Best places to visit in mexico for 2023-2024.
With year-round warm weather and diverse destinations ranging from metropolitan Mexico City to the sands of Tulum, Mexico boasts vacation spots that appeal to all sorts of visitors. To help you determine which locale is best for you, U.S. News compiled this list of the best places to visit in Mexico by factoring in cultural attractions, food options, beaches, water-based activities and nightlife, along with traveler votes and expert opinions. Vote for your favorite vacation spots below to help us determine next year's ranking. (Note: The U.S. Department of State advises against traveling to certain Mexican states due to crime; check the website for updates before booking your trip, and be cautious if you decide to travel.)
Zihuatanejo
Isla mujeres, isla holbox, mexico city, playa del carmen.
Located on Mexico's Pacific coast, Zihuatanejo offers travelers an authentic Mexico experience full of brilliant sunsets and laid-back vibes. In this fishing village, shopaholics can buy local handicrafts (think: ceramics and woodcarvings), and foodies can savor fresh fish tacos and ceviche along the beach. The city's Playa La Ropa serves as the main beach and stands out because of its clean, family-friendly atmosphere. Playa Larga, another excellent beach option, is set slightly outside of town, so it offers a quieter atmosphere and plenty of room to sprawl out. Just off the coast, divers and snorkelers can pick from several dive sites brimming with marine life.
Home to Mexico's most famous waterfront Mayan ruins, Tulum appeals to history buffs and water lovers alike. Positioned along a coastal stretch of the Riviera Maya, about 40 miles south of Playa del Carmen, Tulum offers some of the best hotels in Mexico , ranging from small boutique hotels to wellness retreats to all-inclusive resorts. Regardless of where you stay, you can spend time lounging on some of the world's most beautiful beaches (try traveler-approved Playa Paraíso or Playa Ruinas), exploring ancient ruins (consider booking a daytrip to nearby Chichén Itzá for a larger-scale site) and swimming in secluded cenotes, unique underwater caves located around the Yucatán Peninsula.
This island is probably best known for two things: coral reefs and cruise ships. Travelers love this destination's brilliant blue water and laid-back beaches, plus its abundance of water sports activities. Numerous outfitters and resorts offer kayaks, paddleboards and snorkeling gear. While you could spend every minute in the water or on the beach with a good book, Cozumel is also a quiet place to learn about Mayan culture. Visit the Mayan ruins at San Gervasio archaeological site for a dose of pre-Hispanic history.
Ixtapa's curved coastline is packed with hotels, restaurants and nightlife, giving the Pacific coast city (located just north of Zihuatanejo) a bustling vibe. Playa El Palmar, the main beach, often proves better for sunset strolls and people-watching than swimming or snorkeling due to the strong waves. Still, warm, clear and generally gentle water and coral beds farther offshore make Ixtapa one of the best places for beginner scuba enthusiasts. Anyone interested in the area's history should also explore the Archaeological Museum of the Costa Grande, a small museum that details the various cultures and events that make the region unique.
A great option for a weekend stay or a quick daytrip tour , Isla Mujeres is set off the coast of Cancún and offers beautiful beaches perfect for relaxation and coral reefs ready for exploration. In fact, it's one of the best places to go snorkeling in the world thanks to a unique underwater museum and one of the world's largest coral reefs (home to all sorts of colorful fish). See marine life from another perspective on a glass bottom boat. When you want to catch some rays, Playa Norte is the most popular beach, framed by white sand, turquoise water and swaying palm trees.
Quiet beaches, a relaxed atmosphere and stunning crystal-clear water are some of Isla Holbox's standout attributes. This up-and-coming slice of paradise is perfect for travelers looking to truly get away from it all, thanks to its car-free, off-the-beaten-path location. Isla Holbox is situated off the northern coast of the Yucatán Peninsula and only 26 miles long. Expect quaint boutique hotels, stretches of white sand beaches (Playa Punta Cocos and Punta Mosquito are two top spots), opportunities for snorkeling and sailing, and more than 100 species of birds, including vibrantly colored flamingoes.
About 25 miles north of Puerto Vallarta, Sayulita is a small beach town known for awesome surfing conditions and scenic stretches of sand. If you've never surfed before, sign up for a lesson from a local to learn. Visitors can also go whale watching, snorkeling, scuba diving, horseback riding or zip lining, or hop on a relaxing boat tour. After a day of fun in the sun, head into town to check out the local art galleries and grab a bite to eat at one of the tasty restaurants (Sayulita is a burgeoning foodie destination), which feature everything from cheap eats to fine dining.
Anglers recognize Manzanillo as a world-class deep-sea fishing destination for anyone searching for sailfish and marlin, but many types of travelers will enjoy a trip to this Pacific coast destination, located 170 miles south of Puerto Vallarta. The city's two bays mean there is no shortage of beaches for visitors to swim and sunbathe on: Top spots include Playa la Audiencia and Playa Salagua. Water sports like snorkeling and kayaking are also popular activities to enjoy here. If you have time, visit the small town of Barra de Navidad (about 30 miles northwest) for charming hotels, restaurants and stores along the beach.
Dreamy white sand , nightclubs, all-inclusive resorts and inexpensive flights from the U.S. make Cancún a go-to spot for spring breakers and vacationers seeking an easy beach getaway. But this city on the Yucatán Peninsula also sits close to lush jungles and tranquil cenotes, making it an excellent option for nature lovers. Not to mention, travelers will find diverse and cheap street food served from various carts in the downtown area. Visiting in fall or winter will ensure you see this city (one of the most-visited spots in Mexico) in its most tranquil light, but December through April is when the weather is closest to perfect.
Ornate baroque and neoclassical buildings, busy plazas and colorful homes are everywhere you turn in this UNESCO World Heritage-listed city. Guanajuato, situated about 50 miles west of San Miguel de Allende, is known for its subterranean streets and tunnels, which you can explore on a walking tour or at your own leisure. After admiring the city's cobblestone roadways and charming colonial architecture, grab a souvenir or bite to eat at the bustling Mercado Hidalgo. If you enjoy art, arrive in October when the popular Festival Internacional Cervantino takes place.
As the capital of Yucatán, Mérida's rich culture is visible around every turn. White stone mansions line Paseo de Montejo (the city's main street), while vibrant Sunday markets provide a taste of old-world Mexico. Those looking for Mayan ruins are also in luck; many ancient archaeological sites are in close proximity, including the famed Chichén Itzá just 75 miles east. Meanwhile, museum and art enthusiasts praise El Gran Museo del Mundo Maya de Mérida, as well as the city's art galleries and local murals. When it comes to lodging, travelers will have their pick of quaint boutique hotels.
The most populous city in Mexico is steeped in history and culture. Mexico City boasts delectable cuisine, ancient Aztec sites and world-class hotels – all at fairly low costs – but if you feel like splurging, you'll find an array of high-end shops along the tree-lined Avenida Presidente Masaryk in the Polanco neighborhood. Must-see attractions in Mexico City include the Zócalo, the Palace of Fine Arts, Chapultepec Castle and the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe. And if you want to eat your way through the city, consider signing up for a food tour .
For a vacation packed with authentic character, head to Puebla. This city, which sits about 80 miles southeast of Mexico City, is filled with colonial architecture and numerous churches, but its main draws are its stunning Talavera pottery, its historical forts and museums, and its sweet and spicy cuisine. Visitors must try mole poblano (made with numerous ingredients, including chiles, meat, chocolate, cinnamon and garlic) and chiles en nogada (chiles stuffed with beef and served with a walnut sauce and fruit like peaches, apples and pomegranate seeds). When the sun sets, venture to Callejón de los Sapos to listen to live music.
Playa del Carmen boasts an exciting food scene, with eateries dishing out everything from delectable tacos and tostadas to sushi and expertly cooked seafood, plus an even hipper bar culture. What's more, this destination in the Riviera Maya beckons to vacationers with its soft white sand blanketing its beaches and its stunning shoreline views. Visitors can also bike to a nearby cenote for a refreshing dip or hit the links at one of the numerous surrounding golf courses. All-inclusive resorts , vacation rentals and boutique properties abound in Playa del Carmen, too, giving travelers plenty of options to find the best fit for their preferences and budgets.
This secluded vacation spot is known for its luxurious lodging options (from vacation rentals to high-end hotels like the St. Regis and the Four Seasons), golf courses and charming beaches, such as El Anclote and Playa de Punta Mita. The small resort village of Punta Mita sits on a peninsula in Banderas Bay and most appeals to travelers seeking a relaxing atmosphere. Those interested in scuba diving, snorkeling, fishing and surfing will be able to enjoy those activities here as well. If you're visiting between December and March, book a whale watching tour for a chance to see humpback or orca whales.

Mexico Yucatán Experience
Extremely well organised and planned tour, we packed so much in to the 10 days and had the best time. The value you get for your money is brilliant, with a lot of activities included in the up front price and options to do extra when you are there. Lau the tour guide was amazing, extremely knowledgeable about the area and give great tips on sight seeing, bars, restaurants etc at every stop on the tour. Also as a girl travelling, I have never felt safer as part of her tour group. Great trip if you want to immerse yourself in the culture while also having time to relax on the beach, highly recommend. Only downside was not all the accommodation had AC and it was extremely hot, especially in Bacalar. Other than that amazing!

Wonders of the Maya
We met a wonderful group of people which always makes it easier. Our group was smaller (12) which gave us flexibility. Sights are amazing and well worth seeing. Both our guide and driver were very passionate and brought a wealth of personal and cultural information to our group.. Pickups from the airport and drop offs all ran smoothly. Not alot of room to fit luggage in the large van so pack with restraint is thoughtful, we left half our luggage at the hotel we were returning to, but not everyone can do that... Accommodation was great, on occasions had a pool, which is nice. Food excellent. Highly recommend this tour.

Great. Exceeded our expectations Selected experiences were all highlights. Hotels fine - some minor niggles but no worries. Big rave for Alejandro - our guide. Just made the trip so alive and interesting.

This tour was a great introduction to Mexico - different cities, food, traditions and history.

Mexico Real Food Adventure
Mexico was amazing. Mexico City, Puebla and Oaxaca were such great places to visit and eat. Huatulco was a bit touristy and cruise ship town for my liking. The food, markets, arts and sightseeing were totally worth it. I would recommend arriving early and staying on after to visit thermal springs or tour bays and waterfalls.
Best of Chiapas and Yucatan
Generally very interesting, quite well organized, hotels decent (by general Latin American standards), and food good. Guides a mixed bag - some barely speak, others are a wealth of info. All kept us safe though, which is most important in this area. One guide unfortunately made an offhand racist comment towards the end of his tour, which unfortunately colored our whole perception of his commentary. I spoke with him about this and he did not apologize, but agreed to rethink his opinion. I've traveled to over 60 countries and unfortunately this is just something you encounter every now and then. In general I recommend the tour.

Mayan Adventure
i am amazed at the care shown about where we were and how we were doing. I wish we could have had more time to wander around the ruins especially at chichen itza. If iIhad to do it again I would have skipped Cancun completely and spent two days at the ruins. Miguel was just awesome and he is so smart he needs to learn more about the ruins and the history like the guide we had at chichen itza. HOWEVER, his knowledge about the Mayan people was incredible. I had recent surgery on my foOt and wore a brace,Miguel was so kind and helpful I got to see everything , even climbed the stairs at Pelenque. WOULD RECOMMEND THE TOUR HIGHLY.

Mexico Unplugged
The Mystical Mayan Trail: A Trip Through Mexico's Vibrant Culture and Natural Beauty
Colonial Treasures of Mexico
My wife and I along with three friends signed up the tour to Mexico from Indus Travel. The total 12-day Maya Culture trip really gave us opportunities to learn Mexico indigenous cultures thoroughly. We have seen a lot of ruins and pyramids, each of them has different representations and can tell the history of what was happening atthat time. We also had chances to visit the indigenous families toexperence the real Mexican people's life inthe rural area. The views of volcanoes, villages and canyons are also unforgettable. This is a small group with total 7 tourists, our driver/tour guide is a very experienced guide, Jose explained the history in sequence of events in and out. Most of all with 2500km driving he made us fell safe with his skills. All in all, this trip worths a 5+ star. I was so surprised that Indus Travel assigned a tour coordinator dedicated to our group, Kathlene helped a lot to make the arrangements for the whole trip, her prompt responses made us worry free.

Our guide Enrique and driver Riccardo we’re both very accomodating and provided great support making our trip stress free. At every stop Enrique checked accomodation, explained breakfast, meals and checked the room. His knowledge of each site and the historical context of significant events was exceptional. We would highly recommend this trip with this guide and driver

What people love about Mexico Tours
Awesome trip, great way to see so much of Mexico in a short space of time. Top moments were the beach at Holbox, swimming in the 7 colours lagoon, experiencing the cenotes, all the guacamole, delicious breakfast recommendations, seeing Xichen Itsa and biking in Tulum. Our guide was Eve and she was THE BEST. We have done a bunch of other trips and she was by far the most personable, creative, fun, lovely person with a lot of experience and wonderful ability to share her knowledge with us. Highly recommend this trip to anyone who wants to party and catch a lot of culture all in one trip. I loved that the group was only 10 people, gave us a chance to meet everyone and there wasn’t a divide in the group nor too many people.
An excellent tour to appreciate and learn about the Mayan civilisation. Very happy to have done this. Miguel is a very knowledgeable and enthusiastic tour guide with a good sense of humour. We felt very safe in the hands of our driver, Edgar. All of the hotels were decent and centrally located. We had a minor issue with the airport transfer to the hotel as we didn’t see anyone holding out a sign with our name. The assistance contact number provided by Destination Services was useless, no one answered when we called. Luckily we had the number of the guide, he helped us find the right guy in the busy Cancun airport!

The gregarious locals are just as likely to pull you up for a dance at one of Mexico City ’s hip-shaking salsa clubs as they are to show you the way to one of the country’s many ancient ruins , all with a casual ‘hola’ and an inviting smile. While our tours get you up close with locals, they also show you the best sights from on and off the gringo trail. Best time to visit mexico.
Mexico is generally most pleasant between September and June in the cool, dry season. July and August can be very hot and humid, but perfect for swimming, snorkeling, and lazing on the beach. These are, however, the busiest months for travel as this is the time of the North American school holidays. Highland areas such as Chiapas and Oaxaca tend to be cooler year-round, with cold nights.

Culture and customs
Mexico lays claim to one of the richest and most historic cultures in the world. Characterized by strong regional identity, locals are affiliated directly to the region they hail from with each region having its own unique customs, cuisine and even language dialect. Despite this, national identity is still strong with all Mexicans sharing common bonds over their love of sport, dance, food and religion. With most of the country belonging to the Roman Catholic religion, religious festivals and celebrations are plentiful in Mexico. Parades, street fairs and parties held in honor of local saints are commonplace, and offer travelers the chance to witness the customs and rituals of this vibrant culture.
Eating and drinking
One of Mexico's biggest draws is its food and drink. From Oaxaca's indigenous staples to the sizzling street food of Mexico City, there's almost too much choice for the hungry traveler. By the end of your Mexico tour, you'll know your tacos from your tamales, your enchiladas from your elote and your tequila from your mezcal.
Eat your way through this vibrant country on our 9 day Mexico Real Food Adventure.

Geography and environment
Mexico shares land borders with the United States , Belize and Guatemala , and has an extensive coastline that runs along the Gulf of Mexico, the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea.
Featuring a wide variety of natural environments, Mexico is home to tracts of tropical rainforests, vast areas of low-lying plains and deserts, volcanic mountains and temperate beaches and lagoons.
Mexico's capital and major cities are typically built up, busy and lively – with a vast network of public transport, highways and roads. Rural areas, on the other hand, are distinctly less developed, with small-scale housing, unsealed roads and rustic farms.
History and government
Early history.
People have been living in Mexico for more than 13,000 years. Mesoamericans occupied the area early on, with archaeological evidence pointing towards Mesoamericans leading a hunter-gatherer existence. Maize farming is thought to have become commonplace by 1500 BC, which led to the farming of other commodities as well. A variety of cultures contributed to the early history of Mexico, with the Olmec, Toltec, Maya, Teotihuacan and Aztecs all bringing unique cultural, religious and artistic styles to the region, with the Mayan and Aztec Empires having the greatest (and most enduring) impact on the region.
Mayan society can be traced back to 300 BC, while the Aztecs enjoyed prosperity from 1325 to around 1521 AD. Many ancient ruins and constructions from these periods are still standing all throughout Mexico and can be visited and viewed today. By the 16th century, the Spanish had arrived in Mexico and what followed was a period of colonialism that lasted nearly 300 years.
During this time, Mexico was seen as a part of ‘New Spain’ along with Cuba and Puerto Rico. This was not a particularly good time for Mexicans who (under colonial law) were generally not allowed to travel outside of Mexico and were denied access to education. Mexico achieved independence from the Spaniards after the War of Independence (1810-1821) but peace was short-lived as two decades later the Mexican-American War brought more confrontation and armed conflict to parts of Mexico.
Recent history
Mexico’s Revolution of 1910 - 1921 was a period of instability, marked by political turmoil and bloodshed. More recently, Mexico has enjoyed an economic resurgence after decades of economic hardship, which lasted from the 1970s to the mid-1990s. The earthquake of 1985 didn’t help matters, with wide-scale damage and loss of life compounding the economic problems and political uncertainty of Mexico. Currently, Mexico is benefiting from a period of improved economic conditions, although the gap between the wages earned by Mexicans and their northern neighbors continues to widen. Mexico is now operating in a free market economy and the growth of tourism, agriculture and industry has ensured an improved economy for the country, although financial inequality still exists within.
Memorable moments of Mexico
1. ramble among the ruins.
A visit to the famed ruins of Chichen Itza reveals history, ancient architecture, and wildlife in equal measure. Walk through the complex and hear jungle animal calls as colorful birds fly among the canopy. This is a stirring experience to treasure.
2. Bittersweet bites
The cult of chocolate is well and truly alive in Oaxaca! The flavors here are simply phenomenal and unlike mass-produced chocolate in the Western world. Spiced with chili, cinnamon and cloves, you won’t soon forget the taste of Oaxacan chocolate.
3. Sunshine and snorkeling
Mexico’s Caribbean coastline showcases expanses of clear blue water, white sand beaches, vibrant reefs and plenty of sunshine. Snorkeling over colorful fish and sun-lit coral is simply unforgettable.
4. Mountain majesty
The cooler climate and fresh mountain air of San Cristobal de las Casas provides some respite from the city heat. Chilling out in this relaxed and visually stunning area is a magical Mexican moment.

Top places to visit in Mexico
This coastal town is well-known for its incredible cliff-top Mayan temple ruins with expansive ocean views. But outside of architectural wonders, Tulum also has quite a few natural wonders. Spend some time exploring Tulum's numerous cenotes and caves for unforgettable snorkeling and diving.
Explore Tulum on our 8 day Yucatan Peninsula Adventure or on our 8 day Premium Mexico Yucatan Highlights tour.
Numerous significant architectural sites, baroque churches and impressive cultural displays may have landed Oaxaca the badge of Unesco World Heritage Site, but in recent years, the city has gained notoriety as a culinary destination. Make sure to try regional specialties like tlayudas, mole and mezcal.
Get a taste of Oaxaca on our 9 day Mexico Real Food Adventure.
3. San Cristobal
Set in a valley surrounded by pine forests, San Cristóbal de las Casas has a bright yellow cathedral, pastel houses and buildings draped in deep pink bougainvillea, making it one of Mexico's most colorful cities. Stop by the local markets to browse locally-made handicrafts with colors that rival those of the city itself.
Explore this colorful city on our 15 day Best of Mexico tour.
Travelers will be delighted with the range of good quality shopping available in Mexico. As usual, the markets offer some of the most cost-effective and fun ways to shop, although Mexico’s cities also showcase some excellent boutiques and galleries for more costly purchases.
It's a good idea to check with your local customs officials to ensure that you are able to bring certain items back into your home country. The United States and Canada generally have strict customs laws.
Things to buy in Mexico
1. Tiles, ceramics and earthenware
Mexico has a longstanding tradition of creating good-quality pottery. Hit the artisan markets for colorful pots, vases and jugs. Don’t forget to pack carefully.
2. Bright textiles
Woven textiles can be found almost everywhere in Mexico. Hand-woven rugs, blankets, scarves, and ponchos are great reminders of your time in Mexico.
The silver in Mexico is among the world's best. Rings, necklaces and bracelets featuring bold Aztec designs are popular choices.
4. Lucha Libre masks
This Mexican wrestling phenomenon is growing in popularity worldwide, so grab a colorful wrestling mask - it’s a great souvenir for kids (and big kids) at home.
Festivals and events in Mexico
Mexico is the land of the fiesta and the locals will find any reason to party. Whether they're celebrating independence, the saints or the dead, you can expect vibrant colors, lively music and a whole lot of dancing. One to keep an eye out for is the Autumn Equinox, when crowds gather at Chichen Itza to witness the sunlight and shadows play tricks on this ancient relic. During the autumn (and spring) equinox, the sun moves across Chichen Itza, illuminating parts of the temple to reveal the moving body of a snake. Not seen on any other days, this natural spectacle draws thousands of pilgrims.

Mexico travel faqs, do i need a covid-19 vaccine to join an intrepid trip.
Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards
From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travelers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises).
However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travelers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.
Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.
When is the best time to visit Mexico?
Mexico is a country of varied landscapes and altitudes and the best time to visit depends on a variety of factors, the first of which is where you actually want to go.
Is it safe to visit Mexico?
Mexico has long been a popular tourist destination and most travelers do not run into any trouble. There are, however, areas that experience high levels of violent crime as a result of lawlessness and drug trafficking. That said, you can rest assured that Intrepid would not take you anywhere unless we were convinced it was safe.
Do I need a visa to travel to Mexico?
All tourists traveling to Mexico need a tourist permit, but not all need a visa. Citizens of the US, EU, Canada, the UK, Australia and New Zealand are among those who do not need a visa and can obtain a tourist permit on arrival.
Is tipping customary in Mexico?
Tipping is expected in most parts of Mexico. The service workers typically earn a low wage and rely on tips to earn a decent living. We recommend leaving 10–15 percent at restaurants (if the service charge is not already included), 5–10 percent of your room cost for housekeepers, and a few dollars for porters, bartenders and guides.
What is the internet access like in Mexico?
Internet access is good in Mexico with wi-fi available in most accommodations, bigger restaurants, airports and in some public spaces. It’s also easy and affordable to buy a local SIM card for the duration of your Mexico tour.
Can I use my cell phone in Mexico?
If you wish to use your cell phone while in Mexico be sure to activate global roaming before leaving your home country. You should also check with your provider regarding any charges you may incur when overseas.
If you wish to purchase a local SIM card in Mexico, your phone must first be unlocked. For more information on local SIM cards, please read about internet access in Mexico .
What are the toilets like in Mexico?
It's likely that you will encounter different types of toilets while traveling in Mexico. Western-style flushable toilets are commonly found in high-end resorts, hotels and restaurants, while squat toilets are common in rural areas and homes. Be prepared by carrying your own supply of toilet paper and soap, as these aren't always provided.
What will it cost for a...?
Mexico’s unit of currency is the peso:
- Cheap local meal = MXN 150.00
- Domestic beer at a restaurant = MXN 50
- One-way metro ticket in Mexico City = MXN 6.00
- Mid-range meal = MXN 400.00
Can I drink the water in Mexico?
We do not recommend drinking the water in Mexico.
For environmental reasons, try to avoid buying bottled water and fill a reusable water bottle or canteen with filtered water instead. Ask your leader where filtered water can be found; some hotels we stay in may have drinking water available, often boiled to use for tea or coffee.
It’s also advisable to avoid ice in drinks and to peel fruit and vegetables before eating.
Are credit cards widely accepted in Mexico?
Credit cards are generally accepted in Mexico at large stores and most mid- high-range hotels. Some cafes, bars and restaurants may accept card too, but the places with real character – and the best local food – tend to be cash only.
What is ATM access like in Mexico?
ATMs are available across towns and cities in Mexico. Travelers should not encounter trouble finding an ATM but be wary of international transaction fees. For your own safety, try to use ATMs in daylight hours.
What is the weather like in Mexico?
Mexico is renowned for its sunshine and sandy beaches, but the weather can vary depending on the region you’re traveling to and the time of year.
What public holidays are celebrated in Mexico?
- 1 Jan: New Year’s Day
- 5 Feb: Constitution Day
- 21 Mar: Day off for Benito Juarez’s Birthday Memorial (variable)
- April: Maundy Thursday/Good Friday (variable)
- 1 May: Labor Day
- 16 Sep: Independence Day
- Nov: Revolution Day Memorial (held 3rd Monday of the month)
- 12 Dec: Day of the Virgin of Guadalupe
- 25 Dec: Christmas Day
Please note: Mexico public holidays may vary.
Is Mexico safe for LGBTQIA+ travellers?
Mexico is becoming increasingly more accepting of same-sex relationships and has laws in place to protect those that identify differently, but it remains a country of strong Catholicism that has historically been hostile towards the local LGBTQIA+ community.
For more detailed and up-to-date advice, we recommend visiting Equaldex or ILGA before you travel.
If you are travelling solo on an Intrepid group tour, you will share accommodation with a passenger of the same gender as per your passport information. If you don’t identify with the gender assigned on your passport, please let us know at time of booking and we’ll arrange the rooming configuration accordingly. A single supplement is available on some tours for travellers who do not wish to share a room.
Is Mexico accessible for travelers with disabilities?
Intrepid is committed to making travel widely accessible, regardless of ability or disability. That’s why we do our best to help as many people see the world as possible, regardless of any physical or mental limitations they might have. We’re always happy to talk to travelers with disabilities and see if we can help guide them towards the most suitable itinerary for their needs and, where possible, make reasonable adjustments to our itineraries.
Tourist destinations in Mexico including Mexico City and the resort areas on the Yucatan Peninsula are seeing an increasing number of hotels, restaurants and tourist sights fitted out to accommodate travelers with limitations. That said, it can still be difficult for those with mobility issues and visual and hearing issues, particularly on public transport. We recommend using taxis to move around locally and flying between cities if possible unless, of course, you are on an Intrepid Mexico tour.
If you do live with a visual, hearing or other impairment, let your booking agent or group leader know early on so they’re aware and suitable arrangements can be made. As a general rule, knowing some common words in the local language, carrying a written itinerary with you and taking to the streets in a group, rather than solo, can help make your travel experience the best it can be.
What should I wear in Mexico?
What you pack for your Mexico tour will depend on where you are traveling to. Mexico City, for example, will be much cooler than the coastal areas of Playa del Carmen or Tulum, thanks to its high altitude. In the winter, it can drop down towards freezing at night while reaching 73°F during the day, so it’s important to be prepared for both ends of the spectrum.
What's the accommodation like in Mexico?
Traveling with Intrepid is a little bit different. We endeavor to provide travelers with an authentic experience to remember, so we try to keep accommodation as unique and traditional as possible.
When traveling with us in Mexico you may find yourself staying in a basic hotel.
Intrepid prefers smaller character-filled hotels and guesthouses than hotel chains. When on vacation in Mexico, enjoy staying in small hotels owned and run by friendly locals.
Does my trip to Mexico support The Intrepid Foundation?
Yes, all Intrepid trips support the Intrepid Foundation. In fact, we make a donation on behalf of every traveler. Trips to Mexico directly support our foundation partner, Gastromotiva Mexico.
Gastromotiva Mexico
Gastromotiva Mexico is tackling food scarcity and homelessness while promoting a sustainable food movement. Donations help them provide nutritious, balanced meals to community shelters for vulnerable people such as women affected by domestic violence and refugees.
Intrepid will double the impact by dollar-matching all post-trip donations made to The Intrepid Foundation.

Whether you’re a seasoned traveler or you’re about to embark on your first trip, traveling can be as intimidating as it is exciting. That's the beauty of a small group tour. Plus, you'll have ready-made friends to share the journey with. All you have to do is turn up with a healthy sense of adventure and we’ll take care of the rest.

More About Cancun
Cancun is a major resort destination on the Yucatan Peninsula overlooking the turquoise waters of the Caribbean Sea. One visit and you'll understand why this stretch of white-sand beach transformed into the thriving resort destination you'll experience today. The hotel zone stretches along the coastline between the Nichupte Lagoon and the aquamarine waters of the Caribbean.
While most people connect Cancun to Spring Break, there is much more to this seaside resort community than a rowdy reputation. This region of Mexico is known for its extensive Mayan culture and artifacts. The Museo Maya de Cancun, located in the hotel zone, hosts more than 400 artifacts and an outdoor exhibit including original ruins among walking paths.
To the north is the community of Playa Mujeres, a sleepy resort area that has grown in recent years. Exquisite resorts are staking a claim along this area offering an alternative to the bustling hotel zone without sacrificing the beach experience.
To the south, stretching from Puerto Morelos to Tulum is the resort area known as Riviera Maya. For information on this area, please explore our Riviera Maya page.

- To make it easier to replace your passport if it’s lost or stolen, in addition to your passport, take a photocopy of your passport information page (keeping it separate from your actual passport).
- Carry only a limited amount of cash, just enough for gratuities and incidental purchases. Major credit cards are widely accepted and can be replaced if lost or stolen.
- Always lock your hotel room door (including patio and balcony door on any level of the building) and use the peephole before opening the door.
- Store your valuables (such as cash, credit cards and airline tickets) in the hotel’s in-room safe or front desk safety deposit box.
- If you must carry valuables on your person, do so in a pouch or money belt concealed under your clothing. Purses and backpacks can be easy targets for thieves.

Sargassum/Seaweed Advisory
Sargassum is a free-floating seaweed that is especially prolific in the Caribbean Sea and Gulf of Mexico. While beneficial to ocean life, these large free-floating seaweed mats often wash up on beaches. The amount of seaweed on the beaches fluctuates based on the time of year and ocean currents. While resorts do their best to maintain the beaches for their guests, you may experience some inconvenience during your stay.

Mexico Vacations
A Mexico vacation can be one of a kind. A trip to Cancun and its neighboring communities of Riviera Maya and Playa del Carmen cater to the all-inclusive crowd, where unlimited drinks flow and sprawling resorts dot the coastline. For a more authentic experience, head west to Puerto Vallarta, known for its cobblestone streets and vibrant art scene. Beyond Cancun and Puerto Vallarta, Cozumel is a snorkel and scuba haven, thanks to the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, one of the biggest in the world. Don’t miss the chance to have an undersea encounter with an endangered species like Loggerhead Sea Turtles and West Indian Manatees. While Cancun, Puerto Vallarta, Cabo and Cozumel are as stellar as advertised, travelers shouldn’t sleep on Mexico City. Travel + Leisure magazine tabbed Mexico City as one of the best cities in the world, not just Mexico. It’s not shocking when you consider the city’s pleasant juxtaposition of Euro-style plazas with Aztec temples.

Mexico City
Puerto Vallarta
Combine mexico with..., about mexico, mexico faq's.
There are so many things Mexico is known for. Tourists come to Mexico for varied experiences, from beach getaways to cities and towns chock-full of history . Those who come to Mexico to enjoy the beaches love to partake in water sports such as diving, snorkeling, surfing, yachting , and parasailing , and a growing number of visitors also enjoy outdoor recreational eco-tours , many of which combine pyramids and temples built by the Mayans . Spanish colonial influence is evident in many of Mexico`s cities and towns, and colonial buildings are just a stone`s throw by the temples and sacred grounds built by both the Mayans and the Aztecs . No matter where you go in Mexico, it is a great place for shopping at every price point, from Liverpool luxury department store to small, locally-owned souvenir shops . Visitors to Mexico also take the time to sample many Mexican dishes (the more the better!), complete with shots of delicious tequila and mezcal .
Tourists typically visit Mexico a region at a time and explore from there, so the best places to recommend depend on which part of the country you want to visit. If you are arriving in Mexico City , spend a few days exploring this beautiful capital city and then head south to Oaxaca or northwest to Guanajuato and charming San Miguel de Allende . If you want to visit the Riviera Maya , fly into colonial gem Mérida or the nightlife mecca of Cancún and explore further to such sights as Chichén Itza, Playa del Carmen, Isla Mujeres, Cozumel Island , and Tulum . Those who head west from Mexico City should take time to visit Guadalajara , Puerto Vallarta , and Mazatlán . Visitors to Baja California love to see such tourist spots as Los Cabos , Tijuana , and Ensenada . If you`re combining Tikal in Guatemala with your stay in Mexico, stop by the quaint town of San Cristobal de las Casas in Chiapas state.
We recommend seeing Mexico during the dry season , which corresponds to the period of time between December and April . Pacific and Atlantic hurricane seasons occur between June and November, which is the rainy season for much of the country. Prices will be lower but humidity and rain chances will be at their highest. The dry season is also the high season, so if you are looking for a better deal, you might want to consider summer and autumn.
We recommend approximately 7-10 days based on what you want to see and do. We offer flexible vacation packages so you can select your number of nights in each city, desired hotel and activities. We suggest a minimum of 3 nights in Mexico City, along the Pacific Coast, and on the Riviera Maya.
We recommend seeing Mexico by air and by private transfer . While it is possible to rent a car and drive in many parts of Mexico, it may come as a culture shock for Americans, as driving over the speed limit is the norm and this may frazzle people whether they are on highways or in big cities. Mexico`s road system is not developed to the same extent seen in the United States, making cross-country road trips more difficult in terms of not just amenities along motorways but also in terms of safety (many stretches of highway are not illuminated at night). Let trusted drivers pick you up from your hotel or the airport in late-model, air-conditioned luxury instead, taking the guesswork out of getting from Point A to Point B. Note: You will notice police checkpoints set up along motorways leading up to major towns and cities; don`t be alarmed, the police are checking for trafficking of illicit drugs, and most times travelers who present themselves as if they are tourists are immediately waved through the checkpoints without any further inquiry.
The currency of Mexico is the Mexican peso (written in shorthand as $, MXN$ or MXP). U.S. dollars are not legal tender and are not accepted in most shops, but many tourist-geared shops and resorts accept payment in U.S. dollars, usually on a more disadvantageous exchange rate than the current rate at banks. We recommend paying and tipping in Mexican pesos as much as possible in order to make your funds on vacation stretch for a longer period of time. Be prepared to arrive with the correct currency on hand or make sure to retrieve pesos on arrival, which you can do at a number of ATMs in the airport and across the country. (The ATMs with the best exchange rates are typically ones operated by Banco Santander (red) and Citigroup/Banamex (gray).) There are currency exchange desks at many locations throughout the country as well, some offering competitive exchange rates in relation to ATMs.
Spanish is the official language of Mexico. English speakers will be found in most places there are a lot of tourists, such Mexico City and other major cities, historic sites, resorts, and major shopping districts popular with tourists. English is also popular with younger Mexicans who routinely consume media from the U.S. and U.K., many times with English audio and Spanish subtitles. It may be more difficult to find people who speak English in smaller towns or in shops away from tourist zones, but most Mexicans are accommodating and will work with tourists who are positive and pleasant in their interactions with them. Be prepared to learn basic Spanish phrases like hello/goodbye, please/thank you, how much is it?, where is the bathroom, and the numbers from 1-10 and 50, 100, and 1,000. To say `Do you speak English?`, say ` ¿Habla inglés? `

Why Mexico?
When we made it over to Latin America, we knew Mexico had huge potential and a big future as a TruTravels destination. Mexico is HOT. And by hot we don’t just mean spicy enchiladas that’ll make your eyes water and tropical beaches filled with scantily-clad vacation-goers - we mean trendy. The Yucatan peninsula is the Bali of the Caribbean - the perfect mix of diverse nightlife, history, and absolutely unreal beaches all within a few hours of each other. Exploring crystal-clear cenotes (insane natural underground pools), visiting the Mayan ruins on the coast, partying the night away in Tulum, and island hopping in the Caribbean are just a few of the highlights on this epic 11-day adventure. It’s been tried, tested and given the seal of approval from the legendary TruCrew. Also partly due to unlimited access to tacos and tequila...Vamonos!

The Maya Train Will Get You to All of Yucatán’s Best Spots. But Not Yet.
In December, the train began running on its first route through Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula. On a five-day journey a few months later, the author encountered enthusiasm, and scheduling hiccups.
By Elisabeth Malkin
Elisabeth Malkin has been visiting the Yucatán Peninsula for three decades.
I stepped off the platform at the gleaming new Maxcanú train station, eager to see the magnificent Maya archaeological site of Uxmal. All I needed was a taxi to take me there, a trip of about 30 miles away.
There are no taxis, said the stationmaster, as we stood on the polished limestone floors of the high-ceilinged station, which was cool and breezy despite the brilliant late-morning sun outside. And I was the third person in two weeks to get off at Maxcanú expecting to reach Uxmal, he said.
I was midway through a five-day trip to explore the brand-new Maya Train and several of its destinations in the Yucatán Peninsula of Mexico . Designed to run 965 miles (1,554 kilometers) around a loop of 34 stations when completed, the train will whisk passengers in cool comfort through colonial cities, archaeological sites, splashy resorts and tropical forests.
Now I was stunned. Wrangling a taxi has never been a problem in Mexico. But the drivers gathered in the main square of Maxcanú offered only beat-up vans that hopscotch through small towns, where I might or might not find a taxi to Uxmal. The next van was leaving in 45 minutes.
Yucatán’s layers of history have long held me spellbound. During earlier car trips, I have clambered up deserted Maya temples and palaces, stepped into the cool naves of massive 16th-century churches and visited restored haciendas, testaments of the ostentation — and hardship — of the peninsula’s 19th-century plantation economy. Traveling by train, I thought, would allow me to steep myself in more of that history.
But as I found in Maxcanú, a train won’t necessarily get you to where you want to go.
During my February trip, I traveled on the only route then available, an east-west leg that opened in December and runs from Cancún to Mérida, and then south through the port city of Campeche to the Maya site of Palenque (a short route between Cancún and Playa del Carmen opened last month, with three trains a day). I encountered scheduling confusion, unfinished stations and a dearth of trains — just two operating daily each way between Cancún and Campeche, and only one to Palenque. Overnight sleepers and special dining trains seem years away.
President Andrés Manuel López Obrador considers the Maya Train his showcase development project, and wants to inaugurate the rest of the train before he leaves office on October 1. Based on my experience, that goal seems elusive.
A $29-billion route through the jungle
I started my journey in Cancún, where in the pre-dawn gloom the station hovered like a glowing spaceship. An attendant scanned the ticket I had bought online and a half-dozen more pointed me toward my tourist-class car, which was about a quarter full. I planned to go to Campeche, about 300 miles away, stopping once each day. At 120 kilometers (about 75 miles) an hour, the train covers the route in about six hours, the same as a car. (When construction is complete, the train’s speed should increase to 160 kilometers an hour.)
The car’s wide windows looked out at a wall of low jungle. The blue-green seats were comfortable and there was ample space between the rows. I bought a very good cappuccino at the snack bar, but declined the plastic-wrapped sandwiches. The rest of the merchandise was fruit cups, milk boxes and junk food.
The train will ultimately cost much more than the $29 billion budgeted so far, and it’s not the first time ambitious planners have alighted on the region. Cancún was once a tiny fishing village, selected half a century ago as a tourist hub. Last year 10 million international tourists flew into its airport, more than the airports of Mexico City, Los Cabos and Puerto Vallarta combined.
But uncontrolled growth has stressed the Caribbean coast’s fragile environment. The Maya Train, scientists warn , will push those problems south, threatening the area’s water supply, its unique system of underground limestone caves and its vast nature reserves.
Mr. López Obrador has charged ahead, handing the train over to the military , and arguing that it will spread Cancún’s wealth and attract new visitors. Mexico received more than 42 million overseas tourists last year and they spent almost $31 billion .
Local governments see an opportunity. “The train will allow people to disperse throughout the peninsula,” said Michelle Fridman, the tourism secretary for Yucatán state, which promotes dozens of attractions far beyond highlights like Mérida and Chichén Itzá .
Now that the train is operating, transport companies will begin to connect stations with lesser-known sites nearby, she said.
It’s fair to ask whether the train is the most effective way to develop the peninsula’s tourism. Tour companies already run trips to many sites from major cities, which are well served by buses. Driving a rental car through most of the area is considered safe , according to U.S. State Department travel guidance .
Route of Mexico’s Maya Train
Canceled trip.
It took two hours (and one time-zone change) to reach Valladolid, a colonial city of handsome streets and ancient churches, where I bought the rest of my tickets at the station. A tourist-class ticket from Cancún to Valladolid costs 472 pesos (around $28) for foreigners and 355 pesos (around $21) for Mexicans. First class, with wider seats, costs 755.50 pesos and 566.50 pesos, and discounts are available for older travelers and residents of the five states along the train’s route. (A first-class bus from downtown Cancún to Valladolid costs between 222 and 344 pesos, depending on the time of day, and takes half an hour longer.)
It was impossible to run the new Maya Train tracks into dense city centers and the Valladolid station, like the rest, was outside the urban core. A waiting bus took disembarking passengers downtown, a 15-minute ride for 35 pesos.
That day I toured Ek Balam , the site of a ninth-century Maya kingdom that is dominated by a 100-foot palace distinguished by a facade of carvings depicting winged warriors, stylized animal features and geometric patterns bordered by giant fangs. Admission to the site includes entry to the X-Canché cenote, one of thousands of limestone sinkholes that were sacred to the Maya.
Later that afternoon, I was wandering through the Museum of Ethnic Clothing, a private collection of traditional dress, embroidery and hats, when a WhatsApp message from the ticket office blinked on my phone. My train scheduled for the following day was canceled.
I decided to deal with the problem in the morning and enjoy the city. As I wandered past the antique shops and boutique hotels of the elegant Calzada de los Frailes, it was clear that Valladolid’s tourism, and the infrastructure to handle it, was well established. The Maya Train is simply an alternative way to reach a city that tourists discovered years ago.
‘We’re on the Tren Maya!’
In the morning, I found that my train had not been canceled, but the station for which I had a ticket, Tixkokob, was closed. I got off instead one stop earlier at Izamal, known for its ocher streets and the giant Franciscan convent of San Antonio de Padua, built atop the ruins of a pyramid.
During the 90-minute ride, I heard widespread enthusiasm among fellow travelers who expressed a willingness to give the train time to work out the kinks. “We’re an experiment,” said Oliva Escobedo Ochoa, 64, who was vacationing from her home in central Mexico.
Leticia Iliassich, 57, who is Mexican, was traveling with her Croatian husband along with relatives from Mexico and Croatia. They had initially been scheduled on an earlier train to Mérida that had been canceled. “We knew that it was a new project,” she said. “We don’t mind.”
The group had already sent a video to friends declaring, “We’re on the Tren Maya!”
At the Izamal station I hitched a 15-minute ride into the town center with a man who had asked me to take his photo alongside the train and his father. From there I negotiated a taxi to Hacienda San Lorenzo Aké, a working hacienda that still turns the fiber from an agave plant called henequén into coarse rope. Global demand for henequén, known as Yucatán’s “green gold,” brought fantastic wealth to the region in the mid-19th century, speckling the peninsula with more than 1,000 haciendas. ( Many are now sumptuous hotels.)
Where geometry, nature and the divine merge
It was during my third day that I found myself stuck in Maxcanú, after a 90-minute train ride from Izamal. The stationmaster, an army captain, offered me a ride to Uxmal, just as he had to the stranded tourists before me.
Eying Uxmal’s 4 p.m. final ticket sale, I accepted.
My situation made it clear just how distant the Maya Train’s promises are for tourists seeking to explore more of Yucatán. In time, that will change, said Ms. Fridman, the tourism secretary. “The idea is to have more hotels along the train line,” she said. “That will happen little by little.”
But Uxmal , among the most stunning of the Maya sites, made up for the inconvenience. Uxmal’s grand buildings are faced with intricate decorative masks as well as friezes in which geometry, nature and the divine merge. New plaques at each structure offer detailed information in English and Spanish, part of the government’s investment in improving displays at Maya sites for the train project.
Most tourists either take day trips by car or bus to Uxmal from Mérida or stay at one of three nearby hotels. As I finished dinner at my hotel, the dining room began to fill up: 47 Polish tourists had arrived.
Panama hats and a cramped van
My plan for the day was to go by taxi to Bécal, a town where Panama hats are woven in limestone caves to keep the fibers soft, and then pick up the afternoon train in nearby Calkiní for the port city of Campeche.
But I spent so much time watching the hat-making demonstration and then fitting my new hat and buying gifts that we set off with little time to reach the station. To my chagrin, I missed the train, the last one of the day.
On Calkiní’s central square, I found a van that was leaving for Campeche. Cost: 65 pesos. Time: about 1 hour and 20 minutes, similar to what I would have spent on the train. Of course, I was trapped in a cramped seat and had to listen to the driver’s choice of sentimental ballads, but I was dropped off in downtown Campeche, close to my hotel.
The next day, I toured the Museum of Maya Archaeology , an expertly curated collection that included haunting jade funeral masks, glyphs and delicate ceramic figures.
José Madrigal, 45, an engineer from Fremont, Calif., was trying to make Maya pottery interesting for his twin sons. The boys had just turned 5 and their birthday present had been a ride on the Maya Train. “They love trains,” Mr. Madrigal said. Then the family moved on, keeping up a brisk clip through the museum. They had another train to catch.
Should you take the train?
Yes, if you are traveling between larger stations. The train also offers a way to get to Palenque, which is harder to reach and has roads with security concerns. Travelers can stow bicycles on board.
To see train times, check the destinations on the website . You cannot buy tickets online more than a week in advance. But when you finally board, the ride is smooth — and the coffee is excellent.

MEXICO CITY IN A NUTSHELL
Here’s a quick overview of all the useful info you need to plan an awesome trip!
When To Go : During the dry season, which runs from December to April.
Where To Stay : I love staying in the hip/trendy Roma Norte neighborhood! We like Hotel Marbella ($), ULIV Apartments – Roma Norte ($$), Casa Goliana ($$$), and Brick Hotel Mexico City ($$$).
Nearest Airport : Mexico City International Airport (MEX)
How to Get Around :
- Uber : Uber is probably the safest way to get around the city. However, you’ll want to keep your doors locked and your windows rolled up to prevent thieves on motorcycles from rolling by and snatching things from you! (I’ve witnessed this with my own eyes in CDMX — it happened to our Uber driver!)
- Taxi : You should only use authorized taxis or taxi apps, such as Easy Taxi or Cabify.
- Metro – The Mexico City Metro is an affordable way to get around the city. It is one of the largest metro systems in the world and has 12 lines that serve different parts of the city. The metro has women/children-only train cars for safety. Having said that, riding the Metro is not the safest way to travel throughout the city. There have been horror stories about people getting pickpocketed or robbed at knifepoint. Ride with caution!
Must-Do’s : Go to the Frida Kahlo Museum (at her actual house!), explore the colorful district of Coyoacán (one of Mexico City’s oldest districts), take a free walking tour of Centro Historico , take a day trip to Teotihuacan — the City of the Gods!
Before You Go : Make sure you can get into the country.
- Check that you have a valid passport and that it won’t expire within 6 months of your trip!
- Mexico requires travelers to fill out an Official Entry Immigration Form (or Tourist Card) before passing through customs at the airport. The Tourist Card is NO LONGER provided by commercial airlines. You’ll want to fill out the entry immigration form online , which is free to do.
‘Hello’ and ‘Thank You’ in Spanish : “Hello” = “Hola” and “Thank you” = “Gracias”.
Currency : the Mexican peso (MXN) – click for current conversion rates
1. Teotihuacán
Distance from Mexico City: 30 miles (48 kilometers), 1 hour by car.
A day trip to Teotihuacan from Mexico City is a great way to explore one of Mexico’s most iconic archaeological sites. Plus, it’s one of the easiest to do given that it’s such an iconic landmark in Mexico!
It was once a thriving metropolis that was home to over 100,000 people and is known for its impressive architectural and cultural achievements.
Teotihuacan is located about 30 miles (50 km) northeast of Mexico City, so it is best to start your day trip early to avoid crowds and traffic. You can take a bus, a taxi, or opt for one of the many guided tours to get there.
Once you arrive at Teotihuacan, take some time to explore the site and marvel at the ancient pyramids and temples. The site is home to several iconic landmarks, including the Pyramid of the Sun, the Pyramid of the Moon, and the Temple of the Feathered Serpent.

2. Santiago De Querétaro, Querétaro
Distance from Mexico City: 135 miles (217 kilometers), 2 hours 25 minutes by car.
Santiago de Querétaro, or simply Querétaro, is a beautiful colonial city in central Mexico. Founded in 1531, Querétaro has a rich history evident in its well-preserved architecture and museums. The city is also home to delicious food, lively markets, and friendly locals.
Santiago de Querétaro is one of the few historic silver mining towns northwest of Mexico City. The city is also a UNESCO World Heritage site with vibrant colonial architecture, lovely cobblestone alleys, and hundreds of tree-lined plazas. It’s absolutely eye candy!
The historic center, which includes the spectacular 18 th -century Baroque home Casa de Ecala and the town’s iconic 16th-century aqueduct , still provides water today. It stands tall as one of the highlights of the town, and a great way to experience it is with a trolley bus tour of the center – the kids will adore the sights, too!
A trip along the cheese and wine trail is one of the most popular weekend activities for couples or friends in Querétaro. These excursions feature cheese-making demonstrations with a lot of opportunities for tasting, of course!
Furthermore, the unique setting allows an excellent opportunity for the whole family to experience the intricacies of farm life.
Where To Stay: Gran Hotel de Querétaro
3. San Miguel De Allende, Mexico
Distance from Mexico City: 168 miles (270 kilometers), 3 hours, 16 minutes by car.
San Miguel de Allende is a lovely historical town in Guanajuato state with a somewhat cosmopolitan vibe. Its mild climate, authentic Mexican cultural feel, and stunning esthetics make it irresistible!
The place has a habit of charming many individuals from the United States, inviting them in with its alluring charms. Consequently, many tourists have migrated to San Miguel and are now calling it home, especially in the last decade.
Start your exploration in Centro Historico (historic downtown) at the Parroquia de San Miguel Arcangel . The numerous photos of San Miguel sometimes capture the beauty of a distinctive pink-colored Gothic church from the 17 th century – one of Mexico’s most beautiful churches.
If you want to acquire Mexican folk art souvenirs, go to the open-air San Miguel de Allende Mercado de Artesanias – the Artisan Market. It’s one of the best places to find souvenirs or exciting things to take home as presents.
After a few hours of seeing the city, you may satisfy your hunger at Chocolates y Churros San Agustin , one of the finest restaurants in San Miguel de Allende. Alternatively, you may snack on a bench in El Jardin , the garden located in the main town square.
If you feel like venturing to a location outside of town, visit the El Charco del Ingenio Botanical Garden and the two most incredible hot springs in San Miguel de Allende, Spa La Gruta and Escondido Place .
Where To Stay:
- Casa No Name – a magical little luxury hotel
- Hotel Casa Blanca 7 – amazing location, even more amazing breakfast!
4. Cholula, Mexico
Distance from Mexico City : 80 miles (128 kilometers), 1 hour 51 minutes by car.
Cholula, Mexico is a beautiful town located in Central Mexico in the metropolitan area of Puebla, Mexico. The town is best known for its stunning scenery, friendly people, and delicious food.
The town is situated atop a mountain, which provides stunning views of the surrounding area. The buildings in Cholula are also very beautiful, and many of them date back hundreds of years.
When visiting Cholula, be sure to check out its archaeology park, which is host to Mexico’s largest pyramid—Pyramide Tepanapa. This is one of the largest structures in all of Mesoamerica. Climb to the top for a breathtaking view of the city below.
Then, explore one of the many local markets for some delicious Mexican cuisine. Don’t forget to try a traditional Pueblan dish like mole poblano!
If you’ve had enough of Cholula, there’s still a lot to see in the nearby towns/villages of Puebla, Tonantzintla, and Acatepec. Consider booking a few nights at Quinta Luna for your home base as you explore the region more.
Where To Stay: Quinta Luna
5. Tepotzotlán, Mexico
Distance from Mexico City : 25 miles (40 kilometers), 1 hour by car.
Situated in a highland mountain valley and flanked by dramatic and lush mountain cliffs, Tepoztlán is one of Mexico’s unique colonial towns and hidden gems.
Tepoztlán is just 75 km (46 miles) south of Mexico City and 17 km (11 miles) northeast of the popular colonial town of Cuernavaca, making it an easy day trip from CDMX, though I’d definitely recommend staying overnight for one or two nights to fully appreciate all this town offers.
When it comes to Tepotzotlán, Mexico, there is no shortage of reasons to visit this beautiful place. For starters, the town is home to some of the most stunning colonial architecture in all of Mexico.
In addition, the town is also home to a number of important historical sites, including the former home of Emperor Maximilian I.
But that’s not all that Tepotzotlán has to offer. The town is also home to a number of great restaurants and cafes, as well as a vibrant nightlife scene.
Tepotzotlán is home to some of the most vibrant markets in Mexico. Stroll through the stalls and take in the sights and sounds of this lively place. Be sure to bargain for souvenirs! Don’t miss the traditional town market which opens daily just off the main square, as well as the lively Weekend Artisan and Foods Market which sets up every weekend in town.
From there, head to archaeological sites like Piramide del Tepozteco . Explore the ruins of ancient civilizations and learn about the history of this region. Built atop a mountain cliff that overlooks the town and the entire valley below, the temple was built in honor of Tepoztecatl, the Aztec god of harvest, fertility, and Pulque.
This is going to be a bit physical, as there is a trail that leads to the top of the mountain ridge where the temple zone begins. If you can handle the climb, you will be rewarded with stunning views of the town and valley in addition to the temple itself.
If you’re looking for a charming Mexican town to visit that’s off the beaten path, Tepotzotlán should be at the top of your list!
Where To Stay: Mansion Tepotzotlan
6. Cuetzalan, Puebla
Distance from Mexico City: 185 miles (299 kilometers), 4 hours 27 minutes by car.
The breathtaking drive from Mexico City to Cuetzalan is one of the region’s most thrilling journeys and is ideal for a road trip!
Beyond the Zaragoza exit, you’ll find twisting pathways and hairpin twists that add to the sightseeing experience. Once you traverse the interesting pathways and take in the sights, you will be in the state of Puebla.
Cuetzalan, an indigenous town in Puebla, is a bit farther out than your usual weekend getaway location, but tourists interested in Mexico’s indigenous history and culture will find it well worth the extra travel time!
The town is well-known for showcasing its culinary achievements and customs, such as the Feria del Café y del Huipil , which takes place in early October and celebrates both coffee and indigenous blouses.
On the other hand, Cuetzalan stands out not just as a remote town on a map but also for its world-renowned voladores who perform in front of the Parroquia de San Francisco de Asís . They are known as flying dancers because they whirl around a tall pole while being strapped from their ankles. In fact, UNESCO officially designated their dance as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
If you enjoy trying the local cuisine within a city, you can buy numerous specialties at roadside stands, including fruit wines and smoked meats. In particular, xoco atoll is a fermented rice drink with a unique taste, while dulce de tejocote is a type of yellow hawthorn fruit in anise syrup.
Some of the most remarkable monuments that rise over Cuetzalan are the Gothic spire of the Parroquia de San Francisco , the French Gothic Santuario de Guadalupe , and the plaza’s freestanding clock tower. The Santuario de Guadalupe, in particular, has some extremely interesting ornamental rows of los jarritos – clay vases modeled on the Lourdes sanctuary.
7. Tula, Hidalgo
Distance from Mexico City : 53 miles (86km), 1 hour 22 minutes by car.
If you’re looking for a quick day trip as opposed to an overnight stay, Tula is a quick and easy trip from Mexico City. Tula, also called Tollan, was the ancient capital of the Toltecs in Mexico.
Located about an hour and a half drive from Mexico City in the state of Hidalgo, this area is famous for its archeological site, which is home to the ruins of an ancient city. The site was once a major center of trade and commerce but today, it’s a popular tourist destination.
If you’re interested in learning more about the history of Mexico, then Tula is a great place to visit.
The magnificent ancient complex includes a large pyramid, a palace complex, and a number of other buildings. The city was abandoned in the early 13th century, but it has been extensively excavated and studied since then.
The complex, believed to have been inspired by the Maya civilization in Yucatán, was initially occupied during the early 7th century and later decades by the militaristic Toltecs. They included aspects of the Mayas’ artistic talents.
They gave eagles and jaguars significant symbolic meaning, and findings also indicate human sacrifice activities to satisfy the gods.
A series of finely carved columns and monumental sculptures known as the Atlantes now stand erect on the platform of the temple pyramid, used to support the temple’s roof.
A small on-site museum displays ceramics, jewelry, metalwork and stone figures from ancient civilizations throughout Mexico. Your admission includes entry to the museum as well.
8. San Sebastian Bernal, Querétaro
Distance from Mexico City: 147 miles (236 kilometers), 2 hours 40 minutes by car.
San Sebastian Bernal is a small town located in the Mexican state of Querétaro. If you’re looking for a more off-the-beaten-path weekend getaway, a visit to Bernal is going to fit that bill.
Bernal is a beautiful location to unwind and forget about the rest of the world. The town’s central square is small yet attractive, with good eateries and excellent architecture. The area surrounding Bernal is known for its beautiful scenery and its many hiking trails.
When you’re not out hitting the trails, spend a few hours meandering through town enjoying the traditional Mexican restaurants and shops.
Bernal’s most notable feature, though, is the massive stone monolith that stands right in front of the village. The Pea de Bernal , at 1,421 feet (433 meters), is the world’s third-largest monolith, trailing only Spain’s Gibraltar Rock and Brazil’s Sugarloaf Mountain.
And of course, when there’s a monolith, there are going to be climbers who’ll want to climb it. If that sounds like you, you can go on an excursion to climb the rock. Otherwise, there are many other local activities to enjoy.
Where To Stay: Hotel Quinta Mirador Zacualli
9. Cuernavaca, Morelos
Distance from Mexico City: 54 miles (87 kilometers), 1 hour 20 minutes by car.
Cuernavaca, Morelos also goes by the name of the City of Eternal Spring, thanks to its year-round balmy weather.
If you do make this city a priority, you should definitely make your way to the Palacio de Cortes , an ancient palace dating back to 1526. This two-story stone palace was built over the ruins of a Tlahuica Aztec tribute collection center that the Spanish destroyed during the conquest. Hernán Cortés turned it into his personal residence to demonstrate his rule over the local people.
The previous mansion now houses the Museo Regional Cuauhnáhuac , which has a mural by Diego Rivera on the upstairs balcony.
Then, head to the Templo de Santa Prisca y San Sebastian , an 18th-century church that’s simply stunning. Of course, you can’t visit Cuernavaca without taking a stroll through the Jardin Borda , one of the most beautiful gardens in all of Mexico.
The Museo Robert Brady , which displays the private art collection of American artist and collector Robert Brady, is well worth a visit. Brady resided in Cuernavaca for 24 years but traveled extensively, collecting paintings, sculptures, and fabrics from all around the world. All of them are on exhibit at his former home, among works by well-known Mexican painters.
Xochicalco , which translates to ‘in the home of flowers’ in Nahuatl, is a lovely side trip about 29 miles (40 kilometers) southwest of Cuernavaca. The ruins surrounding the city are well-preserved pyramids, ball courts, an observatory, and the Site Museum.
Trust us, there’s plenty to keep you busy in Cuernavaca!
Where To Stay:
- Hotel Boutique La Casa Azul
- Las Casas B&B Boutique Hotel, Spa & Restaurant
10. Mineral De Chico
Distance from Mexico City: 77 miles (127 kilometers), 2 hours by car.
Mineral De Chico is a small and charming old mining town located in the Mexican state of Hidalgo. The town is home to a number of mines, which produce a variety of minerals including gold, silver, and copper.
Although it is not a particularly popular tourist destination, Mineral De Chico is definitely worth visiting. The town has a number of interesting historical and cultural sites, and the surrounding countryside is absolutely beautiful.
This village is among the newest pueblos mágicos, boasting a lot of allure for those looking to enjoy a weekend away for fresh air. For instance, you can visit Parque Nacional El Chico , a reserve established in 1898.
The views are lovely, the air is crisp, and the mountains offer some of nature’s most spectacular views; plus, they are great if you’re an avid hiker who enjoys making your way up rock formations to beautiful waterfalls.
Many exciting backstreets lead from the main street, revealing the beauty of the surrounding valleys, such as Corona del Rosal . Another great spot is Capilla del Calvario , a maze of walkways that include a rustic 19th-century chapel on Calvario, uphill from the church.
Where To Stay: Hotel Bello Amanecer
11. Grutas De Cacahuamilpa National Park
Distance from Mexico City : 100 miles (160 kilometers), 2 hours, 19 minutes by car.
Grutas De Cacahuamilpa National Park is a must-visit if you’re interested in natural wonders that lie underground.
The Grutas de Cacahuamilpa Caverns are a globally-known phenomenon, taking the title as one of the world’s most extensive cave systems, together with a lesser network known as the Grutas of Carlos Pacheco, which are the main attractions in this magnificent park.
You can expect to see some of the most spectacular underground landscapes anywhere, including long tunnels carved out by underground rivers and a variety of fascinating dripstone formations extending through 16 chambers and reaching heights of 252 feet (77 meters) and widths of 262 feet (80 meters).
Since their discovery in 1835, numerous tunnels deeper than 10 miles (16 kilometers) have been made to explore the caves’ depths. As a result, various guided tours are available, including rock climbing and rappelling opportunities.
Visitors to the park can explore the caves, hike through the jungle, or take a dip in one of the many rivers and waterfalls.
- Hotel Santa Paula
- William Hotel de Diseño
12. Valle De Bravo
Distance from Mexico City: 86 miles (139 kilometers), 2 hours, 10 minutes by car.
Valle de Bravo is another quaint colonial town about two hours from Mexico City. Proclaimed a Pueblo Magico in 2005, there is indeed a lot of magic here!
The town is known for its cobblestone roads, colorful market, amazing hiking trails, and outdoor activities, as well as its beautiful lake, which is popular for swimming, fishing, and boating.
The surrounding mountains are perfect for hiking and there are many trails to explore. Valle de Bravo is also home to a number of waterfalls, which are popular tourist destinations as well.
For an easy 5.4-mile hike, opt for the Ruta El Plato hike in the Reserva Estatal Monte Alto. For an epic waterfall hike, check out the 4-mile Cascada Secreta de Avandaro hike .
In addition to its natural beauty, Valle de Bravo has a rich history dating back to the Aztec period.
Originally a Matlatzinca settlement, followed by Aztecs, Mexico’s Federal Commission on Electricity transformed it into an electricity hub, which generated electricity and provided a part of the water system that supplies Mexico City by the 20th century.
Although the Valle de Bravo lake is artificial, it displays a genuine, natural beauty that is hard to ignore. As such, Valle de Bravo is popular among many weekend travelers coming from Mexico City, particularly those who desire colorful country cabins, golf courses, hotels, and life on the lake.
The lake is often packed with people enjoying the water and having fun kayaking, water skiing, sailboating, speedboating, and going on catamaran tours.
Within the town, visitors should start at Calle 5 de Mayo , the heart of the town. From there, do not miss the St. Mary’s Chapel , which is noted for its medieval architecture and Spanish style.
The archaeological museum, which has 300 objects from the 3,000 prehistoric sites located solely in the state of Mexico, is also a must-see.
- Mesón De Leyendas Breakfast & Downtown – affordable chic option great for couples and families
- Rodavento Boutique Hotel & Spa – perfect for a romantic little getaway in the middle of the forest!
13. Malinalco, Mexico
Distance from Mexico City: 62 miles (101 kilometers), 2 hours by car.
Less than two hours from southern Mexico City, the spiritual town of Malinalco is a great destination for tourists looking to escape the hustle and bustle of the heavily-populated capital.
If you’re itching for a bit of history and that “authentic Mexico” atmosphere, this is a great spot to visit.
The pre-Hispanic town of Malinalco is best known for its Aztec archaeological ruins, which are remarkably well-preserved and offer beautiful views over the valley.
Some residents believe the remains, which were once the location of horrific rites, now have healing energies. In fact, it’s not unusual to find individuals meditating or experimenting with hallucinogenic mushrooms in the region!
The village also has an incredible 16 th century monastery called La Parroquia del Divino Salvador , lovely cobblestone lanes, and modest art galleries for souvenirs or browsing.
The charming village, surrounded by magnificent mountains and forests, is ideal for leisure, evoking a profound sensation that nothing has changed for hundreds of years.
After strolling through town, it’s time to sightsee. Undoubtedly, the main attraction in town is the Cuauhtinchan Archeological Ruins , which are very well preserved and definitely worth a visit. For more history, head to Museo de Malinalco offers fascinating insights into the town’s history and culture.
Where To Stay: Hotel Amate del Rio or Quinta Ascensión Hotel (Adults Only)
14. Grutas Tolantongo
Distance from Mexico City : 125 miles (200 kilometers), 3 hours 45 minutes by car.
I’m thrilled to spill the beans on a place that’ll leave you utterly mesmerized—Grutas Tolantongo, a hidden paradise in the state of Hidalgo just a stone’s throw away from Mexico City.
Here’s what you can expect in this otherworldly oasis — a series of hot springs (turquoise blue water!) cascading down the side of a steep canyon, creating natural pools that overlook the breathtaking landscape. If the sound of that doesn’t make your jaw drop, I invite you to refer back to the photo!
Oh yeah, and the waters? They’re warm! Even the waterfalls! Spending a day here is like being welcomed into a spa day hosted by Mother Earth herself.
You can choose to soak in the hot springs pools or the much larger hot springs river, explore the Tolantongo caves, zipline, and even go hiking. Needless to say, this is a great excursion from Mexico City for all my adventure travelers!
If you’ve got a car, it makes sense to linger a bit longer and plan out your own weekend adventure.
However, if you’re limited on time, you can book an early-morning Tolantongo day trip from Mexico City to see the caves and hot springs. I recommend sticking to the “early morning” tours in order to beat the crowds — sadly, this place has gotten more Instagram famous as of late.
When you opt for a guided tour, all the logistics of what to see/how to get there will be taken care of for you.
Interested in pairing the Grutas Tolantongo with another destination from this list?
I’d recommend Santiago de Querétaro as it’s just a few hours to the west of Tolantongo. There’s even an overnight tour from Santiago de Querétaro: Grutas de Tolantongo Overnight Tour
We hope this post on the best weekend trips from Mexico City has inspired you to visit somewhere new. If you had a chance to visit any of these towns and villages, let us know how you liked it!

Start the multi-day tour with some wine-tasting at the Valle de Guadalupe vineyards before venturing south to laid-back beach town and fish taco mecca Ensenada . Further south await the pristine islands of Loreto with some of the most biologically-diverse waters on earth.
From there, the road leads to under-the-radar La Paz before it splits west to surf haven Todos Santos and southeast to Cabo Pulmo , Baja's top dive site . On your final stop, celebrate the long journey in the festive sister resorts of Los Cabos .
Planning tip: Consider a road trip in February or March when you can spot blue whales off the coast – the largest animal on the planet.
2. Cruise the Yucatán Peninsula
Best road trip for cenotes and Maya ruins Cancún–Puerto Morelos; 1100km/680 miles
This loop route showcases the most fascinating sights on the Yucatán Peninsula , from jungle ruins and cenotes (limestone sinkholes) to old-world colonial cities and white-sand beaches hugging an aquamarine coastline. As you roll west from Cancún, stop in Valladolid for a dip in an enticing cenote (the Maya believed these natural pools to be gateways to the underworld).
Nearby, don't miss the impressive Maya ruins of Chichén Itzá , but get there early to beat the crowds. Foodies will be licking their chops in Mérida , Yucatán's colonial capital that wows visitors with its extraordinary regional cuisine and vibrant cultural scene.
Next, head southeast to enjoy a leisurely cruise through rolling hills dotted with Maya ruins on the seldom-visited Ruta Puuc. East of Maya country, along the Mexican Caribbean, you'll encounter the impossibly blue waters of Laguna Bacalar, Tulum 's dramatically situated clifftop ruins and primo reef diving in Cozumel and Puerto Morelos.
3. Head for the Oaxaca Coast
Best route for foodies Mexico City–Lagunas de Chacahua; 850km/530 miles
The road to the Oaxaca coast serves up a feast for the senses as you visit Mexico's top foodie destinations, marvel at mountaintop Zapotec ruins and linger on sublime beaches. After some excitement in Mexico City , drive south and stop for lunch in culinary capital Puebla , known for its exquisite moles. About four hours away lies cultural colossus Oaxaca City , yet another foodie paradise and a great base to visit the ancient Monte Albán ruins.
As you continue south, take a break to sample mezcal in Miahuatlán and then perhaps a stopover in San Jose del Pacífico, a misty mountain town renowned for its magic mushrooms. Yep, those magic mushrooms. From there, the route snakes down a windy mountain road to a spectacular coast where you can enjoy carefree beach-bumming in San Agustinillo , big-wave surfing in Puerto Escondido and the unspoiled charms of Parque Nacional Lagunas de Chacahua .
4. Follow the Central Pacific Coast
Best road trip for seafood and water sports Mazatlán–Puerto Vallarta; 440km/275 miles
Kick things off in true norteño (northern) fashion in Mazatlán , where an exciting cultural renaissance is flourishing in its revamped Old Mazatlán quarter. As you move south in the Central Pacific Coast , take a detour to the tiny island of Mexcaltitlán, a shrimping village believed to be the ancestral homeland of the Aztecs. Next, look for the turnoff to Chacala, a delightful palm-fringed cove where thatched-roof restaurants prepare delectable pescado zarandeado (northern-style grilled fish).
About an hour down the coast, you'll reach the neighboring beach towns of San Francisco (aka San Pancho) and Sayulita , family-friendly places with fun-filled outdoor activities such as surfing, kayaking and turtle releases. En route to Puerto Vallarta , drop by the scenic peninsula of Punta de Mita and delight in scrumptious seafood at oceanside restaurant Tuna Blanca .
Planning tip: Once in Vallarta, you won't want to miss the stretch of secluded beaches lining the jungle-backed southern coastline.
5. Explore around Mexico City
Best road trip near the capital Mexico City–Parque Nacional Cumbres del Ajusco; 300km/185 miles
This short but sweet tour packs quite a punch as it circles around the edges of Mexico City's southern border states. Start things off with some serious wow factor on a hike in Itza-Popo Zoquiapan National Park, home to two of Mexico's most impressive volcanoes, the active Popocatépetl and the dormant Iztaccíhuatl (aka El Popo and Izta).
Next, follow the highway southwest for an overnight stay in Tepoztlán , an important Náhuatl center where you can climb up to a clifftop Aztec temple. After that, swing by Cuernavaca and check out Spanish conquistador Hernán Cortés' old digs at the imposing Palace of Cortés .
Planning tip: Make your final stop at Parque Nacional Cumbres del Ajusco and scale Mexico City's highest peak (Pico del Águila), or simply chill out over a hot champurrado (a comforting corn-based drink) and fresh-made quesadillas at a roadside eatery nestled in the park's fragrant pine forest.
Tips for driving in Mexico
If possible, stick to driving on the toll (cuota) highways. Avoid driving at night to reduce the risk of accidents. If stopped by traffic police, remain calm and stay in your vehicle, you'll often be let off with a warning. Be wary of unmarked speed bumps and ubiquitous potholes. For emergency roadside service, call 078.

Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard Kiss Under the Stars During Romantic Mexico Trip: ‘Core Memories’
The ‘You Again’ alum shared an inside look at her vacation that she took with her husband of 11 years and their two daughters, Lincoln and Delta, on Instagram

Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard ’s Mexico getaway was one for the books!
The Frozen star, 43, offered a glimpse of the romantic moment from their vacation in a series of photos shared to Instagram on April 18. While the pair did enjoy some special moments alone, they also spent quality time with their two daughters — Lincoln , 11, and Delta , 9.
In the first snap, the married couple of 11 years appear to be head over heels for each other as they share a passionate kiss under the stars. Shepard, 49, has his hand placed on the back of Bell’s head as the horizon glows behind them in the sweet shot.

Bell stuck to the celestial theme and shared another photo of Shepard basking in the moonlight as more stars peeked out behind him.
In another slide, one of the pair's daughters is seen looking out at the serene pink and blue sky while the full moon shines bright over the ocean.
“Core memories for everyone xoxo 🇲🇽,” Bell captioned the post.
The mom of two also shared an inside look at some of the excursions the family enjoyed together.
One photo shows Lincoln and Delta climbing over rocks to get to a nearby river. Mountains and palm trees stand tall against the stunning backdrop.
In the same setting, the Forgetting Sarah Marshall actress is pictured soaking up the sun in a white bathing suit, white sunglasses and a woven straw hat that rests on her back.
As for Shepard, he had a dad moment when he used his phone’s flashlight to read the menu at dinner.
In the comments, fans point out how “relatable” the photo of Shepard is in the eighth slide.
“The flashlight is so real 😂,” one person wrote, followed by another user adding, “I see Dax and I use the same trick when reading menus in a dark place. 😂.”
A different comment read, “8th pic….so relatable 😂.”

Bell and Shepard first met at a dinner party in 2007, but sparks didn’t fly until two weeks later when they reconnected at a Detroit Red Wings hockey game.
The pair, who are both from Michigan, bonded over their shared home state at the game and Bell really started to fall “in love” when Shepard sent her a funny text the next day. They welcomed daughter Lincoln in March 2013 months before tying the knot later that year in October. In Dec. 2014, Bell gave birth to daughter Delta.
Fast forward ten years, the close-knit family currently resides in their L.A. “dream home” that they purchased in 2017.
