Visiting the sky garden, london: tips from a local expert.

My hometown of London is a famously expensive city to visit. However, not all of  London’s landmarks come with a hefty price tag attached. You just have to do your homework.

You can soak up 360-degree views of the capital from the Sky Garden without handing over a single pound. It’s one of my favourite London viewpoints.

Get the lowdown on how to get tickets and what to expect with my essential tips for visiting the Sky Garden, London.

Introducing the Sky Garden, London

The  Sky Garden is a lush leafy sanctuary wrapped around the top of the 20 Fenchurch Street building, commonly known as the Walkie Talkie.

Designed in 2004 by world-renowned Uruguayan architect Rafael Viñoly, 20 Fenchurch St. incorporates enormous sheets of glass, which grow larger as the eye travels upwards. Looking like a massive shiny sanitary towel, it rises to a height of 160 meters above street level.

Due to its death-ray-wielding ability, during its construction, it was famously dubbed the “Walkie-Scorchie” or “Fryscraper”. Its glass and steel exterior acted as a massive concave mirror during the few hours of the day when the sun shined directly into the building, causing it to melt holes in nearby parked vehicles.

Top Tips for Visiting the Sky Garden, London

1. book your ticket in advance.

Although the Sky Garden is free to visit, you need to book a ticket in advance. As visitor numbers are limited and this garden in the sky is not exactly a well-kept secret, you need to be quick off the mark.

Sky Garden tickets are released weekly – the website will tell you the next release date – and to guarantee a decent slot, you need to book as early as possible. Book timed tickets on the Sky Garden’s website up to three weeks in advance of your visit.

In theory, admission slots are for one hour only but I didn’t see staff try to turf out those who may have overstayed their welcome.

The Sky Garden is open daily for ticket holders from 10 am until 6 pm on weekdays, and from 11 am to 9 pm on weekends. Its bars and restaurants have extended opening hours.

2. You may be able to visit the Sky Garden without booking A FREE ENTRY SLOT

That said, it is not impossible to visit Sky Garden without booking. Here are your options:

Limited spots are available, subject to availability. It’s a bit of a gamble but can pay off.

In 2024, this costs £9.50 and includes a hot drink. Subject to availability.

This costs £18.25 (over 18s only) and includes entertainment from the resident DJ or live band and a glass of Champagne. Subject to availability.

people walking down curved steps in sky garden with lush ferns and curved glass window and ceiling

You do not need to book a free public ticket if you are visiting one of the Sky Garden’s eating or drinking venues. Just allow yourself time to check out those views before taking your table.

You can book online up to 60 days in advance for the Sky Garden’s restaurants and bars. Walk-ins are welcome subject to availability.

If you are dining in a restaurant, you don’t need to join the entry queue. Instead, join the separate queue to the right of reception.

When booking a table at the Sky Garden bar, you will be allocated to Sky Pod or City Garden Bar based on availability.

  • Sky Pod Bar – relaxed indoor bar serving a small range of all-day dining options, as well as evening cocktails
  • City Garden Bar – cocktails with a view at this east-facing bar Fenchurch Terrace – elegant space on level 37
  • Fenchurch Restaurant – serving contemporary British cuisine on the 37th Floor
  • Darwin Brasserie – overlooking the Thames on Level 36, this all-day dining location serves weekend breakfast and brunch
  • Larch Restaurant – classic Italian dishes made with seasonal British produce

3. VISIT LATE AFTERNOON IF POSSIBLE

Whatever time of day you visit the Sky Garden, London, you can’t go far wrong.

Thanks to tight regulation of visitor numbers, there are no busy or quiet times of day as such. And as tickets are usually in high demand, you may need to accept the available time slot.   That said, if I had a choice, I would visit late afternoon to watch the sun set over London and linger to see the city lit up (friends who have had dinner there report that the views are spectacular). As ticket holders are shooed out by 6 pm, this option is only available during the shorter days of winter (or if you decide to dine here).

4. don’t plan on taking sensational photos

The Sky Garden may offer some of the best views of London but these are tricky to capture on your camera. Tripods are not allowed.

Reflections in the building’s windows can impair the quality of photographs, particularly if the direction of the sun is against you. Hold your lens as close to the glass as possible to minimise glare and reflections (phones are better for this than cameras).

5. Beware of inclement weather

You need to head to the Sky Garden’s outdoor terrace for the best views of London.

However, London’s weather is notoriously fickle and this terrace is open to the elements. The building’s security reserves the right to close the terrace due to inclement weather conditions without warning.

My Visit to the Sky Garden

I visited the Sky Garden on a sunny day in September. Although it had been on my radar for some time, I was never organised enough to book a ticket and when one became available I jumped at the chance to visit.

For me, the main reason for visiting the Sky Garden was to have London laid out like a model town in front of me. Its garden was a welcome bonus.

After passing through an airport-style security check, I took the lift to the 35 th  Floor. My first view was looking south over the river with The Shard taking centre stage in all of its splintered splendour.

aerial view of river thames with pointy shard building

To the north, the City’s skyscrapers – The Gherkin, the Cheesegrater and NatWest Tower dutifully lined up like chess pieces in a row.

kyscrapers through the curved windows of sky garden london framed by palm trees

Looking to the east, there was the Tower of London and Tower Bridge, one of London’s most iconic bridges . They resembled toy town models, laid out in brilliant clarity.

river thames and tower bridge

Beyond this, the skyscrapers of Canary Wharf stood in a solemn procession. To the west, it was easy to pick out Christopher Wren’s dome of St. Paul’s Cathedral with the BT Tower in the distance.

But the Sky Garden is more than just a viewpoint. The clue is in “Garden”.

The greenery in the Sky Garden itself was been designed by award-winning landscape architects Gillespies and installed by Willerby Landscapes. Individual plants in the terraces are largely Mediterranean and South African species, chosen to work in harmony with the space and light.

When I visited, there were majestic palm fronds, African lilies and birds of paradise (the non-feathered variety) alongside fragrant herbs such as French Lavender and Rosemary.

How to Get There

The visitor entrance to the Sky Garden is on Philpot Lane, at the southwest corner of 20 Fenchurch Street (look for signs at the ground level of the building).   The closest tube station is Monument, just a few minutes walk from the Walkie-Talkie building. Bank, Tower Hill, Tower Gate, Aldgate and Mansion House stations are all within a 10-minute walk.   If you are arriving by rail, the closest mainline stations are London Fenchurch Street, Cannon Street and London Bridge.   Bus number 40 stops close by.

The Sky Garden vs. the View From The Shard

Soaring to a height of almost 310 meters above the River Thames, The Shard is the tallest building in the United Kingdom (and the seventh-tallest in Europe). It is home to The View from The Shard, the highest viewing platform in London.

Like the Sky Garden, The View From The Shard offers 360-degree views of London. But due to its higher vantage point, it has an edge when it comes to those killer views of London.

aerial view from the shard of the river thames and 4 of its bridges

The very large fly in the ointment is that these views are usually attached to a hefty ticket price.

Although you need to book ahead, entrance to the Sky Garden is free. And with its lush vegetation, it is also more than just a viewing platform with a few bars and restaurants.

In an ideal world, I recommend visiting both The Shard and the Sky Garden. But if you want to save money and can book in advance, I’d plump for the Sky Garden.

London Sky Garden Visitors Guide – Everything You Need To Know

Where is the Sky Garden? At the very top of the walkietalkie, 20 Fenchurch Street, London

A Sky Garden Visitors Guide For Your London Bucket List

London’s answer to Jack And The Beanstalk, the garden in the sky has been attracting those in the know since 2015. If you haven’t already visited the London Sky Garden then what are you waiting for?

It was always going to be a hit in my books since it’s an intoxicating cocktail of some of my favourite things – a great view, a tropical paradise and an opportunity for a glass of fizz with a spot of people-watching!

What To Expect From The London Sky Garden

Set over 3 levels, but in one GIGANTIC glass room, the Sky Garden has 360-degree views over all of London. But the best view of all is from an outdoor observation deck which runs parallel with the Thames and gives you an epic birdseye vista of Tower Bridge and a pretty decent close-up of The Shard.

The actual gardens have that heavy scent of the Tropics and are blooming with flowers you’d expect in such climates – bird of paradise, lilies, red-hot pokers, that kind of thing. Bright pops of colour just begging to be photographed.

View of London Bridge from the London Skygarden terrace

But if you have to photograph anything, save your film for later… Here’s my suggestion; grab yourself a glass of bubbly from the Sky Garden bar and settle down at a table by the window. Not only will you have the best views across the river but you have front-row seats to everyone coming to pose for their own Sky Garden photos – honestly, it can be comedy-gold! And, since many are here to have a meal in the Sky Garden restaurant, they’re all dressed in their Sunday best and ready to impress! (There is no Sky Garden dress code for the open garden area by the way)

So if you’re still wondering ‘is the Sky Garden worth visiting’, it’s a resounding YESS!

Which Building Is The London Sky Garden In?

So where is the Sky Garden? Known to most as The Walkie Talkie, you will find this wonderful garden in the sky at 20 Fenchurch Street in the Financial District of London. You can’t miss it – it grows upwards and outwards from the pavements below and looks startingly top-heavy. I think it’s quite fitting they designed a roof garden at its pinnacle since nature almost always looks overloaded at its boughs.

You can get to the London Sky Garden via the underground and the nearest tube stops are Bank and Monument. These stations are on the Central, Northern, Waterloo & City, Circle and District lines.

the WalkieTalkie in London - home of the Sky Garden

How Much Does The Sky Garden Cost?

It’s free!!! I mean, they could genuinely be charging an arm and a leg to get in here but the kindhearted multi-billionaires who own 20 Fenchurch Street have decided to forget about an entrance fee and have instead opened up their rooftop to plebs and socialites alike.

Until I visited I was under the impression you had to have a drink or eat at the restaurant, but not at all – you could come and not partake. Find yourself a quiet seat amongst the shrubbery and sit awhile.

In theory, your time slot for the skygarden is supposed to expire after an hour but there is no way for them to know how long you have been there.

Can You Get Into The London Sky Garden Without Booking?

If you’re wondering can you just walk into the Sky Garden, the official answer is no. HOWEVER… each time I have been I have stopped by on the off-chance and the doormen at the foot of the building can advise if it’s a busy time or not and whether you can book on the spot. We have always got in without booking days or weeks in advance.

You do need to go to their website to book. One time we arrived at 5 pm and could only get a slot for 6 pm but they still let us in. I guess they have a better idea of footfall than their online bots do! That said, spaces are limited so peak days and times are worth booking ahead of time. You can book up to 3 weeks ahead and 7 pm is their busiest time.

Children are allowed in the Sky Garden but see their website for specific details.

The Sky Garden London - secret spots to just sit and take in the beauty

Sky Garden London – Opening Hours

The terrace is open daily from 10am-6pm weekdays, 11am-6pm at weekends. The weather may mean the terrace has to close at other times too.

7pm is peak time but if you can hang on a bit, 9pm til closing is a lovely time to visit, especially in the summer months so you can see the sun set. Or if you are an early riser, the best time to visit the Sky Garden for you might be first thing in the morning – you can get a coffee in the Sky Garden to enjoy with a view as the city springs to life.

We have usually visited around 5pm, pre-dinner, and it is relatively busy but not nose to ear.

Tip : Google maps can help you decide the best time to visit Sky Garden London on the day; scroll down to Popular Times to see when the quietest sections of that day of the week are.

Sky Garden Restaurants…

CAN YOU EAT AT SKY GARDEN, LONDON?

Yes. You have a choice of two restaurants in the roof-space of the London walkie-talkie… Darwin Brasserie and Fenchurch restaurant. The latter is definitely the posher of the two Sky Garden restaurants and has much more assertive opinions on fashion sense – check out their website for the dress code. Both have great views of London but something tells me you haven’t booked a table to see St Pauls cranium.

OUR TOP TIP…

If you are thinking of planning a night out in London, in our opinion a visit to the Sky Garden bar starts the night off properly! This is a great area for eating and drinking if you only know where to go. You’re a stones throw from the aesthetic beauty, The Royal Exchange , but also the bustling area of Leadenhall Market where good London pubs are ten-a-penny. And, if you want a top restaurant recommendation we can’t praise Searcy’s at the Gherkin enough.

In fact, we totally love this area of London – off the beaten track a little bit but so much to see and do. Many places on our London Secret Places post crop up in this area and one of our favourite London hotels isn’t too far away. (see below)

Where To Stay Near The Sky Garden, London

We can personally recommend two great hotels in this area of London – The Zetter, Clerkenwell and the Leman Locke Apartments.

The Zetter is really special. Bordering on expensive but worth every penny, it’s a lovely hotel to book for a special occasion. And, be sure to book yourself with a balcony! We wrote about our experience here .

Alternatively, we often choose an apartment when visiting London so that you can cut down on costs of eating out and you generally get a larger area to lounge in after a long day. The Leman Locke Apartments have everything you need kitchen-wise (including a washing machine!) and they’re so bright and airy. It’s a great location for some of London’s main attractions, like The Tower and St Paul’s , and not too far from the bustling area of Brick Lane and Spitalfields .

I visited the sky garden on a recent trip to London and was amazed, surprised and delighted in equal measure. It is amazing to see the landscape from that vantage point. And I met the loveliest smiling lady who managed the queue. I would love to be there to watch the sunset.

So glad you liked it as much as us!

One of the best things about London is the amount of free activities there are. It has a (well-earned) reputation for being an expensive city to visit or live in but, you can experience a lot of the UK’s bustling capital without actually spending a penny! Surprisingly, it’s also a great city to visit on a budget.

One of the best free things to do in London is visit one of the numerous free viewpoints. Forget spending over £30 to go up The Shard , there are plenty that offer practically the same view (or even better as you can see The Shard from other viewpoints) for free.

About the Sky Garden London

The Sky Garden opened in 2015 in the building commonly nicknamed the “Walkie-Talkie Building” due to its distinctive shape.

It’s one of the most popular free viewpoints in London and as well as offering great views of the city, it’s a lovely spot to sit amongst the foliage and soak up the atmosphere which, despite being constantly busy, can feel rather peaceful.

On arrival at the Sky Garden, you’ll have your ticket scanned, go through an airport-style security check and have your bags searched. The checks themselves are quick but there may be a queue depending on how many people are booked on your time slot.

After the checks, you’ll be directed to the lifts and whisked to  London’s highest public garden at 160 metres high on the 35th floor.

The Sky Garden is one of the only free viewpoints in London with 360-degree views over the iconic skyline.

Spend time walking around the entire viewing platform enjoying uninterrupted views of London’s renowned sights, historical landmarks, vast green spaces and impressive skyscrapers. Helpfully, there are signs on the windows telling you what you’re looking at.

The garden is split across 3 floors where there’s also a cafe and a couple of swanky bars and restaurants (that come with a hefty price tag!).

There’s also an open-air terrace which Horizon 22 and The Lookout are missing in our opinion. On a sunny day, the terrace is lovely to stand out on in the fresh air and soak up the best views of London.

What makes the Sky Garden really stand out for us compared to other free viewpoints in London, is the beautifully landscaped gardens.

A selection of drought-resistant Mediterranean and South African species that flourish year-round in full colour were chosen that work in harmony with the space.

Although probably the busiest viewpoint in London , the lush foliage makes it feel quite peaceful. Benches are scattered around where you can sit and soak up the incredible views and bustling yet serene atmosphere.

About SKY GARDEN – LONDON’S HIGHEST PUBLIC GARDEN

Sky-Garden

Sky Garden is like a magical garden in the sky, right on top of a really tall building called the ‘Walkie Talkie’ in London. Imagine being surrounded by plants and flowers with the best view of the city!

An architect named Rafael Viñoly made this special place in 2014. Even though it had some problems at first, now it’s one of the coolest spots to visit. The garden has three levels, and you can enjoy the green gardens, look around from observation decks, and chill out on an open-air terrace.

The best part? It’s free to go in! You just need to pick a time on their website . If you’re into fancy food, you can have a super nice seafood meal at Fenchurch or sip on a tasty cocktail at the Sky Pod Bar while looking at the city below.

But Sky Garden isn’t just a pretty place – it’s also doing good things. They’re working with a group called Thrive to help people feel better through gardening. So, it’s not just a garden; it’s a place that cares about making people happy.

And guess what? Your journey to Sky Garden can be even more fun! You can join a tour, plan a whole day of adventures, or even hire someone to drive you around the city.

So, whether you live nearby or you’re visiting London, Sky Garden is a must-see. It’s where nature meets the city, making it a special and unforgettable place. Don’t forget to reserve your spot and enjoy the view from high above the city!

History of SKY GARDEN in London.

Sky-Garden

The history of Sky Garden in London begins with the design and construction of the ‘Walkie Talkie’ skyscraper, officially known as 20 Fenchurch Street. This distinctive building was designed by renowned Uruguayan architect Rafael Viñoly and completed in 2014. However, its journey was not without challenges.

Upon its opening, the building gained notoriety for its highly reflective windows, earning the nickname ‘Walkie Scorchie.’ The reflective glass caused a peculiar problem – it melted the plastic bodywork of several cars parked below, drawing attention and criticism. In fact, in 2015, the building was awarded the less-than-flattering title of ‘the worst new building in the UK’ in the Carbuncle Cup.

Despite its initial hiccups, the skyscraper’s design and purpose evolved, and it soon became an iconic feature of the London skyline. The top three floors of the ‘Walkie Talkie’ were transformed into the Sky Garden, Europe’s highest public garden, offering a unique and lush green space amidst the urban environment.

Sky Garden, with its landscaped gardens, observation decks, and open-air terrace, provides visitors with unparalleled 360-degree views of London. The space was designed by the award-winning landscape architecture firm Gillespies, incorporating drought-resistant Mediterranean and South African plant species that thrive throughout the year.

Over time, Sky Garden has not only become a popular attraction for its stunning views but has also contributed to a charitable cause. Partnering with Thrive, a horticultural charity, Sky Garden supports initiatives promoting physical and mental health through gardening.

The complete guide to flying to London on points and miles

The Mall decorated with Union Jack flags London UK

London has always been one of the world's most popular tourist destinations, but with the historic coronation of King Charles III and Queen Consort Camilla set to take place May 6, this year is set to be an extra-special time to visit.

The coronation — which will be held at Westminster Abbey — is the first to take place in the United Kingdom since Queen Elizabeth II was crowned in 1953 and will be a once-in-a-generation moment that will see the city pull out all the stops as the world tunes in to watch.

But it's not just royal pomp and ceremony you can expect from a visit to London. From some of the best restaurants in the world to fascinating historical sites to a booming theater scene, there's something for everyone. Better yet, it's easy for Americans to get to London with nonstop flights from most major and midsize U.S. cities. Some airports — namely, New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) — have nearly hourly flights to London's various airports.

Flights to London can be expensive, though, especially if you're coming from the West Coast or a smaller U.S. city. So, let's look at some of your best options for booking flights to London Town using points and miles.

Quick tips for planning a trip to London

sky travel london

With so many airports, airlines and routes serving Western Europe's largest city, it's a different beast than booking other international trips. So before we discuss your booking options, here are a few tips on booking award flights to London.

Search multiple international gateways

Each airline has its own unique hubs where you'll find the most award availability. If you're not finding any award space from your home airport, enter just your transatlantic route between London and the hub airports of the airline you plan to fly with.

For example, let's say you're collecting United MileagePlus miles. If you can't find any award seats from your home airport in Philadelphia, search instead for flights from:

  • Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) .
  • Chicago's O'Hare International Airport (ORD) .
  • Washington, D.C.'s Dulles International Airport (IAD) .
  • Boston Logan International Airport (BOS) .

You may have to fly yourself to one of these airports first — but it's still likely to be significantly cheaper than paying for a ticket to London.

Search all London airports (not just Heathrow)

London is served by multiple airports — and other non-London airports are a moderate drive or train ride to the city. Depending on the airline miles you're using, you can check all of the following airports if you can't find available flights.

These are in order of distance from central London:

  • London City Airport (LCY) .
  • Heathrow Airport (LHR) .
  • Gatwick Airport (LGW) .
  • Southampton Airport (SOU).
  • Bristol Airport (BRS).
  • Birmingham Airport (BHX).

You can simultaneously search for many of these airports by entering "LON" as your destination airport on the airline website. However, this search will likely exclude Birmingham, Bristol and others.

Flexible points are key

If you're booking a last-minute trip to London or traveling during peak season, you can often expect to have a much tougher time finding available award seats than had you booked many months in advance. At the time of writing, however, we were able to find reward availability around the coronation dates in May for all the airlines featured below.

If you cannot find available award seats on American or United, there may be some availability on a connecting flight with Air France or KLM.

Therefore, it's helpful to have transferable rewards such as American Express Membership Rewards or Chase Ultimate Rewards points on hand. You can convert these points into many different airline miles, giving you far more flexibility than had you been collecting one airline currency.

Booking flights to London with points and miles

Now, let's look at some of the best ways to fly from the U.S. to London's various airports.

American Airlines AAdvantage

sky travel london

Getting to London with American Airlines miles is a piece of cake — but there are some pitfalls you should be aware of.

American Airlines flies nonstop to London from more than 10 U.S. cities. Award seats are usually priced as follows:

  • 22,500 miles in economy (Jan. 10 to March 14 and Nov. 1 to Dec. 14 — otherwise, 30,000 miles).
  • 57,500 miles in business class.

When searching for awards, American Airlines may try to sell you seats on its partner British Airways . However, we don't recommend booking British Airways flights since you'll be charged hundreds of dollars in fuel surcharges .

Below are search results on aa.com for a one-way flight between Philadelphia and London. As you can see, you'll pay 30,000 miles in economy. You'll pay $5.60 in taxes when flying American Airlines or a whopping $231.20 in taxes when flying British Airways.

sky travel london

You can see which airline operates the flight below the departure and arrival times.

Transfer partners: American Airlines is a transfer partner of:

  • Bilt Rewards (1:1 transfer ratio).
  • Marriott Bonvoy (3:1 transfer ratio).

If you transfer Marriott points in increments of 60,000, Marriott will deposit an extra 5,000 miles into your AAdvantage account. In short, transferring 60,000 Marriott points will earn you 25,000 American Airlines miles.

Alternatively, you can earn AAdvantage miles with a cobranded credit card. One of our favorites is the Citi® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® World Elite Mastercard® (see rates and fees ), which currently offers 50,000 miles after you spend $2,500 in the first three months of account opening. Plus, you'll enjoy perks like a free checked bag on American flights and a $125 flight discount after you spend $20,000 on the card during your cardmember year.

Award searches and availability: You can book flights directly on aa.com .

ANA Mileage Club

sky travel london

ANA — short for All Nippon Airways — is a Star Alliance member based in Tokyo. Its comprehensive list of airline partners gives you plenty of ways to reach London with ANA Mileage Club miles. You can fly between the U.S. and London for:

  • 55,000 miles round-trip in economy.
  • 88,000 miles round-trip in business class.

Remember that you can only book round-trip flights with ANA miles (no one-way flights are allowed). Stopovers are allowed at the same award price, so you could visit two European cities for the price of one.

Also, be aware of exorbitant fuel surcharges that will appear when flying with some carriers like Austrian, Swiss and Lufthansa. Set your sights on flights operated by Air Canada, TAP Air Portugal, SAS, LOT Polish Airlines and United, as these carriers don't add high fuel surcharges.

Below is an itinerary between Newark and London in business class for 88,000 miles and $300 on partner United Airlines. That's not bad, considering round-trip business-class tickets between these two airports sell for more than $3,600.

sky travel london

Additionally, ANA won't allow you to book an international flight award within 96 hours of boarding. If you're leaving before then, you may be able to get around this by booking into the future and then calling ANA to change the dates within 96 hours. Your results may vary. As long as your flights, routes, carriers, etc., remain the same, you shouldn't be charged any change fees.

Transfer partners: ANA is transfer partner of:

  • Amex Membership Rewards (1:1 transfer ratio).
  • Marriott Bonvoy (3:1 transfer ratio, with 5,000 bonus miles for every 60,000-point increment you transfer).

Award searches and availability: To book, go to ana.co.jp . You may have to switch the language from Japanese to English.

ANA sometimes won't show you all the available options. If you're struggling to find availability, you can check out either aircanada.com or united.com for seats and then call ANA to book once you've found what you're after.

Flying Blue (Air France-KLM)

sky travel london

Flying Blue is a shared loyalty program between Air France and KLM .

Neither of these airlines flies directly between the U.S. and London, but you can route through airports like Paris-Charles de Gaulle Airport (CDG) and Amsterdam Airport Schiphol (AMS) to reach London. Or, you can fly on partners like Delta and Virgin Atlantic nonstop to get there. There are also plenty of other SkyTeam partners that you can use to reach London.

While Flying Blue doesn't technically have an award chart, you can usually reach London for around:

  • 25,000 miles one-way in economy.
  • 55,000 miles one-way in business class.

However, you can sometimes find cheaper flights thanks to Flying Blue Promo Rewards . These award sales discount regular fares by up to 50%.

This is another airline that passes along annoyingly high (though not prohibitive) taxes and fees. Below is a one-way flight from New York to London in economy for 22,500 miles and $83.90 in fees.

sky travel london

Transfer partners: Flying Blue is a transfer partner of all major flexible points currencies:

  • Capital One (1:1 transfer ratio).
  • Chase Ultimate Rewards (1:1 transfer ratio).
  • Citi ThankYou Rewards (1:1 transfer ratio).

Award searches and availability: You can book award flights via airfrance.us . You can view monthly calendar availability without entering your travel dates on the search page. Unfortunately, the calendar can sometimes be a bit misleading — so if you're just not seeing any availability, search day by day.

Related: The ultimate guide to earning and redeeming with Air France-KLM Flying Blue

United Airlines MileagePlus

sky travel london

United Airlines offers plenty of nonstop service from its eight major hubs. You can also use United Airlines miles to fly to London on United's partner airlines, such as Air Canada , Aer Lingus and TAP Air Portugal .

United charges reasonable fares to London — with no excessive fuel surcharges. Here's what you can expect to pay:

  • 30,000 miles in economy (sometimes slightly lower).
  • 45,000 in premium economy.
  • 60,000 miles in business class.

Here's a flight from Boston to London on United Airlines. As you can see, you'll pay 27,300 miles in economy, plus $5.60 in fees.

sky travel london

One of the best features of using United Airlines miles is the number of available seats. United beats much of its competition in this department. Plus, if you have a United Airlines credit card or United elite status , you'll have access to more United Airlines award space than those without. This can make a big difference.

Transfer partners: United Airlines is a transfer partner of:

  • Marriott Bonvoy (3:1.1 transfer ratio, with 5,500 bonus miles for every 60,000-point increment you transfer).

Note that you'll get 10% more miles when transferring Marriott points to United versus other airlines.

Award searches and availability: You can make your searches directly on united.com . It's one of the most effective sites to search for Star Alliance awards.

Related: How to unlock additional award availability with United Airlines

Virgin Atlantic Flying Club

sky travel london

Virgin Atlantic is based in the U.K. It serves 12 U.S. hubs, so you'll likely find many award options when booking.

Unfortunately, this airline incurs higher-than-average taxes on its own flights and on its partners like Air France and KLM. Virgin Atlantic makes up for this by offering extremely low award prices.

Below is a nonstop flight between Atlanta and London on Virgin Atlantic. You'll pay just 12,500 miles (15,000 miles from the West Coast) and $150.30 in taxes and fees. That's a good deal.

sky travel london

However, booking Virgin Atlantic business-class flights is unreasonable — you can easily drop 67,500 miles and $875 in fees one-way .

It's worth noting that you can book Delta flights to London for as little as 15,000 points in economy and 47,500 points in Delta One (business class). You will pay similarly exorbitant taxes and fees for these flights (unlike flights to the rest of Europe, which incur extremely small fees).

Also, note that Delta may not release any availability to Virgin Atlantic within 21 days of departure — so if you're trying to visit London soon, this isn't a good strategy to bank on

Transfer partners: You can quickly accrue Virgin points by transferring from the following flexible points currencies:

Award searches and availability: You can book directly on virginatlantic.com . Some partners you must call to book (like ANA and Hawaiian Airlines ), but that shouldn't be a problem when flying to London.

Related: How to save thousands of miles on Delta One awards to Europe

Bonus strategy

Hopping between the U.K. and the rest of Europe is usually extremely cheap. Flights from cities like Madrid, Paris, Dublin, Amsterdam, etc., to London can cost around $40 each way — especially if you use a budget airline such as easyJet or Ryanair . However, remember that when flying with these European low-cost airlines , you will often be required to pay extra for checked baggage, which may not always prove cost-effective.

Searching for award flights to other European cities gives you tons more opportunities to find cheap travel across the Atlantic. You can save a bundle on the expensive seats and then hop over to London with cash for $100 round-trip.

Read our post on the best ways to travel to Europe using points and miles .

Bottom line

Those with a healthy stash of transferable points (such as Amex Membership Rewards points , Capital One miles , Chase Ultimate Rewards points , etc.) should have no trouble getting to London for extremely cheap. By converting those rewards into ANA miles, Flying Blue miles, United Airlines miles and more, you can find the perfect seats for your travel goals.

Just be mindful of hefty airfare taxes and fees that sometimes crop up when visiting London.

Things Helen Loves

Belfast, travel & life outdoors, the ultimate guide to visiting the sky garden, london.

  • by ThingsHelenLoves

London has a lot of pretty parks and green spaces, but one thing sets the Sky Garden London apart; it’s London’s highest public garden.

Things Helen Loves, sing for Sky Garden on side of building. The graphic Sky Garden logo is a grey circle against a living wall of green plants. Fenchurch Street, London.

It’s also absolutely free to visit and offers visitors stunning views of some of the city’s most iconic landmarks. Free entry, gorgeous views and lots of lovely greenery; you’d be missing a trick if you didn’t add the Sky Garden to your London itinerary.

For obvious reasons, the Sky Garden is a popular spot. I’m not unearthing a hidden gem here. What I do bring is a handful of tips from my own personal experience. I hope I can inspire you to visit and get the most out of your time when you do.

Without further ado…

Book Tickets in Advance

The Sky Garden is free to visit and very popular, so getting in requires a little advance planning. Free tickets are released every Monday morning and need to be booked online. There are a limited number of walk in slots available at staff discretion, but I wouldn’t count on getting in that way.

  • Booking in advance guarantees you entry and gives you a timed arrival slot.
  • Tickets aren’t flexible, they are valid only for the date & time specified. We turned up a touch early and were asked to leave the line and return nearer our ticketed entry time.
  • Each ticket allows for one hour in the Sky Garden, but we didn’t feel rushed.

Things Helen Loves. Green tropical plants fill the foreground of the image, framing a floor to ceiling glass window with views over the city of London. Several people are enjoying the views. Sky Garden, London

Getting There

Find the Sky Garden at 1 Sky Garden Walk  London EC3M 8AF, United Kingdom.

The nearest tube station is Monument. Tower Hill, Tower Gateway, Aldgate, Bank and Mansion House are within walking distance.

If you’d prefer to stay in the area rather than travel across the city to visit, check out this curated list of hotels near the London Sky Garden.

Be Prepared for Security

Like many other high profile venues, getting into the Sky Garden requires passing through security. It can be a little time consuming when it’s busy, but needs must to get to the fun bit.

Security involves having bags scanned and passing through a metal detector so make it easy on yourself. Pack light, keep bags small and be prepared.

Security conquered, it’s into the super fast lift for flight to the 35th floor and an hour in an oasis in the sky.

The Sky Garden

Designed by award-winning landscape architecture practice Gillespies, the planting in the garden is mainly made up of drought resistant plants designed to flourish year round. Basically, lots of lovely greenery to create a tropical garden feel.

Things Helen Loves, greenery and a mature palm tree in the Sky Garden, Fenchurch St, London

Pops of colour come from the flowering plants, including African Lily and beautiful Birds of Paradise. Clever use of levels and planting have created lovely places to pause, snap a picture and take it all in.

Things Helen Loves, picture of pink tropical flowers in the Sky Garden, London. Pink blooms grow vertically with green stems alongside.

The views are fantastic, inside and out. Best place for those outdoor views being…

The Balcony

The Sky Garden is able to declare itself London’s highest public garden because it’s at the top of a flippin’ massive building. And that means views. Across, up and down the River Thames. Looking out over the city, you’ll be able to see landmarks like St Pauls Cathedral, The Shard and St Dunstans in the East.

Things Helen Loves, image of the Monument to The Great Fire of London as viewed from street level.

Build in time before your visit to see the nearby Monument to the Great Fire of London . Being able to gaze up at it from ground level and then down from Sky Garden level is pretty cool.

When They Say Free, They Mean It

Honestly, I thought that admission would be free but it might feel a bit hard sell once you were up there to buy drinks etc. Nothing could be further from the truth. When they say public access is free, that’s exactly what they mean.

There’s even signage inviting you to use the tables and not buy anything.

sky travel london

Free chilled water is available from a self service machine at the Sky Pod bar in the centre of the Sky Garden.

But If You Fancy A Coffee …

It comes in a cute cup with an Instagram friendly caption. And it really was a nice cup of coffee.

Things Helen Loves, image of green coffee cup being held by a hand in front of a view of the Sky Garden, London. The back ground is floor to ceiling windows with city views and lots of garden greenery. Cup reads, 'All I need is a hot drink and this view'

If you fancy more than a coffee and feel like a little splurge, there are a couple of dining options.

  • Darwin Brasserie declares itself ‘London’s highest rooftop brasserie, with the best views in Sky Garden’. Expect to pay around £60 a head for a three course set menu.
  • Fenchurch Restaurant is currently undergoing a refurb and will reopen on April 15th 2024. The new Fenchurch will offer a British- Caribbean foodie experience with prices around £50 a head for a three course lunch.

Head Up to the City Garden Bar

The crowds tend to build towards the bottom and middle of the Sky Garden around the balcony, the bar and the entrance.

Head up to the City Garden at the rear. There’s plenty of seating tucked in amongst the plants. The light up there is fantastic and the views even better. The views from the stairways to the left and the right showcase parts of London you wouldn’t usually get a birds eye view of. Look out for the window stickers telling you which landmarks you’re looking at.

Things Helen Loves, views to the river Thames and the Shard from the Sky Garden in London.

The Beat-the-Crowds Hack.

The Sky Garden is a popular spot and it gets very, very busy. If you want to go for the sweeping, people free photo’s or you just want a more peaceful experience, there is a little trick.

Public access to the Sky Garden begins at 10.00. The Darwin Brasserie opens at 08.30 for breakfast.

A breakfast reservation means you’ll catch the quietest early hours and bypass the need to snag tickets online. A restaurant reservation means you don’t need a separate access ticket. Breakfast will set you back about £15-40 a head, find the menu here .

Things Helen Loves, view over London from Sky Garden at Fenchurch Street. The River Thames can be seen to left of image along side city streets and landmarks.

I loved exploring the Sky Garden and think you will too. Find details, tickets and opening times here.

I’ve been probably a decade ago.. it’s amazing it’s still free 👏

Oh wow, ready for a return visit? I think the Sky Garden has enjoyed riding the social media wave, it’s an insta-favourite! Thanks so much for reading and taking time to comment, appreciate it.

I used to live near there. I moved out of London now, not really my cup of tea. Too busy for my liking!

The Sky Garden was nice, though. I tried to go back 2 years after I first visited, but it was always too full, so I found a small garden nearby. I forgot what it was called now.

Also, I’m not on the socials. Had to give that up 😁

It’s interesting to see some updates, though. I did tell a colleague to visit the place.

Sky Garden is a must-see destination for tourists visiting London as it offers breathtaking views of the London skyline and famous landmarks such as the Shard, the Gherkin, and the Tower of London. Thanks for sharing, and have a good day 🙂 Aiva xx

I find it amazing that this is still free, it’s such a great view and so popular! Most people just share photos of the views, it’s good to see the lush gardens being featured too 🙂 And great tip about breakfast, that hadn’t occurred to me as an option.

I’m surprised it’s remained free too, and that there’s no pressure at all to buy when your up there. It’s a real London gem.

Good tip about breakfast

I didn’t know about this place – though we must have been very close at the monument on our last but one London trip. The breakfast tip sounds handy!

Yes, just a short stroll from Monument. Booking breakfast would bypass the queues and the crowds so it’s a good way to do it! One for the list for the next London trip?

I would definitely take in that breakfast to take advantage of being there earlier (not to mention having a good meal to start out the day!). This high-rise garden setting looks and sounds like an absolute must-see if Mrs. Chess and I ever visited the UK. Great shots taken…truly wonderful views.🙂

Thank you, the London views are wonderful! They Sky Garden should be on every London itinerary. I hope you make it to the UK one day.

What a great review Helen. I’ve been up to the Sky Garden many times but hadn’t considered the idea of having breakfast there. It sounds like a good plan if we are staying in that part of town.

It would be a lovely start to the day wouldn’t it? I only discovered you could book breakfast with early access when we were there. It’s definitely something I’d like to try and do at some point.

Thanks for showing me just another item for my bucket list.

You’re very welcome. The Sky Garden is a great experience, one I’d definitely recommend!

Thanks for sharing this. It’s definitely bookmarked as a Thing To Do in London now.

How have I never heard of this!? Taking the kids up to the Cabinet War Rooms this week so might add this on the itinerary!

If you can it’s definitely worth squeezing in a visit! Enjoy your time in London and thanks for stopping by.

My friends have been talking about taking me to the Sky Garden for years, so I definitely need to make that happen. Going for breakfast is a great idea!

Breakfast with friends in such a lovely London spot, definitely a grand idea!

A great guide to this wonderful place. I went for my anniversary and we ate in Darwin Brasserie – the food was wonderful!

That’s a lovely way to celebrate an anniversary.

Loved the views from here, and it is still free!I visited it in 2016

I love that it’s remained free and so welcoming, it’s a London highlight.

It’s forever on my list but whenever I’m in London I never seem to fit it in!

I was exactly the same, it can be tricky to time tickets to a visit. Definitely one to keep in mind if you get the chance, it’s a lovely place and the views are grand.

Thanks for sharing such valuable information. Your perspective is refreshing and has given me a lot to think about. TIRUPATI TRAVELS

7 Thrilling Places To Go Skydiving In London

Are you an adventure seeker wanting to know where to skydive in London? To experience freefall, choose outdoor skydiving, or if you fear heights, you can practise it indoor too. This list covers all the best places to go skydiving in London... happy flying!

Secret London

An adrenaline rush, a simultaneous spike in fear and thrill, and gravity working overtime. Add to that the drumming of your heart while everything else goes silent. Skydiving is one of the most exhilarating sports on Earth. It forces you to overcome all mental blocks and take the plunge. If you’re scared, that just adds spice to the experience. If you’re searching for places to go outdoor or indoor skydiving in London, we can help. While skydiving is prohibited within the city due to air-traffic restrictions, here are seven of the best places to go skydiving in London within reasonable travelling distance.

1. North London Skydiving

View this post on Instagram

Clear blue sky all around you, air resistance dragging your cheeks to the back of your head, and below sprawling fields – towards which you’re hurtling at 120mph. Sound exciting? If you’re looking for unforgettable place to go outdoor skydiving in London, check out North London Skydiving. These award-winners host tandem skydiving, where you and the instructor jump out of the plane strapped together.

The company have been conducting skydiving for over two decades and their trainers complete around 800 jumps each year, so you can be sure you’re in safe hands. You fly up in the de Havilland Twin Otter for 15 minutes before reaching the height from where you begin the descent back to Earth. You have two height options for the dive: 10,000 ft and 15,000 ft, which is the highest altitude you can jump from in the UK.

You’ll freefall for almost 30 seconds in the shorter dive and for around a minute in the higher one. The parachute opens around a mile before you land and takes five minutes to slowly take you back to the ground. Sounds pretty thrilling to us!

You’ll find North London Skydiving at Chatteris Airfield, Block Fen Drove, Wimblington, Chatteris, March, Cambridgeshire, PE15 0FB. You’re better off driving here as there are no stations nearby.

2. GoSkydive

GoSkydive are in central southern England, around 95 minutes from London. They’re specialists for people who have never taken the plunge before. But if you’re a pro wondering where to skydive in London, you too will love them. Their highly supportive staff offer an incredible overall experience, and jumpers will witness amazing views across the prehistoric landscape associated with Stonehenge.

As well as jumps from 15,000 ft and 10,000 ft, GoSkydive offer a shorter jump from 7,000 ft. This ‘Taster’ dive lets you briefly experience a ten-second freefall before you enjoy a five-minute canopy sky ride.

For the jump, you can hire a ‘Freefall Photographer’ who will capture all your movements during the dive, including your interaction with other divers. With the ‘Instructor Handcam’ package, you’ll get close-ups, ride footage and the selfie of a lifetime. If that doesn’t satisfy your photogenic self, the ‘Totally Epic’ option will give photos capturing every moment of your fall – it combines pictures, videos and unbelievable interaction with your photographer mid-air.

You’ll find GoSkydive at Old Sarum Park, Salisbury, Wiltshire, SP4 6EB. You’re better off driving here as there are no stations nearby.

3. iFLY Indoor Skydiving

View this post on Instagram A post shared by iFLY UK Indoor Skydiving (@iflyuk)

Looking for the thrill of the drop but without the fear of the height? At iFLY, you don’t need to part from Mother Earth to experience the dive. They introduced indoor skydiving near London a few years back. They operate in multiple locations, including Basingstoke (30 minutes southwest of the M25 motorway) and Milton Keynes (around 50 minutes northwest). They’ve also recently added a brand-new site at the O2 Arena in Greenwich , which is absolutely fantastic it has to be said (we’ve tried it ourselves).

First-time divers get two instructors, one who helps you with the dive and the other managing the airspeed. They teach you the necessary hand gestures for communication before you step into the tunnel – a 12-foot-wide circle with winds speeding at 165 mph. And then the magic begins. Their VR experience lets you see what it would be like to skydive over a city. While you immerse yourself in the moment, their HD cameras do a great job of capturing your expressions.

Divers of all abilities are welcome to enjoy an uplifting experience at iFLY’s facilities – including kids – and they have wheelchair access too.

You’ll find iFLY at 602 Marlborough Gate, Central Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire, MK9 3XS and Basingstoke Leisure Park, Euskirchen Way, Basingstoke, Hampshire, RG22 6PG. You’re better off driving here as there are no stations nearby.

4. Skydiving London

Skydiving London is true to its name – it offers the sport at the closest location to London that you can get, just 50 minutes from the M25. Need proper training to get a licence? Their trainers, with over three decades of experience, can help. And that’s not all. They can also assist with excellent 4K tech for shoots if you plan to skydive for TV or a film.

Their sessions are open for groups, Accelerated Freefall and static line diving, which is a fantastic experience for first-time divers who want to progress to jumping solo. You begin the drop at 3500 ft and slowly move closer to the ground. After this, you can start to prepare for a solo jump and move on to get qualification training under the BPA Ram Air Progression System (RAPS).

Skydiving London is a British Parachute Association (BPA) affiliated centre offering outstanding jump experiences, whether that’s a one-time dive just for the thrill, or to train professionally. So if you’re wondering where to skydive in London, this just could be your go-to place.

You’ll find Skydiving London at 2 Milbanke Court, Bracknell, Berkshire, RG12 1RP. Their drop zone is at Chiltern Park Aerodrome, Icknield Road, Ipsden, Oxfordshire, OX10 6AS. You’re better off driving here as there are no stations nearby.

5. Skydive Headcorn

A 45-minute drive from the M25 motorway, Skydive Headcorn in Kent offers tandem jumps and a host of training options. Licensed divers can simply drop in with their British Skydiving membership, hire a kit and prepare to give in to gravity.

In the Accelerated Freefall (AFF) training programme, you are accompanied by two instructors holding you during the decline that lasts for 30 to 40 seconds. If you continue the training, the number of trainers is reduced to one until you are ready to go solo. This usually takes at least eight jumps, and it’s 18 to receive your ‘A’ licence.

Anyone can dive with Skydive Headcorn without prior experience. You can trust their staff to ease your nerves with their contagious humour and to capture your fall with incredible pictures and top-quality videos – the shots are totally worth paying for trust us! When the chute opens, you sway safely down to Earth while the instructors point out the coastline and some great places.

You’ll find Skydive Headcorn at Shenley Road, Ashford, Kent, TN27 9HX. Nearest station is Headcorn.

6. UK Skydiving Adventures

View this post on Instagram A post shared by John Storey (@storey.1803)

The British Skydiving-affiliated UK Skydiving Adventures provide ultimate flying experiences in 19 centres across the country. In Brackley, Northamptonshire – around 75 minutes northwest of the M25 – they offer tandem dives and AFF courses to divers of all levels. There are on-site refreshments for you and any spectators, and you can even take your dog along (but not for the flight).

Closest to east London is the centre in Maidstone, Kent, a 45-minute drive from the M25. H ere you can perform tandem dives, and facilities include a canteen, bar, restaurant, shop, and bunking and camping facilities. In the other direction is the Reading centre, 40 minutes west of the M25. Again tandem dives are available, as is AFF Level 1 training.

You’ll find UK Skydiving Adventures at PO Box, Bicester, OX26 9FN. They organise jumps at various drop zones around the UK. You can find out more here.

7. UK Parachuting

With hoards of admirers across the country, UK Parachuting impress everyone who lands at their door. Convenient for those based in northeast London, they have two centres at Peterborough and Beccles, which are around a 90-minute and two-hour drive from the M25 respectively. A dive at the former means you can relish a breathtaking view of four counties on your way back down to terra firma.

Go for a tandem dive with one of their instructors backing you as you freefall for 50 seconds before landing safely, or choose the AFF (Accelerated Freefall) from 13,000 ft; both are exhilarating. In the latter, you steer your fall for the five-minute descent to safely land in the drop zone.

You’ll find UK Parachuting drop zones at Sibson Airfield, Wansford Rd, Wansford, Peterborough, Cambridgeshire, PE8 6NE and Beccles Airfield, Brock Road, Beccles, Suffolk, NR34 7XD. You’re better off driving here as there are no stations nearby.

A sport unlike any other, skydiving demands mental strength and physical stamina. It draws adventurers from every corner of the world. Therefore, these best spots for skydiving in London are a must-visit for any thrill-seekers!

The Ultimate Guide to Your Skygarden Visit in 2024

Skygarden Visit

Adding a Skygarden visit to your itinerary? Be sure to read this Ultimate Guide to Your Skygarden Visit to make the most out of your trip. Enjoy!

In my opinion, the best bits of London are free. From picnicking on Primrose Hill, to walking around the nooks and crannies of the city, I’ve always found ways to discover London without it denting my wallet. Which is why I wholeheartedly love the Skygarden .

Every time I go, I’m swept with the magic of London skylines and the disbelief that this is still very much, free. So, if you ever find yourself in need of a picturesque view and skyscraper wanderings, here’s the ultimate guide to your Skygarden visit.

But first, let’s sift through some details.

Why Visit the Skygarden

Skygarden

In case you’re still in need of convincing, the Skygarden is London’s highest garden beautifully centered in the heart of Bank. Designed by Uruguayan architect Rafael Viñoly taking his vision for a public park to the sky, the Skygarden is often referred to as the “Walkie Talkie” for its eclectic shape.

Between the daily free entry, chic bar and brasserie dosed in greenery and of course, the insanely seductive views that greet you on the 35th floor, I’m constantly visiting this hidden gem of London. With so much to offer there’s simply no reason for you to pass on a Skygarden visit.

When to go to the Skygarden

Skygarden Visit

Views of any city are best had during sunset and sunrise. However due to the opening times, (10am-6pm) I’d suggest going around 5pm or leaving your Skygarden visit for the morning to spend the rest of the day wandering the area.

Where to Buy Tickets for your Skygarden Visit

Skygarden

Although the Skygarden is free to visit you will need to book a ticket in advance.

Luckily getting tickets for your Skygarden visit couldn’t be easier. Pop over to their website , fill the booking information on the top right, and you’re all set. Keep in mind…

  • Reservations fill up fast, so book around 2 weeks in advance
  • Each ticket only allows entry for the listed/date and time
  • Each ticket permits 1 hour entry
  • Pack light if you can, as you’ll have to do a security screening upon entry

London Life & Inspiration

Best views in london: 20 most panoramic views of the london skyline.

Despite all the trips I take and mountains I hike, the London skyline will always be one of my favourite views.

With its skyscrapers and landmarks poking out from in between normal buildings it’s one of the most iconic skylines , and it never gets boring to watch.

There are a number of epic viewpoints dotted all over the city, from which you can see incredible panoramic views of London.

In this guide I’ve put together a compilation of my personal favourite views in London, and everything you need to know about visiting them including location and entrance fees (if there are any).

Ready to discover the best views in London? Let’s dive right in!

The view over Tower Bridge and the River Thames from Monument

In this guide:

  • 1.1 London Eye
  • 1.2 Monument to the Great Fire of London
  • 1.3 St Paul’s Cathedral
  • 1.4 Emirates Air Line
  • 1.5 Tate Modern
  • 1.6 The Shard
  • 2.1 Primrose Hill
  • 2.2 Alexandra Palace
  • 2.3 Parliament Hill
  • 2.4 Horniman Museum & Gardens
  • 2.5 The Garden at 120
  • 2.6 Greenwich Park
  • 3.1 Sky Garden
  • 3.2 SushiSamba
  • 3.3 LSQ Rooftop
  • 3.4 Frank’s Café
  • 3.5 OXO Tower
  • 3.6 Madison’s Rooftop Bar
  • 3.7 12th Knot

Famous landmarks with panoramic views of London

The London Eye is possibly one of the most famous and recognisable attractions in London. Located right along the Thames River it has incredible views over Westminster, the river and the London skyline.

Standard tickets are £27, fast track tickets are £37 (given how big the queues can get, it might be worth going for fast track!) and you can also get tickets for £40.50 that include the London Eye and another famous London attraction.

It’s a touristy spot, there’s no denying that, but when the view is so good, it can’t be helped! There are usually up to 25 people per capsule and it takes about 30 minutes to complete a rotation.

Click here to book your London Eye ticket!

Monument to the Great Fire of London

Despite walking past Monument every day on my way to work, I can’t believe it took me eight years to actually visit this viewpoint.

The Monument to the Great Fire of London is a 62 metre column that was built to commemorate the Great Fire of London (as you may have guessed by the name) and celebrate the rebuilding of the city.

There’s a spiral staircase with 311 steps that leads to the viewing platform at the top. From here you can enjoy epic 360 views over London. I love it because it’s high enough to be over most of the roofs, but not too high to make you lose the details.

You can get a ticket on the moment and it costs £5 for adults (or less for children, students and seniors) and it’s open from 9:30AM to 5:30PM or 6PM depending on the season.

The view over London from the Monument to the Great Fire of London

St Paul’s Cathedral

St Paul’s Cathedral is not only one of the most famous landmarks in London, which you can easily recognise from most viewpoints, but it is also a stunning viewpoint in itself.

You can climb to the top of the dome, and enjoy a great view of the London skyline, from a different perspective.

There are three different galleries within the dome, so that you can appreciate the views as you climb up. The top gallery is called the Golden Gallery and is 85 metres above the cathedral floor, 528 steps up. It’s a trek but it’s well worth the view!

The entrance fee to St Paul’s is £20, or £17 if you book online beforehand . It gives you access not only to the viewing galleries but also to the cathedral floor and crypt, if you’re interested in learning a bit of history!

Emirates Air Line

If you’re looking for a bit of a unique view of London, the Emirates Air Line will give you that. It’s also the only moving viewpoint that also serves a purpose besides just providing a view of the London skyline.

The cable car connects the Greenwich Peninsula to the Royal Docks, and soars high above the River Thames.

There are cable cars every 30 seconds and the journey lasts around 10 minutes, except for evenings when it’s stretched to 12-13 minutes so you can enjoy the London skyline at night.

During the journey you will see epic views over the Londoon O2 Arena, the skyscrapers of Canary Wharf and the river. You can simply tap in and out of the Emirates Air Line with you Oyster card and pay £3.50 per journey.

They also offer a Discovery Experience ticket for £10.70 that includes also an on-board film tour, a souvenir guide and entrance to the Emirates Aviation Experience.

Tate Modern

The Tate Modern is a modern art gallery located on the banks of the River Thames. It has an open viewing terrace on the top floor, from which you can enjoy epic views over the London skyline.

From here you can see particularly well the dome of St Paul’s Cathedral. Entry to the viewing terrace is free, just like entry to the Tate Modern.

There are exhibitions that change regularly which are paid, but entry to the standard exhibition is free. There is a bar on the top floor so that you can have drinks and snacks while you watch the view.

With its 309.6 metres the Shard is the tallest building in the UK, and the 6 th  tallest building in Europe. At such a height, needless to say the views from up there are pretty incredible.

There are multiple viewpoints in the Shard that you can access. The most visited is The View from the Shard, the viewing platforms on floors 68, 69 and 72. Entry costs £30.95 if you pay on the day or £24.50 if you book online beforehand .

However there are also a number of restaurants and bars in the Shard, just a couple floors below the viewing platforms.

The Oblix at the Shard bar has cocktails for around £15, which is not only cheaper than entry at the viewing deck, but you also get to sip on a tasty cocktail while you enjoy the view. It’s a win-win if you ask me!

In the Shard you will also find one of the most amazing hotels with a view in London !

Click here to book your entry at View from the Shard!

Parks & Gardens with stunning London views

Primrose hill.

Primrose Hill is one of those places that Londoners love, but not many tourists know about yet. Located in the northern area of Regents Park the hill is only about 65 metres high, but it offers beautiful views over the London skyline.

My favourite part of this viewpoint is seeing the combination on trees and skyscrapers together. From here you can see the London Eye, the Shard and BT Tower.

If you visit on a sunny summer day you will find Primrose Hill full of Londoners enjoying the view with a drink or picnic in the sun. It’s the perfect place to relax, switch off for a bit and just appreciate this beautiful city .

Enjoying the view over Regents Park and the London skyline from Primrose Hill

Alexandra Palace

Known by Londoners as Ally Pally, Alexandra Palace is a huge palace and park located in North London.

It’s often used as a venue for private events and they have all sorts of public events all year round, from ice-skating shows to cooking classes, concerts and event vintage market sales.

Besides being one of London’s hidden gems , it also offers beautiful views from its gardens. From here you can enjoy a relaxing day in the park, while looking out over the skyline of London, far in the distance above the trees and houses.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Alexandra Palace (@yourallypally)

Parliament Hill

Parliament Hill is a hill in the south-east corner of Hampstead Heath, a park in north-west London. Here you can enjoy a picnic in the sun, while admiring the London skyline away from all the chaos of its streets.

Besides the view you can also spend an enjoyable time in Hampstead Heath, one of the most popular parks in London .

Horniman Museum & Gardens

Located in South London, Horniman Museum & Gardens is a museum with displays of anthropology, natural history and musical instruments.

They have a variety of exhibitions as well as a butterfly house, an aquarium and a market in the gardens every Sunday.

The garden is made up of 16 acres and is the perfect place to enjoy a leisurely weekend stroll, while appreciating the London skyline peeking through above the tree-line.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Michael Tomas (@londonviewpoints)

The Garden at 120

If you’re looking for a quiet corner in the middle of the city, the Garden at 120 will give you just that. Located on the rooftop of 120 Fenchurch Street this garden is free to enter, and you can spend as long as you want relaxing and enjoying the views.

There is a small stream, some green areas and benches to sit on. What I like about it is that it’s not super high, so you can have a great view of the London skyline but without feeling detached from it as you might from the top of the Shard.

Whether you’re visiting London and only have a breather moment during a busy London itinerary , or you work in the area and are looking for a new and relaxing lunch spot, the Garden at 120 can provide you with just that.

The view from the Garden at 120

Greenwich Park

Greenwich Park is one of the Royal Parks of London, and used to be a hunting park.

There’s no hunting going on today fortunately, but the 183 acres of Greenwich Park are perfect for anyone looking to escape from the chaos of the city, and searching for refuge somewhere green and quiet.

At Greenwich Park you will also find cafes , a rose garden, a tennis centre and even a wilderness deer park.

From Greenwich Park you have an epic view of the London skyline, with the recognisable outlines of the Shard and the City being just about visible.

Bars & restaurants with the best views of the London skyline

Sky Garden will always be one of my favourite views in London. Entry to Sky Garden is free, but if you plan on visiting during the day you have to book your time-slot online beforehand.

It then becomes walk-in after 6pm, although you might have to queue a bit to get in.

They also have a business casual dress code policy for the evening (if you book a slot during the day you can be dressed however you want) so you might want to dress up a bit nice before visiting.

In my personal experience however you don’t have to go overboard, just try to avoid trainers. Sky Garden is a really cool space with plants, bars and restaurants , which also offers activities like sunrise yoga and live music.

There is an outdoor terrace from which you can enjoy the view, but they close it once it gets dark. Worry not, the floor to ceiling glass windows offer incredible 360 views all over London.

Being mostly indoors you can enjoy the view from here also if you’re visiting London in winter or on a rainy day .

Enjoying the sunset over London from Sky Garden

Located on the 38 th  and 39 th  floors of the Heron Tower, SushiSamba is the highest outdoor dining terrace in Europe (as well as one of the most photogenic in London ). It has incredible 360 views of the City, as well as a great food and drink offering.

The restaurant offers a Japanese, Brazilian and Peruvian fusion cuisine, with choices of taster and set menus so you can sample all the best items on the menu.

They also serve classic cocktails with a twist, such as a Cherry Blossom Negroni or Kaffirinha.

Prices are a bit on the expensive side, but for the dining experience you get and the view, it’s well worth it! It tends to get booked up pretty quickly so make sure to book online beforehand.

LSQ Rooftop

Located in the heart of Leicester Square, this bar has epic views over Leicester Square and the London skyline.

It has an outdoors balcony as well as floor to ceiling windows that can be opened up in summer, to create a larger outdoors terrace and bar area.

From LSQ Rooftop you can look down into the hustle and bustle of Leicester Square, or at the skyline of London and recognise the main landmarks like Westminster, the London Eye, the Shard and the City.

It’s especially beautiful at sunset when the sky turns pink and it lights up the buildings. Drinks are priced at around £15 for a cocktail and £7 for a beer.

It’s a bit pricey but considering the location and that it’s one of the best rooftop bars in London , it could be much more.

Frank’s Café

Moving away from Central London, you can find incredible views of the London skyline from Frank’s Café in Peckham.

Located on the top floor of Peckham Multi-Storey Car Park, Frank’s Café is a bit of a hipster venue, with a menu that goes from brunch to evening drinks.

It’s more reasonably priced than the other bars, with cocktail prices ranging from £7 to £8.50. I love the view from Frank’s Café because you are far out enough that there are no tall buildings around you.

Only low houses and in the distance you can see the skyscrapers of the City, the Shard and Canary Wharf.

The OXO Tower Wharf is a building on the south bank of the River Thames with a prominent tower (you’ll recognise it if you see it, with big OXO letters on it).

The building actually has multiple purposes, with a series of arts and crafts shops, as well as a restaurant and bar. On the 8 th  floor of the tower there are three different venues, a restaurant, a bar and a brasserie.

Each has its own menu and you can visit at any time of day, from afternoon tea to dinner and evening cocktails. From here you have great views over the London skyline.

Madison’s Rooftop Bar

The view from Madison’s Rooftop Bar might not be as high as some of these other restaurants, but that doesn’t make it any less noteworthy.

I actually love the view from here, as it’s really close to St Paul’s Cathedral and being right under the dome has a way of making you feel small.

Madison’s and the viewing terrace are on the top floor of a shopping mall called One New Change. If you don’t fancy a drink, you can just head up to the viewing deck for free.

Enjoying the sunset over St Paul's Cathedral from Madisons Rooftop Bar

12 th  Knot

If you enjoyed the view from the Tate Modern, but are looking for something a little fancier (maybe an actual restaurant and not an art gallery?) 12 th  Knot is the place for you.

This bar and restaurant is located along the River Thames, with incredible views over the St Paul’s Cathedral dome and the river.

Cocktails are priced between £13 and £15, with also a wide selection of food choices and spirits. From their outdoors balcony you can watch people walking past along the river, as well as the epic London skyline.

Capeesh Sky Bar

I couldn’t help but close this ultimate guide to London’s best views with Capeesh Sky Bar . Located on the 48 th  floor, in the heart of Canary Wharf, Capeesh Sky Bar offers a different view from all the others on this list.

From here you can see the City, the Shard, the River Thames and pretty much the whole London skyline. You can do so while tasting delicious Italian food and sipping on tasty cocktails (for a reasonable £11 to £14 per cocktail price).

What a great round-up! The first thing I look for in a new city are some beautiful bird-eye views, so this list is really up my alley!

London City Airport loses bid to overturn Saturday flight restrictions - but passenger cap raised

The airport's chief executive said she was "disappointed" by the ruling, while a local campaign group hailed it as a "big win for residents". The planned increase in passengers was criticised by environmental groups, although the maximum number of flights allowed will remain unchanged.

London City Airport (LCA) has lost its bid to overturn a ban on Saturday afternoon flights - but has been granted permission to increase its annual number of passengers.

Bosses at the site in Newham, east London , had wanted its current 12.30pm Saturday curfew to be pushed back to 6.30pm.

However, the government has now ruled the restrictions should continue following opposition from residents and campaigners.

A bid by the airport to increase its annual passenger cap from 6.5 million to 9 million by 2031 was approved, although the maximum number of flights allowed - up to 111,000 per year - remains unchanged.

A government reported noted that new planes - which LCA described as "cleaner and quieter" - can accommodate more seats, allowing for an increase in passenger numbers.

Campaign group HACAN East described the government's ruling as a "big win for residents", while the mayor of Newham Rokhsana Fiaz said it was a "victory" for people living in the area.

However, the airport was also successful in securing approval for a shake-up of flight times, with the number of early-morning flights increased from six to nine, which Ms Faiz said was "deeply" concerning.

She added: "We will be studying the decision notice carefully and considering all options as we remain concerned about the detrimental impacts on the health and quality of life of our residents."

It comes after the airport's initial application to ease flight restrictions - which ban take-offs and landings from 12.30pm on Saturdays to 12.30pm on Sundays - was rejected by Newham Council last year following concerns over the impact on climate change , pollution and noise.

The decision was then referred to the government after the airport appealed.

LCA said it was "disappointed" by the rejection of part of its appeal and said a later closing time on a Saturday "would have enabled more choice and flexibility for passengers".

Chief executive Alison FitzGerald added: "As the government has recognised in its decision, rejecting our request to extend our Saturday afternoon operating hours will slow down airlines bringing cleaner, quieter next-generation aircraft to the airport."

Meanwhile, some environmental groups hit out at the decision to allow an increase in passenger numbers, with Greenpeace UK describing it as a "surprising misstep undermining [the] UK's climate leadership".

The campaign organisation added: "It will also mostly benefit an elite of wealthy frequent fliers while dumping the environmental costs on some of London's poorest neighbourhoods.

"Over half of the destinations served by the airport can be reached by train in under six hours, with Amsterdam and Edinburgh among the most popular routes. Instead of airport expansions, we need better and cheaper train travel ."

Johann Beckford, from thinktank Green Alliance, said: "This is a disappointing decision given the new government promised it would prioritise tackling climate change.

"Its own independent advisers, the Climate Change Committee, clearly state that airport expansion is currently incompatible with net zero ."

It comes after a public inquiry heard that people living in the area were suffering from sleep problems and anxiety due to noise from the airport's planes, and feared Saturday afternoon flights would make the issues worse.

A government report noted that some complained of having to keep doors and windows closed in warm weather, while also being forced to pause conversations while aircraft took off.

A letter on behalf of Housing Secretary Angela Rayner and Transport Secretary Louise Haigh confirmed on Monday: "They have decided to grant planning permission [to LCA], subject to revised conditions that maintain the existing Saturday curfew period."

A government spokesperson added: "We are committed to securing the long-term future of the aviation sector in the UK while protecting our environmental obligations."

American Airlines cuts international flight from Phoenix. Here's what we know

Portrait of Michael Salerno

A year-round international route at the Phoenix airport will now only be offered seasonally.

American Airlines plans to suspend nonstop flights between Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport and Heathrow Airport in London in late October.

American began Phoenix-London flights in March 2019 on a seasonal basis. The route was suspended a year later because of travel restrictions during the COVID-19 pandemic, then relaunched in 2022 as a year-round route when travel restrictions were lifted.

Now, the route will become seasonal again. After a five-month pause, American's nonstop Phoenix-London flights are scheduled to resume in spring 2025.

This is the first service reduction for one of Sky Harbor's intercontinental flights since they returned following the pandemic. Service has increased in recent months: Air France launched a new route to Paris , and Condor Airlines' flights between Phoenix and Frankfurt, Germany expanded to three times weekly and began flying with a larger plane .

When does American Airlines' Phoenix-London nonstop end?

American Airlines' last nonstop flight between Phoenix and London is Friday, Oct. 25, 2024, according to American Airlines' flight schedule.

The route will resume on a seasonal basis starting Saturday, March 29, 2025.

What airlines fly from Phoenix to London?

British Airways also operates Phoenix-London flights between Sky Harbor and Heathrow.

British Airways, which has served Sky Harbor since 1996 , will continue to offer once-daily nonstop flights between the two cities while American's route is suspended for the winter season.

Why is the Phoenix-London flight ending?

American Airlines provided the following statement when asked why the Phoenix-London route would shift from year-round to seasonal:

"As part of the continuous evaluation of our network, American Airlines will adjust service from London (Heathrow Airport). Together with our partner British Airways, we will continue to operate service from more than 25 destinations across the United States to (Heathrow Airport). We’re proactively reaching out to impacted customers to offer alternate travel arrangements."

The Best Hotels in London to Take Your Other Half

Where to wow your partner on your next visit to the capital

Headshot of Esquire Editors

London can be an expensive place, but if you're coming for a relatively short stay suddenly the luxury hotel scene opens right up to you. There are few better cities in the world to have a short term blow out, where the building you're staying in is as memorable as the city around it. The best hotels in London are an experience in and of themselves.

Or maybe you're a Londoner who just needs to step outside of your own four walls, away from your own bed, for a night or two? If lockdown taught us anything, it’s that a change of scenery does us good every now and again.

Here we round up the best London hotels for a short, romantic stay. They range from the reasonable to the high end of the price scale, but they all have a special something to recommend them above the rest.

The one with Seventies cool: The Standard

best hotels in london

A red bubble lift is the only pop of colour on the beautiful brutalist facade of The Standard Hotel in King’s Cross (the group’s first London outpost), but it’s a sign of things to come. Walk inside, straight through to the open plan lounge/bar/restaurant, and you’ll be met with a tribute to confidently cool Sixties and Seventies interior design – Austin Powers' swinging London with a dash of counterculture Hollywood Hills; walnut panelling, soft leather sofas, furry walls and shag carpeting, geometric shapes and optical-art murals – all conceived by American designer Shawn Hausman. He was inspired by the building’s previous life as a library during that period, so you’ll find a selection of carefully curated books in the lounge too.

Venture up into one of the 266 rooms, and you’ll discover tastefully kitsch homages to London transport designs (in the rooms facing St Pancras), minimalist mixes of relaxing wood furnishings and plants (in the windowless Cosy Core rooms at the centre of the building), and in some of the suites towards the top of the building, an al fresco bathtub and private bars (as well as complimentary raincoats. Not quite as glamorous, granted, but very, very useful in London).

The one with the stunning rooftop pool: Art'otel Battersea

As swimming pools in London go, there are very few that can compete with the art’otel’s rooftop offering. Take the lift up to the 16 th floor of the newly opened hotel and you’ll be greeted with spectacular views overlooking the redeveloped Battersea Power Station standing just across the street from the heated pool, jacuzzi and bar space. It’s not quite in the splash zone, but it’s close enough. Before you jump into the pool – which at 10 metres long isn’t just for lounging – you should take in the 360° views of London’s skyline. It’s striking to say the least, particularly around sunset. One floor below you’ll find JOIA, the first London restaurant from two Michelin-starred Portuguese chef Henrique Sá Pessoa, serving up stunning food from his homeland; make sure to order the catch of the day, carved up at your table, the classic Spanish tortilla (which you might have seen oozing across your TikTok feed recently) and the braised Iberian pork cheeks. Boasting 164 rooms, the design of the hotel is plush, modern and curvaceous, packed with velvet furniture, golden fixtures and giant wall art with a welcome focus on work from local artists (not to mention the tranquil spa and well-equipped gym).

BOOK A STAY

The one with art deco interiors: The Town Hall Hotel

town hall hotel

It’s strange to think that Bethnal Green Town Hall, the grand neoclassical building that looms over Cambridge Heath Road in East London, laid vacant for quite so long. The council moved out in 1993 but, bar some starring roles in Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and Atonement , it wasn’t until 2010 that the sprawling space was opened to the public again in the form of a five-star hotel.

The art deco interior has been largely maintained – a green and white marble staircase greets you as you enter the reception and, like so many British civic buildings that cropped up in the early century and ultimately aged out of use, there’s an interesting balance of the majestic and the everyday in its design. The rooms – there are 96, though only 12 are double rooms and the rest are suites, studios and apartments – are bathed in natural light thanks to the high windows, with innovative layouts that set the hotel apart from competition and serve as a constant reminder of the building’s former life – the most striking room, by far, is the grand triple-height De Montfort Suite, with its arched windows, stained-glass panelling and abundance of space. Then there’s the heated indoor pool, a rarity for luxury London hotels, and an in-house restaurant, too.

The one with the mind-blowing suites: The Dorchester

In London, there are few more extravagant places to rest your head than The Dorchester. And anyone who has the historic Park Lane hotel on their bucket list will be glad to know that a recent renovation – its first since 1988, designed to bring a "contemporary edge" to proceedings – has done nothing to dampen The Dorchester’s 1930s-inflected opulence.

The revamp was spearheaded by Pierre-Yves Rochon, the man behind The Savoy and the Four Seasons George V in Paris, alongside Swedish designer Martin Brudnizki. The guest rooms and spacious suites have enjoyed a refresh, ditto the garden, forecourt, lobby and adjoining The Promenade lounge. Work has also been completed on the Vesper Bar, to go alongside the recently opened Artists’ Bar.

It's decadent stuff. But sometimes, when you’re staying at a place at this level, it’s the little things that make the biggest impression (we are, of course, talking about the little ribbon that’s tied around your charging cables during turndown service).

Tradition is the order of the day, but new-fangled technology has its place – from the Dyson hairdryers in the bedrooms to vibroacoustic wellness technology in the spa (if you're wondering what that means, it's basically a high-tech combination of massaging and music that promises to reduce stress).

Then there’s the delicious food. On the first floor, The Grill by Tom Booton, formerly head chef at The Westbury, is an atmospheric eatery where innovative dishes (cod doughnuts, anyone?) meet perfectly cooked classics. And the steak is amongst the best you'll have in London, grilled on a Big Green Egg barbecue that you can sea from the dining room.

Once you're done, it’s time to retire to the Artists' or Vesper bar. Both are great choices. The latter boasts a new cocktail menu inspired by cherished memories of Dorchester staff, choosing scents and flavours that are evocative of seaside holidays, childhood birthday parties, and antique libraries. It's a nice touch from a hotel that, everywhere you look, entwines the future and the past.

The one with the standout restaurant: The Londoner

best hotels london

Unless you're an M&M's super fan or aim to keep the film industry alive via £20 cinema tickets, it's hard to have a good time in Leicester Square. But! After devouring the lobster linguine at Whitcomb's restaurant, enjoying a cocktail in the rooftop bar that looms eight floors above it and retiring to a comfy bed in the glassy, 350-room hotel that seperates them, we're here to tell you: it's possible. The Londoner opened in October 2021 – a few months after the end of lockdown – labelling itself as the “world's first super boutique hotel”, with six eateries/bars, one subterranean spa, a private ‘Residence’ for guests as well as a ballroom and astounding views of the city/the Esquire office (hello! Close your curtains!).

In the suite that we visited – with its bright, stylish furnishings, frequent nods to Theatreland (opera glasses, anyone?) and yes, okay, sorry-to-go-there-but-it-truly-is-phenomenal, heated toilet seat – the London Eye acts as your night light. Still, the view is best enjoyed with a Japanese-inspired cocktail in hand at 8, the aforementioned rooftop bar, and the subsequent hangover is best treated at The Retreat wellness space, with its poolside cabanas and tranquil hydropool. But back to the lobster linguine. To say that hotel restaurants are hit-and-miss would be an understatement, but the Mediterranean seafood dishes at Whitcomb’s are a triumph, and worth the trip alone.

The one with an unbeatable location: ME London

best hotels in london

It's hard to imagine a slicker all-round package for a one-night weekend stay than the Foster & Partners-designed ME hotel in the old Marconi building at one end of the Aldwych opposite Waterloo Bridge. From the moment you arrive in the reception area which features an impressive 30 metre atrium, it's hard not to feel as if you have docked onto a luxury space station. The minimalist and monochrome rooms are cleverly kitted out and include various light settings which only add to the sci-fi feel. Upstairs is a very cool terrace which serves brunch during the day and becomes a destination bar by night.

The STK steak restaurant is glamorous and buzzy, while the in-house Italian is a little more laid-back. Oh, and did we mention the location that perfectly straddles East and West, and is within throwing distance of a post-checkout stroll along the Thames or shopping trip to Covent Garden. A booking you won't regret.

The one for relaxation: Pan Pacific London

best hotels in london

A mere stone’s throw from Liverpool Street Station, amidst all the swinging briefcases and beer-swilling commuters, sits an unexpected oasis of calm. You’ll get the vibe as soon as you look up to see swimmers perched up at the Pan Pacific’s 18.5m infinity pool: this is a hotel to relax in.

The neutral tones and soft interiors, aided by an abundance of natural light, immediately make you feel at ease, but that’s the least of it. Beyond the aforementioned swimming spot, loungers and accompanying spa sessions, you’ll have the chance to take part in the hotel’s new innovative Rest, Recharge and Rejuvenate sleep program.

The big attraction is the revolutionary Ooler Sleep System, which you can use to heat up each side of the bed to different temperatures (underneath a Mela weight blanket, for good measure.) Then there’s the Pañpuri aromatherapy oils, to ensure you’re properly loosened up. If you want the meditative calm of a spa getaway but still want to be surrounded by the buzz of the capital, then this is a top choice.

The one with the unforgettable rooms: Blakes

best hotels in london

This magnificent 5 star Kensington boutique can lay claim to being perhaps London's most stylish hotel for numerous reasons - from the Victorian town house exterior to the gorgeous bar area - but it is the rooms that really stand out. Originally established by the celebrated designer Anouska Hempel, each one is the essence of unfussy sophistication full of delightful details. Not for nothing is Blakes a cult choice among many of the capital's visiting artists and designers.

Food-wise you're onto a winner too. The restaurant, freshly renovated as of last summer, aims to conjure up the interior of 'a beautiful old fashioned steamer sailing up the Bosphorus'. Quite how accurate that is we're not sure, but the contemporary, Mediterranean-influenced menu attracts non-guests from all around the city for good reason (we recommend the grilled octopus and lobster paccheri pasta) - intimate and cheerful yet glamorous, it is one of the best dining spaces in London.

The one with the cheese: No. 10 Manchester Street

best hotels in london

From its glorious West London red brick façade through to its smart, chic rooms and excellent in-house restaurant, No. Ten Manchester Street is a classic example of a four star hotel that feels by and large like a five star. Throw in one of the best locations imaginable for a relaxed exploration of the city away from the chaotic tourist beats of Trafalgar Square et al, and you’ve got a great option for any weekend stay.

Even more so, at the moment. The hotel has rustled up a package deal in which guests can enjoy a two-night stay in an executive room that includes an experience at nearby cheese mecca La Fromagerie. The small, charming restaurant is a perfect romantic spot to dip some charcuterie and potato in a classic Fondue Savoyarde – washed down with a crisp Chignin Vers les Alpes. It’s an Alpine treat, only with no mountains outside. Unless you decide to climb the Tower of London afterwards, we suppose. Hurry, though: the £315 package ends this year.

The one for serious shoppers: The Gantry

the gantry

If you like to shop, this is by far the best (and nearest) place you can drop. Situated just around the corner from the UK’s biggest shopping centre Westfield Stratford City, The Gantry’s sleek, dark, and lightly industrial interiors make it the ideal place to unwind. The thoroughly modern hotel is kitted out with smart TVs and waterfall showers, while floor-to-ceiling windows allow incredible views of the surrounding skyscrapers.

The jewel in the hotel’s (mid-century modern) crown, however, is the Union Social terrace, complete with comfy armchairs and fire pits that allow you to eat and drink while watching the sun sink behind the skyline. A Sicilian chef heads up the hotel’s Union Social restaurant, which serves an abundance of pasta and fish dishes, as well as salads and small plates. The hotel even has a set menu for fans attending the nearby ABBA Voyage concert in the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park (yes, Swedish meatballs are on the menu).

The one with the good lighting: Nobu Hotel, Shoreditch

best hotels in london

You could convince us to book a stay at just about any hotel with the suggestion that Robert De Niro might, maybe, almost-definitely-not-but-who-knows, be checking in too. The American actor co-founded Nobu in 1994; first as a Japanese-Peruvian restaurant in New York with celebrity chef Nobuyuki “Nobu” Matsuhisa and film producer Meir Teper, then as eight luxury hotels spread across five continents (and 38 more restaurants for good measure.) What better chance to hand him your game changing screenplay (“ Goodfellas in space”)?

But Nobu has a lot more going for it than the occasional sight of De Niro picking at some black cod. London’s original outpost landed in Mayfair in 1997, but it took twenty years until a hotel would arrive in the capital – first in Shoreditch, then another in Portman Square, during the uncertain days of lockdown. The latter is inspired by the pale wood Japanese minimalism of the since-closed Berkeley Street restaurant, while the 164-room East London location, a former multi-story car park, is a characteristically edgier offering. Brutalist-inspired concrete abounds; an orthogonal series of rooms recline over Willow Street, metal fixtures jutting out of the building’s façade. The dark wood suites are beautiful and spacious, the standard rooms tastefully designed. It recently enjoyed the addition of two skyline suites and a private rooftop terrace.

When it comes to grabbing dinner at the restaurant, let the waiter take the lead on menu choices (it’s a big one, and they’ll make sure you get a taste of the classics). Just rest easy... and leave Robert De Niro alone.

The one with the atrium: The Landmark London

the landmark london best hotels

In a city not exactly short on impressive dining spaces, the restaurant at The Landmark London still manages to be breathtaking. Positioned beneath an eight-storey glass roof and lined with palm trees and balconies, the effect is feeling like you're in an exotic outdoor plaza in sunny climes rather than a 5 star hotel a stone's throw from Baker Street.

Luckily, the food matches the setting, with sumptuous modern-European cuisine served by night and one of the best breakfasts in the city come morning. The rooms, too, are delightful: tasteful and spacious.

The Landmark London is charmingly old-fashioned (afternoon tea is still a cornerstone of its appeal, as is the slightly chintzy decor), a quality that extends to a quietly luxurious atmosphere and impeccably attentive staff.

The one that stands tall: The Stratford

best hotels in london

Walk out of Stratford International Station, look up, up and up again, and you’ll be met with one of London’s most unique skyscrapers: the Manhattan Loft Gardens. Opened in the summer of 2019 and dreamed up by the architects behind the Burj Khalifa and One World Trade Centre, this double-cantilevered tower is sliced open by gravity-defying sky gardens and features both apartments and a hotel, which is all part of an ambitious plan to create a ‘vertical community’ in the skyline of the rejuvenated postcode.

The hotel is called The Stratford, and it occupies the first seven floors of the building. And while you’d expect the glass-panelled drama to follow you inside, things become far more calming as soon as you enter. Danish design studio Space Copenhagen, who were responsible for the first Noma restaurant, have given the interior an airy Scandinavian feel, with high ceilings, mid-century furnishings and earthy tones throughout. The impressive rooms are just as understatedly luxurious and soothing, with stone bathrooms, soft bedrooms and floor-to-ceiling windows – which means plenty of great natural lighting for all those braggy Instagram photos you’re bound to take.

In terms of food options, there’s the much-raved-about Allegra restaurant on the seventh floor and Kitchen E20 by the entrance. The latter is overseen by Head Chef Josh Deacon (formerly of the Rail House Café), who arrived after lockdown and has crafted a modern British menu with an Australasian influence. Like everything else at The Stratford, it is unpretentious and impressive. Then there’s the sky terrace on the seventh floor – well worth the entry price alone.

The one with the rooftop bar: Amano

amano

It’s always a good idea to have a rooftop bar in your back pocket, and there are few better in London’s Theatre Land than the one perched atop Amano, a former office block on the corner of Covent Garden’s Russell Street that has been transformed into a 141-room hotel. Take the elevator up to the seventh floor, walk past a long, dimly lit lounge full of velvet booths and expertly crafted cocktails, and you’ll find an outdoor terrace overlooking South Bank and beyond. As scenic nightcap spots go, it’s pretty spectacular.

There are plenty of grand old hotels nearby; plenty of pricey boltholes that offer spa facilities and the like, but Amano keeps things affordable by trimming the fat. This is a refreshingly understated offering, designed to be the perfect London launchpad for a trip where you send your step-counter into overdrive. The rooms are split into four types – cosy, comfy, roomy and "goldy" (including a golden bathtub) – all design-led but unfussy, with welcome flourishes. The ground-floor restaurant, Penelope’s, is a different kettle of fish altogether – a party spot serving Israeli-Spanish fusion, with DJ sets throughout the weekend.

The one with the must-have tasting menu: St. James Hotel

best hotels

If you’re looking for luxury, why stay anywhere but the most expensive square on the Monopoly board? Situated in the aorta of Mayfair, St. James is a five-star boutique hotel with classic British charm: it’s impossible not to feel like an old-school aristocrat when walking up its red-carpeted stone steps. The hotel is small enough that service feels personalised and attentive, and with Buckingham Palace just a ten-minute walk away, this is the perfect place to gain royal pretensions for a weekend.

Having the king for a neighbour is one thing, but on-site Michelin star restaurant Seven Park Place is the hotel’s real selling point. Head chef William Drabble serves up seasonal French menus – the £140 Gourmand tasting menu is an unmissable experience where you can sample everything from scallops to pheasant to Baron Bigod brie, all served in a light, bright dining room.

The one with the best views: Shangri-La

best hotels in london

The real reason to pick the Shangri-La over any other luxury hotel in London is, of course, the breathtaking views. Located at the top of The Shard – the capital's tallest (and increasingly iconic) structure – the whole of the city is on display, whether you're eating, swimming or propped up on your bed. Watching the light change in the sky as London sleeps, wakes, works and plays is really something special. Luckily, the hotel and its staff do not rest on their laurels as a result of the Shangri-La's huge advantage – the rooms are immaculate, the European-Asian food and inventive cocktails superb (at TĪNG and GŎNG respectively) and the indoor pool at (almost) the very top is a small slice of heaven. Then even run regular Cultural Salon events too – the first was with designer Paul Smith, with many more exciting speakers planned for the year ahead.

The one with the hidden secrets: Batty Langley's

best hotels in london

It's hard to know where to begin describing this boutique hotel in Shoreditch, so let us start by listing some things it is not: modern, sleek, minimalist, boring. Instead, it's a slightly bonkers, absolutely beautifully designed and fantastically original Downton Abbey -esque bolthole situated (somewhat incongruously) on the cusp of East London's trendiest quarters. Full of books, fireplaces and ornate touches, it bucks every contemporary trend for hotels and is all the better for it.

There is no restaurant at Batty Langleys (although a wonderfully cosy and well-stocked honesty bar is free to use and they will deliver an A+ bacon sandwich to your room for breakfast), meaning most of the focus has been put onto the rooms. They are uniformly stunning - lavishing appointed with cheeky and surprising design details (one has a toilet accessible via hidden door in the book case). It really is like stepping into another era, and yet the feel is fun, not stuffy. For an imaginative choice in a great part of town, look no further.

The one that takes you by surprise: The Mandrake

This five-star boutique hotel might sit minutes from Oxford Street, but The Mandrake mercifully feels like a world away from that long drag of American candy stores and closing down sales. It sits inconspicuously on Newburgh Street, easily missed if not for the waiting doorman and the feathered eye that looms above the entrance. A quiet locale gives way to a dark, club-like lobby that continues into the slim bar and around to Yopo, the Latin-American fusion restaurant. The food is very good, particularly the crudo, and the music isn’t as conversation-crushing as you might fear. There’s a open-air courtyard too, boasting palm trees and nice tiles and a bunch of other stuff that will help you forget that you’re within axe-throwing distance of an axe-throwing bar; walk out and look up, and you’ll find its surrounded by a beautiful three-story hanging garden, divided by wooden terraces that host most of the hotel’s 34 diminutive but distinctively designed rooms, as well as a greenhouse. From the library to the bar, it’s a social hotel at heart.

The beautiful one: 11 Cadogan Gardens

best hotels in london

From the entrance onwards, it is clear that a visit to 11 Cadogan is a visit to one of London's most aesthetically pleasing boutique hotels. Inside the sumptuous drawing room, library and terrace only enhance this impression, as do the glorious staircases. Classically British in design, you'll fall for the place right away - and that's before you've even reached the stunning bedrooms - feeling for all the world like the head of an important Victorian townhouse. If you're looking to explore Chelsea and Knightsbridge, you won't find a more relaxing and satisfying base than this.

The one with the whisky: Athenaeum

best hotels in london

This family-run 5-star hotel in Mayfair is as charming and perfectly located a spot as you could wish for, with one significant upperhand over most its rivals. 270 bottles decorate their specially appointed whisky bar, manned by an expert Sommerlier. Walk in an amateur, leave an expert in the greatest drink of them all, and what foods to pair it with.

The one with the history: The Savoy

best hotels in london

The name alone conjures the height of British glamour, as it has more or less since the doors first opened in 1889 when it was London's first and only luxury hotel. Today, the rich history of The Savoy sits comfortably alongside first class modern service and facilities – the art deco of the famous American Bar is joined by the contemporary luxury of the Beaufort Bar, and a traditional roast – still one of the best in town – is available, besides the best in modern seafood at Kaspars. Decades on, The Savoy is still among the very best places to stay in town, and no where else can match it for basking in the sense of historic splendour, and thinking of the innumerable famous faces who have passed through it before you.

The one the royals love: The Ritz

best hotels in london

The name of this hotel is so tied up in our idea of luxury and British history, it can be hard to believe it actually exists. That sense of unreality is only heightened by actually walking through the doors, where you enter another, far more refined world in which every corner of the building is lavishly appointed and the staff - understandably - ooze with pleasure at where they work. Not for nothing is the Ritz where the royal family prefer to stay: within seconds you feel like royalty, too.

The stunning dining areas - topped by the main restaurant which ranks among the grandest in London - serve peerless British fare, while our favourite spot is definitely The Rivoli, a small bar made up of conspiratorial hubs and corners where the cocktails hit the sweet spot (so often missed in London) between classic and inventive. The rooms are as you'd expect: huge and traditionally glamourous. The Ritz is in one of the best posts in London. Plus there's plenty of shopping options nearby – and if the stay has already put a big dent in your bank account, then you can bypass Mayfair for the relative affordability of Soho, which hosts many of our favourite menswear brands (Sunspel, Oliver Spencer, Universal Works) as well as brilliant restaurants and historic pubs (The Coach & Horses on Greek Street is a particular highlight, ditto The French House on Dean Street).

You Won’t Want to Miss August’s Rare Super Blue Moon. Here’s How and When You Can See It

O n the heels of  the exciting Perseid meteor shower, the public will be graced with another thrilling night sky moment.

On Monday evening, you’ll have more of a reason than usual to gaze up at the sky, as August’s rare super blue moon will take center stage for the pleasure of photographers, astronomers, and casual viewers.

Here's what to know about the celestial event:

What is a super blue moon?

A super blue moon is simultaneously a full moon, blue moon, and a super moon.

The first of these three is pretty well known to us: a phase in the lunar cycle in which the Earth, sun, and moon are aligned with the Earth in the middle, so the moon is fully illuminated on Earth.

A blue moon is not about the color of the moon, but instead the frequency of the full moon. There are two definitions of a blue moon—the first describes when there are two full moons in a single month. Since the moon’s cycle is 29.5 days, and our average calendar month is 30-31 days, it is incredibly rare to have two full moons in one single month, but it is possible, happening every two to three years, according to NASA. Around 3% of full moons are blue moons.

There are also seasonal blue moons, in which a calendar season contains four full moons instead of the usual three, and the blue moon is the third of the four full moons. August’s full moon is of this variety. The next seasonal blue moon is expected in May 2027.

The super moon part refers to the moon's orbit, which brings it slightly closer to Earth this month, making it appear bigger and brighter. This occurs since the moon’s orbit around the Earth is elliptical instead of just a circle, and thus there are times when the moon is further and closer to our planet.

During the moon’s closest approach to Earth, it can appear approximately 14% larger and shine 30% brighter than when at its farthest point in the orbit. This will be the first of four consecutive super moons this year, and it is less rare than the blue moon, occurring three or four times a year.

August’s full moon is often called the Sturgeon moon , dubbed by the Algonquin Native American tribe living in the Great Lakes area and throughout what is now known as the northeastern United States. They named the full moon after sturgeons—a type of large fish—which were most plentiful in the lakes during the month of August.

How and when can you see August’s super blue moon?

The full moon's peak will occur on Monday afternoon, according to NASA , at 2:26 p.m. EDT and 11:26 a.m. PT. It will appear for three days, from Sunday morning until early Wednesday morning.

Though the moon will be visible to the naked eye, Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff, Ariz., says that telescope and binocular viewers will be able to see even more detail on the lunar surface than usual.

How rare is a super blue moon?

According to NASA, the combination of the super moon and the blue moon is rare, and the time between their occurrences is quite “irregular” and could be as much as 20 years, with 10 years between the average.

Though we had a super blue moon somewhat recently, in August 2023, NASA predicts the next super blue moons will occur in January and March 2037. All the more reason to make sure you don’t miss 2024’s offering.
