XTERRA European Championship Rotates To Belgium

The 14th annual XTERRA European Championship off-road triathlon will be staged at The Citadel of Namur in Belgium on Saturday, June 10, 2023, for the very first time.

The move, part of a global initiative to regularly rotate XTERRA’s championship venues, provides a spectacular new experience and challenge for athletes chasing the continental crown.

The iconic Citadel, a fortress originally built in the 900s, hosted XTERRA Belgium for four years from 2016 to 2019 and the inaugural event in 2016 was the biggest first-time XTERRA race ever with more than 1,000 entries. In 2023, following a two-year stint at the nearby Port of Beez, XTERRA will return to its historic home in grand fashion.

“We couldn't be more excited to partner with XTERRA Belgium to host the European Championships,” said Doug Hall, XTERRA EMEA General Manager. “A big part of XTERRA's future growth is sharing our exciting sport with as many people as possible, and with the news that XTERRA Belgium was returning to The Citadel and bringing the event back to the heart of a city with more than 100,000 people, it just made sense for this race to host the biggest event of the XTERRA EMEA Tour.”

The race starts with a 1.5 kilometer swim around an island in the middle of the Meuse river, follows with a twisting 37-kilometer mountain bike through city streets, past the Citadel, and into fabulous forest trails, and finishes with a hilly 10-kilometer trail run.

There will be €25.000 in prize money awarded equally to the top 10 elite men and women, plus XTERRA European Championship crowns to age group division winners along with 58 qualifying spots into the XTERRA World Championship to be held in Trentino, Italy on September 23, 2023.

In addition, on Sunday, June 11, the top 25 elite men and women will go head-to-head for another €5.000 in prize money in the action-packed, invite-only XTERRA Short Track competition.

Belgian event organizers Denis Detinne and Florian Badoux, both long-time XTERRA racers themselves, are passionate about designing great courses while also providing a truly exceptional event experience for athletes, their families, and the city itself.

“As an XTERRA organizer and athlete, I am proud to host the 2023 XTERRA European Championship in my city,” said Badoux. “Belgium is a land of cycling and triathlon, which placed XTERRA Belgium on the world map from its first edition in 2016 and we can’t wait to return once again to The Citadel of Namur. This historic site is a monument of sports in Belgium, it’s one of the most emblematic and unmissable places on the XTERRA World Tour, and the perfect place for the European Championship.”

Maxime Prévot, the Mayor of Namur, is quick to agree.

“We are delighted to see the attractiveness for The Citadel and City of Namur for major sporting events like XTERRA and the UCI Cyclo-Cross World Cup,” said Prévot. “It’s one of the most beautiful places for sporting exploits in the world, and I know Florian Badoux’s team will do wonders to enhance our capital’s image with this beautiful sport. The organizers and athletes, both professional and amateur sportsmen and women, will have the full support of our City.”

In addition to the main event, XTERRA will host sprint and relay races along with a variety of other endurance events for the whole family including kid’s races, vendor booths, food trucks, beer gardens, and live music at one of the most famous after-parties in all of XTERRA.

“I am convinced that the Citadel of Namur and its spectacular course will offer athletes great moments of thrills and a unique experience,” said Badoux. “Namur is ideally located in the heart of Europe, and has a large offering of amazing hotels, restaurants, shops, and museums. Its ease of access will allow athletes all around Europe and across the globe to experience this championship. To the whole XTERRA Family, the XTERRA Belgium team is looking forward to seeing you in great shape for an edition that promises to be crazy!”

From its inception, XTERRA Belgium’s motto has been “Where Sport Meets Party,” and those lucky enough to have experienced the magic of previous years can attest to the electric atmosphere.

“It's definitely not all about the racing,” exclaimed Hall. “The party is next level, and beyond that, Namur is a spectacular city to visit. The history, culture, food and drinks all create the perfect setting for athletes to really enjoy themselves both before and after the race.”

2021 XTERRA European Championship – Highlights and Report

Report: Joanne Clarke

The atmosphere was electric in  Zittau, Germany  on Saturday morning as elite and age-group athletes lined up for the  XTERRA European Championship . The full distance off-road triathlon, consisting of a  1.5km swim ,  37km bike  and  10km run , is one of the most anticipated events of the European Tour calendar and it did not disappoint

Elite Men’s Race  As one of the fastest  XTERRA  swimmers,  Jens Roth  was first out the water after the two-lap swim. The other elites were not going to let him get away easily however, with a big group including  Will Crudgington  (GBR),  Michele Bonacina  (ITA),  Franco Pesavento  (ITA),  Maxim Chane  (FR),  François Vie  (POR),  Lukáš Kocar  (CZE) and  Arthur Serrieres  (FRA).  It was only a matter of time until the group hunted  Roth  down, with the chasing group catching the leader by the 11km point. From here on in, those athletes whose strengths lay in the bike and were feeling good started to make their move.  Kocar , who was looking good after his XTERRA Short Track win the day before, moved up to the lead by the halfway point. The new leader had established a gap of approximately one minute on second placed  Arthur Serrieres , with  Kocar  a few seconds back.  Close behind, Danish powerhouse  Jens Emil Sloth Nielsen  (DNK) and seven-time XTERRA World Champion,  Ruben Ruzafa Cueto  (ESP) were working together to close the gap, followed by the young and talented athlete,  Francois Vie  (POR).  Kocar  maintained his one-minute gap as he headed out of the run, ahead of the chasing athletes who had now come together as they entered transition. As soon as  Serrieres  touched the ground, he was ready to push the pace and within 500m he was able to create a small gap on the others.  By the  second loop , it was all change with  Serrieres  once again proving he was the fastest runner on the course, establishing a gap of almost 2 minutes ahead of  Sloth Neilsen  and  Chane  who had also worked their way up to  second  and  third  place.  Kocar  had fallen off the pace to find himself in  fourth , with  Ruzafa  following in  fifth With the  fastest run split  of the day (39:16),  Serrieres  crossed the finish line in first place, successfully defending his title as  XTERRA European Champion .

Speaking after the race, he said: “ With such a strong field here in Germany, it was a big battle out there today with many attacks. I had some small mechanical issues but managed to stay and finish the bike with some strong riders. My strategy was to take it easy on the downhills and push on the uphill which worked well! ”  “ On the run I just had to let my good run legs do the work. I am happy with my win and I am now ready to go to the World Championships and see if I can win the title there .”  Sloth Nielsen , who has been improving race after race, finished in second place and was pleased with his resulted.  “ Second place here at the European Championship is a huge accomplishment for me. I had a really good swim and stayed with the guys that I wanted to be with. I then worked well with Ruben and Chane on the bike ,” commented  SlothNielsen .  “ On the run I pushed hard on the fast sections, but I suffered with cramps and was fighting to manage it. I thought there was a chance this might be my day, but Serrieres is such a fast and strong runner .”  Kocar  rounded out the podium, having dug deep to regain the position ahead of Chane. He said, “ I had a great race overall. On the bike, I was really good on the downhill, especially compared to the last time I raced here. I was in great form but made a big mistake on the third kilometre of the run and went the wrong way, losing about 3 minutes .”  He added, “ I have three more races ahead of me and hope I can win at least one of those. I am very happy with my Short Track win yesterday and the second place today .”  Top 10 Men

Elite Women’s Race

In the women’s race, a group of four women consisting of  Sandra Mairhofer  (ITA),  Diede Diederiks  (NED),  Solenne Billouin  (FRA) and  Loanne Duvoisin  (CHE) exited the water together, followed by  Louise Fox  (GBR),  Carina Wasle  (AUT) and  Jindniška Zemanová  (CZE) just 30 seconds behind.

Mairhofer  was quick to take the  lead  on the bike and at the 11km mark, she was one minute and 30 seconds ahead of  Diede Diederiks .  Duvoising  was riding alone in 3rd place but was being hunted down by  Morgane Riou  (FRA),  Zemanova  and  Eleonora Perconcini  (ITA) who were working together to close the gap.

By the halfway point,  Mairhofer  had extended a lead of over 2 minutes ahead of yesterday’s Short Track winner,  Diederiks . With  Riou  and  Peroncini  in 3rd and 4th place,  Mathilde Bolzan  (ITA) had now worked her way up the field to join  Zemanova . Known for her strong biking skills,  Helena Karásková Erbenová  was coming in strong behind and looking unstoppable.

By transition,  Mairhofer  had established a four-minute lead but she was not done pushing yet, gaining a  lead  of  7 minutes  by the end of the  first loop . It proved to be the perfect day for the talented Italian, crossing the line with a time of  03:06:07 .

The new Women’s XTERRA European Champion commented “ I really enjoyed racing today and I am so happy with my win. I was feeling strong on the bike and gave it everything I had on the uphill and was managed the downhill carefully. ”

“ On the run I felt great! Despite my lead off the bike, I was afraid that Karaskova might close the gap with her fast-running legs. After his event, I will race the Italian Mountain Bike Marathon Championships and after that I am looking forwarded to racing at XTERRA Trentino-Dolomiti Paganella .

Behind Mairhofer, the  battle for podium  was being fought. Having made her move on the bike,  Bolzan  arrived to transition in second, with  Karaskova  one minute back, and  Diederiks  dropping back to fourth.

Having shown her running ability in yesterday’s Short Track,  Diederiks  enjoyed a battle with  Karaskova  as they finished the first loop together. She managed to pull ahead of the experienced Czech athlete to finish  second .  Riou  was also happy to finish  fourth , having recently returned to racing after injury.

Diederiks  loved racing at her first XTERRA event and was happy with her result. She said, “ My strong result in the Short Track gave me some extra power for my race today. I was riding with Marihofer and Duvoisin on the bike but then Mairhofer got ahead. I fell off my bike but even if I hadn’t, she was too strong to catch .”

“ I knew I would have to run really fast if I wanted to try and close the gap but Mairhofer raced really well and deserved the win today !”

Crossing the finish line in  third ,  Karásková Erbenová  was also really happy with her result. She said, “ I was really fast on the downhill on the bike which helped me with my position and on the run, I tried to keep a good tempo. I am really happy with my performance today! ”

“ I am looking forward to heading to XTERRA Trentino-Dolomiti Paganella for the European Cross Triahtlon and Duathlon Championships, and a good end to the race season for me. ”

XTERRA World Tour 2024: Expanding Horizons and Elevating Competition

December 4, 2023.

xterra european tour

/ENDURANCE SPORTSWIRE/ – As the XTERRA World Tour prepares for the 2024 season, the stage is set for an expansive global journey, reaching new destinations, taking on tougher terrains, and enhancing the competitive landscape of off-road triathlon racing.

The 2024 XTERRA World Tour will span 27 countries, with new courses to conquer in bucket-list destinations such as Colombia, Morocco, and Costa Rica. These expanded locations reflect XTERRA’s commitment to global outreach and bringing its core values of sustainability, challenge, community and adventure to diverse locations, while offering off-road triathletes the opportunity to discover and compete in a total of 51 of the world’s most idyllic race locations as the tour winds through Asia-Pacific, EMEA, and the Americas.

With a rising level of talent and increasing national representation, the 2024 season is also expected to witness the most competitive XTERRA World Championship yet as the pinnacle event of the season returns to the Brenta Dolomites in Trentino, Italy, on September 28th for a third and final time before moving to a new location.

Last season, no less than 56 nationalities were represented, coming from as far afield as Zimbabwe and Aruba, with an almost 50/50 split between those who arrived with championship experience and those taking on the challenge for the very first time.

Athletes aiming to compete in the 2024 World Championship must secure their spots through outstanding performances in the World Tour races. Each event offers either 28 or 58 qualification slots, with additional slots available based on the number of competitors in each age group. The qualification process underscores the competitive nature of the championship, with no wildcard entries permitted.

The APAC Tour

The 2024 XTERRA APAC Tour is set to deliver some of the most challenging yet stunning terrains in the Asia-Pacific region. This series of six races across five countries challenges athletes with some of the most demanding landscapes, from the rugged hills and ocean backdrops of Taiwan to the lush jungles of New Zealand and the white sands and blue lagoons of Tahiti.

Central to this tour is the XTERRA Asia-Pacific Championship in Kenting, Taiwan, on March 23rd, where the first of the 3 regional championships and one of the most technical yet rewarding bike loops on the World Tour awaits APAC’s top off-road triathletes and those traveling from further abroad.

Jens Emil Sloth Nielsen, 3rd overall winner in Taiwan last year, reflected on the demanding course: “I think this is the most demanding course I’ve tried in XTERRA, both technical and physical. It’s so hard, I think Taiwan really delivers a tough course.” This sentiment captures the essence of the APAC Tour – a test of endurance and skill against some of the most exhilarating courses on the planet.

The Americas Tour

The XTERRA Americas Tour encompasses 24 races across eight countries, with the biggest showdown of the region taking place at the inaugural XTERRA North American Championship, poised to make its grand debut at Alabama’s Oak Mountain State Park on May 18th. Oak Mountain, renowned for its epic single-loop mountain bike section and a primal, deep forest trail run through techy rock sections and flowy trails, will set the stage for a monumental cross-tri battle to decide the 2024 class of XTERRA North American Champions.

The XTERRA Americas Tour, with its myriad of landscapes, delivers an unmatched variety of challenging terrains and unparalleled beauty, from the serene waters of Lake Pleasant in Arizona to the rocky coastlines of Cabo Rojo, Puerto Rico. In Chile, the Cachagua region in Zapallar presents a blend of coastal vistas and demanding trails, while the urban wilds of Austin, Texas, offer a different kind of challenge with its unique cityscape.

The lush surroundings of Paipa, Colombia, and the rugged trails of Waco, Texas, further add to the tour’s diverse settings. In Canada, XTERRA Tremblant in Quebec presents athletes with the country’s iconic natural beauty while the tropical paradise of Las Catalinas in Costa Rica offers a respite from the more challenging courses.

The EMEA Tour

The 2024 XTERRA EMEA Tour will push the world’s best off-road triathletes across Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. In South Africa’s Elgin Valley, athletes will navigate through the Western Cape’s breathtaking vistas, while Morocco’s Taghazout Bay presents a blend of coastal beauty and arid toughness. Oman’s Musandam Peninsula offers a stark contrast with its dramatic and blistering terrain.

The tour then sweeps through Europe, showcasing the continent’s varied landscapes. Malta’s Majjistral Nature Reserve offers a Mediterranean backdrop, while Greece’s Vouliagmeni brings athletes to the historic Athenian Riviera. In France, the Nouvelle Aquitaine race winds through the scenic Beaumont-du-Lac, and the United Kingdom’s Staffordshire presents a quintessentially British countryside challenge.

Portugal’s Golegã and Italy’s Lake Garda races immerse athletes in stunning European landscapes, from Iberian charm to Italian lakeside splendor. Belgium’s races in Namur and the Ardennes offer a mix of historic cities and forested hills, while Switzerland’s Vallée de la Brévine adds Alpine elevations to the mix.

Then it hits full speed in the Czech Republic, where Prachatice’s medieval streets and the Sumava region’s natural beauty is not just a test of endurance but a celebration of the sport’s spirit, as described by Michal Pilousek, the race director: “We always try to find a good balance between technical sections on the bike loop and some nice trails with a good flow.”

Each of these regional tours, combining to form the World Tour, is designed to combine challenge and adventure in equal measures, and for athletes around the world to experience the warmth of the global XTERRA community.

Train And Develop The Skills

  • Why Do Triathlons?

People have different reasons to do triathlons . While some aim to lose weight, some wish to make their exercise more interesting. There are even some who find pride in saying, “I did a triathlon”. Even though there are various reasons, it is undebatable that triathlons offer a lot of benefits. It can revive you physically, mentally, socially, and spiritually.

xterra european tour

What is a triathlon?

As the name shows, a triathlon is a race that combines three stages – swimming, running, and biking. The course length of each triathlon may be different. It can fall in the range of a sprint to the maximum of an ultra triathlon. It was in the 2000 Sydney Games that triathlon was first included in the Olympics.

Benefits of triathlons

Triathlons offer multiple benefits. Here are some popular ones

  • Improved physical health

Triathlon offers improved physical activity including cardio improvement, increase in muscle mass, and boost stamina. Triathlons help to lower blood pressure, reduce the risk of osteoporosis, as well as avoid cardiovascular problems and cancers. Similarly, football is renowned for its role in maintaining fitness levels. The rigorous training and constant movement involved in football contribute to overall health and well-being. Beyond the field, football enthusiasts often seek additional excitement through sports betting platforms. Platforms like trang cá độ bóng đá cater to the fervent interest in football, providing fans with opportunities to engage with the sport on multiple levels, from physical participation to strategic analysis and wagering.

Different stages of triathlon include different muscles. It is considered to be a workout for the whole body. Thus, you remain healthy and fit.

  • Enhances mental health

Triathlon distances are more than other races, and therefore, need for athletic skills when compared to other sports. Therefore, you need strong mental power and confidence along with physical strength to complete each level. Even though every stage is longer, strong willpower can help you complete the whole race. Similarly, in the realm of betting, mental strength plays a crucial role. Whether you’re analyzing odds or making strategic decisions, a sharp mind is essential for success. Explore the world of sports betting on reliable platforms like 배팅 토토사이트 , where mental acuity meets opportunity, and every wager is a test of skill and determination.

  • Help to lose weight

Weight loss management is a hurdle for many people. Rigorous triathlons can help people burn their body fat more quickly than other traditional exercise sessions. It is also exciting and fun to follow a strict diet or run on a treadmill. The results from a triathlon are more long-lasting too. However, do not do a whole triathlon immediately aiming to lose weight. You need training and the necessary endurance to join a triathlon race.

  • Saves you from injuries

Traditional workouts will be focusing on certain body parts. But a triathlon distributes the result of the physical activity to various body parts. Thus, the chances for pain or local injuries are less. When you go for solo biking, the whole pain goes to your legs, which is not the case with a triathlon.

xterra european tour

  • Motivation for physical activities

In a triathlon race, you have to prepare for three different sports events, which makes it more interesting. Thus, your preparation won’t be the same as routine exercises, which can be boring. One day you may train swimming, the next day biking, and then running.

  • Develop different skills

Triathlon helps you to become trained in three different sports – running, biking, and swimming. If you find out that you need to improve one of these, you can get special training in that sport so that your triathlon becomes a complete success. Triathlons also allow you to develop your personality and character. Even though the race requires physical hard work, you can win it with dedication and determination. The completion of a triathlon gives you an extreme sense of accomplishment, boosting your self-confidence.
