Premier regional tourism conference heading to the Rocket City

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

March 11, 2020

(Huntsville, AL) – This week in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, it was announced that Huntsville will have the honor of hosting one of the premier tourism industry events in the South – Southeast Tourism Society’s Domestic Showcase. The Domestic Showcase conference is one of the largest industry marketplace events of its kind, bringing together over 600 tourism professionals, tour operators, and destination marketing organizations throughout the South. Hosting an event of this magnitude will not only bring a positive impact on the local economy, but a level of exposure that is extremely beneficial for Huntsville/Madison County, North Alabama, and the state of Alabama as a whole.

Domestic Showcase will be held in Huntsville, February 8-11, 2021, and will be Huntsville’s first time serving as the host destination. Next year’s event will also mark the first year the conference will be hosted by the Southeast Tourism Society, following a change in leadership announced in 2019 from the convention’s original host organization, Travel South USA. Travel South USA began the first regional, domestic, computerized marketplace in 1983 to bring more group travel business to the Southern states, since expanding to include travel media representatives, state tourism offices, and other travel and tourism entities.

The Southeast Tourism Society was established in 1983, and serves as a nonprofit dedicated to the promotion and development of tourism throughout the Southeast United States.

“We are thrilled to host the 2021 Domestic Showcase. We look forward to being the first host city under the new guidance of our partners at the Southeast Tourism Society, and we appreciate the work Travel South USA has done to make this conference what it is today,” said Judy Ryals, President/CEO for the Huntsville/Madison County Convention & Visitors Bureau (CVB). “Domestic Showcase is a first-rate conference for our industry, and they’ll have a first-rate experience to match when they visit the Rocket City.”

A team of Huntsville/Madison County and Alabama representatives, including Ryals, CVB Vice President of Tourism Jennifer Moore, Executive Vice President Charles Winters, Tourism Sales Manager Pam Williams, Alabama Tourism Director Lee Sentell, Alabama Mountain Lakes Tourist Association President/CEO Tami Reist, and Grey Brennan, Deputy Director for the Alabama Tourism Department, were in attendance for this year’s Domestic Showcase to make the 2021 announcement.

“Domestic Showcase is one of the premier events of our industry, and we look forward to welcoming them in 2021,” said Lee Sentell, Alabama Tourism Director. “Hosting events of this stature highlights Alabama’s role as a leader in tourism in the Southeast, and we hope attendees will take advantage of all that we have to offer during their time here.”

The announcement this morning was accompanied by a video designed to give this year’s attendees a preview of what they can expect to experience in the Rocket City.

STS Chooses Jackson For 2023 Conference

September 12, 2022

The Southeastern Tourism Society (STS) announced at their Connections 2022 annual meeting held in Concord, North Carolina, that Jackson, Mississippi, will be the site for Connections 2023. “We are so excited to bring STS Connections to Jackson in September 2023,” said Suzanne Moon, VP of Operations for STS. “We look forward to showing the members the great museums, dining and adventures to enjoy in the area. We know the city of Jackson and the state of Mississippi will make sure it will be a conference for all to remember and to celebrate the 40th anniversary of STS.” The selection committee traveled to Jackson for a site visit last month and expressed how impressed they were with the city’s offerings. Additionally, they were overwhelmed with warm hospitality. These two elements coupled together sealed the deal. Each year, travel and tourism experts, visionaries and curators come together from the thirteen states and the District of Columbia to share industry insights. It’s an opportunity to learn, network, and celebrate tourism. “I am extremely proud of the success of our Sales Team. Securing one of the largest and most respected regional tourism promotional organizations is an honor for the City With Soul, said Dr. Rickey Thigpen, President & CEO of Visit Jackson.  “Education, advocacy, recognition and networking are the focus of the STS Connections Conference. Visit Jackson shares that value system and is elated to welcome the 40h Anniversary conference to Mississippi’s capital city in September 2023. We, along with our strategic partner, Visit Mississippi, will ensure that we demonstrate Southern Hospitality like never before.” About STS On September 14, 1983, a small group of industry leaders from the Southeast gathered for the purpose of organizing the Southeast Tourism Society (STS). Those charter members shared the mutual belief that regional promotion of tourism, via a partnership between states, would create a powerful marketing alliance unparalleled throughout our country. More than 39 years later, their vision continues as STS is an established leader amongst tourism organizations.

STS Brings Educational Components to Domestic Showcase

VIRGINIA BEACH, Virginia — Monica Smith knew she wanted to add an educational component to the Southeast Tourism Society’s (STS) Domestic Showcase in 2022; she just had to figure out how to build it into the schedule. Smith and her staff came up with the idea of offering the sessions at the meeting’s breakfasts, and a new tradition was born.

“We’re getting great feedback, and I expect to do it again next year,” said Smith, president and CEO of STS. “Those sessions really proved to be a great start to the day for our early-bird delegates who like to get up and get going.”

The STS Domestic Showcase was held February 13–15 in Virginia Beach, Virginia, and it was the first edition of the conference and marketplace delivered by STS. The Virginia Tourism Corporation and Virginia Beach Convention and Visitors Bureau were major partners in arranging for the first in-person Domestic Showcase in two years.

southeast tourism conference

“Our total attendance was 375 delegates and that included 75 buyers and 41 journalists,” said Smith. “The remainder were suppliers and service providers, and that number includes our newest invitees, our federal tourism partners from the U.S. Corps of Engineers, the National Parks and the U.S. Forest Service.”

Breakfast seminar sessions included an exclusive journalist breakfast with Captain Chris Ludford of Diversified Marine Services, who shared his experiences with oyster farming tours; a panel discussion on the future of experiential tourism moderated by Douglas Quinby of Arival, featuring panelists Brian Scullin of TUI Musement, Jennifer Cecil of Explore Charleston, and Eddie Lutz of the Ark Experience and Creation Museum; and a presentation by Cheryl Hargrove of Hargrove International on educational travel and cultural heritage tourism.

Marketplace appointments were held for two full days between travel destinations and travel buyers. Evening events were held at Virginia’s Military Aviation Museum, where delegates enjoyed a fascinating collection of historic planes, plus televised coverage of the Super Bowl; and at the Virginia Aquarium and Marine Science Center, where guests dined on fresh seafood and observed sharks, saltwater fish and other maritime wildlife.

The Group Travel Leader hosted a final night signature event with co-sponsors Heaven Hill Distillery and James B. Beam Distilling Company, where guests enjoyed a shuffleboard tournament and live music at Beachside Social.

“In the future, I can see us adding a day to Showcase on the front end for sales and marketing training for delegates who may be new to the industry,” said Smith. “Educational programming is a hallmark of ours, and I think we’re off to a great start.”

At the event’s closing luncheon, hosted by the Virginia Art Festival, which brought the Virginia International Tattoo for an overwhelming musical performance, Smith thanked numerous supporters who helped to make the inaugural event a success. In addition to the Virginia Tourism Corporation and the Virginia Beach CVB, she also credited her staff and the “transition committee” of volunteers from various states and cities who helped create the first STS Domestic Showcase.

STS Domestic Showcase in 2023 takes place in Huntsville, Alabama, April 17–20.

Florida Oceanographic Ocean EcoCenter has been named the Escape to the Southeast Travel Attraction of the Year for 2022. Located on Hutchinson Island, this 57-acre marine life nature center was built to inspire the environmental stewardship of Florida’s coastal ecosystems through three key pillars: education, research, and advocacy. Video snippets circulating on Russian-language Telegram channels show a series of flashes on the horizon of a cloudy night sky, momentarily turning the sky a number of different colors. In a clip shared by Russian outlet MSK1.ru, smoke can be seen rising from a building during the flashes lighting up the scene.

Newsweek was unable to independently verify the details of the video clips, including when and where it was filmed. The Russian Ministry of Emergency situations has been contacted via email.

Several Russian Telegram accounts said early on Thursday that residents of southern Moscow reported an explosion and a fire breaking out at an electrical substation in the Leninsky district, southeast of central Moscow.

Local authorities in the Leninsky district told Russian outlet RBC that the explosion had happened in the village of Molokovo. "All vital facilities are operating as normal," Leninsky district officials told the outlet.

The incident at the substation in Molokovo took place just before 2 a.m. local time, MSK1.ru reported.

Messages published by the ASTRA Telegram account, run by independent Russian journalists, appear to show residents close to the substation panicking as they question the bright flashes in the sky. One local resident describes seeing the bright light before losing access to electricity, with another calling the incident a "nightmare."

More than 10 villages and towns in the southeast of Moscow lost access to electricity, the ASTRA Telegram account also reported. The town of Lytkarino to the southeast of Moscow, lost electricity, wrote the eastern European-based independent outlet, Meduza.

Outages were reported in the southern Domodedovo area of the city, according to another Russian outlet, as well as power failures in western Moscow. Electricity was then restored to the areas, the Strana.ua outlet reported.

The cause of the reported explosion is not known. A Telegram account aggregating news for the Lytkarino area described the incident as "an ordinary accident at a substation."

The MSK1.ru outlet quoted a local resident who speculated that a drone may have been responsible for the explosion, but no other Russian source reported this as a possible cause.

Ukraine has repeatedly targeted Moscow with long-range aerial drones in recent months, including a dramatic wave of strikes in late May.

On Sunday, Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said the region's air defense systems had intercepted an aerial drone over the city of Elektrostal, to the east of Moscow. No damage or casualties were reported, he said.

The previous day, Russian air defenses detected and shot down another drone flying over the Bogorodsky district, northeast of central Moscow, Sobyanin said.

There is currently no evidence that an aerial drone was responsible for the reported overnight explosion at the electrical substation in southern Moscow.
