How (and When) to Book United Awards Through Partners

Ethan Steinberg

Update: Some offers mentioned below are no longer available. View the current offers here .

The biggest news of the month (and what may remain the biggest points and miles news for all of 2019) was United's announcement that it would be removing award charts and shifting to a more dynamic pricing model later this year. This has had some immediate implications for United-operated awards booked using MileagePlus miles, but there are times when these award tickets are better off booked through partner programs. And unfortunately, this process is a bit more challenging now.

Today we'll go through exactly what you need to know about leveraging partner programs to book United-operated flights in a post-award-chart world.

(GERMANY OUT) Germany - Brandenburg - : airplane of the Star Alliance - Croatia Airlines Airbus A320 at Schoenefeld airport (Photo by Sch?ning/ullstein bild via Getty Images)

Let's start with a quick overview of how you typically book award seats on an airline through one of its partners' programs. Just about all airlines use at least two different award class buckets. The exact names vary, but in frequent flyer parlance, the lower prices are generally termed "Saver" while the higher-priced options are typically referred to as "Standard" or "Everyday" awards. And generally speaking, only Saver awards are available for partner award bookings.

For example, United operates a few daily flights from Newark (EWR) to London-Heathrow (LHR). Let's say that on September 1, you only see standard/everyday awards available for both economy and business class. However, the previous day (August 31) has both classes of service available at the saver level. You should be able to book the August 31 flight using miles from any Star Alliance partner; on September 1, you're likely restricted to using United miles.

Long story short: As long as there is saver-level award space available, you should be able to book United-operated award flights through any Star Alliance loyalty program, including fan favorites Avianca LifeMiles , Air Canada (Aeroplan) and Singapore KrisFlyer .

How Variable Pricing Comes Into Play

Now this is where things start to get tricky, as variable pricing makes it harder to figure out what counts as a "saver" level award. I can't help but assume that this was either intentional or a very happy coincidence that comes along with such a pricing model. After all, if you don't have a good benchmark for what an award ticket should cost, you're much more likely to pay a higher price just to get on the exact flight you want.

Thankfully, United makes it easy to search for saver space in both economy and premium cabins across multiple dates at once, but there's a trick. You'll need to click on "advanced search" and select "my dates are flexible."

united travel sorteio

The search results page will show you a two-month calendar, with blue lines indicating saver economy award space and blue dots showing dates that have saver premium-cabin award space (per the legend on the left). In this case, United's nonstop flight from Newark to Tokyo-Narita (NRT) has a few days over the summer with saver economy space, but none of the flights has saver awards in United's Polaris business class .

united travel sorteio

If your dates are fixed, another option is to look at the individual search results on a specific date. This is where things start to get a bit dicey.

In the above example, you can easily see the difference between business saver and business everyday awards, since each one has its own column. Economy is a bit more confusing. Even though this date shows up on the calendar as having economy saver space, the column is titled "Economy (lowest award)" which is the same thing you'll see on dates that don't have saver space.

Another good fallback option is to use ExpertFlyer, which will only search for saver level award space (unless you override its default settings by inputting a different fare code). If you're planning to book through a partner program instead of directly through United, it might even make sense to start here to avoid confusion. On the EWR-NRT route, ExpertFlyer perfectly matches the United website with no saver level economy award space on August 25th or 26th, but seats available on the 27th and 28th.

united travel sorteio

Thankfully, it appears (for now) that United is still using the "Saver Award" designation on tickets that price lower than the normal prices from the soon-to-disappear award charts. For example, the first flight of the day from Newark to Chicago-O'Hare (ORD) on Tuesday November 19 is pricing at 12,000 miles, a slight discount off the usual 12,500-mile rate for a one-way economy award within the US.

united travel sorteio

Since this is the only nonstop flight available at the saver level for that day, it's the only one that's bookable through LifeMiles:

united travel sorteio

It's also the only one available through Aeroplan ...

united travel sorteio

... and Singapore's KrisFlyer program.

united travel sorteio

However, TPG Family editor Summer Hull has found examples where this is not the case, and discounted awards classified as saver-level with United are not bookable through partner programs. I certainly hope her experiences are just an anomaly, as this would be a big blow to United's Star Alliance partners.

As always, be sure to crunch the numbers on the flight you're looking to book to see if it even makes sense to use miles at all. The above one-way from EWR-ORD is pricing at just $128.30, and it's even cheaper in Basic Economy. You may be better off just booking directly.

Choosing Which Program to Use

Once you've found your United saver award space, the question becomes which Star Alliance program you should book through. The three I mentioned above (Avianca LifeMiles, Aeroplan and Singapore) are great options because they're relatively easy to earn . All of them have partnerships with at least two popular transferable points currencies, including Chase Ultimate Rewards , Amex Membership Rewards and Capital One miles . United-operated flights typically don't incur fuel surcharges when booked through partners, so you're free to pick the program that offers the lowest award rates without worrying about added out-of-pocket costs.

Here are a few examples of what these other Star Alliance programs charge on popular routes (prices are one-way):

(Note that you can also book United-operated flights through ANA Mileage Club, though you're limited to transfers from American Express, and you also must book round-trip award tickets. Nevertheless, picking up round-trip business class flights from the US to Europe for just 88,000 miles could be a steal.)

In many cases these costs are nothing more than a rounding error away from what United would charge for a saver level award (if you're paying 60,000 miles for a business class award, an extra 3,000 miles isn't going to break the bank).

Domestic economy flights are a slightly harder call to make. Avianca LifeMiles' prices United-operated awards within the US as low as 7,500 miles each way if your flight stays within a single US 'zone' (generally east coast, central and west coast). Meanwhile, as you can see above, both Singapore and Aeroplan charge 12,500 miles each way, a price that matches United's traditional saver-level rate.

However, here's my recommendation: Only book a domestic, United-operated flight using partner miles if United is pricing the award at 12,500 miles . Why? In cases where these awards fall below that rate, paying for the flight directly is often a better value. 5,000 miles for a one-way award ticket sounds great in theory, but if you can purchase that flight for just $78.30, it may be better to save your miles for a more expensive ticket.

united travel sorteio

While everyone has his/her own way of determining what makes for a good redemption, you'll generally get the best value for your miles by booking when revenue prices are high. With United's new variable pricing, that tends to happen domestically when one-way awards are showing up at 12,500 miles.

When to NOT Use a Partner Program

There are two additional considerations that come into play when you're picking a program through which to book United-operated award flights, and they're both connected to the carrier's credit card offerings.

1. Checked bag fees : Most airlines will waive your first checked bag fee if you hold one of their cobranded credit cards, but United does things a bit differently. Holders of the United Explorer Card (and one companion traveling on the same reservation) are eligible for one free checked bag on United-operated flights, and those with the United Club Infinite Card and a companion can get two free checked bags. However, you must use your United card to purchase the ticket, which includes the taxes and fees on the award, and must have your MileagePlus number on the reservation. As a result, if you're counting on a checked bag fee waiver thanks to either of those cards, make sure you use it for the taxes & fees and then switch your frequent flyer number on the reservation to your United account.

2. Additional award inventory : In addition to the checked bag fee waiver, United cardholders also enjoy access to enhanced saver award availability on United-operated flights. This may give you additional flights that aren't otherwise available to partners, but early tests of United's new dynamic award pricing show that discounted awards are frequently pricing at 1,000 miles lower for cardholders. As a result, if you have a United credit card, be sure to login to your MileagePlus account so you have an accurate picture of availability and pricing before jumping to book with a partner program.

Bottom Line

United's impending removal of award charts has many implications, but as of now, it's still clearly delineating between saver awards (those bookable with partner currencies) and non-saver awards (those bookable solely through the MileagePlus program). I'm hopeful that will remain the case, as it allows you to potentially utilize partner programs like Avianca LifeMiles to get an even better value for your awards. However, as always, be sure to crunch the numbers on these tickets to make sure it even makes sense to book an award ticket at all. If the paid rates are low enough, you may want to use a fixed-value currency or simply pay for the ticket outright.

Sometimes the best reason to have an airline credit card isn’t necessarily for the miles you can earn and redeem, it’s for the perks.

You can earn far more points using Chase credit cards like the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card and the Chase Freedom Flex℠ * The information for the Chase Freedom Flex℠ has been collected independently by Blueprint. The card details on this page have not been reviewed or provided by the card issuer. than you will from the cobranded United credit cards issued by Chase. And since you can transfer Chase Ultimate Rewards® points into United MileagePlus miles, there’s little reason to use a United card just to earn miles.

Instead, you should have a United MileagePlus card for its benefits, including free checked bags and discounts on in-flight purchases.

But there’s one other important benefit that you rarely see mentioned by Chase or United. MileagePlus cardmembers are eligible for “special member pricing” that’s otherwise reserved just for those with elite status. Just by having a United MileagePlus credit card, you’ll get the same, lower pricing that United elite status holders have access to, which can mean significant mileage savings on award flights.

What is “special member pricing”?

Let’s say you wanted to fly from Denver to Paris this summer. When I searched for flights on July 11, 2024, and filtered out options with more than one stop, I found flights starting at 70,000 miles.

united travel sorteio

But once I added my card to my MileagePlus account and logged in as a cardholder, the same options were available starting at just 40,000 miles.

united travel sorteio

You’ll notice that the lower priced options have a small notation indicating that it’s granted “special member pricing.” And true travel nerds might notice that the higher priced option shows a fare code of YN, while the lower priced option shows the code of XN, which is reserved for cardmembers and those with elite status.

Which credit cards offer United’s special member pricing?

All United MileagePlus credit cards issued by Chase include this benefit, which includes:

  • United Gateway℠ Card * The information for the United Gateway℠ Card has been collected independently by Blueprint. The card details on this page have not been reviewed or provided by the card issuer.
  • United℠ Explorer Card * The information for the United℠ Explorer Card has been collected independently by Blueprint. The card details on this page have not been reviewed or provided by the card issuer.
  • United Quest℠ Card * The information for the United Quest℠ Card has been collected independently by Blueprint. The card details on this page have not been reviewed or provided by the card issuer.

  • United Club℠ Business Card * The information for the United Club℠ Business Card has been collected independently by Blueprint. The card details on this page have not been reviewed or provided by the card issuer.

Except for the no-annual-fee Gateway card, all of these cards have an annual fee — starting at a $0 intro annual fee for the first year, then $95 for the Explorer card and topping off at $525 for the United Club Infinite card.

If you’re just looking for access to lower-priced flight awards, you might be tempted to get the Gateway card, which comes with a welcome offer of 20,000 miles after spending $1,000 on purchases in the first three months of account opening. Instead, I’d recommend getting either the Explorer card, which currently has a welcome bonus of 50,000 miles after spending $3,000 on purchases in the first three months of account opening, the Quest card, which offers 60,000 miles and 500 Premier qualifying points after spending $4,000 on purchases in the first three months of account opening, or the Club Infinite card, which comes with 80,000 miles after spending $5,000 on purchases in the first three months of account opening.

After having the card for a year, you might decide that you want to keep the card for its other perks. But you can always request a downgrade to the no-annual-fee Gateway card. This move allows you to keep your miles and account open, eliminate the annual fee and continue to enjoy lower-priced flight awards.

Final verdict

The hardest part of award travel isn’t always earning the points and miles, it’s finding efficient ways to spend them. United makes this easy for those with elite status and anyone who holds one of their credit cards. By signing up for the best card offer available and longer-term keeping a no-annual-fee United card open at all times, you can be assured of the lowest prices when you book your United award tickets.

Top Travel Stocks - The Top 3 Travel Stocks to Buy in April 2024

Top travel stocks are catching investors’ eyes with consumer spending patterns revealing resilience despite the economic headwinds.

Though the concerns over a hard landing remain, data indicates that consumers are still happily opening their wallets for travel experiences. Moreover, airfares, car rentals, and hotel rates dipped last month, another catalyst for the travel stocks. According to NerdWallet’s Travel Price Index , travel costs are down 2% on a year-over-year (YOY) basis, highlighting a unique opportunity for consumers and investors alike. Hence, this backdrop sets the stage for savvy investors to bet on travel stocks that could yield healthy returns. That said, here are three strong picks in the travel niche.

United Airlines (UAL)

United Airlines  (NASDAQ: UAL ) is a leading airline operator that has proven to be a marvel of operational excellence. Take it from its latest earning print, which showed another comfortable top-and-bottom-line beat, with solid YOY growth in sales.

According to its management, UAL’s bottom line took a hefty $200 million hit from the Boeing 737 MAX 9 grounding. If it hadn’t been for that, UAL was most likely to deliver another quarterly profit. However, it ended up with a whopping $2.8 billion in operating cash flow and $1.5 billion in free cash flow, soothing investor concerns. Revenues were up almost 10% year over year on the back of stellar gains in Pacific and European regions.

Furthermore, despite the Boeing setback, UAL plans to purchase 61 narrowbody and 5 widebody aircraft this year. Also, it’s looking to expand its mid-continent hubs and build its international network further. Despite the positives, I agree with my fellow InvestorPlace contributor Josh Enomoto that UAL stock is heavily discounted relative to its pre-pandemic levels.

Marriott (MAR)

Marriott  (NYSE: MAR ) is a giant in the hospitality space, which has rebounded remarkably well in the post-pandemic era. With a diverse portfolio of roughly 8,800 properties spanning 139 countries, it has established itself as a bona fide giant in its niche. Additionally, the company has consistently paid dividends since 1995, solidifying its long-standing commitment to returning value to shareholders.

Marriott wrapped up last year, generating sales of $23.71 billion , rising by 14% YOY. Moreover, it expanded its operations last year, adding 81,300 rooms, with revenue per average room (RevPAR) increasing by 15%. Additionally, it’s experiencing solid growth in international markets, especially in the Asia and European regions.

It’s not to say that it’s been all smooth sailing for the hospitality giant in the past year. Its high-end brands, such as Ritz-Carlton, have witnessed a slowdown in RevPAR in recent quarters. This trend suggests a leveling off in demand for luxury accommodations but is likely to be a temporary problem for Marriott.

Corporacion America Airports (CAAP)

Corporacion America Airports  (NYSE: CAAP ) is a leading airport operator in the South American region, with 52 airports under its belt , serving over 80 million passengers annually. With its sizable operations in Argentina, including its primary Buenos Aires airports, and additional facilities in Brazil, Italy, Armenia, and other areas, CAAP’s influence is massive. Upwards of 81.1 million passengers utilized its facilities last year, making it a juggernaut in its niche.

Over the years, CAAP has proven to be a hugely profitable business. It has consistently outperformed the sector with its solid profit margins and return on equity, indicating efficient revenue conversion and shareholder value. Much of it concerns being an airport operator due to their nature as natural monopolies with low operational costs.

Looking ahead, CAAP recently posted an update that passenger traffic will increase by 0.8% YOY in March 2024, which points to an encouraging road ahead. Its stock has been up more than 50% in the past six months but still trades at a relatively attractive 11.31 times trailing twelve-month ( TTM ) earnings.

15 Things to Do in Santa Clara (CA)

Santa Clara is a city of nearly 125,000 residents that’s located in Santa Clara County, about 75 kilometers south of San Francisco .

The city was founded more than 200 years ago as a Spanish Mission. Now, it’s most well-known for its booming tech industry that’s commonly referred to around the world as Silicon Valley.

Though it’s common knowledge to most football fans, it’s a surprise to many to discover that the relatively small city is also the home of the National Football League’s San Francisco 49ers.

Visitors to Santa Clara have abundant activity options at their fingertips without venturing outside city limits, so staying engaged and entertained shouldn’t be an issue.

1. Levi’s Stadium

Levi's Stadium

With a capacity of nearly 70,000, Levi’s Stadium on Marie P. DeBartolo Way in Santa Clara is one of the country’s premier professional football stadiums.

The 49ers play their home games here, and during the off-season, the stadium hosts a variety of annual events, including concerts featuring big names in the music industry.

Taking a family to a football game isn’t the least expensive activity option in the area, but for those who’ve never taken in a pro game, it’s an exhilarating experience that may be worth the cost.

Guided tours are also regularly available, and the bars and restaurants around the stadium are fun to visit year-round.

2. Ulistac Natural Area

Ulistac Natural Area

Despite its large population and the overall hustle and bustle, the Bay Area features plenty of urban parks and natural areas that are convenient options for those interested in enjoying the great outdoors.

The Ulistac Natural Area is located on Lick Mill Road in Santa Clara. It is comprised of more than 40 acres that include a variety of distinct environments.

The natural area straddles the Guadalupe River and is home to an array of plants and animals that are well-suited to its riparian habitat.

A particularly popular attraction for bird watchers, it features a number of well-marked nature trails dotted with interpretive signs.

3. Santa Clara Art & Wine Festival

Santa Clara Art & Wine Festival

Californians take their art and wine seriously, and there’s no better way to combine the two than by visiting the Santa Clara Art & Wine Festival.

The event is held in the city’s Central Park and features nearly 200 vendors from across the country selling fine art and crafts, gourmet food, and a vast selection of California’s best wines.

Proceeds are donated to worthwhile causes that benefit residents in need. It all takes place in the early fall when the central California weather is perfect for outdoor activities.

Other highlights include live entertainment and lots of art-related activities for kids.

4. The de Saisset Museum

de Saisset Museum

Though he’s not exactly a household name for those who don’t typically travel in West Coast art circles, Ernest de Saisset was one of the Bay Area’s most prominent artists in the 19th century.

Saisset was a French immigrant who enrolled in Santa Clara University and studied painting as a young man.

The museum that now bears his name is located on the university’s campus. It includes a collection of more than 100 of his most impressive works.

It’s as much a historical attraction as it is an art one, and it also has other works from European and American artists dating back hundreds of years.

5. Intel Museum

Intel Museum

Intel is one of the titans of the tech world. Over the years, it has been responsible for some of the most significant technological leaps forward in computer hardware.

The Intel Museum is located on the campus of the company’s world headquarters in Santa Clara, and it’s regularly open to the public.

Even for those who don’t fall into the tech-savvy category, it’s a fascinating place that’s definitely worth an hour or two of time.

Though it may sound dry to technophobes, it’s packed with interactive exhibits for visitors of all ages, so it’s great for kids with short attention spans too.

6. Santa Clara Farmers’ Market

Farmers Market

There’s really no better way to rub elbows with locals, enjoy pleasant weather, and have access to tons of great products you won’t find elsewhere than by visiting a farmers’ market.

The Santa Clara Farmers’ Market is open year-round and features a little bit of everything – from seasonal produce and fresh baked goods to health and body products and prepared food items.

Held on Jackson Street near the downtown area, it’s common to find different items each time you go.

Spending a few bucks is a great way to support local farmers and entrepreneurs, and don’t be shy about asking them for suggestions for things to see and do while in town.

7. California’s Great America

California's Great America

There’s no shortage of theme parks in the Golden State, but there’s one clear choice for those visiting Santa Clara.

California’s Great America is located on Great America Parkway just outside of town. It features tons of rides, dining options, kid’s activities, and a water park that’s a huge draw during the hot summer months.

Though Great America can really draw a crowd during peak times when kids are enjoying their summer vacations, previous guests have noted that wait times for rides weren’t overly long.

Many families choose to spend an entire day on-site to avoid wasting valuable recreational time in the car.

8. Mission Santa Clara

Mission Santa Clara

Mission Santa Clara is one of the city’s premier historic sites, and it’s now conveniently located on the campus of Santa Clara University.

The mission was established by Franciscans in the 1770s to spread Christianity to the area’s Native American population.

Sadly, things didn’t go according to plan; due to several natural disasters, the mission was forced to move from its original site to where it is now.

Over the years, it was also run by the Jesuits. Though it’s no longer functioning in its original role, it now doubles as a museum and chapel that are open to visitors.

9. The Triton Museum of Art

Triton Museum of Art

Though guests tend to visit the Triton Museum of Art for the works in its collection, its stunning contemporary architecture usually makes a big impression as well.

The museum’s collection includes works from all over the country, but its emphasis is on pieces created by Bay Area artists using local people and scenery as inspiration.

The grounds also include a sprawling outdoor sculpture garden spread over nearly seven acres, and a home from the mid-1860s that’s among the most well-preserved examples of historic American architecture in the area.

The museum is located on Warburton Avenue, and most visitors spend a few hours on-site.

10. Santa Clara Players

The Santa Clara Players traces its roots all the way back to the early ‘60s, when a group of local performers began putting on small shows for the community.

Now nearly seven decades later, they’re still going strong. Their annual performances run the gamut from dramatic theater and mystery to satire and humor.

The players are part of a community theater group staffed by talented volunteers dedicated to providing high-quality, family-friendly entertainment at a reasonable cost.

They’re located on Don Avenue in Santa Clara and offer lots of volunteer opportunities for budding actors and stagehands.

11. Central Park

Santa Clara Central Park

Featuring lots of wide-open spaces and massive swimming and community rec centers, Santa Clara’s Central Park is a go-to destination for activity minded visitors looking to make the most of their limited vacation time without traveling to more distant attractions.

The park is centrally located on Keily Boulevard, has ample parking, and features lots of outdoor amenities and recreational activity options.

From tennis and basketball to softball, lawn bowling, and a big playground, there’s really no excuse for getting bored while on-site. For those looking to spend a relaxing afternoon, there are a lake, built-in BBQs, and public restrooms.

12. The 49ers Museum

49ers Museum Located In The Levi’s Stadium

Even for those who won’t be in Santa Clara during the regular season, the 49ers stadium and museum are fun attractions worth visiting for sports-minded visitors.

The museum is located inside Levi’s Stadium and features nearly a dozen distinct galleries that are open to the public year-round.

It’s a fun and educational experience for visitors of all ages. In addition to football, its exhibits touch on science, technology, and art in a way that engages and entertains young and old minds alike.

Most guests check out the introductory video in the visitor’s center before showing themselves through the impressive collection of trophies, balls, and Super Bowl memorabilia on display.

13. The Santa Clara Fire Museum

Santa Clara Fire Museum

The Santa Clara Fire Department’s roots run all the way back to the 1850s when it was founded.

The museum is now located on Walsh Avenue in an unused training center behind the city’s new fire station.

It sports an impressive collection of equipment and historical memorabilia that give visitors unique insights into the lives of fire and rescue personnel in years past.

The museum’s highlights include a fully restored Model-T fire truck that served for two decades, beginning in the 1920s.

The knowledgeable local volunteer staff also offer regular programs geared at educating the public about fire safety and prevention issues.

14. Edward Peterman Museum of Railroad History

Edward Peterman Museum of Railroad History

The Edward Peterman Museum of Railroad History is run by a local historical society. It is housed in the depot of a now-defunct railroad on Railroad Avenue in Santa Clara.

Like many local historical attractions, the museum is staffed by local volunteers who love answering questions and showing first-time visitors around.

The museum’s exhibits include a variety of railroad equipment and memorabilia, including signals, safety equipment, and historical photographs dating back over 100 years.

The museum is regularly open to the public. It maintains an extensive library of books relating to railroad development and local history as well.

15. Voyager Coffee

Voyager Coffee, Santa Clara

Though it has only been around since 2016, Voyager Coffee’s owner and staff are dedicated to the noble pursuit of making their customers happy.

They do this largely by providing world-class coffee, but also by offering a comfortable space in which guests have opportunities to build relationships with like-minded customers.

Many of their coffees sport internationally influenced flavors, and they’re often infused with things like orange essence and cherry blossom water.

Don’t worry if you prefer your coffee straight-up, because they’ve got more traditional brews as well.

They offer fresh pastry and baked goods, tea, and other non-coffee drinks too.

On April 24, 2024, the MICHELIN Guide revealed the brand new list of One, Two, and Three Key hotels in the United States. In this first ever announcement of MICHELIN Keys in the United States, hotels in Atlanta, California, Chicago, Colorado, Florida, New York, and Washington DC were eligible for the distinction. This announcement of the most outstanding hotels in the country comes four years into a comprehensive refresh of our hotel selection. The MICHELIN Guide now includes over 5,000 hotels across the world, and not a single one is simply a room for the night. These are places that significantly add to your experience as a traveler, each vetted and judged excellent in five categories: architecture and interior design, quality and consistency of service, overall personality and character, value for the price, and a significant contribution to the guest experience in a particular setting. Which brings us back to the Keys. The culmination of countless hours of evaluation by our team of experts, the Key hotels below represent the highlights of our broader selection. Like the MICHELIN Stars for restaurants, the MICHELIN Keys are our most outstanding hotels. In total, the 2024 MICHELIN Guide hotel selection in the United States includes 11 Three Key hotels, 33 Two Key hotels, and 80 One Key hotels. Want to know more about the MICHELIN Key? Here’s everything you need to know . Or, head below to look at all the Keys.

Highlights of the United States 2024 Key Hotel List

The Aman New York — New York, New York

The Three Key Club in New York City

Expect: The highest luxury and impeccable design in Soho, Midtown, and the Financial District. Within the small club of Three Key hotels in the United States, four make their home in New York City. The Aman New York (Midtown) and Casa Cipriani (the Financial District) both make use of glamorous Beaux Arts buildings, the former a gold-crowned skyscraper in Midtown, the latter a glamorously restored ferry terminal at the very southern tip of Manhattan. Each is a refuge: an elegant, painstakingly designed escape from bustling city life. Meanwhile, two Firmdale hotels round out the list of Three Key hotels in New York City. Each is a quintessential example of the style and execution of the group’s co-owner and interior designer, Kit Kemp. Jewels on the Coast: Up and Down California

Its sheer breadth of size and variety means it’s no surprise to announce California as the state with the most Key hotels in America. Here, we’ll point you towards coastal gems like the sublime architectural achievements in Big Sur ( Post Ranch Inn and Ventana ), beachside luxuries in Santa Monica (in particular: the newly opened Georgian ), and wine country favorites like SingleThread and the Madrona . What we love: how each one of these hotels opens the door to the very best of their locations — and gives us a look at each setting through fresh eyes.

The Chicago Athletic Association — Chicago, Illinois

Across America: The Golden Age of Celebrity

Our French Keys bask in the tradition of ancient vineyards, stone chateaus, and historic palaces. In the United States, we see a different tradition. In Los Angeles, places like Chateau Marmont , the Paramour Estate , Sunset Tower , and the Charlie date back to guests and residents as illustrious as Clark Gable and Marilyn Monroe. These are spaces that play ingeniously with their history, even as they forge ahead with cutting-edge amenities and experiences. But it’s not just California. New York’s historic artist hotspot, the Hotel Chelsea , once hosted Bob Dylan and Andy Warhol. Today, it decorates every space with art donated by former residents. Look too to the Chicago Athletic Association , a former member’s club for 20th century business magnates and athletes — now among the city’s most impressive and vibrant hotels. Automatic Refunds and No More Hidden Fees: D.O.T. Sets New Rules for Airlines

The Transportation Department issued new requirements on refunds when flights are canceled or delayed and on revealing “junk” fees before booking. Here’s what passengers can expect.

A blue airport screen showing extensive cancellations and delays is shown in close up with a man standing in front of it.

By Christine Chung

The Transportation Department on Wednesday announced new rules taking aim at two of the most difficult and annoying issues in air travel: obtaining refunds and encountering surprise fees late in the booking process.

“Passengers deserve to know upfront what costs they are facing and should get their money back when an airline owes them — without having to ask,” said U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg in a statement, adding that the changes would not only save passengers “time and money,” but also prevent headaches.

The department’s new rules, Mr. Buttigieg said, will hold airlines to clear and consistent standards when they cancel, delay or substantially change flights, and require automatic refunds to be issued within weeks. They will also require them to reveal all fees before a ticket is purchased.

Airlines for America , a trade group representing the country’s largest air carriers, said in a statement that its airlines “abide by and frequently exceed” D.O.T. consumer protection regulations.

Passenger advocates welcomed the new steps.

Tomasz Pawliszyn, the chief executive of AirHelp, a Berlin-based company that assists passengers with airline claims, called it a “massive step forward and huge improvement in consumer rights and protection” that brings the United States closer to global standards in passenger rights.

Here’s what we know about the D.O.T.’s new rules, which will begin to go into effect in October.

There’s now one definition for a “significant” delay.

Until now, airlines have been allowed to set their own definition for a “significant” delay and compensation has varied by carrier . Now, according to the D.O.T., there will be one standard: when departure or arrival is delayed by three hours for domestic flights and six hours for international flights.

Passengers will get prompt refunds for cancellations or significant changes for flights and delayed bags, for any reason.

When things go wrong, getting compensation from an airline has often required establishing a cumbersome paper trail or spending untold hours on the phone. Under the new rules, refunds will be automatic, without passengers having to request them. Refunds will be made in full, excepting the value of any transportation already used. Airlines and ticket agents must provide refunds in the original form of payment, whether by cash, credit card or airline miles. Refunds are due within seven days for credit card purchases and within 20 days for other payments.

Passengers with other flight disruptions, such as being downgraded to a lower service class, are also entitled to refunds.

The list of significant changes for which passengers can get their money back also includes: departure or arrival from an airport different from the one booked; connections at different airports or flights on planes that are less accessible to a person with a disability; an increase in the number of scheduled connections. Also, passengers who pay for services like Wi-Fi or seat selection that are then unavailable will be refunded any fees.

Airlines must give travel vouchers or credits to ticketed passengers unable to fly because of government restrictions or a doctor’s orders.

The vouchers or credits will be transferable and can be used for at least five years after the date they were issued.

Fees for checked baggage and modifying a reservation must be disclosed upfront.

Airlines and ticket agents are now required to display any extra fees for things like checking bags or seat selection clearly and individually before a ticket purchase. They will also need to outline the airline’s policies on baggage, cancellations and changing flights before a customer purchases a ticket.

The rules, which apply to all flights on domestic airlines and flights to and from the United States operated by foreign airlines, have varying start dates.

For example, automatic refunds must be instituted by the airlines within six months. But carriers have a year before they’re required to issue travel vouchers and credits for passengers advised by a medical professional not to fly.
