Mary J. Blige has announced a 23-city tour in support of her 14th studio album Good Morning Gorgeous . The veteran musician will be joined on select dates by “Boo’d Up” singer Ella Mai and rising R&B artist Queen Naija.

The Good Morning Gorgeous tour is scheduled to begin on Sept. 17 with a show at the Greensboro Coliseum in Greensboro, North Carolina. Blige will make stops in Charlotte, Philadelphia, Chicago, Atlanta, Oakland, Las Vegas, New Orleans, Memphis, Brooklyn, Newark, Cincinnati, and more before wrapping at Atlantic City, New Jersey’s Boardwalk Hall on Oct. 29.

General sale for the tour begins on June 17 at 10 a.m. local time via Black Promoters Collective , the coalition partnering with Blige to present cultural experiences backed by black businesses.

“Mary J. Blige has been one of a select handful of artists at the top of our desired list to partner with since the initial construction of The BPC,” BPC co-founder and president Shelby Joyne shared in a statement. “Having her support in our mission so early in the process is a testament to the hard work we have put in to bring superior cultural experiences powered by black business to the masses. We firmly believe this is a match made in heaven and are honored to partner with the Queen.”

The Good Morning Gorgeous tour marks Blige’s first solo headlining trek since 2017’s Strength of a Woman tour. In 2019, she teamed up with Nas for a joint tour billed as The Royalty Tour.

Mary J. Blige (born January 11, 1971) is a decade-spanning American R&B, hip-hop and neo-soul singer-songwriter and actress, hailing from The Bronx, New York, U.S.

Under the influence of R&B/soul legends Aretha Franklin, Gladys Knight, and Chaka Khan among others, Blige earned her first taste of recognition after singing Anita Baker’s “Caught Up in the Rapture” into a karaoke machine at the mall. A recording of the performance was then given by Blige’s stepfather to Andre Harrell, the CEO of Uptown Records, who signed the young Blige to sing backup for a host of acts including Father MC. In 1991 however, Sean Combs, better known as Diddy, showed Blige the ropes and began working on her debut album. “What the 411?” was released in July 1998, and introduced a whole new wave of gritty and unrefined R&B with a strong connection to hip hop. The album went on to sell over three million copies, aided by the No. 1 R&B chart singles “Real Love” and “You Remind Me”.

Combs was once again at the reigns of Blige’s second album “My Life” released in November 1994. Largely written by the singer herself this time, “My Life” debuted at No. 7 on the Billboard 200, and topped the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. The success of her first two albums led to Blige collaborating with the likes of Faith Evans, Method Man, Ghostface Killah, and Jay-Z.

Documenting her tumultuous and unsustainable previous lifestyle, Blige’s third full-length “Share My World” shot to No. 1 on the Billboard 200 in 1997. The album was the singer’s highest-selling album to date, aided by the five hit singles “Love Is All We Need” featuring Nas, “I Can Love You” featuring Lil’ Kim, “Everything”, “Missing You”, and “Seven Days”. In a move away from hip-hop towards the adult contemporary scene, the album “Mary” released in 1999, was an acclaimed album that later earned success for its club-friendly dance remixes.

The new millennium brought the albums “No More Drama” in 2001, “Love & Life” in 2003, the Grammy Award winning “The Breakthrough” in 2005, and the compilation “Reflections” in 2006. Dubbed the “Queen of Hip-Hop Soul”, Blige’s subsequent album “Growing Pains” marked the third successive album which topped both the Billboard 200 and R&B/Hip-Hop Album charts. Shortly after Blige contributed to 50 Cent’s 2007 album “Curtis” and toured as a part of Jay-Z’s Heart of the City tour.

“Stronger with Each Tear” appeared in December 2009, with guest contributions from Drake, Trey Songz and will.i.am, followed by “My Life II… The Journey Continues (Act 1) in 2011. After issuing the Christmas album “A Mary Christmas” in 2013, and contributing to the soundtrack to the comedy film “Think Like a Man Too”, Blige enlisted the help of Disclosure, Sam Smith, and Emeil Sandé for the album “The London Sessions” released in 2014.

Live reviews

Attending a Mary J. Blige concert for me is like going to church. There’s going to be a lot of praising, amen's and hallelujahs. This is just the way it is when Mary is in town. My usual experience at her shows is spiritual, reflective and cathartic. Sometimes I might even catch the “Holy Ghost.” It also always leaves me drained with a hoarse voice the following day. Because I have such high expectations when it comes to Mary and the fact that this was called “The Liberation Tour,” I was a bit surprised that the show ended and didn’t feel as I had previously. Sure, the concert was good, but it wasn’t great. Don’t get me wrong, she still gave a performance I’ll remember. She preached to the choir and we hung onto every word, shouting back when necessary (and taking notes as well). Mary still looks fabulous (who is her trainer and can he/she hook me up?), but her voice wasn’t as pure and crisp as it has been in previous shows. There was something lacking that I can’t quite put my finger on. It seemed like Mary wasn’t at the top of her game. Perhaps she was tired or just having an off night. A friend who attended with me said it might be because Mary has had so much turmoil this year. I wasn’t quite sure what turmoil she was referring to – outside of Mary having issues with her charity FFAWN – so I did some research and didn’t find much that would explain Mary’s demeanor. Changing twice (into a black dress and white outfit with thigh-high leopard print boots), she started the show rocking a red shorts outfit and her trademark sunglasses. The set opened with her version of Chaka Khan’s Ain’t Nobody. Keeping the high-energy pace going, next was Family Affair, followed by Feel Inside and Enough Cryin’. She asked the audience if she could get her “Charlie Wilson on” during Real Love (which led into the Gap Band’s Outstanding). Before launching into Good Woman Down she expressed to the men that, “Fellas, I am a woman and I relate to them, so no disrespect.” At the end of Not Gonna Cry Mary had her own Holy Ghost moment singing repeatedly, “He wasn’t worth it!” I usually take a break during I’m Going Down because the audience has sung this song at every single Mary show I’ve been too. And that’s fine, because I’ve been singing along to all the songs anyway, and I need a moment to collect myself before I go HAM again. I had just one issue, though. Not only did the audience sing I’m Going Down, we also sang portions of My Life and Be Without You. I found this unusual because Mary generally sings all songs. Ending with Be Without You there was no encore. When the house lights turned on, I was a bit perplexed. The show just didn’t seem long enough. And once I realized she only sang one song from Growing Pains (Just Fine), I was even more disappointed.

Mary J. Blige personifies soul and it clearly has a huge influence on both her life and her performance. As she appeared onstage at the iTunes festival, there was a wonderful feeling of warmth resonating from the singer as she took her place behind the microphone to deliver a powerful opener 'Enough Cryin''. She clearly enjoys performing live as her face is adorned with a huge smile as she receives the huge cheers and applause from the crowd.

She explains to the British audience that she has been away for a while so tonight would be a celebration for both of them and she keeps the celebratory vibes with 'The One' and 'Just Fine'. Her soulful vocal travels around the venue with ease and she showcases the reason she is such a celebrated artist. A number of vocal acrobatics amaze the crowd during a jazzed up rendition of 'Therapy'.

For such a soulful artist, not many people could have predicted her to have performed a U2 cover, yet she makes 'One' her own and delivers it in her own signature style. Mass singalong to 'Be Without You' closes a fantastic home coming of sorts as the UK audience leave hoping Mary will return soon.

I, Theresa Speaks, seen MS. Mary J. at my 4th of July bash at the Art Museum in Philadelphia, Pa. She rocked it! Her performance was so on point. I was jamming at home in front of my television. I wished I could have seen her Live. It so happened to be I was off that night from work. She was great! She had at least 6in heels on and she was dancing and singing as if she had on sneakers. I was so amazed! It began to rain but that didn't stop her. She performed until she was finished. I really enjoyed her and her band was really good also. I said if she ever came back to Philly I would go see her. She will be here June 4-5,2022 at the Roots Picnic here in Philadelphia, Pa. Unfortunately, I won't be able to atend the concert because I can't afford the tickets. I wish I could though! Anyway, Mary J. will rock it like she did that year. Thanks for letting me be able to give my review. Mrs. Theresa Speaks 1346 W. Toronto St. Phila., Pa. 19132-2417. Take Care MARY and God Bless you1

Bronx singer and songwriter Mary J Blige has been a big name on the hip hop and R&B circuit for years now, set apart by her distinctly soulful style of singing. On stage Mary J Blige brought all her soul with her, wowing the audience with her stage presence and magnetism. Blige has collaborated with everyone from Faith Evans to Jay Z, and the confidence she brought on stage certainly reflected her star studded career. She brought the house down with a selection of her biggest hits from her tumultuous career and from her many hit albums. Appearing on stage dressed up in a flashy dress with her signature hoops and blonde bob, and with only a few backing dancers, Blige owned the stage from the moment she stepped on it. She opened with her famous ‘Family Affair’ to the crowd’s delight, and her set only got more and more lively as she moved between party R&B shakers and slower, more soulful ballads. She ended the set with ‘No More Drama’ and a sassy goodbye.

This is 1 artist I needed to see! Her music has brought me through some dark times! Mary J came out all guns blazing with and emotional, energetic and explosive perforfance from start to finish!

Each song left you wanting more and the energy in the crowd was on a whole new level. For such a mega star she was humble and organised and obviously committed to giving us all memories which will stay for ever! I thought Lauryn Hill would be the only artist to bring me to tears but by No More Drama even the guy sat next to us was in tears.

This lady is the Queen of MUSIC.

I wish I could post the video!!! I absolutely love MJB. She has been my fave since I was 12 or 13 and I'm about to be 37. Her shows are always amazing. She always makes sure to find ways to uplift the ladies. From beginning to end, I was up on my feet dancing and grooving to the music. Even when it was just the band playing. I will always wish the show was longer but regardless, I still loved it. Honestly, I wish I would have went both days. Until next time, MJB!!!

The show was awesome. MJB sang from her heart and soul. She even showcased her backup singers and her band which played with perfection. The stage design allowed her to get close to the audience and dip under stage and change outfits. She danced, testified and encouraged herself as well as the audience while covering most of her hits. I hope to see her again because once was not enough. I need more than an hour from MJB!

Excellent performance by both MJB and NAS. The mix of songs was near perfect. Me and my date thoroughly enjoyed the performance.

Negatives: started 32 minutes late and view obstructed by people coming down to capture video. Staff was too slow in addressing the last.

This was a near bucket list item, I would do it again.

EXCELLENT, EXCELLENT, EXCELLENT. My first time seeing her and I will definitely see her again!!!!

The fans sitting next to me had seen her multiple times.

I did not sit down the entire concert. Mary did not have an opening act, but I think she needs one so that the crowd does not think she is late coming on.

Mary J. Blige Brings “Good Morning Gorgeous Tour” Presented By Hologic In Partnership With The Black Promoters Collective with special guest Ella Mai to Little Caesars Arena Saturday, September 24

(DETROIT – June 13, 2022) – One of Time magazine’s icons listed in “The 100 Most Influential People of 2022” and the recipient of the 2022 Billboard ICON Award, the undisputed Queen of Hip Hop Soul, Mary J. Blige, announces her “Good Morning Gorgeous Tour” presented by Hologic in partnership with The Black Promoters Collective (BPC). Grammy® Award-winning and Oscar-nominated Blige will perform in 23 cities, including a visit to Little Caesars Arena on Saturday, September 24 at 8 p.m. Blige will be joined by special guest, platinum-selling, Grammy® Award-winning artist Ella Mai.

Tickets (starting at $64.50) go on sale Friday, June 17 at 10 a.m. at 313Presents.com and Ticketmaster.com .

“Mary J. Blige has been one of a select handful of artists at the top of our desired list to partner with since the initial construction of The BPC. Having her support in our mission so early in the process is a testament to the hard work we have put in to bring superior cultural experiences powered by black business to the masses. We firmly believe this is a match made in heaven and are honored to partner with the Queen,” states The BPC Co-Founder and President Shelby Joyner.

“We’re thrilled to continue our partnership with Mary J. Blige as the presenting sponsor for her Good Morning Gorgeous tour,” said Steve MacMillan, Hologic’s Chairman, President, and Chief Executive Officer. “As a global leader in women’s health, we’re committed to emphasizing the lifesaving importance of preventive screenings and the annual Well Woman exam, and Mary’s voice is a powerful way to reach millions of women.”

In addition to the previously stated accolades, the tour follows Blige’s early 2022 album release of Good Morning Gorgeous . The album was released leading into her energetic Super Bowl Halftime performance. The title track rose to #1 at R&B radio for nine weeks and the song became a viral backdrop for many expressing self-love, with over 40,000 users creating videos using the song on TikTok. A deluxe version was dropped just ahead of her wildly successful “Strength of a Woman” festival that took place last month in Atlanta.

About Mary J. Blige

Iconic Grammy® Award-winning singer, songwriter, Oscar-nominated actress, producer, and philanthropist Mary J. Blige is a figure of inspiration, transformation, and empowerment, making her one of the defining voices of the contemporary music era. With a track record of eight multi-platinum albums, nine Grammy Awards (plus a staggering 32 nominations), two Academy Award nominations, two Golden Globe nominations, and a SAG nomination, among many other accolades, Blige has cemented herself as a global superstar. Influenced at an early age by the music of Aretha Franklin, Chaka Khan, and Gladys Knight, Blige brought her own gritty, urban-rooted style – fusing hip-hop, soul, and honest, frank lyrics – to the forefront on her 1992 debut album What’s the 411? The multi-platinum set, executive produced by Sean “Diddy” Combs, quickly spun off several hits, including two No. R&B No. 1s: You Remind Me and Real Love . Blige helped redefine R&B and began forging a unique niche for herself on the more personal second album, 1994’s My Life . She is loved for her passionate, chart-topping hits like “Be Without You,” “No More Drama,” and “Family Affair,” all of which have made her a force in music. Over her career, Blige has released 15 studio albums (most recently Good Morning Gorgeous ) and has starred in films and television programs such as Mudbound, The Umbrella Academy, Power Book II: Ghost, Respect, and has recently released her own documentary, Mary J. Blige's My Life . This past February, she performed at the Pepsi Super Bowl LVI Halftime Show at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, CA, alongside Dr. Dre, Eminem, Snoop Dogg, and Kendrick Lamar. Blige has her own production company, Blue Butterfly, and recently launched her own festival, “Strength of a Woman Festival and Summit,” with Pepsi and in partnership with Live Nation Urban.

About Ella Mai

In 2018, Ella Mai’s first single, “Boo’d Up,” broke the record for the most weeks at No. 1 of any song by a woman on the “R&B/Hip Hop Billboard Airplay” chart. Her follow-up single “Trip” peaked at No. 11 on the Billboard Hot 100, and her album, Ella Mai , has almost six billion streams and is RIAA Certified Platinum. In addition to her chart-topping domination and success, Ella Mai has won a number of awards, including her first Grammy® for Best R&B Song, three Billboard Music Awards, including the coveted Top R&B Artist, three iHeartRadio awards including R&B Artist of the Year, three Soul Train Awards, and a BET Viewers Choice Award. After two years of touring the world, Ella released her new single, “Not Another Love Song,” off her forthcoming album. In her own words, the new single “is about falling in love but not wanting to admit it, so it's quite vulnerable but still has an edge to it.” If the adage is true and history always repeats itself, get ready for Ella Mai to dominate the music and cultural zeitgeist once again.

I n 2015, Mary J Blige performed at Glastonbury . She appeared on the Friday afternoon during a rainstorm so relentless that the TV coverage was frequently blurred by water on the camera lens, innocuously sandwiched between Alabama Shakes and a wheezy-sounding Motörhead on their last legs. It was a relatively lowly billing for an artist with 100m sales to their name, but the sight of an R&B artist on the Pyramid stage still carried the tang of novelty – it was the year someone got up a petition protesting Kanye West’s headlining appearance as “an insult to rock music” – and, moreover, Blige’s career was, by her standards at least, on its uppers.

The imperial phase that had begun with the release of her 1992 debut What’s the 411? had drawn to a close as the 00s turned into the 2010s. The previous year, she had released The London Sessions, a game attempt to pair her up with a series of UK artists: Disclosure, Sam Smith, Emeli Sandé, Naughty Boy. The results were OK, but the concept smacked of an artist casting around for a new direction – and the fact that the British artists got billing on the album cover seemed to say something about Blige’s diminished stature: it was being marketed as much on their presence as hers. It proved the lowest-selling album of her career.

Under the circumstances, you could have forgiven Blige for phoning it in. Instead, she unleashed a performance of scarcely believable power and ferocity. If you haven’t seen it, search out the BBC footage of her doing her 2001 single No More Drama (unbelievably, it isn’t available on any official platforms). Midway through, she fixes on the words “no more”, singing them again and again: screaming, howling, her voice dropping to a sob, then defiantly rising – apparently completely consumed by a song she must have performed hundreds of times. By its conclusion, Blige was crouched at the front of the stage being lashed by the rain. The crowd response was so loud and so long that Blige implored them to stop – “y’all are gonna make me cry”. For a moment it looked like she was going to break down. Instead, she tore into Family Affair, arguably her greatest single and a song entirely at odds with its predecessor.

Onstage at Glastonbury, Blige did not look much like an artist prepared to quietly accept diminished circumstances. And so it has proven. She begins 2023 with her most recent album, Good Morning Gorgeous, garlanded with six Grammy nominations, including record of the year and album of the year. Last year, her Super Bowl halftime performance succeeded in stealing the show from her co-stars Dr Dre, Eminem, Snoop Dogg, 50 Cent and Kendrick Lamar. Clad in an outfit emblazoned with 10,000 Swarovski crystals, she gave a reading of No More Drama only marginally less intense than at Glastonbury, the highlight of a show that subsequently won an Emmy. Her US tour grossed $34m. She launched her own festival in Atlanta, announced the arrival of her own talk show, The Wine Down, and won Billboard’s Icon award. Google revealed she was the year’s second-most searched music artist in the US, behind Maroon 5’s scandal-hit frontman Adam Levine. In truth, her career began picking up not long after Glastonbury – her 2017 album Strength of a Woman, was her highest-charting in eight years; the following year, her performance in the period drama Mudbound saw her nominated for an Oscar and a Golden Globe – but the sense of a dramatic increase in momentum over the last 12 months is hard to miss.

Perhaps we shouldn’t be surprised at Blige’s resurgence: she was a scrapper from the start. She fought her way out of a horrendous childhood in Yonkers’ Schlobohm Housing Projects – domestic violence, sexual abuse, an alcoholic, PTSD-stricken Vietnam vet father who left the family a few years after her birth – to release a debut album that literally changed the face of pop music. It’s not an exaggeration to say that we still live in a musical world that What’s the 411? helped create. Responding to what he called the “raspy, gutter, ghetto pain” of her voice, not to mention the toughness of her upbringing – Blige has a scar on her face that she has consistently refused to discuss – producer Sean Coombs set it to music explicitly influenced by hip-hop.

Mary J Blige performing in Chicago, September 1992.

The sound proved so pervasive, in time essentially consuming the entire genre of R&B, that it’s hard to imagine how striking it sounded on arrival, in an era where female-fronted R&B hits still tended to the soft-hued and poppy: Shanice’s I Love Your Smile, Vanessa Williams’ Save the Best ’Til Last or Mariah Carey’s Let It Go. It wasn’t just the forward-thinking sound that stuck out but the raw, gripping potency of Blige’s voice. For all her hip-hop-inspired image, it seemed to key into a much older soul tradition that the 80s had done its best to try and eradicate from the mainstream: a point Blige would underline some years later, on 1999’s Mary, a classicist soul-inspired album that pointed up the blues and gospel elements of her vocals.

While What’s the 411? sold 3m copies in the US alone, Blige became embroiled in a troubled relationship with singer Cedric “K-Ci” Hailey. A nadir of public humiliation was reached when she appeared live on The Word, and, having suggested the pair were engaged, was shown a video of Hailey on the same show loudly denying their engagement, although clearly worse was going on behind closed doors: Blige subsequently accused him of physical abuse. Her drinking escalated and she became addicted to cocaine. By the recording of her second album, My Life, she said she was suicidal. The musical results were astonishing: one of the landmark R&B albums of the decade, the largely self-written record offered an unsparing, wrenching document of a life in torment, “down and out, crying every day”, as she put it on the title track. It was often heavy emotional terrain – even the closing Be Happy is only cautiously optimistic at best – that introduced the notion of Blige as latter day R&B’s equivalent of a confessional singer-songwriter: her travails so public that Blige the person and Blige the artist seemed indivisible. Thereafter, she seldom shied away from a lyric that other artists might have rejected as too blunt: “I don’t have a lot of friends,” she sang on 1999’s Deep Inside. “Is it cash they see when they look at me?”

Harrowing or not, My Life was another hit, as was the album after it, and the album after that. Her quality control seemed to start wobbling around the turn of the millennium, although, initially at least, her commercial dominance did not – her 2006 single Be Without You spent 15 weeks at the top of Billboard’s Hot R&B Hip-Hop Songs chart. By the 2010s however, there were signs of trouble: an advert she made for Burger King was criticised as racist, there were issues with the IRS, her albums no longer went multi-platinum, the title of 2011’s My Life II suggested an artist casting back to their former glories.

So what’s behind her resurgence? The prosaic answer is that 2017’s Strength of a Woman and Good Morning Gorgeous are better albums than those that immediately proceeded them. Some of it is probably down to prevalent trend for 90s and early 00s nostalgia – the appearance of Kendrick Lamar notwithstanding, that was certainly what the Super Bowl half-time show was ultimately founded in, with its performances of Still Dre, In Da Club, California Love and Lose Yourself.

But there’s also a peculiar dichotomy to Blige. On one hand, she seems a very modern pop star. Current pop music prizes relatability, and Blige’s music was always relatable: “I’m every young girl in every hood,” as she once put it. It’s not so much that she’s continually approached by fans in the 2021 documentary My Life, it’s that every single one of them wants to tell her how her songs reflected their own experiences, whether divorce, abuse or coming out. We also live in an era where we expect artists to collaborate far beyond their genre, and Blige always did that, too: her voice was far more adaptable than the “gutter, ghetto pain” assessment suggested, and she seemed every bit as comfortable and imperious collaborating with U2, George Michael, Elton John or the Rolling Stones (footage of a 2012 live performance of Gimme Shelter with the latter offers a gripping glimpse of Blige in old-fashioned blues wailing mode) as with Method Man and Jay-Z.

But in another sense, she kicks against modern standards, not least the wearying desire for perfection, where artists are Auto-Tuned, choreographed, Photoshopped and media-trained to within an inch of their lives. It’s a climate that makes the Blige who was, as one writer put it, “opinionated to the point of abrasiveness”, who interrupted an interview with Veronica Webb to offer the model-turned-journalist outside for a fight (the latter happened after her management had sent her on a 17-week etiquette course), a strangely appealing, unvarnished character. Meanwhile, as David Dundas, who designed her Super Bowl outfit, noted, Blige is hard to choreograph onstage because “her movements are impulsive … some artists plan every step but Mary reacts in the moment”.

“There’s no time for pretty girl shit,” Blige once said of her stagecraft. “It’s time for ugly faces, sweat, spit flying – you got to get it going on.”

Whatever the reason, Blige’s resurgence is a hugely pleasing state of affairs: an abundantly talented, genuine musical pioneer having the full glare of the spotlight returned to them and clearly relishing it. “If you never seen me, or never met me, or you never went to any of my shows, you know exactly who I am after Super Bowl,” she said last year. “I’m super proud of myself. And I never thought I’d ever be able to say that in my lifetime.”

[WATCH] Ghostface Killah Explains Why He No Longer Performs “All That I Got Is You”

Mail

Wu-Tang Clan swordsman Ghostface Killah has decided that out of his myriad of timeless classics, there will be one that he will never perform on stage again.

“It just gets me sad,” Ghost said about his 1996 hit single from his Ironman LP “All That I Got Is You” featuring Mary J. Blige. “I don’t really perform that because it brings me back to a place where we was going through it. That record brings pain.”

In an exclusive interview with Big Daddy Kane on Hip Hop Wired’s “I Got Questions”, the Wally Champ says that the song digs up so much pain from his life that he’s chosen not to perform the song live. The song also features words of wisdom from Wu-Tang OG Popa Wu, who passed away in 2019.

Ghostface is still performing in front of sold-out crowds, such as the capacity crowd last week at NYC’s Apollo Theater for the Fat Joe and Friends concert, which featured other NYC notables such as Dipset, Peter Gunz, Remy Ma, Lil Kim, 50 Cent and The L.O.X.

Missy Elliot Announces Summer Tour With Busta Rhymes and Ciara, Coming to Oakland in July

Get your freak on when Missy Elliott comes to the Oakland Arena in July with Busta Rhymes, Ciara, and Timbaland, as tickets go on sale this week for Misdemeanor’s first tour in 20 years.

It’s stunning to learn that four-time Grammy winner Missy Elliott has never headlined a tour. She toured on the Lilith Fair (remember that?) in 1998, and after the success of the smash hits “Get Ur Freak On” and “Work It,” she co-headlined with Beyonce and Alicia Keys in 2004, and with Kelis and Talib Kweli on a second 2004 tour before stepping back from performing.

She also opened for Janet Jackson’s tour in 2015, the same year she appeared onstage for Katy Perry’s Super Bowl halftime show. Last year, she became the first Black female rapper inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

But the Chronicle picks up today’s news that Missy Elliott is headlining a tour this summer with Busta Rhymes, Ciara, and Timbaland , and the “Out of This World” tour comes to the Oakland Arena on July 9. ( Note: The tour announcement video below contains some mild profanity, though it is pretty funny.)

The Chronicle explains that there’s a “Live Nation presale,” which requires a Live Nation membership, this Thursday, April 11 at 10 am PT with the resale code RIFF. The general ticket sale is Friday, April 12 at 10 am PT on Ticketmaster.

And I guess we’re just resigned to accept that there are big corporate tie-ins to all the popular tours these days. Admittedly, I’m a Verizon customer, and I was sent the above push alert at 1 pm Monday, informing me of a “Verizon Up” presale for this tour that will begin Tuesday morning.

"This is an incredible time in my life as I am experiencing so many milestone 'firsts,'" Elliott said in a statement picked up by Variety . "Being the FIRST female hip-hop artist to be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and now going out on my FIRST headline tour. Fans have been asking me to tour forever but I wanted to wait until I felt the time was right because I knew if I was ever going to do it, I had to do it big, and I had to do it with family!"

Elliott has been on something of a hiatus in recent years, but played a small, one-off show last year at San Bernardino's Yaamava’ Theater, a clip of which is seen above (again, mild profanity). Variety ranked that show as one of the best concerts of 2023 , even though Elliott’s set was barely an hour long . That may have been a sneak preview of this tour, which starts July 4 in Vancouver, rolls through Oakland July 9, and covers 24 cities overall.

Mary J. Blige "Real Love" copyright infringement

Universal Music Group (UMG) has been hit with a copyright infringement lawsuit over Mary J. Blige ‘s 1992 classic, “Real Love.” Blige was not named in the lawsuit nor was she accused of any wrongdoing.

Aoki Lee Simmons' 65-Year-Old Boyfriend Said WHAT About Mary J. Blige?

Parness added, “Defendant has repeatedly refused to engage plaintiff in substantive negotiations to rectify the foregoing, let alone agreed to compensate Plaintiff for the past infringement or on an ongoing basis.”

However, Tuff City claims that UMG Recordings—a UMG subsidiary and owner of the “Real Love” master—reached an agreement regarding the uncleared sample, but UMG has not.

Over the past 15 years, Tuff City has sued regarding uncleared samples or interpolations in songs from JAY-Z to Frank Ocean and more. In 2014, a judge dismissed their case regarding JAY-Z’s “ Run This Town ” after determining that the sample in question was “barely perceptible.” In 2018, Tuff City was ordered to pay hundreds of thousands of dollars in legal fees to the Beastie Boys , who felt it was a case “clearly without merit.”

Tuff City first sued over an improper usage of “Impeach the President” back in 1991, claiming Marley Marl had illegally sampled the record on LL Cool J’s “ Around The Way Girl ” and “Six Minutes of Pleasure.”

Sundance 2024 Slate Includes Films Starring Normani, André Holland, Mary J. Blige, Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor And More

The American Society of Magical Negroes , Exhibiting Forgiveness, Rob Peace and more are part of the 2024 Sundance Film Festival .

A plethora of films featuring Black casts and/or Black filmmakers are featured this year for the 40th installment of Sundance, which will take place Jan. 18 in Park City and Salt Lake City, Utah. The festival will start with the Opening Night Gala: Celebrating 40 Years Presented by Chase Sapphire. The gala/fundraiser will benefit the work the Sundance Institute will do year-round.

Like it has been in the past few years, the Sundance Festival will also be available to online audiences via Sundance’s curated online selection.

Sundance’s executives, including Sundance Institute founder/president Robert Redford, have talked about what went into planning this year’s selection.

“From the first edition in 1985, Sundance Film Festival has aimed to provide a space to gather, celebrate, and engage with risk-taking artists that are committed to bringing their independent visions to audiences — the Festival remains true to that goal to this day,” said Redford. “It continues to evolve, but its legacy of showcasing bold work that starts necessary conversations continues with the 2024 program.”

“The Institute takes great pride in the role the Festival plays in advancing our mission to support artists creating audacious work,” added Joana Vicente, Sundance Institute CEO. “This year is especially significant as we look back on our history of showcasing stories that surprise and delight, spark empathy and reflection, and honor our shared humanity. We’re all thrilled for this opportunity to celebrate the power of storytelling as we gather in January to introduce captivating works from acclaimed filmmakers and discover more new voices.”

Sundance Director of Film Festival and Public Programming Eugene Hernandez also said, “Sundance’s passion and power shines through its programming. Curation is Sundance’s secret sauce and we’re energized by the range of films, stories, and artists we’ve watched and selected from around the world.”

“This Festival has had a vital history of first impressions: introductions to new talent, new friends, new worlds — our commitment to our artists and our audiences is fundamental to our work,” Hernandez continued. “Our programming team, lead by Kim Yutani, has curated 11 days of exciting new voices and stories for the many audiences we serve whether they’re joining us in Utah or experiencing the Festival offerings from afar. Sundance 2024 will be a special year for discovery and community.”

“While we don’t set out to program the Festival with a defined theme in mind, it became apparent this year that our slate’s biggest strength is how it showcases the vitality of independent storytelling,” added Kim Yutani, the festival’s programming director. “Our program is tightly curated and covers a broad cross section of form, perspective, and genre that we’re looking forward to sharing with audiences. These titles are inventive and they beautifully represent the kind of groundbreaking work we’ve sought to amplify at Sundance throughout our history.”

To that end, the 2024 program of films features 40 first-time feature filmmakers out of the full 101 list of directors featured. That means that 40 percent of the directors featured are first-time feature directors. Out of the 82 feature films featured, 11 were supported by the Sundance Institute in its production and development.

Rob Peace , written and directed by Chiwetel Ejiofor, stars Jay Will, Mary J. Blige, Ejiofor, Camila Cabello, Michael Kelly and Mare Winningham. Bernadette Peters, Sir Cameron Mackintosh and Lea Salonga bow at the curtain call during the press night performance of Stephen Sondheim's Old Friends at The Gielgud Theatre on October 3, 2023 in London, England.

Bernadette Peters and Lea Salonga will star in Stephen Sondheim’s O ld Friends at Center Theatre Group in Los Angeles before landing on Broadway next March.

The musical revue of Sondheim’s songs, devised by Cameron Mackintosh, comes to North America after a 16-week run starting last September at London’s Gielgud Theatre. Peters and Salonga also starred in that run.

Sondheim came up with the idea of doing a third revue during lockdown, according to Mackintosh. Work began on the show, but Sondheim died in November 2021. Mackintosh and McKenzie continued work on the revue in order to make it a “farewell show” to celebrate Sondheim’s work.

“It was a sensational success that sold out within hours, screened simultaneously at the nearby Prince Edward Theatre, and was subsequently broadcast on TV on the BBC. The material held together so brilliantly that I decided to press ahead and give Old Friends the full stage life Steve and I had always planned,” Mackintosh said.

Additional casting and the creative team Stephen Sondheim’s Old Friends will be announced at a later date.

In the 2024-2025 season, Manhattan Theatre Club will also bring the Broadway premiere of Eureka Day , a biting comedy about an outbreak of mumps at a private school, written by Jonathan Spector and directed by Anna D. Shapiro and the world premiere Off-Broadway production of Vladimir , about a journalist who finds herself in danger after covering the Russian president, written by Erika Sheffer and directed by Daniel Sullivan.

Mary Jane, starring Rachel McAdams, is currently playing the Samuel J. Friedman Theatre through June 2. The theater will be closed from July 2024 to October 2024 for upgrades to its lighting, HVAC, fire and security systems.
