Nijhum Dwip the silent island

A deer sanctuary, nijhum dwip.

Nijhum Dwip is a natural and planted mangrove forest and deer sanctuary in the Bay of Bengal's Noakhali District, as well as a portion of Hatia Island in the Jahajmara Range. Nijhum Dwip was declared a national park in April 2001, but it is yet to be a reserved forest. This National Park encompasses 16,352 ha of land area, including Domar Char, Char Kukri-Mukri, and some other small islands. A trip to Nijhum Dwip island is ideal for tourists who love nature and serenity. This palace is a birdwatcher's paradise during the winter season (October to March).

A brave settler named; Osma; established the first settlement with his buffalo and cattle at this place. Initially, this island was known as Char Osman. Later, the government changed the name to Nijhum Dwip, but it was still referred to as Osman in documents and locally. The name “Nijhum Dwip“ was given by former Minister Amirul Islam Kalam in 1975 because of its isolation and mild nature.

Only four pairs of deer were brought from the Sundarban forest to released at Nijhum Dwip forests back in 1978. In a favourable atmosphere to breeding, the number has risen to over 15,000, causing a shortage of food for survival during dry seasons. There is no tiger in the Nijhum Dwip Mangrove forest for a natural balance of deer population. The senior forest officials and wildlife experts witnessed that the deer population in the island’s forest has already reached an imbalance compared to the number of deers in the Sundarbans.

Wintering ground of internationally significant migratory waterbirds

This tiny island is essential as the wintering ground of internationally significant migratory waterbirds, including various globally threatened species. Regularly hosts Nordmann's Greenshank, critically endangered Spoon-billed Sandpiper, and it is the world's prominent wintering place for over 50% of the world population of globally endangered Indian Skimmer. Nijhum Dwip National Park shields the tidal grasslands and planted mangrove forest. Resident Chital Horin or Spotted Deers are accreting the char areas and coastal waters. The vast sand bars, inter-tidal mudflats and shallow waters are of utmost importance to 81 waterbird species.

About 171 species of birds, including several threatened ones and 11 species of mammals, have found their home here. Domar char is home for half the year to quite some shorebirds. The coastal waters adjacent to or within the National Park are also essential fisheries and an important spawning ground for Hilsha, the national fish of Bangladesh.

This beautiful mangrove Park is also home to about 30000 marginal people, mainly dependent on fishing, grazing and other natural resources. Life around this island is highly vulnerable to cyclones and other natural disasters.

This small island sits at the Intersection of the Meghna River and the Bay of Bengal. Without any protection/ embankments, the wildlife is also highly vulnerable to high tides from the Bay of bengal during the monsoon season. Migrating people did not settle here until 1970, but the population has reached around 30,000 now. The increasing human population on the island has also become a threat to the wildlife here.

Nijhum Dwip National Park yet to be an attractive tourist destination due to a lack of good communication infrastructure, tourism awareness within the local community, insufficient proper accommodation and restaurant facilities. This region has a high potential for its rich floral and faunal diversity, beautiful forest, endless grassy shoreline, narrow creeks within the forests, beaches alongside the local life and culture. The natural beauty of this forest has been enriched by deer, wild boars, monkeys, wild buffaloes, fishing cats, various snakes, tortoises, turtles, Bengal monitor lizard, black lizard, yellow monitor, oriental small-clawed otters, clawless otters and a vast number of resident and migratory winter birds. A nature lover or a bird watcher would find this island a little paradise for few days.

We have very good knowledge from experience and network with the local community to design an excellent adventurous excursion, as well as to make your trip memorable to this beautiful island.

By Road from Dhaka/ Chittagong:

How to get there:.

There is some local bus service between Dhaka/ Chittagong and Noakhali districts by road from Saydabad and Mirpur. Once you have reached the Noakhali Main bus terminal, you should go to the Sonapur bus stand by local transport (CNG/Auto Rickshaw). There is some public bus from here to Chairman Ghat Bus Station. It is about 10 minutes by auto rickshaw to Chairman Ghat (River Station) or Noakhali - Hatia Ferry Terminal. Here you should embark on a passenger ferry or Trawlar to cross the river to Hatia Boat Terminal and avail local transport (TukTuk/ Old Baby Taxi) through inland 3 hours bad road journey to Nijhum Dwip Boat Ghat (Terminal) to avail a passenger trawler to cross the river and reach Bondor Tilla Ghat (Ferry Terminal) in Nijhoom Dwip. You can also take a fishing trawler from Hatia Ferry Terminal to Nijhoom Dwip all the way, but this trawler must be reserved earlier, which is quite expensive for a small group.

By water transport from Dhaka:

There is also good overnight water transportation between Dhaka to Hatia, which is even more comfortable, relaxing and recommended. MV Tafsir and MV Farhan leaves (0) days a week from sadarghat at 4:30PM for Hatia. The ship arrives at Hatia by the following morning between 6 am to 9 am, depending on the tide and weather situation of the rivers on the way.

Cabins on The Launch:

VIP cabins are the most expensive and top-class cabins on either of the ships within an isolated Zone with a private bathroom and balcony. Passengers of VIP class gets the best services on the ship. Travellers are advised to reserve a few weeks prior to the journey date because each of the ships has only 4-6 cabins, which are always in high demand. There are AC and non AC single and double cabins with sharing bathroom facilities, price ranging from 1500 taka to 2500 taka. Upon arrival at Hatia Ferry Terminal, you can use road or water transport to Nijhum Dwip, as per mentioned above.

Places to Stay:

There are no high standard or AC hotels in Nijhum Dwip yet. All hotels are quite basic accommodation and poor services and do not have any restaurant facilities. You always have to depend on the local outdoor restaurant for your all meals, which can be a bit spicy.

Here are the most known and used hotel/ motels:

Abakash Parjatan; owned by the government and managed by local vendors. This hotel offers decent accommodation for visitors and is located closer to Namapara Bazar.

Nijhum Dwip Dreamland Resort:  A local ownership and management offer new rooms with low and high commod bathrooms. But very poor service.

Nijhum Dwip is not connected with the national electricity grids, so the power is always privately generated by the hotel’s own generators. Please check how often you get the electricity during you make the room reservation.

Things to do

  • Early morning or late afternoon boat trip through the creeks of National Park because the wildlife is usually active very early in the morning and late in the afternoon. (before you plan a morning or afternoon boat trip to the forest, speak to the boatman a day prior to check the tidal situation. You can only make the boat trip during the high tide)
  • Walking through the green grassland at the fringes of the national park.
  •  Afternoon walks around the western beach of the island to enjoy a beautiful sunset. Dispute the muddy beach for fresh swimming and beach activities.
  • A day trip to Domar char can be made by a reserved trawler.
  • Villagers are quite friendly and conservative, and you may see all women are disappearing/ hiding while any (man) tourist walks through the village. Female tourists are welcome to go inside of any house for any emergency or curiosity.
  • One must respect the local culture and customs while visiting the villages.
  • Rental Motorbike service always comes with a driver for inland and local Bazar excursions.
  • Child marriage is a very normal and alarming issue on this island. Overreact to this particular issue by a stranger may cause some unexpected trouble.

Eating Facilities

There are several local restaurants located in the village centre (Bazar) area of the island, and any local may pointing the restaurants. Sheraton Hotel (Restaurant) is the best option on this island out of all. The owner Altaf Kaka usually prepare specially ordered meals from home for special needs. Prior order is always necessary. Otherwise, trust your luck on whatever was prepared and whenever it comes. Altaf Kaka also delivers the cooked food at the hotels, be aware that the food will never come on time.

In the south of Bangladesh, a smattering of islands sits at the intersection of the Meghna river and the Bay of Bengal. The Silent Island is best known for its national park  with a significant spotted deer population. I was on a mission to find a green place where I could wander around and enjoy Bangladeshi village life, and on Nijhum Dwip, it was all too easy.

Note: If coming from Chittagong, there are also BIWTC steamers from there to Hatiya. According to this PDF from BIWTC , steamers leave Chittagong on Monday, Thursday, and Saturday at 9:00, and arrive in Hatiya at 15:30. Double check that in Chittagong — I’m not sure how old this document is.

Launch docked at Tomoroddi ghat

Launch boat from Dhaka to Hatiya

Hatiya is the closest “major” town to Nijhum Dwip, accessible by bus (for most of the way) and launch from Dhaka. Though buses are slightly faster, launches are smoother, cheaper, and more pleasurable .

Launches to Hatiya leave from Dhaka’s Sadarghat at 17:30. A single cabin costs 800 Tk , and floor tickets are 200 Tk . Tickets can only be purchased on the launch itself before departure; the launch arrived at the docks around 3 in the afternoon.

Note: I was told there is another launch in the very early morning (around 5:00), but I can’t confirm the time… and wasn’t willing to risk showing up at the crack of dawn just to find out no boat was going. Feel free to try yourself!

After sailing downstream overnight and stopping at Monpura island for an hour or so, the 17:30 launch arrives at Hatiya’s Tomruddin ghat somewhere between 6:30 and 8:30. The passenger crowd will have thinned by that point, so no need to fight to get off the launch.

The early morning motorbike ride from Tomruddin ghat was too gorgeous. If only my big camera wasn’t packed away!

Motorbikes and boats from Hatiya to Nijhum Dwip

Finding someone to get you on your way to Nijhum Dwip from the Tomruddin launch ghat is easy enough. Motorbike taxis and auto drivers lurk around the ghat, and will swarm you when you arrive.

Since I was traveling solo, I opted to take a motorbike taxi to the ferry ghat at the southern tip of Hatiya island. I paid 350 Tk for the journey, which was a bit longer than an hour. If you’re with several people—or don’t like the idea of sitting on a motorbike traveling on crappy roads with backpacks on for an hour—opt for an auto. The drivers were quoting me 1,000 Tk for the journey, which means it should probably be around 6-800 Tk.

The motorbike driver will take you to Moktaria ghat, where you can find wooden ferries to cross the final stretch of water. The ferries leave when full, and don’t worry about waiting long—you’d be surprised how many people want to cross! You’ll need to pay a 3 Tk fee to go onto the dock, and 20 Tk for the actual crossing.

… but filled up in a hot second once it was time to depart!

After a pleasant 15 minute boat ride across the water, it’s time to hop on your last motorbike or rickshaw. There are a few hotels scattered along the island road, such as Sheraton Hotel (not actually affiliated with Sheraton) and Nijhum Dreamland, but I decided to go all the way to the island’s southern side. The motorbike ride took about 20 minutes, and cost 100 Tk . The driver dropped me in the town, where I was basically claimed on sight by a hotel owner.

It’s also possible to get a boat from Tomoroddi ghat to Nijhum Dwip. Though I didn’t take one myself, I was told speed boats can take passengers for several hundred taka per head. The ride should take less than an hour.

If you speak a bit of Bangla, you can also try asking around to see if any fishing trawlers are heading to Nijhum Dwip. The journey will take a couple of hours, but it’ll be much more budget friendly than a speed boat.

Things to do in Nijhum Dwip

Admittedly, the island isn’t happening with hotspots and top things to do. My best advice is to just relax, enjoy the peace and quiet, and see where the road takes you.

Onwards to the “deep forest”!

Nijhum Dwip National Park

The island’s main draw. A forested sanctuary created to protect and encourage the local spotted deer population, you’ll need a boat to access the deepest parts of the forest.

I was quoted 2,000 Tk for a three hour sunset boat ride—time subject to the high tide—but eventually was charged 1,000 Tk since I was alone.  Though I wasn’t so impressed by the forest walk, the boat ride itself was lovely and worth the expense.

Ahoy little mateys!

If you don’t want to shell out for a boat, Soakali is a pretty area where the main road runs through the National Park, about 10 minutes’ cycling from the main town. I cycled through there in the early morning, and saw a herd of deer running across the road. Deer also occasionally wander through town in the early morning.

Nijhum Dwip has more than 20 km of beach. Head to the eastern part of the island—or, at least, not right by the main town—for less “touristic” beaches.

Nijhum Beach

A sandy area close to the town where most of the hotels are, it’s pleasantly white and clean compared to other South Asian beaches. Don’t expect aquamarine waters (the water was brown and uncomfortably warm when I visited in late March), but it’s pretty and a good place to watch the sun set.

Boat to islands around Nijhum Dwip

There are several small uninhabited islands around Nijhum Dwip accessible by boat. I didn’t visit any of them, but the boat man I used to visit the mangrove forest offered to take me to them on another day. Presumably the price of visiting the islands will be in line with boating to the deep forest, though ask around to make sure.

Hello, how do I acquire one of these?

Ship building

Though half constructed pirate-esque ships can be found all over the island, there’s an easily accessible yard next to Hotel Sohel and Nijhum Resort. Walk further down the path beyond the ship building area, and you’ll likely see more ship building along the waterway. When I visited in March, men were also drying and stamping down fish for chicken feed in the area.

Cycling or walking

Simple, but my favorite pastime. I sourced a bicycle for 200 Tk  per day (could probably be cheaper), and traversed the island’s few roads and paths. Though I could go further on a bike, you’d be fine just walking on the myriad paths through villages and on the beaches. The people in the villages are incredibly sweet and curious—and numerous—and I had too many invitations to people’s homes to say yes to them all.

Note that most of the paths are too bumpy or narrow to cycle on, and I saw some of the most spectacularly unusable roads I’ve ever encountered on Nijhum Dwip. I’d recommend hiring a bicycle just for one day, and walking around the other days.

A double room at Hotel Sohel similar to my own

Where to stay in Nijhum Dwip

Accommodations on the island are relatively basic. Note that the island does not have an electricity supply, so aside from lights running on solar power, you’ll have trouble charging your devices unless someone turns on a generator.

I stayed at Hotel Sohel (018631 50881), a shockingly pink tower across from Nijhum Resort ( view resort on map ). Though he spoke no English, the owner of the hotel was incredibly respectful and helpful during my stay. He treated me to tea and snacks in the evenings, and found me a bicycle to roam around the island.

A double room with balcony and attached bathroom can fetch 2,000 Tk/night in winter high season, but I bargained the room price down from 1,500 to 500 Tk per night.

There are other small hotels in the area, Nijhum Resort—which not really a resort—being the most notable. A few more cheapies can be found in the market area, though I can’t guarantee they’ll take foreigners.

If you want something more upmarket, Nijhum Dreamland will be on your lefthand side after you exit the town when driving away from the ferry ghat. Rooms there range from 2,000 Tk per night to 6,000 Tk per night with 24/7 generator.

Where to eat in Nijhum Dwip

Do not expect any mind blowing culinary experiences on the island. Food options are restricted to whatever the small hotels in the towns are serving up—think simple roti/porotha or rice combos—or whatever you ask your hotel to provide you.

Careful for those whose bellies aren’t yet accustomed to Bangladesh’s delicious hygiene standards. Hot food for dinner usually appears in the little restaurants around 20:00 or so. At other times, try not to look at the flies swarming over most of the food options, and seek out places that cover their food when not serving people. Ignorance is bliss.

Fish reigns supreme, and you’ll have an easier time finding fish or shrimp than other meats at lunchtime. Dinner is another story; after 20:30 or so, you can usually find beef, chicken, or local duck if you ask around. Vegetarians beware, a lot of the vegetable dishes have shrimp mixed in.

In case staying connected is a high priority for you (like it is for me!), know that the town area of Nijhum Dwip where you’ll likely stay is well connected.

My Grameenphone sim had full H or H+ in my hotel/in the town. I was also told that Robi Axiata and Airtel have coverage on the island. However, Banglalink has yet to cover the island, so prepare to disconnect if they’re your carrier.

Security in Nijhum Dwip

While staying in Nijhum Dwip, I was approached by the police inspector for the island, who was presumably called in by the hotel manager.

He came in to check up on me in the evenings, and actually posted two policemen in the room across from mine for extra security in the night. I’m not sure if this was because I was traveling as a solo female (a point of great distress to him) or because I was a foreigner.

It wasn’t a big issue in the end; he was mostly interested in making sure I didn’t stray far at night. His English was decent, and I ended up going into the mangrove forest with him and some of his colleagues.

A final note before you head off on your island adventure!

Nijhum Dwip is a remote island with a lot of tourism potential. Tourism can support remote communities, but it can also destroy them… and their environment. When you visit Nijhum Dwip, do your part to maintain its natural beauty and good relations between tourists and local people.

Here are some simple ways you can be a responsible tourist on Nijhum Dwip:

  • Dispose of your trash properly.  The most important! Do  not throw your wrappers and other waste on the ground or in the ocean—carry them with you and throw them away in a bin when you return to your hotel.
  • Be quiet in natural areas. Humans and animals should be able to coexist peacefully. The deer don’t want to hear groups of people screaming and shouting and playing music. Neither do I.
  • Don’t give pens, sweets, or money to local children. It encourages begging. Here’s more on why you shouldn’t give pens to children .
  • Talk with the local people. They are not simple animals to be ignored or used as tools; everyone on the island has their own story that we visitors can learn from.

In short: take care of the island so future generations can enjoy just like you.

Nijhum Dwip (নিঝুম দ্বীপ) – A Unique Eco-tourist Spot

Nijhum Dwip (Silent Island) is a small island in Noakhali District’s Hatiya Upazila. It is an island group that first appeared in the early 1950s. A herd of over 5000 spotted deer, monkeys, and a large number of mating birds that arrive in the winter months to enhance the beauty of this island are the major attractions. The government has designated this island as an eco-tourist destination.

Nijhum Dwip is home to a large population of migrating birds throughout the winter. The open, sunny terrain is perfect for the fisherman to utilize to dry their harvest from the sea. On occasion, lots of people build straw huts on the island to serve as temporary homes.

On the north side of the island, the Forest Department began an afforestation initiative in 1974 that would last twenty years. It has grown into a dense forest with a diversity of plant species over a nine-thousand-acre area. You can spot Keora frequently among the trees. Other species include Gewa, Kankra, Bain, Babul, Karamja, Pashur, and several others.

On April 8, 2001, the government designated 40,390 acres (16,345 hectares) of Jahajmara range forest, comprising 9,550 acres (3,865 ha) of forest area on Nijhum Dwip, as a National Park for the conservation and promotion of the forest’s biodiversity. However, in reality, such proclamation appears to be fairly permissive.

Observing the island isolation and mild nature, Former Minister Amirul Islam Kalam named the island ‘Nijhum Dwip’ in 1975.

Sights of Nijhum Dwip

A short walk along Chowdhury Canal near Kaviraj Char between afternoon and evening is likely to see deer. Besides, if you reserve a boat, the boatman will show you the deer. In the evening, a herd of thousands of buffaloes will catch your eye with the sunset at Kaviraj’s pasture.

On the island of Kamala, a lot of hilsa is found in the canal of Kamala. You can buy fresh hilsa from the locals. In Nijhum Island, local boys work as guides and take them with them in the morning to see deer in the mangrove forest. It takes 10 minutes to walk from Namar Bazaar to Namar Bazaar Sea Beach. Apart from watching the sunrise and sunset from Nama Bazar Sea Beach, you can also have a barbecue.

The new sea beach on the south side of Damar Char is known as Virgin Island. You can see many unknown birds on this island. You can see deer occasionally from the terrace of Nijhum Resort in Chowakhali. Besides, if you have time, you can spend a day at Bhola Dhalchar, Char Kukri – Mukri by boat.

Best time to go Nijhum Dwip

From October to mid-April is the best time to visit Nijhum Island. At other times of the year the Meghna River and the sea are quite rough so one should be careful when visiting Nijhum Dwip during that time.

By using road/train/air from any places to Chattogram, then By local transport to Destination. From Noakhali district headquarters Maijdi, first, you have to go to the Sonapur bus stand. From there you have to get off at Chairman Ghat by any local bus service / CNG autorickshaw going to Chairman Ghat. After that, you can get off at Nalchira Ghat by Citrock / Launch Service, add CNG Autorickshaw to Jahajmara Ghat, cross the Jahajmara Channel by boat and reach Nijhum Island.

Nijhum Dwip (Silent Island') is a small island under Hatiya Upazila of Noakhali District. It is a cluster of islands that emerged in the early 1950s. The main attraction is the herd of about 5000 cheetal or spotted deer, monkeys, a huge number of mated birds come in the winter season, enhancing the beauty of this island. Now this island has been declared as the unique eco-tourist spot.

Migratory Birds in Nijhum Dwip: During winter, thousands of migratory birds flock into the island. The fishermen use the airy and sunny land as an ideal place for drying their catches from the sea. Sometimes many of them also construct straw huts on the island as seasonal residences.

In 1974 the Forest Department took an afforestation program for a duration of twenty years on the north side of the island. Covering an area of nine thousand acres, it has now developed into a deep forest with a variety of plant species. Among the trees, Keora is much seen. Besides this Gewa, Kankra, Bain, Babul, Karamja, Pashur, and many other species are seen.

On 8 April 2001, the government declared the 40,390 acres (16,345 ha) of the forest of Jahajmara range including 9,550 acres (3,865 ha) of forest land on Nijhum Dwip as a National Park for the protection and development of the biodiversity of the forest. But in practice, there a very lazy appearance of that declaration.

It was named 'Nijhum Dwip' by former Minister Amirul Islam Kalam in 1975 observing its isolation and mild nature.

By using road/train/air from any places to Chattogram, then By local transport to Destination. From Noakhali district headquarters Maijdi, first, you have to go to the Sonapur bus stand.
