awards. The airport currently serves more than 30 million passengers annually and is undergoing further expansion to support more than 50 million.

Qatar Airways

Qatar Airways, the award-winning national carrier, is certified as a 5-Star Airline for its airport and onboard product and staff service quality.

The Qatar Airways network connects Doha with more than 150 popular destinations worldwide, including most major cities throughout the Middle East, Europe, Africa, Asia, Australasia & North, and South America.

Cruise tourism brings over 100 thousand visitors annually to Qatar, enabling them to enjoy the many landmarks that are mere minutes from Doha Port. The peak season runs from October to May, allowing visitors to enjoy the country’s pleasant winter weather during that time.

Qatar has two major seasons: Summer and Winter. May to September can be considered summer, while December to February is the cooler season. March to April and October to November are the transition months.

Summer temperatures are routinely 50°C during the day and often more than 40°C at night. It’s important to wear sunblock, cover yourself and drink plenty of water when going outside during the day.

During cooler months (December to February), the temperatures average between 14°C and 25°C on most days.

Since most of the attractions are within a couple of hours distance from Doha, you do not have to stay at different hotels during your Qatar vacation.

Doha has the presence of almost all major hotel chains in the world. You can choose from a range of Qatar hotels from TripAdvisor .

Doha’s city centre is just 15 minutes drive from the airport by car. To get from HIA to the city, you can take Airport Taxis available at Arrivals Terminal or request your hotel to arrange a private hotel transfer. It is possible to rent a car at the airport or at the hotels. An international driving license is required for visitors to drive in Qatar.

For travelling around the city, you can use the official taxi network called Karwa Taxi or pre-book a taxi using mobile apps like Uber or Careem . Even though Qatar has a network of public buses, they are not recommended for first-time visitors as their frequency is not guaranteed.

Another option would be to use the newly constructed Doha Metro. You can read our complete guide to Doha Metro here: Doha Metro Map, Stations, Timings, Ticket Prices

Doha Pearl Qatar

Qatar has a long list of interesting places to visit. Some of the more popular attractions include:

  • National Museum of Qatar
  • Museum of Islamic Art
  • Katara Cultural Village
  • The Pearl Qatar
  • Mall of Qatar, Place Vendome, and other shopping malls

You can see a comprehensive list of tourist places in Qatar here .

Since Qatar is an Islamic country, it is important to dress appropriately. Loose-fitting and modesty-covering clothing is the preferred style. Women are not required to wear the hijab or veil their heads in public.

Tourists are generally expected to cover their shoulders and knees at a minimum. Beachwear is acceptable at private beaches and swimming pools inside hotels.

The national currency of Qatar is the Qatari Riyal (QAR). One QAR is equivalent to 100 Dirhams. Qatar Banknotes are available in values of QAR 500, 200, 100, 50, 10, 5, and 1. Coins in circulation are 25 Dhs (QAR 0.25) and 50 Dhs (QAR 0.5).

Since Qatar Riyal is pegged to US Dollar, the value of USD 1 is around QAR 3.64. Banks and ATMs across the country take major international credit cards and debit cards.

  • Normally, the work week in Qatar is from Sunday to Thursday.
  • Government offices operate from 7 am to 2 pm.
  • Private offices operate from 8 am to 4 pm, or 9 am to 5 pm.
  • Shopping malls generally are open from 10 am to 10 pm and up to midnight on weekends.

Most shops and offices change their working hours during Ramadan . Visitors should refrain from eating and drinking in public, except in hotels, during the hours between sunrise and sunset.

Hi, my query is after my passport renewal I need to update new passport number on my QID. How can I do it? Only my company PRO can do it or I can also do it?

Hi Saddam, Please see this: https://www.dohaguides.com/change-passport-number-in-qatar-id/

Is to possible to change or extend tourist visa to work visa.?

Hi Shibla, In some cases, if your work visa is approved, you may be allowed to change your visa type without leaving the country. There will be an additional fee. Note that this may not be possible in all cases.

Hello. We arrive in Qatar at DOH November 24 at 6 AM. Are we allowed to leave the airport and visit the area for 8-10 hours that day? Thank you in advance for your reply.

Hi Robert, Due to the World Cup, the visa-on-arrival service (or any kind of tourist visa) is unavailable during that period. As per the current rule, you need a Hayya Card to visit Qatar from 1 November, and it is only available for those with a match ticket. There is still five weeks to go before your travel date. So please check back after a few weeks in case the rules change.

Greetings. can you please send me a paper map of Doha? Thanks a lot! Have a nice day!

Hi Reuven, If you are in Qatar, you can buy a paper map from any book store or supermarket. If you are outside Qatar, you can buy on Amazon. Good day to you.

Exploring Doha is a must, but the modern capital isn’t the only part of Qatar worth a visit © Maja Topcagic / Stocksy United

The pint-sized nation of Qatar isn’t technically a one-city state, but there’s no denying that Doha , home to more than 90% of Qatar’s population, is the main attraction.

Yet the country’s modern capital isn’t the only corner of this Gulf nation that’s worth a visit. Venture beyond Doha to discover the shiny new sister city Lusail and a pseudo-tropical island escape or strike out into the desert to uncover glimpses of Qatar’s pearling past and unexpected natural wonders.

Here’s a quick guide to the best places for couples, families, or solo travelers to visit around Qatar.

Illuminated traditional houses and people in outdoor restaurants in the historical district of Doha.

See the sights and dine out in Doha

Doha’s rapid transformation from sleepy seaside settlement to glitzy Gulf capital is legendary. As the city’s futuristic skyline continues to expand, so too do reasons to visit, with recent years welcoming the striking National Museum of Qatar , the 3-2-1 Qatar Olympic and Sports Museum , and a gamut of international hotels, with a new metro system making it easier to get around.

Get a taste of Doha’s early days – along with regional culinary specialties – at the fabulously atmospheric Souq Waqif and then stroll along the waterfront Corniche to admire city and Doha Bay views. Marvel at the Museum of Islamic Art (inside and out) and seek out public art, mosques, and more in the Katara cultural village.

The skyscrapers of the newly-developing modern city of Lusail photographed at sunrise

Hop on the metro to visit Lusail

Just 20km (12.4 miles) north of downtown Doha and connected by metro, Lusail feels like an extension of the capital. But this coastal metropolis-in-the-making is actually a city in its own right. While still largely a construction zone, Lusail is already home to some of Qatar’s most striking architecture, notably the nation’s showpiece arena, Lusail Stadium, shaped like a traditional woven bowl; and Katara Towers, which integrates the traditional scimitar swords from the national seal into a pair of 36-story towers housing two luxury hotels. You’ll also find a marina with a pleasant promenade, the high-end Parisian-inspired Place Vendome mall, and more attractions in the making.

With the first line on the Lusail Tram (connected to the Doha Metro) opened in 2022, Lusail is easier than ever to visit via public transport.

Families should save time for Banana Island

Qatar’s only offshore island of note, Banana Island is just a 30-minute catamaran ride from Doha. This small, crescent-shaped isle is occupied entirely by the family-friendly Banana Island Resort Doha by Anantara. Stay in an underwater bungalow and you can (almost) imagine you’re in the Maldives or visit for the day and enjoy the island’s peaceful palm-studded strip of sand. Day passes include boat transfers and credit to spend at the resort’s restaurants and on watersports.

Uncover history at Al Zubarah and Al Jumail

Most people know Al Zubarah for its Unesco-listed fort, but Al Zubarah Fort was named for the thriving pearling port that now lies in ruins between the fort and the sea after being abandoned in the early 20th century. While the ruins are currently closed to the public, you can glimpse the town’s crumbling foundations from the entrance to the handsomely restored fort.

About 20km (12 miles) farther north, turn off the main road to explore the deserted village of Jumail. Founded in the 19th century, the coastal village was also abandoned following the economic boom ignited by Qatar’s oil and gas industries. Al Zubarah is a 90-minute drive northwest of Doha. It can be visited on an organized tour with the likes of 356 Adventures , but you’ll need a car to get to Jumail.

A hut in Al Khor at the end of a bridge that looks over some mangroves

History and nature meet in Al Khor

An hour’s drive north of Doha and accessible by public bus, the small coastal city of Al Khor isn’t much to look at, but it’s home to several attractions that make it worth a brief visit. Chief among them are the three stone watchtowers that stand along the coast. Built around 1900, the towers were used to monitor ships and guard access to the area’s main well, Ain Hleetan, which has also been preserved.

Just beyond Al Khor, a boardwalk takes you through a lush mangrove nature reserve to Bin Ghannam Island (also known as Purple Island), where shell middens have revealed traces of human activity dating back to the 2nd millennium BC. Farther north, the village of Al Thakira is a launchpad for mangrove kayaking tours.

Hit the beach in northeastern Qatar

The largely undeveloped and sparsely populated northeastern corner of Qatar offers a handful of attractions worth checking out if you’re planning to rent a car, beginning with the mysterious Al Jassasiya Rock Carvings near Al Maroona Beach (also known as French Beach), one of Qatar’s most pleasant public beaches. Farther north, Fuwairit Beach is being developed as a kitesurfing destination.

Perched on Qatar’s northeastern tip is Zulal Wellness Resort , a luxe modern retreat guided by traditional Arabic and Islamic medicine and one of the few places to stay in the region. The nearby port town of Al Ruwais lacks notable attractions, but its Shamal Corniche is a scenic spot for a sunset stroll.

Explore desert oddities in Zekreet

The small west coast village of Zekreet is the jumping-off point for visiting the Brouq Peninsula (also known as  Bir Zekreet ), home to attractions including US artist Richard Serra’s gigantic  East–West/West–East installation, which rises up between otherworldly rock formations. You can also check out the Film City ghost town, a recreation of a traditional village built for an Arabic TV series.

But tiny Zekreet, 90km (56 miles) from Doha, has a couple of sights of its own, including a restored historic mosque and Zekreet Fort, thought to have been built in the late 18th or early 19th century. Dismantled for reuse of the stone by local inhabitants, the fort’s foundations are all that remain. Zekreet has a few simple places to eat but nowhere to stay.

Southern Qatar is ready for adventure

The southernmost stop on the Doha Metro, the small city of Al Wakrah has a pleasant seafront souq (market) selling everything from honey, spices, and dates to perfumes and souvenirs. You can also take a stroll around the perimeter of the historic Al Wakra Fort, but it’s not currently open to the public.

From here, you can take a bus or an Uber 30 minutes south to Sealine Beach , one of Qatar’s most popular public beaches, with several dive sites close to the shore. The east coast road ends here, and the towering sand dunes of southern Qatar begin. Book an off-road tour to Khor Al Adaid , which takes you across mountains of sand to Qatar’s “inland sea”, a scenic tidal embayment that marks Qatar’s border with Saudi Arabia.

Similarly to northern Qatar, southern Qatar is typically visited on a day trip from Doha. However, this region has several accommodation options, including Sealine Beach Resort , a lovely spot for couples, and several rustic desert camps if linger.

1. The Best Time to Visit Qatar

If you’re planning a dreamy trip to Qatar, the best time to go is during the cooler winter months from November to March. You’ll love the perfect daytime temperatures of 23°C to 30°C (73°F to 85°F), while the evenings are just as pleasant, ranging from 15°C to 20°C (58°F to 71°F).

This is an ideal time of the year to explore Qatar ‘s natural beauty, soak up the sun on a beach holiday, and get lost in Doha’s stunning architecture and museums. Plus, with the great weather, you can take advantage of thrilling water sports like kitesurfing, diving in the Arabian Gulf , relaxing on the beach, going on a desert safari, or birdwatching in the picturesque Al Thakira mangroves.

2. Things to Do in Qatar

A. if you’re into the arts and culture.

Qatar is a treasure trove for visitors who appreciate the finer things in life. With its rich cultural offerings, you’ll find yourself immersed in world-renowned art museums and the vibrant Katara Cultural Village , a haven for creatives that boasts museums, theaters, and artist studios.

As you explore Doha, be sure to visit the iconic Museum of Islamic Art , a masterpiece by architect I. M. Pei, where you’ll discover 14 centuries of Islamic art from three continents, not to mention some captivating contemporary exhibitions and international collaborations.

Museum of Islamic Art

A 5-minute drive away from the Museum of Islamic Art, the National Museum of Qatar , designed by renowned French architect Jean Nouvel, will leave you speechless with its desert rose-inspired architecture as you dive deep into Qatar’s history and culture through interactive, immersive exhibitions.

b. If you’re into architecture

Architecture aficionados will love the treasures of Qatar’s groundbreaking, sky-puncturing structures. Picture yourself standing beneath the Tornado Tower, its hourglass silhouette reaching toward the sky. Within its 52 floors, this masterpiece houses a bank, a restaurant, and luxury office spaces, each vying for your attention.

The Burj Doha or Doha Tower in Qatar

Your journey continues as you find yourself drawn to the heart of the West Bay business district, where the Burj Doha, also known as Doha Tower, stands tall. The brainchild of Jean Nouvel—yes, the same architect who designed the National Museum—this 238-meter (780-foot) skyscraper is an ode to his creative genius. But the architectural marvels don’t end there.

Doha Skyline, Qatar

Be sure to venture to the Abdullah Bin Zaid Al Mahmoud Islamic Cultural Center, also known simply as Fanar , where you’ll be enveloped in a cultural haven. Displays on Islam, guided tours, and Arabic language classes await you near the bustling Souq Waqif. As you delve deeper into the past, explore historic Al Koot Fort, a museum repurposed from its past lives as a police station and jail that now showcases Qatari handicrafts, paintings, and photos.

The iconic Fanar building, near Souq Waqif

Next, gasp in awe at the Zig Zag Towers , the world’s tallest residential zigzag twin towers, a testament to the ingenuity of the architects and a spectacle for visitors.

Finally, wander through the futuristic streets of Msheireb Downtown, where the past and the present collide in harmony. A sustainable district where traditional Qatari design melds with green technology, this urban marvel boasts the highest concentration of LEED-certified buildings in the world. If you’re wondering what to do in Msheireb , exploring its galleries and museums, its numerous cafes, restaurants and hip stores.

In Qatar, every step you take is a step into a world where architectural wonders abound.

c. If you’re into adventure

As you set foot in Qatar, a land of contrasts, prepare for a whirlwind of adventure that will sweep you off your feet. Let the enchanting landscapes captivate you as the sea reaches out to embrace the desert, the majestic Mesaieed dunes beckoning you to explore their secrets. A dip in the tranquil Inland Sea awaits, offering a soothing reprieve from your arid surroundings.

On a journey to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Khor Al-Adaid , you will see the desert dunes entwine with the sea in an eternal dance. Exhilaration takes center stage as you conquer the sands in a dune buggy rental, try ‘dune bashing’ (a form of off-roading), head out on 4WD escapades, or simply hike or play in the tall dunes.

As you return to civilization, immerse yourself in Qatar’s rich maritime heritage with a serene boat ride on a traditional Qatari fishing vessel, known as a dhow. Glide through the Corniche harbor to witness firsthand the harmonious blend of tradition and modernity.

If you’re eager for more adventure, you can harness the power of the wind as you kite-surf along the Qatar coastline or make a splash on a jet ski. The cool waters of the Arabian Gulf offer respite from the desert heat.

The mangroves in Al Thakira in Qatar

Nature’s wonders continue to unfold before you as you navigate the unique ecosystem of Al Thakira Mangroves in a kayak, a world apart from the desert landscapes you’ve explored.

Finally, in a crescendo of adrenaline, you can take to the skies, skydiving high above Doha and the surrounding desert, your heart racing with the thrill of freefall as the world below stretches out before you.

d. If you’re with your family

As you embark on your family-oriented Qatari adventure, your first stop could be the thrilling Desert Falls Water & Adventure Park , where aquatic and land-based activities captivate the entire family. This place is one of the largest theme parks in the Middle East, with more than 50 rides and 18 attractions. Let your little ones splash around in the pools while older children indulge in laser tag, canyoning, and go-karting.

Next, the exhilarating Quest Theme Park awaits with more than 30 rides and attractions. Marvel at the EpiQ Coaster, the world’s tallest indoor rollercoaster, and plunge into immersive 3D experiences, laser tag, and carnival games.

For an educational yet entertaining experience, don’t miss OliOli , an interactive children’s play museum located in Katara Cultural Village. This captivating and lively indoor play space was created by parents who are enthusiastic about nurturing playfulness and harnessing the potential of creativity.

Haven’t had enough? The Museum of Illusions offers a spellbinding indoor experience with interactive illusions and displays that ignite the imagination.

Finally, stroll through the Pearl-Qatar’s Mediterranean-style marina where world-class restaurants and premium retail offerings will tempt your senses.

You can stop by Megapolis , a family entertainment hub in the Pearl’s Qanat Quartier, and indulge in bowling, car racing simulators, golf simulators, and arcade games. For younger children, Minipolis offers rock wall climbing, inflatable games, and a Lego area, ensuring unforgettable memories for the whole family.

e. If you just want to relax

After exploring the bustling city, it’s time to unwind and relax. Fortunately, there’s no shortage of options to soothe your soul and rejuvenate your body.

One of the best ways to relax is to take a leisurely stroll through one of the city’s parks. The Aspire Park in the middle of Doha boasts the largest lake of the city and is a great place for a relaxing stroll. Alternatively, the Hotel Park in West Bay is a lush green oasis with spectacular skyline views, fountains, and walkways.

If you’re in the mood for a more luxurious experience, the Ali Messila Spa , The Spa: Al Jasra Boutique Hotel , and Jaula Spa and Club at Grand Hyatt Doha each offer an array of treatments to help you unwind. If you’re looking for a beach club experience, Sharq Village is one of the best, especially for families . With private villa rentals and more than 250 treatments, it’s the largest spa in Doha. Meanwhile, The Diplomatic Club offers family-friendly fun with pools, water activities, and kid-friendly dining options. Check the beach club rules for public access.

Finally, the Doha Corniche is a crescent-shaped promenade on the bay that offers marvelous skyline views, which you can admire on a walk from the Sheraton Hotel park to the Museum of Islamic Art park.

3. Where to Eat in Qatar

Whatever your culinary preferences, Qatar has plenty of delightful options to satisfy your cravings. If you’re in the mood for casual Syrian fare, head to Damasca One , where you can enjoy outdoor dining at the vibrant Souq Waqif .

For a more upscale experience, try Parisa , an elegant Persian restaurant that will transport you to another world.

Signature appetizers at Parisa Souq Waqif

If you’re craving Latin American cuisine, you can’t go wrong with Curiosa at the Four Seasons, La Mar , or SushiSamba (Japanese-South American fusion cuisine).

Looking for the newest hotspots? Check out Alba at Raffles or Masala Library at the Fairmont. For dining with an Asian flair, Spice Market at W Doha Hotel offers Southeast Asian-inspired cuisine. Or if you want to indulge in some Wagyu beef and contemporary desserts, CUT by Wolfgang Puck is the place for you. Finally, Hakkasan is a Michelin-starred restaurant offering Cantonese cuisine in Doha.

Now that you’ve got a flavor of what to expect on the dining scene, you may wonder what to drink after your meal. If you want to feel truly local, look no further than the country’s beloved drink, karak tea (also known as karak chai). Introduced in the 1950s by Indian and Pakistani expats, this tea is boiled with milk, sugar, and spices such as cardamom, cinnamon, cloves, or ginger. To enjoy it in the most authentic way, head to Doha’s local cafes or chai houses, where you’ll witness men playing dominoes while sipping on this beloved beverage. Not only is it a cultural experience, but it won’t break the bank, with prices typically no more than 4 QR (about $1 US) per cup. So, take a break from your sightseeing and indulge in the rich flavors of karak tea while soaking up the lively atmosphere of Qatar’s cafes.

4. Where to Stay in Qatar

If you’re planning a trip to Qatar, we recommend basing yourself in Doha for the duration of your stay.

For a traditional Qatari experience as well as for the location, it’s hard to beat the Souq Waqif/Msheireb district. This area boasts traditional architecture, a vibrant atmosphere, and proximity to attractions such as the Museum of Islamic Art. A standout hotel in this area is the Al Najada Doha Hotel by Tivoli, which offers a blend of traditional and modern design, a rooftop infinity pool, and an extensive selection of dining options. An alternative at a slightly cheaper rate – and still under the Tivoli brand – is Najd Boutique Hotel . It is renowned for its luminous spaces adorned with traditional Arabic designs and rich decorative details in its rooms. Plus, it’s located right next to Souq Waqif metro station!

Alternatively, there are many budget-friendly options in the area or nearby.

If you prefer a bustling business district, West Bay is the place. This area is known for its high-rise buildings and landscaped parks, and it’s convenient for both business and leisure travelers. The JW Marriott Marquis City Centre and The Ritz-Carlton, Doha are two excellent hotels in West Bay that offer panoramic views of the city skyline.

The lobby at JW Marriott Marquis City Centre

For a luxurious island escape, consider staying on Banana Island. This secluded, family-friendly island is accessible only by boat or helicopter. The Banana Island Resort Doha by Anantara is a top hotel on the island, offering luxury villas and suites with private pools, a marina, and a nine-hole golf course. The hotel’s spa is exceptional, too, featuring a wide range of treatments and facilities, including a Turkish hammam and an hydrotherapy pool. It’s a great place for families to stay in Qatar .

Another luxurious option is The Pearl, an island district that boasts high-end residential areas, shops, and restaurants as well as a marina and a beach club. The Marsa Malaz Kempinski on Pearl Island has a palatial design inspired by Venetian palazzos, a world-class spa, and dining options with sea views.

5. The Best Ways to Get Around

If you’re planning a trip to Qatar and looking for the best ways to get around, there are a number of options available to you. One of the most technologically advanced and affordable ways to travel is via the Doha Metro. With three lines and modern, dedicated stations, major attractions are easily accessible. The one-way fare is only 2 QAR (0.55 US), and during special events, operating hours are extended. You can purchase a travel card for 10 QAR ($2.75 US) for standard seating or 100 QAR ($27 US) for Gold Club premium seating.

Directions to metro and taxis at Hamad International Airport

Taxis and ride-sharing services like Karwa taxis and Uber are also clean, affordable, and convenient.

For those who prefer eco-friendly options that add a dose of excitement and exercise, there are dedicated cycling areas such as Doha Corniche and Al Bidda Park, where bike rentals are available. Electric scooters can also be rented from Loop Mobility and Falcon Ride .

Finally, you can rent a vehicle, which is an especially good choice if you plan to explore remote attractions. However, this requires confidence in your driving ability in a foreign country and an understanding of local laws. You will also need an international driving license.

6. Local Customs: Dos and Don’ts

When traveling to Qatar, it’s important to respect the local culture and certain customs. Below are some guidelines you need to be mindful of.

a. How to dress

When traveling to Qatar, it is important to respect the local culture, including the dress code. It is usually recommended to wear long and loose-fitting clothes and cover your shoulders and knees to conform to the expectations of tourists in a Muslim country. However, in hotels and certain areas such as The Pearl, the atmosphere tends to be more relaxed, allowing for greater flexibility in your dress code.

While the dress in Doha is more casual than elsewhere in the Middle East, it is still important to be modest. Keep your shoulders and knees covered when visiting religious sites, museums, souks, government buildings, healthcare facilities, and shopping centers. Women should wear a headscarf when entering mosques.

Bathing suits are only permitted in hotel pool areas or on private beaches. To ensure comfort during the summer months, it’s recommended to wear breathable fabrics such as linen, chambray, or cotton, as they help you stay cool and comfortable in the heat, while avoiding heat-retaining materials like rubber, leather, polyester, acrylic, and denim.

At the airport, dress codes are less strict, but wearing clothing that covers most of the body is still recommended for comfort.

b. Can you drink alcohol in Qatar?

While non-Muslims can buy alcohol in designated QDC (Qatar Distribution Company) shops, it is strictly forbidden to drink alcohol in public.

As a tourist, you can enjoy alcohol in bars and restaurants at hotels and tourist complexes, but it’s essential to remember that excessive drinking is not well-received. It’s also prohibited to drink alcohol in residential areas or public areas outside of authorized hotels and restaurants.

c. Can you take photos of locals in Qatar?

While exploring Qatar, just as you’d expect in many other countries, keep in mind that local people might not appreciate being photographed without their consent—especially women. But who knows? If you do ask for permission to take a photo, it could lead to a meaningful conversation and a deeper understanding of Qatari culture.

d. What is it like to travel as a couple in Qatar?

While hand-holding is acceptable, public displays of affection such as kissing, hugging, and cuddling are prohibited. Gender segregation is prevalent in public spaces, with separate queues and waiting areas for men and women. Women-only beaches and parks have designated “ladies’ days,” and it’s essential to follow rules and signs for “ladies only” or “women only” spaces.

e. Should you tip in restaurants in Qatar?

While there are no rigid regulations regarding gratuities, tourists are expected to tip in Doha, particularly if they are satisfied with the service provided. In Qatar, it’s considered courteous to offer a small gratuity to waiters and other staff members. A tip of 10-15 percent is generally appropriate for restaurants, cafes, and bars, while a gratuity of 5-10 QAR ($1.37-$2.75 US) is expected for taxi drivers and gas station attendants.

f. When is the weekend in Qatar?

In Qatar, the weekend falls on Friday and Saturday, with the workweek running from Sunday to Thursday. On Fridays, many establishments close temporarily between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. for congregational prayers, including the metro in Doha, which only runs from 2 p.m. to midnight on Fridays.

Similarly, restaurants, cafes, and museums don’t open until 1 or 2 p.m. on Fridays, and two of the city’s most popular attractions, the Museum of Islamic Art and Souq Waqif, are closed on Friday mornings. On Saturdays, these places generally operate with regular hours. If you plan to visit Qatar on a Friday, be sure to structure your itinerary around these restricted hours and plan accordingly.

Even if you have a short stopover of fewer than 24 hours, though, you can still enjoy the city’s world-class museums, impressive malls, and dazzling skyline.

If you’re flying with Qatar Airways and plan to stay one to four nights, be sure to check out their stopover deals for a discounted stay in four- or five-star hotels. Qatar offers one of the most flexible entry systems in the Middle East. More than 95 countries, including most European countries, can enter Qatar visa-free for a stay of up to 90 days! 3. Is Qatar safe for solo female travelers?

16 things to know before travelling to Qatar - Doha, Qatar

Qatar is set to host the 2022 FIFA World Cup from 21 Nov 2022 to 18 Dec 2022. Before you go, here are the top 16 things to know

Qatar is made for every traveller. Its capital, Doha, blends traditional souks and gleaming malls effortlessly. Beyond Doha, Qatar rewards visitors with its fair share of natural beauty – massive sand dunes and pristine sandy beaches are worthy diversions. Here are 16 things you must know before travelling to Qatar.

1. Qatar is the richest country in the world

Almost rectangular in shape, Qatar sits in a peninsula jutting out into the Arabian Gulf between Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates. It shares land borders with Saudi Arabia. An independent emirate since 1971, Qatar has substantial oil and gas reserves and is currently the richest country in the world.

2. Many airlines fly to Qatar

3. Qatar can be expensive, but it can also be affordable

As you would expect, luxurious hotels and Michelin-star restaurants in Doha do command top prices. You can easily spend a few hundred US dollars for a night in one of the swanky hotels and splash out to dine like royalty.

Thankfully, Qatar has options for budget travellers too. You can get a room for US$60 a night in December (at the start of the peak season) in a service apartment or a small hotel away from the city centre. As for meals, you may spend an average of US$5 a day if you opt for budget restaurants or food courts.

4. Qatar is refreshingly tolerant

Qatar is an Islamic country observing many traditional customs, but it is also refreshingly tolerant. Expats working in Qatar are free to worship in churches and temples. While female visitors do not need to wear a hijab (headscarf) or abaya (full-length black cloak), they do need to dress modestly by covering shoulders and knees. Bikinis and beachwear are acceptable at the hotel pool but not in public places.

5. Alcohol is allowed in certain places

Qatar does allow alcohol to be served in hotel bars and licensed restaurants. However, visitors must not carry any alcohol into the country and drinking in public is prohibited.

6. Getting around is easy

Karwa taxis are widely available and reasonably priced. You can order it via the Karwa app or call for service. In addition, you can also hire a private vehicle through ride-sharing apps such as Careem and Uber. If you intend to visit Khor Al Adaid (Inland Sea), best book an overnight tour that allows you to enjoy the breath-taking sunset and sunrise.

Doha also has a metro network with three lines – Red, Green and Gold. The Red Line connects Hamad International Airport to the city centre.

Doha is the cultural and economic hub of Doha. Corniche, the 7km (4 miles) long waterfront is a tourist hotspot, offering great viewpoints, open lawns and a harbour where you can hop on a dhow cruise.

The Pearl, a man-made island on the banks of the Arabian Gulf, is another tourist hotspot. The Qanat Quartier within the Pearl is modelled after Venice with canals running through piazzas and pastel-coloured buildings.

8. Qatar has a thriving art scene

The Museum of Islamic Art in Doha is a must-see. This beautifully-designed museum has a vast collection of paintings, glassworks, ceramics, textiles and ancient manuscripts. Mathaf (Arab Museum of Modern Art), located in Doha’s Education City, is another gem with over 6,000 pieces of art. Both museums are linked by a shuttle service.

9. It has a fair share of natural beauty

From the large expense of Al Thakira mangroves in the north, salt flats (sabkha) along the coast and massive sand dunes in the south, Qatar has stunning natural wonders to offer. Khor Al Adaid (Inland Sea), where the sea and the surrounding large tidal embayment spill into the desert, is definitely a highlight.

10. Nationals from 87 countries can visit without a visa

Nationals from 87 countries can visit Qatar without a visa for up to 30 days or 90 days, depending on your nationality. See the full list of countries in our Qatar visa and passport requirements page .

Visa waiver is issued on arrival, upon presenting your valid passport (which must have a minimum validity of six months) plus a confirmed onward or return ticket.

11. Tap water is safe to drink

While coffee, karak chai (strong tea) and fresh juices are widely available, you can also drink tap water in Doha and other urban areas. When you’re out in the desert, bottled water is a sensible option.

12. Food is varied

Qatari food takes inspirations from the Indian Subcontinent, Iran, the Levant and North Africa. Machboos, a stew of mutton or seafood served with yogurt, is hugely popular. International dishes are widely available in most hotels too.

13. Best time to go

Qatar has two seasons: hot (May to October) and cool (December to February). March, April and November are transitional months. The best time to visit Qatar is during the cool period (December to February) when temperatures are mild, with average highs ranging between 22°C (72°F) and 25°C (77°F).

14. Heatstroke is a health risk during the hot season

As the mercury soars during the hot season, it is possible to get heatstroke. While you can still enjoy the outdoors, it is best to cover the head, stay hydrated and avoid vigorous physical activities at midday.

15. Qatari Riyal is the currency

Qatari Riyal is the currency and is pegged to the US dollar at an average rate of US$1 = QR3.64. ATMs are widely available so it is easy to withdraw money locally.

16. It faces economic and diplomatic embargo from its neighbours

Accusing Qatar of supporting terrorism including Hamas and the Muslim Brotherhood, Qatar’s neighbours (Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Egypt and the United Arab Emirates) imposed an economic and diplomatic embargo on Qatar in June 2017. The embargo had a major impact as more than half of Qatar’s imports came through these countries, forcing Qatar to source its food supplies from Iran and other countries, as well as ramping up domestic production. For example, Al Khor, a city in northern Qatar, now has a huge dairy farm to ensure milk supplies remain uninterrupted.

Qatar Travel Tips: 19 Useful Things to Know Before You Visit Doha

Considering a stopover in Doha or planning your first visit to Qatar for the FIFA World Cup? This list of 19 incredibly useful Qatar travel tips covers everything from dress code and rules for couples, to budgeting, and how to move around the city.

In many respects, Qatar is a closed book.

Before I decided to sign up for a layover in Doha , I knew very little about this tiny oil-rich Islamic country in the Persian Gulf. Like many travellers before me, it was precisely this sense of the ‘unknown’ that lured me to visit Doha – that, and the promise of fragrant souqs, harbours crowded with dhow boats and men parading the streets with falcons perched on their wrists instead of Rolex watches.

What is it like to travel in the richest country in the world per capita, where more than 85% of the local population are expats or migrant workers?

Most people’s experience of Qatar will be like mine: A somewhat superficial brush with a small but socially complex country on an extended layover. For practical reasons, Qatar is a great place to break up a long flight (the trip from Australia to Georgia , for example).

Even if your visit is fleeting (heck, even if you’re not planning to leave the airport), there are certain things you should know about Qatar in advance to make your experience in this beautiful Middle Eastern nation smoother and more enjoyable.

From what to wear, to which day of the week to avoid and a few sure-fire tips to save money, here are 19 incredibly useful Qatar travel tips to help you prepare for your visit.

19 practical qatar travel tips, 1. a qatar airways stopover is the easiest way to organise your doha visit.

If you want a taste of Doha, you can squeeze a lot into a 24 or 48-hour layover .

In an effort to encourage more people to travel with the national carrier and break-up their journey in Doha, Qatar’s tourism board introduced a program to incentivise extended layovers. Booked through Qatar Airways , a stopover can take a lot of the hassle out of organising a trip.

It works like this: Choose your airfares to and from Doha (they must be with Qatar Airways, and you must leave a minimum gap of 12 hours between flights). You’ll then be eligible for a ‘free stopover’ of 1-4 nights. Benefits include a heavy discount on a selection of 4 and 5-star hotels , and a free transit visa (if you need one).

If your stopover is shorter (6-12 hours), you can opt for a discounted Doha transit tour instead.

2. The climate is extreme, so time your visit wisely

Remember when Qatar was first named host country for the 2022 FIFA World Cup? Most newscasters’ first reaction was to point to the absolute unsuitability of the climate for outdoor sports.

Qatar has a desert climate – hot and dry are the imperative words here. But that doesn’t mean it’s sweltering year-round.

Cool season (December through February) is mild, with temperatures averaging 14-25 Celsius most days. Desert gusts are tempered, skies are clear, and rainfall is minimal, giving Doha a spring-like atmosphere. This is by the far the best time to visit Qatar (and for the record, this is when the World Cup will take place, too).

With that in mind, Qatar is certainly not a place you want to visit in the peak summer months. May through September is much warmer, with max temperatures hovering around the low 40s. July, traditionally the hottest month of the year, should be avoided at all costs. It’s not unusual for the mercury to soar to 43 Celsius in June, July and August.

You should also consider whether your visit will coincide with the Holy Month of Ramadan . Qatar is an Islamic nation, and majority of people observe the 30 days of fasting and prayer. Under Sharia Law, it is illegal to eat or drink in public in Doha during Ramadan. Most cafes and restaurants close during the day, while shops, museums and the souq all observe restricted hours.

Other rules, such as dress code , are more strictly enforced during the Holy Month.

3. Doha is surprisingly affordable

The official currency in Qatar is the Qatari riyal (QAR) . Like in neighbouring Oman , it’s relatively easy to make your money stretch further. We drew up a rough budget and withdrew cash on our first day in Doha (ATMs, by the way, are ubiquitous, and most venues accept payment by credit card). This was one of the rare times we over-estimated our spend and had to change most our riyals back into USD at the airport.

In the end, we spent around 40 USD per person per day on food and transport in Doha. That was enough to cover three solid meals, a few trips on the metro, and tickets for the Museum of Islamic Arts.

Food portions are huge, so you can easily save money by sharing meals. The metro is cheaper than taking a taxi (more on that later), and you can save even more cash by avoiding ticketed attractions (our biggest expense by far, aside from accommodation, was museums).

4. Tipping is customary, but not mandatory

There are no hard and fast rules about tipping in Qatar – but it is increasingly expected in Doha, especially from tourists.

If you’re happy with the service, it is considered polite to offer waiters and other staff a small gratuity. Generally speaking, 10-15% is acceptable for restaurants, cafes and bars, while you should aim to tip your taxi driver or gas station attendant 5-10 QAR.

15 essential Qatar travel tips to know before visiting Doha – including dress codes, rules for foreigners, how much to budget and how to get around.

5. Doha shuts down on Friday mornings

Friday prayers, or Salat al-Jumu’ah , are an obligatory religious ritual in Qatar. Walking around on a Friday morning, Doha can feel like a ghost town as most people are busy attending mosque.

Restaurants, cafes and museums don’t open until 1pm or 2pm on Fridays . Two of the city’s most popular attractions, the Museum of Islamic Art and Souq Waqif, are both closed on Friday mornings. If your Qatar layover falls on a Friday, keep in mind that you’ll have to structure your itinerary around these restricted hours.

Also bear in mind that the Doha metro doesn’t start running until 2pm on Fridays.

6. There is a dress code when you visit Doha

Much like rules for couples, there seems to be tension between official policy and public consensus when it comes to the dress code in Doha.

From my observations, locals and expats in Doha tend to dress modestly in their daily life. Long, loose-fitting clothing seems to be the preferred style. As Qatar is a Muslim country, tourists are generally expected to cover their shoulders and knees at a minimum (although I did see a few short skirts and spaghetti tops on the street during my visit).

Showing too much skin in public places is frowned upon. Swimsuits are only allowed in hotel pool areas or on private beaches , and are forbidden on public beaches.

The rules are of course a lot stricter if you’re visiting a mosque or religious site . You won’t be permitted entry to a mosque unless you’re covered up and wearing a scarf over your hair (women). It surprised me to learn that you might be denied entry to the Museum of Islamic Art if your shoulders and knees aren’t covered. This is the only place I’m aware of that imposes such restrictions.

The dress code at the airport is more liberal, but I still recommend carrying a light cardigan and wearing long pants if you’re transiting through Doha and want to feel more comfortable.

The consequences for donning inappropriate attire range from awkward stares from locals through to be removed from a venue by security or even being fined by police. Dress codes are more strictly enforced during Ramadan. Needless to say, small towns and rural areas are more conservative, so you should always dress modestly outside Doha .

7. Arabic is the official language, but English is widely spoken

Being a former British protectorate, English is widely spoken in Qatar. Arabic is the nation’s official language for daily use, but when it comes to business, trade and official procedures, English is the go-to.

You’ll find that most Qataris speak English, especially those who work in tourism. We had no issues getting around with English only.

8. It’s perfectly safe to visit Doha as a (solo) woman

Provided you dress appropriately and avoid certain behaviours such as drinking in public (more on that later), Doha is a perfectly safe place for solo female travellers .

Crime rates are very low in Doha across the board, which is why it’s constantly ranked among the top 3 safest cities in the world . Streets are well-lit at night, and apart from the odd overexcited taxi driver, there’s not really a ‘hassle culture’ in Doha. You won’t be approached in the souq, for instance.

One thing you should be aware of is ‘men-only’ establishments – tea houses and restaurants that are closed off to Qatari ladies and foreign women alike (this should be pretty obvious if there’s only dudes around). Most public spaces are of course mixed, but some restaurants and cafes have special ‘family areas’ for women and children. The Doha metro has family carriages if you want to sit with other females.

Here are more tips for visiting Doha as a solo female traveller .

9. There are particular rules for couples

If you’re travelling to Qatar as a couple, there are particular local laws and social customs to be aware of.

Until recently, unmarried couples were prohibited from sharing a hotel room. This rule seems to have been relaxed in recent years, at least for foreign tourists. According to recent reports, it still applies to Qatari couples and expats living in the country.

This was our experience: We booked a hotel room in Doha under my husband’s name. Despite having different surnames in our passports, we weren’t asked to explain the nature of our relationship. We were married at the time (this was actually our honeymoon), so we weren’t particularly concerned – I had a copy of our marriage certificate ready to show if needed.

If this is something you’re worried about, try sticking to international hotel chains (for example, the InterContinental) or just email your accommodation in advance to double check the house policy.

Homosexuality is illegal in Qatar, but it’s not unusual for men (for example, business travellers) to share a hotel room. See here for more information and advice about queer travel in the Middle East .

Public displays of affection (including hand-holding) are illegal in Qatar.

Arched buildings in the souq in Doha.

10. Some hostels are single-gender

If you’re booking a hostel in Doha, make sure you check whether it’s gender-separated . Some hostels only offer men’s dorms (for example, Casper Hostel ), while T Ladies Hostel is female-only. To make things confusing, the policy isn’t always obvious at first.

Q Hostel offers both men’s and women’s dorms – but no hostel in Qatar offers mixed dorms. Couples, therefore, may be better off upgrading to a mid-range hotel.

A final note on accommodation in Doha: Airbnb is legal in Qatar and can be an affordable alternative to a hotel. You can find some beautiful self-contained apartments with sea views around The Pearl, and simpler private rooms near the souq.

11. Qatar is incredibly multicultural

Another thing that surprised me about Qatar is that 85.7% of the population is made up of expats . India, Bangladesh and Nepal are the top three countries represented.

As a visitor, you feel Qatar’s cultural diversity on several levels. Firstly, the plurality of faces on the street is obvious and gives Doha a cosmopolitan feel. Travellers also benefit from an incredibly rich food scene , including some great Indian and Yemeni restaurants.

But you can’t ignore the fact that many of these workers are low-paid (or unpaid) labourers . As far as I know, forced labour isn’t directly related to the tourism industry in Qatar, but it’s still something to keep in mind when you’re visiting Doha.

The ILO is a great resource for information on this topic.

12. Qatari culture is relatively accessible

Gulf nations like the United Arab Emirates are known for flashy developments and high-rise buildings. But Qatar is a little closer to Oman in terms of local culture. Downtown Doha is quite modern, but it’s clear that the government has gone to great lengths to ensure preservation of local culture in the architecture.

Despite the fact that it’s reconstructed, Souq Waqif still appears true to style. The Falcon Market is the perfect place to experience one of Qatar’s most beloved local customs, falconry.

My advice is to skip the shiny shopping malls and stick to traditional markets.

13. Doha is home to one of the world’s most sustainable city districts

One of the first things that strikes you about Doha is how new and polished everything feels. There are grungy corners, yes – but for the most part, even the oldest parts of the city (including the souq) have been entirely reconstructed.

This has pros and cons. On the downside, Doha lacks the gritty charm and ‘rustic authenticity’ of Muscat , for example.

On the plus side, when you re-build a city from scratch, the only limit is your imagination. In the case of Msheireb, one of Doha’s oldest districts, planners envisaged a futuristic, sustainable city when they went about revitalising the area.

Msheireb Downtown combines traditional Qatari design with green technology. The district has the highest concentration of LEED-Certified buildings in the world . Streets are laid out to catch the Gulf breeze and shade walking routes and windows, limiting the need for air conditioning.

The whole area is solar powered and planted out with native flora. Massive underground car parks have been installed to limit traffic and encourage people to walk or cycle.

Pretty neat, huh?

A cup of tea on a red tablecloth.

14. Qatar is a tea-drinking nation

Skip the water, skip the booze: Grab a tea instead.

Tea is ubiquitous in Doha, and enjoying a cuppa or two (or three) at a local cafe or chai house is a must-do for every visitor. In the mornings, you can find groups of men sitting around playing dominoes and sipping short glasses of bubbly, brick-coloured karak tea .

Karak was introduced to Qatar by Indian and Pakistani expats in the 1950s. A version of Masala Chai, karak is a heady brew of tea, milk, sugar and spices boiled low and slow for maximum flavour. The traditional Qatari version contains only cardamom , but cinnamon, cloves or ginger may also be added.

A cup of karak typically costs 1-4 QAR depending on the establishment.

15. You should avoid drinking tap water (and alcohol)

Qatar isn’t a dry country, but alcohol is strictly regulated . Booze served in hotels is subject to a ‘sin tax’ and expensive as a result. If you’re serious about saving money, avoid drinking.

There is conflicting information online, but the general consensus is that you shouldn’t drink the tap water in Doha. Drinking fountains around mosques and on the Corniche should also be avoided, particularly if you have a sensitive stomach.

Apart from being a terrible blight on the environment, there are also concerns over imported bottled water in Qatar containing higher than normal levels of arsenic. The easiest solution is to carry a Steripen or LifeStraw and purify your own water .

16. It takes a ridiculously long time to cross the street

Walking around Doha can be a strange experience. First of all, pavements are usually deserted (especially in the middle of the day) as most people opt to drive.

One peculiarity we noticed is the time it takes to cross the street. Every intersection is fitted with lights and pedestrian crossings in a bid to control heavy traffic in the inner-city. These run on a ‘smart system’ that uses sensors to detect cars and direct flows.

As a result, it’s not uncommon to have to wait 10 minutes or more to cross the street in Doha. But wait you must – drivers are unpredictable, speeding is common, and jaywalkers face fines of up to $140.

A red and white street sign in Doha, Qatar.

17. There are construction sites everywhere!

Like many other Middle Eastern countries in the Gulf Region, parts of Qatar and especially Doha do feel like one big construction site.

New power plants, expressways, stadiums and apartment blocks are mushrooming in every corner of the city, and this does mean that some streets are dusty and noisy as a result. Take care when you’re walking around Doha, and if you’re a particularly light sleeper, it might be worth checking if your accommodation is close to a worksite.

18. Metro is the best way to get around

If you prefer not to walk, you can always take an Uber . But the most cost-effective way to move around Doha is using the city’s relatively new underground metro system.

Completed in May 2019, it’s one of the fastest driverless trains in the world. Departures are frequent, it’s very easy to navigate, and most major tourist attractions (including the Corniche, the museum and Katara Cultural Centre) have dedicated ultra-modern stations.

Best of all, a one-way metro fare costs just 2 QAR . Single tickets can be bought from machines inside the stations – no cards or top-ups necessary.

There are three metro lines: The north-south red line (handy for getting to Katara Cultural Village), and the east-west gold and blue lines. Running hours are still being negotiated, but at the time of writing, the metro runs from 6am until 11pm Saturday to Wednesday, from 6am until midnight on Thursdays, and from 2pm until midnight on Fridays.

In December 2019, the metro expanded to include a stop at Doha’s international airport , making this an efficient way to get into the city when you first arrive in Qatar.

19. You need a car to explore beyond the city

Public transport within Doha is efficient and affordable. But if you want to explore beyond the city centre, you’re going to need a car.

Here, you have two options: Either hire your own wheels and self-drive – the easiest way to explore on. your own terms – or join an accompanied tour . A day tour is the best way to go if you have limited time in Doha and you want to see something specific (such as the Inland Sea or Zakreet).

If you have more time and want the freedom to seek out far-flung sand dunes and coastal fishing villages, consider renting a car at Hamad International Airport . All major companies are represented. I suggest using Discover Cars to find the best price on a rental for your dates and requirements.

Qatar is a signatory of the United Nations convention and thus it is a legal requirement for all foreigners to present a valid International Driving Permit (IDP) when hiring a car. Driving in Qatar is fairly straightforward, but for safety reasons, it’s best to limit your driving to daylight hours.

Where to stay in Doha

We stayed at Saraya Corniche for 2 nights during our Doha stopover. Our room was comfortable but a little dated – however, we really loved the central location walking distance from the waterfront and souq.

If we had our time again, we would choose either the InterContinental or Souq Waqif Boutique Hotel . The latter is set right in the heart of the souq and features roomier, more luxe suites than Saraya.

If you’re on a shorter layover and you prefer to stay near the airport, Oryx Transit Hotel is the top choice.

Everything You Need To Know About Visiting Qatar

  • Travel Tips

Twenty-two years ago, I moved to Qatar for the first time. Then, I had no idea where in the world this country was located, nor did my bewildered family. My husband had been offered a position there and our move set off an avalanche of worldwide relocations that have currently come full circle, with us living in Doha, Qatar, for a second time.

But what a change these last 20 years have brought. Qatar is currently on every sports fan’s mind, with the FIFA World Cup coming in November. Many people have been through the Hamad International Airport, voted Best Airport in the World, transiting between east and west, while a recent tourism boom has brought many visitors to these shores, arriving either by plane or cruise ship.

Still, ask most people, and Qatar remains a bit of an unknown. So, here I will tackle some of the most often asked questions, to give you some background on this small desert state in the Middle East.

Where Is Qatar Located?

Look closely to the east of the vast Saudi Arabian Peninsula, and you’ll see a tiny thumb-shaped protrusion sticking out into the Arabian Gulf, or Persian Gulf. Directly bordered only by Saudi Arabia, the island state of Bahrain lies just to the north, and the United Arab Emirates to the south.

What Is Qatar Known For?

In brief, Qatar is the world’s third richest country according to GDP per capita, has vast gas and oil reserves, and will be hosting the FIFA soccer World Cup in November 2022. The small country initially made its wealth from pearl diving and the pearl trade. Today, Qatar is emerging as one of the most important art destinations in the Middle East, with world-renowned artists having public art installations here, from Richard Serra to Damien Hirst.

What Types Of Food Do People Eat In Qatar?

The cuisine of Qatar is, to put it simply, a mix of influences ranging from India to Lebanon, with rice, chicken, and lamb dishes being the most popular, such as Machboos , a richly spiced but not spicy rice dish. There is a great range of seafood, with hamour being a lovely white grouper that is not much known outside the region, and there is always a selection of honey-dripping sweets. The favorite local breakfast is a simple karak (ginger spiced milky tea) and chapati , an Indian flatbread. But in Doha , you will find restaurants from every corner of the world, with options ranging from celebrity chef restaurants to tiny fresh juice stalls and food trucks.

How To Get Around Qatar?

To explore the country, a car, or organized tour , is essential because once outside of the capital, the desert takes over. And without a car, you can only reach so far. Within Doha, a modern metro system takes you around, connecting most main parts of the capital, including the airport, stopping along places such as the Corniche, a 5-mile-long promenade along Doha Bay. Within certain inner city neighborhoods, such as Souq Waqif or the design district of Msheireb, you are best advised to explore on foot, while for other city journeys, there are taxis and Ubers available.

What Is The Currency In Qatar?

The currency is the Qatari Riyal, abbreviated to QR or QAR. One riyal, divided into 100 dirhams, is roughly equivalent to $0.27 USD, but all international cards are accepted in the majority of locations. The notes come in denominations of QAR1, QAR5, QAR10, QAR50, QAR100, QAR200, and QAR500. There are ATMs in the airport allowing you to have a bit of cash on hand for tips and small purchases.

What Are Some Of The Cultural Customs In Qatar?

Qatar is a Muslim country, and as such, both men and women should dress modestly. That means covering the shoulders and wearing clothes that reach the knee. You will see plenty of young people wearing tank tops and shorts, but if you intend to visit places where you can expect to meet locals, then it is simply polite to cover up a little. In some cases, you might even not be allowed entry if not dressed suitably. On the hotel beaches and in the pools, bikinis and swimming shorts are absolutely fine.

Traditionally, you should only eat food with your right hand, the left being used for more unsavory toilet business. You should also not sit in a way that you show the soles of your feet to locals, nor should you ever decline an offer of food or drink. That said, people are aware that you are foreign, and are very flexible and forgiving. Where eating with only the right hand is concerned, watch any local eating a burger, and that rule goes straight out of the window.

What Is The Weather Like?

Honestly? It gets very hot. My advice is not to visit during June or the end of September, as temperatures easily reach 122 degrees Fahrenheit in the shade, and the humidity is very high, making it at times unbearable. In the summer, people rarely move outside, only in their air-conditioned cars to go to air-conditioned stores, with many families simply leaving in summer when school is out.

In the spring and fall, as well as in the winter, the weather is beautiful, with a breeze coming in from the sea and the whole country bursting into outdoor life. Officially, there is a rainy season between December and March, but that tends to last 1–2 days max. The rain often comes in January, when the heavens can open for a couple of hours. But the “rainy season” should not put you off at all, as the rain is mostly made up of 10 drops that don’t even join up on the ground.

Is It Safe?

Qatar is very safe; indeed, it has repeatedly been nominated the safest country in the world. Crime rates are extremely low, as is harassment and theft. I have always felt safe walking on my own or taking a taxi at night. That said, there is always an exception, and all you need is one bad case, so normal common sense precautions should always be taken.

Can I Drink Alcohol There?

Unlike Saudi Arabia, Qatar is not a “dry” country, but access to alcohol is limited mostly to the large international hotels, and the restaurants and bars inside those hotels. You will not be able to import alcohol or buy it in supermarkets, nor anywhere else, unless you are a resident and have been approved for a liquor license. Alcohol in the hotels is not cheap (with a 12-ounce beer costing around QAR40, or $10 USD), but you can get everything from champagne to spirits.

Are Women Allowed To Drive?

Yes, women are not restricted in any way. Women can rent a car on arrival, and there is even a limousine service driven by women for women. Women do not have to cover up, apart from wearing modest dress (see more below). Qatar is a safe country for female solo travelers.

Are There Religious Restrictions?

The most important factor to bear in mind is the holy month of Ramadan. This month, the timing of which changes by around 10–12 days each year, is the most important in the Muslim calendar. Throughout Ramadan, it is forbidden, even for non-Muslims, to eat and drink, or smoke and chew gum, in public between the hours of sunrise and sunset. Most restaurants, apart from a selection in most hotels, are closed during the day, and store timings change as well, with many shutting down during certain times and staying open late into the night. Ramadan can be an interesting, but inconvenient time to visit the country.

What Is There To Do?

While often touted as a brief stopover destination, there is in fact a lot to see and do in Qatar. Explore the desert, preferably via 4WD, hurtling up and down the sand dunes. Then, shop up a storm in the many super-fancy malls. There is the lovely Souq Waqif, a traditional bazaar, where you get anything from a falcon to bales of silk, spices to pretty trinkets, and plenty of gold jewelry. There are world-class museums, such as the Museum of Islamic Art and the National Museum of Qatar , and countless art galleries, many of which can be found in the Katara Cultural Village.

What Are Some Key Arabic Phrases?

While everybody speaks English in Qatar, because it is the common language between more than 100 nationalities living and working there, it is always appreciated if you try to use a few local phrases when, for example, in the souq.

The most common greeting is Salam-Alaikum , which is answered with Alaikum Salam , both meaning “peace be with you.” “Good Morning” is Sabah al Khair , while a simple “hello” is Hala or Ahlan . “How are you?” is Kheef Halak ? and “goodbye” is Massalama . “Please” is Min Fadlak and “Thank you” is Shukran , while “Yes” is Aiwa , and “No” is La .

Pro Tip: Weekends In Qatar

Please note that the weekend here falls on Friday and Saturday, with Sunday being a working day. So, if you want to go for one of those bottomless brunches, which are very popular in Doha, book it for Friday.

The Pigeon Towers are stunning sand-colored columns found within the Katara Cultural Village.

These ancient structures, which were used for centuries to house pigeons, are a perfect example of Islamic architectural ingenuity. They were used by farmers to rise pigeons in order to collect their droppings for fertilizer, or for meat and eggs.

The towers are now an important part of Qatar’s cultural heritage. The towers are both beautiful and functional, with each one capable of accommodating thousands of pigeons. Read all about how to visit the Pigeon Towers here .

I couldn’t wait to see them strictly for their architectural beauty. I recommend visiting at sunrise or sunset for the best golden hour glow.

The geometric design of the Museum of Islamic Art, one of the best Places To Visit in Doha, Qatar.

The Museum of Islamic Art (MIA) is housed in a stunning cube-like geometric design right on the water. The architect I. M. Pei specified that the museum must be built on an artificial peninsula near the traditional dhow harbor.

Inside, MIA is even more incredible. It holds Islamic art from across three continents, including old manuscripts, intricate metalwork, colorful textiles, and much more.

The artifacts date from the 7th century through the 20th century, and this is one of the most complete collections of Islamic artifacts in the world. You can’t miss it!

The Islamic Cultural Center, one of the best Places To Visit in Doha, Qatar.

9. Islamic Cultural Center

Across from Souq Waqif, you will likely notice a spiral shaped building towering up into the sky. This is the Sheikh Abdulla Bin Zaid Al Mahmoud Islamic Cultural Centre, or, Fanar.

Fanar was once the largest mosque in Qatar. And while it still functions as a place for prayer, this building also hosts religious and educational activities, even for visitors.

Tourists can learn about the Qatari lifestyle and history as well as try local coffee. Etiquette and courses on the Islamic faith are also available. But hands down, my top recommendation is to visit during Friday prayers.

100% of the mosques I have visited, even the heavily touristic  Sheik Zayed Grand Mosque  in Abu Dhabi, are strictly closed to visitors during prayer times. And understandably so.

Here, even non-Muslim visitors can attend Friday prayers led in English to learn about this deep and moving tradition.

Hours: Visit. 7.30am – 10pm. The welcome desk is open 7.30am – 1.30pm and 4pm – 10pm. Fees: Dependent upon which activities you choose.

The intricate details on the National Museum of Qatar, one of the best Places To Visit in Doha, Qatar.

10. National Museum of Qatar

One of the can’t-miss things to do in Doha is a visit to the National Museum of Qatar. The museum offers an immersive experience that takes visitors through the history of the region, from prehistoric times to the present day.

With interactive exhibits, stunning artwork, and informative displays, there is something for everyone at this world-class museum.

The architecture of the building itself is impressive, resembling a desert rose that blends seamlessly into the surrounding landscape. Whether you are a history buff or just like to learn, a visit to the national Museum of Qatar will not disappoint.

The rustic exterior of a shop at the Falcon Souq, one of the best Places To Visit in Doha, Qatar.

Qatari Emir Al-Thani arriving on two-day Nepal visit

Qatari Emir Al-Thani arriving on two-day Nepal visit

Post Report

Emir of Qatar Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani is arriving in Kathmandu on Tuesday on a two-day Nepal visit.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs in a statement on Sunday said the Qatari Emir is paying a visit to Nepal on an invitation by President Ramchandra Paudel.

Emir Al-Thani will meet President Paudel on Tuesday and attend a state banquet hosted in his honour.

He will hold bilateral talks with Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal on Wednesday. Following the talks, both leaders will witness the signing ceremony of bilateral agreements and memorandums of understanding, the foreign ministry said.

His earlier Nepal visit schedule of November 6 and 7 last year was postponed due to emerging tensions in the Middle East, followed by the clash between Israel and Hamas militants.

Qatar is considered a prime labour destination for Nepalis. Two former presidents—Ram Baran Yadav and Bidya Devi Bhandari—paid state visits to Qatar, in response to a series of high-level visits from the emirate. This is the highest-level visit from Qatar after the two countries established diplomatic relations in 1977.

Officials told the Post that at least nine agreements will be signed during the visit focused on development cooperation between Nepal and Qatar.

Nepal’s president asks visiting Qatari emir to help free student held hostage by Hamas

  • Copy Link copied

KATHMANDU, Nepal (AP) — Nepal’s president asked the emir of Qatar, who is on a two-day visit to the South Asian country, to help release a Nepali student held hostage by Palestinian militant group Hamas, officials said on Wednesday.

President Ram Chandra Poudel met with Sheik Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani at the president’s house in the capital, Kathmandu.

Al Thani said he would do everything possible to help release Bipin Joshi, the Nepali president’s press advisor, Kiran Pokharel, told The Associated Press.

Joshi was among 17 Nepali students studying agriculture in Alumim kibbutz, near the Gaza Strip, when Hamas attacked Southern Israel on Oct.7. Ten of the students were killed, six injured while Joshi was abducted and taken to Gaza.

Though there has been no information on his condition or whereabouts, Nepali officials said they believed he was still alive.

Hamas’ sudden attack on Israel in October killed 1,200 people and some 250 others hostage were taken hostage. This has sparked a war that has so far killed more than 34,000 Palestinians in Gaza, at least two-thirds of them women and children, according to the local health ministry.

Nepal's President Ram Chandra Poudel checks his watch as he and Minister of Foreign Affairs Narayan Kaji Shrestha, wait for Qatar's Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al arrival at Tribhuvan international airport in Kathmandu, Nepal, Tuesday, April 23, 2024. Qatar has played a key intermediary role throughout the war in Gaza. Along with the U.S. and Egypt, the Gulf State was instrumental in helping negotiate a brief halt to the fighting in November that led to the release of dozens of hostages.

Pokharel also said the emir discussed the conditions of an estimated 400,000 Nepali migrant workers residing in Qatar, who mostly work in construction and manual labor. Concerns about working in extreme heat — that could reach over 40 C (104 F) — inadequate living facilities and abuse have risen in recent years.

Human Rights Watch released a statement on Sunday, asking that labor protection for migrant workers be prioritized during the emir’s visit.

The emir said there were programs planned to help Nepali workers find employment in other sectors, Pokharel said.

Al Thani also said his country planned to cooperate with Nepal on building hydropower plants, food production, and in the agriculture and tourism sectors.

The emir’s stop in Katamdnu is his last after visiting Bangladesh and the Philippines. He flies home later on Wednesday.
