U.S. Bank Altitude Reserve Visa Infinite card overview

The U.S. Bank Altitude™ Reserve Visa Infinite® Card is a premium travel-rewards card that's all about earning rewards you can redeem quickly, easily and for strong value. Although it comes with a pricey annual fee, it delivers enough statement credits to make up for most of its cost. The information for the U.S. Bank Altitude Reserve card has been collected independently by The Points Guy. The card details on this page have not been reviewed or provided by the card issuer. Card Rating*: ⭐⭐⭐⭐

*Card Rating is based on the opinion of TPG's editors and is not influenced by the card issuer.

Long-time award-travel enthusiasts know the drill: Accumulate airline miles or transferable points and then hunt to get maximum redemption value out of them. Often this means traveling at odd times, making additional stopovers or taking a circuitous route to your destination just for the chance to use your miles. (And don't get me started about the need to avoid outrageous airline fuel surcharges imposed on many award bookings.) New to The Points Guy? Want to learn more about credit card points and miles? Sign up for our daily newsletter. Welcome to the U.S. Bank Altitude Reserve Visa Infinite Card: A premium travel rewards card that takes the headache out of all things award travel. It's all about earning rewards that you can redeem quickly and easily and for strong value. It comes with a pricey $400 annual fee, but it delivers enough statement credits to largely make up for its cost.

Who is this card for?

This is the ideal card for those who want a premium travel rewards card without having to sweat about transferring points to airline miles and dealing with complicated frequent flyer programs. Instead, you simply redeem your points for flights, hotels, car rentals and more at a rate of 1.5 cents each.

The U.S. Bank Altitude Reserve is also a great card for people who use Apple Pay , Google Pay and Samsung Pay mobile-wallet apps, because that's where this card offers the most competitive rewards, especially on purchases that wouldn't otherwise qualify for a bonus on any other card.

Related: Is it time to ditch your wallet? The pros and cons of the mobile payments

As with all credit cards that only let you redeem your rewards for a fixed value. However, you'll likely come out behind when you have your heart set on first or business-class international flights. With other travel rewards cards, you can get a roundtrip, business-class flight to Europe or South America (that's usually worth between $4,000 and $6,000) for just 100,000 to 150,000 miles.

In contrast, 100,000 U.S. Bank Altitude Reserve points will only give you $1,500 worth of airfare, which won't get you to another continent or in in business class.

Therefore, this card is ideal for those who want to use their travel rewards for discounted flights, along with good deals on rental cars, hotels and transit. And since it lets you redeem your points for statement credits toward travel purchases, it also makes sense for those who want to stay in independent boutique hotels and fly lesser-known or discount carriers. Because you're purchasing travel the way you normally would, you'll also earn points and miles for your flights and hotels and enjoy any elite status perks you may have coming.

Sign-up bonus: 50,000 bonus points

With the Altitude card, you'll earn 50,000 bonus points (worth $750 in travel statement credits) after you spend $4,500 on purchases within 90 days of account opening. This is a smaller sign-up bonus compared to other travel reward cards , as the Altitude has a $400 annual fee. Take for example the Chase Sapphire Reserve, with a 50,000-point bonus after you spend $4,000 on purchases in the first three months from account opening (worth $1,000 according to TPG's valuations ) or the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card, with a 75,000-mile bonus after you spend $4,000 on purchases in the first three months from account opening (worth $1,388 according to TPG's valuations ).

Main benefits and perks

This card has many valuable benefits, but the most easily used is a statement credit of $325 for travel each year that automatically applies to purchases from airlines, hotels, car rentals, taxicabs, limousines, trains and cruise lines. Like many cards, you also get up to $100 in statement credits every four years to cover the application fee for Global Entry or TSA PreCheck.

You'll receive 8 visits to Priority Pass lounges annually that are valid for one person per visit. Other benefits include trip cancellation and interruption coverage, trip delay reimbursement, lost luggage reimbursement and even emergency evacuation and transportation coverage. Finally, you'll get a 30% discount on Silvercar rentals with no location, date or class restrictions.

How to earn points

apple card

The points-earning structure on this card is simple. You'll earn 5 points per dollar on prepaid hotels and car rentals booked directly in the Altitude Rewards Center and 3 points per dollar on all purchases made with the Apple Pay, Google Pay and Samsung Pay mobile-wallet systems and on all eligible travel purchases. Qualifying mobile-app purchases can be made in a store, in-app or online. Eligible travel purchases include those made directly with airlines, hotels, car rentals, taxicabs, limousines, trains and cruise lines. You'll earn 1 point per dollar spent on all other purchases.

But that's just part of the story, since the points are worth a strong 1.5 cents each -- not the 1 cent per point/mile that most loyalty programs offer.

How to redeem points

Points are worth 1.5 cents each (according to TPG's valuations) toward travel purchases, including those made directly from airlines, hotels, car rental companies, taxis, limousines, trains and cruise lines. When you redeem your points, you'll receive a statement credit toward your credit card purchases. You also have the choice to redeem your points in the U.S. Bank app in real time.

Which cards compete with the U.S. Bank Altitude Reserve card?

The immediate card that comes to mind is the Chase Sapphire Reserve. With a slightly higher $550 annual fee, this card comes with a $300 travel credit that is just as flexible and can be applied for flights, hotels and even rideshare services and parking fees. Until the end of 2021, this travel credit is also eligible towards gas and groceries if you're not comfortable traveling just yet.

travel rewards us bank

There's also the option to use your points at 1.5 cents each for travel booked through the Ultimate Rewards portal. However, where the Sapphire Reserve wins is the ability to transfer your points to 10 airline and three hotel loyalty programs -- including high-value options like United MileagePlus and World of Hyatt. Plus, get Priority Pass Select membership with this card -- and not just for 12 months.

However, the Sapphire Reserve pales in comparison when it comes to the earning rate. Cardholders will earn 3x on a broad definition of travel and dining and 1x on everything else. The Altitude Reserve's opportunity to earn 3x on mobile payment purchases casts a wider net for earning bonus points across all types of purchases.

Related: Chase Sapphire Reserve review

Another card with a lower annual fee ($95) is the Capital One Venture Rewards Card. For simplicity sake, you can redeem your Capital One miles at (a lower) 1 cent each for travel purchases on your statement credit. However, you do have the option to transfer your miles to Capital One's airline and hotel partners for even more value.

travel rewards us bank

The Venture's rewards rate is truly for those who don't want to keep up with multiple earning categories, with a flat-rate 2 miles per dollar on all purchases. With this card, you'll also get a Global Entry/TSA Precheck application credit.

Little-known facts about the U.S. Bank Altitude Reserve card

  • There's a minimum redemption amount for car rental and hotel awards. In order to redeem your points for a car rental, the rental charge must be at least $250. To use your points for a hotel charge, it must be at least $500. It's unclear what the rationale is behind this restriction and it isn't very friendly for weekend and/or budget travelers. However, if you're close to the minimum at a hotel, you may be able to circumvent this by purchasing a gift card at the hotel to boost your spending above $500 and then using the card later. There's no minimum for other kinds of travel purchases such as cruises and transit.
  • You must be a U.S. Bank customer to apply for this card. You can only apply if you already have an account with U.S. Bank, but they do have free checking and savings accounts (some with monthly minimums).
  • This card is great for Costco. Because this card is a Visa and Costco accepts mobile payments, it's a good card to use there . As with all other mobile-payment system purchases, you'll earn 3x points, which are worth 4.5% of what you spend. This is double what I earn now with a Costco Anywhere Visa® Card by Citi combo of 1.5% cash back (or 1.5x points) with the Chase Freedom Unlimited that can then be combined with my Chase Sapphire Reserve account where they're worth 1.5 cents each and book travel reservations directly through the Chase Ultimate Rewards travel center.
  • You get elite status with the Relais & Châteaux hotel chain. To receive the benefits, you must book it at least 72 hours in advance through the Visa Infinite Concierge and pay for it with your card. You'll then enjoy perks like complimentary breakfast on stays of up to seven consecutive nights. This benefit is only available at select Relais & Châteaux properties; you can see the list here. This was formerly a benefit of the Chase Sapphire Reserve.
  • Get a credit for a black car ride. Another benefit is a one-time $30 credit and 15% off the base rate for GroundLink® Black Car Service. The $30 credit might not be quite enough for a free ride, but it's certainly valuable, especially in cities where shared ride services don't operate.

Bottom line

Compared to some competing cards like the Sapphire Reserve, the U.S. Altitude Reserve card has a low profile. Perhaps that's because it's only available to existing U.S. Bank customers, and it doesn't allow you to transfer rewards to airline miles or hotel points. And most people probably don't realize that its points are worth 1.5 cents each. It's also easy to be put off by the card's $400 annual fee — until you realize it also comes with $325 a year in annual travel statement credits.

When you're able to earn 3x, effectively a 4.5% rate of return, on travel and all mobile-wallet purchases that might not qualify for any other bonus, then you have a strong rate of return. And for trips that are hard to take by redeeming airline miles or hotel points, the U.S. Bank Altitude Reserve can be invaluable.

U.S. Bank FlexPerks Travel Rewards Visa Signature card review

U.S. Bank FlexPerks Travel Rewards Visa Signature card review

Written by: Kelly Dilworth

In a Nutshell:

The U.S. Bank FlexPerks Travel Rewards Visa Signature card is a good value for cardholders who want to redeem points for travel purchases, but its other redemption options aren’t nearly as lucrative.  This offer is no longer available on our site.

Other Notable Features: $25 airline fee allowance, no foreign transaction fees, travel accident insurance, emergency assistance, baggage insurance, purchase protection, concierge service, ID theft expense reimbursement, Hideaway travel club, travel and hotel discounts

For just $49 a year, the U.S. Bank FlexPerks Travel Rewards card offers a high redemption value for travel purchases, as well as a modest airline fee credit toward rewards-funded flights and a number of other premium perks. All of this makes it one of our favorite pieces of plastic for budget travelers. It offers some of the most valuable rewards at a lower price than comparable travel cards , but its point value is not as high on cash back redemptions.

Great airfare redemption value

This is a card for aspiring travelers who are focused on using points for flights, hotel stays and car rentals. For a card that costs less than half of what many comparable cards charge, the redemption value on these purchases is very good. When you use points for a flight, hotel stay or car rental, they are worth around 1.5 cents per point – the same value as the pricey Chase Sapphire Reserve . U.S. Bank also doesn’t impose any blackout dates on flights, making the rewards even more valuable for cardholders who value a choice about when they fly.

When you use your points for anything else, however, they are only worth around 1 cent per point. This is still average among rewards cards, but makes it a less valuable option for cardholders who want to choose another redemption.

Competitive sign-up bonus

The U.S. Bank FlexPerks Travel Rewards card offers a generous sign-up bonus that puts a free domestic flight in easy reach for modest spenders, making it a good choice for people who do most of their shopping on just one card. If you spend an average of just $500 a month ($2,000 total) in the card’s first four months, you’ll receive 25,000 bonus points, worth around $375 in airfare.

Good value for the money

The FlexPerks Travel Rewards card also offers a number of premium travel perks that aren’t commonly found on credit cards with such a low annual fee. For example, cardholders who redeem points for air travel are awarded a $25 airline allowance for incidental fees and in-flight purchases. Cardholders are also given VIP event and entertainment access, concierge access and discounts on luxury hotels. One especially nice travel perk is the lack of a foreign transaction fee — you can freely use the card in foreign countries without racking up extra charges.

Bonus points for charitable giving

One of the most unusual features of the U.S. Bank FlexPerks Travel Rewards Visa is its altruistic rewards program. U.S. Bank encourages cardholders to be good Samaritans by granting two bonus points for every dollar spent on charitable donations. The card also offers double bonus points on more routine purchases, such as groceries, gas, dining and cellphone payments.

Why get the U.S. Bank FlexPerks Travel Rewards Visa Signature card?

  • You want to earn free airfare but don’t want to pay a high annual fee.
  • You regularly use your credit card to pay for groceries, gas and cellphone expenses.
  • You spend enough money each month to claim the card’s generous sign-up bonus.
  • You don’t mind spending a little time looking for a flight that maximizes your rewards spending.

How to use the U.S. Bank FlexPerks Travel Rewards Visa Signature card:

  • Save your points and only redeem them for travel purchases. You’ll get less value from your spending if you redeem your points for other options, such as a statement credit.
  • Use your card aggressively for the first four months so you can cash in on a free domestic flight.

Vault’s Viewpoint on Wells Fargo’s Autograph Journey Card

As competitors like Chase, Amex and Capital One gained legions of loyal followers, Wells Fargo missed out on the growth because of its meager credit card lineup. With the introduction of the Autograph Journey credit card and transferable points, Wells Fargo is taking a huge step forward.

The Wells Fargo Autograph Journey Card is designed with travelers in mind by earning 5X points on hotels, 4X points on airlines and 3X points on dining and all other travel purchases. With the introduction of transferable points, cardholders can redeem for cash back, travel, gift cards and more or transfer points to a growing list of Wells Fargo airline and hotel partners. Plus, it includes a $50 annual statement credit toward airline purchases. Travelers are also covered with an array of travel protections and cell phone insurance in case something goes wrong.

About the Wells Fargo Autograph Journey Travel Credit Card

The Wells Fargo Autograph Journey credit card builds upon the success of the original Wells Fargo Autograph℠ Card , as it also earns flexible points but with a focus on travel and dining purchases.

With the Autograph Journey, you’ll earn up to 5X points on travel-related purchases and an unlimited 3X points on dining worldwide. The card includes an annual flight credit that’s good on any airline, without having to choose an airline ahead of time. When you book trips with the Autograph Journey Card, you’ll receive valuable travel benefits to protect your trip, like rental car protection, trip cancellation/interruption protection, lost baggage reimbursement and more. Your cell phone is also covered up to $1,000, up to two times per 12-month period, when you pay the bill with your Autograph Journey Card (subject to a $25 deductible).

As a new cardholder, you can earn 60,000 bonus points by spending at least $4,000 on purchases within the first three months. These points are worth $600 toward travel and have numerous redemption options, including booking flights and hotels, getting cash back or buying gift cards. Wells Fargo also introduced transfer partners in April 2024, so you can transfer points to airlines and hotels to book award reservations worth potentially even more.

Benefits of the Wells Fargo Autograph Journey Card

In this Wells Fargo Autograph Journey Card review, you’ll learn about the card’s numerous benefits and how they can improve your travel experience.

Earning Power

People who love to travel can maximize their rewards with the Autograph Journey Card. This card’s bonus categories target the areas where travelers spend the most—flights, hotels, dining and other travel purchases.

Flexible Redemptions and Transfer Partners

The points earned from the Autograph Journey credit card have multiple redemption options. You can redeem them as a credit to your Wells Fargo credit card statement, as a deposit to your Wells Fargo bank account or to reduce your Wells Fargo mortgage balance. Points can be used to pay for online shopping or to buy gift cards. You can also book travel through Wells Fargo.

As of April 2024, Wells Fargo introduced hotel and airline transfer partners. The initial partners include:

  • Choice Privileges®
  • Air France-KLM Flying Blue
  • Avianca LifeMiles
  • British Airways Executive Club
  • Aer Lingus AerClub
  • Iberia Plus

Wells Fargo plans to expand this lineup to offer even more transfer opportunities to cardholders.

$50 Annual Airline Credit

Each year, you’ll receive a statement credit of $50 when you make an airline purchase of $50 or more. Unlike some airline credits, these can be used to buy airfare as well—and you don’t have to choose an airline ahead of time. Qualifying purchases include airfare, upgrades, checked baggage, change fees and more. So, whether you’re booking a flight or paying for a fee related to a flight you’re taking, this annual airline credit has your back.

Travel Protections

The best-laid travel plans can easily go astray when your flight is canceled, your bag is lost or something happens to your rental car. Your trip is covered when you use the Wells Fargo Autograph Journey Visa to book your reservations. Trip cancellation and interruption protection covers you up to $15,000 for lodging, flights and activities when your trip is canceled or interrupted for a covered reason.

If your checked or carry-on luggage is lost or stolen during transit, you’re covered for up to $3,000 per trip. Additionally, your rental car is protected against damage or theft with secondary rental car insurance. The card also comes with up to $1,000,000 in travel accident insurance, travel and emergency services assistance, roadside dispatch and more.

Cell phone Insurance

When you pay your cell phone bill with the Autograph Journey Card, you’re covered for up to $1,000 in cell phone insurance (up to two claims per 12-month period). This coverage protects you against damage, theft or loss, and it requires a simple $25 deductible.

Visa Signature Luxury Hotel Collection

As a Visa Signature credit card, this Wells Fargo credit card includes access to the Visa Signature Luxury Hotel Collection. Book a stay at one of the participating hotels to receive benefits similar to those who have elite status. Benefits include the best available rate guarantee, complimentary room upgrade (when available), complimentary breakfast for two, VIP guest status, late checkout upon request (when available) and a $25 food and beverage credit. Select hotels offer additional perks like a free hotel night, resort credits and more.

Autograph Card Exclusives

Eligible Wells Fargo cardholders also have access to Autograph Card Exclusives. These live, intimate events feature a limited number of tickets available exclusively to cardholders to purchase. Events occur throughout the U.S., and available artists and experiences change during the year.

Who Is the Wells Fargo Autograph Journey Card Best For?

The Autograph Journey from Wells Fargo is best for travelers who want to maximize rewards on travel purchases. This card’s bonus categories center around travel and dining, and it doesn’t require cardholders to book through the bank’s travel portal to earn maximum rewards. This card allows you to book directly with airlines, hotels and other travel providers to earn credit card rewards and perks from the loyalty programs.

While the card has a $95 annual fee, it is offset by its yearly $50 credit toward airline purchases. Simply book flights of $50 or more to automatically receive the statement credit on your next bill. The card’s complimentary travel protections and cell phone insurance also provide peace of mind for frequent travelers and people whose cell phone is an indispensable part of their daily lives.

Travelers who want to earn flexible rewards points that can transfer to airline and hotel loyalty programs will also be excited about this new Wells Fargo credit card . The Autograph Journey launches with five airline partners and one hotel partner. While this total is smaller than competing brands, Wells Fargo is working to expand its list of transfer partners, and more brands will be added throughout the year.

Who Should Consider an Alternative to the Wells Fargo Autograph Journey Card?

While the Wells Fargo Autograph Journey has much to offer, it may not be the right card for every traveler. Wells Fargo intends to add more transfer partners over time, but some consumers may not want to wait that long or roll the dice that new partners will be among their preferred brands. Consumers who want access to a greater array of transfer partners should look at alternatives from Chase , Citi, Capital One or American Express , since each of those programs has 14 or more partners to choose from.

Having access to TSA PreCheck or Global Entry while traveling is a huge timesaver. The Autograph Journey credit card does not offer reimbursement for these Trusted Traveler application fees. Some travel credit cards at the same price point, like the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card or the United℠ Explorer Card (whose benefit also applies to the NEXUS program), include reimbursement once every four years.

How Does the Wells Fargo Autograph Journey Card Stack Up to Its Competitors?

Before applying for the Wells Fargo Autograph Journey Card, compare it to these popular travel credit cards to decide which one is best for your wallet.

Wells Fargo Autograph Journey vs Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card

The Chase Sapphire Preferred is a solid travel credit card that earns Ultimate Rewards points. With this card, you’ll earn 5X points on travel when booking through Chase Travel and 2X points on other travel purchases, such as when purchasing directly with the airline, hotel or other provider. The Autograph Journey doesn’t require you to book through its portal to earn its top rewards rates and earns 50% more points on all other travel purchases. The Sapphire Preferred also earns 3X points on dining, select streaming services and on online groceries (excluding Target, Walmart and wholesale clubs), while the Autograph Journey earns 3X points only on dining.

When you redeem Ultimate Rewards points, you’ll get 25% more value when booking travel through Chase Travel. This extra value means you’ll redeem fewer points than booking similar travel through Wells Fargo. There are also 14 Chase airline and hotel partners , which is nearly three times as many options, and it features well-known domestic brands like United, Southwest, Hyatt and Marriott.

Wells Fargo Autograph Journey vs. Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card

With the Capital One Venture Rewards Card , you’ll earn an unlimited 2X miles on every purchase and 5X miles on hotels and car rentals booked through Capital One Travel. While it doesn’t offer the same earning power as the Autograph Journey, the Venture Card offers a solid rewards rate on every purchase, which is ideal for people who don’t want to remember which categories offer extra rewards. The card also includes up to $100 reimbursement for Global Entry or TSA PreCheck membership application fees and complimentary Hertz Five Star elite status, which the Autograph Journey cannot match.

Capital One miles can be redeemed for cash back, travel, gift cards and more. Cardholders can also get statement credits for purchases made in the previous 90 days. Further, Capital One offers more than 15 airline and hotel transfer partners, which is three times as many options as Wells Fargo. The card does not charge foreign transaction fees, and it includes auto rental collision damage waiver and extended warranty protection on eligible purchases made with your card.

Wells Fargo Autograph Journey vs. Wells Fargo Autograph℠ Card

For people who want to earn Wells Fargo credit card points but don’t want to pay an annual fee, the Wells Fargo Autograph Card is a solid choice. This card earns an unlimited 3X points on travel, gas, restaurants, transit, popular streaming services and phone plans. These bonus categories are an excellent way to maximize common spending categories, and many of these household categories aren’t available from the Autograph Journey Card.

Additionally, the no-annual-fee Autograph card includes an introductory APR offer on purchases, which the Autograph Journey doesn’t offer. If you need extra time to pay off your purchases without incurring interest charges, the Wells Fargo Autograph Card is the best option. This card includes many of the same protections as the $95 annual fee Autograph Journey, and its points also can be redeemed for cash back, gift cards and more or transferred to airline and hotel partners.

Frequently Asked Questions

What credit score do you need for a wells fargo autograph journey card.

For the best approval odds, you should have good to excellent credit when applying for the Autograph Journey Card. A good FICO credit score ranges from 670 to 739, while very good to exceptional FICO credit score start at 740 and above. If your credit score is below these levels, take steps to improve your score before applying.

How Much Are 60,000 Wells Fargo Points Worth?

At the most basic level, Wells Fargo points are worth 1 cent each toward travel, cash back, gift cards and more. This means that the 60,000 welcome bonus points from the Wells Fargo Autograph Journey Card are worth $600. With the introduction of transfer partners, you may receive even higher value when transferring points to book award flights or hotel rooms.

Does the Wells Fargo Autograph Journey Card Have Lounge Access?

No, the Autograph Journey does not include lounge access. To receive airport lounge access, typically, you’ll need to get a premium credit card for travel with an annual fee that likely ranges $395 or higher. Premium travel credit cards are best for frequent travelers who can justify paying such a high annual fee.

Bank of America® Travel Rewards credit card

Flexible rewards

The Bank of America® Travel Rewards credit card isn't tied to any particular airline or hotel chain. Book travel any way you want, with no restrictions and no blackout dates, and then use points to wipe out the cost on your statement. Bank of America® also has one of the broadest definitions of "travel" of any major issuers. You can use points to get credit for airfare, hotel stays, cruises and car rentals, of course — but also for things like campgrounds, art galleries, amusement parks, carnivals, circuses, aquariums and zoos. Add to that, points are good for credit on restaurant purchases, too.

Points don't expire, but the travel and dining purchases you can redeem them for have a time limit. You can redeem points for a statement credit toward travel or dining purchases made within 12 months prior to the date of redemption. And, these redemptions are limited to the most recent 2,500 qualifying travel and dining purchases.

Travel-friendly features

As part of the Visa network, the Bank of America® Travel Rewards credit card travels well internationally. Visa is widely accepted worldwide, meaning you're less likely to run into trouble using it abroad. You also don’t have to worry about paying foreign transaction fees, which typically cost 1% to 3% of every transaction.

Bank of America Preferred Rewards® boosts earnings

The Bank of America Preferred Rewards ® program allows certain Bank of America® credit card holders to earn bonus rewards. If you have enough money in combined balances in Merrill accounts, you can earn bonuses of 25% or more. There are three tiers to the program, determined by your combined balances in those bank and investment accounts:

Say you spent $10,000 on your card in a year. That would usually earn you 15,000 points, worth $150 at a penny a point. If you were a Gold member in Bank of America Preferred Rewards®, your bonus would push your earnings to 18,750 points ($187.50). If you were Platinum, 22,500 points ($225). For Platinum Honors, 26,250 ($262.50).

Other cards pay higher rewards rates

The Bank of America® Travel Rewards credit card is a great $0 -fee travel companion, but depending on how much you spend and how you prefer to redeem, a different card might better suit you.

Bigger spenders will likely get more value from the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card , which earns 2 miles per dollar spent on most purchases. Like the Bank of America® Travel Rewards credit card , it allows you to redeem rewards for credit against travel expenses at a rate of 1 cent per mile.

The annual fee on the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card is $95 . But, if you spend more than $4,750 annually, the rewards will offset the annual fee. Once you spend more than $19,000 a year, your rewards exceed those on the Bank of America® card even after taking into account the annual fee (assuming you aren't a Bank of America Preferred Rewards® member). Reducing the sting of the fee even further, the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card also reimburses you for the application cost for TSA Precheck or Global Entry, and it offers a substantially higher sign-up bonus: Enjoy a one-time bonus of 75,000 miles once you spend $4,000 on purchases within 3 months from account opening, equal to $750 in travel.

You get a lower redemption value for cash

The Discover it® Miles has a lot in common with the Bank of America® Travel Rewards credit card : an unlimited 1.5 miles per dollar spent, a $0 annual fee and no foreign transaction fees. But a key difference is that the Discover it® Miles gives you the same value per point whether you redeem for travel or cash back. The Bank of America® Travel Rewards credit card has an edge over this card Visa's wider acceptance abroad, but the Discover it® Miles is worth considering if you want better cash-back value.

Premium perks can take your travel further

The PenFed Pathfinder Rewards American Express® Card offers premium perks without the premium cost. Cardholders get 3 points per $1 spent on travel purchases (4 points for those enrolled in the PenFed Honors Advantage program) and 1.5 points per $1 spent everywhere else. On top of rewards, the card offers a $100 annual air travel credit and up to $100 in the form of a statement credit for Global Entry and TSA PreCheck programs every five years.

This card comes with a $95 annual fee, but it's waived for PenFed Honors Advantage members. Even without qualifying for PenFed Honors Advantage, you can effectively cancel out the annual fee as long as you can take advantage of the full $100 air travel credit. You’ll need to be a credit union member to qualify for this card.

If you'd like to see how these cards compare with other potential travel card options, you can search NerdWallet's list of best rated credit cards .

The Bank of America® Travel Rewards credit card offers a solid travel rewards program for the fee-averse. If your deposits reside at Bank of America®, you can gain even more rewards.

alt

If you're willing to pay an annual fee ( $95 ), this card gives you 2 miles per dollar on most spending. It has a big sign-up bonus, and miles are redeemable for statement credit against any travel expense.

Methodology.

NerdWallet reviews credit cards with an eye toward both the quantitative and qualitative features of a card. Quantitative features are those that boil down to dollars and cents, such as fees, interest rates, rewards (including earning rates and redemption values) and the cash value of benefits and perks. Qualitative factors are those that affect how easy or difficult it is for a typical cardholder to get good value from the card. They include such things as the ease of application, simplicity of the rewards structure, the likelihood of using certain features, and whether a card is well-suited to everyday use or is best reserved for specific purchases. Our star ratings serve as a general gauge of how each card compares with others in its class, but star ratings are intended to be just one consideration when a consumer is choosing a credit card. Frequently asked questions

The Bank of America® Travel Rewards credit card is a good choice for someone looking for simple rewards with a $0 annual fee. Cards with annual fees, however, typically offer more robust rewards and perks and may be a better fit for heavy travelers. With this card, you earn 1.5 points per $1 spent. (Bank of America Preferred Rewards ®customers earn 25%-75% more points.) Points can be redeemed for credit against any travel purchase.

Use your Bank of America® Travel Rewards credit card to book travel however you want, and then redeem points for credit on your statement against those travel purchases. You can use points to cover expenses like flights, hotels, vacation packages, cruises, rental cars, baggage fees and more.

Points are worth 1 cent each when redeemed for a travel statement credit.

Points don’t expire as long as your card account is open, but you will forfeit unused points if you close your account. While points don't expire, the travel and dining purchases you can redeem them for do have a time limit. You can redeem points for a statement credit toward travel or dining purchases made within 12 months prior to the date of redemption. And, redemptions are limited to the most recent 2,500 qualifying travel and dining purchases.

The more often you travel, especially if you travel internationally, the more value you can get out of a travel rewards credit card. However, if you don’t travel often, you may benefit from a cash-back card instead.

"Status symbol" pets are being given up by owners who get scared as they grow up, an animal charity has said, with the cost of living possibly paying a part in a rise in separations.

The Exotic Pet Refuge, which homes parrots, monkeys, snakes and alligators among others, says it receives referrals across the country, including from zoos and the RSPCA.

"They're a status symbol. People will say, 'OK, I'll have an alligator or a 10ft boa constrictor'," co-owner Pam Mansfield told the BBC.

"But when the animal gets big, they will get too frightened to handle them, and then the pet has to go."

She added people who want to get rid of the pets sometimes call zoos for help, which then call on her charity.

In some cases, owners don't have licences to own dangerous animals, she says, blaming a "lack of understanding" for what she says is a rise in the number of exotic animals needing to be rehomed.

She says people "just don't have the space" for some snakes, for example, with some growing to as much as 12ft and needing their own room.

The cost of living crisis has also forced owners to give their pets away, she says.

Her charity has also been affected by those increased costs, with the electricity bill rising to £10,000 a month at their highest, to fund things like heated pools for alligators.

Private car parks are accused of "confusing drivers" after introducing a new code of conduct - despite "doing all they can" to prevent an official government version.

The code of practice launched by two industry bodies - British Parking Association and the International Parking Community - includes a ten-minute grace period for motorists to leave a car park after the parking period they paid for ends.

It also features requirements for consistent signage, a single set of rules for operators on private land and an "appeals charter".

Private parking businesses have been accused of using misleading and confusing signs, aggressive debt collection and unreasonable fees.

That comes after a government-backed code of conduct was withdrawn in June 2022, after a legal challenges by parking companies.

RAC head of policy Simon Williams said: "We're flabbergasted that the BPA and the IPC have suddenly announced plans to introduce their own private parking code after doing all they can over the last five years to prevent the official government code created by an act of Parliament coming into force.

"While there are clearly some positive elements to what the private parking industry is proposing, it conveniently avoids some of the biggest issues around caps on penalty charges and debt recovery fees which badly need to be addressed to prevent drivers being taken advantage of."

BPA chief executive Andrew Pester said: "This is a crucial milestone as we work closely with government, consumer bodies and others to deliver fairer and more consistent parking standards for motorists."

IPC chief executive Will Hurley said: "The single code will benefit all compliant motorists and will present clear consequences for those who decide to break the rules."

Sky News has learnt the owner of Superdry's flagship store is weighing up a legal challenge to a rescue plan launched by the struggling fashion retailer.

M&G, the London-listed asset manager, has engaged lawyers from Hogan Lovells to scrutinise the restructuring plan.

The move by M&G, which owns the fashion retailer's 32,000 square foot Oxford Street store, will not necessarily result in a formal legal challenge - but sources say it's possible.

NatWest says its mortgage lending nearly halved at the start of the year as it retreated from parts of the market when competition among lenders stepped up.

New mortgage lending totalled £5.2bn in the first three months of 2024, the banking group has revealed, down from £9.9bn the previous year.

The group, which includes Royal Bank of Scotland and Coutts, also reported an operating pre-tax profit of £1.3bn for the first quarter, down 27% from £1.8bn the previous year.

An unexplained flow of British luxury cars into states neighbouring Russia continued into February, new data shows.

About £26m worth of British cars were exported to Azerbaijan, making the former Soviet country the 17th biggest destination for UK cars - bigger than long-established export markets such as Ireland, Portugal and Qatar.

Azerbaijan's ascent has coincided almost to the month with the imposition of sanctions on the export of cars to Russia.

Rishi Sunak has hailed the arrival of pay day with a reminder his government's additional National Insurance tax cut kicks in this month for the first time.

At last month's budget, the chancellor announced NI will be cut by a further 2p - so some workers will pay 8% of their earnings instead of the 12% if was before autumn.

The prime minister has repeated his claim this will be worth £900 for someone on the average UK salary.

While this additional cut - on top of the previous 2p cut in January - does equate to £900 for those on average full-time earnings of £35,000, there are two key issues with Mr Sunak's claim:

  • Once the effect of all income tax changes since 2021 are taken into account, the Institute for Fiscal Studies reports an average earner will benefit from a tax cut of £340 - far less than £900;
  • Moreover, anyone earning less than £26,000 or between £55,000-£131,000 will ultimately be worse off.

In short, this is because NI cuts are more than offset by other tax rises.

We explain below how this is the case...

Tax thresholds

This is partly down to tax thresholds - the amount you are allowed to earn before you start paying tax (and national insurance) and before you start paying the higher rate of tax - will remain frozen.

This means people end up paying more tax than they otherwise would, when their pay rises with inflation but the thresholds don't keep up.

This phenomenon is known as "fiscal drag" and it's often called a stealth tax because it's not as noticeable immediately in your pay packet.

That low threshold of £12,570 has been in place since April 2021.

The Office for Budget Responsibility says if it had increased with inflation it would be set at £15,220 for 2024/25.

If that were the case, workers could earn an extra £2,650 tax-free each year.

Less give, more take

Sky News analysis shows someone on £16,000 a year will pay £607 more in total - equivalent to more than three months of average household spending on food.

Their income level means national insurance savings are limited but they are paying 20% in income tax on an additional £2,650 of earnings.

In its analysis , the IFS states: "In aggregate the NICs cuts just serve to give back a portion of the money that is being taken away through other income tax and NICs changes - in particular, multi-year freezes to tax thresholds at a time of high inflation."

Overall, according to the institute, for every £1 given back to workers by the National Insurance cuts, £1.30 will have been taken away due to threshold changes between 2021 and 2024.

This rises to £1.90 in 2027.

The UK could face a shortage of cava due to a drought in the sparkling wine's Spanish heartlands.

The Penedes area of Catalonia is dealing with its worst drought on record, with vineyards across the region so parched the roots of 30-year-old vines have died.

It's left shrivelled red and green grapes languishing under intense sun, fuelled by fossil-fuel driven climate change.

Cava is an increasingly popular drink in the UK, with 17.8 million bottles sold in 2023 - an increase of 5% from the previous year, when Britons stocked up on 16.8 million bottles, according to the Cava Regulatory Board.

That makes the UK the fourth-biggest buyer, behind only the US, Belgium and Germany.

Workforce slashed

The problems have been compounded after Catalonia-based cava producer Freixenet announced it will temporarily lay off 615 workers, almost 80% of its workforce.

Under Spanish law, companies facing exceptional circumstances can lay off staff or reduce working hours.

This measure is expected to take effect from May and it is not known how long it will last.

Price rises

One industry source told retail publication The Grocer  that cava shortages would push up prices "certainly for next year" if there isn't enough supply.

This could last for years if the drought persists, they added.

Consumer expert Helen Dewdney told MailOnline the staff cuts at Freixenet can only mean one thing - price rises.

However, she added, supermarkets say they are not experiencing any issues right now.

Parents are being hammered by rising childcare costs, according to a new study that suggests they may spend more than £160,000 raising their child to the age of 18.

Research by Hargreaves Lansdown has found that parents with children pay £6,969 a year more than couples without.

Over 18 years and assuming an annual inflation rate of 3%, that amounts to a whopping £163,175, the investment platform said.

Its study also found that parents were less likely to have money left at the end of the month.

Single parents carry the biggest burden, with the research suggesting they have just £85 left on average compared to £365 for couples with children.

Hargreaves Lansdown also found just 23% of single parents reported having enough emergency savings to cover at least three months' worth of essential expenses, compared to 63% of couples with children.

Parents are also at a slight disadvantage when it comes to pensions, the research found, with only 43% of couples with children on track for a moderate retirement income, compared to 47% without. Only 17% of single parents have a decent projected pension fund.

Sarah Coles, head of personal finance at the firm, said "having children is one of the most expensive decisions a person can make".

She adds that as a result of having a child, "financial resilience suffers across the board", and added: "For single parents, life is even tougher, and they face far lower resilience on almost every measure.

"It means we need all the help we can get."

One of the top stories shaking up the markets this morning is that UK-based mining company Anglo American has rejected a major $38.8bn (£31bn) takeover bid.

Details of the attempted buyout by Australian rival BHP emerged yesterday  - sending Anglo American shares soaring.

The deal would have created the world's biggest copper mining company - with the news coming as the price of the metal hit record highs this week.

However, Anglo American has now dismissed the proposal as "opportunistic" and said BHP had undervalued the company.

Anglo's shares are slightly down by 0.8% this morning - suggesting investors may not have given up hopes that a deal could eventually be agreed.

However, overall the FTSE 100 is up around 0.4% this morning, buoyed by strong reported earnings from US tech giants Microsoft and Google owner Alphabet.

It's helped the index, of the London Stock Exchange's 100 most valuable companies, hit yet another intraday (during the day) record of 8,136 points this morning.

The winning streak comes after a week of all-time highs on the index - including a record close of 8,078 points yesterday. The score is based on a calculation of the total value of the shares on the index.

Among the companies doing well this morning is NatWest - despite the bank reporting a fall in pre-tax profits of nearly 28% for the first quarter of the year.

Shares in the lender are up more than 3% after its results were better than expected by analysts.

On the currency markets, £1 buys $1.25 US or €1.16, almost on a par with yesterday.

Meanwhile, the price of a barrel of Brent crude oil has crept up slightly to $89 (£71).

Self-checkouts - they're like marmite, people seem to either love them or hate them.

But the boss of Sainsbury's has claimed that his customers do  enjoy using self-checkouts, despite criticism that that machines don't always provide the convenience promised.

Simon Roberts told The Telegraph that there are more of them in Sainsbury's stores "than a number of years ago" as shoppers like the "speedy checkout".

But despite this, he said there won't be a time when they'll replace cashiers completely.

"Over the last year, where we've put more self-checkouts in, we're always making sure that the traditional kind of belted checkout is there," he said.

His comments come after northern supermarket Booths ditched self-checkouts at all but two of its sites after customer feedback.

Walmart and Costco in the US have also scaled back on the systems.

Let us know in the comments - do you love or hate self-checkouts?

We've all heard consumer advice that's repeated so often it almost becomes cliché. So, every Friday the Money team will get to the bottom of a different "fact" and decide whether it's a myth or must.

This week it is...

'Smart meters save you money'

For this one, we've enlisted the help of Dr Steve Buckley, also known as the Energy Doctor and head of data science at Loop...

So do smart meters help you save?

"The short answer is both yes and no," Steve says.

"Installing a smart meter by itself won't magically reduce your energy consumption. But, by giving you easy access to your energy usage data, smart meters pave the way for savings that you couldn't achieve otherwise."

Before smart meters, most households only found out how much energy they had used when the bill arrived.

By that stage it's too late to address wasteful usage, leading to what's known as "bill shock".

"With a smart meter, you can see your usage and costs in real-time through an in-home display or an app provided by your supplier," Steve says.

"This immediate feedback encourages you to use less energy. If you measure it, you can control it."

In 2022, the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero found that homes with smart meters used about 3.4% less electricity and 3% less gas.

"This might not seem like a lot, but it adds up to a saving of over £50 per household annually," Steve says.

If all homes in the UK made similar cuts, that would amount to savings of around £1.5bn and a potential reduction in CO2 emissions by about 2.7m tonnes each year.

"Good for individual households but also great for the planet," Steve says.

Smart meters are often installed at no extra cost to the consumer - it's effectively free data for households.

Limitations

Smart meters are more or less what you make of them - a simple, free tool that allows you to see headline figures.

However, "without detailed analysis, it's tough to identify and eliminate" where you could be wasting money, Steve says.

Apps like Utrack, Loop and Hugo Energy can help you work out where you might be losing money by offering a more detailed breakdown if connected to your smart meter.

Those tools are often free, but you may need to register your card details as proof of address.

The tools give a number of useful insights, including looking at consumption in other households of similar size or monitoring where chunks of your money are going, such as to a faulty boiler or the "phantom load" (energy wasted by devices left on unnecessarily).

Myth or must?

Although smart meters alone don't reduce energy bills, they are a vital tool to help energy efficiency and cost savings.

It can be hard to balance getting nutritious foods that make you feel good without spending a lot.

In this series, which ends today after digging into yoghurt, bread, pasta, fruit juice and plant-based milk, we've tried to find the healthiest options in the supermarket for the best value.

Sunna Van Kampen,  founder of  Tonic Health ,  who went viral on social media for reviewing food in the search of healthier choices, has given his input for the past six weeks.

And for the final part of the series, we're looking at the nation's favourite snack: crisps.

The series does not aim to identify the outright healthiest option, but to help you get better nutritional value for as little money as possible.

We're a people obsessed: in the UK, we get through six billion packets of crisps a year.

Sunna has three easy tips for finding the tastiest options that are kinder to your body...

1. Understand the fat facts

"Typical crisps can be oil sponges and contain over 30% fat from low-quality vegetable oils that have been fried," Sunna says.

"What we are on the lookout for those that buck the trend and stay away from the fat."

So, he says, aim for crisps that contain less than 15% total fat.

2. Fibre up your snack time

"While crisps aren't exactly salad, some can offer more nutritional value than others," Sunna says.

"Check the labels for options that have more fibre or protein."

These help you feel fuller for longer and also keep your digestive system happy.

3. Portion control

"It's easy to demolish an entire bag in one sitting - however, many brands offer multipack bags that are portion-controlled, usually around 25g a bag," Sunna says.

Sticking to these helps to manage calorie intake and stops overindulging.

The big picture

"Small changes might not immediately seem like a lot but if you eat a bag a day with your lunch, we are talking about up to a whopping two litres of oil cut from your diet over the course of the year," Sunna says,

"This is not permission to eat crisps every day (enjoy as an occasional treat) but rather an indication of how small changes add up quickly overtime."

The good news is Sunna's recommendations are all similar in price to their popular, fattier rivals - so you don't need to make a bigger investment to reap some health benefits.

We've included the prices for the brands' standard multipacks at Tesco - correct as of time of writing.

Walkers Oven Baked - £1.95 for six-pack

"Around £1.95 for a pack of six, these crisps are baked, not fried, slashing the fat content to 13%, so a great option."

Popchips - £2.25 for five-pack

"These have just 13% fat content as they're popped rather than fried so are a great way to go reducing fat without compromising on the crunch."

And for some non-crisp options...

ProperCorn Popcorn - £2 for six-pack

Often described as "the healthier, lighter option", Sunna says ProperCorn "isn't actually the best option on the market for fat content at 17.4%".

That being said, you do get "double the fibre of standard crisps at 10.9g per 100g".

At only £2 for a pack of six, it's well-priced, too.

Snack A Jacks - £2.20 for five-pack

"At only 8.3% fat per 100g, it's a great option at £2.20 for a pack of five."

Penn State Baked Pretzels - £1.50 for 175g bag

Now for Sunna's winner.

"The German classic is a great option at only 4.6% fat per 100g," he says.

One downfall is that they are not available in portioned bags, so be careful with the whole 175g bag for £1.50.

Want another option altogether?

"If you want to be even healthier, consider the switch to nuts, seeds or even dried cheese snacks," Sunna says.

"Higher in calories yes, but higher in good healthy fats too and are more satiating which will limit the chance of overeating."

The nutritionist's view -  from  Dr Laura Brown , senior lecturer in nutrition, food and health sciences at Teesside University...

"Baked instead of fried crisps is definitely a way forward as well as the popcorn suggestion," she says.

"We should also be aiming to look at the amount of protein and fibre found in products. For example, lentil and pea snacks are growing in popularity due to their higher protein and fibre values, so the focus should be more on looking for ingredients other than potatoes, oil and salt.

"I also feel 'crisp' based snacks made in an air fryer are becoming more popular. These can include a wholemeal wrap with a small amount of oil added, and placed in the air fryer with paprika and other seasoning added for flavour.

"Also, chickpeas in the air fryer make for a super delicious protein and fibre rich snack. They are cheaper than crisps and lower in fat since no oil has to be added."
