Travel information
West Sussex and the South Downs are virtually on London’s doorstep, so getting here from the capital couldn’t be simpler. There are direct train services from Victoria and London Bridge. There are also good connecting cross-country services and excellent road links.
For international visitors London Gatwick Airport is in West Sussex.
If you are planning to visit us by train, it pays to book in advance . Return travel from London with Southern Railway can cost as little as £10.
You can bring your bike on the train, but do be aware that at peak times i.e. between 07:00 and 10:00 and 16:00 and 19:00 Monday to Friday, Southern Railway won’t allow non-folding cycles to be carried on their main routes. For all other trains, regular cycles may be carried, although bike space is limited and cannot be reserved. For more information, visit the Southern Railway website.
You may also want to check out the schedule of planned engineering works before you book, to ensure your journey is as smooth as possible.
You can find connections around the county on the South East Community Partnership site here .
Visit WSCC Travel and learn more on how simple it is getting around.

Community Transport Sussex – new Travel Buddy Scheme launched
Community Transport Provider CT Sussex has recently launched a new scheme to establish a network of Crawley Travel Buddies. The scheme involves matching volunteers with Crawley residents who are living with mild to moderate dementia, and need help getting out and about. This will help local residents to maintain a level of independence and provide respite for loved ones/carers. Volunteers can accompany the client on a bus or train to visit friends and family, go on a shopping trip or to medical appointments which would normally require a designated carer. Volunteers can devote as much time to being a ‘Buddy’ as they wish. The scheme will be co-ordinated by Community Transport Sussex, who will provide training and safeguarding for volunteers.
Travel Buddy Co-ordinator Sam Swanson said: “We are working with local healthcare providers, community groups and Crawley Borough Council to establish where the greatest need is for this exciting new scheme.”
Community Transport Sussex is the largest and one of the longest established Community Transport provider in West Sussex. The charity has 6 accessible mini-buses in Crawley based at the Charis Centre. With over 2500 members across the county, we provide accessible transport for anyone who needs it. If you would like more information about the services we provide contact :-
To find out more about volunteering, or the new Travel Buddy scheme – please contact [email protected] or call 01293 523764. Travel Buddy Co-ordinator Sam Swanson will be happy to provide you with more details.
