In the fertile valley of the Apies River, at the foot of the Magaliesberg range, Pretoria is known as the Jacaranda City, thanks to the blaze of purple blooms that brighten its many parks and gardens in the spring. Pretoria is also the administrative capital of South Africa , sharing capital city status with Cape Town and Bloemfontein . The city lies about 55 kilometers from Johannesburg , yet the two cities seem a world apart.

Pretoria is a city of civil servants, diplomats, and trim and tidy residential districts with a large population of Afrikaners. It is also an important industrial town and an educational and cultural hub. The Pretoria National Botanic Garden, in the city's eastern suburbs, is a peaceful oasis close to the city. The 76-hectare gardens spotlight South African species, with more than half the country's tree species, as well as many flowering plants, cycads, aloes, and other impressive collections. A quartzite ridge slices the park into two sections, with vegetation in the warmer north-facing half contrasting with that in the colder south-facing section.

The plants are grouped according to their climatic region, such as the savannas of the Karoo, coastal forests, and the grassland plains of Namibia. Paved nature trails lead through the natural vegetation of the rocky ridge above the garden. High on a hilltop south of the city center, the Voortrekker Monument is a South African National Heritage site and one of the country's most visited historic monuments. It was built in 1949 to commemorate the Voortrekkers, the Boers who pushed northward into unknown territory in the mid 19th-century.

This 40-meter-high square granite structure is a prominent landmark in the city with steps leading up to the Hall of Heroes, where 27 marble reliefs depict the Great Trek of 1838. Surrounding the monument is a wall depicting ox-wagons representing the trek wagons. On 16 December each year, a shaft of sunlight shines through an opening in the dome and illuminates a cenotaph below, which reads. "Ons vir jou, Suid-Afrika" ("We are for you, South Africa").

Occasionally, the hall hosts classical music performances, which highlight its excellent acoustics. Museum exhibits depict snapshots of life during this important period. After browsing the interior, visitors can admire panoramic views of Pretoria from the roof or enjoy a meal at the restaurant.

Spanning 85 hectares, the National Zoological Gardens of South Africa provides a full day of animal fun for the family. This large zoo encompasses a walk-through aviary, a reptile house with a collection of animals from all over the world, as well as the country's only inland aquarium where visitors can see many species of fish including ragged tooth sharks.

Among the large mammal collection, highlights include the lion and tiger exhibit, hippos, and elephants. This non-profit center was established in 1971 as a cheetah breeding project and has since successfully bred African wild dogs, Cape vultures, and brown hyenas among other animals.

The center was also the first breeder of the rare king cheetah. Visitors can choose from a variety of educational tours, including a three-hour guided tour and touch experience, where guests accompany keepers on the feeding rounds and enjoy a petting experience with these graceful animals. Designed by Sir Herbert Baker in 1913, this impressive range of sandstone buildings mixes Italian Renaissance, English Renaissance, and Cape Dutch styles. It's the seat of government and also houses the offices of the president and the state archives.

A haven for hikers and nature lovers, Moreleta Kloof Nature Reserve spans 100 hectares in the foothills of Moreleta Kloof near the city center. In the 19th century, the reserve was a dairy farm, and one of the original buildings has been converted to a restaurant where visitors can dine on a beautiful deck, often with a parade of animals in view.

Springbok, impala, bushbuck, zebra, and ostrich are among the wildlife found in the park, as well as an abundance of birds. A tributary flows through the reserve providing water for the animals, and hiking trails range in length from 1.5 kilometers to more than three kilometers.

Other lovely green spaces close to the city center include Faerie Glen Nature Reserve , part of the Moreleta Spruit Nature Trail, which follows a winding course along the banks of a stream through ever-changing scenery, as well as Groenkloof Nature Reserve with hiking, horseback riding, and 4WD trails. Birders will enjoy the Austin Roberts Bird Sanctuary, named after the South African ornithologist who wrote a popular handbook on the birds of South Africa. On the outskirts of Pretoria, Rietvlei Nature Reserve offers a peaceful escape to nature and great game viewing less than a 20-minute drive from the city center. The dam was built during the Great Depression, and now constitutes 15 percent of Pretoria's water supply, as well as supporting a range of highveld game that was reintroduced to the area. Eland, red hartebeest, buffalo, blesbok, waterbuck, zebra, black wildebeest, hippo, and even cheetah are among the animals found here. Birders should keep a lookout for the comical secretary birds, as well as the blue crane, South Africa's national bird, and a breeding pair of fish eagles.

The reserve encompasses 3,800 hectares of rolling hills, sprawling grassland, well-marked roads, and of course, the dam itself, where anglers can cast their lines from the northern and western shores. Inside a modest Victorian on Church Street, the Kruger House Museum is the oldest and best known house in Pretoria. From 1883 to 1900, it was the home of Paul Kruger, President of the former Transvaal Boer Republic.

Today it has been turned into a museum with mementos and exhibits relating to his life and the politics of the time. Note the two stone lions on the verandah. They were gifted to President Kruger for his birthday in 1896 by the Northern Cape mining magnate Barney Barnato.

From walking with baby lions to horseback safaris, Horseback Africa is a private wildlife reserve just under 50 kilometers from Pretoria and one of top attractions in the area. The Lion Tours are the most special experience here. The mission is to create greater awareness of animal conservation while allowing you to interact with young lions up to one year old.

Begin in the garden feeding the baby lion cubs and learning interesting facts about their species. Then take a walk with the adolescent lions through the reserve. While amazing for guests, the walks are also super important to the lions who need to hone their hunting skills. That said, the lions often ask to stop and cuddle.

Beyond the big cats, the reserve offers horseback riding safaris that let you get up close and personal with other wildlife like zebra, wildebeest, kudu, and giraffe on trail rides. The European-style Hazel Food Market is one of the top things to do in Pretoria on a Saturday. Located adjacent to the Greenlyn Village Centre in the Menlo Park suburb, the market has more than 70 stalls selling everything from artisanal breads to fresh fruits and veggies, flowers, baked goods, and local meats like biltong.

You'll also find a wide range of prepared food from South Africa and the globe with Thai, Mexican, Indian, and American BBQ all among the international choices. When it comes to a taste of South Africa, try the sosaties (a skewer of BBQ meat) or the koeksisters (deep-fried dough with syrup).

Covering an entire city block, the Pretoria Art Museum has been around since the 1930s. It was originally established to house the City Council of Pretoria's Art Collection after a large donation of 17th-century pieces from the "New Dutch" school.

Over the decades, the museum's collection has increased and now focuses mainly on South African art. The permanent collection has more than 3,000 pieces on display, including works by South African masters like Henk Pierneef, Irma Stern, and Pieter Wenning, among others. It also has a contemporary art collection with pieces by the likes of Sam Nhlengethwa, Judith Mason, and Lucas Sithole.

The museum decided to focus on South African art because Cape Town and Jo'burg already had substantial European art collections from the 17th to the 19th centuries. It hosts a permanent collection, as well as national and traveling exhibitions. These include shows by local artists, and some of the pieces are for sale.

Pretoria is also home to some excellent galleries. If landscape art is your jam, then pay a visit to the Chris Tugwell Gallery. One of South Africa's top landscape artists, Tugwell works mostly in oil, and his pieces have a subtle quality that intrigues. Located in the Brooklyn Mall Shopping Center, the gallery also features ceramics, bronzes, and sculptures from other top South African artists.

15 Best things to do in Pretoria

South Africa is known for its wildlife. However, cities like Pretoria have a wealth of attractions which have kept me enthralled and entertained every time I’ve visited. Who better then to share their thoughts on Pretoria’s best things to do than a confirmed lover of all things South African? Celebrating this incredible country has even become my day job!

Although just 40 minutes from Johannesburg by Gautrain rail, South Africa’s ‘Jacaranda City’ is a very different beast. It’s certainly more conservative in outlook than Jozi, but also arguably more attractive to explore. Not only are there a slew of impressive buildings, but also some 50,000 purple-bloomed jacaranda trees. Even when they’re not in bloom (in October and November), there’s still plenty to delight. From parks to museums, these are the 15 best things to do in Pretoria.

1. Freedom Park Heritage Site & Museum

Named after the father of the first president of the former Transvaal Republic, Marthinus Pretorius, historic racial discrimination and the apartheid era looms large in Pretoria. Freedom Park was created as a way of honoring and remembering those involved in the struggle for democracy, alongside South Africans who died during the country’s wars.

The centerpiece of the park on Salvokop Hill is a simple ring of upstanding stones marking figures such as Steve Biko, killed by apartheid security agents in 1977. A peaceful place to ponder the beauty of Pretoria’s surrounding landscapes, Freedom Park also contains the ‘//hapo’ building. Here you’ll find a potted history covering no less than 3.6 billion years.

2. Union Buildings

The Union Buildings are situated on another hill, Meintjieskop, overlooking Pretoria’s central neighborhoods. The offices of the South African president, Nelson Mandela’s historic inauguration as president took place here in 1994.

Today, the great man is honored with a literally larger-than-life bronze statue in the wonderfully maintained gardens. Open to the public daily, the gardens are a much-loved part of the city, used by locals, visitors, and even the occasional visitor to the president. Their heritage and significance to the country’s history makes a visit to the Union Buildings unmissable.

3. Pretoria Art Museum

The sleek, single-story lines of Pretoria Art Museum are the perfect backdrop to discovering one of South Africa’s most important art collections. Founded in 1930, the early items obtained by the museum mainly comprised 17th century artworks from Europe, as was common at the time.

Now though, Pretoria Art Museum has expanded its collections to include many of South Africa’s leading artists. Look out for landscapes by Henk Pierneef, sculpture by Anton van Wouw, and canvases by once-exiled painter Gerard Sekoto.

4. Church Square

For the heart of historic Pretoria, make a beeline to Church Square (Kerkplein). A statue of another president of the Transvaal, Paul Kruger, sits on its central plinth. It was created by Anton von Wouw.

On the square’s edges stand a number of significant buildings, including the Palace of Justice, Ou Raadsaal, Tudor Chambers, and Old Netherlands Bank Building. The Palace of Justice is rich in Victorian detail, though the structure is perhaps best known for events inside. That’s because it was here that Nelson Mandela was tried during the Rivonia treason trial which led to his imprisonment for 27 years.

5. Pretoria National Botanical Garden

A short distance east of Church Square, this is one of nine national botanical gardens in South Africa. Comparatively small in stature, with an area of 76 hectares, it still manages to span a huge variety of landscapes, covering succulents, wetlands, grasslands, and medicinal gardens. There’s also an arboretum, artificial waterfall, and a restaurant.

One of the best ways to explore is by following the short Dassie Walking Trail. Sightings of these cute mammals isn’t guaranteed, but joining it for even a small distance will put you within touching distance of a multitude of natural wonders.

6. Voortrekker Monument

The Transvaal Republic formed after Dutch-speaking settlers to South Africa left Britain’s Cape Colony in the mid-1800s in order to live independently of Britain. Calling themselves voortrekkers (pioneers), but also known as Boers, their Great Trek is part of the founding story of South African colonization.

This huge monument, rising 40 meters, was built in the 1930s. Its interior includes the world’s largest marble frieze in the Hall of Heroes, which comprises 27 panels. There’s also a Cenotaph decorated with the flags of the Boer Republics, alongside artefacts from the Great Trek. Although this can all feel a little at odds with the modern rainbow nation, it’s a fascinating insight into the minds of these early European settlers all the same.

7. South African State Theater

Impressive in both size and scope, the South African State Theater is the largest complex of its kind in Africa. In a Brutalist architectural style of raw unfinished concrete, it contains six performance spaces, and is capable of seating 2,700 people.

The Theater’s long list of monthly shows and events is a who’s who of South African and international talent. Comprising everything from new plays to fringe festivals, it’s well worth checking out the latest schedules before arriving into Pretoria to see what’s on.

8. Ditsong National Museum of Natural History

This natural history museum has the sorts of displays of taxidermy animals and cases of insects you’re probably already expecting. What makes the Ditsong National Museum of Natural History stand out among similar attractions is its vast fossil exhibits.

These include incredibly important hominid fossils from several sites within the nearby Cradle of Humankind UNESCO World Heritage Site, including Sterkfontein, Kromdraai, and Swartkrans. The star of the entire museum is a fossil known as Mrs Ples – the most complete skull of Australopithecus africanus ever discovered. Mrs Ples has been dated to around 3.4 million years old, and even made it onto a list of Great South Africans.

9. Hartbeespoort Dam Elephant Sanctuary

Hartbeespoort Dam Elephant Sanctuary is approximately an hour from central Pretoria by road. It provides a home for elephants which wouldn’t survive in the wild in any of South Africa’s famed national parks.

The sanctuary’s elephants are instead looked after by a team of caretakers. Guides also lead visitors through the sanctuary on foot three times a day. An activity only otherwise available in a handful of national parks in Africa, it allows visitors to really get close to these mesmeric creatures.

My tip – head to Hartbeespoort in time for the 8 am tour. You’ll not only find the elephants at their most active in the cool of early morning, but also get to join the caretakers in brushing them down.

10. Fort Klapperkop

Fort Klapperkop was one of four defensive structures built to defend Pretoria against the British during the Anglo Boer Wars of the late 19th century. Dating to 1898, it’s one of the best preserved of Pretoria’s historic forts.

In addition to its long building and defensive bastions, Fort Klapperkop contains a dry moat and one of the large French-built guns known as Long Tom. Despite its perceived importance, the fort was only ever manned by 30 troops, and never fired a shot except in practice.

If you like your music as much as I do, Fort Schanskop might be the fortification for you, since it hosts an outdoor music festival at the end of most months.

11. Van Tilburg Collection

Housed in the Old Arts Building of the University of Pretoria, the Van Tilburg Collection spans a treasure trove of decorative arts. Alongside paintings, its collection includes furniture from the 17th and 18th centuries, as well as the largest collection of oriental ceramics in South Africa.

The latter includes vases from the personal collection of the Kangxi Emperor, who reigned from 1661 to 1722, and 550 pieces of Ming porcelain. Sadly, its small self-portrait of Rembrandt van Rijn was recently proven to be a fake.

12. Burgers Park

You’re unlikely to hear the words ‘do you want onions with that?’ at Burgers Park. Created in the 1870s, this historic green space is named after Thomas Francois Burgers, the fourth president of the Transvaal Republic.

Pretoria’s oldest public park, its wide lawns and curving paths weave between a smorgasbord of attractions, including a cast-iron bandstand, fish pond, and statue of Thomas Burgers. Just opposite is Melrose House, a museum with interiors detailing the shift between Victorian and Edwardian tastes. It also acted as the British military headquarters when Pretoria was occupied for 18 months from June 1900.

13. African Window

The African Window is the name given to the building housing the Ditsong National Museum of Cultural History (DNMCH). With one of the broadest missions of any of Pretoria’s museums, its displays cover everything from Stone Age axheads to early Apple Macs.

Exhibitions comprise a mix of permanent and temporary displays, and looks after an estimated three million artefacts belonging to South Africa’s mix of cultural groups. If you’re short of time, head straight for the galleries containing San rock art thousands of years old.

14. Groenkloof Nature Reserve

Open daily during daylight hours, Groenkloof protects the region’s endangered bankenveld flora. It’s located just 15 minutes south of central Pretoria, between the Fountains Valley resort and Waterkloof Golf Club.

Groenkloof boasts a range of typical South African animals, including kudu, blesbok, giraffe, and jackal. Free of any big cats, the reserve is popular with both cyclists and walkers. There’s a 20 kilometer off-road cycling route, and three hiking trails spanning 3.5 to 10.5 kilometers. That said, the short vehicle route is best for wildlife viewing.

15. Kruger House

Surrounded by modern tower blocks, Kruger House was the city residence of the Transvaal’s best-known president, Paul Kruger. One of the first buildings in Pretoria to get electricity, the house has been laid out with a blend of original and period furnishings, to show how the president would have lived.

The long partially-covered front veranda (or stoep) in particular was known as a spot Kruger liked to sit in. Exhibition halls depict his battle from freedom from the British of Cape Colony, while the grounds feature his presidential railway coach.

Pretoria , the administrative capital of South Africa , is in Gauteng . Its wide avenues are lined with purple-flowered jacaranda trees and stately architecture. The city has many museums and art galleries, and a large student population that gives its centre a boisterous atmosphere.

History [ edit ]

The area known today as Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality, with Pretoria (City) at its centre, is believed to have been occupied by the Sotho people for many centuries. During the 15th century the Ndebele people also migrated into the area and settled along the banks of the Apies River. Tshwane [tsʰwane] is the Setswana name of the Apies River. Around 1820 the Matabele under the leadership of Mzilikaza also entered the region, leading to local conflicts between the Matabele newcomers and the already established Sotho and Ndebele tribes as well as the European "Voortrekkers" who were steadily moving northward through the country. These conflicts came to an end when the Matabele were defeated by the "Voortrekkers" in 1837 at Mosega.

By 1855 there was no known tribe in what is known as the Pretoria area today. Only nomadic groups passed through this area, with one of the Setswana people (so it is alleged) led them. Pretoria was founded in 1855. The first capital of the Zuid-Afrikaansche Republiek (South African Republic) was Ohrigstad, but the capital was moved to Pretoria. After the Second Boer War, the ZAR become Transvaal province, and Pretoria its capital. The city was named after Andries Pretorius, the Boer leader at the Battle of Blood River where the Voortrekkers defeated the Zulus under King Dingaan. In 1856 the area today known as Arcadia was acquired in exchange for a pony and added to the town.

In 1899, during the Second Boer War, Winston Churchill was captured and held as a POW in Pretoria until his eventual escape to Mozambique . British forces captured Pretoria in 1900 and held control over the city until the signing of the Treaty of Vereeniging in 1902.

When the Union of South Africa was established in 1910, Pretoria was elected the capital and is still the administrative capital of the Republic of South Africa today.

Climate [ edit ]

Pretoria is located in a summer rainfall area with hot days regularly followed by short and intense afternoon thunderstorms. The thunderstorms are often accompanied by lightning and occasionally result in hail. Summer temperatures range between 16°C at night to 30°C during the day, with occasionally higher temperatures (up to about 36°C). Winters are mild and dry with temperatures averaging between a minimum of 5°C and a maximum of 20°C. Winter nights and (occasionally winter days) can be surprisingly cold and buildings are generally not well insulated. Bring warm clothes if you're visiting during the winter months.

Five highways join in the Gauteng region, making it accessible from all cities in the country. This would include the N1, N3, N4, N12 and N14 national highways.

Most National Routes (N) are toll roads. Open road tolling (e-toll) is available on the freeways around Johannesburg and Pretoria.

The closest international airport is O.R. Tambo International Airport ( JNB  IATA ) in Johannesburg . The Albertina Sisulu Highway or R21 leads from there to Pretoria. Airport shuttles are available on the airport or can be booked:

• Major bus companies like Apm, Citiliner, Greyhound, Translux, City to City, Intercape Mainliner offer connections to all big cities in South Africa .

• Citiliner fare to Bulawayo is R410. The trip takes 15 hours.
• Apm bus lines have a bus from Pretoria to Capetown every day at 16:00 with a fare of R450.
• Intercape has a sleepliner bus from Pretoria to Knysna every day at 14:00 with a fare of R569.
• Citiliner has a bus going to Mbombela every day at 09:00 with a fare of R200. The trip takes 6 hours.
• Citiliner has a bus going to Kimberley every day at 09:45 with a fare of R275. The trip takes 8 hours.
• Apm has a bus going to Durban every day at 10:30 with a fare of R220. The trip takes 9 hours.

A convenient high-speed rail link, Gautrain , is available between Johannesburg , OR Tambo International Airport and Pretoria. Travellers can access this direct link from the arrivals hall in the airport building. Safe, comfortable Gautrain buses serve local routes from the different stops in Pretoria. The fare from International airport to pretoria is R164. There are frequent commuter trains from Johannesburg which cost R16.50 one way. Metrorail also services other outlying towns and many suburbs of Pretoria.

Long-distance trains from other parts of South Africa generally arrive in Johannesburg , however trains from Musina via Polokwane and from Komatipoort via Nelspruit call in Pretoria.

Get around [ edit ]

Although crime in South Africa is higher than in many other parts of the world, common sense precautions should prevent incidents. Be especially aware of your surroundings after dark and don't travel alone. Main shopping centres are reasonably safe.

Either use a metered taxi, rent a car or use the municipal bus service. There is also a very extensive network of informal, cheap minibus taxis, mostly used by local commuters. These taxis used to have a reputation for being unsafe, but this has greatly improved and most taxis are now relatively luxurious and not overcrowded, except during peak times. Accidents are rare. Ask locals waiting at taxi stops about routes and rates.

Walking is a good option during the day, but may be unsafe after dusk in certain areas, such as central Pretoria.

Bus frequency is best during rush hours. Very old fashioned but good for nostalgists.  
• Uber . Uber is available in Pretoria, but there is a zone surrounding the Gautrain station where pickups and drop-offs are not permitted. The availability of Ubers is not as great as in Johannesburg, so you may encounter difficulties finding one at some of the more distant sights like the Voortrekker Monument.

Being the capital, there are many posh hotels (including the Sheraton) and guest houses and all the usual hotel chains have one or more hotels. With so many hotels owned by the same chains, in particularly Tsogo Sun. Make sure you note the address when booking so you go to the right hotel. When Parliament is in session and when there are other state events it can be almost impossible to find a mid-range or splurge room. Consider nearby Centurion as an alternative if you have to be in Pretoria at those times.

Stay safe [ edit ]

Pretoria is considered to be a relatively safe city by South African standards and violent crime against tourists is somewhat rare. That said, basic common sense should still be used. Ask locals before you do things. Life after sunset stops a bit and moves to the big shopping centers outside the city. Avoid walking around after dark, even in a group or at Union Buildings. The city centre becomes deserted after nightfall, so it would not be wise to hang around at these times. The shop owners will close their security blinds to protect their property so there is little to see. Hatfield Plaza and all other major shopping centers are busy with shoppers, students, tourists, police and car minders until approximately 22:00 there is very little chance of any real trouble happening, but it can be annoying and daunting for tourists as the beggars are quite insistent but occurs less in guarded shopping centers. That said, the Hatfield area is usually perfectly safe. Consider that you still have to move from the safe area to your hotel through an unsafe area. In case of trouble, here are important telephone numbers. Be especially vigilant at night by traffic lights and stop signs. Car-jacking and smash and grab thefts do occur.

Getting there.

Pretoria is located 30km south of the OR Tambo International Airport. Traveling there from the airport is easy, with traveler-friendly transit options like the Gautrain and Uber or Car Rental. From outside of Gauteng, it can be traveled to from longer treks through bus like Greyhound Bus or the luxury Blue Train

Getting Around

Getting around Pretoria is easy thanks to the fact that most of the places you will want to see are concentrated in a small area, between the city centre and the east and Pretoria. The Gautrain runs through three stations in Pretoria. Centurion, Hatfield and the city centre. All the entertainment areas you will be interested in are within a 10-mile radius of Hatfield.

Uber is a good way to get around and will usually not cost more than R150. For long treks beyond the borders of Gauteng, you can take the Blue train which travels between Pretoria and Cape Town. There are other modes of transport but these are not advised due being informal and complicated to use, as well as presenting safety risks.

You don’t need to be driving as a traveler in Pretoria but if you do, here is some things that you will find useful

• The condition of roads is generally good, specifically for highways and the central business district so you will fare just fine in a sedan. No need for a 4×4 or anything of the sort.
• Google Maps is good as your guide and is accurate within the cities and towns. For most of your travels in the tourist destinations, use as it as you know how to.
• You can rent a car from any of the popular car rental companies before your arrival.

Hatfield is a suburb in Pretoria with a high population of students due to it being close to the university of Pretoria. While it used to be renowned for its student nightlife, in what was formerly Hatfield Square, the suburb still houses various restaurants and a buzzing vibe throughout most of the year. There is a shopping mall, Hatfield plaza and it has a Gautrain station there so the place is very conveniently located and easy to travel to.

Cultural Sites In Pretoria

Church square.

Church Square is a historic site that used to serve as the centre of Pretoria and was the site of the first church in Pretoria, hence the name. It is surrounded by several building that show off the neoclassical architecture style of Pretoria’s hub. At its centre, is the statue of the late Boer leader and former president, Paul Kruger. The buildings of architectural significance include the Ou Raadsaal which was Paul Kruger’s Parliament building, The Palace of Justice which is the high court of Pretoria, and the General Post Office which is the first post office in South Africa.

Union Buildings

The Union Buildings are the official seat of government in South Africa and where the president has their offices. They are situated at point in Pretoria. The buildings are home to large lavished gardens where visitors can kick back and take a break from their travels. The beautiful terraced gardens are planted with various indigenous trees. For those photo moments there are numerous monuments on the ground, such as the statue of General Louis Botha which dominates the lawn, and the most popular is the statue of Nelson Mandela, located atop the terraces.

Voortrekker Monument

The Voortrekker Monument is one of the most popular monuments in South Africa. It is 80m high and was designed by Gerhard Moordyk. The monument is surrounded by 64 ox-wagons. At noon on the 16th of December, a shaft of light strikes a cenotaph, commemorating the battle of blood river which took place between the Voortrekkers and the Zulus in 1983.

Pretoria Zoo

Officially known as the National Zoological Gardens of Pretoria , Pretoria Zoo is the largest zoo in the country and the only one that carries a national status. At 85 hectares, it is one of the 8 largest zoos in the world and has placed in the top 10 zoos in the world. The zoo forms an integral part in the conservation of threatened species and breeding programs. You can have a picnic on the green lawns inside the zoo or take a cable car ride for a bird’s eye view over the centre.

National Botanical Gardens

The National Botanical Gardens has 50 hectares devoted to a developed garden that hosts 50% of the South Africa’s tree species. A paved nature trail gives access to the fascinating natural vegetation on the ridge, which boasts a diversity of indigenous fauna and flora. It is both a facility for scientific research and entertainment. Many events are hosted there regularly and you can visit there at your leisure for a picnic or a braai (local term for barbecue).

Pretoria City Hall

This is one of the architectural landmarks of the city. It was built following a competition to design the future city hall of Pretoria. The front of the city hall is adorned by lush gardens and fountains of Pretoria Square. In the garden, there are three statues of Chief Tshwane, whom Pretoria’s district municipality was named after, and of Andries Pretorius and his son Marthinus.

Groenkloof Nature Reserve

The Groenkloof Nature Reserve, near Fountains Valley at the southern end of Pretoria, is the oldest proclaimed nature reserve in Africa, proclaimed in 1895. It offers hiking, cycling, and 4×4 trails for off-road driving. You may even be lucky and see zebra, wildebeest, giraffes and many bird species.

• Stanza Bopape Street formerly known as Church Street, is the longest open street in South Africa. It is 26km long and is one of the longest streets in the world.

Parking in the city centre can be limited in the mornings and around midday, especially on weekends. So the chances are having to park and do a fair deal of walking to where you want to go. A good parking facility that you can use that is central to a lot of the venues that you will probably want to visit is the parking under State Theatre. From this parking you can walk to and from all places of interest and the walks will be safe. It is right under State Theatre and within 1 km of all our favourite places in the city centre, like Sammy Marks, Market @Sheds and 012 Central.

Menlyn Park Shopping Centre is the biggest shopping mall in Pretoria and is at the centre of a developing economic hub. The store has many international stores from fashion to food. Buy yourself some new threads at Zara or Armani Exchange, or enjoy Krispy Kreme doughnuts with a Starbucks latte.

Menlyn Maine is a A literal stone’s throw from the mall. It’s a lifestyle hub with boutique stores and luxury apartments. Variety is the name of the game here. Italian clothing stores, restaurants, Starbucks and water bubbler fountains for the kids make Menlyn Maine an ideal spot for the whole family or a solo outing. Irene village mall , on the footsteps of the affluent Conrnwall Hill, with easy access to the R21 highway that leads to the airport just 25 minutes away. It is the first mall in Pretoria when you are coming from the airport so stop by for some light shopping and lunch at one of the many restaurants like Mythos, where the lunch specials offer some of the best bang for buck of any restaurant.

Woodlands Lifestyle Centre is a high end shopping centre in the sprawling Mooikloof suburb. Tucked away in the far east of Pretoria, it is provides a cool escape from the high traffic of the more central malls. Its central counterpart is Brooklyn Mall and Brooklyn Square, a vibrant hub of activity for the discerning shopper.

Things to note:

When eating at restaurants, it is customary to tip 10%. It is not compulsory but more often than not, the waiter’s earnings are solely from the tips. If you are very happy with the service you can tip 20%.

Parking attendants.

Shopping centres and points of interests will have paid parking. In the event where there is no paid parking you are almost guaranteed to have parking attendants. If you are feeling generous you can pay them for directing you to parking spots or watching as you reverse but that is not a must.

Things To Do In Pretoria

Loftus Versfeld is the biggest stadium in Pretoria and home to the Vodacom Bulls. The stadium was built in 1906 and has a capacity of 51,762. There is a rugby game taking place every other weekend so if you are up for a game of “ruggers”, it is a good option whether with friends or as a family affair.

SuperSport Park is the home to the Titans Cricket team and hosts a mix of club and international cricket games regularly. It is a great way to spend a Sunday in a relaxed way with some cold ones and snacks.

Time Square in Menlyn is Pretoria’s mixed use facility for big events. It has a 8500-seater arena that hosts performances and conventions. There is also a casino ther, a multi-storey hotel and a collection of classy restaurants that you can curb your appetite at. Have some sundowners at Altitude Rooftop Bar which gives you a birds eye view of the Menlyn hub.

The nightlife venues in Pretoria are starkly distinct and will depend on your persuasion. For the urban sounds and an African crowd, there is Ayepyep Lifestyle in Menlyn, and Pretoria’s “premium” night club Vanity, which is part of the Taboo brand. Here you will find a mix of Hip Hop and local favourites like House and Kwaito.

For your rock and electric music, with more of a European crowd, longstanding venues like Ty’s and Tiger Tiger will satisfy your needs. There are also a host of smaller bars and pubs, particularly near Hatfield.

Looking for a go-between with a more cosmopolitan vibe? Summit Bar and Grill near Menlyn is a trendy establishment that is good for both chilled vibes during the day and letting loose after the sun has set.

If eclectic and exclusive with a mature atmosphere is what you are looking for, Hazelwood is an upper-class Bohemian enclave with a selection of some of the best restaurants in Pretoria. Fine dining abounds in this hidden jewel and if you consider yourself a connoisseur of lifestyle, this is a place you want to visit.

Cellphone and WiFi Connectivity

In order to keep in touch with people or make calls for bookings, you will have to buy a sim card under one of the local operators. Note that you can’t simply buy a sim card off the shelf in a shop. You need go through the RICA process, which is entails providing information like your Identification details.

The calling rates are relatively high by global standards and mobile data is also quite expensive. When choosing a network operator, there is a trade-off between coverage and price. Vodacom has the best coverage of all the networks but also has the highest data prices. Telkom Mobile has the best data prices hands-down but outside of metropolitan areas, their coverage is not reliable. So if you are remaining in the city or the nearby outskirts, Telkom will fulfill your needs. If you are traveling to remote places, Vodacom or MTN are your best bets for network reception.

There is are WiFi hotspot but not to the extent that some travelers might be used to. You will find hotspots at major malls and points of interest like hotels, restaurants, and major transit stations like airports.

Is Pretoria Safe?

Pretoria is a metropolitan city and you should definitely know your way around when traveling. The place where one needs to be wary of traffic are in certain parts of the city centre and in the townships, which are low-income areas. Of course some adventurous travelers want to get a more authentic experience of what South Africa is and see some of the differences. For that, you must just ideally have a guide.

The city centre is generally safe to walk around during the day. A lot of foot traffic is a good indicator of a place that is safe to roam around. Just keep valuables concealed Do not travel at night on foot at all. Driving at night should also be avoided. While most of the city is safe to drive, there are small parts that you do not want to get lost in and be seen as a target.

When carrying cash or valuable, be practical. In most of the places you will be visiting there will be more than enough VISA and MasterCard ATMs where you can transact so no need to have an unnecessarily large amount of money on your person.

If you plan to visit any of then townships, only do so during the day and with a guide at all times. An easy hack for this is just to ask your Uber driver what places are good to go to and which aren’t.

Malaria-Free

Pretoria is free of environmental diseases so as long as you are planning to remain in Pretoria or the province of Gauteng, there is no need for any medical shot. Only if you are planning to travel to the adjacent province of Mpumalanga as part of your trip, do you need to get a malaria shot and medication.

Safe Tap Water

The tap water in Pretoria is perfectly safe to drink. Most of the water is supplied by Rand Water which regularly publishes quality reports benchmarked against global standards. Nevertheless, there is ample bottled water available if you choose and bottled water stores are also plentiful, where you can buy water by the litre with your own bottles.

Medical Treatment

The medical services in Pretoria are two-fold. Private healthcare is world-class and if you need medical attention, good medical services are available. Public healthcare on the other hand is a great way below the standards you will find at private hospitals. So when traveling, ensure that your travel insurance provided for you to be treated at a Private hospital or practice.

Pretoria is a metropolitan city with all of the creature comforts and sites you can see in many countries. If that is the case, there are some places in the vicinity of Pretoria that you can visit to have the distinctly African experience.

Hartebeespoort Dam

Dinokeng Region

To the north of Pretoria you have the Dinokeng region which has popular tourist destinations for ou to get away from the noise of the city. Dinokeng means “Place of Rivers” which gives you a good inkling of what to expect from the area.

Dinokeng Game Reserve

Dinokeng Game Reserve is home to an array of wildlife and flora. Just 15 minutes outside of Pretoria, it is a malaria free area located on the banks of the Boekenhoutspruit River. You can get the bushveld experience and sleep amid the noises of wild animals. Accommodation is available in the form of self-catering units, lodge units, or camping sites if you want to be as close to nature as it gets.

Cullinan mine is an operating diamond mine that is also a historical site in South Africa. The biggest rough diamond of gem quality, the Cullinan Diamond, was discovered here. The mine operates surface and underground tours from Monday to Saturday. There tour is approximately 4 hours long and visitors must be 16 years or older to go underground. The Roodeplaat Dam Nature Reserve is a popular spots for outdoor activity and bird-watching. You can have a picnic along the edge of the dam or walk the 7km-long hiking trail. If you are lucky you can also spot the wildlife like Zebra, Kudu, and other species of buck, as well as warthogs and jackals among others.

Pretoria is also known as Jacaranda City due to the thousands of Jacaranda trees that exist around the city. The bloom of the Jacaranda trees are the announcement that summer has arrived, seen by streets filled with the petals that turn the city purple. It is quite a sight to behold and eagerly anticipated by locals.

While not as popular as it’s neighboring city, Pretoria is a great destination with a lot of hidden gems located within and on its outskirts. It is a slightly less boisterous destination than its southern counterpart and worth the detour if you are driving through on a trek to the safaris and bush getaways further north.

The Ditsong National Museum of Cultural History provides fascinating insight into Stone Age and Iron Age artefacts, while the Mapungubwe Museum showcases excavated gold ornaments, ivory, ceramics, clay figurines, beads, iron and copper from a 13 th   century Iron Age settlement in Limpopo.

South Africa's national sport is rugby football, and Pretoria’s Loftus Versfeld is home to the Blue Bulls rugby team, one of the country’s top sides. If there’s a match on, don’t miss it.

Any time of year is a good time to visit Pretoria. The average temperature during the summer months is around 28-29ºC (82-84ºF), with none of the humidity you can expect from a seaside city and none of that dry scorching heat found in the Bushveld region. The Pretoria National Botanical Gardens is one of the nine spectacular gardens South Africa has to offer. It spans over 76 hectares of land divided into two bio-domes.

The garden is home to a variety of flora and fauna holding 50% of South African tree species. Up to 50 hectares of the garden is developed and made up entirely of indigenous plant life.

Pretoria is a city of nature, history and political importance. It's the administrative capital on the northeast plains of South and is known as the “Jacaranda City” for it’s many jacaranda trees.

So many changes and developments in and around the city since my last visit; but remains a nice place - especially the Eastern side; however, avoided the city centre and western area because of the recent xenophobic issues.

South Africa is often the victim of many natural disasters such as floods, earthquakes, storms, and wildfires. One of the bigger floods in South Africa occurred in 2011 killing 91 people.

And though usually, the motive of these crimes is theft, rape also occurs from time to time, which is especially relevant for female visitors.

Having said that; common sense goes a long way.

Being aware of your surroundings and taking reasonable precautions should reduce your chances of becoming another crime statistic.

There have also been reports of food and drink spiking, with victims ending up being assaulted and robbed after the incident.

Traveling by a rented car is also not very safe: there have been tragic instances of foreigners being carjacked and murdered.

Half the people are problematic, and they make life hell on the roads, and they bully each other.

Many people love to prove themselves to their friends by picking on random strangers and smashing them to a pulp.

You’re an idiot. Most of this article is nonsense.

I concur with Jay, terrorism threat, when have you heard of an incident in Pretoria. So if you proposing that’s a truth the rest of your assessment is a flaky. Yes there are risks, but a bit of common sense and you will be safe. My suggestion to you is get off the internet, get out of your cave and travel.

So how safe is it really?

Be very careful, it is still very unsafe. I am from this city.

Terrorism risk? What now? Are you on drugs?

Pretoria isn’t safe, but it definitely isn’t a 19. Your climate info is also WAY off. Pretoria goes into the high 30s for parts of summer. I grew up there.

Don’t use the local taxis. Use Uber. Don’t go into townships and don’t speak to locals who seem overly friendly. You’ll be fine.

Stop fearmongering. South Africa is unsafe, but no more unsafe than most poor countries. If you stay out of bad areas and avoid overly friendly people who approach you on the street, you’ll be fine. Also – when the sun goes down, you stay inside; unless you’re in a tourist area with private security. Simple.

The SA Government is the only terrorist you are likely to find, it will not steal property from tourists (yet). I lived there about 12 years in the 1990s but I keep in touch with events. When I was there I never had any trouble, just used common sense. Don’t let a group surround you or distract you while others get behind you. If you are on foot try to keep moving and don’t stop to talk to anyone who is over friendly. Be especially vigilant when driving if you are stopped at red lights. Sunnyside and city centre be on your guard.

Really beautiful with the Jacaranda’s blooming. Didn’t notice a security threat but that said, I went on an alcohol and drug fuelled bender. Ace time, but found you need to find a good coke dealer because quality is shit, so carefully ask at red lights, and flash some tit.

Pretty but rapey

Pretoria in the spring is very beautiful with the Jacaranda trees. I didn’t feel safe at night, but then I was under the influence. Mind you I struck lucky going to the Voortrekker monument and noshed off a hottie in exchange for a couple of cans of Castle and a bowl of crack. Good times.

Tanisha – we are currently doing research on the city because we have some work out there. I have to say that you are f-ing awesome!!! Right now, our biggest concern is being able to find an elephant to travel down the street on. After reading your comments, I’m looking forward to hanging out at the Voortrekker Monument. I’ve already got plenty of Castle, working on the quality bowls. Cheers!!!!!

who do i believe, people say this is a great city and others say its dangerous, i want to know so i can host my around the world tv program with 20 contestants!

Deputy Minister not happy after surprise visit to Pretoria Masters Office

The Deputy Minister of Justice and Constitutional Development John Jeffery is not happy after he paid a surprise visit to the Master’s Office in Pretoria.

The inspection follows a previously unannounced visit to the Cape Town Master’s Office earlier this month.

The Master of the High Court is responsible for, amongst others, the administration of liquidations and deceased estates, as well as the registration of trusts.

Several legal and insolvency practitioners have expressed their concerns regarding serious problems with the Master’s Offices, key among them shocking service delivery and massive backlogs.

The department said service delivery was initially negatively affected by Covid-19 and then further exacerbated by a ransomware cyber-attack last year.

Jeffery and Deputy Chairperson of the Legal Practice Council Adv Kennedy Tsatsawane, conducted an unannounced oversight visit to the Pretoria Master’s Office on Friday, 28 January 2022 to see if any work was being done to stem the tide of complaints.

A number of factors were supposed to have been implemented to improve service delivery at the Master’s Offices.

For example, all staff members were required to be back in the offices, in line with Adjusted Alert level one regulations. Since the IT system restoration, the Guardian’s Fund has been able to continue with payments of recurring maintenance.

A new fingerprint verification server was also restored and deployed to six Master’s Offices across the country. In addition, overtime pay was approved for all offices in a bid to address the backlogs.

But upon his visit, Jeffery was confronted with the same pain points that ordinary civilians have to contend with on daily basis.

While most South African’s resigned themselves to poor services as normality in the Master’s Office, Jeffery found this “not satisfactory.”

The Deputy Minister wanted to establish how well these offices were functioning, whether practitioners and the public were being served timeously and professionally, how long the queues were, whether existing backlogs have decreased and whether there have been improvements in terms of the issuing of Letters of Executorship and Letters of Authority.

“Although the queues were shorter than in Cape Town, queue management and directing members of the public to the correct sections could be improved,” read a statement from the Justice Department.

There were also complaints of staff shortages, equipment taking long to be repaired and an insufficient number of printers.

It was also difficult to understand the logic behind some of the processes being followed. As with the Cape Town Master’s Office, there were complaints of emails and phones going unanswered.

IT issues remain a challenge.

According to the statement, Jeffery “is in ongoing discussions with both the Chief Master and the Director-General of the Department as to finding solutions to the problems being experienced.”

“The Master’s Offices are responsible for the administration of liquidations and deceased estates, the registration of trusts and the administration of the Guardian’s Fund.

“This often means serving the most vulnerable members of our communities, such as the widowed, families who have lost loved ones and children and the elderly in particular,” said Jeffery.

Jeffery will continue unannounced visits throughout the country.

Banyana Banyana, Super Falcons set for epic battle in Pretoria

Both teams are locked in a qualification battle for the women’s football event at the paris olympic games, taking place in a few months..

After a keenly-contested first-leg encounter last Friday at the MKO Abiola stadium, Abuja, in which the Super Falcons prevailed 1-0, the stage is set for another epic clash between the South Africa and the Nigeria national women’s football teams.

Both teams are locked in a qualification battle for the women’s football event at the Paris Olympic Games , taking place in a few months.

Tuesday’s all-important clash is billed for the Loftus Versfeld Stadium in Pretoria.

While the Super Falcons are determined to uphold their undefeated record against Banyana Banyana on South African soil in senior women’s football, their hosts are optimistic they can change the narrative; especially with their current status as the reigning African champions.

Years of dominance

Since Nigeria’s resounding 7-1 victory in a 1995 World Cup qualifier, Banyana Banyana have not secured a win over the Falcons within South Africa’s borders, even though the competition has intensified over the years.

Throughout their 24 encounters (seven in South Africa), Nigeria boasts 15 wins, with five draws and only four losses to South Africa.

One of those draws forced a penalty shootout in the 2018 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations final, which Nigeria ultimately won.

South Africa’s victories came in Bata, Equatorial Guinea (2012 AFCON), Cape Coast, Ghana (2018 AFCON), Lagos, Nigeria (Aisha Buhari Cup), and Rabat, Morocco (2022 AFCON).

Despite the overall advantage, Nigeria has only drawn twice against Banyana Banyana within South Africa. These stalemates occurred in a 2004 Olympic qualifier and a 2012 friendly match.

Talking tough

The Super Falcons, who arrived in Pretoria on Monday, have been talking tough as they are eager to end their 16-year absence at the Olympics.

Captain Rasheedat Ajibade has been instrumental in Nigeria’s recent success against Banyana Banyana, scoring the consolation goal in their 2-1 defeat last year and the winning penalty in the first leg of this qualifier.

She said: “We are not under any illusions. It is going to be a big and tough fight. For us, we have 90 minutes standing between us and the long-elusive ticket to the Olympics, and we will give it our all.

“We want Nigerians to believe in the Super Falcons. The players are motivated by the keen desire to play in the Olympics. Personally, I have played at every tournament you can think of, except the Olympics. The time to do it is now.” Ajibade added.

Another key player, Jennifer Echegini, also reiterated the Super Falcons’ desire to get the job done in Pretoria.

She said: “100%. We want this badly, and when you want something, you go for it, so we are ready, and as long as we get the job done, No one can stop us.”

Though the Super Falcons coach Randy Waldrum rues the missed chances in the first leg, he has hinted his team will adopt almost a similar approach in Pretoria.

He said: “I think we are going to this the same way. We will be confident. One thing is that they may change the tactics a bit, and we can change ours too, but at the end of the day, it comes down to the players.

“We have the same set of players that we had on Friday night against their players. Our players know what’s at stake, and they know we are one game away from achieving their goals of getting to Paris. I feel confident in the players we have that they will go get the results.”

Kickoff at the 51,000-capacity Loftus Versfeld Stadium is set for 7:30 P.M. South African time (6:30 P.M. Nigeria time).
