If you haven’t yet visited Perth – Its time!
Introduction to Perth
Perth is the capital and largest city of Western Australia. Located on the Swan River, the city is home to a population of over two million people (80% of WA's population) and is known for its vibrant culture and relaxed lifestyle.
With its mostly pleasant climate and diverse landscapes, Perth is the perfect destination for a holiday or business trip. I say mostly pleasant because it can on the rare occasion get really hot. I’ve spent summers in Perth with multiple days over 40 degrees, and while it doesn’t happen often it can so be aware.
The city is renowned for its beautiful beaches, which are a popular destination for both locals and tourists alike. From its white sands and turquoise waters to its picturesque sunsets, Perth's beaches offer something for everyone. Not to mention, the surrounding area is also home to some of Australia's best hiking trails, allowing you to explore the great outdoors.
Weather and Seasons In Perth
Summer in perth.
Perth endures warm and arid summers with little or no rainfall.
Average summer temperatures fluctuate between 17.5 and 30 degrees Celsius. February typically emerges as the warmest month, boasting an average high of 31.6 degrees Celsius.
As the capital city of WA, Perth often experiences strong afternoon breezes, known as the Fremantle Doctor on clear summer days, which can cause the sea to become quite turbulent. The wind can get very strong so beaches should be visited early in the morning before the doctor arrives.
The sea temperature over the summer months varies from 20.9 to 22.8 degrees Celsius and hits its highest average of 23.4 degrees Celsius in March, so the ocean does stay quite cool.
On average, there are 25.8 days per year with temperatures exceeding 35°C, and 3.6 days per year with temperatures exceeding 40°C.
Winter In Perth
In Perth, winter temperatures are variable, but typically, July is the chilliest month, with an average high of 18.4 degrees Celsius.
Winter temperature variations are narrower than in summer, with highs generally between 16 degrees Celsius and 22 degrees Celsius, with lows between 3 degrees Celsius and 13 degrees Celsius.
Perth's wet season is also in winter which as a Queenslander was really hard for me to get my head around. It seemed really unfair to have the rain and the cold in the same season, but really the rain usually comes for a few days at a time and then disappears. Its not set in for weeks like some cities.
Spring and Autumn In Perth
Spring and Autumn typically have the same temperatures with Spring warming up and Autumn cooling off. You can expect temps in the middle of spring or autumn (fall) to be around 18-20 degrees C with much cooler nights.
It can still get down to 8-10 degrees at night at the start of spring but will move into the double digits before too long.
Likewise Autumn can still be warm until at least April with Easter typically being the last great weather before it really starts to cool down.
With an average daily sunshine duration of 8.8 hours, Perth enjoys approximately 3,200 hours of sunshine each year and has 138.7 days of clear skies on average, claiming the title of Australia's most sun-drenched capital city.

- See Gija Jumulu (The Giant Boab) – Thought to be over 750 years old this giant Baob (yes Boab and not Baobab) was a gift from the Gija people of Warmun in the East Kimberley region of far north WA. The tree was trucked down to Perth where trees were trimmed, power lines dropped and parking cleared for its journey through the inner city.
- Kings Park War Memorial : This memorial is dedicated to the fallen soldiers of World War I and II. It is a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made in the name of freedom
The WA Government has a great website the showcases everything to see and do in Kings Park .

The Museum Of Perth
While I am not always a massive fan of Museums, the Museum of Perth does a great job of chronicling the social, cultural, political, and architectural history of Perth, Western Australia.
Situated in the heart of the city, the museum serves as a reflective lens into the past, offering visitors a way of understanding of the city's evolution from its early days to the present.
The museum's exhibits feature a collection of photographs, maps, historical documents, and multimedia displays that bring the stories of Perth's people, places, and events to life.
The photographic collections are particularly compelling, offering a visual journey through the changing face of Perth's streetscapes and landmarks. The museum also houses a collection of oral histories, providing personal narratives that add depth and texture to the visitor's understanding of the city's development.
There is a great exhibition currently on display curated by the West Australian cycle club which showcases the fi rst crossing of the Nullabor on a bike, which was done by Arthur Richardson in 1896. If you've every driven the Nullabor you can appreciate just how challenging this must have been!
Art Gallery of WA
The Art Gallery of WA is a great way to see some of the best art Western Australia produces. They have displays that are traditional paint and more interactive showcases as well.
From Indigenous artworks to contemporary award winners, the gallery has a wide range of art to see. They hold regular events and also have a wonderful store where you can purchase clothing, accessories and even fake nails designed by local artists.
I bought a lovely blouse about 3 years ago that I still wear today. Before you get to Perth you might want to purchase a first nations book to help you learn all about the local indigenous culture. The Noongar Bush Tucker book is really good.
The Gallery does rotate through different installations and displays so its best to check their w ebsite for what's currently on.
Fremantle Prison
Fremantle Prison is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the largest convict-built building in the Southern Hemisphere. It was built between 1855 and 1865, and operated as a convict prison until 1991. Today, Fremantle Prison is a popular tourist attraction, offering a variety of tours and exhibits that tell the story of the prison and its inmates.
What to do at Fremantle Prison
There are a number of different tours and exhibits available at Fremantle Prison, including:
- Behind Bars: This tour takes visitors through the main cell block and exercise yards, and provides insights into the daily lives of prisoners.
- True Crime: This tour focuses on some of the most notorious criminals who were incarcerated at Fremantle Prison, including Moondyne Joe and Martha Rendell.
- Tunnels Tour: This tour takes visitors underground to explore the network of tunnels that were built by prisoners in the 1860s.
- Torchlight Tour: This evening tour takes visitors through the prison's darkest corners and tells stories of ghosts and hauntings.
- Convict Prison: This exhibit explores the lives of convicts and ticket-of-leavers in Western Australia, and the role that Fremantle Prison played in their lives.
Tickets are available on the Prison web site however you can't purchase all tours online. Check out this page for the info and number for the ticket office.
It is recommended you either purchase or book your tours during the busy times which is usually over the summer break or school holidays.
Visit Perth's Beaches
No visit to Perth would be complete without visiting its stunning beaches. From Scarborough Beach to Cottesloe Beach, the city has something for everyone. Here are some of the best beaches to explore:
Scarborough Beach
Located in the northern suburbs of Perth, Scarborough Beach is a popular destination for beachgoers and surfers alike. It features white sand and crystal-clear waters, and is the perfect spot to relax and soak up the sun.
I lived in Scarborough Beach for a few years and worked at Club Atlantis which was the nightclub at Observation City Hotel. It was a great few years and I have really fond memories of Scarborough Beach in particular.
Cottesloe Beach
This beach is situated slightly south west of Perth city. It is known for its calm waters and picturesque views of the Indian Ocean. Cottesloe Beach also has a photogenic bathing pavilion that shows up in almost all photos of Cottesloe.
Parking is notoriously challenging at Cottesloe Beach so consider taking public transport from the city or getting there early to secure a park.
If you are someone who would like to get a more “all around tan” there is a beach suited to you just north of Cottesloe. Swanbourne beach “all around tanning area” is at the north end of Swanbourne beach.
Coogee Beach
This beach is located in the city of Fremantle and is the perfect spot for a day trip if you are staying in the southern suburbs. It features a large grassy area, perfect for picnics, and is a wide long sandy beach. Woodman point recreation reserve is here which has a selection of good spots for your picnic lunch or BBQ

Rottnest Island
Rottnest Island, affectionately known as ‘Rotto' by the locals, is a stunning island getaway just off the coast of Perth in Western Australia. Known for its tranquil turquoise waters, white sandy beaches, and the adorable Quokka, a small marsupial found nowhere else on earth, the island is a popular destination for both tourists and Perth residents looking to escape the bustle of city life.
One of the island's main attractions is its unique ecosystem. Visitors can enjoy a range of outdoor activities such as snorkeling in the crystal-clear waters, where they'll find a variety of marine life in the coral reefs.
Diving is also a popular pursuit, with shipwrecks around the island providing fascinating underwater exploration. Beware however that the waters off Rottnest are never warm. They might not be freezing but I've never swum on Rotto without having a few seconds of “whoa this isn't particularly warm”.
The island is also a haven for beach lovers, with some of the most beautiful and secluded beaches in the world. The Basin, Geordie Bay, and Pinky Beach are just a few of the spots where one can relax on the soft sand or swim in the warm waters.
Getting to Rottnest Island is easy with ferries regularly departing from Fremantle, Hillarys Boat Harbour, and the city's own Barrack Street Jetty. The trip offers stunning coastal views and, if you're lucky, you might spot some dolphins along the way.
Remember that while the island is only 25kms offshore, the water can get rough particularly on the way home. Once the afternoon wind comes in it can be very choppy. If you are prone to sea sickness checking the conditions and taking some medication might be the best thing.
Once on the island, bicycles are the transport mode of choice, though there are also bus tours available for those who prefer a guided experience.
Rottnest Island is not just a day trip destination; it also offers accommodation options ranging from camping to premium lodging. However the accommodation is limited and getting a room during any school holidays, but particularly the summer break can be very challenging. Book as early as you can to secure it.
Tours for Rottnest Island
Sometimes it's just easier to do a tour. These options will allow you to have someone else organise your day on Rotto. See if there is something that suits your style and budget.
Hiking and Nature Walks in Perth
Perth is home to some of the most beautiful nature walks and hiking trails in Australia. From the King's Park Nature Trail to the Bibbulmun Track, there is something for everyone. Here are some of the best trails to explore:
King's Park Art In The Park Walk
This easy-to-moderate trail offers stunning views of the city skyline and the Swan River. It is a popular destination for hikers, birdwatchers, and nature lovers alike. At only 2.6km it takes about half an hour plus photo time of course. This is the AllTrai ls link and if you would like something longer you could try Kings Park Perimiter trail .
Rocky Pool Walk
A short 4.8km loop trail in Kalamunda has a great rocky creek swimming hole for a cool down. It has only 200m of elevation change so suitable for most people. Find it on AllTrails here .
Perth Foreshore Trail
If you are visiting Elizabeth Quay, you could combine it with a 10km walk around Perth Foreshore. It is a loop trai l means that you start and end at the same point and at 10km long its only a few hours. The trail takes you over both Perth city bridges, along the foreshore on the city side and then along the river on the Southern side. Its a great walk with plenty of facilities along the way.
Cricket at the WACA
The Western Australian Cricket Association (WACA) is the home of cricket in Perth. It is home to a number of state and domestic matches, and is the perfect spot for cricket fans to catch a game. It also offers a number of activities, such as tours of the ground and lessons for aspiring cricketers.
The WACA used to be the home of Cricket in WA, however since it's redevelopment and reduction to 20,000 seats, all large international games are now played at Optus Stadium.
Aussie Rules football also used to play a lot of matches at the WACA however after the last redevelopment the ground was too small. It's been increased in size recently and there are a few football matches slated for next year (2024).
Other Sports and Sporting Events in Perth
If you are a soccer fan , consider heading down to the Fremantle city football club to watch a high level mens Soccer game. The season for soccer is winter in Australia so they will start games around the end of February. The club plays across different grounds so check out the schedul e and location of the field.
Why do I suggest Fremantle City Football Club? Fremantle area has a large number of European origin families who settled in the area. Soccer (or football) is more popular in this area and the skill level is in my personal opinion the highest in this region.
AFL is played during the winter season and both Perth Teams, The West Coast Eagles and Fremantle's Dockers are fairly competitive (for the most part). An AFL game will leave you completely confused if you've never seen it before but it can be very exciting that's for sure.
I watched heaps of AFL during my 20's as a close friend played, but I'm not up on it at all now. However – I always watch the finals series as I find that outside of American football I find AFL can be really heart stoppingly thrilling. My personal love is NRL or American football but I never miss the AFL finals season.
The West Coast Eagles play at Optus Stadium as do The Fremantle Dockers.
The Big Bash League of Cricket is played also at Optus Stadium and pending touring commitments you might be lucky enough to catch the Australian team playing a test during the summer.
The Perth Fever Netball team play at RAC Aren a during the winter months. Netball is a super fast and very quick game to watch. If you've never seen a game, check out the Fever's website for their home game schedule.
Swan Valley Wineries
Perth wineries are some of the best in the world. The Swan Valley wineries are particularly renowned for their quality and selection of wines. Swan Valley is home to some of the most prestigious wineries in Western Australia. Sandalford, for example, is one of the region's oldest and most renowned wineries. It has been producing premium wines since 1880, and is renowned for its range of award-winning wines.
The Sandalford Estate is a picturesque place to visit, as it is set amongst rolling hills and vineyards. Visitors can appreciate the history of the estate and enjoy a range of activities, from wine tastings and tours of the estate, to al fresco dining and unique experiences.
The Mandoon Estate is another renowned Swan Valley winery. It has a rich history and has been producing premium wines for over a century. The estate is home to a range of wineries, including a cellar door, a restaurant, and an amphitheatre.
Visitors can enjoy wine tastings, tours of the estate, and unique events and experiences. Mandoon Estate is renowned for its range of award-winning wines, including sparkling wines, sauvignon blancs, and shiraz.
The Swan Valley wineries offer visitors the chance to sample some of the best wines in the world. Whether you are looking for a relaxing day out, or an unforgettable experience, Perth wineries are sure to satisfy. Swan Valley wineries are renowned for their quality and selection of wines, so come and experience what Perth has to offer for yourself.
Swan Valley Wine Tours and Tastings
Its always best to leave the car at home when you are doing a winery tour. Here are some great options from Perth city for full and half day winery tours.
Venture out of Perth City
There are many things to see and do just outside of Perth city. You might like to swim with the wild dol phins , or Rockingham for a boat trip to the Shoalwater Islands or even do a tour of the Pinnacles with some stargazing thrown in.
Pinnacles Tour From Perth
Conclusion: getting the best from your perth vacation.
Perth is a vibrant city with something for everyone. Whether you're a nature enthusiast or a city dweller, the city has something for you. From its iconic architecture to its world-class museums and its stunning beaches, Perth is a city like no other. Getting there: Perth is the closest Australian city to the UK and you can fly direct with Qantas from London Heathrow. If you fancy a pitstop along the way, consider Dubai, Doha, Singapore or Hong Kong. Trailfinders can book any of the leading airlines to Perth.
Getting around by car: Hire a car or take a taxi or rideshare (Uber, Ola, Didi) into the CBD. The 16-kilometre journey takes about 20 minutes. Rideshares are the most affordable option and will cost about AUD $35 (£19).
Getting around by public transport: Transperth runs bus 935 from Perth International Airport into the city regularly. The easiest way to travel on the city's network of buses, trains, and ferry is to purchase a Smartrider card, a tap-on-tap-off system that allows you to load currency. Otherwise, correct fare (varies depending on zones) is required.
Getting around by bike: Perth is a bike-friendly city with flat paths along the Swan River. Most roads have bike lanes.
Three ways to soak up Australia’s alfresco lifestyle in Perth
1. a table with a view.
Perth is all about an outdoor lifestyle that encourages you to embrace nature, even at mealtimes. With 19 city beaches, many with eateries overlooking the water, al fresco dining is the norm. Scarborough Beach Sunset Markets is a bustling hive of food trucks with a crimson backdrop.
2. Explore on two wheels
Ride like the sea breeze (aka the Fremantle Doctor for its daily dose of refresh) along the city's favourite bike trails: City Cycle, Cottesloe Beach, and Fremantle to Walter Point. Free bike hire is a perk when you're a guest at Alex Hotel in Northbridge or The Hougoumont in Fremantle.
3. Cruise the swan river
Cruising the Swan River with Captain Cook Cruises allows you to blend sightseeing, food, and wine with transportation to the Swan Valley or Fremantle. Want to mix biking with cruising? Pedal your way down the river on a tour with Perth Water Bike Co.
Three places to immerse yourself in nature
1. rottnest island.
Rottnest Island is adored by both locals and travellers alike. Although there are 63 beaches and 20 bays to choose from, there's more to Rotto (local lingo) than its sandy coastline. Deep dive into indigenous culture with Go Cultural Aboriginal Tours and Experiences, exhaust your legs with a bike rental from Pedal & Flipper, grab a selfie with the world-famous quokkas, or take to the skies with Skydive Geronimo.
2. Shoalwater Marine Park
Animal lovers flock to Shoalwater Marine Park for its natural encounters with Perth fauna. Perth Wildlife Encounters are the experts of the region, and they will know exactly where to take you so you can experience swimming with dolphins, feeding tiny penguins, and meeting frolicking sea lions.
3. Nambung National Park
When the sun softens into the Indian Ocean, let the stargazing in the desert begin. Adams Pinnacle Tours takes you to Nambung National Park, home to the weird and wonderful Pinnacle Desert, a very sci-fi looking park full of limestone formations.
Trailfinders can help you to organise your adventure in Western Australia's nature with their itinerary ideas and expert help.
Three cultural experiences
1. see kings park through indigenous eyes.
Walk through Karrgatup (Kings Park) with a Noongar elder and traditional landowner, Walter McGuire as he shares his peoples' history, ancient customs, dreamtime stories, songs, and the Noongar language. You'll also get to see some of the 3,000 different species of native flora such as the kangaroo paw and banksia.
2. Study street art on a walking tour
Award-winning tour operator, Two Feet and a Heartbeat excel at themed walking tours that intrigues interest with juicy tales of yesteryear. Not only will you discover Perth's past and street art as you're led down alleys and laneways, but you'll also be privy to coffee haunts, and hidden cocktail bars.
3. Explore the WA Museum Boola Bardip
As the state's crown jewel of culture, history, and art, the WA Museum Boola Bardip invites you to an afternoon of immersion. The museum is enjoying an architectural renaissance since its 2020 make-over integrated heritage buildings with a new contemporary building to create an inclusive space that celebrates indigenous stories and Western Australia history. Entry is free.
Where to stay in Perth
Rebecca Buttall, Trailfinders’ Destination Manager for Australia, has picked her top three great stays...
The Hougoumont
All aboard The Hougoumont, a contemporary, chic four-star hotel in the heart of Fremantle named after the last ship to bring convicts to the port city. Rates include wine and cheese, tea and toast, and unlimited fruit in the Lobby Lounge.
Pan Pacific Perth
Ideally located on the free bus route to Perth's CBD, the Pan Pacific Perth offers comfortable guest rooms and suites, fitness centre, swimming pool, and five dining options, including the vegan-focussed, Ten Acre Block.
COMO the Treasury
A stay at COMO The Treasury, located in Perth's fashionable State Buildings, offers absolute opulence. All 48 rooms are unique and feature city, courtyard or garden views. Its highly-regarded restaurant serves dishes revolving around the indigenous six seasons and its boutiques sells some of WA’s finest products from wine to chocolates.
Trailfinders can organise your Perth hotel and all the components to ensure an exceptional holiday to Perth and Western Australia.
Where to eat in Perth
For breakfast.
Head to Odyssea City Beach for some wake-up favourites like Bircher with poached fruits or avocado on flatbread as the sprawling beach beckons you to a post-breakfast walk.
Quench your thirst with a pint at Australia's birthplace of craft beer, Little Creatures as you wash down wood-fired pizzas and share plates of Fremantle octopus and frites.
On the verge of Elizabeth Quay, Hearth is known for its luxurious surrounds and skill for creating fire-grilled dishes showcasing fresh, seasonal Western Australian produce.
How to spend two days in Perth
Rise and shine with the sun for an early morning stroll around Kings Park with a coffee from the Botanical Cafe. Be sure to visit the Botanic Gardens and the Lotterywest Federation walk for city and river views. Keep exploring and learning with a free visit to the WA Museum Boola Bardip to get a sense of place as you browse through WA's history and culture.
Hop on the train to Fremantle for fish and chips at Fishing Boat Harbour and a cold craft beer at Little Creatures. Every visit to Fremantle must include a guided tour of the World Heritage-listed Fremantle Prison where you'll hear tales of escape and hardship as you walk the haunted halls of this convict-built goal. When you're feeling peckish, head directly to the historical Fremantle Markets for herbal iced tea or ice cream.
As the sun sets over the Indian Ocean, the sky becomes a canvas of colour. Choose to stay in Fremantle for cocktails on Bathers Beach or take the train to Cottesloe for pasta and wine at il Lido.
Board the Rottnest Express bound for Rottnest Island (ferry and bike packages are available) at Barrack Street Jetty for a 90 minute cruise down the Swan River and over the ocean. Upon arrival, grab a pastry or pie from Rottnest Bakery before heading to award-winning Skydive Geronimo for a next-level adventure.
Refuel your body with made-to-order pizza at Frankie's on Rotto, located in the Thomson Bay Settlement. Cycling is the favourite mode of transportation on this mostly car-free island but be warned, you're legs will get a workout. Hire snorkel gear from Pedal & Flipper to make the most of your beach stops. Quokkas, mini marsuipals with a big smile found only in WA, are a drawcard. Do not touch or feed the animals. Save time for a refreshing local ale or Margaret River Chardonnay at the Rottnest Hotel, a five-minute walk from the main jetty where the ferry takes you back to Perth.
Back on the mainland, start planning the rest of your time in Perth over dinner at Elizabeth Quay. Maybe a Swan Valley wine tour or swimming with the dolphins in Rockingham?

Best Time to Visit Perth
For sunny and warm weather I would recommend planning your trip to Perth during the summer, from Nov – Feb. Perth sees very little rainfall throughout these months and you’re pretty much guaranteed to have blue skies and sunshine. This is ideal for hitting the beach which is one of the best things to do in Perth !
The summer can also see some extremely hot days of temperatures in the high 30’s and even 40’s. If you’re sensitive to heat, visiting Perth during the shoulder season in October or March would be a better idea.
Getting Around Perth
Perth and its surrounding suburbs are fairly spread out. If you’re spending five or more days in Perth, I would highly recommend hiring a car . This will give you much more flexibility and allow you to explore further afield as well as take day trips. Check prices and availability for your car rental here .
In terms of getting around the city, travelling to Fremantle, going to the beach, and visiting Rottnest Island, this is all easy to do via train, bus or ferry. Find more info about planning your journey and booking your tickets on the official Transperth website .
You might be interested in purchasing tickets for the hop-on-hop-off sightseeing bus. This ticket lasts for 48 hours and includes unlimited access to the double decker bus that stops at all of the city’s top attractions. It also covers your entry to the Bell Tower which includes a guided tour and the chance to ring one of the bells yourself!

You may not have time to see everything listed here, but ticking off a few of these highlights will make a great start to your time in Perth.
Elizabeth Quay from above
Elizabeth Quay
Taking a stroll around Perth’s scenic waterfront complex offers the perfect intro to the city. Located right on the banks of the Swan River, Elizabeth Quay is home to many popular bars, restaurants, art installations and various events throughout the year. If you hop on the ferry from Elizabeth Quay, you’ll end up at the South Perth foreshore which an excellent spot to take a photo looking back at the city and river.
A short walk from Elizabeth Quay will bring you to the Bell Tower, one of Perth’s most famous icons. From the top of the tower you’ll see a stunning panoramic view over the Swan River. Learn the fascinating history behind the collection of bells that dates back to 14th century London. They were gifted to Western Australia on the Bicentennial celebration of 1988.
Purchase your ticket to the Bell Tower online before you go. The ticket also includes the chance to participate in the interactive bell ringing experience. You can’t leave Perth without a photo to prove you rang a bell in the Bell Tower!
The iconic Perth Bell Tower
Swan River Cruise
Enjoy the picturesque scenery of Perth from a different perspective. Sit back and relax with a drink and take in the amazing views as you cruise along the Swan River listening to the captain’s commentary. Taking a Swan River Cruise is a must when visiting Perth!
Cruises depart at multiple times throughout the day from either Barrack Street Jetty in Perth or Fremantle. I recommend booking this activity online in advance during peak season. Check cruise times and ticket availability here .
If you don’t get a chance to do a river cruise, a stroll along the Swan River is also a great way to take in the scenery. Make your way to the river and follow the path that takes you along the river’s edge. You can choose to walk, cycle or roller skate here. The full Swan River Loop is 10 km, you can easily do a short section and then continue on with your sightseeing. See this map for more info.
A visit to Perth is not complete without spending some time in the one of the world’s largest inner city parks. Perched high on a hill, overlooking the city and Swan River, the views from King’s Park truly couldn’t get any better.
Getting to King’s Park is pretty easy as it’s conveniently located close to the city. Catch the 950 bus from the city centre or walk for 25 minutes to reach the entrance of the park.
Enjoying a spectacular sunset picnic in Kings Park
There are many awesome lookouts, walking trails and beautiful scenery making Kings Park a popular place for both locals and tourists. Here are some of the top things to see and do while visiting:
- Go for a walk – With no shortage of walking and cycling paths to choose from, Kings Park is an excellent place to get in your daily step count. The bonus is that you’ll have a beautiful view to look at as you go. Two of my favourites are the “Law Walk” and the “Bushland Nature Trail”, see the official site for a map and more info.
- Botanic Gardens – Showcasing the unique flora of Western Australia, this huge garden features beautiful collections of flowers and plants from all over the state. You’ll see plants and flowers growing year round but the best time to visit is during spring when the wildflowers are in full bloom. The Botanic Gardens are free and open 24 hrs per day.
- Catch a view – One of the very best views in Kings Park is undeniably found at the Lotterywest Federation Walkway. This amazing arched bridge is suspended through the tree tops of the Botanic Gardens. It’s one of the most popular attractions in the park and an the perfect spot to capture a memorable photo.
Kings Park War Memorial
- State War Memorial – At the top of Kings Park, this war memorial features an obelisk and a continuously burning flame. It was built in 1929 to honour all Australian soldiers who fought and died in the service of their country.
- DNA Tower – Don’t leave Kings Park without a quick climb up the spiral staircase for yet another panoramic view. It’s the highest view point in the park and it can be reached by walking about 15 minutes from the War Memorial.
- Festivals/Events – Through the summer there is always something fun happening at Kings Park. From outdoor concerts and movies to festivals and seasonal events, find an upcoming Kings Park event here .
- Sunset picnic – Kings Park is hands down one of the best spots for a romantic sunset picnic in Perth . It’s been one of our go-to picnic spots for years, the scenery and views here just never get old!
My first time in Kings Park as a young backpacker in 2012
London Court
In the middle of the city, between Hay Street Mall and St George’s Terrace is one of the best heritage listed attractions in Perth. Dating back to the 1930’s, this quirky alley is lined with buildings that were inspired by Tudor England.
Take a step back in time as you make your way through London Court, browsing the shops and perhaps grabbing a coffee along the way. It won’t take long to see it but it’s definitely worthy of a quick stop.
Blue Boat House
Not far from Kings Park is yet another classic Perth icon. The Blue Boat House has become an increasingly popular photography location in recent years. It’s no surprise that it happens to be one of the best Instagram spots in Perth ! At any given time of day, you’ll find people lining up to snap their very own “I’ve been to Perth” shot.
Insider’s Tip: Everyone takes photos here during the day. Visit the boat shed during sunrise or sunset to capture a more unique and dramatic scene. See our own version of the famous Blue Boat House photo below!
Boat House sunrise
Heirisson Island
Located in the middle of the Swan River, Heirisson Island is an awesome spot to meet some local wildlife. This is where you’ll come face to face with the many kangaroos who call the island home. It’s also lovely spot to go for a peaceful nature walk practically in the middle of the city!
The good thing about visiting Heirisson Island is that it’s very close to the city centre making it easy to reach. Simply hop on the 960 bus from the Perth Busport and get off at Victoria Park Transfer Stn, Heirisson Island is a short walk away. An added bonus is that it’s free to visit!
Perth Cultural Centre
If you have some time left in the day and still keen to explore a bit more, make your way over to the Perth Cultural Centre. This open space is only a short walk from the city centre. You’ll often find various events and exhibitions held here, see their website for up to date info.
It’s also home to the WA Museum and the WA Art Gallery, both of which will give you a great insight into WA’s history and culture. The museum has a number of permanent collections to see but also hosts temporary exhibits from other countries. For example, if you visit from June – November 2021, you’ll find the fascinating “Ancient Greek History” on display at the WA Museum.
Tickets: Free entrance to both attractions however donations are welcomed.
Opening Hours: WA Museum 9:30am – 5pm daily, WA Art Gallery 10am – 5pm Tuesday – Monday
Learn more about WA at the Perth Cultural Centre
Roof Top Bar
Finish off the first day of your Perth itinerary by finding a rooftop bar and sipping a few well deserved sunset cocktails. Perth has many great rooftop bars to choose from but these are a few of my favourites:
- Prince Lane
- The Reveley
- Mechanic’s Institute
Check out this 3-hour small bar tour which takes you to some of Perth’s best small bars where you’ll taste some of their signature food and drinks. Your local guide will share plenty of useful tips on where to eat and drink during your time in Perth. Find more info and book tickets here.
Wine with a view at at Prince Lane’s rooftop bar
Day Two – Wildlife Park/Beach Day
Caversham Wildlife Park
You simply can’t visit Perth without getting up close to some of Australia’s most iconic animals. Perth has a few wildlife parks to choose from but Caversham Wildlife Park is without a doubt the best one. It is more expensive to visit this park, but knowing that they have extremely high standards when it comes to the animal’s care makes it all worthwhile.
Caversham is located in the eastern suburbs of Perth. It’s easy to get to from the city centre by car or Uber however public transportation is also possible, it just takes longer. If you catch the bus from the CBD, it will take just over an hour to get there and involves changing buses along the route. See Google Maps to plan your journey.
See this tour if you wish to be taken to Caversham on an organised day trip, hotel pick up is also possible with this option.
Feeding the kangaroos at Caversham Wildlife Park
The park is divided into different sections that represent each part of Australia and the animals that live there. You’ll find pretty much every type of animal that’s native to Australia: exotic birds, crocodiles, dingos, wombats, emus, Tasmanian Devils, penguins, snakes and so much more!
It’s quite a big wildlife park and easily takes half of a day to see the entire thing. Get a feel for the park and plan out your visit by checking out this map before you go.
Caversham provides many opportunities to interact with the animals, this is where you can feed and pet kangaroos, hold koalas, and take selfies with wombats. There are also a number of daily shows and feedings to watch, check out their website for more info on events and times so you don’t miss out.
Opening Hours: 9:30am – 4:30pm daily (last entry at 3:30pm)
Tickets: $32/adult, $25/student, $15/child
Get up close to the soft and cuddly koalas
C ottesloe Beach
Once you’ve finished up at Caversham Wildlife Park, make your way straight over to the beach. Spend the rest of the day relaxing in the white sand and taking a refreshing dip in the ocean. Located in the western suburbs, Cottesloe is one of the best beaches in Perth and a great place to spend a chilled out afternoon.
Cottesloe Beach is a popular spot for swimming, snorkelling, and surfing. There are plenty of restaurants and bars near the beachfront so it’s easy to grab lunch or dinner without having to return all the way to the city. You should definitely plan to stay here to watch the sunset, after all Perth is the only Australian city where you can watch the sunset over the ocean!
Make sure to bring a picnic mat with you as there is a large grassy area where you can relax and eat without sand getting in your food. Head to one of the fish and chip shops near the beach to grab some dinner and you’re set for the perfect evening! Just watch out for those sneaky seagulls who are never afraid to hop over and steal your chips.

Little Creatures Brewery
Located along the popular strip of restaurants that lines Fremantle’s waterfront, this is arguably the most popular place to dine for lunch or dinner in Fremantle. If you’re a fan of craft beer, you won’t want to miss this gem!
Little Creatures Brewery has established a name for itself, not just in WA but people all over Australia enjoy their brews. It’s such a popular spot for locals that if you visit during the weekend, it’s often hard to find yourself a table to sit at. They operate on a first come first serve basis and bookings cannot be made.
In my opinion, the beer and food (especially their pizza) is worth the potential waiting time. For those fascinated by the beer brewing process, a guided brewery tour is available to be booked online . An expert will show you around the brewery and you’ll get a chance to taste their amazing range of beers. Check tours times and availability here .

Meet the Quokkas
The unique wildlife on Rottnest Island is one of the things that makes this place so special. More specifically, it’s the quokkas! These tiny marsupials are completely unique to Rottnest Island and cannot be found anywhere else in the world.
Quokkas roam free all over the island and aren’t afraid to approach people hoping for a hand out. Taking a “quokka selfie” is ok but it’s important to remember that touching or feeding them is not allowed.
There are fines in place for anyone who breaks the rules and the rangers won’t hesitate to enforce this if they catch you. You can get up close to them, take photos with them but please respect them, this is their home after all!
Quokkas are some of the cutest little animals in the world!
Where to Stay On Rottnest Island
Rottnest Island is a pretty special place, if you have any extra time to spare you won’t regret spending a night. This a great way to sneak in a little holiday within your holiday! On previous trips to Rottnest, we’ve always had a great stay at Karma Rottnest . It’s centrally located, has comfortable rooms with a pool and a restaurant/bar.
Another highly rated option that’s located near the beach is Discovery Rottnest . These glamping style tents allow you to camp in luxury only steps from the white sands of Pinky Beach. Right next door is the popular Pinky’s Beach Club where the sunset cocktails always go down a treat.
If you’re travelling with family and friends, booking a self-contained cabin/villa is a great way to go. The Rottnest Island Authority offers many beachfront villas, check prices and availability here .

The Ultimate 1 Week in Perth Travel Itinerary
Where should I stay in Perth?
First things first, let’s get your accommodation sorted for the week! There are obviously loads of options to choose from. But I’ve done my research, and here are my top recommendations for an epic stay when you visit Perth, no matter your budget.
- Doubletree By Hilton Perth Northbridge ( HOTEL )- Since it opened in 2018, this beautiful, perfectly-located Perth hotel has earned a reputation as one of the top picks in the city. It boasts super comfortable rooms, a concierge service, and an unbelievable rooftop pool. Despite being the height of luxury, the rooms are actually really affordable (especially for Australian standards), and a full week here won’t break the bank.
- Hostel G Perth ( HOSTEL ) – Who said visiting Perth had to be expensive? Hostel G Perth features air-conditioned rooms, free bike rental, WiFi and a shared lounge. Boasting a bar, the hostel is also close to several noted attractions. It is around 1.4 km from Perth Concert Hall, 700 meters from Perth Train Station and 800 meters from State Theatre Centre of Western Australia.
Top tip: If you want to make your perfect Perth itinerary a bit more special, you can also go glamping. Check out all my favorite Perth Glamping spots . Trust me when I say glamping in Perth is worth springing for

How do I get around Perth?
Like most major Australian cities, Perth is a breeze to get around. The city boasts a well-serviced rail network, which services all major landmarks and beyond, as well as regular busses and a great ferry network. Perth’s answer to a rail card is the Transperth SmartRider card . You will need one of these to use all aforementioned public transport options, and the card is super easy to top up with money as you need. Just tap on and off as you board and disembark public transport. Students and concession card holders also receive significant discounts on the SmartRider card.
Much like other major cities across the country, Perth also has a handy “Free Transit Zone” in the CBD. Travelling within this zone is free of charge – just make sure to still tap on and tap off!
If you’re visiting Perth for the first time, definitely consider buying a pass for the Perth Explorer , the city’s hop on-hop off bus service. This tourist-friendly network services all major landmarks and destinations and is a great way to maximise your time in the Western Australia capital. These bus trips act as local tours of the city, lead by friendly and experienced guides.
If you’d prefer to take your Perth transport into your own hands, you can rent a car at Perth Airport, or take advantage of the many car rental agencies across the city.
Finally, Perth has an extensive network of rideshare options that include Uber and Lyft.
No matter where you’re going in Perth, you can rest easy knowing that getting it will be hassle-free thanks to Perth’s great transport network.
Day 1: Welcome to Perth, Western Australia!
It’s your first day in Perth, and whether you’ve flown in from overseas or interstate, take it easy today and become accustomed to your new location by sticking to the city limits. While the vibe of Perth is described by many as similar to that of a big country town, that doesn’t mean that this state capital is short on anything its Australian east coast cousins have in spades.
Enjoy a wander through Kings Park , just a short distance from Perth CBD. The city park is a popular waterside destination that pays homage to the area’s indigenous history. There’s also a War Memorial, multiple lookout points with exceptional views, and a ton of local flora and fauna to enjoy. You can easily spend all day exploring different parts of this park, and you’ll likely encounter dozens of people enjoying picnics, sunbathing and simply enjoying their day. Spending some time in Kings Park was actually my favorite thing I did in the city, so don’t miss this place.
What should I do in Perth at night?
Head down to Elizabeth Quay , a waterfront complex in the heart of the city that offers great shopping and dining opportunities! There is almost always something exciting going on, and it will provide an excellent first impression of Perth as a city.
Make sure to check the schedule for different live music events, art shows, food markets, and so much more! It’s a fantastic place to grab dinner, a few drinks, and then see where the night takes you!
What are the best Perth restaurants?
After a day of walking around and stretching your cramped post-flight legs, I bet you’ve worked up quite the appetite. My recommendations for a top meal in Perth should give you a solid idea of where to satisfy your hunger all across the city…
- La Cholita offers a Mexican feast to rival the best in the biz. Fun, friendly and open until 2am on Friday and Saturday nights, Northbridge’s La Cholita is sure to satisfy your late-night fish taco and tequila hankering.
- Vans Café in Cottesloe has been around for eons – and for a good reason. This eatery offers breakfast, lunch, dinner and drinks in a chilled-out, open-plan bistro. I personally recommend the Angus sirloin steak, as I’ve enjoyed it myself!
- No Mafia in Northbridge has a cheeky name and an impressive authentic Italian menu. Italian Australians have added so much to the food scene, and No Mafia is Perth’s testament to that. Check out their imported Italian wine list.
- Lady of Ro is a Subiaco favorite and offers the chance to sample some of the West Coast’s mouthwatering fresh seafood. It serves up local specials like king prawns and octopus late into the night.
- Lucky Chan’s Laundry & Noodle Bar is another Northbridge classic – man, that area has some great bars and restaurants! Lucky Chan’s boasts some of the best Asian food in Perth, a funky laundry-inspired interior and a chilled rooftop bar.
Day 2: Hike, Bike & Walk Through Perth City
If you love getting out and about in nature and you enjoy nothing more than working up a sweat while you’re at it, you will adore Perth. This compact city is jam-packed with excellent walking trails accompanied by beautiful backdrops. So many, in fact, that it was hard for me to pick just a few for you.
Where are the best walking trails in Perth?
These are just a few of my own recommendations for the best walking trails in Perth, but wherever you find yourself in this beautiful city, you can guarantee there is a natural wonder to discover not too far away…
Bells Rapids Walk Trail, 40 minutes from Perth Centre, is a fan favorite and a piece of cake to complete at only 1.5 miles (2.5km). This trail is less about hitting your daily steps goal and more about appreciating the local landscape, with the serene Swan River behind you offering unbeatable photo ops.
Zamia Trail is located right in the heart of Perth in Bold Park and is 3.1 miles (5km) of city and sea landscapes, making it worth every step. This looped trail starts and ends at the same point, Reabold Hill, which is also the city’s highest natural point. Wear your good walking shoes for this one!
Ghost House Trail Walk is less spooky than its name implies but alludes to what remains of the “Ghost House” you can spot along the way. This bush trail is an all-day affair for those that are keen walkers and lies within the Yanchep National Park. You wouldn’t even know you are just an hour from Perth CBD!
If you’re looking to get those legs pumping in East Perth, head over to the Goat Farm Mountain Bike Park . It’s the ultimate biking experience for adrenaline seekers, as you wind and glide through the semi-arid desert just beyond Perth’s city limits.
Day 3: Perth Island Hopping Explorations
If you can’t make it to Greece or Croatia to island hop this summer, Perth should be a good consolation…
While the many state capitals of Australia’s East Coast all border the Pacific Ocean, the state of Western Australia has the vast Indian Ocean all to itself. And it makes for one of the best backdrops on the planet.
If you only have 3 days in Perth, island hopping is the perfect way to cap it off.
Rottnest Island
If there’s one thing you absolutely must do during your time in Australia, it’s taking a day trip out to Rottnest Island to explore its stunning beaches, bays, and wildlife. It is a well-known Perth attraction, and a protected nature reserve conveniently located just 25 minutes by ferry from Fremantle and 90 minutes by ferry from Perth.
“Rotto,” to locals, sees a year-round influx of visitors to its shores, and its tiny permanent population of 300 swells during the holiday season to around 15,000. Visit the famous native quokkas, do a walking or biking tour of the island, or snorkel, sail, and swim in the turquoise waters. The swells off Strickland Bay are considered some of the best for surfing in the entire world.
There are no cars on Rottnest Island (besides a public transportation bus system and emergency vehicles), so the best way to explore the island is on two wheels. While it is certainly difficult to bike around the entire island in just one day, it is technically possible. My friend Damien and I only saw a half of it, but we also went on a rainy day and spent a fair amount of time snorkeling!
Here are two of my top Rottnest Island recommended tours and experiences:
- Rottnest Island Same-Day Round-Trip Ferry Transfers | “Explore Rottnest Island at your leisure with round-trip fast ferry service from Hillarys Boat Harbour. Complimentary hotel pick-up is available.”
- From Perth: Rottnest Island Bike and Ferry Combo | “Cycle around Rottnest Island and discover the sandy settlement by pedal power. Benefit from round-trip transfers by ferry and bike around the car-free island at your own pace. Complimentary hotel pick-up is available from selected Perth CBD locations.”
Penguin & Seal Island
If you’ve already ticked “Rotto” off your Perth bucket list, consider adding Seal Island or Penguin Island to it. Named quite literally for the local animals that call the islands their home, these beautiful spots are part of the greater Shoalwater Islands Marine Park, located only 45 minutes from Perth.
You can book round-trip ferry transfers to the islands, but I’d highly recommend booking one of the tours below to learn a bit more about what makes this area so special.
- Rockingham: 1-hour Shoalwater Islands Tour & Penguin Island | “Enjoy the scenic highlights of the Shoalwater Islands Marine Park during a 1-hour glass bottom boat cruise that explores the ruggedly spectacular coastlines of Penguin, Seal & Bird Islands and takes advantage of the best wildlife spotting opportunities.”
- Winter, Wildlife & Seafood Cruise | “Enjoy the scenic highlights of the Shoalwater Islands Marine Park and keep a lookout for the wildlife. This 60-minute glass-bottom boat cruise takes in the ruggedly spectacular coastlines of Penguin, Seal & Bird Islands and takes advantage of the best wildlife spotting opportunities of the day. Wild dolphins, rare Australian sea lions, pelican rookeries, and birds of prey are regularly sighted and our friendly crew will get you right amongst the action! After your tour enjoy a fresh fish and chip lunch at Pengos Cafe.”
Day 4: Exploring Perth’s Beaches
Welcome to Day 4 in Perth! I hope you’re having fun so far! It’s been a busy few days, so now’s the time to kick back and soak up some of those Aussie rays from one of Perth’s many famous beaches. Just make sure to slip, slop and slap as the sun Down Under can have a gnarly bite to it!
What is the best beaches in Perth?
Perhaps Perth’s most famous stretch of sand, Cottesloe Beach , is worth its weight in excellent reviews and is part of what is commonly referred to as “The Sunset Coast.” It’s a nod to the majestic Indian Ocean sunsets you can expect here.
Just 15 minutes from Perth CBD, Cottesloe Beach has clean sand, clear water, and a long line of local cafes, bars, and restaurants, a stone’s throw from the water. It’s ideal for surfing, swimming, bodyboarding, or just lazing the day away and is one of Perth’s most popular beaches!
Cottesloe Beach – Photo via Flickr | borkazoid
Scarborough Beach is 20 minutes from the city center but has the vibe of a relaxed coastal town. The beach itself is perfect for adventure seekers and those just looking to chill out, not to mention the nightlife in the surrounding area is electric. It is, however, home to some of the most hazardous waves in Perth, so stay between the flags and be cautious.
Tucked away on the north coast of Perth, Mullaloo Beach is quieter than its aforementioned coastal cousins, with perfect waters and clean, soft sand. This is a great spot for a relaxed BBQ – Aussie style – on the grass recreation area behind the beach. Just don’t mention throwing another “shrimp on the Barbie” to locals. Besides, they don’t call them “shrimp” – they call them “prawns.”

Lastly, I would definitely recommend a trip to the Lancelin Sand Dunes if you’re looking for a different type of boarding fun. Approximately 90 minutes from Perth, Lancelin is a huge area populated with massive sand dunes, some up to three stories high! Sandboarding here is a fun way to spend a few hours, and you can rent the boards on-site dirt cheap.
While you may want to dedicate a full day to this fun day trip, you could also do it on your own after some time on Perth’s beaches! It’s also known for being an amazing place to watch the Milky Way dance in the sky at night! It really just depends on your budget and if this type of unique activity interests you. I would definitely recommend it!
If you’re keen on a sunset experience of the Lancelin Sand Dunes, check out this epic tour:
From Perth: Pinnacles Desert Sunset & Star-Gazing Tour | “Discover the magic of the Pinnacles Desert and the Swan Valley on an 11-hour guided tour. Head to the heart of the Swan Valley to visit an award-winning winery and sample wine, honey and chocolate. Head west to the Turquoise Coast and keep an eye out for native wildlife. Stop in Lancelin for a walk along the beach. Experience the thrill of sandboarding down giant sand dunes. Board the bus and visit Nilgen Lookout for views over the Indian Ocean. Enjoy dinner at the Observation Deck in the Pinnacles Desert, accompanied by a glass of Margaret River wine. See the sun set over the Indian Ocean and later marvel at the stars with the help of astro binoculars and a telescope.”

Day 5: Venture Out To Harbourside Fremantle
You’ve now spent a jam-packed 4 days in Perth, but your time in the city is only going to get better from here, trust me!
Australians really like to shorten names. To some of my Aussie friends, I’m “Davo”, and I just talked about “Rotto” Island and “Cotto” Beach. So, I’ll give you three guesses about what they call the Harbourside city of Fremantle….
You guessed it: “Freo”.
The AFL (Australian football or “footy”) team that hails from here, the Fremantle Dockers, say it repeatedly in their team song. Oh, I miss Australia…but I digress.
What should I do in Fremantle?
Fremantle is a port city that’s technically part of the greater Perth area, but for all intents and purposes, it really is its own little part of the world. Located on the Swan River, Fremantle is warm, friendly, and has so much to do you could easily spend a few days here. In recent years, Fremantle has transformed itself into a hip hotspot, a magnet for creative folk, and a Mecca for cool cafes, bars, and restaurants.
The historic Fremantle Markets should be your first “port” of call (see what I did there?), where you can pick up fresh local produce or handmade artistic wares to take home as souvenirs. The trendiest of the Fremantle Markets has to be the E-Shed Markets — a weekend get-together right on the waterfront.
A tour of Fremantle Prison shouldn’t be passed on either. Choose from a range of tours where you can learn about its convict history, or even put on a hard hat and discover the maze of tunnels underneath the Fremantle Prison. If you’re game, their “Torchlight Tour” is a spine-tingling nighttime option.
After a day of being on your feet exploring your newfound surroundings, it’s high time for a pint or two. And no trip to Freo is complete without a trip to the Aussie institution, Little Creatures Brewing . Found near the South Perth Foreshore, Little Creatures has wet the whistles of Aussies for almost 20 years, and the crew here call themselves “Hop Heads.” Enjoy their brews right at the source. Just be sure to get an Uber back to your hotel when you’re all “hopped up.”
Read this article titled A Day in Fremantle for more information about what you should do in “Freo, where to eat and other recommendations for this chilled out, hip little hub.
Day 6: Wine Tasting On The Margaret River
Widely known as one of Australia’s most beautiful wine regions, Margaret River is worth an overnight trip on your visit to Perth or even a long weekend. That said, it’s also a popular day trip from Perth that I’d highly recommend if you love beautiful scenery and Aussie wine – who doesn’t?!
A three-hour drive south of Perth along the coast, this region – with the iconic town of Margaret River as its center – has it all. Top-notch local food, world-famous wine, craft breweries, an incredible coastline, farmers’ markets, natural caves and walking trails … it’s all here, just waiting to be discovered. Despite developing a trendy reputation over the years, the Margaret River region still has the laid-back Aussie vibe we all desire on a lazy wine-tasting weekend.
Some of the top spots to visit in the Margaret River region include these fantastic wineries…
- Cullen Wines | With a carbon-positive wine cellar and a location steeped in the Wadandi Peoples’ culture, this is a wine experience like no other. Cullen Wines offer an array of bespoke wine-tasting opportunities, so get ready to taste some of the best Western Australian offerings.
- Domaine Naturaliste | Its tasting room open to vast views of the Merlot vineyard, and boy, is it spectacular. While the wines are the main event, you can’t go wrong pairing them with the winery’s epic cheese and charcuterie boards. Trust me.
- Howard Park | For something of an Aussie icon, head over to this family-run winery for a unique experience. The building itself has won awards for its architecture, and its robust Cabernet Sauvignon (“Cab Sav” to Aussies) is a highlight.
While there’s a never-ending supply of fantastic wineries in the Margaret River region, you may not have all the time in the world to stop in at them all. If you are strapped for time, join this Margaret River wine tour , where day drinking is what it’s all about.
Top Tip: The Margaret River region may all be about wine, but it also has a magical lake Cave. It usually goes unnoticed by most visitors, so taking a Lake Cave tour is sure to be a quiet and memorable local experience.
Where should I stay in the Margaret River region?
If you can, try and make a couple of days of it and stay at one of these Margaret River hotels…
- Margaret River Resort is a charming hotel located right in the heart of town and a short stroll from the riverbank.
- Margarets Beach Resort is a bit of a drive from town, but these super spacious and clean self-contained apartments are only a few minutes walk from tranquil Gnarabup Beach.
- Heritage Trail Lodge is the place in Margaret River to truly treat yourself. Luxury suites with a double spa bath, in-room spa treatments and a private hiking trail on your doorstep are just a few of the perks.
Day 7: Bond With Local Wildlife
If you decide against making the out to spend a couple of nights down in Margaret River, you’ll have plenty of time to explore more of Perth! And what better way to enjoy your last day in Perth than getting up close and personal with some of the cute and cuddly (and sometimes scary!) animals that Australia is known for?
I love visiting wildlife sanctuaries in Australia and seeing the great work they do in the name of conservation. Luckily, Perth has no shortage of spots for animal lovers to visit.
What are the best wildlife sanctuaries in Perth?
Perth Zoo is home to a large number of native Australian animals as well as foreign ones. It is known for its successful western swamp tortoise and numbat breeding program. The Perth Zoo is in the southern region of the city, and it’s easy to get here by train, bus, ferry, or even by foot!
Another must-visit is the Perth AQWA Aquarium . You’ll find it along the Hillarys Boat Harbor (30 minutes from Perth CBD). It puts a firm focus on the weird and wonderful marine life that inhabit Perth’s ocean waters. Expect creatures like fiddler rays, starfish, jellyfish and sharks.
Around 30 minutes from Perth CBD, Caversham Wildlife Park is a great destination to visit animals in their natural habitats, with opportunities to say “G’day” up close and personal. The Caversham Wildlife Park is a charming little spot that gives you a chance to feed animals in the farmyard, see sheep shearers hard at work, or watch sheepdogs working their magic.
Lesser known but absolutely worth a mention, a trip to Heirisson Island will strike a chord with any true animal lover. An island of Perth’s Swan River, Heirisson is a kangaroo sanctuary where the roos are looked after and fed by loving keepers. It’s a wild and free habitat for them to roam, but be mindful not to get too loud around them as they are easily startled.
Where are the best nightclubs in Perth?
You didn’t actually think I’d forget about the city’s eclectic nightlife, did you? You don’t know me very well, then!
There are tons of fun Perth festivals to rave at, but if you’re not visiting during the epic weekends they fall on, these pumping bars and clubs are the next best thing…
- Jack Rabbit Slim’s | With live music early in the night, and a dance-till-you-drop atmosphere later on, this groovy spot along Aberdeen Street is a vibe for everyone. Their “Power Rave Juice” will keep you going all night.
- Magnet House | With a trippy array of LED-lit walls, ceilings, and dance floors, Magnet House is a ravers haven along Murray Street. They also have a rock’n’roll set-up at the joining stage Amplifier, so you really are spoilt for choice.
- Geisha Bar | For my fellow EDM and techno enthusiasts, head to James Street in hip Northbridge for an intimate night with some hard-partying Aussies. Geisha Bar regularly hosts international artists, so get ready for a pumping experience.
Don’t Forget Travel Insurance On Your 1 Week Perth Itinerary
Whether you are heading to Perth for just a few days, or embarking on a lengthy trip around Australia, travel insurance is absolutely essential. Have you seen some of the crazy animals they have Down Under, or indeed, how expensive things can be in Australia?
Getting sick or having items stolen while traveling is rare, but when it does happen, it can be an absolute nightmare. Having insurance (which is essential to get visas for some countries) will give you the peace of mind that if anything terrible does happen, you are covered and taken care of.
I highly recommend HeyMondo due to their extensive range of cover for all situations and trip lengths and their fair pricing. They also have a handy app that allows you to not only manage any claims within the app, but also access free assistance online. This means you don’t need to rack up an expensive phone bill while abroad, or waste time on hold.
So, whether you need single trip cover or affordable annual cover for multiple trips, be sure to buy your travel insurance before you travel, leaving you to relax during your trip knowing that HeyMondo has your back. Nowadays, I would never travel without insurance, especially after hearing so many (expensive and dangerous) horror stories from other travelers that I’ve met!
Did I Miss Anything On My Perth 7 Days Itinerary?
I hope my that this Perth itinerary has inspired you to book your own trip to the city, or given you some unique ideas to add to your own itinerary. If you think I’ve left anything out or missed an essential Perth activity that should be on the list, let me know. I’m always looking to improve my itineraries to offer the best experience possible to my fellow travellers. And who knows, I may even bump into you during my next trip to Perth!

Ultimate Perth Itinerary: Fun 3, 5 and 7 Day Itineraries
The relaxed coastal city of Perth, the capital of Western Australia, often gets overlooked by its eastern Australian counterparts like Melbourne and Sydney. As a local who has lived in Perth my entire life, let me get you in on the secret – Perth is so underrated!
With some of the best beaches in Australia, hot summers and mild winters, hip suburbs, funky small bars and some amazing day trips, a trip to Perth offers an interesting variety of unique things to do and see for visitors.
In this guide, I’ve carefully crafted the ULTIMATE Perth travel itinerary. With a 3, 5 and even 7 day Perth itinerary, there’s something for all visitors. Regardless of whether it’s your first time in Perth or a return visit, I’ve got you covered in this ultimate itinerary for Perth travellers.
Table of Contents
Quick Summary: Itinerary in Perth (3, 5 and 7 Day Options)
Here’s a quick summary of the best Perth itineraries for various duration stays. For more details on each day and recommended places to see, things to do and places to eat, keep on reading below.
Perth 3 Day Itinerary
- Day 1: Perth CBD & Kings Park Botanic Garden
- Day 2: Fremantle
- Day 3: Rottnest Island
Perth 5 Day Itinerary
- Day 4: Swan Valley
- Day 5: Day Trip to Lancelin and the Pinnacles
Perth 7 Day Itinerary
- Day 6: Beach Day
- Day 7: Perth Hills
Best Time to Visit
One of the (many) things I love about Perth is that you can visit all year round!
Perth winters are generally fairly mild – which can mean sometimes you luck out with sunny days and 20 degrees Celsius high (or more).
However, as many of the best things around Perth are nature-based activities, the most popular time to visit is during the summer months of December – February.
Personally, I think the shoulder months of March-May and September – November are a great time to explore Perth. Prices and crowds are lower (although, it’s worth noting a “crowded” Perth is still miles behind what you would consider crowded in other cities across the country and the world!).
One thing to be aware of is the Australian school holiday periods, which can be found here .
In particular, the Christmas and New Year period, and the Easter school holidays in April, are exceptionally busy times of the year to travel in Perth. If visiting during these times, make sure to book your accommodation in advance.
How to Get Around Perth
Getting around the Perth CBD and neighbouring suburbs is fairly easy using public transport, including the free inner city network of CAT buses .
Taxis, Uber and other rideshare services are also plentiful in Perth. For my 3 and 5 days Perth itinerary, a car is not strictly necessary to get around.
However, if you’d like to explore beyond Perth, or go for a self-drive road trip to places like the Lancelin Sand Dunes, the Pinnacles Desert or even the Margaret River Wine Region, then a car will be required to get around.
For car rental hire, I recommend Discover Cars to browse and compare the best prices from different companies across Perth.
Where to Stay in Perth
If it’s your first time in Perth, I recommend staying in or near the Perth CBD for easy access to the main attractions.
- Budget – Citadines St Georges Terrace
- Mid Range – Art Series the Adnate
- Apartment Hotel – Quest Mounts Bay Road
- Luxury – Ritz-Carlton Perth
If you plan on hiring a car, parking is limited in the CBD and can be expensive. Consider staying across from the CBD in picturesque South Perth, or the inner CBD suburb of Subiaco.
- Mid-Range – Tribe Subiaco
- Apartment Hotel – Quest South Perth Foreshore
- Luxury – Vibe Hotel Subiaco
I’ve included a few of my favourite hotel options above, or check out my full guide for the best places to stay across Perth .

3 Day Perth Itinerary
Day 1 – explore perth cbd and kings park.
Spend your first full day in Perth exploring the Perth CBD and the nature haven of Kings Park Botanic Garden.
This itinerary is very walkable. You can also buy a 24-hour hop-on hop-off bus ticket . This service does a loop around the Perth CBD and King’s Park every hour during the day, stopping at the main attractions and reducing the amount of walking.
Start your day with a coffee from one of Perth’s stellar coffee shops, such as La Veen King St, Standing Room Only or Smooth Operator (only open Monday – Friday).
Spend the morning wandering around Elizabeth Quay , which offers a great viewpoint looking back at the city skyline from Elizabeth Quay Bridge. You’ll also spot the distinctive arched Spanda sculpture.
Walk across the bridge to the Bell Tower – you can head up into the bell tower to admire 360-degree views from the observation deck and take part in an interactive bell chiming experience.
Book skip-the-line tickets here
From here, make a beeline to Hay St Mall via London Court.
London Court is a little slice of old-English vibes, reminiscent of Diagon Alley, in the heart of the Perth CBD. Wander along and browse the small boutiques, and often you’ll find seasonal displays lining the open-air alleyway above.
At this end of London Court, keep an eye out for the clockwork display when it reaches the hour on the clock. You’re now standing on one of the Perth CBD’s two main shopping streets, Hay Street Mall.
Spend some time browsing the shops on Hay Street and Murray Street Malls.
For a guided tour of the city, I highly recommend a walking tour with Oh Hey WA. I’ve had the pleasure of joining Adie, the owner of the business, on both her Perth City and Perth Small Bar tours.
What I loved about these small group tours is that, even as a local who has lived in Perth my whole life, I discovered new things about my city!
Adie and her team of guides are very personable, friendly and informative. Their walking tours are a great way to get acquainted with Perth and discover what the city has to offer – that you won’t find in a normal guidebook!
- Ultimate Perth Walking Tour: History, Architecture, Art + Local Insights (morning)
- Perth Bar + Street Art Tour: Hidden Secrets, Laneways + Good Times (afternoon/ evening)
Save your feet from all the walking and join a segway tour around the river.
You’ll zoom past the Bell Tower, through Elizabeth Quay and explore one of the inner city parks with a hidden waterfall on this 1-hour guided tour.
Read the glowing reviews of this fun tour here .
In the afternoon, you can have a few options.
You could walk across to Northbridge and spend a few hours at the WA Museum Boola Bardip (tickets $15/adult), the Art Gallery of Western Australia or play a game of mini golf at Holey Moley.
Northbridge is a great spot for an afternoon drink in the sunshine – check out the range of locally brewed beers at Northbridge Brewing Co or the tucked away rooftop bar at Mechanics Institute.
Alternatively, walk or catch the free CAT bus to East Perth.
Walk across the Matagarup Bridge to Optus Stadium. Some fun activities to do include a zipline over the Swan River from the bridge or a guided behind-the-scenes stadium tour .
I’ve done the bridge climb and zipline twice now, and it’s such an exhilarating experience. You can watch a video from my experience below and book tickets here .
@tessomewhere Take 2 at Matagarup zip + climb! This time we did the express zip which has a shorter climb but still the same adrenalin pumping zip line over swan river! $99 for 90 mins #perthactivities #adrenaline #zipline #bridgeclimb #perthsummer ♬ original sound – Tess | Adventure Travel
You’ll also find the Perth Mint in East Perth, where you can learn about Western Australia’s gold rush, view the largest gold coin ever made and watch molten gold being poured into a gold bar.
Book your entrance tickets to the Perth Mint here .
In the late afternoon, make your way to Kings Park Botanic Garden . One of the world’s largest inner city parks, Kings Park is an iconic destination in Perth. Over 400 hectares in size, it is a biodiversity hotspot with untamed native bushland as well as cultivated gardens with large grassy areas.
I like to start by walking along Fraser Avenue, admiring the sweeping view of the Perth CBD and Swan River before reaching the State War Memorial that stands testament to Australians who have given their lives for this country.
Meander along past the giant boab tree, and wander across the Lotterywest Federation Walkway, a glass walkway suspended among the treetops.
The lawn near the State War Memorial and Frasers Ave is a great spot to watch the sunset. Alternatively, head down to Elizabeth Quay for a drink at The Reveley or The Island to celebrate the end of a great day out exploring the city.
A popular tourist attraction is the iconic Blue Boat Shed located on the banks of the Swan River near Kings Park. You’ll often see a line of visitors wanting to take a photo in front of the cute over-water building. Visit before or after exploring Kings Park. Discover more Instagrammable locations around Perth here.
Where to Eat
- Petition Kitchen: Petition is one of the many dining options in the beautiful restored heritage State Buildings complex. Long Chim (Thai) and Post (Italian) are also popular options.
- La Cholita: a funky, lively restaurant serving up some of Perth’s best Mexican in Northbridge
- The Standard: A hip bar and restaurant in Northbridge with a delightful 2-level garden bar
- Meat & Wine Co: sophisticated steak house in the heart of Perth’s CBD
- Angel Falls Grill: a small restaurant serving up delicious Venezuelan cuisine in a tucked-away alleyway
- Hifumiya Udon Noodle House: this hidden restaurant transports me back to Japan. They hand-make their udon noodles and are always buzzing at lunchtime (open for lunch only).
Day 2 – Discover the Port Town of Fremantle
Today you’ll be exploring the vibrant hub of Fremantle, about a 30-minute drive from the Perth CBD.
You can jump on the train, with the Fremantle line departing from Perth station, or take a scenic cruise along the Swan River to arrive at the historic port town of Fremantle.
Wander along the “cappuccino strip” of Market Street until you reach Fremantle Markets .
This bustling indoor market dates back to 1897 and is filled with stalls selling everything from jewellery and clothes, handmade local wares and art to fresh food.
After browsing the stalls and maybe a bite to eat, you could visit the Fremantle Prison for a tour of the culturally significant convict prison, or walk to Esplanade Park. Here you’ll find a large playground, shaded grassed areas and the distinctive bright red Ferris wheel.
This area is also home to the famous Little Creatures Brewery , an industrial brewery with a quirky and vibrant atmosphere. Try one of their many beers, or book a behind-the-scenes brewery tour.
Other things nearby worth checking out are the WA Shipwrecks Museum, the Round House (a former convict prison) and Bathers Beach House, Australia’s first alfresco beach dining (literally, dining and drinking on the beach with your feet in the sand).
From here, navigate to High St which is a hub of heritage buildings, quirky boutiques (including a record store and map shop) and many drinking and dining options.
If you’re looking for the best sunset spot in Fremantle, Gage Roads Brewery is my pick. Next door to the WA Maritime Museum, Gage Roads Brewery is a massive, industrial-style brewery serving up fresh brewed beers and delicious modern Australian bites.
You can watch the cargo ships and ferries cruise into the port while you watch the sun sink below the Indian Ocean.
- Tonic & Ginger: delicious Southeast Asian share plates in a multi-storied venue that used to be a synagogue
- Emily Taylor: Funky bar and kitchen serving up dumplings and other Asian fusion
- Bread in Common: this popular restaurant is housed in an industrial warehouse space and serves modern Australian cuisine alongside artisanal bread
- Republic of Fremantle Distillery : an urban distillery serving fresh, local produce alongside specialty cocktails
Day 3 – Visit the Rottnest Island Quokkas
Rottnest Island is one of Perth’s best day trips. Catch the ferry from Barrack St in the Perth CBD or catch the train to Fremantle for the trip across to Rottnest Island.
Read all you need to know about planning a day trip to Rottnest Island in my detailed guide here .
5 Day Perth Itinerary
Day 4 – sample the delights of the swan valley .
After a long day exploring Rottnest yesterday, today will be more relaxed but still packed with adventures. Today you’ll be exploring the Swan Valley, a region with world-class wineries and a smorgasbord of dining options located only 30 minutes east of the Perth CBD.
If you have a car, you can choose to do a self-drive tour of the Swan Valley, otherwise there are plenty of options for tours that include transport. I’ve included a few of my favourite options below.
- Ultimate Swan Valley Food and Wine Day Trip: Indulge in some of the best wines and food the Swan Valley has to offer. Include lunch, wine tastings, a brewery stop, cheese board and chocolate tasting on this all-day tour from Perth.
- Half Day Swan Valley Wine Tour: Visit four wineries with a cheese platter at one, as well as a stop at a boutique chocolate factory
- Swan Valley River Cruise and Wine Tasting Trip: Travel to the Swan Valley in style with a scenic river cruise from the Perth CBD. Sample a range of local wine, cheese, beer and chocolate plus enjoy a delicious lunch at a local brewery while enjoying live commentary from your tour guide on board the vessel.
If you’re joining a tour, you don’t need to worry about planning the stops as this will all be organised by your guide. If you’re doing the self-drive option, these are some of my favourite wineries, restaurants and shops.
- Old Youngs Distillery: this award-winning gin distillery has an incredible restaurant featuring native cuisine and unique dishes – book ahead!
- Lancaster Estate: cheese and wine tastings in a casual rustic setting right next to the vineyard
- Mandoon Estate & Homestead Brewery: one of my favourites in the Swan Valley, with a cellar door for wine tastings, a separate brewpub and a fine dining restaurant on a beautiful estate
- Bailey Brewing : This popular brewpub has a fun, large kids playground – it gets very busy on weekends so book ahead if possible!
- Sandalford Wines: One of the prestigious wine estates, and one of the oldest in the Swan Valley
- House of Honey: you’ll find a honey shop with both honey and mead tastings in a beautiful garden setting, plus a casual cafe
- Funk 2.0 Cidery : Casual cidery with a large range of ciders and outside tables
Day 5 – Day Trip to Lancelin Sand Dunes and the Pinnacles Desert
Time to experience another of the best day trips from Perth. Here’s a quick summary of the day, or read my dedicated Perth to Pinnacles Road Trip guide .
You’ll be driving (or joining a tour) to visit the sprawling Lancelin Sand Dunes , about 90 minutes north of Perth near the small seaside town of Lancelin.
Ride the dunes on a sandboard, or hop aboard a quad bike and cruise the dips and crescents of the dunes.
For lunch, head to the Cervantes Lobster Shack for a delectable lobster lunch. You can also join a tour of the Lobster Factory before or after your meal (no bookings required).
Finish the day with a stop at the otherworldly Pinnacles Desert , famous for its towering limestone structures. Explore this national park on foot, or on the loop drive that circles the Pinnacles.
Keep an eye out for kangaroos and emus!
There are two highly-rated tours that I recommend that include stops at both Lancelin Sand Dunes and the Pinnacles:
- Pinnacles Desert Sunset and Star-Gazing Tour: Join this bus tour which first stops at Lancelin Sand Dunes for sandboarding. You’ll then head to the Pinnacles, enjoying a barbeque dinner in the middle of the desert, while sipping on local wine. See the sunset before marvelling at the clear night sky with the help of astro binoculars and a telescope.
- Pinnacles, Koalas & Sandboarding Tour Day Trip: Your first stop will be Caversham Wildlife Park, where you can see koalas and hand-feed kangaroos. Next, travel to Cervantes for lunch and a tour of the lobster factory. The next stop will be the Pinnacles Desert, before driving over the Lancelin Sand Dunes in a custom-built 4WD vehicle. This will be an adventurous day to remember!
7 Day Perth Itinerary
Day 6 – relax at one of perth’s many beaches .
Have a relaxed day exploring some of Perth’s many beaches.
The most iconic beach in Perth is Cottesloe Beach which is a favourite for locals and visitors alike. Stroll along the picturesque coastline on Marine Parade, before taking a dip at the beach in front of the Indiana Tea House (now home to the trendy restaurant Indigo Oscar).
Spend a day enjoying the sun and sand, before watching the sunset while enjoying takeaway fish and chips on the beach.
Another local favourite is Scarborough Beach , which hosts local markets on a Thursday night in summer and has a range of relaxed dining options along the coast.
Another great beach near Perth is Coogee Beach around 40 minutes south of Perth.
This one is a bit trickier to get to (easiest to drive or get an Uber). It’s worth the effort to get to though, as it is home to the Omeo Shipwreck, a unique snorkelling spot. Trigg Beach (north of Perth) is another popular snorkelling beach in Perth.
If the weather is looking gloomy, consider taking another day trip from Perth or spend the day exploring the sights around the CBD that you might not have had time for on Day 1.
Day 7 – Venture to the Perth Hills
The Perth Hills is an underrated region that isn’t often on the itinerary of first-timers to Perth.
However, only a short drive from the CBD, you’ll find brilliant local wineries and restaurants, serene hikes, gushing waterfalls and more.
There are so many things to do in the Perth Hills, and hiring a car is the best way to see them in a day. Otherwise, this Small-Group Bickley Valley Wine Tour is a great option that includes transport (although just note tours usually only run on weekends).
Other things to do in the Perth Hills include:
- Stroll along the Mundaring Weir and go for a bush walk to South Ledge Lookout
- Visit Lesmurdie Falls and hike to the base of the falls (best in winter and spring)
- Enjoy lunch at one of the Perth Hills cideries
- In autumn, visit Raeburn Orchards to see the stunning autumn foliage
- Go for a wine tasting at a boutique winery (Fairbrossen is one of my favourites)
- Watch the sunset from the Zig Zag Scenic Drive
- Immerse yourself in nature at the beautiful Araluen Botanic Park
- Pack a picnic and go for a hike on one of the many trails in John Forrest National Park
Alternative Option: Drive to Margaret River
Consider spending a couple of nights in the Margaret River Region exploring the many wineries, natural attractions and stunning beaches in the area. It is a 3-hour drive from Perth to Margaret River, so it’s worth spending at least two nights.
For more ideas on things to do in the Margaret River Region, check out my guide here .
It is possible to visit on a day trip on an organised tour from Perth , seeing the main sights like Busselton Jetty, an underground cave and a brewery visit. It’s a long day but at least someone else is doing the driving, meaning you can sit back and relax!
Final Thoughts – Complete Itinerary Perth
That wraps up this complete guide to the ultimate Perth itinerary with options for 3, 5 and 7 days Perth itineraries. I hope you are as excited to explore Perth as I am about sharing the wonders of my hometown with you!

Hey! I have found your blog SO helpful in planning my honeymoon to Australia, specifically our time in Perth and Rottnest Island. Thank you so much! I have one question maybe you can help with, do you know if there is anywhere reliable we can store our bags for a few hours while we check out Fremantle? We are planning to spend our last few days in Rottnest and would love to check out Fremantle as a pitstop on our way to the airport. Any suggestions? Thanks!
Hi Bre! So glad to hear my guides have been useful – your honeymoon sounds like it will be incredible! 4D3N Perth Itinerary Under S$500 — A Relaxing Getaway to Australia on a Budget
This Perth itinerary is everything you need for a short relaxing getaway. City and nature blended into a friendly, quaint city.
It doesn’t take long to realise that Perth has a lot to offer. The views are impeccable, nobody’s in a rush, and everyone has a smile on their face. If you’re in need of a reminder that life is fleeting and work isn’t everything, Perth is the place to visit without splashing the credit card limit. Hope you find this Perth itinerary useful!
Pre-trip Essentials
Getting from Perth Airport to the City: Perth Airport is quite a distance away from the city, so you might want to take a comfortable private charter car straight to your accommodation. The cheaper option would be to take Bus 40 from Terminal 3 or 4 all the way to Elizabeth Quay Bus Station.
Visa: You might need to apply for an electronic ETA Visa depending on your passport. Singaporeans need one! Connectivity: A portable WiFi device is the most convenient way to stay connected in Perth. It connects up to five devices and at S$8 a day, it’s cheaper than getting individual SIM cards at the airport for a short trip in a group.
Perth Itinerary Budget Breakdown
Transport: AU$100 (excl. flight to Perth ) Accommodation: AU$87 Food: AU$200 Activities: AU$76 Connectivity: AU$34.50 Total: AU$498.50 (~S$468)
Click here for the full budget breakdown of our Perth Itinerary.
Disclaimer: The cost of living in Australia is more on the steep side, but in most places around Perth, a decent meal should cost AU$20 or less. With some smart rationing, you’ll be able to get around and have a good time for less than AU$500.
Day 1: Perth City
When travelling around Perth, purchase the SmartRider Card at any train station for AU$10 a day, which will allow you to take unlimited bus and train rides around the city. You’ll be able to travel to Fremantle with it too.
King’s Park & Botanic Gardens
Begin your retreat with a slow walk around the Western Australian Botanic Garden located in King’s Park. Take in all of the 400-hectare park’s glory and the 3,000 species of flora, 70 species of birds that reside in it. Described as a “haven for native biological diversity”, we see it too as a sanctuary for the spirit and mind.
Beside the palpable presence of nature is an equally stunning view of the city skyline. There’s something for everybody here, too — with walking tours of varying themes (nature, history, culture) that you can embark on yourself, or with an experienced tour guide for free.
Entrance Fee: Free Opening Hours: 24 hours Address: Fraser Ave, Perth WA 6005, Australia
Perth Institute of Contemporary Arts
What’s a journey of reflection without looking at crafts that ignite the imagination? The Perth Institute of Contemporary Art (PICA) is known for the presentation of new work across all spectrums of art — through exhibitions, performances and learning programmes. You can take a look at the future events they have on offer here .
Entrance Fee: Free Opening Hours: 10AM – 5PM, closed on Mondays Address: 51 James St, Perth WA 6000, Australia
Lunch at Little Creatures
Little Creatures is an open brewery and restaurant that serves up great food and greater beer. They’ve somehow managed to make the interior’s industrial decor feel modern too. Order any variation of their woodfired pizzas (From AU$21), or the beef nachos with guacamole and jalapenos (AU$24) if you’re feeling snacky.
If you’re interested in seeing for yourself just how they make their beers, you can also sign up for a tour around the brewhouse (AU$20).
Opening Hours: 10AM – 11PM (Mon – Fri), 9AM – 12AM (Sat), 9AM – 11PM (Sun) Address: 40 Mews Rd, Fremantle WA 6160, Australia
Blue Boat House
You’ve probably seen it before. Perth’s beautiful isolated Blue Boat House — a cerulean complement to an aesthetic Instagram feed, and the backdrop for approximately 18% of profile pictures on Tinder.
In person, it sticks out as a sore thumb despite its mellow blue hue. Located on the Swan River next to a busy road, it is pretty much, but not completely, like a flower poking through a sidewalk crack. And it really is gorgeous.
* Pro-tip: Closer to dawn, throngs of tourists will be around the area to take pictures. You’ll most likely only have a couple of minutes to strike a good pose and take what you need before you hear muffled bickering behind you.
Entrance Fee: Free Opening Hours: 24 hours Address: Perth WA 6005, Australia
Lazy Susan’s Comedy House
Stand-up comedy is big in Australia. Every week, both seasoned and amateur comedians turn up at the second floor of the Brisbane Hotel to tickle (or attempt to tickle) your funny bones.
We showed up for Shapiro Tuesdays , an event specially for first-time comedians to give it a shot at the trade, and professionals try out some new material to see if they stick. At AU$5, cheaper than a beer, you get a memorable and hilarious evening with your pals. Pretty worthwhile to me.
Check out upcoming events at Lazy Susan’s here .
Cost: From AU$5 Opening Hours: 8PM – 11PM, closed on Mondays, Thursdays and Sundays Address: 292 Beaufort St, Highgate WA 6003, Australia
Accommodation in Perth: Hostel G — ~AU$29 per night. Located in the heart of Perth, this fresh hip establishment is a dream for both foodies and socialites. Most of the magic happens in one, colourful centralised lobby on the second floor — pool tables, arcade games, an open movie theatre, a bar and an in-house kitchen, to name a few amenities.
Day 2: Day Trip to Rottnest Island
Rottnest Island, just off the coast of Fremantle, is the famous home of the “Happiest Animal in the World”. While no one can certainly prove that, they sure look like they are in a constant state of eternal bliss — and everyone loves them for it. But Rotto , as the locals call it, has more than its fair share of wonders that warrant a visit even without the cutie pies.
Getting from Perth to Rottnest: The cheapest way to get there is by train and ferry. Take the Fremantle Line to Fremantle Station from downtown Perth, then walk for 5 minutes over to Fremantle B-shed Terminal to board the Rottnest Express (AU$70).
Getting around Rottnest: People tend to rent bicycles at AU$30 to tour the huge island. If budget’s not your concern, you can pay AU$60 and rent an electric bike instead. You move twice as quick and with three times less effort.
Meet the Adorable Quokkas (Rottnest)
All three creatures in this picture are adorable but the tiny one in the middle gets my vote. Quokkas are scattered all over the island, but there’s usually a large congregation of them closer to the trees by the ferry terminal. Grab a selfie with these friendly fur-balls of joy and you’ve got yourself a new profile picture!
* Pro-tip: Quokkas tend to look happier when they’re munching on some greens. If you spot a quokka mid-meal, don’t touch them, but don’t be afraid to lie on the ground to get a shot either!
Optional: Skydive Over Rottnest Island
I get it — skydiving is the last thing you’d expect on a budget itinerary. And no, I’m not about to reveal that it costs less than a hundred bucks. But you should know that if you’d like to partake in a maddening once-in-a-lifetime experience free falling from 4,262m up in the sky, you can do it at Rottnest as well.
It goes without saying that the view of Rotto from above is spectacular, once you get over the initial fear of jumping from a height no man or woman were meant to jump from.
Cost: From AU$329 Duration: ~2 hours
Have a Picnic by the Beach (Rottnest)
The island is quite the beach paradise. With over 60 secluded beaches and 20 different bays, you can soak up the sun and sand until your feet and tanned skin are wholly content. We recommend grabbing some food from the restaurants before cycling off to have a seaside picnic with your best buds on your very own “private beach”.
Wadjemup & Bathurst Lighthouse (Rottnest)
If you’re sucker for history and random trivia, you’d enjoy a tour around the inner workings of the 170 year-old Wadjemup Lighthouse (AU$9). They are conducted every 30 minutes from 10AM to 2:30PM.
Little Salmon Bay (Rottnest)
Little Salmon Bay is known to be one of the best snorkelling spots on Rottnest. Chances are you’ll come across several types of fish and jellyfish, so bring your GoPro camera with you to take some pictures. But because it’s quite a distance away from the ferry terminal, the lil’ bay isn’t usually too crowded either.
Palace Arcade (Perth)
Once you’re back from frolicking around the soft sand and breezing past cyclists without an electric engine, treat yourself to some ol’ fashioned arcade games and drinks at the Palace Arcade .
You’ll get to immerse yourself in over 150 retro gaming machines for AU$1 – 2 per game, a collection curated by one man over 15 years. On certain days, you’ll get to play unlimited games too, with a minimum spend of AU$20 on their menu items. Check their website for more details.
Opening Hours: 4PM – 12AM (Wed – Thu), 12PM – 2AM (Fri – Sat), 12PM – 10PM (Sun), closed on Mondays and Tuesdays Address: 84 Beaufort Street, Perth, WA 6003

Day 3: Fremantle
Fremantle markets.
The Fremantle Markets are Australia’s equivalent of the pasar malam — except they open shop in the day, and Uncle Ringo’s not lurking in the background.
The sheer volume and variety of stalls can be overwhelming. Cuisines from all around the world seem to have made a pact to congregate in Perth every weekend. Nearly every food store offers something unique that tastes exquisite on the mouth, and the consistent waves of locals who show up are testament to its quality.
Visit with an empty stomach, and whatever stacks of cash you have remaining to pick out the best bits of the market.
Here are several shops we patronised and recommend: Fatboi Brownies , The Honeycake , The Original Fremantle Fudge , Eggspot , Pasta A Round , Roogenic Tea .
Entrance Fee: Free Opening Hours: 9AM – 8PM (Fri), 9AM – 6PM (Sat, Sun, Public Holidays that fall on a Monday), closed from Monday to Thursday Address: South Terrace &, Henderson St, Fremantle WA 6160, Australia
Fremantle Prison
Ex-prison visits are not just great for tales of the supernatural. They offer fascinating insight into what life was like for inmates back in the day, even now, and each prison has their systems that make them unique.
Fremantle Prison , active up until 1991, was known to be one of the most notorious prisons to reside in for both guards and prisoners. They didn’t have proper toilets (only buckets) in their entire 136-year history until the 80s (pretty crappy).
The inmate in this prison cell was given special permission to paint his room, as a form of therapeutic treatment to help him relax.
They’ve got five different tours that last 75 minutes, each showcasing different parts of the prison. One of them is a night tour that requires you hold on to torchlight to really bring out the chills from your spine.
Cost: AU$22 – 75 (depending on tour) Opening Hours: 9AM – 5PM Address: 1 The Terrace, Fremantle WA 6160, Australia
Skyview Wheel Fremantle (Optional)
The Skyview Wheel, also known as the Tourist Wheel, makes for some sick Instagram-worthy photo opportunities. While you’ll be able to get a bird’s eye view of Fremantle on board, the image from the bottom isn’t too bad either (and it’s free). It’s located within Esplanade Park, a place with lots of natural greenery, and a skate park directly opposite the wheel too.
Price: AU$12 per pax Opening Hours: 10AM – 9PM, closes on 10PM on Fridays and Saturdays Address : 34 Mews Rd, Fremantle WA 6160, Australia

Holey Moley Golf Club, Northbridge
I’ve been to many bars in my youthful existence, but the Holey Moley Golf Club is on par (haha) with the best around. Although their food is decent and their drinks are delightful, what makes the franchise special is not what’s on the menu, but what’s on the green.
More than half of the establishment serves up creative, elaborate golfing set-ups, a brilliant post-alcohol activity for you and your friends to have a ball of a time.
With a minimum spend of AU$10 (~S$9), which is essentially the cheapest item on the menu, you’ll get a free 9-hole game on the house. That’s ~S$5 cheaper than what you’d pay in Singapore — plus you get to enjoy a meal or drink too!
Opening Hours: 12PM – 12AM (Mon – Thu), 12PM – 1AM (Fri), 10AM – 1AM (Sat), 10AM – 10PM (Sun) Address: 53 Lake St, Northbridge, Western Australia , 6003
Spoil Yourself with Chicho Gelato
Chicho Gelato’s eclectic and eccentric range of flavoured frozen desert will make your sweet tooth sparkle and shine. Eggnog, Spiced Pumpkin Gingersnap, Burnt Butter Popcorn, Avocado Candied Bacon (???) are just a few of the unique tastes you’ll get to try. A scoop costs AU$5 and three scoops are AU$10.
Opening Hours: 12PM – 10PM (Sun – Wed), 12PM – 10:30PM (Thu), 12PM – 11PM (Fri –Sat), closed on Mondays Address: 180 William St, Northbridge WA 6003, Australia
Day 4: Best of the Rest
There are still plenty of things on the Perth bucket list to check off. Since it’s your last day though, we’ll leave it to you to decide based on the time you have left in the city.
Yanchep National Park
There are a few things you don’t realise until you come to Australia. One of them is the unfortunate amount of roadkill you find on the highways, which are a pretty depressing sight. When we finally saw some kangaroos (alive and well) in Yanchep National Park , we quite literally hopped with glee.
The park is home to a community of kangaroos and koalas you’ll get to observe from a distance. It’s also as serene and quiet as any park you’ll find back home, perfect for a relaxing stroll any time of the day.
Entrance Fee: Free Opening Hours: 24 hours Address: Yanchep Beach Rd &, Indian Ocean Dr, Yanchep WA 6035, Australia
Rally Action Driving
If you’ve ever dreamt of stepping in the shoes of Lewis Hamilton, you may carry on dreaming. However, our friends over at Rally Action can offer you something else pretty close — an Adrenaline Ride . A chance to sit next to a professional rally driver, balls up in your throat, and reflect on the times you’ve bragged about actually being good at the wheel.
These guys are pros, and nothing quite compares with being in the front seat going at 150km/h on a dirt track. You can in fact try your hand at taking a spin with a professional coach next to you too, with additional cost and a full day free. Do note that the location of this activity is some ways from the city, and it’ll be more convenient if you have time to spare for transportation.
Cost: From AU$99 (~S$92) Activity Timings: 9AM, 11:30AM. Weekends only, open mid-March to early December How to get there: 2hrs 30min drive north from Perth. Exact location of race circuit provided upon booking.
Hope you found our Perth itinerary useful. Let us know what else we should include!

Singer lily allen slammed after she confesses to leaving her kids in economy on flights.
Thanks for contacting us. We've received your submission.
Lily Allen has sparked backlash after revealing that she has put herself in first class and her daughter in economy for an upcoming flight to London.
The singer made the confession while speaking to her childhood friend Miquita Oliver on their BBC podcast Miss Me?
Allen told her co-host that when returning to London for her friend’s birthday with her 11-year-old daughter Ethel she had decided to sit apart from her.
“We are flying to London today to come and see you for your birthday — I’m going in first class, she’s going in economy,” she said.
“You know what that is?” Oliver said as Allen joked, “Selfish?”
Oliver continued, “The circle of life. That baby is now coming to London because you live in New York for my 40th birthday, which we are having at the end of the road we grew up on.”
Allen replied, “There’s a trend at the moment on social media of people defiantly saying that they won’t give up their seats for children on airplanes,” to which her friend agreed, saying, “Fair enough. Why would you give your seat to a kid if you paid for it? It’s not like a train.”
However, Allen then went on to argue that airline passengers should be mindful of families who haven’t been sat next to each other.
“Quite often when you’re a big group the airline will separate the seats,” she explained.
“You’ll get to the airport and they’ll tell you your child is sat [away from you] and so when you get on the plane you have to ask people if they don’t mind moving so you can sit next to your children.”
“Obviously it’s inconvenient for everybody involved but I find it fascinating that it’s now become something that gives you clout on social media when you’re like, ‘A mum came up to me and asked me to move and I told them to f–k off.’ Is this what we’ve become? Well done, you’ve made a family sit apart from each other.”
Allen insisted that some families may not have had the chance to book seats in advance and shared her wish for people to be a bit nicer to others.
“Says me who’s putting myself in first class while my child is alone in the back of the plane. I don’t want to sit with my kid,” laughed the singer.
Her remarks have left social media divided, with some hitting out at the star for appearing to contradict herself.
“Alright for some isn’t it,” remarked one, while another said, “Poor flight attendant being left to do your job!”
However, others supported the singer, claiming that her refusal to bring her child into first class will help keep them “grounded”.

Ageless lawyer hoping to become oldest Miss Universe contestant at 60
A 60-year-old Argentinian lawyer is turning heads and is one step closer to making history with hopes of becoming the oldest Miss Universe contestant.

New drinking method proof Gen Z gone mad
She’s an ageless beauty.
Alejandra Rodriquez was crowned Miss Universe Buenos Aires on Wednesday for the right to represent the province in the nationwide competition in May, according to HOLA!
Ms Rodriquez believed she had long aged out of the worldwide beauty pageant, but her thoughts changed when the rules changed.
In its inception in 1952, Miss Universe contestants’ ages were required to fall in the strict range of 18 to 28 years old and be single with no children.
But the pageant ruled last year that women between the ages of 18 and 73 were allowed to compete regardless of any other factor.
The increase in the upper age requirement was announced last September and will be first implemented for the 2024 competition.
R’Bonney Gabriel is currently the oldest contestant to claim the Miss Universe title, winning the competition at 28 years old in 2022.
The newly crowned Miss Buenos Aires became a journalist out of high school before studying law and becoming a legal advisor for a hospital, she told Argentinian television network El Trece .
Ms Rodriquez, whose looks are still turning heads credits her lifestyle for her appearance, saying she keeps to her diet and remains active.
“The basic thing is to have a healthy life, eat well, do physical activity,” she told the outlet.
“Normal care, nothing too extraordinary and a little genetics.”
The 60-year-old says she sticks to her diet, which consists of healthy eating.
“What I try to do is intermittent fasting, I think that helps a lot,” she said. “Then I try to eat organic foods, a lot of fruit, a lot of vegetables, and use good creams.”
Ms Rodriquez says she works out three times a week, mainly walking and some jogging. “I’m not extreme.”
Ms Rodriquez’s win at the Miss Buenos Aires competition came from a pool of 35 contestants of various ages.
“We were 35 participants of all ages, from 18 to 73 years old was the oldest. There was no age category,” Ms Rodriguez said.
The newly crowned Miss Buenos Aires is happy to be competing and is proud to be one of the faces of the modern beauty pageants.
Her eyes are now set on the Miss Argentina pageant, which begins on May 25 in Buenos Aires.
More Coverage
“I am thrilled to be representing this new paradigm in beauty pageants because we are inaugurating a new stage in which women are not only physical beauty but another set of values. I am the first of this generation to start with this,” Ms Rodriguez said, according to HOLA!
The Miss Universe pageant is scheduled for September 28, 2024.

Thanks so much to Jennie and the team at British Travel. With the travel ban for leaving Australia and the flights caps for getting back I didn't think I would be able to get home to Scotland and be with my family when I needed to, but Jennie made this possible. My family and I will be forever grateful for what she managed to do and I can't thank her enough. I don't know how she does it all but really appreciate all her help!
I would highly recommend Jennie and her team to anyone. The team took a huge weight off my mind managing my travel through the incredibly challenging circumstances that are currently in place with Covid. I’m sat here in quarantine, I had no bumps, no cancellations, and got back with a breeze. They also provide a very fair price. The team provided me with up-to-date information regarding my travel, navigated me through the various forms needed, and were on hand for any questions. THANK YOU!
Jennie book my flights back to Perth from Manchester during Covid. I didn't want cancellation and bump issues, so after reading good reviews on her success at returning Australians, I decided to go with British Travel. I was not dissappointed, no issues, flights went to plan.
